offer to serve in the Fall Creek Township Board seat,” said Board member Katrina Hockemeyer. “The selection process was extensive and involved two rounds of interviews. Howard Stevenson’s experience in his profession and as an HSE parent brings relevant knowledge and valuable perspective that will lend itself well to the ongoing work of the Board.” Stevenson sees the district’s greatest challenge as “continuing to provide teachers and administrators with the tools and resources they need to ensure the success of all of our students in a fast growing, diverse school district despite receiving a reduction in school funding.” He feels other important issues are maintaining effective class sizes and narrowing the gap between minority students and the general student body. He believes Board members “should have the best interest of the students as the primary focal point. All votes rendered and policies and procedures implemented should pass the test of ‘how does this benefit or advance the cause of our students?’”
HSE BOARD SELECTS STEVENSON TO FILL FALL CREEK TOWNSHIP SEAT Writer/ Fishers Community Newsletter
At its January 13th board meeting, The Hamilton Southeastern Board of School Trustees appointed Attorney Howard L. Stevenson to represent Fall Creek Township. Stevenson has lived in the community 15 years with his wife Christa and three sons. In his application, he said, “I am a strong proponent of public education and I want to use my efforts to champion the cause of public education. All of my educational pursuits have been in the public school arena
starting with my elementary school days and continuing through law school.” He has his B.A. from Indiana University and his J.D. degree from Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis. He is currently managing partner of the law firm Coleman Stevenson, LLP, and concentrates his practice in the areas of business law, real estate, civil litigation and municipal finance. “We were fortunate to have 35 highly qualified individuals come forward and 6 / FISHERS / FEBRUARY 2014 / atFishers.com

He sees Board members as liaisons, and they should engage and solicit information and insight from the community members. “Service on the school board is a vital component for a successful school district. It takes a collaborative effort from teachers, parents, board members, administrators, students and community stakeholders,” said Stevenson. “When they are effectively working together, there is no limit to the students’ success.” His other board/committee experiences include serving as superintendent of Sunday Church School for Eastern Star Church, on the Board of Directors for HSE Youth Basketball, on the Board of Managers for the YMCA, Ransburg Branch in Indianapolis, and as general counsel for the Indiana Stadium & Convention Building Authority in Indianapolis. Previously he was managing attorney for the Indiana Dept. of Transportation, general counsel for Indiana Family and Social Services Administration and section chief for the Office of the Attorney General of Indiana.

Notice something different about this month’s Fishers Community Newsletter? Perhaps the new “FISHERS” logo on the cover, more white space and bigger photos struck your fancy. Well, if you noticed any or all of these changes, you deserve a little background as to why we overhauled the Geist area’s most-read monthly publication.

JOHN DICK III TRAIN MODEL GUY
As many of you know, we launched the Geist Community Newsletter 10 years ago as a photocopied black-and-white newsletter that was mailed to just over 2,600 Geist residents. Since that time, we’ve expanded the distribution, enhanced the quality and reinvested our time and money back into making the publication the voice of all that’s right with our community. Today we have six monthly publications (Geist, Fishers, Carmel, Zionsville, Lawrence and Center Grove) around
Each page now has more white space around the copy and photos, again giving the pages a more elegant and refined look. This also helps readability and looks less cluttered.

Indianapolis with another three (Broad Ripple, Noblesville and Morse Reservoir) launching next month. This growing family of publications is now defined as the “TownePost Media Network,” which is now on the cover. Why are we expanding so quickly while traditional media outlets are shrinking? Because people want more local good news. To that end, we wanted to update the newsletters to reflect the upscale nature of our readers and neighborhoods that we serve each month. While most of the changes are subtle, others are a little more pronounced. Here’s a cheat sheet of the upgrades we introduced with this month’s issue: 8 / FISHERS / FEBRUARY 2014 / atFishers.com

Mary Phillips with Gigi’s Cupcakes and Sheri Miller with Planet Adventure have teamed up to host a 5K race the weekend before Valentine’s Day, Feb. 8.
TREAT YOURSELF TO THE ‘RUN 4 LOVE’ Writer / Chrissy Kenney
Winter can be a gloomy time, even for those who are head over heels in love with their significant others. Throw in Valentine’s Day, arguably the most hated holiday by singles across the nation, and mid-February can feel downright icy with frustration. Planet Adventure, an organization out of Fishers that hosts a variety of road races, is determined to make Feb. 8, the Saturday before Valentine’s Day, a day all Hoosiers can enjoy, whether they are single, coupled or in between. The Run 4 Love 5K is scheduled to kick off at 9 a.m., starting in Billericay Park, 12690 Promise Rd. in Fishers. This 5K event, in its first year, is designed to get locals active despite the cold weather. “We’re just trying to get people out and help meet their New Year’s resolutions,” said Sherri Miller of Planet Adventure. And, you never know — participants could also meet the love of their life. When participants register online at Run4Love5K.com, they select a specific
category in which they fall. The list includes the following categories:

Puppy Love (I’m Dating, Watch Out) Too Young to Care (Male) Too Young to Care (Female)
17 AND OVER
Love ‘em or Leave ’em (… It’s Complicated) Hands Off! (I’m With Him/Her) Single and Looking (Male) Single and Looking (Female) But according to Miller, this event isn’t totally about meeting potential romantic partners or celebrating your significant other. Every participant should feel sweet on something — a cupcake, that is! Gigi’s Cupcakes has generously agreed to donate treats for the event. At the 1.5 mile marker, runners can stop for a water break and enjoy a mini cupcake. But the real award comes atFishers.com / FEBRUARY 2014 / FISHERS / 9
when runners cross the finish line. Not only will they earn a medal, but they will also receive a famously large gourmet cupcakes from Gigi’s. “We wanted to correlate the sweetness of love with the sweetness of having something sweet to eat,” Miller said. If a cupcake isn’t enough to convince you to participate, here’s something else to feel good about: The Run 4 Love 5K shares part of its proceeds with the Hamilton County Humane Society. Donations will go toward food and blankets for the animals, Miller said. Those who are interested can register at Run4Love5K.com. You don’t have to “love” running to participate in this event. Walkers are also welcome. The cost of registration for adults varies between $40 and $45 and between $35 and $40 for youths, with the price increasing as the event gets closer. Registration is open online until Feb. 6. Gigi’s Cupcakes will be hosting a “pack and pickup” on Friday, Feb. 7, where runners can come and pick up their numbers. People can register at this event or on the day of the race, too, from 7:45 to 8:45 a.m.

GEIST & FISHERS GET ROMANTIC
where to dine with your valentine Writer / Anne E. O’Connor Photography / Carly Lyon
Valentine’s Day might mean cards and gifts of candy and flowers, but for many it is a day to enjoy a romantic meal. The holiday of love has roots in an ancient Roman fertility festival. In the Middle Ages this old tradition merged with stories of different saints named Valentine, and a new holiday was born. Whether you are planning to celebrate with a candlelit dinner for two, a meal with the kids or by taking a stash of sweet baked goods home, you can feast in style, right here in Geist and Fishers.

ROMANCE 65 YEARS IN THE MAKING Sweethearts Bob Albright and Joy Brindle are reunited and spend their first Valentine’s Day together in 65 years.
stop thinking about her since our first meeting because our last names are similar.” Bob added, “I don’t know if she is alive or dead, but I need to find out and ask for forgiveness.” My first question was, “What did you do that needs forgiving?” His answer: He only wished to ask forgiveness for breaking her heart.
Writer / Kara Reibel
Bob Albright and Joy Brindle first met back in 1943. Joy worked at the soda fountain where Bob’s dad was a pharmacist. Bob, who is five years older than Joy, had been out of high school and was preparing to serve his country. Joy was the only one, other than Bob’s parents, who wrote to him while he was overseas. Bob served in the Army as a combat photographer (see atGeist.com archives for July 2013 issue for his WWII story) and claims it was the letters from back home that truly helped morale. Once back from the Pacific theater, Bob and Joy dated for two years. She was finishing high school when he returned from the war and Bob attended her Tech HS senior prom. Joy was to attend Indiana University, where she majored in education. Bob began working for the Eli Lilly clinic as its first professional photographer. Being in two different worlds, it was challenging for Bob to maintain a long-distance relationship, and one day during the fall of Joy’s sophomore year at IU, the letters stopped coming. “He broke my heart,” said Joy of Bob’s end to their relationship. But Joy continued her studies, where she met her husband, Richard, whom she was married to for 50 years. In April 2013, I had the privilege of interviewing Bob for the July Geist Community Newsletter article. Upon my second visit to his home for clarification of details for his article, Bob announced that he “missed out on marrying the love of his life, and he couldn’t

Bob is now 90 years old and has macular degeneration. Upon getting as many of the details about Joy as Bob could share, I set out to find her. Thanks to the Internet and some divine intervention, the task was relatively easy. Both are widowed and live in the same city, which helped the logistics of their reconciliation. Upon given Joy’s phone number, Bob called her almost immediately. His first words after all these years were, “Joy, this is Bob Albright. Don’t hang up!” It didn’t immediately register with Joy who was calling her, so she asked for clarification: “Who is this?” When Bob repeated his name, Joy, who had been standing by her phone, quickly sat down. “It was quite a shock,” says Joy. “To hear his voice after all these years, I just couldn’t believe it.” After the call, it wasn’t long before Joy drove over to Bob’s to meet him after all these years. “It was like we had never been apart,” says Joy. “We just talk forever and are having the best time,” adds Bob. The love story continues. Joy still has a ring that Bob gave her 65 years ago on Valentine’s Day. The couple are now engaged and living together. “I’m 90 years old!” says Bob. “I know who I want to spend the rest of my life with.”

FISHERS ON TAP
FEBRUARY 22, 4:00–7:00 P.M. FORUM CONFERENCE AND EVENT CENTER / 11313 USA PARKWAY, FISHERS Writer / Clark Edwards
As we head into the gray days of winter, many of us are looking for a reason to get out and about. Well, I have an event for you to consider: Fishers On Tap — Winter. I recently sat down with Bill Jerrow and Michele Whelchel, the co-chairs for the Fishers On Tap Indiana craft beer-tasting
fundraiser, and discovered that the event is much more than an excuse to try some great local beers. In addition to sampling beer from local breweries, attendees can enjoy food samples provided by some local restaurants, including a dessert booth featuring mini cupcakes. Live music will be provided by Phoebe and the Mojo Makers. There will also be a 50-50 raffle and home brewing demonstrations.
Fishers On Tap is not your typical beertasting event and is sought after by the breweries for the quality time and conversations they are able to have with local craft beer enthusiasts. But the real winners from this event will be the local charities serving children who will be the beneficiaries of this fundraiser.
Fishers On Tap is brought to you by the Fishers Rotary Club, which comprises 116 men and women who believe in service above self. Since the inception of the club in 1992, members have raised and donated more than $670,000 to more than 85 nonprofit organizations and given an untold number of volunteer service man-hours. Some of the Fishers Rotary projects include: • Kids Voice: serving at-risk children • Pink Ribbon Connection: breast cancer support • Promising Futures: anger management for youth • Girls on the Run: adolescent girls’ self-image • Hear Indiana: hearing-challenged resources • Youth Mentoring Initiative: one-on-one help • Fishers Liberty Plaza: celebrating our veterans • Prevail: victims of crime and domestic abuse • Fishers Fire Department • Brooks Place: grief counseling for youth • Ambassador House: local historical residence • College Scholarships: HSE and Fishers high schools • Shelter Box: disaster relief shelters • Fresh Starts: domestic violence survivors • Partners in Housing Development • Servants at Work: wheelchair ramp building • Alzheimer’s Association
“ We always look forward to the Fishers On Tap events because they do such a great job of combining craft beer, local food options and entertainment into a communitybased event.” —Shane Pearson, Daredevil Brewing Co.

he Fishers Arts Council is the leading art and creativity organization for Fishers. Established in 2005, this nonprofit organization’s goal is to strengthen local arts and culture to enrich the quality and economic vitality of life in Fishers. The benefits of the arts to community life are numerous, and the Fishers Arts Council is working hard to advance community support for arts programs. President Jocelyn Vare explains, “The Fishers Arts Council identifies new arts opportunities and glues creative people, organizations, businesses and volunteers together to bring those opportunities to life in Fishers.” There are many upcoming initiatives for the Fishers Arts Council in 2014. Though this isn’t a comprehensive account of events, Jocelyn gave our readers the inside scoop on new and returning arts events in Fishers. All disciplines of art are supported by the Fishers Arts Council with a focus on encouraging participation in and providing access to the arts for all.
Farmers Market. The new date puts Art in the Park as a feature event of Fishers’ Nickel Plate Arts Weekend, and it will be located adjacent to the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater. In addition to the date change, for the first time, the event will be presented by the Fishers Renaissance Faire, an organization that will also contribute to the stage and strolling performances. The collaboration between the Fishers Arts Council and Fishers Renaissance Faire will add a new layer of entertainment to this already enriching community event. Artists and performers wishing to participate in Art in the Park can watch for a Call for Artists to be released in the near future. Follow the Fishers Arts Council on Facebook at Facebook.com/ FishersArt for up-to-date information.
SISTER CITIES ART EXCHANGE
The Sister Cities Association of Fishers develops long-term relationships and partnerships with Fishers’ sister cities around the world. Presentation to Town Council
This art exchange is scheduled to continue every other month during the school year. In addition to the crowd-favorite Fishers Renaissance Faire event held in October each year, the Sister Cities Association will partner with the Fishers Arts Council for the annual Art Walk festival in Billericay. Brian Brosmer, a Fishers photographer and artist, will be submitting his work to be exhibited in England in July.
ART IN TOWN HALL Partnering together, the Fishers Arts Council and the Town of Fishers opened the first municipal art gallery in Fishers in 2012. New art exhibits are featured every other month and have included the Indiana Artists Club’s annual stateside show, local professionals, new artists and students. The 2014 Town Hall exhibits will include a Fishers resident’s retrospective of his mother’s work, a mixed media artist, an urban art show, K-8 students’ Fishers Freedom Festival T-shirt designs and the annual Senior Art Showcase of HSEHS and FHS students. Fishers artists who would like to exhibit at Art in Town Hall can contact Lisa Sirkin Vielee at lisa@graciecomm.com or send a message via the Fishers Arts Council Facebook page at Facebook.com/FishersArt.
PUBLIC ART The Fishers Community Art Master Plan was unanimously endorsed by the Fishers Town Council on Dec. 16, 2013, establishing a long-term vision and procedures for the thoughtful placement of public art in the Fishers community. The plan was developed jointly by the Fishers Arts Council, the Fishers Cultural Tourism Group and the Town of Fishers. This collaboration is the first of its kind in Hamilton County, and a request for proposals will be shared with the community as projects are identified in 2014 during the implementation phase of selecting sites, projects and artists. The first site for new public art will likely include the Nickel Plate District, the Pocket Park on 116th Street and various community trails. More information about public art and the Fishers Community Art Master Plan can be found at fishers.in.us in the Culture & Recreation section.
Anya Simpson and DeMaris Gaunt. They want Fishers residents to be able to enjoy quality art within our own community, so planning and research has begun to develop The Artist Hub. “The Artist Hub is dedicated to cultivating the love of arts in people of all ages and abilities. The hub will nurture the renaissance of arts throughout the community in a noncompetitive and creative atmosphere,” envisions Simpson and Gaunt. They strongly believe that by establishing a shared space of galleries and studios for local artists, the hub can help Fishers become a destination location. A model similar to that of the Stutz building in downtown Indianapolis is being researched due to the high interest from the artist community. Fishers residents are asked to participate in the information-gathering stage to help gauge the needs of the community for a creative space to engage in art. Please take a moment to complete the online survey at fishersartsurvey.com, available until Feb. 28. Residents interested in this project can contact artisthubfishers@gmail.com for more information.

FUTURE OF FISHERS ARTS COUNCIL A few months ago, four new board members joined the Fishers Arts Council, and new committees will be forming this year. Development of initiatives to increase opportunities for writing and performance arts are underway. In addition, more partnerships with other groups will strengthen and broaden the arts in Fishers. One partnership is that with Fishers Music Works, a new music organization of several different professional and semi-professional ensembles that perform at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater and other Fishers locations. Fishers Arts Council representatives will be involved with planning and economic development for the Town of Fishers. Community members interested in participating in the Fishers Arts Council are encouraged to send a message to board members through the Facebook page at Facebook.com/FishersArt.

CAMP SIGN UPS: FISHERS PARKS & RECREATION
KEEPING STUDENTS ON TRACK BY STARTING EARLY AND PERSISTING Writer / Debra Legg
With the school year half over, it’s the time of year when parents start getting concerned. How do you find out if your child is on track and how to get him or her rerouted if there are issues? We asked three local experts: Leta Echelbarger, principal of Damar Charter Academy; Arjumand Azeem, owner of the Fishers East Kumon Center; and Lynne McCauley, director of the Indianapolis Northeast LearningRx Cognitive Training Center. Here’s what they had to say.
I’D RATHER NOT WAIT AND FIND OUT AT MIDTERM IF THERE’S A PROBLEM. HOW DO I HEAD OFF TROUBLE?
Most schools have Internet-based systems that let parents see grades as soon as they’re entered. In the Hamilton Southeastern Schools District, that system is Skyward
Family Access. To log on, click on the “Skyward/Family Access” link at the top of the home page: hse.k12.in.us. Echelbarger suggests also establishing communications with teachers. Email or call if you have questions. Many teachers send regular newsletters, blog or use Facebook pages. Make sure you’re aware of any such resources.
MY KID DOESN’T REMEMBER TO BRING THINGS HOME. IS THERE ANY WAY TO CHECK?
If you’re in the Hamilton Southeastern District, set up an account on Blackboard — this is in addition to your Skyward account — by going to blackboard.hse.k12.in.us. Teachers post everything from study guides to spelling lists on the site, virtually eliminating “I forgot” as an excuse. Blackboard also comes in handy if a student is going to miss school for more than a day or so.
ABA: 317-856-5201
ALL THIS TRACKING IS TIMECONSUMING. HOW DO I TEACH MY KID TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR HIMSELF?
The best way to teach responsibility is to require it. You’ll have to set up the system; for example, Echelbarger recommends buying a planner for kids who routinely forget homework. Require them to log assignments and get teachers’ signatures each day. A few weeks of the routine and most students will have the habit down pat. If there’s a relapse, re-implement the system.
HOW DO I KNOW IF MY CHILD NEEDS EXTRA HELP?
One of the best indicators is if she’s not doing grade-level work, Azeem said. Other signs are procrastination, withdrawing and acting out, McCauley added. Most of all, though, trust your gut, particularly if incentives or punishments aren’t working.
“You know your kid, and you know when something isn’t right. If they are getting quality instruction, adequate touches to master and they are still struggling, then it is time to look at their underlying cognitive skill, or the brain’s ability to handle the work load” McCauley said.
SITTING DOWN WITH A BOOK OR PAPER IS A CHORE FOR MY CHILD. WE’RE WORKING ON IT, BUT HOW Determine whether your child simply hasn’t DO I KEEP HIM LEARNING IN THE mastered the skills — that’s an area where MEANTIME? tutoring may help. If he grasps the facts but struggles with putting it all together, training in learning processes, such as the Kumon program, might help. If neither of these work, it’s time to consider whether it’s a matter of getting the mental computer running more smoothly — that’s where programs such as LearningRx come in.
Kindergarten isn’t too early, Azeem said. “The gaps just get bigger and bigger the higher the grade,” McCauley agrees. “I see kids in high school who are behind, and if you look at their record, this has been going on since grade school. The sooner you get to them, the less you lose in terms of opportunity cost along the way.” School seems more complicated today than “reading, writing and ’rithmetic.” How can I tell what’s really important? It’s still “reading, writing and ’rithmetic.” A kid who doesn’t learn to subtract now can’t 32 / FISHERS / FEBRUARY 2014 / atFishers.com

do long division later, Azeem said. Reading mastery also is key, because students who are stumbling early on will struggle even more as the workload and complexity increase in later grades, McCauley added.
Look for activities that are so fun that he won’t know he’s learning. Karaoke, for example, is a great way to boost reading skills as the words flash across the screen, Echelbarger said. At Damar, the school has a kitchen, and students are responsible for creating menus and planning budgets, she added. It’s a great way to teach life as well as academic skills.
MY KID’S GRADES ARE GREAT ON HOMEWORK BUT NOT SO HOT ON TESTS. WHAT’S GOING ON?
For many kids, homework is easier, McCauley said. The books are at hand, and there’s a parent to help. When it comes time to recall the information on a test, it’s harder to dig back into the mental filing cabinet and find it. Sometimes the problem is just test anxiety, but it also can be a sign that the complexity of the work to be done is greater than the “fitness level of the brain to handle it.” This is not as scary as it sounds, she added, because the brain, just like the muscles, responds to training. atFishers.com / FEBRUARY 2014 / FISHERS / 33
My kid rocks the tests but goofs up routine assignments. How can this be? It could be that the daily work isn’t challenging enough, but when it’s game day, she’s ready to perform, McCauley said. While in one way it’s a good problem to have, you can’t let this go on lest the lack of attention to detail becomes a habit.
MY KID IS IN DANGER OF FAILING. IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO AT THIS POINT IN THE YEAR?
Most teachers are receptive if the student is willing to either make up missed work or master the material. It never hurts to ask, “What does he need to do to pass?” Make older students responsible for making the inquiry, Echelbarger said. Doing so will demonstrate to the teacher that the student is committed to doing the quality work necessary to earn the grade.

ROTARY CLUB PROVIDES SHELTER BOXES Writer / Marcy Vigren
When a disaster hits an area, kind citizens around the globe donate money and time to help feed and medicate those affected, but it wasn’t until 1999 when U.K. Rotarian Tom Henderson saw the need for proper shelter and launched ShelterBox to fill that void. What is ShelterBox? It is an organization that provides large, heavy plastic storage tubs full of shelter survival items to people displaced by natural disasters or inhumane living conditions. Each box provides a family of 10 shelter, warmth, protection, self-sufficiency and even a children’s craft pack. At the heart of each green storage container is a heavy-duty tent that can withstand extreme temperatures, rain and 100 mph winds. Also included are thermal blankets, insulated ground sheets, mosquito

Todd Cartmel & The Painting Edge Team working on a home’s interior.
THE PAINTING EDGE Writers / J. Andy Murphy and Debra Legg
Headquarters: Carmel 317-846-1107 tcartmel@thepaintingedge.com thepaintingedge.com
Whether you’re seeing your family room repainted in sunshine yellow or want to spruce up the living room before putting your home on the market, The Painting Edge can get the job done on time and within your budget.
Todd Cartmel & The Painting Edge Team working on a home’s interior.
And thanks to the advances in the science behind the paint itself, the work can be completed more quickly and with less hassles than was possible a generation ago, when owner Todd Cartmel founded the company. “Paint technology has come a very long way since I first started my company 18 years ago,” Todd said. “Oil-based paint then was considered the best for both interior and exterior painting. Latex/acrylic paint kept getting better and better, and eventually oil paint became a dinosaur because of the smell and slow dry times. It was finally banned because it was found harmful for the environment by government agencies. Acrylics today are amazing, both on the interior and exterior of the home. Today, I can guarantee that an interior and exterior painting job will last eight to 10 years. Amazing technology in the industry has made this possible,” he said. Todd Cartmel started in the industry by accident, when he was in high school and found a job with a local company willing to give hard-working teens a chance. By the time he was a student at Indiana University, majoring in business entrepreneurship, he was supervising a four-person crew.
TIPS FROM TH
“It gave me insight and experience that eventually allowed me to take the plunge into starting my own company [The Painting Edge] with the support of my father,” Todd said. The Painting Edge will actually begin working for you even before the painters step foot in the home, helping with color and product selection. The in-home consultation is free. During the consultation, Todd will ask questions: What kind of mood are you trying to create? What colors fit the home and family’s lifestyle?

DOLLARS FOR SENIORS ‘DOLLARS FOR SENIORS’ FUNDRAISER TO HELP 125 COLLEGE-BOUND STUDENTS
Writer / Matt Quinn
If your patience for telemarketers is slim like mine, you need to read this article! The Hamilton Southeastern Schools Foundation is asking you to take that phone call from that unlisted number. For the 11th consecutive year, the foundation is sponsoring the “Dollars for Seniors” fundraising campaign, which supports college-bound seniors. Seniors from both HSE and FHS who were interested in participating in the program entered their names into a lottery system. One hundred twenty-five students picked from the group will start placing inbound calls requesting donations from residents and businesses within the HSE district. In 2013, more than $40,000 in scholarships were awarded to Hamilton Southeastern High School and Fishers High School students participating in the program. John DeLucia, a loyal HSE supporter, is partial to the program because “it’s helping the kids that have made a decision to help themselves.” This program is somewhat unique in that all the money collected will be tallied, and scholarships will be awarded to the 125 participating students at the end of their senior year. One appreciative recipient of a Dollars for Seniors scholarship is Matt Van Hoozen, a 2013 Fishers High School graduate. Matt is currently a freshman at Ball State University and member of the Cardinals football team. Matt, who lost his dad during his senior year of high school, says the Dollars for Seniors scholarship was a great help to him. “The money went right into my Bursar account, and I used it toward my tuition,” he says. “Every little bit of money you can get for college really helps out!”
So if you happen to receive a phone call from an unknown number and you hear a slightly younger voice than usual, I would encourage you to be a little more receptive than normal. It’s not a random telemarketer from overseas; it is probably your neighbor’s child or your friend’s kid being proactive and raising scholarship money for the next phase of his or her learning. Students will be placing calls Feb. 4-6 and Feb. 10-12. Your taxdeductible contribution will be used to directly help a fellow community member.
FATHER DAUGHTER SWEETHEART DANCE Writer / Laurie Quinn
Is your baby girl growing up too soon? Does the thought of her walking down the aisle bring you to tears? Now is the time while she is still little to make memories that will last her whole life through. And who knows — maybe you will even hear that special song that will become “your” song and dance to it at her wedding. Fishers Parks and Recreation will host a Father Daughter Sweetheart Dance for girls ages
5-12 and their dads on Wednesday, Feb. 12, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at The Mansion at Oak Hall, 5801 E. 116th St. in Carmel. Registration is required and due by Feb. 5. Attire is semiformal, and the cost is $8 for Fishers residents and $12 for nonresidents. Refreshments will be provided and a photographer will be on-site. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the event. Web registration is not available for this program. After your payment form is submitted, you can pick up your tickets Monday through
By the way, if you happen to wonder where your old cell phone goes when you decide to upgrade, the students are using them to make these calls. After February, you are welcome to handle that telemarketer however you see fit, that is until next year when the Dollars for Seniors program enters its 12th year.

Matt admits that calling strangers on the phone and asking for money was a little uncomfortable at first. To those on the receiving end of the calls, he says, “Give the student a chance! It’s such a good cause, and they’re not asking for much. Every donation — in any amount — truly makes a difference.”
Matt Quinn moved to Fishers in 2008 along with his wife and two children. Based on the family friendly lifestyle they determined that Fishers would be their permanent home. Matt graduated from Miami of Ohio and Xavier University and has grown multiple small businesses.

Overcoming multiple challenges along the way, Best Buddies Indiana was established in 2001, and Delaney served as its first board president.
BEST BUDDIES DARBY & MARINA
Originally founded by Anthony K. Shriver, the chairman of Best Buddies International, the organization was created in 1989 to foster one-to-one friendships between people with and without intellectual disabilities. Shriver is the son of the late Eunice Kennedy Shriver, the founder of the Special Olympics; the brother of Maria Shriver; and the nephew of the late John F. Kennedy. Under Shriver’s leadership, Best Buddies International is a vibrant organization that has grown from one original chapter to almost 1,700 middle school, high school and college chapters worldwide. Delaney spoke about the progress that the local office has made since its inception in 2001.
BEST BUDDIES GALA Writer / Janelle Morrison
Nearly 18 years ago, Mary Delaney was sitting at home watching the “The Today Show” with her infant daughter, Meghan, who has Down syndrome. It piqued Delaney’s interest when the show featured a promo for Best Buddies International, an organization that consists of volunteers who create opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. She called the national headquarters and subsequently connected with David Quilleon, now the senior vice president, Major Gifts, Mission & Operations, for Best Buddies International. The two conversed over a period of three years on how to establish an office and begin chapters in Indiana.
The first hurdle was to raise $100,000. Delaney was a board member for Down Syndrome Indiana along with Angela Touseull, who launched Indiana’s first Buddy Walk in the fall of 1998 that raised more than $30,000. The DSI board decided to donate, from its proceeds, the funds to host a fundraiser and raise the money needed to open a local Best Buddies office. The concept of a Black and White Ball was created, and that would become the primary annual fundraiser for Best Buddies of Indiana. Utilizing her resources and connections in the not-for-profit world, Delaney and her supporters raised $72,000 at their first gala, and Down Syndrome Indiana donated the remaining $28,000 to meet their goal. 40 / FISHERS / FEBRUARY 2014 / atFishers.com
“We started out by hiring a state director and one program manager, and that’s what we had for three years,” says Delaney. “We focused on hosting the gala as our predominant fundraiser. We were able to write grants, hired another program manager and opened more chapters. In the beginning, we were practically begging schools to open chapters, and today we have a waiting list. Best Buddies will not open new chapters until we have the proper resources and program directors in place.” Advocacy and awareness of the Best Buddies programs offered at the middle school, high school and college levels are ongoing initiatives for the local BBI board. “We are continuing to open middle school chapters along with the high school and college chapters that we started with,” Delaney stated. “Westfield, Zionsville and Carmel high schools were among the first high school chapters, and Indiana University was one of the first colleges to come on board.” Today there are more than 20 Indiana middle schools, nearly 50 high schools and 16 colleges that have active Best Buddies chapters. Since 1995, Best Buddies schools and colleges have paired students with intellectual and developmental disabilities in one-to-one

friendships with peer students. In the past, individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities have not had the opportunity to have friends outside of their own special education classroom. Best Buddies college programs also offer volunteers a unique opportunity to develop leadership skills. With the support of school faculty and Best Buddies staff, students with intellectual and developmental disabilities lead and direct the chapters in their schools. The 13th annual Best Buddies Indiana Black and White Ball will be held Saturday, March 1, at D’Amore, located on top of the Chase Tower in downtown Indianapolis. The ball raises funds to maintain and expand BBI’s existing programs and advocacy. Guests will experience a spectacular evening featuring live and silent auctions, a gourmet dinner, a complimentary martini bar, live entertainment and an opportunity to meet some inspiring Buddy Pairs and the incredible team of individuals who make up the Best Buddies of Indiana organization. For many, friendships in high school carry a high degree of significance. Having a best friend can literally shape your entire high school career. The program Best Buddies knows this to be true and has gone to great lengths to put this idea into action. The friendship between Marina Goodes and Darby Rumble are just one of the many great friendships inspired by this program. Darby, who turned 18 just a few weeks ago, met Marina in their high school, Hamilton Southeastern. After seeing Marina interact with Darby in one of their classes, their teacher suggested that they become “Best Buddies.” What I personally find interesting is their relationship outside of the program. Although the program sponsors weekly bowling trips and other events, Marina and Darby have created a very unique relationship outside of the program. It is undeniably obvious that these two girls have a relationship for which anyone would strive. They see each other daily at school and hang out five or six times a month outside of school. One of their favorite activities? Driving around while listening to music. Watching these girls interact makes me miss those goofy high school friendships — the ones where driving around town was a hilariously fun way to spend an afternoon. Marina and Darby have taken a relationship inspired by Best Buddies and turned it into something great.

GRATITUDE AND GIFTS Writer / Marcia Vigren
As the saying goes: a little kindness goes a long way. So does a little gratitude. The Fishers Department of Public Works does so much for our community, and this time, they did even more for a local boy who thought to write them a letter of thanks. Dominic DeWald, the oldest child of Ed and Rachel DeWald, lives in Fishers with his mom, dad, sister and brother. He is in 6th grade at Horizon Christian School and has brain damage and autism. “Dominic loves everything to do with trains, trucks and loves to point out, watch for and talk about all the various Fishers Department of Public Works vehicles,” wrote his mother in her letter accompanying Dominic’s. He also frequently writes letters to encourage others and show he cares. Dominic attended an open house for the Fishers DPW and felt inclined to write them a letter thanking them for keeping our streets clean and tidy and wishing God’s blessing on them and their families.
He hoped he’d hear back from them and that he did!!! Eric Pethtel, the Director of Fishers DPW, was touched by Dominic’s letter. He contacted Dominic’s mom to arrange a time to come meet Dominic in person. When he came to the house on December 23, he did not come alone. From inside the DeWald home, Dominic was eager for the visit: donning his construction vest from Home Depot and standing watch at the front door at the scheduled arrival time. One by one, 13 various Fishers DPW trucks rounded the cul-de-sac, passing by and then parking along the street. Dominic was scurrying to get his shoes on to go out and meet Eric Pethtel and Brad VanAlstyne, who were the first to walk toward the DeWald’s home. “What followed next was a Christmas miracle,” declared Dominic’s mom as tears of joy and humility ran down her face. Thirty-five employees of Fisher DPW exited their vehicles and gathered in a semi-circle at the bottom of the DeWald’s driveway. Dominic was presented with some gifts from the staff, which included an authentic 44 / FISHERS / FEBRUARY 2014 / atFishers.com
Fishers street sign with “Dominic DeWald Dr.” imprinted on it. Before the men left, Dominic had the opportunity to talk to the employees about their trucks and jobs… a huge smile affixed to his face. Probably the most meaningful present was a gift bag filled with 40 heartfelt cards and letters from the Fishers Department of Public Works employees, including stories of their families, offers to be pen pals, encouragement to “keep in touch” and even one stating: “I’m looking forward to seeing you, someday, working with us when you are older.” All were letters of thanks for the gratitude Dominic showed them. In an email to Rachel, Eric wrote, ”I had one staff member who wasn’t overly excited about the visit who later sent me an email stating the visit was pretty much the “coolest” thing he had ever done while working for Fishers.” So, see…thanks to a gracious boy and a kind-hearted group of employees, this whole exchange of giving produced an exponential amount of receiving!
Low Cost Spay and Neuter Clinic
Writer / Turner Edwards
Have you ever been driving or walking and seen dogs or cats that you can clearly tell have no home? You begin to think, “Oh, those poor animals,” but you don’t know what to do to help them. That’s why you need to have your cats and dogs spayed and neutered. It is National Spay and Neuter month in February. If you have a dog or cat that needs to be spayed or neutered, it is the right time to do it. Spaying and neutering are procedures where through surgery, cats and dogs can no longer reproduce. Now don’t think it’s to make cats and dogs extinct; it’s to control their large and rapidly growing population. A young female cat and her offspring can produce up to 420,000 cats in just seven years, while a female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 dogs in six years. Every year, six to eight million dogs and cats go into shelters, and only half that number get adopted. Low Cost Spay Neuter Clinic Inc. is a nonprofit organization that is trying to stop that from happening so every animal has a home, food, water and someone to love them. They offer low-cost spay
and neuter procedures so there are less stray animals and the shelters aren’t crowded with hundreds of animals. For male dogs to be neutered, it costs $30-$60, depending on weight. For a female dog to be spayed, it costs $35-$70, depending on weight. For a male cat to be neutered, it costs $25, and for a female cat to be spayed, it costs $30. The clinic also offers vaccines for dogs and cats, like rabies, and flea treatments. You can help by donating and having your cats and dogs spayed and neutered. They just opened a new location in Brownsburg and already have an existing location in Noblesville for easy access all across Hamilton County. They can also be accessed at their website, lowcostclinic.org. Please consider having your pets spayed and neutered. Turner is a student at HSJH. me wonder and become excited about a potential future in law. We The People [and the state competition] surely have given me a lot to think about, a wealth of knowledge and excitement towards the future!”
FHS We the People State Champions
FISHERS HIGH SCHOOL WINS WE THE PEOPLE STATE FINALS TWO HAMILTON SOUTHEASTERN SCHOOLS ARE FINALISTS Writer / Fishers Community Newsletter
Fishers High School won the Indiana Bar Foundation’s We The People State Finals, a state civic education competition, and will represent the state in the national competition. More than 600 teens and pre-teens versed in the U.S. Constitution competed in the finals Dec. 15-17 in Indianapolis. The teams from three schools scored highest according to panels of professional judges: 1. Fishers High School (FHS) 2. Munster High School, Munster, Ind. 3. Hamilton Southeastern High School, Fishers “Six thousand Indiana students are learning how to be good citizens through this educational model annually,” said Charles R. Dunlap, Executive Director of the Indiana Bar Foundation. “Indiana’s legal community is proud to bring this exemplary program here.” FHS Team Coach Liz Paternoster said, “This could not have happened to a better
group of kids! They are incredibly hard workers, and each student is extremely talented. We did our best in the final round which counts for 50 percent of the score, and that is what got us the state championship.” Nationals are in Washington, D.C., in April. Team members talked about highlights of the experience as being the strong family relationships they have developed along with the skills they have gained. Elliott Williams said, “In the past few months, this team has become family, and the state competition this weekend only reiterated that. The support from my teammates, our coach, advisers and the community is overwhelming….Hearing our school called up for first place was pure euphoria, and while the reality of it hasn’t fully set in, I’m so overjoyed to represent Team Indiana this spring.” Abigail M.J. Aylward said, “The program itself has taught me how to communicate my ideas in an intelligent way, a skill that cannot be understated! State has made 46 / FISHERS / FEBRUARY 2014 / atFishers.com
Aylward also cited Coach Paternoster as being an integral part of the team’s success. “She has surrounded us with support and with supporters [such as all of our unit advisors]. She has put so much of her time and herself into this program and into shaping all of us that I truly believe she deserves all the recognition here. I will always be grateful for her, my team and this opportunity.” Jake Jensen said, “Yesterday was the culmination of a lot of hard work. We were essentially an underdog team after the first two rounds, but we were able to band together to finish in first place. I came to realize how much trust I’ve built in not just my unit mates but the entire team. Going to Nationals is an exceedingly high honor, but being able to continue to study government and the Constitution with my teammates for another semester is even better. Civic education has never been more exciting; I’m looking forward to Nationals and getting back to work with my team.”

We The People is an educational model that teaches students in fifth, eighth and twelfth grades about the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights. After a semester of study about American history and constitutional philosophy, current events and applicable court cases, students testify in mock congressional hearings before panels of volunteer judges from the legal community.
From our family to yours...since 1932.
Teams mastering their subjects compete in competitions throughout Indiana’s nine congressional districts and finally at one state competition with representative teams from each district. The civic education model is one of the most effective for creating model citizens who vote at higher rates than their peers.
