ANGELO’S ITALIAN MARKET

11649 Maple Street, Suite 95 Fishers, IN

Writer / Renee Larr Photographer / Brian Brosmer

Food and family are two defining characteristics of Italian culture. Chris Marra comes from a long line of Italian relatives, meaning most Sundays growing up were spent cooking Italian dishes with his father, Mike. Marra’s great-grandparents moved to Cleveland from Italy in the early 1900s. Mike learned to make pasta from his grandmother in her garage. The father-and-son team opened Angelo’s Italian Market in April as a way to honor their Italian heritage and pay tribute to Marra’s grandfather, Angelo.

son team purchases flour directly from a stone mill in Illinois. Marra says utilizing a stone-milled product means its natural nutrients stay intact and taste better.

“Growing up, my dad spent a lot of time learning to make pasta and various sauces from his grandmother,” Chris Marra says. “Nothing was ever written down, but my dad hung on to those recipes.”

Their homemade sauces include basil pesto, garlic formaggio, vodka cream, ragu alla Angelo’s, and a traditional Sunday red sauce. They also offer stuffed, fresh pastas like ravioli, tortellini and stuffed rigatoni. Customers can also preorder takeand-bake pastas such as lasagna and pasta bake.

He wasn’t sold on the idea of an Italian market until he realized just how much pasta his kids were eating. He discussed focusing on fresh, homemade pasta and sauces with his wife, and Angelo’s Italian Market was born. He says waiting until the concept was perfect was the key to the success of the family-operated business.

The market also sells hand-rolled meatballs, fresh-baked bread, salads, sandwiches, Italian-imported gluten-free pastas, Italian sweets, imported olive oils, cured meats, and Circles Ice Cream products. Marra says they hope to offer hot lunches three days per week. They now offer catering as well.

Father and son spent countless hours visiting other businesses outside the area to source the best ingredients and tools for their products. They use a bronze die extruder for pastas like bucatini, cavatelli, ziti, and spaghetti alla chitarra. While the bronze die extruder is expensive, it creates a textured surface for the pasta, allowing the sauce to cling to the noodles.

Angelo’s also offers classes on making Italian pasta. Marra says he’s pleasantly surprised by how quickly the classes sell out. He says every time he adds a date, it sells out immediately.

The Angelo’s team makes pasta with only two ingredients: highquality, stone-milled, organic semolina flour, and water. The father-

“The pasta-making class teaches our guests how to make handmade pasta at home without any fancy tools,” he says. “The classes are limited to six people, and we have some charcuterie while the pasta rests. Then we hand-cut it, and they take home what they made that night.”

purchase of the sewer utility serving city residents.

When Dr. Yvonne Stokes was hired as Hamilton Southeastern (HSE) Schools superintendent in April of 2021, the school district made history by hiring its first African American superintendent. On September 13, 2023, the school board made history again, this time by accepting the resignation and separation agreement of Stokes. The board, and Attorney Chris Greisl, portrayed the separation as a mutual agreement. Public speakers at the meeting described the situation as forced resignation.

Fishers City Councilor David Giffel proposed the city explore awarding one private contract for city trash removal, in order to save trash collection fees for residents. Fadness says he will schedule a work session to explain the many steps that must be taken to begin that process.

The opening of the HSE school board meeting on September 19 featured the reading of a statement from Board President Dawn Lang, expressing “gratitude” to the local community, but “recognizing we don’t always agree.” She referred to moving “through the next steps with this plan,” but didn’t specify “this plan” in her statement. Lang expressed her commitment “to honesty, transparency and collaboration.” Just days after accepting the resignation of Stokes, the school board hired the firm Administrative Assistance to provide mentoring services for interim HSE Superintendent Dr. Matt Kegley, and will begin the search for a new permanent superintendent in mid-November, after the vote on the referendum. The debt rating agency Standard & Poor downgraded Fishers’ city debt, backed by property taxes, from AAA to AA+. Mayor Scott Fadness says he anticipated this development, due largely to the city’s

During some years, Fadness uses his State of the City address to make big announcements, and other years he likes to just highlight what is happening in city government. In 2023 the mayor invited three of his department heads, including Health Department Director Monica Heltz, Fire and Emergency Services Department Chief Steve Orusa and Police Department Chief Ed Gebhart, up to his State of the City stage. They each summarized major issues being handled by their respective departments. HSE Schools leaders unveiled their 2024 spending plan, totaling $296 million. Enrollment overall is a bit down in the current school year, but HSE Schools Chief Financial Officer Katy Dowling says this should not present any major budget issues this school year, presuming the referendum on the election ballot passes. Verizon was initially eager to construct 5G towers around the Fishers and many are in operation. However, in recent months and years, Verizon has stopped construction of these towers. Once right-of-way is granted for the towers, Verizon has two years to at least begin construction. At the September 12 Board of Works and Safety meeting, Tami Houston, assistant engineer for the 6 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2023 / TownePost.com

city, told the board seven such tower rightsof-way have had the two-year period expire, leading to the board vote revoking those rights-of-way. Houston told Fadness there are about 80 such right-of-way actions set to expire in the future if Verizon chooses not to construct towers at those locations, with 30 to 35 such grants expiring soon. Verizon has not commented on why it has chosen to stop constructing 5G towers in Fishers. After serving under Planning and Zoning Director Megan Vukusich as her assistant, Ross Hilleary has moved up to the director’s chair with Vukusich’s departure. According to a city news release, Hilleary’s responsibilities will include leading the day-to-day operations and implementation as well as special initiatives for longrange planning of the city’s parks, trails and greenways efforts, and the Unified Development Ordinance update. Dowling asked the school board budget and finance committee on September 19 what they are seeking from a contract with Bondry Consulting that she is not already providing. Ben Orr says he wants to learn more about school finance. Orr later gave Dowling a vote of confidence. “I want to say very publicly that I have full faith…in our CFO,” Orr said. “Katy has been outstanding.” My thanks to the Fishers High School parent-teacher organization, for inviting me to judge the Chili Cook-Off on September 29, sampling some tasty chili from some wonderful teacher-chefs. I enjoyed working with fellow judges, Master Chef Kelsey Murphy and WTHR Meteorologist Angela Buchman.

Giving Tuesday EXPLORE THE MANY WAYS YOU CAN GIVE BACK LOCALLY Writer / Alison Gatz Photography Provided

WHAT IS GIVING TUESDAY ALL ABOUT? Giving Tuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Giving Tuesday takes place every year on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving in the United States. Giving Tuesday this year will be on Tuesday, November 28. The primary goal of Giving Tuesday is to encourage people to engage in acts of generosity, and to support charitable organizations and causes. It serves as a reminder of the importance of giving back to the community, both locally and globally. Participants are encouraged to donate their time, money, skills or other resources to help those in need, or to support causes they are passionate about.

While it originated in the United States, Giving Tuesday has grown into a global movement, with participation from individuals, nonprofits, businesses and communities around the world.

2. Diverse Forms of Giving

Giving on this day can take many forms including monetary donations to nonprofits, volunteering time, fundraising for charitable causes, and acts of kindness.

3. Social Media Engagement

Giving Tuesday has leveraged the power of social media to spread awareness and encourage participation. The hashtag #GivingTuesday is commonly used on platforms like X, Facebook and Instagram to share stories of giving and inspire others to get involved.

4. Impact

Since its inception, Giving Tuesday has generated significant support for charitable organizations and has raised millions of dollars for various causes. It has also helped shine a spotlight on important social and environmental issues.

5. Partnerships

Many nonprofit organizations, businesses and corporations actively participate in Giving Tuesday by launching fundraising campaigns, matching donations or contributing a portion of their sales to charitable causes.

6. Community Building

Giving Tuesday fosters a sense of community engagement and philanthropy, bringing people together to make a positive difference in the world.

7. Yearly Tradition

Giving Tuesday has become an annual tradition, and it continues to grow in popularity as more people and organizations join the movement. Overall, Giving Tuesday serves as a reminder that the holiday season is not just about consumerism, but also about giving, compassion, and making a positive impact on society. It encourages individuals and communities to come together and support the causes and organizations that matter most to them. Activities include spring and fall pickleball, a blind wine tasting attended by over 20 women, and a smaller bike ride to El Camino Real. Another shared experience was charcuterie board making, where partners produced boards, with themes such as Bloody Mary or brunch. “Fishers can seem big, but there is always something to do in a smaller vicinity to create a sense of community,” Poske says. “It develops a sense of belonging. HSE GRAD’S DOCUMENTARY CHRONICLES UNIQUE JOURNEY Writer / Julie Yates Photography Provided

Gorgeous vistas and breathtaking views are abundant in the documentary “Skoolie,” a full-length feature film by Kyle Thacker and his company Red Dot Video. Viewers experience the highest highs and lowest lows, while vicariously experiencing the trip of a lifetime. Thacker, a 2010 graduate of Hamilton Southeastern High School, and his wife, Naomi, left their conventional lives for nearly eleven months to travel across the United States in a converted school bus.

was a tiny house outside of Asheville. It was a blue bus parked in the woods. It had hanging lights and furniture. I loved the romance of it. A converted bus is way cooler than a regular RV. There are tens of thousands of people who have skoolies, converted school buses. They range from people just out of college to retirees, and converge together at meetups. I started to go down a rabbit hole thinking about it.”

“Skoolie,” which premiered in September at Noblesville’s Emagine theater, has been well-received. It recounts the couple’s rationale behind the decision to uproot their life, converting a 2001 Thomas international school bus, and the reason for the abrupt ending to their journey. It all began when the Thackers took their first vacation together.

“I found a bus on Facebook that a couple from Vicksburg, Mississippi, was selling,” Thacker continues. “It had a raised roof, and that was important because I’m 6 feet and 5 inches. Sawing a bus in half, raising a roof and welding it back together was something I didn’t want to have to do. We tore every seat out except for the driver’s and one for Naomi to sit on while I drove. With the small deck on the back, it is 39 feet long.”

“When we were dating, we took a trip to North Carolina,” Thacker says. “One of the places we stayed

milestone celebrations, so the shift to videography was natural. Although he has done shorter documentaries, “Skoolie” is his first full-length film.

“As a child I was obsessed with movies,” he says. "I loved the storytelling. Documentaries are like long-format stories but there is no rubric, syllabus or rule book. The ending hasn’t happened yet and you don’t know exactly where it’s going to go. I love shooting the scenery and adding the musical transitions. I put it up on YouTube and not a subscription streaming service because I want people to be able to watch it for free. It wasn’t about making money out of the gate, although it might lead to more work. We have entered it into several film festivals. We made a promise to see it through and I’m so glad we didn’t give up. The second thing was how hard it was to drive the bus. It’s like driving a house through winding roads and down mountains. I worried constantly that it would break down or fall apart.”

Fishers-based Holt Dental has welcomed Dr. Anya Chowdhary to the practice.

“We want to make a personalized plan for each patient,” Dr. Anya says. “We want people to feel in control of their treatment and they’re not pushed into anything. Many patients have a fear of dentists and we want that fear gone.”

Dr. Anya knew she wanted to go into dentistry at a young age, when missionaries from the United States visited her home community in Kyrgyzstan. In addition to joining Holt Dental, Dr. Anya is now the dentist “At 14 or 15 years old I served as an interpreter for the missionaries, performing the mission work in and I would help as we traveled to villages,” she says. “I watched as countries across the globe. RECOVERY CAFÉ HAMILTON COUNTY they are grateful.

Writer / Renee Larr Photography Provided

Sometimes, the word recovery brings to mind addiction issues, but one local nonprofit is trying to change the stigma. “Everyone is recovering from something” is the motto of Recovery Café Hamilton County. The community center provides a safe place for people who are having a difficult time.

“Initially, members might take out the trash or wipe down the tables,” Foli says. “Then they take on more volunteer opportunities such as leading a recovery circle, a companion in the space for others, or taking ownership of different programs. They end up becoming community leaders, which is incredible to watch.”

Nancy Chance

“The cafe is here for anyone struggling with a divorce, mental illness, homelessness, domestic violence or substance abuse issues,” says Joylynn Foli, executive director. “It’s a place for people to connect with others who are also struggling. We’re welcoming and open to anyone.” Recovery Café started in Seattle in 2002, and since then there have been 60 cafes across the U.S., with 20 in Indiana alone. The cafe provides warm meals, coffee and connection during open hours. They also offer food pantry items to anyone in need. “Right now we’re finishing our kitchen

where we will make meals, but we’ve been relying on the community’s kindness to donate meals,” Foli says. “We recently received a grant for $10,000 from the City of Fishers, which is going toward our kitchen renovations. We were extremely excited and grateful for the grant.” New members must be drug free and alcohol free for 24 hours, so as not to trigger other members. They must also attend a weekly recovery circle led by peer recovery coaches, during which they discuss challenges they face, goals to work toward, and things for which

As a nonprofit, Recovery Café relies on the assistance of the local community to help support its mission. Foli says the team always seeks monetary and in-kind donations, volunteers and community partnerships. “We are a resource hub for many members,” Foli says. “We provide a warm handoff to any additional resources they may need as they recover.” With the holiday season approaching, people may struggle with emotional triggers due to unresolved family issues, loneliness and distress. Foli says the opposite of addiction is connection. “We encourage people to find a place to unload their burdens,” Foli says.

“Other tips to make it through the holiday season include sticking to a routine, making time for self-care and utilizing the many resources offered in Hamilton County.” Foli says it’s important to remember that it’s powerful and courageous to seek help. She says there is often a stigma around mental health or addiction issues, which can prevent people from receiving the help they need. “We want to normalize seeking help, and don’t want anyone hiding in the shadows suffering,” Foli says. Recovery Café Hamilton County is located at 7050 East 116th Street, Suite 100 in Fishers. For more information, call 317-620-1875 or visit recoverycafehc.com.
