THE LATEST HOMETOWN HAPPENINGS AROUND FISHERS
Jennifer Kehl has been the city clerk since Fishers switched from being a town to a city. Ms. Kehl will be running for re-election on the Republican general election ballot in November, defeating political newcomer Rachel Segars in the May primary election. Kehl received 1,766 votes (68%) and Segars had 820 votes (32%).
For the 2023-2024 school year, the Teacher of the Year for Hamilton Southeastern Schools will be Johanna Kitchell, orchestra teacher at Riverside Intermediate and Junior High School. There were two other finalists for Teacher of Year, Heather Skaggs, fourthgrade teacher at Brooks School Elementary, and Erin Ingwersen, math teacher at Fishers High School. The announcement was made at the end-of-the-school-year celebration in May.
HAND Inc., a local nonprofit focused on affordable housing, has broken ground on the group’s first Fishers development, Cumberland Cottages, located on less than two acres along Cumberland Road just south of 141st Street. There will be 11 rental units. Five will be at market rate and six will have rents based on the tenant’s income. Plans call for building four two-bedroom units and seven three-bedroom units in what’s known as a cottage court layout, clustered around shared green space. Construction is projected to be complete by early 2024.
HAND held its annual housing conference on May 3. Community organizations attending the event agreed that there is a widening gap between household incomes and housing costs. According to real estate experts, so far in 2023, Hamilton County has had more million-dollar home sales (58) than home sales under $200,000 (38).
Kroger received approvals from the Fishers Board of Zoning Appeals, allowing the grocer zoning variances for a freestanding ATM, landscaping, associated signage for a new grocery store,
fueling center use without an associated convenience store, a kiosk, an associated fueling-center canopy, landscaping, and signage for a new grocery store fueling station. The allows Kroger to move forward with plans to move across Allisonville Road to a much larger location north of 116th Street.
Fishers held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Geist Waterfront Park on May 24, with the facility open to the public for the first time May 27. The city charges a $50 parking fee if no Fishers resident is in the vehicle. City residents may park for free through a phone app.
In response to allegations of racial profiling, the Fishers Police Department conducted an internal investigation looking into the incident. Police Chief Ed Gebhart issued a statement saying the investigation “confirmed officers responded in accordance with department policy and procedure.”
The Fishers City Council gave first-reading approval for a new public nuisance ordinance. The measure calls for a system so city officials can deal with businesses creating constant calls for public safety service. If given final council approval, the new ordinance would be effective on August 1 of this year.
The Hamilton Southeastern school board is considering a proposal to deal with academic dishonesty, when a student uses artificial intelligence and says it is her/his work. The board is also considering a proposed change for students absent from school for more than 10 consecutive school days, whether for vacation or family emergencies (in or out of the country), or for cultural/ religious reasons - those students will be asked to unenroll from the school. No action has been taken on these changes.
Brooke Lawson has led the Hamilton Southeastern Schools mental health program since its inception, but has left the local school district. She accepted a similar post in Carmel.

A Taste of Europe
TWIGS & TEA BRINGS
AFTERNOON TEA TO FISHERS
Writer / Megan Arszman
Photographer / Sam Zachrich
Like a good cup of tea, Twigs & Tea is richly steeped in the history of Fishers. The womanowned boutique and tearoom has survived a few moves and seen the growth of the city, starting when 116th Street was a simple two-lane road.
Debbie Cook, the owner and manager of Twigs & Tea, is a longtime resident of Fishers and has seen how much the town has grown. She and her husband have lived here for 40 years.
Twigs & Tea first opened as a tea shop and boutique 25 years ago, selling a collection of teas shipped over from Europe that Cook handpicked herself. Unique items fitting the shop’s motif filled the shelves. It wasn’t until later that Cook decided to fulfill her dream of having a full-service boutique with a tearoom.
“I had always wanted to have a place where ladies could come in and shop, enjoy some fresh, unique foods and just make an afternoon out of being in one location,” Cook says.
After being closed for almost two years as a result of the pandemic and building the new location, the tearoom reopened in March. “We’re more like a French cafe than a tearoom, but because we are also a tea shop, it fits,” Cook says. “When I started the tearoom seven years ago, I never realized how much people would be drawn to it. I didn’t know how much people would like our food. That brings them back in.”
The current location sits inside a quaint Victorian home. The second floor is leased by a medical spa, so visitors can get a massage followed by lunch and shopping. It is the perfect setting for quaint and classic affairs such as bridal showers, baby showers and catered events. Afternoon teas are a favorite amongst visitors, and Hoosiers can make reservations to be taken off to Europe (without the airfare) with a mouthwatering selection of scones, finger sandwiches, seasonal desserts and teas.
“We have a limited menu but everyone loves it,” Cook says. “Our specialty is scones, and I believe I received the biggest compliment when a woman from England complimented us on our scones, saying they were the best she had ever had.”
Additional favorite items on the menu include their quiche, chicken salad and homemade bread pudding. Everything is made in-house and fresh.
“We’re not your regular restaurant or regular shop,” Cook says. “We specialize in great items at a great price point, while serving delicious food.”
Check out the tea shop and restaurant at 11399 Lantern Road in Fishers. For more info, call 317-288-4329 or visit twigsandtea.com.

INTERIOR DESIGN, REIMAGINED
DOVETAIL GROUP TAKES A PERSONALIZED APPROACH TO DESIGN AND REMODELING
Just like a dovetail joint in woodworking, Dovetail Group’s Co-Founders and Senior Interior Designers found that their individual areas of expertise easily fit and work well together. Liz has a background in home furnishings, finishes and fixtures, while Kayla has experience with construction management and interior design. Combining their skill sets resulted in a unique business that not only provides services for interior design and remodels, but also provides support for furnishings and decor.
The concept of blending two aspects of the furnishing and decor industry that are usually separate has paid off. Clients appreciate a full scope of services, which range from initial planning through trade installations including cabinetry, countertop surfaces, lighting and plumbing fixtures, plus finishing touches of furnishings and decor. After being in business since 2015, the firm recently moved to East New Market Street in the Village of WestClay. Although it is a new location, the building is familiar.
“The move was destiny,” Kayla says. “It was meant to be. In 2016 we were designers for the space, and since then have continued to do both commercial and residential projects for the owner of the building. It is as current as it was seven years ago, which is the goal for all our work. We still love the flooring and the paint!”
“It was spur of the moment, not a planned move,” Liz says. “Our landlord told us a tenant was moving out. Our company and team were growing. Now we have more natural light and more room for displays. We have doubled our space and our team.”
The duo shares that they don’t have a “signature” style. Instead, care is taken to ensure each project exhibits the client’s taste. Nothing is forced on them. A balance is struck between the homeowner’s style and the architecture of the home.
“We want to make sure their home reflects them and not us,” Kayla says. “We really get to know them. Recently we had a great experience working with a couple who has been in their home for 18 years. It was an
entire main-level remodel in a traditional architectural setting. Besides the remodel, they took advantage of the help we provided with home furnishings and finish and fixture selections. It was a fun collaboration and flowed well. Now they want to do phase two and work on the upstairs and lower level.”
Both Liz and Kayla want to be involved in every project. The first step of any project begins with a complimentary consultation, where both of them meet with the potential client at the site or space to be worked on. The second meeting occurs in the firm’s studio, where a customized design agreement is reviewed for approval.
“For each client, during the design process, there are three contacts - the two of us plus one of our Interior Designers,” Liz says. “We have great designers who support and collaborate with the homeowner. They visit the space to be worked on, field measure, draw up a floor plan and do a 3D rendering alongside us.”
“After a complete design package is developed, contractors are consulted,” Kayla

says. “We have long-standing relationships with vendors and contractors, and figure out the right fit for each job. As the project progresses, we are the advocates for the client.”
For anyone thinking of updating their home, the two women offer a couple tips. Liz feels that people want to simplify life through clean lines and neutrals, and yearn for a brighter atmosphere overall. Kayla concurs that it’s a good idea to stick with neutrals and add layers of color through upholstery, rugs and artwork.

STEPS IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION
PARTICIPANTS ARE LIKE FAMILY AT WISHES DANCE STUDIO
Wishes Dance Studio is beginning its 20th year of providing quality dance instruction and much more to the north side. Its longevity is due in part because it welcomes everyone, even if they have never danced before. A second reason for its popularity is the way it involves all members of the family.
“Wishes Dance Studio offers a lot,” says Kelley Richards, owner. “There is something for everyone - babies to adults, beginners to advanced and recreational to professional. We are family friendly. Wishes is more than a dance studio. We are a dance family. There are so many opportunities for families to
come together and dance. Baby classes, where the infant sits up in the lap of an adult, are free. Our Christmas show had 30 dads, dressed like elves dancing with their daughters and mothers, dancing to ‘All I Want for Christmas Is a Cowgirl.’”
The studio offers a large variety of classes. Included are acro dance, ballet and pointe, conditioning, contemporary, hip-hop, jazz, modern, musical theater, tap, and W Crew, an all-boy hip-hop class. There are beginning classes for teens and adults. Individuals can begin instruction at any age without fear they will be placed with
younger children.
Many students enjoy being part of Wishes’ performance companies. The first three companies are open to anyone who wants to sign up. Genies include grades kindergarten to four, Twilights is for grades five to eight, and Dream Catchers for grades nine to 12. An audition is required to participate in the Starlettes, which is modeled after the Rockettes. Synergy membership is by invitation.
The companies have performed at venues outside of the studio. Members can pick
Writer / Julie Yates Photographers / Ryan Friar & Amy Payne
and choose which opportunities to take part in. Some have included sports games hosted by the Indianapolis Indians, Indiana Pacers and Indy Eleven, plus attractions such as the Statue of Liberty. Currently, a Royal Caribbean Cruise is being planned for October.
Twice per year, Wishes Dance Studio participates in competitions. This season the studio was honored to receive sought-after recognition. First place was earned at both competitions. The studio’s choreographer, Joel Flynn, was the recipient of the Best Choreography award. The achievement that made Richards the proudest was winning the Shining Star award.
“The Shining Star is given to the studio with the best dressing room and backstage etiquette,” Richards says. “Our dancers are very humble and sweet. It’s a big award and the one that meant the most to me.”
During summertime, academies run
Monday through Thursday. Sessions are held in the morning and afternoon. Students can bring their lunch to eat between sessions while supervised by the instructors. Besides dancing, crafts and games are part of the fun. Sign-ups are ongoing and even if a day is missed, it doesn’t matter since something new is learned each day. Every
Thursday, families and friends come in for a weekly show.
The summer academies are grouped by ages 3 to 5, 6 to 10, and 11 and up. Each themed session includes plenty of dancing and lots of fun.
Summer Intensive, for ballet level seven and above, will be held July 17 to 20. This program is for ages 8 and up, but typically draws many high school students. Participants are put in groups according to their dance levels and professional dancers from all over the country are brought in as instructors. On Thursday night of the session there is an all-night sleep over, which includes games and pizza while watching videos of past performances by the studio’s students.
Another summer happening is the Synergy concert featuring the Starlettes. It will be held on July 28 and 29 at 7 p.m. at Wishes Dance Studio. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
This fall the highly anticipated Wishes Spooky Dance Studio and Trunk or Treat will take place on Saturday, October 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. Open to the public, families travel through the studio, stopping at various intervals to be entertained by the haunted happenings. After playing games, a cabaret features dancers performing under a chandelier. Lights can be on or off to accommodate those with young children.
Next stop is the Castle Room where Nina
the Ballerina, the ghost who haunts the studio, will dance with the family. Suddenly a phantom appears on the balcony of the room. From there a fortune teller shares everyone’s future. After that, it’s on to the ballroom for a masquerade ball complete with the Sanderson sisters from the movie “Hocus Pocus” in attendance. The experience ends by leaving through the back door of the studio. Trick-or-treating is a sweet ending as candy is given out via the open trunks of cars.
On December 2 and 3 the studio will present “Christmas Wishes” at the Schrott Center for the Arts on the Butler University campus. Auditions for the program will be held on Friday, August 25 at Wishes. Each audition takes about half an hour and is done by age groups. Richards suggests calling the studio ahead of time to see the time for each age level.
“My daughter and I designed the Christmas program,” Richards says. “I was tired of going to so many ‘Nutcracker’ performances. It is made up of individual stories where Santa makes a child’s wish come true. For instance, in one, a little girl wishes to fly and the character Elphaba from the musical ‘Wicked’ comes to teach her
how. Anna, Elsa and Olaf from ‘Frozen’ will have a part in a story as well.”
Next year’s Spring Wishes Celebration 2024 is already being planned. All students will participate in the performance to be held on April 28 and May 5. There will be a fatherdaughter dance performance that could also include a big brother or grandpa. Other types of family numbers planned are waltz, hip-hop and tap.
Also in the works is participation in the 2024 Spark!Fishers festival. Members of the studio’s performance companies will be in the parade. They will also dance on the stage.
“Wishes has been a huge blessing in my life,” Richards says. “I can’t imagine life without Wishes. I am so lucky to be surrounded by a group of instructors who are not only talented, but beautiful people inside and out. They are my Wishes dream team.”
Wishes Dance Studio is located at 12810 Ford Drive in Fishers. Call 317-435-2541, email info@wishesdance.com, or go to wishesdance.com for more info, and also view them on Facebook and Instagram.

STYLISH SUPPORT
THE INDY HAT PROJECT SUPPORTS ADULTS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES THROUGH THE VILLAGE OF MERICI
Back in November, Cincinnati Bengals offensive lineman Ted Karras launched The Cincy Hat as a philanthropic endeavor to benefit the Village of Merici in Indianapolis. Bengals fandom quickly took notice of the hat, and sales skyrocketed. To date, Karras has sold over 10,000 hats with a revenue of $375,000. Karras contributed an impressive $100,000 of his money to the project to get the ball rolling.
Karras has been a longtime supporter of Village of Merici, its mission and the people it serves. The organization provides direct support services, learning opportunities, and independent living through partnerships with various developers. The Village of Merici currently supports more than 75 people throughout Indianapolis with a goal of self-reliance.
Matt Renie, longtime friend of Karras and partner in The Cincy Hat project, says with the explosion of sales, it seemed only natural to add an Indy hat to the mix. The month of May is the best month of the year for many Indianapolis residents due to the Indy 500. With that in mind, Renie says they decided to design The Indy Hat. The hat features the iconic checkered flag that race fans know and love. Sales of The Indy Hat began April 6 and they have generated about $20,000 in revenue so far. There are also polo shirts with the same logo available.
“My family is a big Indy 500 family, and it’s always top of mind this time of year,” Renie says. “The Indy Hat project is more of a grassroots effort than The Cincy Hat. So, we knew it wouldn’t be an explosion of sales like The Cincy Hat, but I’m proud of what we’ve already accomplished.”

Karyl Davis, director of development for Village of Merici, says The Cincy Hat has been instrumental to the organization’s success. The funds raised from the sales of the hats and donations will help to finish a third building full of affordable housing for individuals with disabilities.
“Ted’s passion for our mission and his involvement has been transformational for the organization as a whole, but also the people we support,” Davis says. “They love when he comes to visit. It’s been so much fun, and we’re so grateful he’s shining a light on what we do and giving the people we support a purpose.”

But what exactly makes GVC Mortgage stand out against the rest?

In addition to their great customer service, the GVC Mortgage office in Fishers has consultants fluent in other languages besides English. They have loan officers fluent in Spanish, Hindi and Arabic to better serve those in the community whose primary language is not English.

“Making the transaction as easy and simple as possible is the most important part of our business,” says Jackson. “There’s a lot of information when it comes to the loan process, and we want to make it as pleasant as we can for our customers.”
Are you interested in doing business with Jackson and the folks at GVC Mortgage in Fishers? The next steps to get started are easy.
Steve Jackson is a longtime loan officer and branch manager. Most recently, Jackson is the branch manager of the new GVC Mortgage office in Fishers.
GVC Mortgage has been in the business of assisting clients in the home-buying process for over 25 years. Founded in 1996, the Voyles children created this mortgage company to honor their late father, Gene Voyles. GVC Mortgage began in Pendleton and continues to be headquartered there.
Now, GVC Mortgage is licensed in eight states, and has over 40 branches with more than 320 team members. Fishers is one of the newest locations, and opened in January of 2023. Within this new branch, Jackson is not only working with clients for their home-

First, call the Fishers GVC Mortgage location and schedule an appointment or phone consultation with a loan officer. This will consist of meeting your mortgage consultant, and they will ask some general questions, set up expectations and explain the next steps. The consultant will take the information you have given them and determine what program is best for you moving forward in your homebuying journey. Your GVC loan officer will issue you a pre-approval letter, at which point you can begin looking at homes with your real estate agent. If you are not working with an agent, your loan officer can refer you to one of the top agents in your area.
Simply put, Jackson and his team in Fishers are dedicated to creating a successful mortgage loan experience.

THE MURAL OF THE STORY
WILKINSON BROTHERS COMPLETE DOWNTOWN MURAL
Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Justin Sicking
This spring a vibrant new landmark appeared in downtown Fishers. Located on the wall of a renovated building at 8684 East 116th Street, the eyecatching mural is 24’x30’. Its retro postcard sensibility announces “Greetings From Fishers” as it embraces the community’s past, while being part of the new mixed-use development, Nickel Plate Station.
Corey Wilkinson and his twin brother, Casey Wilkinson, owners of Wilkinson Brothers, a graphic design and illustration studio, designed and hand-painted the massive illustration. In the summer of 2022 the Fishers Arts & Culture Commission, along with the City of Fishers, put out the
call for artists or creative companies who had the qualifications to complete a mural project. The goal for the finished project was street art that was colorful and Instagramable, and conveyed a sense of place.
“We threw our hat into the ring,” says Corey Wilkinson, a Fishers resident since 2003. “Right away we made sketches, mock-ups and color renderings on the computer. We wanted to give homage to the community, not just generate random artwork. The Reid family funded the project. Christopher Reid is the CEO of CRG Residential, which, in a public-private partnership between the City of Fishers and Browning, is developing Nickel Plate Station. From start to finish, we
worked around the weather and the project took around four weeks to complete. The first thing we did after the boom lift was dropped off was to paint a white square that acted as a blank piece of paper. Later, the white was a good base for the bright colors to stick to.”
The building on which the mural is painted was built in 1913, and is one of two historic structures under renovation by CRG Residential. It was originally a bank, complete with a vault, and even housed several restaurants during its existence. Next to it, the second building saved was built in 1886. Significant repairs were made to both the foundations and brickwork. Retail space

will be constructed on the first floors with residential housing above it.
“We worked with the Department of Public Works to have four streetlights turned off one night so we could project the image on the wall to a very large scale,” Wilkinson says. “I took a graphite pencil over the lines of the projection. It took two or three hours and when it was daylight, we could see the lines. Later, as we filled them in with paint, we had several prints in front of us to reference color and design.”
Due to its size, drivers have a good view of the mural while traveling east, but pedestrians enjoying walkable downtown Fishers can get a full appreciation. The colorful montage has images that reflect the city’s past and present. The flowing blue water suggests the fork in the White River, where settler William Conner built his cabin - the site of Conner Prairie living history museum today. Another reference to the museum is the hot-air balloon, while the blue heron painted by the water is a nod to Geist.
It’s appropriate that since the mural is nestled in Nickel Plate Station, one of its features is a train. It has two dates on either side. On the left is 1872, the year Salathiel Fisher platted the town, then known as Fisher’s Switch or Fishers Station. On the right, 2015 is the year the Town of Fishers became a city.
The stamp in the top right states “Mudsock,” the nickname for Fishers. The horse in the center represents the buggy days, and the face of Salathiel Fisher can be seen at the bottom. It too carries the year 1872, but also 1908, when the post office dropped the word “Switch” and the apostrophe, to make the name of the town Fishers.
“We are already missing the people we saw when working on the project,” Wilkinson says. “People would honk and give us the thumbs-up sign, and we’d stop to pet dogs being walked. It was great to get away from the computer, get outside and paint with a brush. Because of the old rough brick, we had to pull and push
the paint in. We got the paint at the local Sherwin-Williams Paint Store on Fishers Crossing Drive.”
“We are thankful to the City of Fishers for the chance to paint the mural, and to the Reid family for funding it,” he adds. “Chris Reid wanted to make sure kids and adults had something to see commemorating the development of the Nickel Plate District.
We would love to do more murals in the future and hope this project leads other local municipalities do the same.”
The mural is located at 8684 East 116th Street in Fishers. For more information on Wilkinson Brothers graphic design and illustration studio, visit wilkinsonbrothers.com.
