4 Members of the Honor Guard at Liberty Plaza in downtown Fishers

Celebrate the Dedication of Liberty Plaza | Whitney Mucha Fishers residents are invited to celebrate the dedication of Liberty Plaza, located at 1 Municipal Drive in front of Fishers Town Hall, on July 7 at 1:00 p.m. A short ceremony will be conducted by Pete Pippen, chairman of the Liberty Plaza Task Force, and Town Council member, Scott Faultless. The Fishers Honor Guard will present the colors and Fishers Music Works, a local jazz band, will perform during the ceremony. Liberty Plaza construction began in 2008, and its completion marks the end of a five-year project to honor local and national public safety employees both past and present. This unique monument is the first in Fishers to honor veterans, and to serve as a tribute to all military, police, fire fighters, and first responders who help protect and serve all Americans. The outer circle of the monument pays tribute to the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Homeland Security, U.S. Coast Guard, Fishers Fire and Emergency Services, and Fishers Police. The tallest portion of the monument is 6

inscribed with “Proclaim Liberty Throughout All The Land Unto All The Inhabitants Thereof – Lev. XXV:X.” Liberty Plaza is visible from 116th Street at Municipal Drive, but visitors will best enjoy the details of this monument by viewing it in person. Parking is available at the Fishers Train Station. Several brick pavers surrounding the monument walkway have been engraved with messages from local families honoring their family and friends who are active, retired, or fallen military or public safety servants. Opportunities are still available to purchase personalized brick pavers for permanent placement at Liberty Plaza. Purchase one today while there are still open bricks. Contact the Fishers Chamber of Commerce at 317-578-0700 for more information. Come celebrate the dedication of this local monument honoring those who protect our freedoms. Whitney Mucha is a graduate of Indiana University,a native Hoosier, and HR professional. She and her husband Mike enjoy living in Fishers with their two sons, Charlie and Max.

The Mad Bomber Strikes Again (and it's all good!)

| Neal G. Moore ach Fourth of July, thousands of area residents gather for the annual Blast on the Bridge at Geist fireworks celebration. Some watch the aerial display aboard boats or while sitting on the marina bridge, others from the decks of shoreline homes, still others from favorite viewing spots surrounding lake. But, I wonder how many celebrants give consideration to the “who” and the “how” behind this much-anticipated event?

Marty Miller and J,R, Brooks prepare electrical launch system for a recent fireworks display in Lebanon, Indiana. Right: Go to www.atFishers.com to see an interview with Marty Miller. Meet Marty Miller, Geist resident and owner of Mad Bomber Fireworks Productions. “I’m the kid who never grew up – that’s what my wife says,“ smiled Miller whose father launched Mad Bomber in 1982. “I started working there when I was 12 years old. You get to be a kid forever, and there’s nothing better than putting on a good show.” I caught up with Miller and employee J.R. Brooks in the midst of a three-hour set up of a 15-minute show for a church celebration in Lebanon, Indiana. Miller explained that the secret sauce of a great fireworks display is variety and timing. For the Lebanon show, a combination of low-level effects and larger aerial shells were used, alternating between the two for pacing and to limit “dead sky” time. Shells were launched to a height of 150 feet or so using two methods: by hand with a highway safety-style flare, and with a hand-held electronic controller hard wired to the launch boxes. “The controller unit allows us to shoot as many as 400 shells. You get a lot of them in the air with this system,” said Miller.

barges are in the water, aligned properly, and pushed into place, organizers must then ensure that pleasure boats (and the people on them) are set back at a safe distance. Wind direction determines if the barges are nearer the dam or the bridge. “Depending on how the wind goes is how we set it up. We want the debris to land where we want it to land,” Miller noted.

programs, joked that his coaching and administrative responsibilities are “more explosive,” and conceded Mad Bomber is definitely the fun job. After all, the last four digits of his cellphone number are 1776. “I get more satisfaction out of the Geist Lake show than I do anything else,” said Miller. “I’m pretty well connected in the community with the coaching and stuff that I do, and there are a lot of people who know I put on the fireworks. It kind of puts a bit of extra pressure on to make sure it gets done the correct way and it goes off the way I want it to go off.”

"I get more satisfaction out of the Geist Lake show than I do anything else.”

In contrast, the Geist Blast show requires four employees working about 50 hours to set up the 45-minute show. “Geist is one of our more unique shows. We have four barges we set up and chain together. Everything is shot from those barges,” explained Miller. Once the

Blast is an all-electronic launch requiring hours of wiring and testing. “It takes a long time because once you plug it in, you have to make sure you have continuity, and make sure the shooting cues are when you want them,” said Miller. The 3,500 or so shells are ignited with electronic charges – similar to how a model rocket is fired. The aforementioned transmitter in Miller’s skilled hands controls the entire show. Safety, of course, is of paramount importance. “Just like any other business, there are little things that can go wrong,” said Miller as he knocked on a nearby wooden platform. “We’ve been pretty successful, and a lot of it comes from experience and double and triple checking.” Miller, who also is responsible for Holy Spirit Catholic Church’s athletic

Miller anticipates his children will one day join the business, but not quite yet. “They’re itching to come out now, but I want to wait until they’re a little bit older. They certainly understand the danger of fireworks. There’s plenty of time to fill dad’s shoes.” This mark’s the tenth consecutive year Miller has orchestrated Blast on the Bridge. He once did a $250,000 show in Chicago. And, considering the hundreds of festivals, football homecomings, weddings, even indoor fireworks for the Indiana Pacers, his will be awfully big shoes to fill. HOMES AT GEIST Intracoastal at Geist | Affordable Lake Access

If you or a friend is looking to make a move, how does affordable lake access, mature trees in an established neighborhood, community pool, boat docks and friendly, sociable neighbors sound? Intracoastal at Geist, just off 113th and Olio Road, sits in the heart of Geist in the HSE school district. Elementary schoolers attend Geist Elementary, recently rated #1 in the HSE system. The neighborhood is a nice mix of families, empty nesters and singles but all seem to enjoy the camaraderie of the community. Convenience to shopping, restaurants and all amenities of Fishers and Geist are also a plus. There are three stand-out homes currently offered by competing realtors Penny Dunn and Angela Duggan. Two are similar in price, in their traditional décor, semi-custom finishes and nearly 6000 sq. feet of space with finished basements. They are both less than ten years old. But the question is, do you prefer a deeded boat dock or a huge fenced back yard?

11233 Odessa If you prefer a huge backyard, 11233 Odessa, also just under $500k, features a mirrored fitness room, gourmet kitchen, main floor office with full bath, and more.

11088 Lexie Lane

14898 Starboard Lane

What type of lifestyle do you want? If your price-point is under $400k, look to 11088 Lexie Lane, where you’ll be surprised to find a huge 3 ½ car garage and most of the same semicustom features of a more expensive home.

The house with the deeded dock, at 14898 Starboard Lane, has a more intimate patio and backyard plus new hardwood floors and ceramic tile throughout the first floor, as well as a 4-car garage, all for less than $500k.

Visit the beautiful Intracoastal at Geist. It just might feel like home to you!

Heating and Air Conditioning Company Keeps it Local | Ann Craig-Cinnamon . Photos | John Cinnamon hen John Dinger got a call to repair a furnace some 35 years ago, little did he know that service call would lead him not only to his future wife, but also his business partner. John and Kandie Dinger started Action Air Heating and Air Conditioning back in 1986 as a twoperson company that they operated out of their garage. Today, they are headquartered in Fishers and with 15 employees, they service Indianapolis, Fishers, Geist, Anderson, and the surrounding areas.

W

About ten years ago, they partnered with Gary Sylvester who helped round out their team by bringing management skills and a business acumen to the company. John is involved in the technical service-call side, and Kandie handles all the office, payroll, human resources, and marketing functions. Having a hands-on woman in charge in what is typically a man’s field, she says, is rare. But she says people realize quickly that she knows her business. Action Air specializes in the service and replacement of all major brands of furnaces, air conditioners, and heat pumps. They also handle indoor air-quality issues such as filtration and duct cleaning. One area that they pride themselves in is their low-cost maintenance program which includes two service calls per year: one for furnaces during the heating months and the other for air conditioning during the cooling season. The Action Air Service Club can help save customers money by keeping equipment operating at peak efficiency, extending the life of the system, and troubleshooting potential problems before they happen. Kandie says that the average lifespan of a furnace or air conditioner is 10 to 15 years, and one of the biggest reasons that they don’t last longer is lack of maintenance. She stresses that unlike many other HVAC firms that are owned by large foreign companies, Action Air is truly a local mom and pop business.” We’re a local company and live in the area. A lot of the people we do furnace and air conditioning work for are people that we are friends with.” She adds that Action Air takes full responsibility for their work; and if it doesn’t get fixed properly the first time, they will make sure the job gets done right. “We try really hard to take really good care of folks. We’re

not just going to do a drive-by, 15-minute tune-up on your air conditioner. They’re usually in your home for an hour to an hour and a half. Our technicians do a really thorough job.” she says. One of the challenges to the heating and air conditioning business these days, Kandie says, is all the added regulation and new requirements. The cost of providing freon or coolant for older units is becoming prohibitive, so, as a result, it is often cheaper to replace an older unit with a more modern one. Action Air can help you choose the type of system that is best for your home should you need a new one, and financing options are available. MORE INFORMATION

Indiana Bastille Day yard celebration swelled to a crowd of 70. The reaction was favorable and since they outgrew their home, the idea to share Bastille Day with the town was born.

Calvin & Gabrielle Hendryx-Parker, founders of Bastille Day Photos & Story | Lynda Thies For the third consecutive year, a unique event known as Indiana Bastille Day is being held on Saturday, July 13, from 5:00-11:00 p.m. in Fortville’s Landmark Park. Bastille Day is recognized as the French national holiday and is celebrated much like the Fourth of July with fireworks, music, and food but with a Parisian feel. The event is presented this year by atGeist.com and organized by Six Feet Up, a Geist-based company owned by Geist residents Calvin and Gabrielle Hendryx-Parker in conjunction with Alliance Francaise. The event is a free family event that offers a taste of French culture right down to the temporary French street names. Bastille Day is celebrated in France but is also celebrated in other countries. Typically, those celebrations are small groups of people who have some sort of ancestral or cultural connection to France. In fact, that is exactly how Indiana Bastille Day started. Gabrielle Hendryx-Parker moved to Fortville with her husband, Calvin, a native of New Palestine, after the couple met and worked together in San Francisco. Gabrielle grew up in Burgandy, France, a town the size of Fortville, and was feeling nostalgic for her hometown after the 2009 Fourth of July celebration. Her desire was for the couple’s young sons to experience some of her country’s traditions. Since they were not able to travel to France, they decided to create the event at home. The couple invited friends and neighbors to experience French cuisine, music, fireworks, and their back

Indiana Bastille Day’s humble beginning from a small backyard crowd has grown steadily to attracting 2,000 people from as far north as Fort Wayne and as far south as Louisville, Kentucky, but has not lost the relaxed back yard feel. You will feel that you have stepped into the heart of a small town in France with the park setting as you stroll along the famous “L’Avenue des Champs Elysees,” taste French wines and Indiana beers, listen to an authentic French singer, watch a Petanque tournament, and enjoy a variety of French and American cuisine. There will be costumed performers who will provide a dimension of French history to the event. And if you speak the French language, they invite you to do so. There will be plenty of activities for young children including an opportunity to make a candlelight lantern and participate in the traditional lantern procession at dusk. The celebration concludes with a choreographed laser light show sure to please all ages.

Calvin shared, “I think this was the last thing that Fortville expected! But I think the thing that is important is that it is about the enjoyment of all things French. You don’t have to know the language to enjoy French food, play Petanque, or enjoy French music and the activities that are going on at the event.” The event provides local vendors as well to offer a variety of activities and experiences to blend both cultures. The couple is so grateful for the partnership with the town of Fortville and has worked hard to create an event that all Geistarea residents will not only enjoy, but they will make a beloved family tradition for years to come. What once started as a desire to share Gabrielle’s heritage with their children has turned into a day for the entire community. Come to Bastille Day, enjoy your neighbors, and experience a bit of French culture. You won’t be disappointed. Check out the website for further details www. indianabastilleday.com.

New Consignment Shop Opens in Fishers | Pat Carlini In Italy, they call it “Il Mercantino” or “the little market” when referring to consignment shops. In recent years “the little market” is big business and in the Fishers/Geist area, consignment shopping is hotter than ever! “Consigned by Design” — an upscale furniture/housewares consignment shop – opened its doors at 7035 E. 96th street (Near Sam’s Club) last month. This is the store’s second location after several years of success at its Geist location (11659 Fox Road). “We had about 700 visitors for the Grand Opening,” says Dana Johnson who owns the store with husband Jeff. “We had a great turnout and great sales!” The Johnsons took over the Geist store in 2009 (it originally opened in 2004) and business has been booming ever since. So, What’s the attraction? “Repurposing is very popular now,” says Dana. “One of your ‘under loved’ items could be exactly what somebody else is looking for. You make money without the work of a garage sale!” Consigned by Design is full of clean furniture arranged with coordinating accessories. These are not thrift shop pieces at thrift shop prices. I found items ranging from $18 decorative shelves to a Fairmont Designs table with 6 chairs for $1,399.00. The emphasis is on quality and not just the lowest possible price. Speaking of prices, all tags show the date of the next price drop (items only stay 120 days) leading to a waiting game as shoppers hold off to see if their desired item is still there when the price drops. “I tell people if they like it, buy it today because most likely when they come back it will be gone,” laughs Jeff. “I’ve seen it happen to my own mother!” Consigned by Design is now open daily from 10 to 7. If you are interested in selling your items, give them a call at 317-823-1300. You can get more information at www. consignedbydesigngeist.com, and on their new Facebook page, as well. Stay tuned, we may see more Consigned by Design shops pop up if “the little market” continues to be such big business! July 2013

B

y keeping the focus on play, the Children’s TherAplay Foundation Inc. utilizes innovative physical and occupational therapy techniques for children with special needs. Licensed therapists incorporate traditional therapy tools as well as hippotherapy into each child’s treatment plan. The TherAplay facility is located at Lucky Farms, a scenic horse farm in Carmel, where the four-legged staff members are always welcoming and a source of curiosity for new patients. Derived from the Greek word for horse, hippotherapy refers to treatment aided by a horse. The movement of the horse can be used in physical, occupational, and speech therapy. Unlike

24

fishers C O M M U N I T Y

Fishers_July_2013.indd 24

therapeutic riding, hippotherapy is prescribed by a physician as part of a treatment plan and is administered by a team that includes a licensed therapist in conjunction with a professional horse handler and a specially screened and trained therapy horse. “With hippotherapy, the horse impacts the rider. It is a one-on-one treatment with a licensed therapist, unlike a therapeutic riding lesson, and it’s also often covered by insurance and Medicaid,” said Lisa Kobek, executive director of the foundation. TherAplay serves children with special needs between 18 months to 13 years old. In the clinic setting, a horse’s gait, or stride, coupled with the animal’s warmth can be used to treat a wide variety of diagnosis, including autism, Down syndrome, and cerebral palsy.

The Town of Fishers G.I.V.E. Committee The Town of Fishers G.I.V.E. (Generosity, Involvement, and Volunteerism by Employees) committee is comprised entirely of town employees. The committee has raised more than $30,000 for local charities by hosting toy and food drives, volunteer outings, and fund-raising events. Each year, committee members suggest ideas and then take a vote. The charity of choice is notified, and the fundraising begins! This year, the committee selected the Children’s TherAplay Foundation. “A portion of the proceeds from the concession stand at the new Nickel Plate District Amphitheater will go to TherAplay,” said Aimee Ector, the human resources assistant for the Town of Fishers. The Town of Fishers employees are happily committed to improving the community through charity-based initiatives. “Our popular inflatables at the Fishers Freedom Festival are our biggest fundraiser. This year, we will be back at the Festival with the Run Express Train Station for toddlers, and a rock climb, jumbo slide, and obstacle course for the older kids. The money raised will go to TherAplay,” said Ector. This summer, the Fishers Parks & Recreation Department will also be accepting in-kind donations for therAplay at the Summer Concert Series, and Movies in the Park activities. The G.I.V.E committee has served numerous organizations, including Catch & Release, Chaucie’s Place, Delaware and Fall Creek Township Food Pantries, and the Hamilton County Red Cross. For more information on the G.I.V.E. committee, contact Aimee Ector at (317) 595-3106 or ectora@fishers.in.us “Every aspect of working with the horse touches on a part of the therapy, including the feel, sounds, and even smells of the horse as part of sensory integrative therapy,” Kobek said. Patients with brain and spinal cord injuries, genetic disorders, and learning disabilities may also be helped by hippotherapy. Therapists incorporate a variety of exercises for each child, which can include riding backwards and standing with assistance. Doing so helps strengthen posture, head and trunk control, and balance. “You’ll notice that the children aren’t in saddles. The special therapy blankets they sit on allow the kiddos to feel the three-dimensional movement. Having this closeness and really feeling the horse is so helpful for patients across a wide variety of diagnoses,” said Kobek. Patients experience hippotherapy benefits with muscle tone and strength gains, and with gross motor skill improvements such as sitting, standing, and walking. 26

fishers C O M M U N I T Y

Fishers_July_2013.indd 26

Range of motion and coordination also increase. TherAplay horses are chosen for the type of movement they produce, and for their temperament. All horses receive extensive training for their therapeutic role, and are handled with the utmost tenderness and care in the immaculate barn in which they are housed. In addition to the horse arena, TherAplay therapists utilize traditional therapy tools in the child-friendly clinic area and an outdoor playground in which therapy is administered in the form of play. “Some of our kids have a long journey in and out of hospitals and doctors’ offices, others experience daily pain. Here, we want their time to be something they look forward to doing each session,” said Kobek. Therapeutic goals that are determined by the TherAplay treatment team along with the patient and his or her family. Parents and family members can observe the sessions. As a proud parent of a hearing-impaired child, Kobek has first-hand knowledge of the benefits therapy can have on a child with special needs. “Children can spend a significant amount of time here, one and a half years of therapy on average, so our relationships with the families are so important to us,” added Kobek. A recent patient family survey found that 100 percent of families would recommend TherAplay to others. Because the program is so effective, TherAplay often has hippotherapy clinics across the country ask to share techniques. To meet operating costs of more than $900,000 annually while keeping true to its vision of helping as many families as possible regardless of their financial situations, the foundation relies on the generosity of corporate and private donations as well as other charitable organizations, such as the Town of Fishers G.I.V.E. Committee. TherAplay is a registered, not for profit charity organization. “We work from earned income as well as contributions from our generous donors. We are so grateful,” Kobek said. The foundation holds crucial fundraisers throughout the year, such as the 5K walk held in May and the golf tournament in June. The biggest fundraising event of the year is the annual Hoe-Down and Wild West Casino night. In it’s eleventh year, the event averages more than 400 attendees. The fun evening includes a live band and a mechanical bull, as well as live and silent auctions. The objective is to help the foundation continue to provide a warm and supportive environment to help children and their families achieve their goals and dreams. The HoeDown and Wild West Casino event is open to the public and provides opportunities for patrons to support the important work of the TherAplay team. Indiana Gun Club A Long-Standing Tradition 28

| Clark Edwards When I was a child, I spent many enjoyable hours at the Indiana Gun Club. Sometimes I was shooting, but mostly I was watching my dad and his friends practice or shoot in competitions. We would often pull our pop-up camper to the Indiana Gun Club and camp on the property for the weekend when there was a sanctioned shooting event. I have very fond memories of my dad, Jim Edwards, who passed in 1996, and his friends, Doc Gottschalk and Stu Warner, playing cards in the clubhouse on Wednesday nights. Some nights, we would venture over to Kingons Gun Club and shoot there as well. I grew up on the East side of Indianapolis in Irvington, and it seemed like we were

In addition to membership, instruction and corporate events have had steady growth. Recently, the club had a few dozen individuals from a petroleum company out for a day of team building. You will hear Sporting Clays sometimes referred to as Golf with Guns. Sporting Clays is a great way to enjoy a round with family and friends and maybe a cigar or two. Phillip is tireless in constantly working to bring about improvements to the club including the Sporting Clay course and the new card-operated systems for the stations on all the disciplines. You must also see for yourself the tremendous new retail operation within the club. Ask for Rich Self when you are in, and he will get you on the right track for the perfect firearm to suit your needs. In fact, the Indiana Gun Club is the only gun club in the Midwest where you can try before you buy. In a sport where each individual shooter can react or perform very differently with each brand of shotgun, this is a very big deal. As some will tell you, sometimes the gun picks the shooter – not the other way around. If you are looking for a place to shoot rifles and pistols, Amanda and Phillip also manage the Atterbury Shooting Complex in Edinburgh. I have frequented the Atterbury facility many times, and it is well worth the drive. Within the Hidden Gem that is the Indiana Gun Club, there lay an even bigger hidden bounty. This gold mine of knowledge and experience comes in the form of Bob Self. Bob is an N.S.C.A. Master Class Caesar Guerini Pro Staff Shooter. Caesar Guerini is a preeminent Italian manufacturer of fine shotguns. The stated goal of Caesar Guerini is to build the finest quality shotguns that people enjoy shooting. After 10 years as a Browning staff shooter, Caesar Guerini lured Bob away; and he has been excelling with a Caesar Guerini shotgun ever since. Bob has won world championships and has instructed as far away as Thailand. Not only do we have a world champion in our midst, but Bob is an instructor as well. Bob Self taking aim constantly driving to get to the Indiana Gun Club; so I find it amusing now that I live a stone’s throw from the club and it is in my daily surroundings. At the Indiana Gun Club, located at 14926 East 113th Street in Fishers, you can participate in Trap, Skeet, and Sporting Clays. In addition, they have a full retail store for all your shooting needs. The club has been there since the 1960’s and has enjoyed tremendous growth over the last 5 years since Phillip Baker and his wife, Amanda, have managed the property. During the Bakers’ tenure, the membership has risen from approximately 500 to over 1100 members today. Membership costs $100 the first year and then $50 for every year thereafter. Membership entitles you to discounts of $2 per round of Trap and Skeet and $10 per round of Sporting Clays.

From the moment you meet Bob, you quickly learn that he is dedicated to helping his pupils learn to shoot better and delights in watching them improve. Bob offers instruction to all ages in private or group settings. Within the same day, Bob may find himself one hour giving some fine-tuning advice to a lifelong shooter who is going pheasant hunting in Spain to the next hour instructing a junior novice shooter; both are equally important to him. When the super bowl was in town, Bob hosted an event for members of the NFL. Bob also offers gun fitting from his office on site. Bob can be reached at shotgundisciplin@aol.com. I encourage you to discover this family-friendly gem in Fishers. Come out and enjoy some Trap, Skeet, or Sporting Clays. Or drop by to observe others. And keep the gun club in mind for your next corporate outing. Whether you are new to the sport or looking for some additional instruction, Bob will be happy to work with you to enhance your enjoyment. July 2013

Courtyard | Kathi Moore “It will be absolutely fantastic – a new experience for the resident, much like a cruise ship every day,” enthused Neaizy Massoud, Food Services Manager for the beautiful, newlycompleted Allisonville Meadows Assisted Living Apartments at 104th and Allisonville Road. Food service is an important component when you’re looking for a place to retire or to recommend to aging parents. Massoud, chef-trained in Paris, France, has planned his meals to be a step up from what residents are accustomed to. For example, the dining room will be open all day with no rules outlining certain times meals are served. “I waived all that,” explained Massoud. “This is your home and, just like at home, you can walk to the dining room to eat whenever you want a snack or a meal. That MORE INFORMATION includes ice cream, Allisonville Meadows Assisted Living available every 10410 Allisonville Rd, Fishers, IN day. Cappuccino is 317-436-6400 always available as www.ASCSeniorCare.com/amal well.”

New & Improved The location of Allisonville Meadows is convenient, close to I-465 and I-69 for easy family visits. The grounds are well-landscaped with both patio and courtyardaccess apartments available. There are 89 assisted living apartments and 21 Memory Care apartments, all equipped with small kitchens, emergency pull-cords, nightlights, and more. “From the time residents move in, we tailor our services around their needs,” said Ann Jee Kirstein, General Manager. “We have so many options of services and activities to choose from.” There’s a community bus for outings, doctor appointments, and standard shopping trips. There are perks such as a pool table, activity and fitness room, a resident library with computers, a beauty shop for haircuts and shaves, a theater room with fresh popcorn, a coffee bar and a formal dining room to host meetings or visiting family. Kathi Moore, a career marketer and public relations director, has a natural curiosity that leads her in many different directions and helps to provide ideas for her writing. She and her husband have 3 children, 3 dogs and 3 cats. JULY 2013

uch has been made about the inherent beauty and vast functionality of Apple’s iconic iPhone. Indeed, actually making phone calls is fairly low on the list of things most people enjoy about their iPhone. Thus, it shouldn’t be surprising that a segment of Indiana’s art community sees the iPhone as a digital canvas. “It’s a beautiful blending of science and art,” according to Katz Lee Finch, an iPhone artist. Now, a mash-up of such talent and tech is on public display in Fishers.

M

In mid June, a digital art show called iCreate opened at Launch Fishers, featuring more than 70 pieces of photographic art produced entirely using iPhones. “It’s really unbelievable,” enthused John Wechsler, founder of the business incubator located at the Fishers Public Library. “When you look at this photography, and then consider it was all processed on the iPhone, it’s just mind-blowing that these artists are that talented and that creative.” The gallery is a welcome mix of real-life and abstract photographic images. The featured local artists (Finch, Becky Brill, Rad A. Drew, and Colman S. Love) have drawn inspiration from recognizable Indianapolis landmarks (think Crown Hill Cemetery) while also offering a peek at the human condition with compelling shots of everyday people. “The opportunity actually gives me goose bumps,” said Lee

Finch, who was also the gallery’s volunteer curator. “I am passionate about people experiencing art in a fun and unique way, and this is a great opportunity on many different levels.” Lee Finch explained that some of the images are presented as “straight photography” with no editing. Others range greatly in their use of filters and other processing techniques. All are displayed on either canvas or cotton paper and presented with title and artist information beneath each photo. While it doesn’t really need defending, Lee Finch is certain about iPhone art’s legitimacy. “When the earliest cameras first came on the scene, they were criticized by traditional artists because it was a new and little understood medium. Yesterday’s un-convention is now today’s convention, and iPhone art will soon become a convention.” Wechsler agreed the show is a stunning example of blended science and art – something that Launch Fishers, as gallery host, wanted to provide to its members and the public. “If you

look at what it takes to start up a business, there is a ton of creativity that goes into that. It really is part science and part art, so having the iPhone show here is fundamental to what we do.” Wechsler added that Launch Fisher’s 16,000-square footprint is a welcome, additional space for this and future community events. According to Lee Finch, central Indiana has a growing community of iPhone artists who understand the obvious: that the most important camera you own is the one you have with you. “What we have now is pocket creativity. What used to be very expensive technology is now at out fingertips.” That’s what the world is about now – creating visual content and then sharing it with family and friends. I suspect iCreate would make Steve Jobs proud.

One of the first things you see as you enter Koko FitClub, located at 11581 Geist Pavilion Drive, Suite 110 in Fishers, is a framed sign reading, “in a gym, this is where the mirror would go.” In short order you realize there are no mirrors here. No clanging free weights. No sweaty weight machines. No pool. No sauna. Koko FitClub has effectively removed all such intimidating things found in “normal” health clubs, concentrating instead on the things you need to achieve your health and fitness goals. “Koko Smartraining is customized, efficient and convenient,” says Meghann Wilson, 27, who, with business partner Chintu Patel, has opened three Koko FitClub locations on Indy’s northside since last July in Noblesville, Fishers, and now, Carmel. “Everything is set up with your Koko Key so the machine gives you custom settings and workouts based on your goals, your range of motion and current fitness level,” added Wilson. “You keep a steady pace moving from exercise to exercise with no wait time, so you get the benefits of a 90-minute workout in just 30 minutes.” The program is nearly flawless. Each time a member goes to the club, they do a different workout. A single machine can facilitate more than 100 exercises. For cardio development, the treadmills and elliptical machines have their own 15 programs. Members listen to a MP3 player as a world-class trainer literally walks them through each workout. New programs are introduced seasonally and are said to provide twice the calorie burn of traditional cardio in just 15 minutes. Members have their own web page to track progress and gain

nutritional assistance based on personal goals for weight loss, strength training, a maintenance “protection” plan, as well as specific programs for those suffering from arthritis, back pain, diabetes, men’s health or recovery from breast cancer. As workouts are completed points are earned and members receive recognition and prizes as they progress toward their goals. Each machine has a video screen to guide the user through their workout, including a pace bar that keeps you moving at optimal speed (no more crashing weights.) It appears foolproof; you must do each exercise properly and in a timely manner. Everything is digitally tracked to monitor your progress, which of course, is motivating. Wilson said she was drawn to this franchise for many reasons. Like many girls, she struggled with her body, though she was a high school athlete. In college she dated a football player (now a CFL player) who introduced her to good workouts and she eventually became his trainer. Her parents, longtime Subway franchisers, encouraged her to make the leap into ownership, introducing her to Patel, the financial end of the business. Their goal is to develop the market into 10-plus locations, including downtown Indianapolis. “The biggest challenge,” explained Wilson, “is educating people about our program and how different and effective it is. We don’t measure success by weight loss. At Koko, you’ll focus on strength and health from the inside out, burning fat, measuring strength gains and increasing lean muscle levels.” That starts with the name. Koko is a Japanese word meaning one-by-one. For more information visit www.kokofitclub.com.

absorbing nutrients which in turn can lead to other problems such as anemia and osteoporosis. After I was diagnosed, I went through what others had, have and are going through when being diagnosed. “What am I going to eat?” and “I have to give up what?” Five years ago the gluten free food choices weren’t great, I can’t imagine being diagnosed 10, 15, or 20 years ago as the choices were even less than we have now. However, gluten free food has come a long way- not only in taste, but in availability. More and more establishments are offering gluten free choices. In Fishers alone, the list is extensive. The major grocery store food chains such as Marsh, Kroger, Meijer, and Target all offer a variety of gluten free products. Some of the stores have a gluten free section; however, there are many mainstream products that are now labeled gluten free that are placed on the shelves amongst other products. Some examples are Rice Chex cereal and Barilla spaghetti sauce. The newest food store to enter our area is Earth Fare Market. They have one of the largest selections of gluten free products available. They also make it easier to identify a gluten free product by placing a brown bar on the shelf under that product.

Dining With Celiac Disease | Tracie Nebrich When asked how I found out I had Celiac disease, I say it was pure luck. That is not how you would usually describe someone who has been diagnosed with Celiac; however, some people’s journeys to identifying their issue have been long. It was such a relief to figure out what is wrong with me! I have always had IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) type symptoms, but over the course of a few years, they had gotten progressively worse. When my husband, two children, and I moved to Fishers five years ago, my husband insisted that I see a gastroenterologist and luck happened to be on my side as I found a great doctor. One endoscopy and a few biopsies later, I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. Celiac or Celiac Sprue Disease is a genetic autoimmune disease which damages the lining, specifically the villi, of your small intestines when you ingest gluten. It inhibits you from 38

Many restaurants in Fishers do a great job in serving the gluten free community. One of my favorite places for breakfast/brunch is the Sunrise Café. They feature a gluten free menu offering items such as a crustless quiche served with gluten free bread. If you are in the mood for a salad, soup, spud, or even nachos, then McAlister’s Deli is the place for you. Visit their website under their nutritional menu, and then click gluten, to view a full list of items that are safe to eat. In my opinion, Murphy’s Pub House is a must to visit. They do not have a gluten free menu, but they will work with your dietary needs and can make a gluten free pizza and other gluten free items. Thai Kitchen, Qdoba (look on their allergen chart), Noodles & Company (they have rice noodles and are currently carrying a special gluten free dish), and Cheeseburger in Paradise are also area favorites. Pizza was a major food item for me to give up. So I am devoting a separate paragraph to it! Now, either dine in or carry out, there are several gluten free options from which to choose. My favorites are Puccini’s Smiling Teeth (I personally love the paparazzi and the shrimp santori), Monical’s (gluten free veggie is also a must), Extreme Pizza, and Dominos. For the dessert lover in all of us, there is Gigi’s Cupcakes. They carry gluten free cupcakes on Friday and Saturdays. If needed sooner, you can place a special order for no smaller than a dozen. Zogurts yogurts and all but two of Orange Leaf’s yogurts are gluten free too. As a final note I would like to add that these are some of

my favorite places that I like to frequent here in Fishers. There are several more that offer gluten free menus and choices; sometimes all you have to do is ask. Most of these establishments do not have a dedicated kitchen to cook gluten free items in; however several do have dedicated equipment and/or utensils used to prepare and serve the gluten free foods. The only establishment that I have encountered that has a dedicated kitchen is called The Measuring Cup. It is an online bakery and they are also found at local Farmer’s Markets. I have ordered from them several times and their food is truly wonderful. To contact them email them at cwilcox@gfmeasuringcup.com. Gluten seems to be a popular topic these days. I hear about diets that exclude gluten and then of course there are health reasons as to why some of us want gluten free items. I want to say that I listed some of the places that I have frequented and I have not had any reactions with my Celiac Disease. I think it is important to get the word out that there are choices for us with this disease. Luck had a lot to do with my diagnosis but it doesn’t have to dictate my dining. Roller Derby Skater Pumps up the Jam on + off the Rink | Janet C. Striebel

ndianapolis is home to an independent women’s flat track roller derby league called the Circle City Derby Girls made up of two teams with more than 60 women. This amateur league travels throughout the Midwest for competitive matches; home matches are held at the Forum at Fishers skating rink. Roller Derby originated in Chicago in 1935 and the contact sport has grown to about 1,250 amateur leagues throughout the world. In fact, this roller sport is under consideration for the 2020 Olympics. Traditionally, the theatrical elements of the sport have outweighed the athleticism. Today, roller derby reflects a genuinely competitive sport, although underlying drama still contributes to the entertainment experience. For example, team members have pseudo skater names projecting a certain kind of image. Some are intimidating like “Spleana Rupture,” “Richie Whip,” and “TeKillYa Slamher.” Some are more laid back, friendlier names like Philly Cheezskate and Miss United Skates. “Roller Derby is as real as any mainstream sport like football, basketball, or baseball,” says “Ionic Bondage,” I mean, Michele Williamson, member of the Socialites “A” team, and assistant coach of the Party Crashers “B” team. With a skater name like Ionic Bondage, it’s not surprising to learn Michele works as an analytical chemist at Eli Lilly. “We follow rules in this sport and there’s a lot of strategy. We always have a plan that involves stopping the opposing jammer (person trying to score) either by pushing opponents out of bounds with full body, hip, or shoulder checks (hits), or by working as a team to play defense.” Essentially, the teammates play offense and defense simultaneously by blocking the opposing jammer while trying to clear a path for their own jammer. 40

Did this setback stop her? No way. She continued to practice with her team without any physical contact. She participated in all endurance drills and continued to work out at the gym. “I’m in better shape now than I’ve ever been in,” says Michele, a single mom, raising two sons. “I began a new healthy diet and lost 60 pounds. I stayed on blood thinner medication for one year but now I only take one aspirin a day. I feel great!” A few weeks after her heart attack, during cardiac rehab she was feeling a little dizzy. The therapist at rehab suggested going to the ER to receive fluids, as she thought Michele was dehydrated. After seeking medical help she learned from her doctor that, based on the results of her CT scan, she had suffered a prior stroke. Her stroke occurred about six months prior to her heart attack, a health event about which she had no idea. The only symptom was difficulty in completing sentences, which improved gradually over the course of a couple weeks. Due to damaged tissue, Michele now takes anti-seizure medication daily as a precaution.

Michele, a Fishers resident, remains a strong team player even though she has faced some serious health obstacles in addition to a high ankle sprain and bruises. In December of 2011, she was practicing with her team when she experienced an episode of nagging heartburn. Her teammates urged her to go to the hospital to have it checked. There, she learned that she had, in fact, suffered a heart attack. She underwent surgery to have a stent placed in the LAD artery where she had 100% blockage.

Michele was very athletic growing up in Westfield where she played softball, soccer, and basketball. She took iceskating lessons and roller skated at the Rainbo Roller Rink in Noblesville. As a mother, she continues to balance the demands of working full time, raising her two sons, Hunter, 14, and Drake, 9, in addition to skating for the competitive roller derby team. Since the league is skater-owned and operated its members participate in various fundraisers throughout the year and rely on sponsors to raise money. Members of the league appear in several local parades including the Pride Parade held downtown, and the Fishers Freedom Festival. Come see the Circle City Derby Girls as they host their next bouts on July 27th and August 10th, 6:00 p.m., Forum at Fishers, 9022 E. 126th Street. The dirty little secret that your television provider doesn’t really want you to know is that the DVR basically is a hard drive with a builtin program guide and a user interface that oftentimes appears to have been designed during the Reagan administration. Quick, try to give a simple description of a DVR without using the terms “magical,” or “I doubt my family could live under the same roof without it.” You’re probably overlooking a simple term – likely something that you use almost daily: hard drive.

system. The DIY version of the DVR is more accurately described as a Personal Video Recorder (PVR). To get started, you’re going to need a computer that will be dedicated to acting as a home server and running your PVR software. The beauty of this approach is that this computer doesn’t need to be the latest and greatest (though you can easily build a fully-equipped home theater PC for less than $500 if you’re ambitious) but, instead, can be the retirement home for that PC collecting dust in the closet. The first major step is to upgrade the onboard memory, primarily because of the space that recorded media occupies. If you are repurposing an older machine, it is likely light on storage. Luckily, memory on a permegabyte basis is a bargain right now. To keep things streamlined, you will want to get an internal drive to replace the one in the machine. Sufficient onboard memory (different from hard drive storage) is also a must and also comparatively inexpensive, so consider 4GB as a baseline for your project. On the output side, making sure you have a video card capable of handling the work you have in mind is crucial to a positive outcome. For input, a video capture card is a must in order to allow your computer to actually read the information coming in from the broadcast signal. You can pay extra for additional features, but standard cards can be had for under $100. Make sure the one you choose comes with a remote control, or add it to your hardware list. The final hardware options are a wireless keyboard and mouse in addition to the cabling to hook up your machine to the TV. Having wireless versions of the keyboard and mouse allow you to stow both and pull them out only when needed.

Turner Takes on Summer Camps | Turner D. Edwards Are you looking for awesome ways to keep the summer fun rolling? Well, here are two great ways. I went to two amazing summer camps in June which offer fun activities for kids. If you are a kid who likes lots of action, the first camp I went to is the one for you: Incrediplex off Pendleton Pike in Lawerence. It’s closer than it sounds. Incrediplex offers camp for 6-14 year olds. You won’t believe the number of activities offered with camp admission: free play on inflatables, a jungle gym, a bowling alley, laser tag, a euro bungee trampoline, and a rock-climbing wall. When I got to camp on the first day, I was just in time for morning snack. Yep, that’s right – they offer a morning and afternoon snack. After the snack, I played a few awesome games of laser tag and took a thrill ride on the inflatable slide. I noticed that other kids were having a great time on the euro bungee and jungle gym. Bowling was another “vacation destination” in which lots of kids participated. After lunch, we went to one of the indoor soccer fields and played group games like Capture the Flag, good ole Dodgeball, and Ghost in the Graveyard, oh yeah! I knew the second day of camp would be supercalafragalisticexpialadoscious, so I got there earlier. Fridays are generally a special day. We got to relax, munch on popcorn, and watch Monsters, Inc. After that, we went outside for “Water Day.” Games included water balloon toss, capture the water balloon, and an all-out squirt gun war. As you can see, the variety of activities offered at Incrediplex is immense. For the more laid back type, I would suggest my second camp, MyART. MyART is located at 12244 116th Street – also known as Rita’s Back Yard in Fishers. The ages are four and up, with classes for four to five, six to eight, nine and up, and teen/adult. In this camp, you will jump right into making Pictures from top to bottom: Turner in line for Eurobungy at Incrediplex warming up for soccer at Incrediplex - ready to begin at MyArt - bowling at Incrediplex 44

pieces of art. Every week has a theme around which your art will be based. For example, my week was “Under the Sea.” I painted a crab, used colored pencils to create a reef, and used sharpies to create dolphins and a sea turtle. Those who completed projects quickly also created a seal and another reef with water paint and salt to make the picture come alive. Upcoming themes for camps this summer include Pokemon, Things with Wings, and Angry Birds.

the reasons: the teachers are very nice, it is fun to be creative, and the environment is very friendly. Best of all, at the end of the week there is an art show for the kids to show off their work to their parents. For more information on these camps, log on to their websites: incrediplex.com and myartindy.com.

I thoroughly enjoyed this camp. I would suggest this camp to any enthusiastic artist out there ready to improve their skills, and to any kids who just love to draw and create art. Here are

basic needs first, which puts internet services low on the priority list. This, in turn, makes finding employment more difficult.” Fall Creek Township clients may use the computer work station during regular township office hours to job search or work on their resumes. Clients may walk in or call to schedule a time that best fits their schedule. “We were able to provide this service at no additional cost to the taxpayers,” adds Hern. “We refurbished a computer in the office that wasn’t being utilized and connected it to our existing internet service.” In addition to assisting Fall Creek Township residents in need through Township Assistance and a computer for job searching, the office also houses an onsite food pantry. The food pantry is open Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The office is located at 116th Street and Brooks School Road. For more information, visit www.FallCreekTownship.info or call 317-841-3180.
