Steve Gilbert

PA R K I N S O N ’ S D I S E A S E C A N ’ T S LOW D OW N LO C A L MARATHON RUNNER & ROCK STEADY BOXER STEVE GILBERT Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Ron Wise

For Steve Gilbert, limits are illusions — nothing more than hindrances we place on ourselves. One glimpse into Gilbert’s physical accomplishments over the past decade, and it becomes apparent that such an optimistic personal philosophy has been shaped by plenty of adversity and a tireless work ethic. A few years after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2004, Gilbert spotted a story in the newspaper about Rock Steady Boxing, a nonprofit that offers non-contact, boxing-inspired workouts for those with Parkinson’s. Never much of an athlete (he describes himself through junior high and

high school years as “the kid in math club, not the kid on the ball field”), he was a bit intimidated but intrigued enough to try it out. After one class, he was hooked. “It was hard work, and they kept telling me I could do things that I didn’t think I could do,” says Gilbert, a 73-year-old Indy native and Fishers resident. “It’s meant for people with movement difficulties, and I thought it sounded like fun. I reached a new level of fitness that I never had before. It transformed my life emotionally and spiritually.” In 2010, Gilbert’s younger brother Bruce, a Kansas resident and a runner since junior high who has completed eight Boston Marathons starting in 1969, came to Indy for the Geist Half Marathon. Having attained newfound confidence atFishers.com / DECEMBER 2019 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 7

and unexpected success in his physical development thanks to regular workouts at Rock Steady, Gilbert figured it was time for an additional challenge and decided to join Bruce for the race. “It was so empowering to finish that half marathon, thinking back on all the progress I’d made and dealing with Parkinson’s,” Gilbert says. “I guess I got the running bug, and I did the Geist Half and the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon the next year. I’ve been running pretty much nonstop ever since.” And the fitness opportunities keep coming. This spring, Gilbert was contacted by Blake Boldon, director of the Drake Relays, one of the top track and field events in the country held in Des Moines, Iowa. Boldon

knew Gilbert from his days directing the Monumental Marathon and formally invited Gilbert to compete in the 40-yearsand-older Masters 800-meter race on April 26 at the 110th Drake Relays. “(Boldon) wanted me to come as an example of maintaining fitness and fighting back against the challenges that I’ve faced,” Gilbert explains. “It was an honor to be able to do it.” Since the age of 65, Gilbert has become a veritable race veteran, having finished two full marathons, 12 half marathons and more than 40 other races of various distances — never letting his physical limitations get in the way. His current schedule includes Rock Steady workouts twice per week and runs three times per week, often with local fitness groups Fishers Running Club and Indy Runners. He gives credit for his physical progress to his trainers and fitness partners, family, friends and colleagues at Cyntheanne Christian Church in Fishers, as well as the city of Fishers itself. “With all the trails and sidewalks, Fishers is an inviting place for a runner,” Gilbert says. “Construction on a lot more of the sidewalks is underway, and I’m excited to see that. To have a lot of the trails and sidewalks connected is good for a runner because you want to stay in your rhythm without having to stop at gaps and streets.” Gilbert recently competed in the Indianapolis Monumental Mile race in June and plans to compete in the Monumental Marathon in the fall. As he continues dealing with physical challenges of Parkinson’s, he stands as proof that anyone of any age can work to improve their health and outlook on life. “Your biggest obstacle is you,” he says. “You can do more than you think you can and more than other people think you can. I feel healthier than I ever thought I could be, given my age and challenges. I think you have to celebrate your small victories and don’t get discouraged. It’s never too late to start, and it’s always too soon to quit.”

Honor mind. Honor body. Honor self. These are the goals of Honor Yoga, a new yoga studio set to open at the beginning of January, right in the heart of Fishers. Located on the firstw floor of the new Ellipse Building, just north of the Nickel Plate Amphitheater, Honor Yoga offers a variety of yoga and meditation classes along with workshops and teacher training. Owners, and husband/wife team, Stephanie and Travis Ewing are excited to bring the first traditional yoga franchise to Fishers. “My husband and I have always wanted to own our own business and we are both very

much advocates for wellness, health, and wellbeing. We found Honor Yoga, which is a franchise out of New Jersey,” Stephanie says. “We loved the mission and vision of what Honor Yoga stands for: to bring mindfulness, more peacefulness, and more movement into people’s lives. We wanted to bring that to the community here in Fishers.” Ewing, who is in commercial banking for Chase Bank, has long been a proponent for physical fitness, overall health and wellbeing. She served on the board of the Geist Half Marathon when it first organized to promote health and wellness for children in and around the Geist Reservoir community. Ewing is continuing her mission of bringing an awareness of the benefits of exercise 10 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2019 / atFishers.com

that not only strengthens bodies but also strengthens minds through the classes offered at Honor Yoga. “We are excited to be bringing all formats and levels of yoga to meet people where they are in their practice. Everything from gentle and yin, roots, strong & calm, flow classes, aerial and yoga barre,” she says. “We have heated and hot yoga using infrared technology.” Honor Yoga is running an introductory special that is valid until the end of March 2020. For $30, new members can take an unlimited amount of yoga classes for 30 days. Taking advantage of this trial promotion qualifies the participant to

Instead of the usual $128 monthly membership fee, Special Founding Members will enjoy a reduced cost of only $99 per month. This offer can be purchased on the studio’s website. “We are membership-based (members can take an unlimited number of classes each month),” Stephanie says. “People can do month to month membership and there are no contracts. People can purchase a pack of 10 or 20 classes as well. But if you plan on coming twice a week, the unlimited is very much the way to go to save money. “The introductory special is the perfect gift of wellness and yoga for Christmas,” she adds. “Lots of people are signing up, so grab that $30 for 30. We are super excited to bring Honor Yoga to Fishers.” Visit Honor Yoga at 11 Municipal Drive or online at HonorYoga.com/ Fishers to sign up for the new member offer of unlimited classes for 30 days for $30.

Promise Road Business Park closes a real estate gap by offering the chance to own a space tailored to specific needs. The concept is geared to the idea that owning real estate and building equity makes better sense than leasing office space and paying monthly rent.

“For a small business owner, it’s a no-worry investment,” Martin says. “An entrepreneur can make a small investment and pay themselves rent. The location gives exposure since Interstate 69 runs past the property and business names can be seen on the upper part of the building.”

Developer and co-owner Doug Martin realized the potential for the property, which already had two existing buildings

The first two existing buildings have proven to be great investments for their owners. Both buildings are completely full. Owners

include a technology marketing agency, a financial planner, an insurance agency, a landscaper, a pond maintenance company, an exercise facility, a chiropractor, a dentist and even a small church. The second phase, erecting buildings three and four, is currently in the pre-sale period. The resulting 38 units are expected to be ready for occupancy in the second quarter of 2020. “During the pre-sale period, owners can customize their space the way they want it,” Martin adds. “The size of the units could be increased by putting two or more together. The price is affordable for a small business starting at $150,000.” Paul Dick of Resource Commercial Real Estate and agent for the property explains the concept’s flexibility, “We are basically delivering a ‘box’ with four walls, a concrete floor, an electric panel, water and sewer line

to the customer. The space has incredible utility since the owner can design it the way they want. The size of the units ranges from 1,260 to 1,625 square feet and they are high enough that a mezzanine or second floor could be built. The industrial zoning classification allows buyers a wide range of uses and build-out such as offices, warehouse or even boat and RV storage.” “These units, at the very least, will hold their value,” Martin adds. “When someone owns one of these units, they are creating an investment with increasing value. Owning their own space gives small businesses an asset versus nothing.” For more information on Promise Road Business Park contact Paul Dick, Resource Commercial Real Estate at 317663-6540 or email paul.dick@rcre.com.

Peterson’s Celebrates 20 Years As One of Indy’s Premier, Family-Owned Steakhouses Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Michael Durr

For any food-based business to survive for multiple decades in a restaurant-heavy area like Indianapolis is quite an accomplishment. So how has Peterson’s on East 96th Street been able to not only survive for 20 years but thrive as one of the city’s top steakhouses while remaining independent and familyowned all the while?

For General Manager Bradley Phelps, it begins with owner Joe Peterson’s commitment to the business and the Indianapolis community. “Mr. Peterson has always valued the entire staff here and listens to our customers’ feedback,” Phelps says. “He really cares about the kind of experience they have. The other thing is that we deliver a high-quality product with both service and the items DECEMBER 2019

that people consume — spirits, wine and culinary items.” Back in 1999 Joe Peterson, a 1957 Cathedral High School grad, was busy in the corporate world running a family business, Crown Technology and grew interested in opening a steakhouse establishment to provide the kind of quality cuisine he felt was lacking in many steakhouses around the country. Peterson saw potential in Fishers, which was

starting to expand both residentially and commercially at the time, and took over the space formerly occupied by Frisch’s Big Boy on East 96th Street. Since then, Peterson’s has established itself as a high-end, dinner-only destination, and this year the staff officially celebrated the business’s 20th birthday by shutting down the building and inviting its top 500 regular guests to wine and dine the evening away. “It was a way to say thank you to those top regular guests who’ve been with us over the years, and we just threw a big cocktail party shindig for them with live music,” says Phelps, a native of Peoria, Illinois, who joined the Peterson’s team in June of 2016. Phelps says Peterson’s has become known particularly for its barrel-cut filet mignon, which Executive Chef Dave Foegley sources from the restaurant’s Chicagobased butcher. The menu also features New York strip and prime ribeye steak cuts, smoked pork chop, duck breast and smoke-roasted chicken, as well as a sizable selection of seafood items like lobster, crab legs, salmon, oysters and crab-stuffed shrimp. The kitchen staff, helmed by Foegley, sources from several local vendors including Fischer Farms, Traders Point Creamery, Goose the Market, Legacy Maker and others, which Phelps says adds to the overall flavor and quality of the menu. “Our executive chef has a 10-year relationship with our butcher up in Chicago, and he has certain specifications that he’s constantly talking to the butcher about for our barrel-cut filet,” Phelps explains. “Dave has been in the industry as an executive chef for one upscale restaurant or another from Peter’s to St. Elmo to us, for the last 25 years.” No steakhouse would truly be complete without a reasonably well-rounded wine list, and Peterson’s consistently stocks more than 400 selections from around the world. The ever-evolving list, which includes champagnes and sparkling selections as well as reds and whites, has

garnered multiple “Best of Award of Excellence” awards from Wine Spectator magazine. “Our staff really has a commitment to doing things right not just trying to sell everything under the sun to the guest but making sure the guest wants to come back and has that positive experience,” Phelps adds. “With being in the people business, there are times when the connection’s not always made, and people might get a different experience than they were expecting, but we give it our darnedest for sure.” Peterson’s holds special functions regularly including exclusive wine dinners, a “Bourbon, Brew and ‘Q” event around Father’s Day for barbecue enthusiasts, and a March Madness NCAA basketball kickoff event. Phelps says providing an elegant backdrop for all manner of special celebrations has helped to cement Peterson’s status as one of the city’s culinary fixtures for two decades. “Over the years, we’ve become a destination place for birthdays, anniversaries, engagements and the special occasions in life,” he says. “And business people generally appreciate the ambiance when they come in to dine as well. We want people to have the feeling when they leave that they’ve had an uncommon and special experience.” Visit Peterson’s at 7690 East 96th Street in Fishers. A MERRY PRAIRIE HOLIDAY CONNER PRAIRIE’S INAUGURAL EVENT IS THE NEW HOME OF THE REYNOLDS FARM CHRISTMAS LIGHTS Writer / Josh Brown Photography provided by Conner Prairie & Amy Payne

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and Conner Prairie hopes to make this Christmas season even more wonderful for families across Hamilton County. The inaugural “A Merry Prairie Holiday” event officially started on November 29 and will continue through December 31. The new holiday festival has something for everyone, but perhaps the biggest news of the event is the inclusion of the popular Reynolds Farm Christmas Lights display. Back in July, it was announced that the iconic light display was gifted to Conner Prairie for its new winter experience.

“Our Christmas light display was born out my father’s love for Christmas and our community,” said Gary Reynolds, owner and chairman of Reynolds Farm Equipment, in a July statement. “Transitioning our Christmas lights display to Conner Prairie ensures this tradition of celebrating Christmas with lights continues as part of Conner Prairie’s new A Merry Prairie Holiday festival.”

of holiday festivities,” Burns says. “This year, it will be even more so as we bring new experiences to the holiday season and carry on a time-honored family tradition by displaying the Reynolds Christmas lights, donated by Gary Reynolds and his family, across the grounds as part of the new A Merry Prairie Holiday Festival.”

Norman Burns, President and CEO at Conner Prairie, is excited to include the light display and bring a new tradition to Hamilton County.

In the past, it wasn’t uncommon to see cars lined up all the way back onto State Road 37 for the drive-thru light display. This year, the display is set up across Conner Prairie’s grounds for visitors to walk through and experience.

“Winter is always a special time at Conner Prairie thanks to our 40-year plus tradition

“We are incredibly excited to have the Reynolds Christmas lights this year,”

DECEMBER 2019

says Chris Petrelli, Senior Director of Museum Experiences at Conner Prairie. “They were extremely generous in donating that incredible display. It is a major tradition for everyone in Hamilton County. We are humbled and honored to take the baton and keep this beloved tradition going. We spent a lot of time running extension cords and placing the lights. People will be able to get a new perspective on the display. It’s going to be great to see the lights spread out across our grounds.” A Merry Prairie Holiday will include much more than just the Reynolds Christmas Lights. The festival is jampacked with family-friendly events like the North Pole Village — complete with a toy workshop to make holiday gifts, a Polar Bear Plunge dry snow tubing hill, Reindeer Games Midway, Claus’ Cabin, where kids can meet Mrs. Claus and drop their letters off to Santa, and the Kringle’s Carousel ride. Local entertainers and musicians will perform throughout each night on the “Blitzen’s Bandstand,” too. History buffs will appreciate a walk through Prairietown, which includes the 1860s Hoosier Homefront and Soldiers Camp to learn how the season was celebrated during the time of the Civil War. The classic Conner Prairie by Candlelight favorites, like Dr. Campbell’s Soiree, is included as well as a live reading from Charles Dickens “A Christmas Carol” with the sounds of Christmas carolers. “The great thing about this festival is we have planned it to be a two-hour experience,” Petrelli says. “Not only do you get to experience the Christmas lights but all of these events, too. It really has a variety of experiences that the entire family will enjoy.” The festival will also include a Winterland Wagon Ride. The ride will take guests across the historic grounds and through thousands of the Christmas lights.

“I have an 11-year-old and an 8-yearold, and I’m excited about the wagon ride and the Prairietown experience,” Petrelli adds. “I think the tubing hill and the carousel will also be big crowd-pleasers.” Unlike the popular Headless Horseman Halloween event, A Merry Prairie Holiday will not have any time ticketed rides or events. Instead, all of the events, like the Winterland Wagon Ride, the Kringle’s Carousel and the Polar Bear Plunge, will all be first come, first served. Petrelli stresses that there shouldn’t be much of a need for families and visitors to show up extremely early before gates open for the event. A Merry Prairie Holiday is an outdoor festival. Even though the colder weather is upon us, Petrelli urges families not to be deterred from visiting, even on some of the more chilly evenings. “Obviously, people should bundle up, but I want to reassure people that we have opportunities for you to stay warm, too,” he says. “Our welcome center, store and more will be open for people to come inside if they get too cold. We will also have several fire pits going and plenty of hot-chocolate stands throughout the grounds. So, don’t fear the cold too much.” A Merry Prairie Holiday will be held Friday through Sunday evenings from 6 to 10 p.m. Advance tickets are $16 per guest and $8 per member. Tickets purchased at the gate will be $20 per guest or $10 per member. For more information and to purchase advance tickets, visit them online at connerprairie.org. The festival will wrap up on Dec. 31 with a special early fireworks display at 9 p.m. to celebrate the New Year. Conner Prairie is located at 13400 Allisonville Road in Fishers. You can give them a call at 317-776-6000. DECEMBER 2019

HAMILTON COUNTY KIDS COATS PREPARES FAMILIES FOR WINTER

atFishers.com / DECEMBER 2019 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 25

Writer / Braden Ochs Photography Provided

Every year, hundreds of families from all over the Hamilton County area come and receive free coats to stay warm for the winter. Hamilton County Kids Coats is responsible for changing kids and their families’ lives and preparing them for the cold Indiana winters. Kids Coats’ mission is to provide coats and winter clothes to families in the area by partnering with the local community in Hamilton County. Aside from giving away coats, Kids Coats connects these families to community resources, prayer opportunities and churches around the area. “It’s sharing the warmth of Christ’s love,” says Stephanie Fairfield, president of the board of directors. Hamilton County Kids Coats started in 2004 at the direction of three women from a local church called Carmel United Methodist Church (CUMC). They saw the need to collect and distribute coats for the children in Hamilton County. There were organizations similar for residents of Marion County, but Hamilton County residents did not have that opportunity. The ladies at CUMC wanted to change that and reach out to their own community. The first year it began, the event was sponsored and run by CUMC and the Good Samaritan Network. A few years after the organization started, it grew to the point where hundreds of people would stand outside in the cold in November waiting to receive coats. They soon came up with several different host churches in each city for Hamilton County residents to pick up their coats every year.

online. When they signed up, they had to write down how many children they have, what their genders are and what size coats they wear. Residents and their families were still able to walk in if they were not able to make an appointment. This year, more than 800 families made appointments to receive winter coats. “I love watching a little kid come walking down the hall proud as can be of the coat he or she just received and seeing the relief on a parent’s face,” Fairfield says. “That is one less thing they have to think about.”

In 2018, Kids Coats gave out more than 3,000 new and gently used winter coats and winter wear to children and families. They also gave out more than 2,000 lightweight jackets to school kids in need. The six giveaway sites do their best to provide a safe place for families to come and pick up their coats. Many residents signed up for 15-minute appointments DECEMBER 2019

The partner churches that housed the giveaways this past October and November included CUMC in Carmel, Green Valley Church of Christ in Noblesville, Saint Louis De Montfort Catholic Church in Fishers, Arcadia Brethren Church in Arcadia, Sheridan First United Methodist Church in Sheridan and Epiphany Lutheran Church in Westfield.

Even though the giveaways ended in November, there is still an opportunity to receive coats. Merciful HELP Center in Carmel keeps a selection of coats on hand until the end of February for those who may have missed the giveaway opportunities. Anything that is left is saved for the warehouse for next year. According to Fairfield, there were additional resources offered at the giveaway locations. Called Opportunity Village, this area of additional resources was made up of organizations and agencies around the area where people can sign up and receive help. Fairfield loves the one-stop-shop idea where residents can receive more than just a coat if they need it. Fairfield’s role as the President of the Board of Directors is entirely on a volunteer basis. As of now, they have an all-volunteer staff who work hard to help their mission succeed. Fairfield leads the board of directors to work through the business side of Kids Coats, making sure the organization is a welloiled machine so those kids can receive the coats and other resources they need. “We are always looking for volunteers at all levels of the organization,” Fairfield says. “Everyone is valuable, needed and so much appreciated.” Those interested can sign up for a place to volunteer on the website. Just about anyone can find a place they can plug in to help year to year. Kids Coats can always use help sorting and distributing at the warehouse, too. If people do not want to volunteer, they can donate coats and other winter wear at two locations yearround: CUMC and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church/ Merciful HELP Center. If you are interested in receiving coats as a Hamilton County resident, interested in becoming a volunteer or simply curious, visit kidscoats.org for more information.

and December. This farmers’ market focuses more on gifts and products related to the Holidays. This will be its third year in Fishers.

During the months of November and December, the Fishers Holiday Farmers’ Market comes to town with local businesses, “When the weather gets worse, it’s a family fun and holiday spirit. fun thing to do as a family,” says Marissa Deckert, assistant director of fishers parks Every year, there are two farmers’ markets and recreation. in Fishers. The first one is the Fishers Summer Farmers’ Market, which occurs The Holiday Market is hosted in the every Saturday from May through October. community building at Roy G. for about a year now, and she loves the farmers’ markets in Fishers. Much of her role is to oversee the activities in Fishers, including the farmers’ markets, concerts, Independence Day celebrations, Halloween celebrations and even a mud day event where children and families can have fun in the mud. She especially loves the farmers’ market because it brings local businesses and residents together as a community. “As a Fishers resident, I love the sense of community it brings,” Deckert says. “Every Saturday, my family and I are at the farmers’ market and love running into friends and community members.”

Deckert wanted to focus especially on the holiday theme for the farmers’ market this year. She wanted to bring in vendors that could offer either a guestbought gift basket or a guest-made gift basket. Some of the products featured this year include handmade Indian grown chai teas, egg rolls for breakfast, a lot of sweets and drinks and even homemade dog treats. As another special treat, Santa is visiting the farmers’ market closer to the Christmas season. The Holiday Market is a scaled-down version of the Summer Market, where the Holiday Market only receives several hundred guests instead of the Summer Market’s several thousand. This is mainly due to limited space in the winter location. However, according to Deckert, they try to maximize as much space as they can for the holidays. It is set up in the Holland Park community building, and it’s a popular place for residents and guests to enjoy the winter season. “Come and check out all these vendors,” Deckert adds. “You can’t get them in your normal supermarkets.” The farmers’ market is not only a place for holiday shopping but a place where families and friends can enjoy fellowship. For those guests who want to come for more than shopping, the market includes a place for families and friends to hang out. They even provide a scavenger hunt for children to participate in. There are also reusable shopping bags available for guests who have never been before or do not have a bag already. Deckert recommends that people stop by and ask about getting a reusable bag. For Deckert, it’s always a tradition worth celebrating. Anyone and everyone is invited to bring their friends and family to shop for local treats and gifts, participate in scavenger hunts, pull up a chair and chat with friends and enjoy the holidays with the Fishers community. IN THE SPIRIT OF GIVING GOOD SAMARITAN NETWORK OF HAMILTON COUNTY ASSISTS FAMILIES THROUGH ANNUAL HOLIDAY DISTRIBUTIONS Writer / Jon Shoulders Photography Provided by GSN

Each holiday season, families throughout Hamilton County in need of some assistance with procuring food, clothing or toys have the opportunity to turn to Good Samaritan Network (GSN) of Hamilton County, which organizes distribution programs around Thanksgiving and Christmas time. GSN Founder and Executive Director Nancy Chance says the holiday programs are part of a year-round effort to lift up county residents who’ve fallen on hard times for a variety of reasons. “Through our agencies and pantries we serve about 47,000 clients in Hamilton County throughout the year, which is 18% of our population here,” says Chance, who grew up

in Noblesville. “And that’s not just the holiday services we do. That includes temporary services of some kind within our network. In our network, we have car repair, an energy assistance program and cancer funds. Our goal is to catch people before they start spiraling down and things get worse.” Chance unofficially founded GSN back in 1980 after Fishers, Carmel and Noblesville police and firefighters expressed their collective interest in a coordinated effort to provide for families in need around holiday time. Fifteen years later, the organization was formally founded as a nonprofit and continues to assist thousands of Hamilton County residents year after year.

the county so we can all be more effective and reduce duplication,” Chance says. “All the agencies and pantries work together and have met once a month since 1980.” GSN kicked off its annual holiday assistance events this year with a Thanksgiving giveaway on November 23, which included distribution of food boxes and baskets to Hamilton County residents at the Hamilton County 4H Fairgrounds in Noblesville. The event was followed by meal deliveries on Thanksgiving Day for elderly and disabled individuals throughout the county.

On December 14 GSN continues its volunteer-based work with its Christmas distribution program at the Fairgrounds, “We’ve tried to be the umbrella organization which Chance says is the organization’s biggest event and includes toys, food and to coordinate the network of agencies, clothing. churches, food pantries and businesses in DECEMBER 2019

“We ran the Christmas distribution all the way through New Year’s Day last year,” she says, adding that the GSN was able to assist 26,978 people through its 2018 holiday distribution efforts. “Basically families sign up and they can be privately sponsored by churches, businesses, clubs and private individuals. Usually, about three-fourths of those who sign up are privately sponsored, and the rest we take care of at the 4H building.”

“A lot of people we help are working and sometimes working two or three jobs trying to hold a family together,” she says. “If you’re making $40,000 a year, after taking care of two kids and paying rent, utilities and insurance, that doesn’t leave you with much. We also help people who work here in the county but don’t live here because of the high cost of living. We want to help people to stay stabilized and keep their jobs and have their families stable.”

Many factors can prompt individuals and families to seek support — job losses and mental or physical illnesses to name a few — and Chance saw an increase in the need for aid after the financial downturn back in 2008 left many county residents unemployed. Those in need of GSN services or holiday assistance can submit on application online or through the mail. Volunteerism plays a crucial role in GSN operations and, according to Chance, the organization counts on more than 29,000 volunteer hours per year to make its various events and programs run smoothly. “On top of our staff we have 16 volunteers - retirees and business people - that come in at least once or twice a week to do skills work and specialized projects for us,” she adds. “That’s really what’s allowed us to keep up with all of our programming.” GSN works alongside 268 agencies, 43 pantries, 280 churches, 69 schools and five hospitals for its various programming and services, which include food and shelter, financial assistance, education and transportation.

A non-psychoactive compound meaning it does not get you high Hemp and marijuana are from the same family of plants but they are not the same plant. Hemp will not get you high.

Chance says one of her biggest challenges is continually raising awareness of the need for assistance throughout Hamilton County, which she says is an area many Central Indiana residents tend not to associate with underserved individuals and families. DECEMBER 2019

WALKING IN A WINTER WONDERLAND POPULAR FISHERS TRADITION KICKS OFF THE HOLIDAY SEASON Writer / Braden Ochs Photography Provided

On December 7, Fishers Parks and Recreation puts on a holiday event for friends and family everywhere around the Fishers area. Winter Wonderland is a Christmas celebration with tons of activities for adults and children alike. It’s one of their signature events every year.

six years ago. Fishers Parks and Recreation would program different performers and artists to entertain visitors. Since then, it has grown into a tree lighting event with several different activities for families and friends to enjoy with each other.

“There’s something for everyone to do, and we’re excited to kick off the holiday season with our tree and holiday lighting,” says Sarah Sandquist, Fishers Parks and Recreation Director.

According to Sandquist, some of the activities at Winter Wonderland besides the tree lighting include a kids’ craft tent, activities for kids including a hunt for candy canes and snowball fights, photo opportunities in a snow globe, ice-carving demonstrations, hot cocoa bar and even a visit from Santa, who will be reading stories at City Hall.

something you don’t see in a lot of places.” The candy cane hunt activity is where kids can search for candy canes that have been hidden throughout the Christmas trees. The newest events this year include Santa reading stories and carriage rides around the Municipal Complex. And this year, they will feature Pat Petrus Trio as the performing entertainment for people to listen to and enjoy. According to Sandquist, there will also be food and drink vendors for people to explore and eat a meal together. Every year, the Winter Wonderland event sees anywhere from 5,000 to 7,000 visitors. It’s always a great turnout for the community, according to Sandquist. It’s a

busy event, but it’s a tradition Fishers looks forward to every year. People love to come and support the holiday spirit and their community’s traditions. Sandquist especially loves the tree lighting event. It’s fun for her to watch the crowd’s reactions when they flip the switch to see the trees burst with holiday lights. “Seeing everyone come out is really fun from our end to put on this event for the community,” Sandquist adds. Winter Wonderland will be held Saturday, December 7 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. with the tree lighting at 6 p.m. The event is located at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater. The event and activities will commence rain or shine and the event is free for anyone. “There really are a lot of people in Fishers, and from the nearby areas that are Chicago transplants,” Mike says. “They have told us they were thrilled when we opened because it gave them a familiar place to go to.” The Fishers Aurelio’s opened in April 2016 and has been a big draw for pizza fans. “Aurelio’s is a highly successful franchise,

Mike stresses that there has been a lot of brand consistency with Aurelio’s. “People just know they are getting delicious pizza, and can count on the great taste,” he says. Mike says one of the key reasons Aurelio’s is so successful is because of the quality ingredients. 40 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2019 / atFishers.com

“We have kept everything the same as it is at the other locations,” Mike says. “We make our dough fresh, and we have our homemade meatballs. We also have the best cheese you can buy, and we have homemade signature sauces that are all 100% fresh. Our pizzas are really well known and loved.” Customer favorites include its thin crust sausage pizza and the meatball sandwiches. “The Italian Beef Sandwich is also at the top of the most requested list,” Mike says. “Our chicken wings are also popular. My personal favorites are The Hot Giardiniera Pizza or The Spinach Calabrese, with mozzarella cheese and fresh spinach. It’s marinated with a secret seasoning and a special marinara sauce. It’s fantastic.”

The breadsticks, salads, sandwiches and appetizers are all popular. Mike notes that the cheese sticks, with breaded Italian mozzarella cheese sticks, served with a side of marinara sauce for dipping; The Poppers, six breaded jalapeño peppers stuffed with cream cheese, and served with marina sauce; and zucchini sticks have also been a big hit. Popular pizzas include its taco pizza and veggie pizzas. Fan-favorite salads are its Chicken Field Green Salad, and Aurelio’s Cobb Salad. “Our original Aurelio’s Homemade Meatball Sandwiches are two homemade Italian sandwiches smothered in red sauce and served on a fresh toasted roll,” Mike says. “They get ordered a lot.” Other sandwiches include The Homemade Italian Sausage, Italian Combo, and fresh homemade Italian sausage and Italian beef served on toasted Italian bread.

to crisis situations and support the mental health of victims. We’re still working to get structures in place so each of the schools has a specific system that works for them.” Freedom Kolb, special projects officer for Hamilton Southeastern Schools, adds that the PREPaRE model accounts for all manner of crisis situations that can occur within a school setting, including violent acts and natural disasters. “One of the things that attracted us to the PREPaRE model is that it’s a crisis intervention and response model designed specifically for schools,” she says. “There are a lot of crisis intervention programs out there, but the NASP model specifically deals with the unique challenges in school situations. It trains you to triage and serve the needs of students, and also considers the teachers, parents, and other adults in the buildings as well.” Kolb says Hamilton Southeastern Schools currently has a team of 10 trained professionals who are able to intervene immediately during and after a crisis and each school district in the county has a

different number of trained PREPaRE leaders depending on district size. The model works in a tiered structure when a tragedy occurs, whereby PREPaREtrained professionals assess who has been most affected, and the ways leaders can help individuals and groups. “PREPaRE looks at what everybody who’s been affected needs - and maybe that’s a classroom-wide conversation around what happened, and not necessarily a therapy session - and then from there it looks at who needs individual or group debriefing,” Lawson explains. “If they’re more comfortable talking in a group to a trained professional then we have that in place, or there’s one-on-one support. So, there’s a triage in place to help on all levels.” After the initial triage process, each school can also bring in outside resources depending on the situation at hand, such as a dedicated crisis phone line or therapy dogs. “One thing I really like about this model is that it takes a look at safety and security through the lens of physical and 44 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2019 / atFishers.com

psychological safety, and how you really shouldn’t have one or the other - they go together,” Lawson says. “Traditional models have looked at physical safety and not taken into account the psychological safety, and the effects there.” Lawson feels programs like PREPaRE are helping to combat the stigma around mental health and making it easier for people of all ages to seek help when needed. “I don’t feel like the young people today feel as much of that stigma as maybe the older generations do,” she says. “Both of our high schools have clubs called Bring Change to Mind, and their whole goal is to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness in schools and the community. Our students are changing the conversation.” For additional details on the NASP PREPaRE curriculum, go to nasponline.org/professional-development/ prepare-training-curriculum. New Contemporary Asian Restaurant Opens Near Hamilton Town Center Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Belinda Russell

The Odyssey restaurant is, in several ways, the culmination of a decades-long family dream. Soon after immigrating from southern China to New York in the 1990s, siblings Kevin Ni and Sue Cheng observed their father open up his own small Chinese takeout eatery in Brooklyn Heights, and their interest was piqued by the possibilities of the restaurant industry. Located one block away from a busy subway stop, the business

was slammed daily just a few months after opening, and as teens Kevin and Sue got a full glimpse of what it takes to keep a restaurant humming along successfully.

By the mid-2000s Ni’s desire to open his own Asian-style eatery had not abated, and it was during a trip to the Midwest to visit relatives that he fell in love with the Hoosier state.

“Our father would make special dishes for us sometimes, and customers would ask what they were,” Cheng recalls. “Sometimes we would have them try some, and they said they wanted to buy some. So we made a unique menu for those particular customers. We couldn’t believe that people liked that kind of southern Asian cooking, and I think it made my brother passionate to have this own restaurant.”

“We were visiting relatives in Chicago, and my brother considered opening a restaurant there but he was starting a family and didn’t want his children to grow up in a big city,” Cheng says. “We’re from a small town in China. So he ventured out here to Indiana and felt like it was home.”

atFishers.com / DECEMBER 2019 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 45

Ni opened The Journey, an Indybased buffet-style seafood and steak

establishment, back in 2008, and just like his dad’s take-out business back in Brooklyn, it was an immediate success. In subsequent years he began to envisage another, more high-end Indy restaurant with Asian-fusion cuisine, and last year Ni and Cheng began work on The Odyssey on Tegler Drive near I-69. “We decided to call it The Odyssey because it’s what Kevin has wanted to do for a long time and it’s almost like coming home to that idea,” says Cheng, who co-owns the establishment with Ni and serves as general manager. “Just like the Odyssey story.”

“It’s primarily an Asian take with Chinese dishes, a lot of sushi choices and some western dishes that are popular in many With an understated, contemporary steakhouses,” explains Executive Chef Kevin interior, The Odyssey offers an extensive Fry, who previously held positions at Shula’s, menu of pan-Asian selections with Japanese, Morton’s and Hyde Park Prime Steakhouse. Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese elements, including a raw bar, sushi and sashimi, “We take some of those Asian and traditional seafood, noodle dishes, steaks American elements and elevate them to and more. a high-end level as far as the plating, the flavor and the accompaniments,” Fry adds. “The menu is definitely a team vision with me along with the owners, the sushi chef and Asian wok chef bringing in ideas and trying things out, too.” The lengthy sushi menu includes favorites like the California roll and tuna roll as well as specialty rolls like the Big Island (tempura Hawaiian yellowtail, crispy asparagus and avocado) and the Tokyo Pearl (tempura sea scallion, spicy mayo and barbecue unagi). “Our sushi chef is one of the best, and he’s worked with chef (Masaharu) Morimoto in

Philadelphia,” Fry says. “We have popular selections that everyone is familiar with like the Dragon roll, and then we have our own take on some other rolls. He even has a scallop ceviche and several different things that he has his own take on from all his travels and sushi training.” The Odyssey staff held a soft opening on March 21, and Cheng and Ni plan to continually adjust, refine and improve their menu as circumstances warrant — just like their father did more than two decades ago back in New York to keep his customers happy. “This is definitely the owners’ masterpiece, where they are putting together all of their ideas based on their experiences so far and elevating those ideas for a high-end restaurant,” Fry says. The Odyssey is located at 13521 Tegler Drive in Noblesville. Call 317-774-5797 or visit them online at theodysseyindy.com for more info.
