At Home With Fishers’ City Councilwoman
CECILIA COBLE Writer / Kara Reibel . Photographer / Brian Brosmer
Fishers’ City Councilwoman Cecilia Coble proudly represents families with children and those living with disabilities. Cecilia and Mike Coble have called the Geist area home for the last 21 years. Mike is originally from Indianapolis, while Cecilia grew up mainly in Phoenix, Arizona. With her mom from Mexico and her dad, a retired FBI agent, Cecilia, her brother and sister were encouraged to discuss politics and solutions. The family made a point of staying connected to current events and social issues. Cecilia met her husband at the University of Arizona. After graduation, the couple married and moved to Indianapolis, both earning their law degrees from Indiana University’s Robert McKinney School of Law. After working in government relations for Bank One, Cecilia took time off to be a mom to their girls: Alexa, a competitive cheerleader and an eighth grader at HSE Jr. High, and Crysta, a fifth grader and also part of a cheer squad at Indiana Elite. When Crysta was 6 months old, Mike and Cecilia started noticing a delay in meeting certain developmental milestones. “We sought early intervention, going through First Steps as well as seeing specialists,” says Cecilia. “We were doing all the right things and it wasn’t helping.” The next few years, the Cobles sought answers for their daughter, Crysta. They worked with genetic counseling, a few developmental pediatricians, and even took Crysta to Mayo Clinic to no avail of a definitive diagnosis. It was not until Crysta was about 5-years-old that a local pediatrician in Indianapolis diagnosed her with autism. Devastated by the news, but also relieved because now they knew what they were dealing with, the Cobles quickly sought solutions to help their youngest daughter. “I am a warrior mom and a solution-driven person. I wanted to have no regrets,” states Cecilia, who continues to investigate all possible avenues to help Crysta. “One in 68 children have autism. It has exploded to epidemic proportions, yet parents must seek their own answers and solutions.” atFishers.com / JANUARY 2015 / FISHERS COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / 7
Upon exploring schools and learning centers for kids with autism, the Coble family discovered that they were fortunate to have several options for centers for children with autism nearby. Normal activities, such as a playground, were not initially handled with the normalcy one would expect from an active child. When Mike and Cecilia would take the girls to a park to play, Crysta would run in the opposite direction of the playground. This is not uncommon with autistic children. Finding areas that would allow Crysta to explore, without worrying about her running out into a parking lot or other potentially unsafe area, was a challenge. “Parenting a child with autism is a completely different ballgame than that of a normal child. Quickly, we found our hopes and dreams for Crysta changing, our goals for her changed, and we dealt with these changes,” said Cecilia. Within Hamilton County, Fishers has the highest concentration of families living with autism. During one of Cecilia’s late-night online information-seeking sessions, she discovered a group called TACA, Talk
About Curing autism. Founded in Orange County, California, it was formed by a group of parents, all coping with the complexities of autism. “The TACA organization helped us so much, providing us with so much information, I knew I had to share this locally,” states Cecilia. She reached out to TACA and became one of four coordinators for the Indiana chapter. TACA provides much-needed information and resources to families dealing with the challenges of autism. TACA chapters continue to grow all across the country. Made up of autism families helping autism families, their goal is to quickly aide families on to the right path for help. The services offered are desperately needed, for once a family receives a diagnosis, they are left to cope with autism mostly on their own. Having a child with autism can be physically and emotionally exhausting. The sleepless nights, fussy eating, and medical issues push parents to their limits. Fishers resident and TACA mom living with autism, Raina Schnaiter, said, “Autism has pushed me beyond my limits. It is through autism that I have learned I am limitless.”
TACA helps address important issues like sleep. Children with autism have diverging sleep patterns, and for many parents, it can be like having a newborn, only the phase can last indefinitely. Diet is another facet of autism. Studies have shown that autistic children perform better on gluten-free, casein-free diets. Many have other allergies or additional concerns, so diet changes are a high priority. The sleep suggestions and dietary suggestions help immensely, such as they did with Crysta. Crysta keeps plugging away, working on her milestones. She talks, which is a huge step in communication. She is now more engaging with others and although she has many more goals ahead of her, Crysta is working hard to achieve her fullest potential. “Every year we see the improvements she has made and we celebrate the small things, for with kids like Crysta, these are big things,” says Cecilia. Cecilia is passionate about helping others. This is clearly illustrated in her fundraising efforts to help families get connected to the resources that will best serve their child. Cecilia has taken charge of the fundraising wing of TACA. TACA and Answers for

autism collaborated for the second year in a row, putting on an Evening for Autism. This black-tie fundraiser was held in November, wrapping up a very busy week for Cecilia. She won her first public election, running for a Fishers City Council at-large seat, and culminated on Friday night with the Evening for Autism event.
enriched our lives,” shares Cecilia. "We are very blessed with what we have been given.” Mike echoes Cecilia’s sentiment, “We are a close family, and with us all working together to help Crysta has only brought us closer.”
TACA meetings are from 7-9 p.m. on the second Monday of the month at Launch Fishers. For additional information and to find out how you can help Talk About Curing Autism, visit TACAnow.org.
“It was quite the whirlwind week,” says Cecilia. It was also an exciting time for her husband, Mike. “It was exciting to go through the political campaign and election,” said Mike. “Everything Cecilia takes on, she gives 110 percent. When she first decided to run, I knew instinctively she would win. She will make an excellent councilwoman. We are so proud of her.” Cecilia is committed to using her position in part to help give voice to families with special needs. “During campaign, I met so many people who have a family member with a disability or a special needs child. They expressed their excitement that there was someone representing them on the City Council,” said Cecilia. “Fishers is a wonderful place to live, we have a bright future.”

Her childhood and her legal background, plus her experience as a parent has prepared Cecilia for her new role as councilwoman. “Growing up, we would have family dinners when we would talk politics, try to come up with solutions to the world’s issues,” recalls Cecilia.

FISHERS OPENS NEW PARK IN GEIST Writer / Pat Carlini
Fishers is set to open a new, one-of-s-kind destination park in the Geist area this spring. It’s called Flat Fork Creek Park and its located on what used to be 80 acres of farmland, at 101st and Cyntheanne Road, just east of Geist Reservoir.
This new, year-round adventure park features a 60-foot sledding hill, a zip line, a two-mile progressive mountain bike course, walking trails, fishing ponds and an elevated boardwalk that winds through tree houses — yes, tree houses! “We are very excited about this park,” says Fishers Parks and Recreation Director Tony Elliott. “I think it will be a great addition to
this community and a draw from all around including Lawrence, Pendleton, Carmel and Indianapolis.” The sledding hill is open now for the snow season as part of the first, 60-acre phase of the park. Another 20 acres will be green space used for reforestation efforts and will complete the park. A grand opening of the park is planned for spring. Elliott says one special feature of the park is that the sledding hill and boardwalk are wheel chair accessible; so much so that somebody in a wheel chair can see as much of the park as a child in a stroller. “Also the trails are a little different,” says Elliott. “Where most parks want you to stay on the trails so as not to damage nature, this park wants you to get off the trail and explore!” The park was a promise to Geist when it was annexed by Fishers and the town budgeted $3.5 million for the project. Elliott says officials saved some taxpayer money by inviting local developers to dump fill dirt at the park to build the sledding hill. “About 100,000 cubic feet of dirt was dumped on the site,” said Elliot. “It saved us buying dirt.” And what happens if we don’t get snow? “Good question! We looked into the cost of making snow like a ski resort,” says Elliot. “But not sure yet. We are also looking at additional lighting since it gets dark so early here in the winter.”

EDDY’S CELEBRATES Writer / Pat Carlini
Eddy’s neighborhood bar and grill is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Along with the anniversary celebration, the ownership of Eddy’s is changing hands. But no need for concern, the new owner is certainly no stranger to Eddy’s. Dave Stringer, known as the tall guy behind the bar, has been the manager of operations after Scott Foster purchased Eddy’s a little over eight
YEARS!
years ago. Now he will take over as owner, as Foster and his wife plan to spend a little more time at their place in Florida. “Its fantastic,” says Stringer about his new position. “We’ve been taking about doing this for a while now and finally we just decided now is the time.” Often referred to as the “Cheers” bar of Geist, Stringer says things will remain pretty much the same as they have been, under his direction.
atFishers.com / JANUARY 2015 / FISHERS COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / 15
Chef Kyle Cambridge will continue whipping up some of Eddy’s favorites in the kitchen such as the jalapeno chicken strips and the popular Eddy’s dip. A few more pasta dishes will be added for the winter menu as they have done in the past. Probably the biggest change is adding craft beers. “The craft beers are so popular now,” says Stringer. “More than half of the beers on tap are craft beers and I’m adding more canned craft beers, too.” The annual food drive spearheaded by Stringer for a downtown food pantry will continue, as well as the summer boatside delivery with the “crazy cart.” Also topping the list, the annual support of the Fourth of July Geist fireworks display will continue. “Its my entire advertising budget for the year,” laughs Stringer. “But, that’s the way its been. Eddy’s doesn’t do coupons or anything, we just let everyone know we are still here once a year by supporting the fireworks.” And that strategy may work for them since as of now, 80 percent of their clientele lives within 5 miles of the neighborhood bar and grill. Eddy’s is located at 11693 Fall Creek Road. Pat Carlini is an experienced television/radio personality associated with NBC in Indianapolis and the syndicated Bob & Tom Show. She can be contacted at patcarlini.com.
LOCAL RESIDENTS SHARE Memories “Six and a half years ago, the unthinkable happened. My nephew Scott, my brother’s only son, passed away in his sleep from a heart anomaly, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, that we never knew Scott had. My Scott had worked at Eddy’s for six years tending bar while finishing undergrad at IU and a dual master’s degree at IU. On the day of Scott’s funeral, Scott Foster and Dave Stringer showed up at my house with food for 200 plus. They knew that after the funeral my family, friends and all Scott’s friends would be coming to our house. Scott and Dave never asked for a thing and they never expected anything from us. They gave to my family – who was in so much pain it was hard to breathe – when we didn’t know what to do for ourselves. Scott and Dave fed our families, our friends and Scott’s friends. The late, great Maya Angelou put it succinctly: “People will forget what you said, they will forget what you did. But they will NEVER forget how you made them feel.” That was Scott and Dave. My family will NEVER forget the love from them when we were hurting the most. We love them all.”
- Patty Torr “Eddy’s has served as a wonderful gathering place through the years. When our kids were younger it served as a great place to go have a family dinner out.”
- State Senator Jim Merritt “IndySurviveOars hang out most Monday and Wednesday nights after practice during the season. Always taken well care of. We celebrate when it’s buffalo chicken soup night!”
- Leigh Ann Peercy “I want wish Eddy’s a happy 20th anniversary – truly a Geist landmark. As I recall during the annexation days we would meet mostly at IYC, however our second summer headquarters was right there on the patio of Eddy’s! Thank you Dave and Scott for serving the Geist residents for all these years. Here’s to the next 20!”
- Pete Peterson “Since the day they bought Eddy’s, they’ve set about improving it and immersing themselves in the community, Geist! Scott has always been quick to say yes, and do it humbly, as I’ve gone to his well many times, for many causes! Whether it’s supporting Geist Lake Coalition’s Fourth of July Fireworks, (long before the event it has become), to being the Title Sponsor for Blast on the Bridge, since it’s inception I might add! He’s always been a team player, giving in to others best interest rather than his own. Saying “yes” to St. Mary’s Child Center’s raffle tickets, donating generously to auctions, events and fundraisers, to putting up with the Geist Lake Coalition using Eddy’s patio as ground zero for many Geist Clean Up Days, on busy Saturdays to boot. Heather is a natural giver too, and jumped in feet first giving back as well, from wine tastings to golf outings benefiting her favorite charity. Bottom line they’ve run a fabulous neighborhood bar and grill, but unlike most, it’s been their vehicle to bring neighbors, friends and families together. I truly believe they’ve leveraged Eddy’s to benefit the community more than themselves, and far more than most! Yes, they’ve left a legacy behind and they’ll be missed, but they’ve found a way to continue being givers to Geist, through Dave Stringer, keeping another promise made long ago… Dave get’s it too, Eddy’s and the Foster’s legacy continues!”

ndianapolis metro communities are flled with history and historic buildings. In downtown Franklin, there is a building dating back to 1915 when it was an auto dealership. Afer time it fell into complete disrepair, but afer much work, the building received a national award for its restoration. In 2012, resident Cori Brown wanted to start a business and saw the old building, close to the courthouse, as an ideal location and an opportunity to breathe new life into the Johnson County seat. It took Cori and her husband Scot – owner of the Brown Remodeling Company – a year to bring the building back to life. Teir work received national recognition in November when Window & Door magazine, the authority on the most innovative and trending window and door products on the market, named Franklin Window & Door “2014 Dealer of the Year: Excellence in Showroom Design.” As a highlight of the downtown revitalization efort, Franklin Window and Door is a warm, welcoming and elegant space. “Restoring the building was no simple task,” Cori says. Reconstruction included raising the southwest corner of the building four inches. Te original pressed metal ceiling was uncovered and restored. Te interior restoration includes wooden beams from a local 1800s era barn and the entire front façade was rebricked. Window & Door quotes Krista Linke, the director of community development for the city of Franklin as saying, “What [Cori Brown] did with that building was just amazing. It was one of our worst buildings downtown. Tey basically rebuilt it and made it historically appropriate. It’s a great example of the kind of work we want to see take place.”

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM THE TOWNEPOST NETWORK Writer / Tom Britt
It’s hard to believe that just over 11 years ago, my daughter, Tory and I were stufng mailboxes in our neighborhood announcing the launch of atGeist.com. About eight months later, we mailed our frst Geist Community Newsleter to just over 2,500 homes. Today, our TownePost Network has expanded to nine hyper-local monthly newsleters and just over 130,000 homes in Central Indiana. Much of that growth has happened in the past three years and we’re poised to grow even more in 2015 as we start to franchise our concept.

MENTORING YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION IS HERE
Writer / Laurie Quinn
January is National Mentoring Month and in Fishers, this is a great month to pay homage to our own youth mentoring program called the Youth Mentoring Initiative, or YMI. YMI has over 7,300 hours of mentoring in schools since the Fall of 2008. By 2020, YMI wants to provide mentoring to 600 HSE students in grades five – 12. In honor of National Mentoring Month, let’s meet YMI’s longest running mentor – Shellie Law. Law has been a mentor for more than six years. Deciding on becoming a mentor was an easy choice for her. She had been searching for an avenue to reach out and make a difference in her community. Law recalls thinking YMI seemed like a great opportunity to reach youth in a structured setting. On the flip side, Law says she feels rewarded. “It gives me a chance to be around young adults who need me," she said. "It makes me feel connected like I can make a difference in today’s world!” She has actually made lifelong friendships because of being a mentor. She maintains a friendship with one of her first mentees. “It is rewarding to have watched her grow into the person she is today,” Law expressed. Law is employed by Crown Moving and Storage located in Castleton and has been an employee for 13 years. They have shown their support of Law’s decision to be a mentor by allowing her to time off during the work day to fulfill her one hour per week commitment to YMI. “These kids we meet with are the future adults for our community," said Law. "If they don’t have a positive role model to turn to, what kind of adults will they turn out to be?” For more information on YMI, visit ymionline.org or call 317-3709070. You too make a difference and New Year’s Resolution at the same time!

If you will be watching friends play, there is a place for you at the observation deck that is home to Toucan’s Tiki Hut. The bar features two large TVs for people to enjoy between games. Walter is especially excited about the new restaurant formerly known as Louie’s. This new space will have a stone wrap on the exterior façade and will serve the highest quality of food. Its new rebranded name will be announced in the spring. He says, “If you haven’t been to Pinheads for a while then you should come back in and check it out.”

f you’ve ever been to Pinheads Recreational Center in the past, then you probably recall how this bowling paradise catered mainly to kids, but not anymore. This new establishment focuses on “family” and “Mom and Dad” with its new agenda such as swapping the kids play area for a multipurpose banquet facility and introducing a “casual-upscale” wine and dine restaurant. Instead of primary colors, visitors will admire the cozy and rustic charm of the new décor. Although families may visit Pinheads to bowl a game or two, with all the changes of the current remodel, Mom and Dad may opt to get a babysitter to escape. They can now enjoy a relaxing dinner together or a splendid food tasting event paired with wine at Pinheads. Not a big wine drinker? Pinheads also supports local Indiana breweries with their craft beer selection.
“We pride ourselves in giving topnotch service to all of our customers,” says Kevin Walter, the chief operating officer of Pinheads. “When compared to similar facilities in greater Indianapolis, we’re No. 1 in customer service reviews. Out of over 700 Groupon reviews, we average 97 percent in customer satisfaction.” Pinheads doesn’t stop their service at games. They offer food made from scratch with two certified chefs onsite to oversee the kitchen. And don’t expect the typical nachos from a concession stand. Pinheads offers upscale pub food including fresh appetizers, hand-patted burgers and hand-stretched dough for pizza.
Pinheads provides open bowling on Fridays and Saturdays, featuring a DJ host and prize giveaways from 7 – 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday they offer league bowling after 5:30 p.m. For the budget-minded, you can bowl for only $1.00 per game after 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, excluding holiday breaks. Pinheads will host a Wine & Canvas event on Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day, complete with a chefprepared dinner for two. Register through wineandcanvas.com to reserve a spot. Susan Van Hoosen is a woman with a glow about her. A self-proclaimed hugger, she has a vibrancy and warmth that radiate from her and you can’t help but absorb some of it. It is hard to believe that her husband, Trent, passed away only two years ago, taking her down to her knees and forcing her to cope with the extreme grief.
atFishers.com / JANUARY 2015 / FISHERS COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / 31
KETTLE BELLS They had the relationship that many admired and wished for themselves. They both enjoyed exercising and clean eating as part of living a healthy lifestyle. Then the unimaginable happened when Trent suddenly died from a blood clot to his lung (Deep Vein Thrombosis, a hereditary disease), leaving Susan in shock. About a month after his death, she put her daughter on the bus and dragged herself to the basement to work out for the first time, since his passing. That was the first day that she didn’t cry since Trent’s passing. She tried going back to her corporate job of almost 12 years, but that lasted only two weeks. Susan realized she was being called to serve others through health and fitness. The idea began as her grief therapy and evolved into her new career. Inspired By Fitness was born. As soon as she became a Certified Personal Trainer, Susan already had her first two clients. After just two months, she had six clients. Within a year and a half, she also earned her CrossFit and TRX
Certifications and became an ACE Certified Health Coach. The client base continues to snowball just through word of mouth. “God sends me every person that comes here,” smiles Van Hoosen. Divine intervention sure seems to play a part in this business. Susan wanted her logo to be an elephant, not an animal famous for its muscular physique. She wanted it because of the mantra that Trent lived by when things got tough, “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” So, the day after telling a friend she was going to research images of elephants, she coincidentally received a picture of one in the mail from a friend at the Indianapolis Zoo. The elephant’s name was Sophie, Susan’s and Trent’s daughter’s name, and it was 46 years old – Trent’s age when he died. She was standing in front of a waterfall with her trunk in the air, which signifies happiness. Susan put the elephant’s likeness on a Bosu ball with a kettle bell in her trunk and a logo was born. Part of each client session is a lesson on nutrition, which, for most

TRX SUSPENSION people, is the hardest component of wellness. Susan helps her clients with food journals, menu planning and preparation tips. “It‘s more than just physical fitness,” she said. “I coach my clients on how to create a clean lifestyle they can sustain for a lifetime by practicing daily healthy habits and easing into lifestyle changes." Most of the clients are women and baby boomers. “It’s safe here,” smiles Susan. “They don’t have to worry about being watched, intimidated or what they look like.” Inspired By Fitness’s format includes working with clients one-onone, in pairs, small groups and corporate wellness programs. The stimulating, clean and comfortable garage and basement studios are full-time training spaces stocked with all the equipment you would ever need to get a great, fun workout including: TRX suspension training, rowers, kettle bells, battle ropes and Pilates rings, Dynamax Balls, Bosu Balls, etc. Each client session is customized and always varied focusing on functional movements and bodyweight resistance, targeting multiple muscle groups in each movement.
“I teach my clients that you don’t need an hour to get an effective, workout.” says Susan. “You can accomplish a lot in a half hour or 45 minutes once you learn how to use your body effectively.” Other than wanting to add more companies to help with their Wellness Programs, Susan’s goal is to continue to serve people to live the healthiest lives, and to love their bodies through clean eating and consistent movement. She has daily exercises and nutrition tips on her website, inspiredbyfitness.net, along with information about training, pricing and how to contact her. You can also read testimonials that might speak to your health and fitness needs.

LOCAL VOCALS, LOCAL FUN Writer / Julie Yates
What happens when three energetic moms combine their talents in a wish to contribute to their families but give back to the community at the same time? The result is Local Vocals Kids Choir whose mission is not only to teach children music skills, but offer an affordable and low commitment fun activity to the surrounding Fishers area. Local Vocals was developed by Fishers Residents Dory Ferland, Lisa Freeman and Stacy Stone and is open to children age seven to 12 who want to explore the experience of performing in a choir. The emphasis is on providing a positive atmosphere to build skills and confidence. Ferland has a background in voice, Freeman’s expertise is in instrumental music, and Stone has a paralegal degree. Their individual skills made such a strong whole, that they became business partners as well as friends. Volunteer Breakfast, and an end of the year concert. This spring the “We complement each other; our talents put together make us a group delighted students and parents of the school with a production great team,” said Frland. And Stone added, “And we have so much of “Annie Kids,” a scaled down version of the musical “Annie.” fun! We really enjoy each other, so the kids have a great time as well.” The idea for Local Vocals was hatched over the summer of 2014, but its roots actually began in the fall of 2010 when Stone convinced Ferland to co-lead a Girl Scout troop with her. Then in 2012, the idea came to Ferland to approach her daughter’s music teacher, Lisa Freeman, then at Sand Creek Elementary, and ask if she could volunteer in her classroom. Knowing that their two areas of music expertise would complement each other, Freeman happily accepted the offer. Together, they expanded music education outside of the classroom by offering an extracurricular choir, the Sand Creek Singers, to upper grade students who had an interest. The choral group met once a week before school and performed at Grandparents’ Day, the
In November of 2013, radio station B105.7 sponsored a contest to raise money for school music departments. Freeman and Ferland submitted a CD of the Sand Creek Singers, which was chosen as one of the top three finalists. The Sand Creek Elementary community rallied and after getting the most votes on the internet, the choral group was awarded $2,500. The money was used to buy new pieces for the school’s sound system. This past summer, Ferland and Freeland offered two music “camps” over the summer. Stone, who holds business and paralegal degrees offered an extra pair of hand during the camp productions since two of her daughters were enrolled in the camp. The response by parents and kids was so overwhelming that Local Vocal Kids Choir was born. While Local Vocal’s goal is main goal is for the choir’s participants to have a great time, it also strives to teach life skills such as the ability to perform in front of others as well as vocal technique. Giving back to the community is a large part as well. The choir has donated two “sponsorship” enrollments for the upcoming semester and has plans to spread their cheer by visiting local nursing homes. For information on enrolling, visit Local Vocals on Facebook.

HSE SENIORS PLAN FUNDRAISER TO CROWN MR. ROYAL
atFishers.com / JANUARY 2015 / FISHERS COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / 35
Writer / Kara Reibel Photographer / Meghan Lynch, Hamilton Southeastern Sceptre Yearbook
Hamilton Southeastern High School’s National Honor Society is celebrating the 13th annual Mr. Royal talent parody fundraiser. The fun commences on Jan. 29.
This mock talent show promises to be highly entertaining, with this year’s theme of “#TBT, Throw Back Thursday,” which gives a nod to the icons of the ’90s. Senior Chad Davis, VP of NHS, is chair of the production committee for Mr. Royal.
The student committees organize ticket sales, solicit donations, design the program, and help handle all details the day of the event to ensure a seamless production. There is a lot that goes on backstage and behind the scenes, much like a play or musical.
“Most fundraisers require someone to purchase a good or service or donate to a cause, but Mr. Royal gives people to opportunity to gain something from their donation,” says Davis. “I love how year after year people say it is one of the most hysterical, comedic events they have ever seen.” Typically, a dozen senior men sign up to participate. This year set a new record with 18 contestants. Each contestant will choose a ’90s icon to impersonate. There will also be talent portion and an interview portion. The funds raised by this event sponsor 40 families in the HSE district for Christmas, as well as pay for events during Teacher Appreciation week.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Teachers and sponsors Jill McGrath and Amy Shipley are excited for the competition. “It is so much fun!” says McGrath, “And it’s not just the drama kids who compete, these seniors are full of surprises.”
NOW ONLY 279! $
ORIGINAL PRICE $558
Besides the title of Mr. Royal, there are other titles to be won such as Mr. Talent, Mr. Dance, Mr. Entertainment, and Mr. ’90s. Competition is tight and the level of entertainment high.
New Clients Only. Offer Expires 1/31/15
And it is not just seniors competing. Emcees for the evening are seniors Hannah Conrad, Jessica Paris and Maddie Maloof. McGrath recommends buying your tickets for Mr. Royal early. “The event was close to being a sell-out last year, filling all but 50 seats in the Leonard Auditorium, so get your tickets soon!” Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door.

Resolutions can be dirty words in wellness. The connotation that comes with it is that they are short lived – that we make plans of grandeur and then fall short of our lofty goals and expectations. Make this year different. This year, make a plan simply to be resolute – to be determined. Do not expect to change the world, your body, or your health overnight. Find every day victories that lead to long term success and don’t give up. 1. RAINBOWS I bet you won’t forget that. Make sure to eat something colorful at each meal. I’m not talking about fruit loops or green ketchup (cringe). Yellow, green, red, orange, blue – each color correlates with different nutrient profiles. Make half your plate fresh fruits and vegetables.
6. LOOK TO THE RIGHT RESOURCES If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. There are no magic pills, no magic shakes. Eat right and exercise. Speak with your physician or a registered dietitian to develop a safe and effective wellness plan tailored to you!

2. STEP UP Take the stairs at least once a day. It doesn’t matter if it is six steps or six flights – every step counts. Don’t waste your time driving around stalking the perfect spot while shopping, go ahead and park out in the left field. Those extra distances can really add up! 3. HAVE FUN Yep. I said it. Have fun! If your regimen is not enjoyable and you are miserable every day, it will not be long lived. Make your health something you look forward to. Get a fitness tracker and challenge friends and family. Join a wellness club. Set your own goals and check them off one by one. Find something that works for you and stick with it! 4. DRINK UP It is easy to get dehydrated, no matter the season. Save yourself a couple bucks and trade the soda for a glass of water. The Institute of Medicine recommends ~ 9
5. CELEBRATE YOUR SUCCESSES Not every day can be a celebration, but give yourself a break when you hit a goal or a milestone. Take a deep breath, enjoy your
moment and look at how far you’ve come!
