dealing with dyslexia disorder was correctly diagnosed, a huge weight was lifted and the process of working through certain staggering elements of this disability was put in place. Today, I know that at least 20% of the population has dyslexia. This means that at least one of your friends, family members, or coworkers is currently dealing with dyslexia and its challenges. For almost a quarter of a century, the Dyslexia Institute of Indiana (DII) has existed to serve children, adolescents, and adults with specific learning disabilities. Beginning with the student at the center, DII serves elements of the community that touch the life of the student. DII provides skills, services, and strategies that enable individuals to attain their full potential by learning to manage the challenges of dyslexia and benefit from its advantages.
As a person who has dyslexia, I can share that it has affected my life in many subtle ways. As a child with what today has been identified as a mild level of dyslexia, there were many issues that were difficult for me in the learning process. I knew I was capable, but some simple tasks were overly complicated for reasons I did not understand at that time in my life, as the word “dyslexia” had not been entered into the diagnostic world of learning disabilities. Math was hard and complicated. Transposing numbers and memorizing formulas was overwhelming. Studying another language was difficult, and sounding out unfamiliar words didn’t work for me as, at that time, I didn’t have the learning tools to work through the sounds and pronunciation necessary to master this task. If I heard it pronounced correctly, I had to memorize the sound and repeat it out loud over and over again. Although my grades were usually in the A’s and B’s, my timed test scores did not match my ability to show that I, indeed, knew the subject. It took me longer to whip through a 30-minute paper test than the other kids. I have to admit, in those early days before dyslexia had a name, I always felt that in certain subjects I simply could not compete with other kids. Years later, when the connection to this learning
The term dyslexia refers to a cluster of systems that result in people having difficulty with specific language skills, particularly reading, spelling, written expression, and pronouncing words. Other problems experienced by individuals with dyslexia include: • Learning to speak • Organizing written and spoken language • Learning letters and their sounds • Memorizing number facts • Spelling • Reading • Learning a foreign language • Correctly doing math operations It’s important to note that not all individuals who exhibit these systems are dyslexic. Formal testing is the only way to confirm a diagnosis of suspected dyslexia. The following information serves as a guideline for recognizing systems that might be related to this learning disability. Signs of dyslexia in young, preschool children include talking later than expected, a slowness to add new words, difficulty rhyming, and trouble following multistep directions. After a child begins school, the signs of dyslexia include:
Beyond academic success, DII promises each student the ability to minimize fear, develop confidence, and celebrate success. Dyslexia does not just affect performance in school or the workplace – it can hinder self esteem, social skills, and the ability to reach one’s true potential. 8

Many years ago when I was a child, I couldn’t exactly explain why I had trouble with certain elements of learning. Today with the wonderful research and commitment of DII, children have the tools for learning and accomplishing tasks that were beyond my time. What a blessing this is!
Camp Delafield is a four-week summer reading and enrichment program for children ages 7-12. It combines a rigorous academic agenda with diverse arts and recreational activities to increase learning opportunities and strengthen organization and gross and fine motor skills. Using a wholechild approach, Camp Delafield focuses on improving participants’ academic skills, self-esteem, and social skills. PAID PAID Indianapolis,IN
Having one of these signs does not mean your child has dyslexia; many children reverse letters before the age of 7. But, if several signs exist and reading problems persist, or if you have a family history of dyslexia, you may want to have your child evaluated. The earlier a parent sees what might be a presenting problem with their child’s learning ability, the better.
Wells Tutoring provides one-on-one multisensory instructional services to children and adults with dyslexia. Through this program, students increase their knowledge and understanding of phonics and spelling, improve their study skills, and – most rewarding – improve their ability to read independently. Testing is comprised of a complete educational evaluation consisting of a comprehensive battery of standardized tests and takes approximately 4 hours. Testing at DII helps individuals to understand their learning strengths and needs and is done by a Certified School Psychologist.

to the mother had been doing fine in math. Recently, the mother started to notice a reversal in her math grades. A diagnostic test revealed that she was actually well below grade level in all math domains. The child had been going through the motions of computation but was not actually learning and understanding the relationship of numbers to everyday life. Her teachers at school had thought it was due to not paying attention. They were right, but their reasoning was wrong. The child had simply grown tired of doing math sheets for no apparent reason.
j&R Tutoring: Taking Action | Laurie Quinn Raise of hands here – Who has sat down with a friend and talked about opening a bar? Come on! I know many men who have done this in our back yard! How many of us have chatted over coffee about starting our own coffee shop with scrumptious pastries as a side? How many of us actually took our dream and made it a reality? I met a couple gals who did just that. Over months of lunches, two long-time friends repeatedly discussed their concerns for the future of our children. Meet Renée Pugh-Smith and Jackie Garrett. They were able to take these long lunch conversations and concerns and turn them into a reality. Instead of griping about the future of our children, they decided to become the solution. They developed the concept of j&R Tutoring. They took pains to hire instructors who have years of classroom experience; they are parents and grandparents. They all have Masters of Arts degrees in Education, and they all have current background checks on file. When speaking to Renée, one story grabbed me by the heart. One student had been struggling with reading, but according
j&R Tutoring discovered that the child liked to bake. So they worked with the mother and found an age-appropriate cook book. Using recipes, she learned to divide and multiply them and, most importantly, she learned how numbers help with everyday life. This activity gave a concrete reason for learning them. By connecting the computation to a real life situation, the child was able to see why learning math is important and fun. Being a mom of two small children, I have concerns about the future for my children. It makes the world seem a little brighter knowing there are people in this world who not only value our children and their futures, but can put a plan into action to make life a little easier for us all. Homework time can be stressful in many homes. Just remember you are not alone. There are people out there who care and can help! Their motto: They want kids to think, “Is today the day I GET to go to tutoring?” Not, “Is today the day I HAVE to go to tutoring?” To find out more information about j&R Tutoring, call 317-849-4182 or visit www.jnrtutoring.com. unlocking cell phones | Sean Mulroy
Instead of just randomly picking a technology topic to talk about this month, I thought I would dip into the mailbag and answer a question I have seen more than once. If this works, we’ll try to do it again; if it doesn’t…well, we will deal with that later. : I’ve been hearing about “unlocking” cell phones a lot lately. What does this mean and should I be worried about it? – Steve W. in Fishers
Q
: Great questions, Steve. There’s actually a long and boring explanation behind the surge in news stories that involves the Library of Congress of all things, but the gist of it has to do with how wireless carriers built their networks and how they price phones to their customers. First, let’s take a look at how carriers in the US have traditionally priced their handsets to consumers.
A
US consumers have long been conditioned to expect a phone to be “free” and the rise of the smartphone in the last 5 years has led to the addition of the $100 or $200 phone to the conventional wisdom as well. All of this pricing is “after 2 year contract” however and this is where the roadblocks to unlocking begins. The $200 smartphone you are walking around with carries a “real” price tag of $500 or more. Carriers tying you into a contract isn’t just a way to keep you as a paying customer, it’s also a way to recoup the investment they are making when they buy down the cost of the phone. Locking the phone to their network is just a further means of ensuring they don’t lose out on that money. In a world where carriers are forced to unlocked phones, we can all expect to pay more upfront. This might not be all bad
though, as it likely means the end of contracts as well – or at least the end of them as they are currently structured. The larger issue with unlocking though, has to do with technology upon which carrier networks are built. In the US, there are two main technologies used for wireless voice communications; CDMA and GSM (as you might guess, these are both acronyms that don’t mean much in everyday life). Verizon and Sprint use CDMA while AT&T and T-Mobile use GSM. This should mean that Verizon and Sprint phones would be interchangeable while AT&T and T-Mobile users should be able to swap devices as well, right? Not so fast, unfortunately. While the voice communications side isn’t a big problem here, the roadblocks really arise when we start to look at data technology and wireless spectrum. Without going to far into the weeds, different carriers have licenses to operate at different frequency bands – and the majority of today’s phones are built to take advantage of only a few of these bands, limiting your ability to freely move from carrier to carrier without switching phones at the same time. Technology always has a way of catching up, but the reality is that we are still a few years away from being able to move from carrier to carrier without having to worry about getting a new phone every time we do so. Silver Anniversary Coach Dave Cook | Mark Morrow . Photos | Hamilton County Sports Daily
David Cook never played fast pitch softball. He played baseball. He did help coach a girls traveling softball team in Pendleton. Two of the girls on that team had a lot to do with Cook becoming a varsity softball coach. They helped plant the seed, so to speak. They told him that there would be an opening at HSE. He said he really hadn’t thought about coaching high school softball until they mentioned such a possibility. “I’ve truly enjoyed coaching girls softball, and I really thought that the sport was close to really taking off,” he said. “Back then, there was only the ASA (American Softball Association), but the sport exploded statewide (it’s been under the IHSAA umbrella since 1985). When I decided to apply at HSE, winning a state championship never entered my mind, or that maybe it could happen at Southeastern. I so enjoyed coaching and working with the girls, and I was just happy to have a chance to coach at Southeastern.” Cook enters his Silver Anniversary season coaching the Lady Royals this spring. He’s already a legend. He’s won two state championships (2007 and 2010), something no other coach in Hamilton County has accomplished, and he needs only 21 victories to reach the 500-win milestone. Not only is he likely to get No. 500 this season, you can’t help but wonder when the school’s softball diamond will be named after David Cook. Cook also has come a long way in the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association, where he is an active member. He’s a regular voter on the Top 15 Voting Panel for Region 3 and a member of the Hall of Fame Selection Committee. “A lot of memories?” Cook was asked. “Yes, many,” said Cook, a graduate of Pendleton Heights High School who earned a Physical Education degree from Ball State. “I’m blessed. I have great kids, strong parent involvement, tremendous facilities here, and a very supportive administration. “And as far as coaching and winning, the fire still burns. I look forward to every season. This is what I do, what I love. I never have any thoughts of retirement. Winning never gets old, and helping prepare these kids for when they leave high school is important. I’m not just talking about whether they excel at the next level in softball; I mean helping them prepare, excel in life is what really is important.” When he talks about his team, coaches, and everyone involved, he likes to think of it as one big family. He said that parents host some dinners during the season, and that the girls will go to breakfast as a team on occasion.

“We go to breakfast every prom, for sure. They love it. They need to do and think about something other than softball on that day. Certainly we don’t practice on prom day. You know, the girls need to do their nails and hair and get ready for their big night,” he said with a chuckle.
3/26/2013 2:31:36 PM
But getting back to his Silver Anniversary moment or season, here’s what Noblesville’s Mike Ramsey said about Cook: “Dave is a great competitor! I absolutely enjoy playing his teams as they are always well prepared and, year in year out, among the best in the state. Twenty-five years is a long time to do anything. The impact Dave has had on our sport and all the young lives he has mentored is really overwhelming. I think if there were a template for what a Hall of Fame coach looks like in any sport, Dave represents it. He has been as successful as any fast pitch coach in Indiana history in the win-loss column and holds 2 state championship titles. If his actions ended there, the story would be very impressive; but I don’t think many people realize how active coach Cook is behind the scenes as an advocate for his girls and our sport.” Cook just smiles and shrugs his shoulders whenever Hall of Fame talk is mentioned. He’s not there yet, but he will be. His teams have won 20 or more games the past six years. The Lady Royals were 25-5 last year. He could also go over 500 career victories this season. He ranks fifth on the all-time list with 479 wins; he’s lost 178. He needs 1 more set championship to move into a second-place tie with New Palestine’s Ed Marcum. “Not a goal – not something I spend time thinking about,” he said matter of factly about the Hall of Fame. “I don’t know what the criteria is, but I’m guessing you have to be nominated.” One of Cook’s goals, though, is to keep on winning and doing
things the right way when it comes to teaching, preparing, and leading his Lady Royals. Said Center Grove’s Russ Milligan, a four-time state champion whose 590-74 won-loss record ranks atop the state coaching list: “Dave is a great coach and always has his girls well prepared. His love for the game and his love and commitment to the girls he coaches is evident in both his accomplishments and in his demeanor on the diamond.” Cook is also the only coach to produce an unbeaten season en route to a state title when the tournament was single class, and now that feat still stands in Class 4A of Class Softball. His 2007 team, led by Miss Softball Morgan Melloh, went 31-0.

“Would we love to win another one this season? Yeah, that would be awesome,” he said. “But getting out of our sectional is not easy. This is just really a difficult sectional. That’s the first and most important. After that, we’d like to think the rest of the way might not always be as a difficult. Our conference (Hoosier Crossroads) and sectional, we feel, really does prepare you to advance in the state tournament.”
“... as far as coaching and winning, the fire still burns. I look forward to every season. This is what I do, what I love. I never have any thoughts of retirement. Winning never gets old, and helping prepare these kids for when they leave high school is important. I’m not just talking about whether they excel at the next level in softball; I mean helping them prepare, excel in life is what really is important.”
As far as the sectional goes, certainly Carmel, Noblesville, and Fishers, in particular, have been formidable foes; and Zionsville and Westfield should be stronger this season. Cook’s Lady Royals beat then-No. 1 Noblesville two years ago in the sectional, then lost to Fishers in a semifinal game, and Carmel went on to win state. Last year, the Lady Royals went extra innings, losing to Carmel 1-0 in 8 innings in the sectional final. “Like I said, nothing easy about our sectional,” he motioned with his hands while shaking his head with a sigh. This year’s team could be very good. All three pitchers return in seniors Alyssa Buchanan and Amanda Winthrow and sophomore Maggie Armstrong, who’s coming off a tremendous freshman season where she posted a 2.08 ERA. She also plays shortstop. Winthrow was sort of thrown into the fire last year when Buchanan could not play because of elbow surgery in the offseason. Winthrow responded brilliantly by recording 150 strikeouts. Buchanan also pitched extremely well on the 2010 state championship team. Catching those three is Roni Patterson, a hard-nosed competitor with good speed and a strong arm who is a power-hitting lead-off batter. “Our pitchers are good, very good. I won’t say they are the best, but I can’t believe there’s any team with three pitchers any better,” Cook said. His competitive nature takes over off the field once in awhile

when talking about the sport he loves – especially when he sees teams or hears of a team pop up on the internet that he might know nothing about yet that seems to have all these great statistics (oft times unrealistic numbers). “I’m not saying we can beat them; but if they’re that good, come on. I want to play them, and we’ll see what happens,” he said with a slight grin. Cook’s conversation always comes back to his girls. “My assistants might say I’ve softened up over the years, but there’s still a lot of discipline in our program. At the same time kids need to have fun, and they need to know you are there for them and that you’ll always be there for them,” Cook said. “Like I said, we’re trying to create a family atmosphere. As important as winning is, well, it’s not all about winning. We have a lot of smart, really smart, ladies. They have high GPA’s, some even over 4.0. We play a lot of games in a very short time, and it’s important that we provide balance in their daily schedules. That could mean ending practice early on occasion to give them time to hit the books. I can’t stress enough how important grades are.” Assistant Coach Alison Strole said, “Back in the ‘90s when I played for him, his nickname was Mad Bear. Back then, he was very vocal, but it was also the way to motivate athletes. If he would yell at me, it got me fired up and I would pitch the ball harder. Now my nickname for him is Teddy Bear. It’s our running joke. I keep telling him he has become a big softy. However, though his coaching style may have changed over the
years, one thing that has not changed is his passion for the game and his dedication to his players. He goes above and beyond to help kids who want to play at the next level get there. He then makes sure that he goes and sees them. I still remember when we (IU) were playing at Arizona in a tourney and my parents weren’t able to make the trip. I looked up in the stands and there was Coach Cook. It meant the world to me. I also think it says a lot that most of his coaching staff over the years are former players like myself who, after playing college ball, want to come back to the program. It is truly one big family!” Asked how he would like to be remembered when his coaching days end, Cook leaned back in his chair, folded his arms, and paused a moment as if he was in deep thought. “That I’ve always been for our girls – and we’ve had some great ones come through this program as athletes and just really fine people,” he said. “And that I want those involved with our program to like what we’ve done and to know we’ve always tried to do things the right way.” OK, coach, enjoy your Silver Anniversary season. Wishes Dance Studio | Matt Quinn As the parent of two young children, I have a simple wish that they both are happy and turn out to be positive members of the community. The importance of positive experiences outside of home and school is critical in making this wish a reality. Structured programs that teach skills and simultaneously improve self esteem and confidence in our children are quite valuable. When these programs are led by role models that mirror our beliefs and actions, it can become pretty powerful. We, as parents, are willing to spend money on this type of investment in our child’s development. Let me introduce one of these organizations…Wishes Dance Studio. What began as a single program at the Fishers YMCA has evolved into one of the best youth programs in Fishers. The process began in 2002 when Kelley Richards approached the Fishers YMCA and inquired about starting dance classes. Classes began in 2003 and steadily grew through 2006 until a designated location could not only be supported but was 20
fishers c o m m u n i t y

necessitated. Wishes Dance Studio has since recently relocated to its new home at 12810 Ford Drive. The move was initiated by the sheer growth of the program and, quite frankly, a need for more parking that could not be accommodated by the former location. The amount of participants and the loyalty to the program are astounding, but not the least bit surprising. Wishes’ new 8,000-square-foot studio is centrally located in Fishers (behind Don Hind’s Ford) and is decorated in a Parisinspired theme. There are 3 distinct dance studios, each with their own personality, designed to accommodate the various aspects of the business. There is also a “dressing room” upstairs which serves as a space where children over the age of 8 can do homework, relax, or socialize between classes. Ample lobby space for the parents is a welcomed addition, while an enhanced website and registration process are currently in development and expected to launch in 2013. As nice as the new space shows, what really sets this business apart are the people that teach the classes. The instructors

are led by Kelley Richards, a former professional singer and dancer and current small business owner. Kelley has transformed her passion for dance into a well-balanced business catering to a variety of dance levels ranging from beginner (recreational classes begin as young as 18 months old with parent participation) to elite. As is the case with many small businesses, Kelley’s family is intimately involved in its success. Her husband, Jeff, has supported this vision emotionally and literally as he built all the dance floors, cubbies, and shelves. Her 18-year-old son, Colton, serves as the office manager and webmaster while her 15-year-old daughter, Ciara (an impressive dancer in her own right), serves as an instructor. Kelley is quick to praise the teachers that are part of the program. “I am extremely fortunate to be joined by talented instructors who love dance and do an extremely good job of relating to children.” A testament to the loyalty that exists in her organization is one of her current teachers named Emily. Emily is a long-time loyal student who literally grew up inside the program since 2003 and is currently a senior. She is now teaching classes at a satellite location and doing a tremendous job. At the core of Kelley’s business are two types of classes that are labeled on her website as recital classes and non-recital classes. Recital classes cater to the more serious dancer who has demonstrated a commitment to the art and visits the studio 2-3 times per week. These classes focus on the fundamentals of dancing and teach through repetition and practice. These classes culminate in a recital that takes place in April every year. The program has grown so large that 3 individual recitals are required. All of them take place on the same day at the Paramount Theater in Anderson, Indiana. All the girls perform in various roles throughout this performance, demonstrating the skills they have acquired throughout the months of practice. The seniors are highlighted and have earned an opportunity to pick their own costume and music and to choreograph their own solo dance which is preceded by a video montage. It makes for a very special evening for the students, teachers, and families. I would be remiss not to mention Kelley’s most mature student in her 90’s that performed a ballroom piece at the recital this past year. Non-recital classes are typically more recreational in nature and provide an entry experience into dance in a fun and positive atmosphere. What distinguishes this programming from the competition is engagement of the children into the activities. You will see strategic, yet subtle, actions like locating parents outside the classroom after the first day of class. This allows the child to begin socializing with the teacher and classmates on their own terms. Parents are treated to a small show the last day of these 6-week sessions where the kids demonstrate everything they have learned. Every class includes time allotted for the teacher to interact with each student by asking them a specific question. The result is an established relationship between teacher and student that is unique to each participant. The curriculum is
designed to engage the children by using their imagination. You will see instructors dressed up like Belle or Tinker Bell who encourage the same type of dress from the participants. You will hear music from popular kid movies in addition to some alternative songs that you might find yourself singing on the car ride home after the show. All this is taking place in addition to the girls learning proper form and dance terminology. In addition to the core business, Kelley has expanded some of the offerings to include birthday parties, summer camps, and even girlsnight-out burlesque parties (for the parents of the dancers). Two recent brainstorms and programs in development include putting on two big events every year. The first is a Cinderella Ball that will include the entire “Royal Family” of the dancers and is projected to include horse and carriage rides in addition to a footman who will patiently try a slipper onto each girl’s foot, reminiscent of the fairy tale. October will host a Haunted Dance Studio and include a masquerade ball and trick or treating. Parents who have experienced any of these programs for their children have fueled the growth. Kelley admits that besides her website, she has made minimal investments in marketing. “Word of Mom” is a very powerful tool that has almost single-handedly increased awareness. If you would like to find out more information regarding Wishes Dance Studio, you can visit their website at wishesdance.com or call the studio at 317-435-2541. You can also witness the Parisinspired decorations by visiting the studio at 12810 Ford Drive, Fishers, Indiana 46038. Not only am I the author of this article, but I am writing this from the perspective of a dad whose daughter has flourished in the non-recital programs and asks us on more than one occasion when she can take the next session of dance. I am one of hundreds of parents trying to make my wish of developing two well-rounded kids come true through the well-balanced business of Wishes Dance Studio. I guess we can call that “Word of Dad,” although it doesn’t quite have the same ring. Matt Quinn moved to Fishers in 2008 along with his wife and two children. Based on the family friendly lifestyle they determined that Fishers would be their permanent home. Matt graduated from Miami of Ohio and Xavier University and has grown multiple small businesses. april 2013

would you like to buy a time machine? | Clark A. Edwards
Naples, Florida.
Some people sell cars, some sell widgets, and some sell carpet. I know a man who sells time machines.
First Wing has a fleet of aircraft, and each has its own specific mission depending on number of passengers and distance traveled:
Oh I know what you’re thinking: “I’ll take one, and I am setting the date in the past to coincide with Senior Prom night.” Or better yet, “I’ll manipulate time so I know what the winning lottery numbers are for the next drawing.” Sorry to disappoint you, but it is not that type of time machine. This time machine provides you more time and a better quality of life. This time machine comes in the form of private air travel. If you are interested in this type of time machine, you should meet Doug Foley. Doug works for First Wing, a division of Eagle Creek Aviation Services. Eagle Creek Aviation Services, located on the west side of town off I-465 and 38th Street, is owned by Matt and Cathy Hagans. Besides the Indianapolis location, they also own and operate Naples Jet Center based in

get a sense of his passion for helping people get from Point A to Point B in a much more efficient manner. Now if you’re like me, I thought immediately that this form of travel was something I could not afford. After talking to Doug, I realized it is not out of the question at all.
Phenom 100 (Jet) – Classified as a “very light jet”. Newer aircraft, largest cabin in its class, fastest in its class, yet economical. Great for short to midrange trips, seats 4.
Let’s look at some of the benefits of private air travel. How would you like to skip arriving 2 hours prior to departure time and avoid the ticket, baggage, and security lines and instead arrive at the airport 15 minutes prior to departure? This is the way it works when traveling with Foley. If you have a prior meeting that runs long, you simply call the pilot and tell him/ her your schedule is pushed back an hour. The plane leaves when you and your party arrive. Another tremendous benefit is the capability to fly into one of 5000 public airports across the country, putting you closer to your meeting destination and saving your extra driving time.
When talking to Doug, you quickly

flying their employees and clients via private aircraft, it’s really because they value their employees’ and clients’ time,” says Foley. Employees can be home in time for dinner and other family funtions. On an average day trip flying commercial out of Indianapolis, travelers can anticipate a 20-hour day when factoring in the time they wake to get to the airport until the time they arrive home. This is not speculation; I have personally lived this many times in my own business travel. For example, if you had to fly to Nashville,
Tennessee, your total flight time is OVER 7 hours. Since there are no direct flights to Nashville, you also have 1 stop on each leg of your trip. When you consider that the FAA suggests arriving at the airport 2 hours in advance of your departure, you’ve now added an extra 4 hours of nonproductive time to your day. With private air travel, your total flight time is just over 2 hours. Instead of arriving 2 hours prior to departure, you can show up at Eagle Creek and your plane departs within 15 minutes. So, flying commercial takes a total of 11 hours out of your day versus 2-½ hours by chartering a private plane. Also, your commercial trip means you’ll probably have to spend the night in Nashville. Flying private gets you home in time for the more important things in life saving you time, hassle, and energy. Doug can help you with a few different options for private air travel. He will give you an idea if this will work within your company’s plans and budgets. When private air travel becomes an integral part of your travel, then you (or your company) can consider purchasing a plane either outright or fractionally. Fractional ownership allows you to purchase a percentage of an aircraft, and the costs of ownership are spread out among the other owners. First Wing manages all the operations
for you – maintenance, scheduling pilots, booking trips, and setting itineraries. They can also reserve car rentals, limousine service, and hotel accommodations if necessary. The biggest advantage to both Fractional and 100% ownership are the tax advantages you get with depreciation. If you can’t use the tax advantages, then check into their Fleet Cards and Charter program. If you ask Doug, he will tell you what he and First Wing do best is a Business Shuttle – last-minute, same-day trips or 1-2 overnights that require 2 to 7 people traveling out of town for meetings. Keep in mind, though, if you want to take 3 or 4 couples to Vegas or the Caymans for a weekend getaway, they can certainly do that, too. So while originally you may have been thinking hot tub time machine and manipulating time, I believe Doug can certainly affect your amount of time spent traveling and relieve the stress and aggravation of doing so. Contact Doug Foley at 317-241-3302 or email him at dfoley@firstwing.com for information on these realistic time machines. Clark A. Edwards is National Portfolio Manager for TransFirst, LLC. He was born and raised in Irvington and is a Graduate of Indiana University. He is a 20 year resident of Fishers where he resides wih his wife and two young sons. A Night of Magical Moments | Laurie Quinn Once upon a time, in the not-so-distant land of Noblesville, Indiana, lived a beautiful girl named Megan. This beautiful girl grew up and attended Noblesville High School. She dreamed of becoming a teacher; by attending Indiana University, she made this dream come true. She began her teaching career at Hazel Dell Elementary in Noblesville. While teaching, she met a boy and they got married. Though Megan loved teaching, after giving birth to her first child, she decided to become a full-time stay-at-home mom. I wish I could say this story had a happy ending, but it doesn’t. On July 14, 2008, Megan was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was 32 years old and 32 weeks pregnant with her second daughter. At 35 weeks, Megan gave birth to a beautiful daughter. With all the love and support of her family, she began her fight against breast cancer. Megan lived in Fishers with her husband and children. She was a social person who enjoyed being with friends and family. I always saw her talking and laughing with someone at school. She was also a positive person. She was positive from the beginning that she was going to beat this disease, but one complication after another set back her progress. She spent her final days planning and preparing for her family, friends, and fellow survivors. One month before she passed away, Megan and her husband, Tom, founded the Megan S. Ott Foundation because they knew the emotional and physical anguish of fighting breast cancer. This foundation was envisioned as a way for families to cope while fighting for their lives or their loved ones’ lives. Megan lost her battle to breast cancer on April 24, 2010. This foundation is her legacy to those who love her. The Megan S. Ott Foundation has two major fund raisers. The one I am going to highlight in this piece is called A Night of Magical Moments. This year will be the 3rd Annual Night of Magical Moments, and it will be held on Saturday, May 11, in the SAHMS Atrium at One America Tower in downtown Indianapolis. The evening will include hors d’oeuvres, dinner, and cocktails throughout the night. Entertainment will be provided by Dave & Rae, and there will be amazing auction items on which to bid. There are a
few levels of sponsorship in which one can participate, but the regular tickets are $75 per person. You can go as a group or as an individual. Deadline for an RSVP is April 26. I went last year for the first time. From start to finish, it was an amazing event. Megan would be so proud to know her foundation has helped so many people. The food was fantastic. The drinks were all included in the price of the ticket. The presentation about Megan and the foundation was priceless. The whole evening was a success. I found out that the foundation raised $85,000 to help other survivors during their fight for survival. To date, the Megan S. Ott Foundation has helped over 130 families. My memories of Megan come from seeing her at preschool. She wasn’t one to ask for help, but one particular day she needed it. I saw her struggling to get the drinks and snacks she was providing for the kids in her daughter’s class into the school while getting her daughter safely across the parking lot. I went up and asked how I could help. I had already dropped my daughter off inside. She told me to grab her daughter’s hand to see her safely to the other side and on the sidewalk. I told her I would take the snacks as it was her job to hold her daughter’s hand and see her safely to her destination. She started to protest but stopped and handed me the snacks. Then she walked her daughter safely inside the school. Even now, though she isn’t physically here with us, she is still seeing that breast cancer survivors safely reach their destination through this foundation. For more information on the foundation or the Night of Magical Moments, go to megansottfoundation.org. Laurie Quinn is the publisher of Fishers Community Newsletter. She enjoys being outside whenever possible whether it is biking, hiking or pushing her kids on the swings.

Just Say No to Vacation Weight Gain
Vacation Weight Management Tips by Laurie Seland, Weight Loss Coach, Seland Chiropractic Living Well Center, PC How many of us have planned to lose weight for a vacation or a trip coming up? We focus, diet, and drop weight. We are so proud of ourselves. We fit into and look good in that new bathing suit. Then, while we are on vacation, we gain five pounds! I propose we rethink “gaining weight on vacation is acceptable.” Instead, go on vacation with this thought: “I am going to have an amazing time, enjoy myself, and maintain my weight!” I would like to suggest the following ideas so that you can enjoy yourself while on vacation.

Have you chosen a preschool yet for this coming fall? Were you aware that numerous preschools already have a wait list for new attendees? When sifting through the names of all the programs offered in Fishers, do you wonder “how do I pick one?” We mostly know the rules for choosing a preschool for our child such as looking for student/teacher ratio, cleanliness, and those sorts of situations. However, are you aware that there are several different formats of preschools? These varying formats are great, as it seems there is a school to meet most everyone’s needs. The first school that I will mention is located at 12550 Brooks School Road in Fishers, Indiana, on the corner of Brooks School Road and 126th Street. Come take a tour of New Hope Presbyterian Preschool and Parents Day Out (PDO). This school offers a program that you can build on so it meets your needs as they change. It offers a PDO program for ages 15-23 months once a week from 9:15-1:15. The parent brings the child’s lunch, and the child learns to play and interact with others while the parent can go enjoy some down time by running errands or having a cup of coffee with a friend. The child does not have to be potty trained for this program. This school also offers a preschool program for ages 2-preK. Your child does not need to be potty trained for the 2s class but does for any higher classes. A unique feature of this school is it offers both morning and afternoon 36

classes for your child. Each class is 2.5 hours long (9:15-11:45 and 12:30-3:00) with the option to extend the day with Lunch Bunch, where your child eats in a staffed room with other children. Once in the 3s and up programs, you can add to your child’s day by picking an enrichment class for your child to attend. This is a very budget-friendly way to pick and choose your child’s learning path and work around naps – if you should be so lucky to have a child that still naps! If you would like more information on New Hope, contact Karen Sutcliffe at 317-5988485 or go to newhopefishers.org and click on the preschool tab on the site.
Geist Christian Preschool
Next up is a preschool called Geist Christian Preschool. This school has two campuses. The north campus is located at 12756 Promise Road (where Promise Road meets 126th Street), and the south campus is located at 8550 Mudcreek Road in Indianapolis, Indiana. They offer a Child’s Day Out program for ages 18 months-3 years. ew r N hip! e d s Un ner Ow

This can be chosen as a once-a-week or a twice-a-week program. Your child does not need to be potty trained for this program. This preschool offers a preschool-preK program for children ages 3-5 years. The child must be potty trained for these
levels of the program. The hours for this program are set from 9:30-1:30. You choose if you send your child two or three times a week. Also offered at this school are beforehours care and after-hours care which could come in handy at times. For more information on this preschool, call 317-5784591. The last preschool I will highlight is a co-op school. Fishers Pointe Cooperative Preschool is located at 1399 Greenfield Avenue, Noblesville, Indiana, and is inside the Noblesville First Church of the Nazarene. Yes, I know their address is Noblesville, but they are very close to Fishers; and the format is so unique that I had to highlight it. A co-op school offers a more gradual transition from home to school as the parents are involved in the child’s school experience. Families are assigned jobs to keep the school operating
efficiently. However, a parent’s main responsibility is to help in the classroom a couple times a month. This is a great option for parents who want to be actively involved in their children’s learning. Your assigned job could be working on the board of directors to making play-doh. Classes are offered Monday through Friday mornings. For more information, call and leave a message at 317-721-3727 or log onto fisherspointecoop.org and read about how the school can help you or your little one adjust to separation. I highlighted three very different preschools. Although they differ, they believe our children’s education is important. For a more thorough list of preschools in the area, go to the Fishers Community Newsletter Facebook page, www.facebook.com/atFishers, and look under the notes section. If there is a school you would like to add, please private message the Fishers Community Newsletter and it will be added.

Gaining Confidence by Losing Inches | Beth Taylor
Have a Better Spring.
As swimsuits gain prime retail space once again, thoughts turn to warmer weather. If you’ve kept your New Year’s resolution to work out but aren’t seeing the results you’d like, consider looking into the latest non-invasive targeted weight-reduction methods. The latest procedures make losing the love handles without pain possible. The SimplySkin Med Spa offers CoolSculpting, a revolutionary nonsurgical body contouring treatment that delivers results. A certified CoolSculpting esthetician uses cooling plates to freeze and crystallize fat cells. Your body permanently eliminates the fat cells. “Clients can achieve a pants-size loss and are excited to get their closets back,” said Amanda Voss, office manager at SimplySkin Med Spa. Unlike surgical methods, CoolSculpting achieves results without pain or downtime. During the procedure, clients feel an initial cold sensation that soon dissipates. The ideal candidate for this procedure maintains a healthy weight but struggles with stubborn bulges that can’t be eliminated through diet and exercise. Most clients can expect to see results within a couple weeks. “Clients get a wow month about 2 months after the initial procedure,” Voss said. An onstaff doctor determines if a patient is a candidate for CoolSculpting.
It may be cold now, but spring will be here soon. Whether you are planning to travel, go hiking and biking, or just play with your kids this spring, do it without leg pain. Call today and get on the road to better health. We specialize in the treatment of Varicose Veins, Spider Veins and Venous Ulcers.

In addition to CoolSculpting, the state-ofthe-art Medical Spa provides Liposonix, another targeted fat-reduction treatment. This treatment option uses high-intensity ultrasound to heat and permanently destroy targeted fat cells. Skin and tissue are unharmed. Liposonix can be used on the love handles and waistline as well as on small or curved areas. “Liposonix is really energy sculpting,” said Dr. Marcus Jiminez. “We use it to target smaller areas, often working its use into an overall aesthetic treatment plan with other options.”
7e Fit Spa Torc Treatment Abs session
Liposonix treatments cause minimal discomfort, and patients experience little to no downtime after the treatment. “We see excellent results with this procedure, and it usually takes only one time,” he said. Patients can expect to see a result 8 to 10 weeks after the Liposonix treatment, and the average reduction is around an inch (or pant size) from the waistline. Losing inches while gaining definition and strength has never been so easy. At 7e Fit Spa, the 7e Torc Treatment Abs sessions use a device that mimics the body’s natural

bio-electricity to work out abdominal muscles more effectively than a traditional workout. “The device contracts the muscles on a cellular level — that’s why it’s so effective,” said CEO of 7e Fit Spa, Steve Nielsen. Clients can see results after the first 30-minute session, but 6 sessions are recommended to achieve lasting results. Most clients don’t feel discomfort, and some say the procedure tickles. “You don’t experience soreness because the lactic acid doesn’t build up,” Nielsen said. For those trying to lose weight before warmer weather arrives, Seland Chiropractic Family Wellness Center offers the SkinnyUp program to help you see a daily weight loss of up to 2 pounds. The 23-day option is for those wanting to lose 10-15 pounds, while the 40-day option helps those who need to lose 25-35 pounds. Patients receive FDA-approved homeopathic drops and follow Dr. Simeons’ diet to achieve amazing results. “The SkinnyUp program works to reset your metabolism and serves to detox your body to help get your body functioning better,” said Seland. The frustrating ups-and-downs of weight loss and weight gain associated with emotional eating are familiar to Seland. She has lost 70 pounds on the program. “This program works. It’s amazing,” Seland said. She wants to empower people to take control of the number on the scale. Weekly support meetings provide strategies to help keep people on track. Laurie Seland is a weight loss coach and program director for Skinny Up at Seland Chiropractic Living Well Center.
