Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness was direct in his comments before the City Council on May 20, expressing that his city is as efficient as any municipality in the state, yet state tax distribution systems shortchange Fishers. To remain competitive with surrounding communities and the private sector, the City Council voted unanimously to provide city employees a midyear hike in basic pay.
Public safety workers will see a $2,500 increase in their annual pay. Other city employees will receive a $1,000 annual hike in pay. Fadness says this will cost the city about $500,000 in 2024 and roughly $1 million in 2025. The pay increase will be effective in the current pay period. Fadness emphasizes this pay increase will not apply to any elected officials. The mayor says this midyear pay action is unusual, but the gap in compensation has been growing. This is not a bonus, but part of the base pay for each employee.
Fadness repeated an assertion he made on a recent podcast with me, saying the property tax and income tax distribution system established by state law penalizes Fishers, and it is his long-term goal to work toward advocating for what he describes as a system that treats Fishers fairly. He cites Carmel as an example, in which that city receives $60 million more per year in property and income taxes compared to Fishers. Fadness calls this gap “staggering.”
HAND Inc, a local nonprofit with a goal of providing affordable housing, is finishing its first project in Fishers, Cumberland Cottages, at 141st Street and Cumberland Road. The 11 units will feature five at
market-rate rents, and six with rents based on affordable-housing criteria. The original Cumberland Cottages plan was for 11 detached units, but budget challenges changed that. However, HAND is looking forward to opening the project. “We’re really excited,” says HAND Executive Director Andrea Davis. “This is the first of this kind of design that we’ve done with the homes oriented around shared green space. It’s called a cottage court design.”
As the school year ended for 2023-2024, the Hamilton Southeastern (HSE) school district announced the Teacher of the Year for this school year, and the winner is Aimee Bastin. She has 30 years of public education experience. She currently serves as a resource teacher and also chairs the exceptional learners department at Fall Creek Junior High School. “I think of teaching like if you want to go into sales, and you want to be a good salesperson, you have to believe in the product,” says Bastin. “I believe in what we do here at HSE.”
She is also a leader in professional development, sharing the latest information on new accessibility tools and learning strategies for students. Along with the honor of being named HSE’s Teacher of the Year, Bastin was awarded a $500 prize from the Hamilton Southeastern Education Foundation. She will also move forward as the district’s nominee for the Indiana Department of Education’s Teacher of the Year competition.
For several years, people living in the northeast part of Fishers, in the area of Southeastern Parkway and Cyntheanne Road, have wanted a grocery store nearby.
Meijer is proposing a grocery at that location, but several residents of the area voiced their opposition to this store in this location. The Fishers City Council listened to a presentation from representatives of Meijer, describing the proposed store as smaller than most other locations, such as the current facility in Noblesville. This Meijer store would offer only groceries and a pharmacy. Since this is the first reading of the proposed text amendment, there was no public hearing, but a public hearing will be part of the Plan Commission consideration. Even though there was no formal public hearing, residents in the area of the proposed grocery voiced their concerns and outright opposition to the project during the community comment time at the end of May 20th’s council session.
Family Express describes themselves as a family-owned enterprise that began in northern Indiana with 81 locations, and wants to build a convenience store, fueling station, car wash and pet wash near the interchange at State Road 37 and 135th Street, near the Zaxby’s and Taco Bell. If all goes as planned, Family Express expects to open in late 2024.
With a new school board in office for more than a year and a new school superintendent hired, many top administrators have chosen to leave the HSE school district, which means new administrators come on board. Tige Butts will be the new principal at Fishers Junior High School. Drew Tower has been hired as athletic director of Hamilton Southeastern High School. Bryan Rausch is poised to take the HSE assistant superintendent of operations post in July.

LOCAL BUSINESSMAN UNDERTAKES ADVENTURES IN SPORTSWEAR AND FRAGRANCES
Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Michael DurrIn 2005, Anthony Leach was proud when his son, Grant, made the fourth-grade basketball travel team - so much so that he also decided to jump in as a coach. Hoopmatics Basketball was born, which has led Leach down a path towards sports.
Leach, who has worked for several Fortune 500 companies, spent the first half of his career in consumer products, and the second half in sales and marketing for biopharmaceutical companies. In 2017 he also founded Prep Ball Stars, designed to help student-athletes highlight and promote their skills. Ultimately, Grant not only received a Division I college scholarship, but also helped 25 other players get to college through basketball; two of them attended medical school. While coaching, Leach began making gear for the kids at his camps. Coaches kept approaching him to ask if he could make gear for their teams too.
“I thought, ‘I don’t want to just create uniforms for people. I want to create a brand,’” Leach recalls.
So in 2020 he launched Sports Ventures International (SVI) Sportswear, which has since become one of the fastest-growing sportswear companies in the Midwest. Its primary targets are schools, teams and businesses. They have 150-plus schools and colleges in more than 18 states. More than 120 AAU programs either wear or have worn the brand, including six current or
former NBA player-sponsored programsJeff Teague, George Hill, Trey Lyles, Kyle Guy, Jake LaRavia and Blake Wesley.
SVI is also MBE and Mid-States certified, and boasts Indianapolis Pal Club, Indy Chamber, Indianapolis Public Schools, Residence Inn, Mozel Sanders Thanksgiving Drive, Jack & Jill, and Card & Associates as clients. They are also the official sportswear partner for Card & Associates, which owns Mojo Up Sports Complex in Noblesville, Pacers Athletic Center in Westfield and Farmers Bank Fieldhouse in Lebanon. “Working with SVI has been great, and we consider them a true partner with us”, says Eric Schellhamer, President of Mojo Up Sports Complex.
“Our partnership also allows us to connect our customers with our branded gear for retail on the weekends or at special events,” says Leach, who has two sons, Grant, 28, and Maxwell, 16. Grant is currently chief operating officer of the company, with a plan to be chief executive officer within five years. Grant, a 2014 Hamilton Southeastern grad, is also building the business in Illinois where he currently resides. Leach has lived in the Fishers area for 24 years and has seen the city’s growth firsthand.
“This is a family business, and we want to continue to grow with Fishers but also expand globally,” Leach says. SVI’s motto is “Create your own adventure,” so they strive
to help companies and programs create their own look and image for their sportswear.
“We want our customers to have the best and most creative experience at a competitive price,” Leach says.
SVI sponsors Dizzy Runs Pro Am, to be held at Mojo Up Sports Complex. It is hosted by Kyle Guy, 2016 Mr. Basketball. Last year Tyrese Haliburton, Obi Toppin, Trayce Jackson-Davis, Jeff Teague, Jaden Ivey, and 2024 Mr. Basketball Flory Bidunga all played. Admission is free.
SVI also provides the gear for City League, another local Pro Am of mainly local players and overseas players, which is held at the Boner Community Center downtown. The Flory Bidunga Basketball Camp takes place on July 30 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for youths in grades three through eight. Campers get a T-shirt, drills/instruction, and lunch. Registration costs $125 per child. Prep Ball Stars EPO is a girls and boys high school league for elite players only. It will be held at Mojo Up Sports Complex on August 7, 14 and 21 from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. ($10 admission).
In June 2023, SVI sponsored a basketball camp in Grasse, France. While there, Leach and his partner, Kelley Peoples, attended a fragrance-making class. They enjoyed it so much that they researched the concept and brought it back to Indy. In May, the couple
opened Truly Fragrance Bar near Keystone at the Crossing, where customers can curate, name and bottle their own one-of-akind fragrance.
“It’s nice to be the only person to have your scent,” Peoples says. “You can make it spicy or rosy - whatever you want.”
Customers can sign up online for a 90-minute Scent Event class, held at 12:45 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. They begin each class by giving customers a brief introduction to the history of fragrance before giving them step-by-step instructions on making their own. At the end of class, guests indulge in a complimentary champagne toast.
Included in the cost of the class is one 30-milliliter bottle of the fragrance that you
create. After making three scents, customers choose the one they like best to take home. Should they want two or all three of their creations, they are available for purchase. The Scent Event costs $99 for one, or two for $149. They also have VIP and Corporate Scent Events that include food. These prices are $1,000 for up to 12, $2,000 for up to 24, and $2,500 for up to 30. In addition, five Signature Fragrances are available for $59 in-store and online.
When Truly Fragrance Bar opened on Mother’s Day, Chris Evans, the Cincinnati Bengals’ running back, brought his mom and dad in for the event. In addition, Jannon Lampley, who became the first black female coach to lead a girls team to an IHSAA state championship, has been a client. The Scent Event is a fun experience for couples, friends, mother-daughter duos,
family nights or even business parties. Truly Fragrance Bar hosted a VIP event for a family in the Cambridge community last month. They also have VIP and Corporate Scent Events that include food.
“It’s great for couples, date night, or an outing for your team or staff,” Leach says.

Since 1997, Hoosier Burn Camp has been providing support and lifechanging experiences for children who have suffered mental, physical and emotional trauma after a burn injury. The nonprofit offers monthly activities and an annual summer camp for young burn survivors, where they can be just one of the kids in a safe and supportive environment. The office of the Indiana State Fire Marshal and Riley Hospital for Children conceived the concept. Children are now referred to the program from Riley Hospital for
Children and St. Joseph Hospital in Fort Wayne.
“Burn victims suffer not only physically, but mentally and emotionally as well,” says Mark Koopman, executive director. “Sometimes survivor’s guilt is involved. However, the parents, siblings and extended family are also suffering. We wanted to support the entire family alongside activities where kids can be just one of the kids for a while.”
Through the tireless work of dedicated board members, staff and hundreds of volunteers, Hoosier Burn Camp
provides character-building experiences to help participants develop the personal strength to reach their highest potential. Monthly activities include going to see Disney on Ice, trips to a dude ranch, winter skiing trips, spa days, camping trips, boating excursions, King’s Island trips, Colts games and more.
“Most of our volunteers and board members are retired firefighters volunteering their time,” Koopman says. “They’ve said it’s been so meaningful to them that they cannot imagine not being a part of our organization. We’re
also seeking more volunteers to assist in our mission.”
The perennial event of Hoosier Burn Camp is the annual summer camp at Camp Tecumseh in Brookston, Indiana, each May. Campers participate in various outdoor activities and personal enrichment exercises during the week-long stay. The campers get to choose three activities during the week of camp. These range from dance, LEGO Masters and Top Chef activities to fishing, paddleboarding and swimming. Kids also participate in camp games that go with that year’s theme. Individual cabins can spend time doing activities together as well.
“Each year there is an annual visitors day for people to come to check out the camp,” Koopman says. “There is a parade, opening ceremonies, children and guest activities, lunch, check presentations, and tours of the camp.”
Hoosier Burn Camp assists children from all areas of the state including Fishers. Koopman says the organization
has had great support from the Fishers Fire Department since 1999.

One individual can make a difference. That’s what Justin Davis, a Fishers resident, realtor and global missionary, wants everyone to know. For Davis, the groundwork for adventure and serving others was laid early. He remembers his father taking a month-long trip to Sierra Leone to build schoolhouses, and recalls being very intrigued - and proud - that his dad took the opportunity to help people who needed it.
Years later, after starting his freshman year at Indiana University, Davis got involved with Christian Student Fellowship, an oncampus student ministry.
“I owe so much to that ministry and the folks involved,” Davis says. “That’s when I started taking mission trips, working at
summer camp and getting plugged into a good church back in Indy. Everything good seemed to flow from that campus ministry.”
Davis has spent a week in India helping at a children’s home through ServLife, an Indianapolis-based mission organization, 12 days in Nepal helping at another children’s home, and a month in Turkey for a cultural immersion trip through Common Ground Christian Church. He also spent a week in Provence, France, where he stayed with a family of seven and helped on their organic grain farm, waking up at 3 a.m. every day to help the father bake over 100 loaves of sourdough, rye, baguettes and focaccia in a massive wood-fired oven.
For 23 years, Davis has been visiting various
parts of Mexico. He’s been to San Luis Potosí, home of the Casa De Niños mission, over a dozen times through Christian Student Fellowship.
“Casa De Niños [now Emanuel Mexico Mission] takes children that have been abused, neglected or abandoned and loves them as much as they can,” Davis says. “I keep visiting this mission because I just love it. These children who have no family and no one to love them are given an ultra-safe, Christ-centered family and it completely changes their lives.”
He has also led a group of students from IU Christian Student Fellowship in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina in 2007. Together they helped clear out mold and
debris from homes that were flooded by the hurricane. Shortly after, in 2010, Davis visited Haiti just four months after the devastating earthquake that took the lives of more than 100,000 people. He assisted one of his mentors, James Gray, on a documentary that interviewed Haiti locals and missionaries. The trip was through Christianville, a mission based in Gressier, Haiti, with a stateside headquarters in Indianapolis.
On most mission trips, Davis’ work involves construction projects, painting, cleaning out water tanks on top of children’s homes, teaching kids and helping them with daily tasks, leading teens on adventure trips, fundraising, organizing and throwing big neighborhood garage sales, and taking medical supplies and food to locals who need it.
“When I became a Christian shortly before college and started going on mission trips, a whole new world was open to me,” Davis says. “I could not only get to visit new cultures, make new friends, learn new languages and try new foods, but I was able to do that while engaging in work which I believe honored a loving God and humanity. There’s no better feeling than helping someone.”
When Davis is not serving others, he is spending time with his wife, Sarah Wright Davis, a longtime teacher at Fall Creek Junior High, and growing his real estate career with the Fishers-based Berkshire Hathaway office as a real estate agent. The couple also has a 16-month-old son, Jack.
“I love real estate,” he says. “I love meeting and serving new people and walking them through one of the most important times of their lives. I try to give my clients the same devotion and commitment I’ve seen missionaries devote to the children in Mexico. It’s less philanthropic work, of course, but it’s still a very tangible and real way to serve others when they need it.”
Above all, Davis urges those interested in serving others to seek it out. He is proof that one person can make a difference.

Activity levels during the day have a lot to do with our health. We all know that a daily walk or jog on the Nickel Plate Trail is ideal, but what about the little extras that you do to add more overall movement into your day? Increasing your total daily energy expenditure can lead to impressive health benefits.
How does movement - even leisurely movement - help?
Writer / Lindsay WillardAny type of activity will burn calories, which could lead to increased energy levels, better mood and improved sleep. Movement also helps to maintain muscle tone, which is important, considering sarcopenia (agerelated muscle loss) can begin in our 30s.
What are some ways we can increase movement in our daily routines?
Carrying kitchen towels from the upstairs laundry room to the kitchen? Take multiple trips. Bringing in groceries from the car to the home? Again, multiple trips! Need to use the restroom at work? Visit one a little further away from your desk. Stopping for coffee? Go into the store to pick up your order rather than using the drive-through. Obviously, being productive is never a negative thing, but embrace the moments when you’re a little less structured. It may work to your advantage!
Consider a typical day. How much time is spent behind the wheel of your car? How much time is spent in front of a computer? How often do you sit and scroll on your phone? Does your work require you to attend meetings where (you guessed it!) you spend the time seated? Whenever you’re able, stand up and stretch. Take a few deep breaths before you sit back down. Practice some seated stretches at your desk. Perform seated toe raises beneath your desk. Bounce your heels as you work. There are plenty of ways to fidget your way to more activity.
meals are all great ways to move more. Water your garden or flowers on a more regular basis. Walk to your mailbox to grab the mail. There are probably a few items on your spring cleaning list; make a concerted effort to tackle a few of those each week.
Our bodies are smart little machines; we use energy for the most basic of functions, including breathing, blinking our eyes and smiling. But while a great workout is always a welcome thing for our heart, lungs and muscles, don’t underestimate the power of the small things that truly add up. Now go grab those last few kitchen towels from the upstairs laundry room. Trust me; you’ll feel amazing.
Is takeout or DoorDash your go-to after a long day? When time allows, make an extra meal or two at home. Walking through your kitchen, chopping vegetables and cooking

The last day of school hit a little bit differently this year. My youngest became a senior and the floodgate of emotions broke open; I am officially beginning the process of becoming an empty nester.
I feel so conflicted about this next stage of life. While I know beyond a doubt that the pain of losing my identity and purpose as “mom” is going to hit hard, I also find myself feeling a little excited. Dare I even say that out loud? I’m going to lean into that because the excitement of discovering a new me in this new chapter of life sounds way more fun than sitting on the couch every night feeling sorry for myself.
I realize everyone’s life circumstances are different and becoming an empty nester may not be as impactful due to existing obligations, but just in case you might find yourself looking for some inspiration, let’s dream a little, shall we?
Since I just bought Fishers Magazine last year, I know a lot of my time will be spent diving deeper into my work life, but my free time will be different whether I like it or not. Dinner can be optional. Laundry can wait. Practices and games won’t fill the gaps. How do I want to fill that time? Is this a new hobby? Does this also include finding a new social life? I believe both can be achieved at the same time if that’s desired.
First, let’s reintroduce ourselves to ourselves. Surely our interests and likes have changed over the years, so we have to figure out what gets us fired up, what gets our wheels turning again and what ignites that spark for life. Think about what you used to like before adulting became your hobby. How did you like to spend your free time? If those interests need to be replaced, think about the things you’d like to experience or do before your time on Earth is over.
“WHEN YOU STOP LEARNING, YOU START DYING.”
—ALBERT EINSTEIN
EXAMPLES OF THE WHAT:
• Knitting, crocheting, quilting; cooking, baking, wine/beer/liquor crafting.
• Bird watching, along with photography.
• Woodworking, furniture restoration and flipping.
• Pickleball, hiking/walking, biking.
• Music and/or voice lessons.
• Learn new skills, go back to school.
• Volunteer, foster, host a foreign exchange student.
• Get a part-time job, start a side hustle, do freelance work.
• Host parties, gather the neighbors for cards/trivia/dominoes.
• Exercise, take care of your body and mind, join a gym.
Once you get an idea of WHAT, finding the HOW and WHERE is easy! Here are some ideas to get you into action and on your way to evolving into this new chapter:
• Go online and browse groups on Facebook, Meetup or WhatsApp.
• Find classes at the local library, Maker Playground or Fishers Art Center.
• Events of all kinds can be found on Facebook, Eventbrite and townepost.com.
• Online classes can be found through Ivy Tech, Udemy, Coursera, MasterClass, FutureLearn and many more!
No matter what chapter you might find yourself in, find inspiration and stay curious.
