calling, and what I felt like was my Godgiven purpose.”
Reginald Simmons originally planned on going to law school, but after many opportunities to work with young people, he felt he had a different calling.
It’s that drive and purpose that allowed Simmons, a veteran school administrator, to become Hamilton Southeastern (HSE) High School’s next principal. The HSE Board of School Trustees approved Simmons’ recommendation for the top job in June.
“I connected with students and they connected with me,” Simmons recalls. “In the 1990s I found myself intrigued but not convinced yet to join the educational field. But after getting the chance to continue working with young people through my church or the City of Indianapolis, I found myself in a place where this was more of a

Simmons says he is looking forward to making a difference for his students. “I’m ready to build a collaborative culture where students feel seen and known, teachers are supported, and families are excited about being a part of HSE High School,” Simmons says. “I have a passion for helping people in general, but have a particular interest in young people because of my own experience in high school,” Simmons says. “I always felt like I had a good education, but felt like I didn’t build a good relationship and rapport with the teachers, and so I always wanted to be that educator that would impact me.” Simmons moved to Fishers in July of 2000, and all four of his children are graduates of HSE schools. He says seeing his children succeed through their time in the HSE system has pushed him to be the best for future generations. “I want to have a relationship with my students because I didn’t get that opportunity,” he says. Simmons will replace Janie Ulmer, who was appointed earlier this year to serve as the assistant commissioner of the Indiana High School Athletic Association. He officially began the role on July 1. “I’ve always felt and still feel that HSE is a special place with a unique culture, and I’m blessed to be a part of it,” he says.

A FRESH TAKE ON MORNINGS MORNINGS BREAKFAST & BRUNCH OPENS IN FISHERS
Writer / Noah Alatza Photographer / Walker Photography
Mornings Breakfast & Brunch has expanded to Fishers. It’s their first northern Indianapolis location, and the new eatery officially opened in early June. The new restaurant is located on 116th Street near the I-69 interchange. When the owners started looking for their
next location to open, they felt Fishers made the most sense in terms of geography and the local economy. General Manager Marco Martinez says they had been contemplating opening a second location for some time, and the City of Fishers checked all of their boxes. “This is something that has been on our mind forever, and we had this opportunity 10 / AUGUST 2022 / TownePost.com
come up and we took it,” Martinez says. “We’re really looking forward to establishing ourselves at this new location.” Mornings focuses on a traditional American breakfast, but also incorporates a Latin American spin on the dishes. That spin is something Martinez says sets them apart from other local breakfast spots.
Martinez says they want to continue to grow Mornings across the Indianapolis metro area. As a family-run business, Martinez says the breakfast locations are unique because of the customer service and the familyfriendly atmosphere. He says they give back to the community as much as they can. “We support a lot of our community’s businesses by buying local,” Martinez says. “That’s everything from our meats to some of the smaller things that we can’t get from our big producers.” The Fishers location has already been a hit with locals and travelers alike. “So far there’s been great positive feedback and everyone is loving our food,” Martinez says. “We greatly appreciate the response from the public. It has truly been amazing.” Expansion of the popular spot is expected in the coming years according to Martinez. He says another location will likely be in the works on the south side of Indianapolis in the near future. For now, he says they are focused on continuing to build up their new Fishers spot. “The purpose at Mornings is not just to sell food, but to build a strong community and consume locally,” Martinez says. “We really take pride in being locally owned and operated, and providing the best experience for our customers.” Mornings Breakfast & Brunch is located at 8235 East 116th Street, Suite 245 in Fishers. them that were the same. In today’s day and age with everything being electronic, it’s nice to see that it’s really helping a lot in the city and in some places that kids might not necessarily have access to a library.”
Bill Reed, a retired math teacher, started maintaining the LFL outside of his house around three years ago, making sure to keep the library stocked and ready for those who came by. He says he knows how important reading can be in a kid’s life.
LFL locations are exactly what they sound like. Whether they are in front of a school or placed in a nearby neighborhood, they include a small collection of books that people can choose from, and either return or replace with a different book.
“I was talking to one mother whose daughter is only 2 years old, and she told me her daughter would scream to get a

“The LFL program is very simple - bring a book, take a book,” says Colleen Sommer, an LFL steward in east Carmel. “Unfortunately the book demand outweighs book donations, and many LFLs go empty for days or sometimes weeks if someone is not checking up on them regularly.”

Thankfully, that is where the steward program comes in.
“A steward is the person that takes care of the Little Free Library,” Reed says. “The steward is really the one that makes sure that there are no inappropriate books, or making sure there’s no trash or things like that in the library.” Clifford Bennett was also a part-time steward for the Carmel community. After tending to an LFL that hadn’t been cared for, he found more around the Carmel area that library volunteers were unable to maintain due to limited staffing. “There are a lot of LFLs in Hamilton County that are not getting a once-aweek visit to make sure it hasn’t been vandalized and hasn’t ran out of books,” Bennett says. He has been working on making sure LFLs are enjoyable for all who come to grab a book, and says it’s important that the library isn’t only clean, but also has a variety of books. “The best thing we can do to support reading growth in our community is to make sure there are beginning-reader books as well as early-reader books,” Bennett says. People can go online to get started with an LFL, and also donate and help keep the local LFL locations free of messes.

“Get involved,” Sommer says. “Like you, the LFL stewards are busy with their families and jobs. Most can’t make it to every location every day, so please consider bringing a couple books when you visit the parks. Feel free to tidy up the library box too. Maybe even consider volunteering as a steward for an LFL close to your home.” “To me it is the absolute best possible investment into the future generations,” Reed adds. “Kids that read are better at school, much more informed and all around better off.” You can learn more and find a library near you at littlefreelibrary.org.

Piece of Cake THERON BROOKS CHANNELS HER BAKING PASSIONS WITH CAKE JOY Writer / Renee Larr Photographer / Amy Payne TownePost.com / AUGUST 2022 / 17

rowing up in Indianapolis, Theron Brooks found great joy in cooking and baking, especially desserts. She would watch baking shows on Food Network and foster that love of baking. It always intrigued her, and baking was still in the back of her mind as her other aspirations grew.
She made cakes for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and friends’ birthdays in the following weeks. A friend from high school asked Brooks to make her daughter’s birthday cake, and offered to pay for it. She realized she had more than enough experience to open her own bakery. By December of 2020, Cake Joy was up and running.
In April of 2020, Brooks was supposed to go on a trip to celebrate her much-anticipated 30th birthday. Unfortunately the trip was canceled, along with her birthday cake. So, Brooks decided to take matters into her own hands and bake her own birthday cake.
Potential clients submit requests through Brooks’ website. She reaches out to discuss flavors, design and size to create a truly customized creation. Brooks, a Geist resident, has clients all around Indianapolis including Geist, Fishers and Carmel.
“I did my research, purchased all the tools and ingredients I would need, and got to work,” Brooks says. “I already had a love for baking, so I figured I could do it. I thought it turned out pretty well for the first time, so I posted it on my social media. I got so many comments saying I should do this more often.”
“One thing that separates Cake Joy is these are truly one-of-a-kind cakes and completely customizable,” Brooks says. “When someone reaches out to me inquiring about a cake, we work together to find inspiration. Sometimes they tell me they don’t care too much about the design and trust me to come up with something 18 / AUGUST 2022 / TownePost.com
beautiful, which is really fun.” She offers 14 different cake flavors, from classic favorites like vanilla and chocolate to lesser-known flavors like banana, coffee and piña colada. She also provides 14 different cake fillings including vanilla, chocolate, mocha, strawberry, lemon buttercream, caramel cream, apricot and more. “One of the first wedding cakes I made had a maple bacon filling,” Brooks says. “I actually put bacon in it. In my head I thought, ‘This wedding cake has pork in it,’ but it was very well-received. I’m all about trying out whatever the customer wants.” Brooks specializes in buttercream design using a Swiss meringue buttercream. It’s made by whipping egg whites with sugar to make a thick meringue, and then whipping in butter. This makes the buttercream extraordinarily light and fluffy.
Cakes vary in price based on size, ingredients and detail. Brooks says she leaves pricing open at a base price, depending on the degree of work the cake will take. In her short tenure, the producers of “The Good Dish” discovered Brooks and her custom cakes through her social media presence. She was approached to participate in their recurring segment, “The Great American Dish Off.” “They reached out to me to participate in a competition about sheet-pan desserts,” Brooks says. “It wasn’t specifically about cakes, but I thought it would be an awesome experience because it’s national television, great marketing for Cake Joy and a good experience in general.” Brooks submitted her recipe for her Bourbon Peach Cinnamon Crunch Bar. The episode was filmed in March and aired in April. She saw a boost in her online traffic almost immediately. The show aired at different times in different parts of the country, and she could see when viewers in those locales would watch the show based on website clicks. “My engagement grew around 200% within a day or a few hours of the episode airing, so that was really interesting to see,” Brooks
says. “I had people reaching out through Instagram, and even a few who reached out for the recipe showcased on ‘The Good Dish.’ ”
“I love this being more of a hobby than my full-time business,” Brooks says. “I love the flexibility of taking on cakes around what is going on with my family that particular weekend. Maybe I’ll change my mind in For now, Cake Joy is a passion project for five years and want a storefront, but I’m not Brooks. She currently works at a local law quite there yet. I am thrilled with where I’m firm as a communications manager. She’s at currently and how much Cake Joy has also a full-time wife to Courtney Brooks and grown since I started.” mom to Athen Brooks. ndianapolis Colts fans have known about Kenny Moore’s talent since the team signed the undrafted rookie out of Valdosta State University off of waivers in 2017. In 2021 the defensive back cemented his status as a star player, recording 101 tackles, a sack, four interceptions and a forced fumble. He was one of only two defensive backs to register 100 tackles and at least 10 passes defensed. The fans and the rest of the league took notice and Moore was selected to his first Pro Bowl.

Moore says during the season he’s focused on one thing - doing his job to the best of his ability. He says that as the season progresses, players start thinking more and more about the possibility of making the Pro Bowl.
Selection to the Pro Bowl hasn’t dampened Moore’s hunger to be the best. Every season is different, but Moore’s preparation is the same. “Proving myself first that I am who I say I am - I am who I believe I am,” he says. “It’s that worker’s mentality of being that Division II player, of being unknown, Moore has been involved in charity work unrecognized - just that hungry feeling. going all the way back to his days at Valdosta There’s a continuous chip on my shoulder State. “This is part of the reason why we play,” he says. “I mean, who wouldn’t want to be known as one of the best at their position? Yeah, we want to win a Super Bowl. Yeah, we want to win each week. But for us to do that, I have to play great.” Moore keeps an eye on all of the other defensive backs around the division, tracking their accomplishments, always working towards being the best defensive back in the American Football Conference (AFC). When Colts Head Coach Frank Reich read Moore’s name off the list of Pro Bowl selections, Moore flashed back to all the hard work, stress and preparation he had put himself through, from college to being an undrafted rookie, all the way through his professional career. The work Moore puts in to succeed on the field is matched by the work he puts in to help the community around him. Moore was nominated by the Colts for the 2021 Walter Payton Man of the Year award. During his time in Indianapolis, Moore has developed a love for racing. We figured this would be a great way to be able to fundraise a lot of money.”
The run starts at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater, and people can register to be a part of the 5K run or the one-mile wagon walk. “We’re going to have a lot of Riley kids at the event so that people can talk to them and share their stories,” Koley says. “Overall it’s just a good day fundraising for the children.”

Andy Brown has been installing Andersen windows since he was 15 years old.
Quality counts, but so does community. When you can get both quality and community wrapped into one experience, it’s the best of both worlds. That’s precisely what you get when you contact the team at Hometown Window & Door Company, certified professionals with more than 30 years of experience in working with Indiana homeowners. The four co-owners, Darren Peck, Dan Hanlin, Mitch Brown and Andy Brown, all bring a wealth of knowledge, experience, energy and commitment to the table.
Andy’s father, Mitch, also has a background rich with experience. For instance, he owns a number of Liberty Tax franchises. He also owns multiple Pure Barre fitness studios. As for windows and doors, he’s done pretty much everything you can imagine. He wanted to be a part of Hometown Window and Door Company to bring a better customer experience to the Indianapolis market than what is currently offered.
“He has installed tens of thousands of windows and was a top sales rep for Renewal by Andersen,” says Scott Dorrell, sales manager for Hometown Window and Door. “Now he’s part-owner and GM of the company.” 26 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2022 / TownePost.com
“He’s worked on the phones, he’s been a sales guy, he’s been an operations manager, he’s been an installation manager,” Dorrell says. As for Peck and Hanlin, they were high school friends who decided nearly 35 years ago to start a commercial cleaning company — an endeavor that over time morphed into Indiana Restoration & Cleaning Services,
a Hamilton County fixture for more than 30 years. Peck & Hanlin started Hometown Roofing Team in 2018 in response to their insurance agents — customers needing qualified and honest, ethical inspections of hail-damaged homes when unscrupulous, out-of-town companies come into town pressuring homeowners to sign contracts they’re unable to get out of. In February 2022, the four Hometown owners decided to purchase Clevernest, an Andersen window dealer located in Carmel. Becoming a dealer allowed them to offer more options at better prices and provide the consumer with a better customer service experience. The dealership-status enables the team to sell to new construction, product only, offer service to existing Andersen customers, and full-service whiteglove installation. After acquiring the Clevernest dealership, they renamed the company Hometown Window & Door Company to put an emphasis on the hometown feel. They provide a large selection of window styles, shapes and lines to coordinate with any type of home. Hometown Window & Door carries Andersen window and door products. Andersen Windows & Doors was incorporated in 1903 and is the oldest window and door company in the United States. They use only national, top-rated brands and offer a non-prorated and fullytransferable warranty on their windows and doors. The warranty is one of the best in the industry. “Andersen Window invented all kinds of firsts,” Dorrell says. “They invented doublepane glass. They invented the Perma-Shield process, and they invented Fibrex composite material. Andersen Window has just been huge innovators in the window and door industry. We have a really neat company history in the Andersen brand, and now we are able to bring it to market and give people a full-service, hometown experience.” To help celebrate community, they are offering Hamilton County residents a special hometown deal to commemorate the hometown brand acquiring the Clevernest brand. “THE GUYS WANTED TO DO SOMETHING SPECIAL FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY SO WE ARE GIVING 25% OFF TO ANYBODY WHO PURCHASES WINDOWS IN THE NEXT FEW MONTHS.” —SCOTT DORRELL
“The guys wanted to do something special for the people in the community so we are giving 25% off to anybody who purchases windows in the next few months,” Dorrell says. Peck, a lifetime resident in Hamilton County, has served on boards of Prevail, Noblesville Main Street, Fifty Club, & Harbour Trees. He has attended Noblesville First United Methodist Church for 50 years and married to Monica for 23. Hanlin and his wife Michelle, who have been married for 20 years, have been active members at Saint Maria Goretti Parish for 26-plus years. The pair are also members of the Bridgewater Gold Club. In addition, Hanlin serves the community as a volunteer pilot for Angel MedFlight, an organization that flies the sick and their families to hospitals for treatments.
Peck and Hanlin launched the Hometown Window Team in 2018 in response to the housing boom that occurred in the late 70s when a burst of homes were built with wood windows that 40 years later were beginning to fail. “There was also a need for quality replacement windows for homes built in the 70s and 80s. I saw outside companies coming in and giving high-pressure, highdollar sales efforts, which I find completely inappropriate,” Peck says. “We, on the other hand, are looking to just work in and around Hamilton County because we’re committed to offering a better, more competitive service for those homes that need updating, whether that be windows, roofing, or siding.” “Darren and I are committed to providing a quality customer experience — the same 28 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2022 / TownePost.com
commitment that we have operated the Restoration business by for the last 33-plus years,” Hanlin says. Peck and Hanlin are thrilled to partner with a company known for quality. Andersen’s windows and doors are unsurpassed for beauty, quality and value. There are fullframe wood and aluminum products but also the versatility of composite windows. They’re available for commercial as well as residential applications. “We look forward to installing Andersen products in Hamilton County,” Peck says. “Our concept is new in that in the residential replacement market we are offering people a full-service, white-glove installation with an Andersen dealer, all of the Andersen options, and the Andersen quality with certified master installers,”
Dorrell adds. “Generally, you don’t have dealers doing the installation, but our craftsmen are trained and experienced in estimating and installing windows of all types. When you sign a contract with Hometown, we handle everything. That includes consultation, listening to the homeowner, design, manufacturing, installation and the service.” Customers love it because they never have to deal with a third party as they always work directly with the Hometown Windows Team. “We are representing this national brand while providing a great hometown experience,” Dorrell says. Hometown Window and Door Company is located at 1710 S. 10th Street, Noblesville. Their main showroom is at 240 W. Carmel Drive. For more information, call 317-7732100 or visit hometownwindowteam.com.

The City of Fishers is kicking off its 150th anniversary this month and a special commemoration of the celebration will take place. Residents, business leaders, and City of Fishers officials are curating a time capsule to be placed in the keystone of the new Fishers Arts & Municipal Complex next year. This time capsule will be used to collect and house artifacts to document today’s history for Fishers residents to open in 2073. Scott Fadness, the Mayor of Fishers, gives his thoughts on the idea. “Special milestones, like the Sesquicentennial are important for our community to recognize, celebrate, and remember what has made our city the place it is today. I look forward to seeing what our past and current residents can bring together to memorialize our past for future generations.” Any Fishers resident interested in serving on the Time Capsule Selection Committee should contact Tom Britt at tom@townepost.com. Residents can submit their time capsule suggestions at townepost.com/time-capsule.
