Mom of the Year 2014 COURTNEY COOLEY
Courtney is an amazing mother of two. Her youngest battles asthma and anemia and was recently diagnosed with juvenile arthritis. Courtney loves working as a Special Education IA at Sand Creek Elementary in Fishers. She also started the annual 5K Family Fun Run benefiting the Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital. She works on the event year-round, trying to raise awareness and as much money for the hospital as possible. Last year alone, the event raised $6,145! Courtney’s passion and positive attitude inspire others daily to be the best they can be. —Submitted by Tracey Smith
LAURA STUTZ Laura is the dedicated, loving mother of 14-yearold Jeremy, who has autism and limited verbal communication. For the past 12 years, Laura has researched treatments and advocated for Jeremy. Last March, she drove through a snowstorm to have Jeremy evaluated for facilitated communication in Syracuse, N.Y. Laura’s persistence to help Jeremy overcome his obstacles never wanes. Jeremy has been “saved by typing” on his iPad at Hamilton Southeastern High School. This has allowed him to reveal his true intelligence, his sense of humor, and his likes and dislikes. Even with all of this to keep her busy, Laura still finds time to nurture and support the activities of 11-year-old Jason, 8-year-old Heather and 5-year-old Holly.
Besides wearing the title of “Mom of the Year,” our winner will receive a prize package: • Wine basket from Tasteful Times • 1 self defense class from Circle City Safety • Free family photo shoot and an 8x10 print of your choice by Brosmeric Photography • Dinner for 2 from Murphy’s Pubhouse • Spa basket from Ambience Day Spa • $25 gift card from Best of What’s Around • One hour massage session and one hour facial session at Massage Envy • Bouquet of flowers from McNamara Florists

Janell is the mother of five girls and a dog. That in and of itself is a task, but when four of your girls are quadruplets, that just means your life is four times as hard! Still, Janell manages to work outside the home and be an active mom. All of Janell’s daughters are polite, hard-working and sweet young women and role models. Her quadruplets are graduating from Fishers High School this year! — Submitted by Beth Ayen

BRICKWORLD INDY: FISHERS RESIDENTS HELP MAKE MEMORIES Writer / Laurie Quinn
Brickworld Indy, an event organized by Fishers residents Bryan and Kathie Bonahoom, features Lego creations. The Bonahooms organized 40,000 square feet of displays that the public enjoyed March 8-9. It was the fifth consecutive year for this Lego display and exposition to take place in Indianapolis. Even though the event has come and gone for this year, the memories that this Fishers couple helped create will live on in the hearts of the children and adults who attended. One child especially will have extra special memories of this event. His name is Daniel, and he is from Lebanon, Ohio. Daniel is battling muscular dystrophy, and his heartfelt wish was to attend Brickworld Indy. On March 7, the local Make-A-Wish granted Daniel’s wish. Not only did Daniel get to attend this event, he also got an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the facility led by IndyLUG (Indy Lego Users Group) member Nick Gamertsfelder, who is also an adult former Make-A-Wish kid. Make-A-Wish relies on the support of the community to grant local wishes. And
the Bonahooms helped create memories that will make Daniel smile as he battles muscular dystrophy. Keep an eye out for this incredible event next year as well as for local Fishers residents who make our community a better place to live by giving back to children. For more information on next year’s event, contact Kathie Bonahoom, event planner for Brickworld Indy, at 317572-LEGO (5346) or visit the website at
brickworld.us. For more information on the local chapter of Make-A-Wish, visit the website at Indiana.wish.org or call 1-877206-9474. Laurie Quinn is the publisher of Fishers Community Newsletter. She enjoys being outside whenever possible whether it is biking, hiking or pushing her kids on the swings.

A HARLEM GLOBETROTTER AT HOME IN FISHERS Writer / Kara Reibel
Originally from Princeton, N.J., Darrick Grant played college basketball at the College of New Jersey. He set his sights on playing professionally. After graduation, a scout from the Harlem Globetrotters approached Grant for a tryout with their organization. Having been a fan of the Globetrotters since the age of 7 when he saw the Globetrotters live, Grant was thrilled. Globetrotters are selected not only for their prowess on the court, but also for their personalities. After all, the Globetrotters are pure family entertainment, and it takes showmanship to pull off mixing it up. Not long after being selected for the
Globetrotters, Grant earned the nickname of “Dizzy.” When asked why that name was selected for him, Grant explained, “During a game, I went up against an opponent and spun around him, and he looked dizzy, so the nickname was given.” The franchise name accurately describes the travel schedule. The Grant family coordinates their schedules to maximize their family time. “It’s a challenge, but we make it work,” says Darrick’s wife, Carly, who is the marketing director for the Applied Behavior Center for Autism. The team plays around 250 games a year, and Grant will be flown out ahead of a game to do public relations. “It’s tough, but I enjoy it,” says Grant.
Along with spending time with his family, Grant enjoys fishing whenever he can. His father and his grandmother used to take him fishing when he was little. He even managed to join the “Bass Dr.” on an episode. “I joined Todd [Hollowell] for a taping of the fishing show in Detroit.” See bassdr.com for further information and a photo of Darrick with two large bass caught during filming. After eight years with the Harlem Globetrotters, Grant is still going strong. On the website for the team, Grant is one of the featured personalities. He is known for his impersonations of famous basketball players, and there are many video clips of his talents. His impersonation of Kobe Bryant is uncanny!

CROWN SENIOR LIVING OF INDIANAPOLIS OPENING SOON
needed, making changes in living situations much more flexible. And, very important to many people, they are one of the few assisted living communities to accept the Medicaid waiver as a form of payment, allowing residents to age in place even if they face financial obstacles.
Writer / Marcia Vigren
Aging: While it’s better than the alternative, it’s not something that many people look forward to. But Crown Senior Living of Indianapolis is a community that actually gives a social life back to those that have slowly lost it, making aging not just tolerable, but fun. Consider this typical day in the life of a Crown resident. Wake up and hop into the low-step shower. Mosey down to the restaurant style dining room, where you meet up with friends for a nutritious meal prepared by a culinary chef. Catch the shuttle bus to do some shopping and arrive back home for another delicious meal. In the afternoon, you organize a euchre game in the Town Hall and Bistro with some fellow residents, sipping on juice or coffee, and later catch a basketball game on the TV in the activity room. Oh, it’s already
dinner time — you better hustle down to the restaurant for another mouthwatering culinary experience. Afterward, the exhaustion is setting in from a full day of fun, enriching activities, but you can’t resist hanging out with friends for tonight’s bingo game. Tomorrow, you have an appointment at the in-house beauty salon and family coming to visit in the common room. That doesn’t sound bad at all! Just the thought of someone cleaning my room and a culinary chef cooking for me every day is enough to make me consider forging my age to 55 to allow me admittance now. In the words of Jeff Gronemeyer, Crown’s sales director: “It’s like living in an 84-room mansion.” Because Crown is a brand-new community set to open late April, every apartment is new. Rent for a studio or one-bedroom apartment is paid month-to-month. No annual contracts or upfront capital are
While socialization is abundant, that’s not all that Crown offers. They are a fully licensed assisted living community, meaning they can manage residents’ medications and help them bathe, if necessary. They have a 24-hour care staff on-site. It is no coincidence that they are in such close proximity to Community North Hospital. They have a working relationship with the hospital—a doctor visits once a week to do rounds with any residents wanting care in the on-site clinic, where residents also can go for physical, occupational or speech therapy. In addition, there are four furnished transitional care apartments for those who are not admitted to the hospital but aren’t feeling up to par, or those recently discharged from the hospital. The second floor houses a secure Memory Care neighborhood (Serenity) for those with Alzheimer’s or some form of dementia. There, the residents have their own restaurant in which they are involved in the dining experience, if they’re able. Programming in Serenity is a holistic approach to wellness that strives to maintain a structured normal lifestyle that maximizes the residents’ health and life abilities.

For people who have lost much of their independence because they no longer drive or are afraid to go out in marginal weather, the Crown Assisted Living Community helps them get back to living their life. “We come to work, every day, to deliver respect and passion to our residents and to ensure that our corporate mission of providing affordable assisted living and memory care is being delivered,” Gronemeyer said. “We serve more singles than couples. We have a more affordable price point. We have an holistic approach that really delivers on the promise of assisted living. Storing a person is not what we do. This is designed to give them back the opportunity to be alive … going and doing things. We take them to places. The programming puts them back in that range of ‘What did you like to do when you were 50? Let’s do that now, but you don’t have to go all over the place to do it.’”
CROWN SENIOR LIVING OF INDIANAPOLIS • Spacious studio and one bedroom apartments • Three delicious, nutritious meals prepared by our culinary chef • Restaurant-style dining served in a beautiful dining room • Private dining room available • Beauty salon • State-of-the-art security and fire safety systems • Beautiful bistro and lounge area • Theater, library and multipurpose room
Gronemeyer noted that most of the people who join an assisted living community actually arrive malnourished. Many of them have been eating convenient prepackaged microwave meals that are high in carbohydrates and sodium. Because of the delicious, freshly made nutritious meals the residents receive at Crown, they will start feeling healthier and have more energy within the first 30 days. Now that is “getting back to life.”
• Activity and computer room • Therapy and exercise room • Beautiful, spacious courtyards • On-site clinic for physician visits • 24-hour care staff on site • 24-hour licensed care staff on Memory Care
Crown is the perfect senior living solution for mental and physical wellness. They are accepting applications now. For more information, please visit their website at crownalin.com, or call 317-376-INDY.

PAM NEWELL THE ART OF THE MASTER Writer / Kara Reibel
The artistry behind the work of Pam Newell is simply artistic brilliance. Her paintings capture the essence of simple, beautiful objects and landscapes in a way that we see with our eyes, but seldom are able to capture with a photograph or to adequately describe with words. The teal blue teacup, peonies bursting from a vase, roses with their stems seen through a water-filled vase and a copper African kettle seem to be exactly as the eye remembers. The longer I stare at one of her still life paintings, the less I recall that it’s a painting and not the actual objects set before me. Modest, humble and gracious, Newell says that we live in an artistic vortex in Indiana. “There is so much talent here,” says Newell.
“Hamilton County alone has a wealth of artists with incredible abilities.” Newell attended the University of Massachusetts where she studied two-dimensional design and art education.
A student of Newell’s, Julie McCullough, enrolled in Newell’s class at the Indianapolis Art Center. McCullough, who hadn’t touched her brushes since college, credits Newell for her heartfelt encouragement and instruction, leading her to a place that she Being completely unfamiliar with the hadn’t thought possible to go as a painter. “I process of painting with oil and pastels, an believe we get caught up in everyday life and informative lesson on the supplies was in when things begin to calm down, we wish order: “Pastel is very immediate and has to reach for something within us. Pam has gorgeous luminous color. It’s pure pigment,” brought that out in me, and I can honestly explains Newell, “which is the same pigment say she has been one of the best mentors,” states McCullough. The praise for Newell in oil, only in pastel it’s held together with is consistent from her students. “When a binder.” The word pastel comes from the word paste — not a reference to light colors. you leave her workshop, you feel like she has elevated your self-confidence and you Stretched canvas isn’t a preferred surface are ready to go home and try many of her for Newell. Newell, who works from home along with her husband, Bruce, who occupies another office in their home, used mostly pastels when their children were young. “I could leave the pastel on the easel and come back to it later, and with little children, the interruptions were frequent,” says Newell. Once she had the luxury of longer, more focused time at her craft, she went back to mostly oils. “I have transitioned to about 70 percent oil paintings,” says Newell, “but I love both media, for different reasons.” Oil is an ideal medium for still lifes, which are the bulk of Newell’s work right now. On occasion, Newell, like other artists, will paint “en plein air.” This simply refers to painting outside in the elements. When Newell paints outside, she paints almost exclusively in oils, which are easier for her to set up. She indicated that the setup with pastels is heavier and she found that she spent a great amount of time looking in the grass for them. Newell donated two paintings to the Ambassador House, both in pastel, and one was done en plein air on-site. As a member of several artists associations, such as the Indiana Artists Club founded by T.C. Steele and other notable artists in 1917, Brown County Art Guild, Hoosier Salon, Hamilton County Artists Association and Indiana Artisans, to name a few, Newell has gotten to know many amazing artists around the state. “What never ceases to amaze me is the deep pool of talent here,” says Newell. “We are all mutually respectful and supportive of one another.” When asked about plein air sites in Indiana, Newell responds, “There is beauty all around. You just need to know where to look. And sometimes it’s right outside your door, with the proper lighting. The only requirement is opening our eyes and our minds.” For further information about Newell, visit pnewellart.com.

ou can draw a parallel between financial health and physical health. In the care of an experienced practitioner, better outcomes are likely. It is therefore telling that so many doctors and physicians have their portfolios with the advisors at Gagne Wealth Management Group. As Raymond James financial advisors, the motherand-son partnership focuses on providing the most appropriate financial advice to high-net-worth clients. Jay Gagne and mother Paula Gagne, senior financial advisor, apply nearly five decades of combined experience – and a partnership of 18 years – in building customized portfolios. “We have a philosophy,” says Jay Gagne, CIMA®, “that clients come to us with unique financial needs and it’s our job to create customized solutions.” This is something the partners are well prepared to do. The difference in their ages adds a depth to their understanding of the needs of their clients, who range from retired to just starting out. It merits mentioning that clients find the company by referral and are not Jay’s or Paula’s; they’re clients of the practice, benefiting from the perspectives of both. One strong emphasis is on education, Jay says. “When clients understand the investment solutions they have, and why they have them, they’re more likely to stay the course.”
“Clients come to us with unique financial needs and it’s our job to create customized solutions.” — Jay Gagne, CIMA®, president, Gagne Wealth Management Group
“We have deep relationships in this business,” he says. “My mom has clients that go back as long as she’s been in the industry. And I have clients going back my entire 18-year career.” Jay says one of his best business decisions was to earn his Certified Investment Management Analyst® certification from the Wharton School. He is able to evaluate investment products, decide which are suitable, and determine how they fit and interact in a client’s portfolio. “That was really a game changer. And I use it every day in my practice.”
The advisors at Gagne Wealth Management Group follow a model that treats individual clients as minipension funds, investing primarily in privately managed accounts and allocating assets guided by forward-looking research. Rebalancing is a key element in client service. Primarily fee-based, the advisors at Gagne Wealth Management Group are on the same side of the table as their clients and actively involved in the investment process. Accessibility is key. Jay and Paula give clients their cell phone numbers and invite them to call at any time. Transparency is also essential. “I will always tell a client why we’re doing what we’re doing, and what fees and costs are involved. I’m a big believer in full disclosure,” Jay says. “That prevents a client from being surprised later. Integrity is most important in our profession.” Jay also believes the group’s service staff, Kelly Hudson, senior client associate, and Amy McNeil, client associate, are two of the best in the industry. “Clients love them,” he says.

COPING WITH SPRING FLOODING “In those situations, timing is everything,” he said. “The sooner we can dry those out April showers may bring May flowers, but professionally, the better chance we can save they can also cause costly flooding problems them. The damage can get quite bad, quite for unsuspecting homeowners. quick.” Writer / Nathan Lamb
The warning signs of trouble include discolored walls and ceilings, water stains and “bubbling” of paint or drywall, said Jim Krueger, who is a manager with Moore Restoration. He advised prompt action for homes showing those symptoms, saying water damage isn’t the sort of problem that goes away by itself.
DRAINAGE IS KEY
Krueger said the most common cause of springtime interior flooding is sump pump failure. For those who aren’t familiar with sump pumps, they are commonly used to remove water from basements susceptible to flooding. The pumps are placed in a
collection basin called the sump, often with a mechanism that activates the pump when water reaches a specific level. While sump pumps play a direct role in removing water from homes, Krueger said proper maintenance of a property’s drainage system is a key preventive measure. He listed foliage as a common culprit for problems, saying gutters clogged with leaves often can’t perform the important task of channeling drain water away from a home’s foundation and basement.

tend to focus on visible problems, such as wet carpet, instead of the bigger picture.
“It can be a brutal wait if it fails,” Porter said. “If you don’t prepare, you’re pretty much at its mercy, waiting for the plumber to come and fix it.”
“The biggest thing I think we see are people who try do it themselves, and they don’t realize the extent of the damage,” he said. “It’s not so much what you can see, but what you can’t see that becomes the problem.”
PREVENT BASEMENT PROBLEMS
Josh Lee is a service manager for Schuler Plumbing Inc., and he said the most common sign of looming sump pump trouble is debris accumulating in the basin. He suggested a simple test homeowners could try before the rainy season. “It is important, especially if it doesn’t get a lot of use, to go down there, fill it up with water and make sure it works, before it’s too late,” he said. A variety of optional features are available for sump pump owners. Lee said home security companies now offer a service where homeowners can be notified digitally of pump activation or problems. He listed batteries as another common accessory that can keep things running for up to eight hours during a power outage. While it costs extra, Lee said it can make sense for some homeowners.
Jim Krueger with Moore Restoration lists foliage in gutters as a common culprit to springtime flooding.
“Water is pressure and if that water has nowhere to go and it’s blocked, it’s going to find somewhere to go,” said Krueger. “Having proper drainage and grading around your house is only going to help prevent these kind of situations.” James Porter from Bolden’s Cleaning and Restoration recommended that drainage systems propel water at least 10 feet away from the foundation. He advised homeowners with sump pumps to check them regularly, saying they typically last five to seven years and it’s a good idea to have a
“If you have a finished basement, it’s definitely cheaper than a flooded basement or an insurance claim,” he said. Sump pumps aside, Porter said it’s a good idea for the whole family to know where the water mains are, in case an emergency shutoff is needed. He said a common cause of spring plumbing failure is when a garden hose is left attached to a spigot over the winter, which can cause water to freeze in the spigot pipe, putting pressure on that system and potentially causing it to leak or even break. “If you are going out to use the garden hose for the first time and if it was plugged in from last fall, that’s a red flag,” he said.
AVOIDING MOLD
Once a plumber fixes a leak, the next step is often to call a water restoration contractor to assess and repair the damage. Krueger said a common mistake is that homeowners
“A rule of thumb in our industry is that wet will always go to dry,” continued Krueger, saying wet carpet can often lead to wet drywall, baseboards and studs inside the wall. “That’s the part most people don’t seem to think about,” said Krueger. “When those get wet, that’s when you have the likelihood of mold and mildew developing.” Airborne exposure to residential mold can aggravate asthma, hay fever and allergies, along with causing coughing, congestion, runny nose and eye irritation, according to the Indiana State Department of Health. “All molds need water to grow,” according to the ISDH mold website. “Mold can grow almost anywhere there is water damage, high humidity or dampness. Removing the source of moisture, such as through repairs or dehumidification, is critical to preventing mold growth.” Explaining how that process works, Porter said removing the water is often only the first step, saying fans and dehumidifiers are typically needed to restore the air quality. Krueger listed a “musty” smell as a sign of bacteria growth, saying that’s often an indicator of costly hidden problems. He said insurance can be helpful there, but he added that homeowners shouldn’t wait until there’s a problem to find out exactly what’s covered by their policy. “Understanding your insurance coverage is very important,” he said. “Most insurance policies do not cover sump pumps or drain backups without an additional coverage on your policy.” “It’s usually pretty inexpensive, but it’s well worth it,” Krueger added. “It’s usually pennies on the dollar, to be honest with you.”

Those looking to start small are in luck. Several events on the season’s race schedule include 1-mile “fun runs” and other shortdistance events. The upcoming Spring Fling 5K and Fun Run on April 26 at the Primrose School of West Fishers lets participants choose between a 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) run or a 1-mile fun run, with all proceeds benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation. More advanced runners might be ready for longer races. Right here in Geist is the St. Vincent Geist Half Marathon and 5K run at Geist Park on May 17, which raises funds for the local schools to “promote health and wellness.” The Carmel Marathon Weekend, held April 12, is a multi-race event, which includes a marathon (26.2 miles), a half marathon (13.1 miles), a marathon relay and an 8K (4.97-mile) race. In addition to running, new events have emerged in recent years to include other fitness challenges and extra fun. Sprint triathlons, a competition involving swimming, biking and running, have grown in popularity, as have adventure races, such as the Dirty Girl Mud Run (5K run, May 17) and the CityQuest Urban Adventure Fun Run (5K run, June 7). When adding a pink boa, a splash of neon paint or a funny team name, these type of races have become wildly popular and are a great motivator for various charities.

ST. GEORGE ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN CHURCH REFLECTS THE PAST, IS BUILT FOR THE FUTURE Writer / Debra Legg Photographer / Brian Brosmer
At the new St. George Orthodox Christian Church, it seems as if heaven envelops the faithful the second they step inside and gaze at the images in the dome. It’s a powerful message that reflects a key tenet of the congregation’s beliefs. In Protestant churches, a steeple pointing upward is the most noticeable architectural feature. At an Orthodox church like St. George, the dome is at the center of the church in more ways than one. “It’s a key part of our faith,” said Father Nabil Hanna, who’s been the church’s pastor since 1995. “We are surrounded by faith— angels, saints and Jesus Christ. That’s why the dome is so important to us.” In November, just days before Thanksgiving, the congregation gathered for the first time at the new church at 10748 E. 116th St. The move from North Sherman Drive in Indianapolis to the 13-acre site in Fishers was made because the church needed more space and also because church leaders wanted to better serve their congregation, Hanna said. Over the years, the congregation had grown to the point where extra chairs and standing room often were needed to squeeze 400 or so people into the chapel, which had been built to comfortably seat 200, Hanna said.
The church membership had changed geography as well, with many members and their young families beginning to make their homes in the Fishers area. “The church was following the congregation,” Hanna said. The methodical search for a new site actually began in 1998. The church had settled on a location by 2004, with construction beginning in 2012. The cost: $7 million, including land, grading and utility work, the building, furnishings, and iconography. “There were significant sacrifices on the part of the congregation to make this happen,” Hanna said. The goal was to follow tradition, creating a church with the look and feel of those dating back to the 1500s, Hanna said. That’s one reason the religious imagery was so important. Expert iconographers were brought in from Greece to create it. “When Christianity was an underground religion in the Catacombs of Rome, there was artwork,” Hanna said. Still, the church is thoroughly modern in other aspects, with LED lighting and an insulated concrete form construction that creates a cutting-edge energy rating. The result: A church built to reflect the past and serve present needs, with an eye toward the future as well. “We have the sense of doing this as a legacy, but we’re also doing it to serve the
community,” Hanna said. “We want to be an integral part of the community, to contribute.” That future includes invitations to the Chamber of Commerce and local schools to make use of the church. There’s also a $2.5 million phase two in the works that will include an elementary school and a smaller chapel. That’s a few years down the road, though, Hanna said. Once the final touches on the fellowship hall are complete in a few weeks, the church plans to hold an open house to let the community see the building that inspired so much awe even among those working on the project. Many workers brought their families to see the progress as the church was being built. They are very open to welcoming new members and will have a new reception hall available for use after Orthodox Easter on April 20th. “We formed close relationships with many of the workers,” Hanna said. “They had the sense that they were creating something special.” That first Sunday, as the congregation entered for the first service, Hanna knew that they had succeeded. “It felt like we were in heaven.”

he band was formed 3 years ago, when the boys were merely 7th and 8th graders. When asked how they decided to play music, they replied, “We got hooked on Guitar Hero and that’s what got us started.” When the boys aren’t doing tough-looking poses for promotional pictures or concerts, they are smiley and genuinely seem happy. Their music is definitely in the metal genre, but the lyrics speak to positive causes: anti-bullying, equality, and believing in and standing up for yourself. These are lyrics the boys write together, themselves, from personal experiences. They sit down for what might be called “brainstorming sessions” and build on each other’s musical ideas. Not only is their music smart, but their grades reflect how intelligent and hard working each band member is at FHS, too.
However, when asked about college, they are all pretty clear that they really want to make music their careers and focus on their band. The juniors, Jack and Spencer are looking at colleges, but more as a backup plan. “I’ll go to college, but if we get a record deal, I’ll drop out,” says Jack.
been mentoring the group since September and helping them to “tighten up the music, making it sound better/more interesting,” say the band mates. The boys enjoy his insight and like that he “says what he thinks and doesn’t hold back.” John E. Gee thinks: “They have the ability to make it big.”
Mike Iosue became their manager, indirectly, by being Jon’s youth basketball coach. “We thought Jon was going to be a basketball player, but that’s just not Jon. This is what he is,” explains Laura, Mike’s wife and Jon’s mom. So Mike decided to be his “coach” for the band, helping the boys navigate through all that is involved. “You don’t want your kids to just succeed as a guitar player, but as a man,” states Laura.
They are ALREADY making it big. Infamous walked away with SEVEN awards at the Best of the Best: Indy’s Local Music Awards in March 2012, including Best Overall Band, Best Metal Band and Best of each: Vocals, Lead Guitar, Rhythm Guitar, Bass Guitar, Drummer. A month later, they won First Place in the Gorilla Music Battle of the Bands. They released their first EP (Extended Play … a CD that is 30 minutes or less) in September, 2012, entitled “Hold Your Apathy.” This past summer, they performed at Rockapalooza in Michigan. This event gained them quite a few fans,
Currently, the band is working with Jon E. Gee, the bassist for John Mellencamp since 1999 and before that, for Ted Nugent. He has
Adam Anderson, is a sophomore and the lead vocalist. He used to also play bass, but now just focuses on vocals. “I felt myself growing and wanted to do more with it live by interacting more with the audience,” states Adam. He has 7 years of guitar/bass lessons and three years of vocal lessons, which he just recently ended.
Jon Iosue (pronounced Yozway) is a sophomore, the lead guitarist and the only band member to continue taking guitar lessons, which he has done for the last five years. His dad, Mike Iosue is their manager. The band holds practices, once or twice a week for a few hours, in their basement which, fortunately, has a doubleinsulated ceiling.

some of whom even followed them to Indiana to see them play at Metal Fest. Just recently, they opened for Saving Abel in Toledo, OH. Infamous is preparing to release their 7 track, second EP entitled “Inspire Yourself ” in May, which includes the guest vocalist Spencer Charmas from Ice Nine Kills. They will hold a CD Release Show on May 2nd
at 6:30 pm at Studio 37, which is located inside The Music Academy in Fishers (10029 E. 126th Street, Suite D). Everyone is welcome and tickets are $10 presale or $12 at the door. On June 21st Infamous will be at the MegaTon Music Festival in Toledo, OH, performing main stage at approximately 7 pm. More appearances are being scheduled as you read this, so be sure to check these sites for shows, EP sales and
Spencer Tillman is a junior and the newest member of the band, joining the group December 8th. He is the bassist and backup vocalist and also holds a job at Little Caesar’s Pizza. While he is new to the band, he isn’t new to the boys. They’ve been friends for a few years. He is a selftaught guitar player, only once taking advanced lessons for three months. Prior to this he played for another band.
information: InfamousTheBand.com facebook.com/InfamousTheBand. You can purchase their EP’s at the following locations: iTunes, CDBaby (Amazon), Luna Music, Axis Mundi, or Indy CD and Vinyl. Get a piece of this amazing group of local boys, now, while they are still local … and still boys.
Drew Johnson is a sophomore and plays the drums. In addition, he works at the Hamilton 16 Imax Theater. He was taught to play the drums by his dad when he was only 4 years old. He would sit on his dad’s lap in front the drums, with sticks in his hands, following his father‘s rhythm. Now, he is such an accomplished drummer, using multiple drum sticks for varying sounds, that at the end of a set, before the guitars have ended their reverberations, he is checking his cell phone messages.
Jack Rainbolt lives a few doors down from Jon, so they grew up, together. He is a junior and plays rhythm guitar with the band. In all of his spare time (right!), he works at Goodwill. He started playing the guitar at age 12, taking lessons at Bongo Boys with Jon for a few years.

SOUTH OF CHICAGO PIZZA OPENS IN FISHERS the pizza… A lot of transplants from Chicago to Fishers have praised me on their hands and knees saying that finally someone is doing pizza right.” This influx of Fishers’ fans prompted Jaeger to open the Saxony location. South of Chicago uses fresh ingredients. Not only is the Italian sausage shipped from Chicago, but so is the French bread that is used for making sandwiches. The dough used for deep-dish and thin crust pizzas however, is homemade daily using a large mixer. Some of the main specialties at South of Chicago include the Italian beef sandwiches and these homemade dishes: Italian sausage meatballs, lasagna and chicken parmesan. Writer / Janet C. Striebel
South of Chicago Pizza and Beef has recently opened in Saxony next to Michele’s Studio near 131st and Olio Road. This new pizzeria and full bar offer fresh Italian beef sandwiches, thin and deep-dish pizzas, salads, extensive beer/wine lists and so much more. “Fishers has totally embraced us,” says Bob Jaeger, co-owner of South of Chicago Pizza and Beef. “We’ve been so incredibly busy. We didn’t anticipate this so fast.” Even before the outdoor sign arrived, the word spread tremendously. Jaeger says, “In order to compensate for the high volume of pizza deliveries, we are adding another wing with more ovens next to Jack’s Donuts where we can hold a separate delivery/ carry out area.” Also Jaeger plans to add an indoor/outdoor patio which will serve as an extension of the dining room that will offer screened windows to let the breeze flow through during warm weather. Plus, there will be a separate area for smokers that will feature a firepit and seating area. After moving to Indianapolis with his family in 1999, Jaeger immediately missed the style of pizza he had left behind in Chicago. As a result, he started a catering business downtown within an old insurance building. He eventually converted it into the original South of Chicago Pizza and Beef that still resides at 619 Virginia Avenue. Jaeger says, “One of the biggest jokes in Chicago when we would come down to the Indianapolis 500 is: it’s okay to go just don’t eat
Are you ready to party? South of Chicago will host a grand opening celebration in Saxony Park with a large tent sometime in May. This event will feature local bands, pizza by the slice, kegs of beer and fun. Further, a catering central is scheduled to open in Greenwood in about a year. Jaeger adds, “We can save wedding parties so much by catering for them and helping to keep costs down.” After working in pizza parlors for twenty-five years during the days of trying to survive as a heavy metal musician, Jaeger is confident he has combined the creative niche from all the Chicago-style restaurants. He says, “My dad and I spent a lot of time coming up with the right recipes out of his kitchen. I would come home from Indy and we’d fine tune things. Sadly, he passed a few years ago so I’m living out our dream. Basically, I’ve taken the best of what I learned from all the pizzerias I’ve worked for in Chicago and brought it to Indy.”
THE HOURS OF OPERATION FOR FISHER’S SOUTH OF CHICAGO ARE AS FOLLOWS: Sunday -Thursday 11am-10pm Friday and Saturday 11am-11pm Bar hours vary. See store for details.
This location is now offering a lunch buffet available Monday-Friday from 11-2 pm which includes deep-dish pizza, salad bar, pop, and a special entrée each day. Go to southofchicagopizzaandbeef.com to learn more. Janet C. Striebel is a Fishers resident and freelance writer. She and her husband, Doug, have three children: Ryan, Jessica and Justin. She has been writing for atGeist.com for more than seven years and claims that the best part is meeting all the interesting people in her community.

People line up to wait for the grand opening!
Writer / Katie Burrell
If you have ever wanted to shop in another woman’s closet, you now have the opportunity. Clothes Mentor, a consignment shop at 11670 Commercial Dr., celebrated its grand opening last month. Dozens of women lined up outside for a chance to purchase gently worn designer clothing and accessories for a fraction of their original cost. Store Owner Mark Canada said the shop opened to sellers in late January and has purchased nearly $80,000 of stock from local women. Items are carefully selected based on the current fashions and season. Clothes Mentor features handbags from designers such as Louis Vuitton, Kate Spade and Coach that go for $400 new in stores, but are sold in great condition at Clothes Mentor for $40 to $50. Clothing ranges in size from 0 to 26 and petite to maternity. Shoppers can find name brands such as Ann
CLOTHES MENTOR: SHOPPING ANOTHER WOMAN’S CLOSET
Taylor Loft, Chico’s, White House/Black Market, J. Crew and Banana Republic. The store purchases items daily, so the racks are always changing. “We want you to have a new shopping experience every time you come in,” Canada said. Canada’s wife, Kathy, and daughter, Jami Potter, run and manage the store. The family also owns a Plato’s Closet on the east side of Indianapolis. Kathy explained, “We have had Plato’s Closet for 13 years, and during that time we would have women in the store telling us that they wished there was a store like this for them — a store where they could bring in their gently used, name brand clothing, shoes and accessories for cash.” The staff of 12 employees has been trained to look for quality clothing that women want to buy. In addition to style, they look for tears, stains or other imperfections.
Sellers can come in the store any time, up to an hour before closing, and get paid cash for their items. “Buying inventory is our top priority,” Mark said. “One woman made $1,200 selling her clothing, walked out and told her friends.” According to Mark, this snowball effect is what makes Clothes Mentor a success. This shop is the 99th store to open in the nation and the first in central Indiana. Shoppers have come from Muncie and Kokomo, as well as Columbus, Ohio, to visit the Fishers location. Clothes Mentor also has stores in Ft. Wayne and South Bend. Clothes Mentor is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. Shoppers can participate in the loyalty program and get 20 percent off for every $200 spent in the store. For more information visit Clothes Mentor online at ClothesMentor.com or find it on Facebook.

MEALS ON WHEELS OF HAMILTON COUNTY: DELIVERY WITH COMPASSION Writer / Whitney Mucha
Meals on Wheels of Hamilton County is a not-for-profit organization serving the entire county. “Most people have never heard of our organization,” says Executive Director Beth Gehlhausen. “We seem to be a well-kept secret even though we really want everyone to know about our services.” Established in 1975, Meals on Wheels of Hamilton County serves meals to people who are unable to prepare meals for themselves. This need might be permanent for people with physical or mental limitations, or it could be a temporary need while someone is recovering from an illness or surgery. In 2013, this local Meals on Wheels assisted approximately 420 people totaling almost 54,000 meals. Meals are prepared under the supervision of a registered dietitian in local hospital cafeterias. Community Heart and Vascular Hospital, Community North, Riverview, Sheridan Health Care and Rehabilitation, and St. Vincent Carmel all prepare meals for delivery every Monday through Friday. The hot meals are usually the same food items served on the cafeteria line for the facility that day, but special meals also are available for those with dietary restrictions. Volunteer drivers pick up food from the hospitals in the late morning at the beginning of their route. The nutritious food is served hot so that clients are ensured a healthy meal that tastes delicious. Each meal is packaged individually in disposable containers for ease of client clean up. The one-meal plan includes a hot entree and sides, a dessert, bread and butter, and milk
or juice. This entire meal with free delivery only costs the client $4.50 per day. A second, lighter meal of a deli sandwich, fruit or dessert, and milk or juice may be added to the order, bringing the two-meal plan total to $7 per day.
Meals on Wheels provides services to individuals at all socioeconomic levels. Approximately 60 percent of meal recipients in Hamilton County pay for their own meals, have meals paid for by family members, or are sponsored by a church or other organization. The remaining 40 percent receive assistance or full sponsorship through the Sponsor-a-Senior program or the Central Indiana Council on Aging. These deliveries would not be possible without the help of community volunteers. It takes about 340 volunteers a month to deliver meals to Hamilton County Residents. Delivery shifts are available Monday through Friday and normally require a two-hour commitment once a month. Volunteers are screened with a background check and must have a valid driver license and car insurance. Coordinators train all new volunteers and ensure they are ready for their own routes. Many volunteers team up with a friend or coworker. Fishers Rotary Club, the Town of Fishers and First Merchants Bank consistently provide volunteers for Meals on Wheels of Hamilton County. “We rarely have a volunteer leave unless their health has changed, their work schedule changes or they move,” Gehlhausen says. “Our volunteers are very committed to the purpose of delivering hot meals to those in need.” Unlike some organizations that experience high operational costs, Meals on Wheel of
Hamilton County has a low overhead because so much is donated from the community. One of the most important of these donations comes from Riverview Hospital, which provides about 1,400 square feet of office space, plus all telephones, computers and the information technology network.
Meals on Wheels also applies for grants, receives annual donations and holds fundraising events to assist with meal subsidies and the small overhead costs to run the organization. What can you do to help? Spread the word about the services of Meals on Wheels of Hamilton County. “The people in need might be your neighbors, you might sit next to them at church, or you might have a family member trying desperately to continue living independently,” Gehlhausen says. “We are woefully under-serving this county, and we want to change that by spreading the word about our services.” The next fundraising event, scheduled for September, will feature a Dancing with the Stars of Hamilton County theme. Attendees will have a chance to vote on their favorite dancers to raise money for this worthy organization. Tickets will be available in advance, and information will be posted on the organization’s website as the event date approaches. BRITTANY KELLY: OFF THE COURT AND ON THE GREENS Writer / Christy Watson Photographer / Brian Brosmer
Talk about a quick rebound! Just weeks after finishing her rookie year as the 2013–2014 coach of the Hamilton Southeastern freshman girls’ basketball team, Brittany Kelly is eager again to feel the texture of the ball in her palm. Only this time the ball will be a little smaller, a little firmer and white in color, as Brittany is also the assistant golf pro at the esteemed Hawthorns Golf & Country Club and by all accounts a scratch golfer! The Ball State grad golf-pro-turnedbasketball-coach has just returned from Florida for continuing education and work on her Professional Golf Management program. Brittany is in the zone and ready to take her coaching skills off of the court and out onto the greens and fairways. “My favorite thing about coaching is passing on the lessons that were taught to me, seeing the results in the players when they are able to execute the lesson and really enjoy the game,” she says. Brittany is blessed to have been coached and mentored along the way by the best, HSE girls’ basketball Coach Chris Huppenthal, during her 2005 and 2006 sectional winning seasons. But it was her own father, Ken Kelly, the 2013 head coach of the state champ
Carmel girls’ golf team, whose patient and intentional introduction to the game of golf when she was 8 that has made a heartfelt impact on Brittany’s life. “My Dad inspires me every day. He let me decide if I liked golf or not at a young age and never pressured me to play. Growing up as a coach’s daughter inspired me to be just like my Dad. He is known as a caring, passionate coach. I hope I can make a difference in basketball and golf like he did with his players,” she says. Her focus now is on the start of her second season at Hawthorns Golf & Country Club, where she is organizing the highly regarded women’s league, marketing and preparing the Get Golf Ready clinics. No matter what the task, she tries to pass along the life lessons that were so freely and lovingly given to her: Work hard, have fun, be with friends and love the game. Those qualities are all par for the course for the very accomplished and driven Brittany Kelly. You can email Brittany at Bkelly@ hawthornscountryclub.com or call her at 317-845-0330, ext. 234. Christy Watson is a mother to three beautiful children and works parttime at Mama Bear’s Bakery.

COMMUNITY FOCUS – FISHERS MUSIC WORKS, INC. Writer / Grant Lansdell
Educational excellence, safe surroundings and robust development — these are some of the things that make Fishers one of the top 10 places to live in the country. As Fishers evolves from a town, it will take more than just a growing population to make it a true city — cultural opportunities will help define its character. With this vision in mind, several local volunteers co-founded Fishers Music Works last year with the goal of fostering enjoyment and appreciation of music by providing public concerts and other opportunities for local musicians and vocalists. FMW also seeks to involve the student community by providing side-byside performance opportunities. Currently FMW is proud to support our community with five unique ensembles: The 50-member Fishers Wind Symphony performs marches, band arrangements of orchestral pieces and other traditional compositions on a regular basis. As part of an educational initiative, all works receive a short biography in the programs to further the audience’s understanding and appreciation for both the composition and composer. The Wind Symphony’s next concert is April 27 at 7:30 p.m. at Christ the Savior Lutheran Church, 10500 E. 126th St. The 20-piece Nickel Plate Jazz Orchestra enjoys gracing the new Nickel Plate District Amphitheater stage during the summer. From bebop to big band, the NPJO brings

The Heartland Brass Quintet and Mudsock Jazz Combo are smaller, versatile ensembles available for corporate and personal events that cover a wide range of musical tastes: Jazz, blues, Dixieland, classical, patriotic and popular are all within the repertoire of these groups. Be sure to catch them June 28 at the Freedom Festival.
If you are a local musician and would like to audition for any of the ensembles, contact FMW at musicdirector@fishersmusicworks. org. If you are interested in showing your support for the performing arts in your community, contact president@ fishersmusicworks.org for sponsorship or visit FishersMusicWorks.org. You can also contact FMW on Facebook at FishersMusicWorks and Twitter @ HeyFishersMusic.
The newly formed Fishers Chamber Orchestra rounds out the offerings as Fishers’ latest ensemble that incorporates strings. The orchestra, which also features 12 wind instruments and tympani, performed their inaugural concert last month. As a newly formed nonprofit, FMW points out there are fantastic sponsorship and advertising opportunities during its

Trustee Jeff Hern and Youth Assistance Program Director Tricia Akers reviewing plans for the space renovation for their office space
FALL CREEK TWP PARTNERS WITH FISHERS YOUTH ASSISTANCE PROGRAM The Fall Creek Township Office will be providing office space for the new Fishers Youth Assistance Program. The Youth Assistance Program strives to build a healthy community for tomorrow by extending a helping hand to the youth of today through family assistance, tutoring and mentoring. These programs are available to qualified children needing assistance who are located in the Fishers area. “We are pleased to offer office space to this new program that will greatly benefit our community and especially our client base,” said Jeff Hern, Fall Creek Township trustee. “I fully support the vision of this program to help children that may be at risk with services that will allow them to reach
their full potential and eventually become productive adults.” Using money from the general fund, at the request of the trustee, the Fall Creek Township Board voted at the March 6 meeting to appropriate funds to remodel the existing space, adding three small offices for the program staff. The town of Fishers has given the program $15,000 for operation expenses. The space should be ready in early May. “We couldn’t be more excited to bring this program to Fishers,” said Hamilton County Youth Assistance Program Director Tricia Akers. “We have had such positive results in other areas. Connecting families
with resources is crucial in avoiding at-risk children becoming involved in the juvenile justice system.” Children are referred to the voluntary program by parents, police, citizens and school counselors. Almost 400 families have been assisted through this program since it was piloted in Westfield in 2009. The program was implemented in Noblesville in 2013. The hope is to continue expanding the program into areas throughout Hamilton County. To find out more about this program or how you can be involved, visit the website at youth-assistance.squarespace.com.

ADVOCATES PUSH FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SHELTER Writer / Nathan Lamb
Hamilton County is one of the fastest-growing regions in the state, and that has a growing number of advocates saying it’s time to establish a local domestic violence shelter. The United Way of Central Indiana is working with a group of community stakeholders to establish a 35-bed shelter on a vacant parcel that abuts the sheriff complex off Cumberland Road in Noblesville. The coalition is called the Hamilton County Domestic Violence Shelter Task Force, and its proposal was recently endorsed by Hamilton County Commissioners Christine Altman and Commissioner Mark
Heirbrandt. The task force is now lobbying the County Council, which will vote on a proposed 30-year lease for the project on April 2. In terms of population, Hamilton County is the fourth largest in the state, but it’s the only one in the top 10 without a domestic violence shelter. The closest shelter is run by the nonprofit Alternatives, which is a United Way partner agency and the established domestic violence shelter for Hamilton County based in neighboring Madison County. Joan Isaac Hamilton County area director for UWCI has been a key leader in the movement for a local shelter. She said Alternatives runs a great facility but added it’s simply too far away
for many victims who are seeking shelter and don’t want to uproot their children. “If you are in Carmel or Fishers, that’s a minimum hourlong drive,” she said. “How is a family going to stay together when the kids have to ride an hour each way on the bus?” Hamilton County averages roughly 1,800 domestic violence calls annually, according to Noblesville Police Chief Kevin Jowitt. He’s part of the task force and spoke in favor of the project before the County Council last year. Jowitt said police see the need for shelter on the job pretty much every day, because it provides a safe environment for those seeking help with transitioning away from abuse.

Fishers Town Manager and board member for Alternatives Scott Fadness, Fall Creek Township Trustee Jeff Hern and Carmel City Court Judge Brian G. Poindexter are actively working to bring a domestic violence shelter to Hamilton County.
Hern said it was the direct outcome of learning more about the issue. In the past, he referred domestic violence cases to local agencies, but he only recently learned shelter requests are referred out of the county.
“The immediacy of safety that a shelter provides doesn’t create a long-term solution, but it is a doorway to a long-term solution,” said Jowitt. “It allows for resources to start coming into place in a way that’s not being inhibited by the abuser to where we can allow a person to become established and independent.”
board of trustees, would not be entering into that kind of commitment if we felt it would jeopardize our whole agency, and we’re not going to let victims down. Once the shelter is in operation, they will be counting on us.”
Isaac estimated annual operating costs of the satellite location at $500,000, saying the nonprofit’s existing management infrastructure The task force proposal calls for Alternatives to would greatly reduce costs. Funding for the continue serving the county through a satellite operating budget is expected to come from a mix of municipal support, government location. Established in 1978, the nonprofit programs, grants and private donations. operates a 48-bed shelter in Anderson.
Hern followed up by touring the Alternatives facility and learning that Fall Creek and Clay townships consistently have the most referrals to Alternatives from Hamilton County. Given the circumstances, Hern said, it makes sense to support the service provider and to try to bring it to Hamilton.
Alternatives CEO Mary Jo Lee said the economy has been hard on families and there has been rising demand for shelter over the past three years. She described Alternatives as “one of the top shelters in the state,” adding they’re confident about opening the satellite facility.
Jeff Hern is township trustee for Fall Creek and represents roughly 55,000 people in parts of Fishers and Noblesville. He’s also the first trustee to reach a standing agreement with Alternatives, where the township pays for the first two weeks of shelter for a displaced resident at a rate of $55 per night.
“As a township trustee, I am charged with helping those who can’t help themselves at the time,” he said, adding close to $2,000 was spent on emergency shelter last year. “I would hope the little money I’m spending will…certainly help and benefit getting a facility here.”
“We have the right team working to bring the shelter to reality,” Lee said. “We, along with our That arrangement was reached in January, and

helping the client secure indemnification and access to any family resources, which are often controlled by the abuser. Hern said the township and Alternatives handle things on a case-by-case basis after the first two weeks. “At the end of 14 days we sit down and have a conversation about what comes next,” he said. Hern is one of nine township trustees in the county. While he’s the only one committed to supporting the shelter, he’s advocating the others to get involved, saying the Clay and Delaware trustees have expressed some interest. “They were going back to look at their budgets to see what they could do,” said Hern.

A Fishers resident, Isaac said the push for a local shelter dates back to a countywide assessment of social services conducted by the United Way of Indiana back in 2011. Isaac conducted research for that assessment, which involved interviewing first responders, school officials and health providers.

She said the study identified lack of shelter as the top area of need, and explosive population growth was a key factor in making it something the county could no longer do without. “Literally the population has doubled within a 10-year period,” she said. “As a community grows, social service needs grow.” The findings of that United Way assessment were presented in a Fishers Town Hall meeting roughly 18 months ago, and Isaac said that sparked formation of the task force from community leaders, law enforcement, past victims and health providers. Isaac said the group’s initial focus was on finding a suitable location. She said the sheriff’s complex best fit their criteria and the location allows for a cohabitation agreement that would have 10 sheriff investigators working within the building.
“It would be like having security there 24/7,” she said. “When you collaborate those resources like that, it just makes sense.” Should the lease be approved by the council, Isaac was optimistic a United Way grant could help secure an architect for the project by May or June. She said it’s hard to estimate the cost of the building without that. “Alternatives is applying for a UWCI grant to have an architect spec out the building, based on the needs of Alternatives and the sheriff,” she said. “Once we have a solid rendering, that will help determine the cost.” Isaac said the lease would be for $1 per year, and construction would be eligible for a grant of up to $1 million from the United Way. She also confirmed that the operating costs have been a recurring question mark for local officials, but added the majority have been supportive.
Fishers Town Manager Scott Fadness is a member of the task force and has served on the governing board for Alternatives the past three years. Fadness said raising public awareness has been a big part of his role and that a lot of people aren’t aware of the current commute for shelter or that domestic violence is an issue in the community. “Sometimes what I hear…is that we don’t have any of that because we’re an affluent, safe community,” he said. “The reality is that domestic violence crosses all social/economic boundaries.” “I think we need to have an eyes-wide-open approach and do everything we can for those victims,” he added. “We’re always concerned that a woman may choose to stay in a dangerous situation because she’s reluctant to seek shelter in a county that’s at least a half hour away…. she may not have a support system in Anderson.”
