LOUVINO: BRINGING SMALL PLATES & BIG WINES TO FISHERS NICKEL PLATE DISTRICT

Wine lovers, rejoice! LouVino is about to bring an expansive selection of premium wines, delicious southern-inspired small plates, and a new kind of dining energy to the Nickel Plate District in downtown Fishers. Owners Chad and Lauren Coulter are bringing their highly successful wine bar concept to Fishers after opening two wellreceived LouVino locations in Louisville, Kentucky. The first opened in 2014 and the second in July, 2016. Why Fishers as their first out-of-state expansion location? “We had so many people visit our Louisville locations from Fishers and Carmel, and they always told us how much they needed a wine bar like this where they lived,” Chad explained. “We did a ton of research on both areas, and after seeing the explosive growth, smart development plan, and the need for more independent dining options,

we decide that the Nickel Plate District area of Fishers was the right place for us to focus on. In the end, it came down to research and a gut feeling. This is where we needed to go first in our Indiana expansion efforts.”

take on its small plate menu. Chef Tavis Rockwell said while it’s his goal to make good food for the masses, it’s anything but basic. He focuses on using fresh seasonal offerings to keep the southern-inspired menu exciting, and he balances a selection of favorites, such as the loaded baked potato tots and fried chicken tacos, with seasonal dishes such as seared duck breast over five-spice risotto and crispy rock shrimp and grits.

Although they chose to open a location in Fishers, Chad and Lauren haven’t ruled out the possibility of opening additional locations in the Indy area, most likely in Carmel and on Massachusetts Avenue in downtown Indianapolis. Chad said they “I never recommend trying just one dish,” would like to eventually have up to 10 locations, as opportunity and resources allow. Tavis said. “I always recommend you try at least three. Once you try one, you’re really going to want to try as many dishes True to its name, wine is at the top of the as you can.” menu at LouVino. They offer 4-ounce and 6-ounce pours of their most popular wines, General Manager Michael Henry will run as well as several wine flights (tastings) the Fishers location. The soft opening is for those who would like to sample their unique selections. Each flight is named after scheduled for December 1 to 3 and the a local celebrity, with the flight names of the official opening is scheduled for Tuesday, December 6. The soft opening is scheduled Fishers location not yet being revealed. for December 13, watch their Facebook page for details. A lunch service will be What makes LouVino unique from other added Tuesday to Friday, and a brunch wine bars is not only its vast selection of wine, bourbon, and beer, but also a unique option for the weekend is also planned. 8 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2016 / atFishers.com

Long keeps this photo of himself as Buddy Walker from the movie Hoosiers with fellow actor Dennis Hopper.

Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger Photographer / Brian Brosmer

After a brief time out to talk strategy, Jimmy Chitwood and the rest of the Hickory Huskers basketball players return to the court to play out the final seconds of the state championship game against South Bend Central. Chitwood sneaks past the guard to advance for his final shot. He jumps, he scores, and Hickory wins 42-40 over South Bend.

Southwestern College. He said the smaller college experience gave him plenty of court time and some unforgettable games. “The coach let us play Division One schools,” he said. “We played schools including Oklahoma, Texas, and BYU in what they called ham and egg games, and learned so much. I wouldn’t trade that experience for the world.”

After college, Long returned to the basketball mecca that is the Hoosier state, The final scene in the movie “Hoosiers” still and that’s where our discussion returned. makes my pulse race 30 years after I first saw As we continued rehashing memories of it. Countless real-life Hoosiers are reliving the our alma mater, Long and I recall how the glory, too, at various parties around the state Trojans took their hoops very seriously and celebrating the movie’s release, 30 years ago. often progressed far in the tourney. But then again, the entire Hoosier state took hoops I caught up with Brad Long, who played very seriously. Buddy Walker, to relive some of the hoops action. Long said, “The movie came along during Not surprisingly, Long has remained in Indiana, not far from where he grew up. A fellow Center Grove High School alumnus, Long grew up in the Center Grove area and played basketball for the Trojans. “It was an honor to play for the team. I miss the old gym. It was such a fun place to play,” Long recalled. Long left Center Grove and headed west to another basketball-loving state, Kansas, to play for the Moundbuilders of

the perfect era. In the ‘80s, fans packed arenas for high school games, college and pro games.”

Indiana basketball fans were uniquely loyal to the sport, largely thanks to a single-class basketball system in which any school, no matter how big or small, had a chance to win the state championship. Long confessed, “My heart wishes Indiana would go back to that single-class system. Seeing old gyms packed like the ones in the movie really makes you miss it.” INDY METRO / DECEMBER 2016 / TownePost.com

To add to the enthusiasm, the popularity of Bobby Knight’s Hoosiers was at an all-time high with stars like Landon Turner, Ted Kitchell, Uwe Blab, and, of course, Steve Alford. The team had such a following that many folks couldn’t wait to tune in to Channel 4 for the IU game, kicked off by Rosemary Clooney and her rendition of the Indiana Fight Song. Even my mom watched it with us, claiming she was an obligatory fan, only because she was paying the school tuition. “Hoosiers” writer Angelo Pizzo and director David Anspaugh found that Indiana provided the perfect fan base and ideal film location. But getting the project off the ground was no slam-dunk. Starting with just a $6 million budget, they had to think creatively to make it happen. The filmmakers put out a callout asking for basketball players high school age up to 24 to audition for the movie. Long says he didn’t notice the callout, but his friends saw and urged him to try out. “I told them I wasn’t going to do it. I was 23 at the time, just graduated from college, started my first job, and I was engaged to be married.” But his friends persisted, and he tried out. He didn’t read for a specific part, but was delighted to be offered the part of Buddy Walker. The casting process was unique, Long recalled.

“Usually in a film like this, they pick actors who they hope might be able to play a little basketball,” he said. “This time, they wanted players with some skills and hoped they could teach them to act.” It’s a strategy that worked out, Long said, “Because the game scenes were not staged. We were actually playing ball.”

But the magic of “Hoosiers” will continue to endure for years to come, and Long said there’s one special element in the film that made it happen. “Redemption. It’s a theme that’s entwined throughout the movie,” he explained. “It’s not just about winning the game at the end. It’s about the team’s redemption, Shooter

Flatch’s redemption, and the coach’s redemption. Anyone can identify with that no matter what the era.” Long has his own message to audiences when he speaks. “Find your passion in life and pursue it. If you do, you’ll go far.”

As for learning acting skills, Long said he learned a little secret from leading actor Gene Hackman. “He was great. He taught me that the art of acting is not to act; it’s to just be yourself.” The busy filming schedule had Long jumping between locations in Knightstown, New Richmond, Nineveh, St. Philip Neri School, and, of course, Hinkle Fieldhouse. Unfortunately, the busy filming schedule required long and his fiancée to move their wedding date from November to December 1985. This gave Long a much different experience than most 23-year-olds, fresh out of college.

In a world of change, our focus is steadfast.

“You just get through it, and do what you have to do.” Thirty years later, Long is still reliving the glory as he makes his rounds doing motivational speaking. “I’m so blessed to have the opportunity to share my experience with others,” he said. “I’m truly humbled by the success the movie has attained. I give all the credit to the writer and director for making such an inspiring film.” But inspiring a new era and new generation isn’t easy. Especially today, when teens spend so much time on digital technology, play numerous sports, and their attention is drawn elsewhere. “Basketball used to be a big deal. Now it’s not as revered. It takes the crowd out of it when there are so many other things to do,” Long explained.

A BEEF & BOARDS CHRISTMAS Writer / Leia Barker

The heartfelt joy of the holiday season takes the stage in style at Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre as Santa and his friends celebrate the 24th annual production of “A Beef & Boards Christmas,” which opened November 25. “I am giddy when November rolls around and we start rehearsals,” said Deb Wims, who co-hosts the show with Kenny Shepard. “Sometimes I have to take a moment to appreciate how lucky I am to have the opportunity to do this every year!” Shepard, a Fishers resident, has been a part of the show since 1994. Wims joined the cast two years later. This is a particularly sentimental year for Wims, who is co-hosting the show with Shepard one last time before moving out-of-state with her family. “I was hired in 1996 as one of the dancers, ”Wims exclaimed. “I was

thrilled. I hadn’t done a Christmas show in several years and, being crazy about Christmas, I couldn't wait. I loved that it was a revue/ variety style show, filled with classic Christmas songs that I’d been singing since I was a kid. It was right up my alley.” Since then, she’s taken just three years off when she had her children. Together, she and Kenny have played everything from romantic partners to rag dolls. “I will miss my friends, especially Kenny Shepard, the most,” she said. “Sharing the stage with him year after year makes this show so special. He is so dear to me. The combination of us together on the stage makes it magical.” “Plain and simple, Deb is the heart of Beef & Boards, especially the Christmas show,” Shepard said. “Deb and I know each other so well, and especially in the Christmas show, we can pick up where the other leaves off.”

INDY METRO / DECEMBER 2016 / TownePost.com

This year’s quartet of principal singers welcomes back Peter Scharbrough, Betsy Norton and Cara Statham Serber from the 2015 production. Kyle Durbin rounds out the quartet, returning to the show after an eight-year absence. The Beef & Boards Orchestra, led by musical director Kristy Templet, has its own time in the spotlight as it is featured onstage, playing throughout the production. A tribute to the military honors all who have served, and children will delight to tell Santa their most special wishes when they have the opportunity to meet him during intermission. A Beef & Boards Christmas is on stage for 34 performances through December 23 in the intimate space of Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre. Tickets range from $41 to $66 and include Chef Odell Ward’s holiday buffet and select beverages. Parking is always free. For reservations, call the box office at 317.872.9664 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays. The Cardiovascular team at IU Health Saxony Hospital includes (from left to right) Dr. Edward Harlamert, Dr. Nathan Lambert, Dr. Antonio Navarrete, Dr. A. Farooq Iqtidar and Dr. Sami Aasar (not pictured).

THE BEST KEPT SECRET IN FISHERS IU HEALTH SAXONY DELIVERS HIGH-TECH HEART HEALTH, HEALTH & HOPE CLOSER TO HOME Beyond the golden-tipped fields of native Hoosier grasses and through several of Hamilton County’s famed roundabouts sits a nearly hidden gem in Indiana’s healthcare landscape. Indiana University Health Saxony Hospital, located at 146th Street and Olio Road, is one of the best kept secrets northeast of Indianapolis. But Edward Harlamert, MD is determined to spread the word. Dr. Harlamert, founding physician and director of cardiovascular (CV) services at IU Health Saxony, proudly stresses how he and his partners offer the highest level of Cath Lab technology and cardiovascular treatments available at any hospital in the state, without the drive downtown to IU Health Methodist Hospital. HIGH-TECH, HIGH-TOUCH CARE In the five years since IU Health Saxony opened its hospital doors, this team of five renowned cardiologists, which includes Dr. Harlamert, have worked to create a private practice feel in their high-tech, academic-focused cardiovascular program. “We see large health care networks and large hospitals moving toward team care. The difference at a location like Saxony is that it’s smaller, more personal, and one of our cardiologists becomes your total cardiologist. He’s the one you first met when you arrived

at the hospital. He’s the same one who reads your echocardiogram. He’s the same one who is going to see you back in the office in two weeks. And yet he’s the one that actually worked on your heart and fixed it,” says Dr. Harlamert. “That kind of personal knowledge is priceless to you but it’s also priceless for your cardiologist. He knows you. He doesn’t have to look you up in the computer and figure out what your past history was. And he knows the history of your family.” HEART DISEASE IN THE HEARTLAND Cardiovascular disease remains the major killer of people in the United States. Central Indiana is known for having high cholesterol levels as well as for being a place where people work hard but don’t necessarily exercise hard. All of us have stresses in our lives that could lead to heart disease. By age 50, most of American’s develop a gradually increasing risk for heart disease. Dr. Harlamert encourages patients not to ignore symptoms and risks factors. IU Health Saxony makes it easier than ever to get the care you need to prevent long term damage. “There is ease to access here, it’s a small hospital and you really feel like you’re walking right into your doctor’s front door,” Dr. Harlamert says.

Working to repair the human heart has saved lives since the 1960s. Today cardiac interventions continue to be increasingly less invasive, allowing doctors to work on a heart through smaller and smaller openings. EXPERT CARE CLOSE TO HOME The team includes Sami Aasar, MD, Nathan Lambert, MD and Dr. Harlamert, all interventional cardiologists who are experts at working on hearts and legs to return blood flow to those areas. The team’s newest addition in the vascular arena is A. Farooq Iqtidar, MD. He is highly-skilled at unclogging arteries and improving blood flow but also has fellowship training at structural heart repair. His advanced training enables him to close holes that may develop in the heart and work on the heart beyond the blood vessels. The fifth member of this team is electrophysiologist Antonio Navarrete, MD, Hoosier resident and native Spaniard. He specializes in fixing heart rhythm disturbances through procedures called ablations.

about the possibility that they could have a heart attack someday, perhaps like their father did. And yet they don’t fear going to the dentist twice a year throughout their lives. “Your heart is an important part of your body. It’s perhaps the most important part of how we work and live,” says Dr. Harlamert. “If you value anything, you should value your heart. At IU Health Saxony Hospital, fixing hearts is what we do best.” To learn more about the expert cardiovascular services offered right here in Fishers, visit iuhealth.org/saxony/heart-vascular-care.

“So that team is a very high tech team and yet a very personal team that helps care for patients,” Harlamert says. YOUR PREVENTATIVE CARE PARTNERS Heart health is not something to be feared. Many of the patients who come to the IU Health Saxony heart team put off thinking

He lived it. He grew up in Milwaukee and was inspired by his wrestling coach (a Navy veteran, himself) to enlist in the Navy, which he did at the age of 18. Originally trained as a missile launcher, Barnett dedicated himself to becoming a SEAL, which took a combined six months of brutal training, during which he said there were times he wanted to drop out. He was a SEAL from 1990 to 2005 and served three deployments to the Middle East. Barnett is President of the Indiana Chapter of UDT/SEAL, a

non-profit Veterans Support Organization whose members are made up of U.S. Navy personnel who have served, or are presently serving in the Naval Special Warfare community, and is involved with their national organization. He’s also a natural entrepreneur, having design and patent experience. But it is personal safety where his passion lies. At Poseidon Experience, attendees (individuals, groups and corporations) learn personal defense, situational awareness, and preparedness (avoidance) skills. Barnett also consults with law enforcement agencies. “Jesse is one of those entrepreneurs people naturally want to cheer for. His amazing background and skill set make him uniquely qualified to do what he's doing with Poseidon,” says John Wechsler, Founder of Launch Fishers, where Barnett started his company. “Whether for a corporate outing, team building event, or individual instruction, Jesse is creating a new category in the out-of-home experience economy.” After retirement from the Navy, Barnett contracted with High Threat/Low Profile security in Afghanistan and Iraq. GEIST'S NEWEST PACER THADDEUS YOUNG

Writer / Pat Carlini

It’s hard to believe the laid back, almost shy Thaddeus Young that I sat down with one day after practice is actually the aggressive 6’8”power forward for the Indiana Pacers, and not only is he new to the team, he is also our new neighbor here in Geist. “A realtor took us all over,” says Thaddeus, who moved here in June. “But we just kept coming back to the house on Geist —we just love it!”

While he was born in warm New Orleans, his career has taken him to teams based in colder locations, such as the Philadelphia 76ers from 2007 to 2014, Minnesota Timberwolves in 2014 and 2015 and, most recently, the Brooklyn Nets in 2015 and 2016. “Brooklyn was tough, “ says Thaddeus, shaking his head. “There was so much to do all around you, but it seems like it takes two to three hours to get anywhere.”

At first he feared it may be too far from downtown, but soon learned it is not a bad commute, and a few fellow teammates also enjoy their homes on Geist.

His wife, Shekinah, has been by his side all the way. The couple met in high school in Memphis, where she is the founder and owner of a successful beauty shop/blow out bar. They have two young boys, and Thaddeus says he enjoys his downtime with his family.

“What I enjoy is just looking out at the water,” laughs Thaddeus. “I don’t like going out there when it gets a little cold.”

“I’m a pretty simple guy,” laughs Thaddeus. “I enjoy my time on the couch before the kids get home.” INDY METRO / DECEMBER 2016 / TownePost.com

Thaddeus says his favorite dinner is pasta and he prefers a drink now and then, but not really wine or beer. “My dad used to say beer is an acquired taste, and for some reason, at 28 years old, I still haven’t acquired the taste for beer,” laughs Thaddeus. He has, however, acquired a taste for lakeside living, and now he and his family are enjoying their new home on Geist reservoir. Welcome Thaddeus Young and family! LIFE’S BEST MOMENTS ARE WORTH REMEMBERING Writer / Kara Kavensky

MemoryVentures’ motivation and mission is to help people share and preserve their best moments in life. MemoryVentures relocated from Los Angeles to the north side of Indianapolis in 2015, bringing its core group of employees with them. “It became evident that if we wanted to experience growth as a company, relocation was required,” states founder and CEO Anderson Schoenrock. “The economic benefits to our company and to our employees were worth moving to Central Indiana.” At the time MemoryVentures relocated to Indiana, it had just been named the eighth fastest growing company in Los Angeles. Not only has MemoryVentures relocated to Indiana with existing employees, it has nearly doubled its workforce to a total of 54, with plans for additional hires. Preserving and converting outdated media is a dominant segment of MemoryVentures’ business. Its conversion method is built upon a proprietary technology platform. So, at heart, it is a hightech company. “Through this platform we deliver an exceptional customer experience in a very personalized manner while maintaining the flexibility and scalability required to sustain hyper growth,” Schoenrock says.

MemoryVentures understands the responsibility of caring for one-of-a-kind family treasures. From the moment a package enters its facility, the contents are constantly monitored by video. “From the time the package is opened, its inventory is catalogued and each object given a unique barcode for tracking. We know exactly where every item is at any time,” Lopez says. In addition to preservation, MemoryVentures also creates large prints on canvas, murals, decals and even images for corn hole games. For the holidays, MemoryVentures has a special on its Heartland Box, which is a self-contained kit for digitizing a certain number of items. “The Heartland Box is designed as a stand-alone gift, or used to create one,” shares Lopez, who recommends visiting www. heartlandbox.com for details. ArtsyCanvas.com provides more amazing gift ideas, with personalized photos turned into high-quality works of art from digital images.

The MemoryVentures office is filled with reel-to-reel tapes, slides, negatives, VHS tapes and other outdated media storage options.

While its website serves as the main portal for the business, MemoryVentures welcomes walk-in customers who can see for themselves how their precious memories will be handled, from the time the package enters the door until returned with a USB thumb drive containing their treasured memories (or any other product the customer ordered).

“We take special care of the memories that each family is wishing to preserve,” says Director of Sales Danny Lopez.

“Please come by, we are located just a few doors down from the Indy Premier club soccer indoor facility in Fishers,” Lopez says.

INDY ELEVEN'S WINNING STRATEGY Writer / Kara Kavensky Photography provided

What a run. What a game. What a team. The Indy Eleven wrapped up its third season by remaining unbeaten at home and making it to the championship game, where they lost on penalty kicks to their North American Soccer League rival, the New York Cosmos. Within three short years, the Indy Eleven has accomplished what seemed nearly impossible, but team owner Ersal Ozdemir is used to achieving the impossible. “Growing up in Turkey, soccer is more than a sport, it is part of the culture,” explained

Ozdemir, CEO of Keystone Group LLC. “Like in so many other countries around the world, in Turkey you are kicking a soccer ball as soon as you can walk, and you are outside playing soccer until the sun goes down – and maybe even later. That’s how my passion for soccer developed, and I brought that with me when I arrived in Indiana to attend Purdue University, where I continued to play on the school’s club team.” Ozdemir’s quest to bring professional soccer to Indianapolis began as a grassroots effort. He was relentless in his marketing efforts to the soccer moms and millennials. With so many area youth playing the sport, and with soccer’s increasing popularity across the U.S., Ozdemir knew

Indianapolis was ripe for a team. “With a world-class city, sports and entertainment are part of the package,” says Indy Eleven President Jeff Belskus. Belskus spent most of his professional career with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, so he knows a thing or two about sporting events in our city. Ozdemir pulled Belskus from early retirement in January of 2016 to lead the Indy Eleven. “I’ve been in the Indianapolis area for almost 20 years and have seen it become the best city in the country in regards to using sports as a cultural and economic driver,” Ozdemir says. At the same time, Indianapolis is becoming more globally-

focused and diverse, with all of these factors making soccer a natural fit.” He continues, “The idea to bring soccer back to Indianapolis at the professional level was something I wanted to do for the city for a while, but I also know there were several factors that had to fall into place to make it something that would last. The passion with which the community and our supporters have embraced Indy Eleven in such a short amount of time gives me hope and proves that the club has done a lot of things the right way and will be around for generations to enjoy.” With the state legislature heading into a budget year, it’s a safe bet the Indy Eleven will have a strong presence in the statehouse as they push for the necessary legislation to build their own stadium southwest of Lucas Oil. “Mike Carroll Stadium is less than ideal for us because of its age and temporary nature,” says Belskus. “To continue our trend of improving fan experience, we feel it’s vital to have a high quality venue.

Mayor Joe Hogsett with Indy Eleven Owner, Ersal Ozdemir

“The new stadium could be built in Carmel or Fishers, but the vision is for Indianapolis. The excitement and support we have witnessed only continues to grow.” “The games are fun; there’s a bit of nostalgia in attending them. Perhaps it feels like college in a way, but with beer,” says Tony Bonacuse, Senior Vice President of Insurance Management Group, Indy Eleven season-ticket holder and close friend to Ozdemir. “The games are fun, family events, and the quality of the play has improved dramatically this year.”

Ozdemir is very visible at games. Hours before games begin, he is commonly found walking through the tailgating parties, where the fans adore him. Selfies, high-fives, fist bumps — Ozdemir is accessible. He will disappear near the end of the games to greet attendees as they leave the stadium. “Ersal is very hands-on and enjoys connecting with the Indy Eleven fan base,” says Bonacuse. “Ersal is so passionate about soccer, and loves being around others that enjoy the game as much as he does.” On a scale of 1 to 10, this team goes to Eleven. THE WINDOWBOX GARDENERS MARY STARNES AND GRETCHEN JACOBS Writer / Kara Kavensky Photographer / Nathaniel Edmunds Photography

Mary Starnes loves container gardens, and what once was merely her hobby has turned into a successful business. The Windowbox Gardener has now been dressing window boxes and containers professionally for the past 12 years. “My first home had window boxes built in,” Starnes said. “I loved the freedom and flexibility of doing these arrangements, and it grew from there.” During her sixth year Starnes partnered with Gretchen Jacobs, who left a career in real estate to join Starnes. “Our boys were on the same baseball team,” Jacobs said. “The Windowbox Gardner was organically growing, and I loved the concept. We love what we do.” According to their website, “The

Windowbox Gardener is a full-service container garden design company … committed to creating personalized container gardens unique to the individual.” The company takes into consideration sun requirements, location and personal preferences to create a personalized look. Most all of their clients renew every year, Jacobs said. Containers are changed four times a year, once for each season. With their business focused on excellent customer service, Starnes and Jacobs ensure happy customers. “We try to make something amazing for each of our clients every time we create their containers,” states Starnes. “We typically have new clients ask if their planters could look just like XYZ’s and we honor the overall aesthetic but make sure that all of our clients’ containers remain unique and special just for them.” 34 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2016 / atFishers.com

The attention to detail requires an elaborate behind-the-scenes organizational system of cataloguing looks, designs, and colors. With steady growth they’ve experienced year after year, they have been accurately able to predict the supply for the following year. Starnes and Jacobs lead their team of 11 employees, each dedicated to creating customized looks for their customers. “All of our employees are friends of ours, who all happen to be women,” Jacobs said. While Starnes and Jacobs have ordered most of their supplies for spring, it is not too late to get on their schedule. For pricing and other information, you can find The Windowbox Gardener online at www.windowboxgardener. com. You can also find The Windowbox Gardener on Facebook.

THE WINDOWBOX GARDENER'S GUIDE TO CREATING YOUR OWN WINTER CONTAINER: 1. B egin by using a container that is freeze proof so that it can be left out all winter without the fear of cracking. 2. Remove all plants and roots from the previous season’s plantings and refresh the soil. 3. Take a walk around your yard and make cuttings of assorted evergreen trees and shrubs. Use a sharp pair of pruners and trim pieces that are at least a foot in length. Boxwood, Arborvitae, pine and spruce are all great options. 4. Begin by placing the tallest branches firmly down into the soil in the center of the container. Gradually build out with the other pieces towards the edge of the pot. 5. Add accents such as pine cones, berries and dogwood sticks. 6. Water well, so branches, etc. will eventually freeze in place. 7. Sit back and enjoy your pot all winter long.

“THE STORYTELLER” IT’S A WRAP! Writer / Kara Kavensky Photography provided by Nancy Crump & Alexandra Reibel

After college, Joe Crump worked in Los Angeles as a grip. “A grip works with everything that has to do with lighting that isn't plugged in,” says Joe. He manipulated the lighting by hanging screens and rigging the lights in creative ways to achieve a desired effect. Grips also move the camera during the shot to maintain the lighting effect. While working in LA, Joe met Nancy. To provide a higher standard of living for his family, Joe got into real estate. The couple eventually moved to Indianapolis where Joe grew up. With his sister, Kristina Wagner, playing Felicia on “General Hospital” for over two decades, he was never far removed from the industry he loved. But it was not until Kristina reached out a few years ago to share her thesis on German internment in the U.S. during WWII that he decided it was time to wade back into the waters of production. A few years ago, Joe and Kristina converted her thesis into the documentary, “Children of Internment,” which won several awards at film festivals both in the U.S. and Europe and was picked up by PBS. With “The Storyteller,” Joe and Nancy have taken a deeper dive, and this time, it’s a narrative film.

Nancy’s combined experiences in management, as a script reader, as an industry make-up artist and at an independent film company were very helpful in her role co-producing this film. She wrote the lyrics to their original 36 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2016 / atFishers.com

With a tight three-week filming schedule, the scenes were meticulously planned with regard to progression of the film. The costumer designer kept track of the costumes for each scene, thoroughly understanding the progression of characters and where the scene fell sequentially within the film. Due to efficiency, oftentimes opening and closing scenes were filmed in the same day with significant adjustments needed accordingly.

“Joe really wanted the wardrobe to be a part of the story and show the transitions and growth each character made, which was a really unique and rewarding experience for me,” shares Costume Designer Cara Indiano. “It was a bit of a tight rope walk, and I really had to think about each individual piece. I can't thank Joe, Nancy and Rachel enough for giving me the opportunity to be a part of it and for trusting me with such an important part of their really incredible film.” “Everyone who worked on this film stepped up and did a great job with every single one of them doing their part, which is critical for it all to come together,” adds Nancy. “The actors gave us unbelievable performances,” says Joe. He is wrapping up postproduction on the film which utilized locations around Fishers and Noblesville and featured a cast rich in talent and experience.

“One of our stars, the incredible Constance Towers starred with John Wayne and William Holden in ‘The Horse Soldiers’ back in the golden era of Hollywood. She is truly Hollywood royalty and as nice a person as you'll ever meet. I had the honor of spending some time with her between takes, talking about that movie and what it was like to work with Wayne and Holden,” says Bud. “We talked at length about some of the other amazing films she and her husband John Gavin, another Hollywood great, had been a part of. For a movie buff like myself, it was heaven, and I won't soon forget it. I think everyone has mileposts in their life, events that stay with you that you can look back on with pride. The production of ‘The Storyteller’ will be one of mine.”

the first readings for the movie in LA and was the first one cast. It was later discovered that she was a former foster kid and adopted. She has started a nonprofit called Love Gives Chances to help foster kids who have outgrown the system but who could still benefit from a loving family. “In a world of negativity and violence, we’ve created a film depicting a compassionate connection for others,” shares Joe. “We do address foster care and mortality. There are moral issues as well, but in a sense, we are the rebels in the film industry. It’s funny to think a movie about healing, love, compassion and helping one another is rebellious, but it is.”

The movie covers many different themes, including foster care, complex interpersonal relationships and beliefs.

They accomplished this with a great script, which attracted an incredible cast and crew. They may call themselves rebels, but they are artists, and their medium is love.
