MORE THAN SUMMER READING PROGRAMS THE FISHERS AND NOBLESVILLE LIBRARIES CELEBRATE SUMMER! during their summer break,” says Cheryl Jurgens, Community Relations and Marketing Manager of HEPL.

Writer / Kara Reibel

Ideas live here. This is part of the new branding that the Hamilton East Public Libraries (HEPL) is now promoting. In addition to ideas, what also lives here are discoveries, innovation and connections. And thanks to a new website, the online content, databases and information about library events are now easier than ever to access because fun summer events live here too. “Every Hero Has a Story” is the theme of the summer reading program. From June 1 through July 31, all ages are welcome to participate and are eligible for prizes. Participation is truly open for all ages, including infants, children, teens and adults. “With school out for the summer and with the summers being shortened for kids, we get geared up with a full calendar of events

A few of these include: • Designing graphic art and comics ( July 9 and 15 at the Noblesville Library) • The Science of Superman ( July 2 at the Fishers Library and July 13 at the Noblesville Library) with Professor Steve (who does everything Superman can do, learn the science behind it) • The Magic of Books with magician Marcus Layman (he uses his magic charm to amuse and delight June 15 at Noblesville Library) • Super Hero Finale on July 31 to wrap up the summer reading program with hometown heroes (each library will have their own celebration that day). There are special programs daily for toddlers, adults and teens. There are bunny hops, story times, Percy Jackson After Hours Camps, math clubs, teen art, fly fishing and many, many more scheduled activities on the HEPL docket. “We have several annual events that are popular, such as Star Wars Days, leading up to May 4, and in October, we have Octoboo and Booktober Fest, our local author fair,” says Jurgens. On July 9, Abraham Lincoln biographer Dr. Brian R. Dirck will be a guest speaker. Dirck has written several books on President Lincoln to high acclaim. “Besides our busy events calendar, we

have lots of nice changes going on,” says Jurgens. “Of course our website is a big one, and it is now mobile-friendly, so its fully accessible on any device. We have gotten lots of positive feedback on it. We are also looking at ways to adapt our current spaces to accommodate how kids study and people use the libraries.” The new and improved website was launched in April during National Library Week. It’s easier to navigate, and the site overhaul was a success, thanks to Iconic Digital and Reborn Code out of Launch Fishers. Virtual visits from authors via Skype make it easier to schedule author events. Recently, local author Barbara Shoup spoke of her new book, “Searching for Jack Kerouac,” and this fall, Diana Gabaldon (August 15), Tess Gerritsen (September 24) and Debbie Macomber (September 30) will be featured. Author Dan Wakefield will be speaking at the Booktober Fest on the new edition of “Under The Apple Tree;” it has a new preface by Richard Lingeman. Book clubs are another popular feature of the Noblesville and Fishers libraries. There are several to select from; the times, locations and details are on the website. “It’s fun because a lot of these groups go off site to local brew pubs or restaurants and are all about connecting with the community,” says Jurgens. New members are always welcome. The HEPL is committed to making continual improvements to keep the library relevant. “We are continually looking at how we use our spaces,” shares Jurgens. “The last remodel and expansion was 10 years ago,

and since then, the way teens use the library has changed, so we are too by adding docking stations for iPads and other devices. We are adapting for the times and changing to accommodate the evolving needs of our patrons.” Online, there are a lot of different databases and information available such as free music downloads and movies, small business databases and the online lending catalog. Now with the new site, these features are easier to access.

“Working on the HEPL website was a real treat,” says Iconic Digital Co-Founder Jason Hutcheson. “The library leadership team is a progressive group that embraces change and is looking to continuously improve the product they are delivering to the community. They have so much to offer.

new logo, tagline and website that supports their efforts. I’m really excited about how it turned out.”

“The challenge was exposing the vast amount of resources while creating an online destination that looks great, connects to the community and is easy to navigate. HEPL had a strategic vision, and we are proud to have played a role in creating a

With all that is going on at your local library, you owe it to yourself to check it out! (Pun intended!)

Given their fresh online face, improved access to the online catalog and other useful services are now more readily available.

PURE EATERY OPENS IN FISHERS

8 / FISHERS COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / JUNE 2015 / atFishers.com

Writer / Pat Carlini Photographer / Brian Brosmer

A new “purely” good café, Pure Eatery, is now open in Fishers at 8235 E. 116th St. It is the second location for the popular eatery which first opened in Fountain Square in 2010. Owners Dave Andrus (also owner of Pearl Street Pizzeria) and Jason Jacobi found a spot in the heart of the growing downtown Fishers area in the strip mall between Wild Ginger and Chateau Thomas Winery. Pure boasts fresh, honest food. But this little eatery is a whole lot more than just a lunchtime sandwich spot, which frankly, we were expecting. Pure is also a brunch spot on weekends, and you can catch dinner and a cocktail during the week since they are open 11 a.m. to 3 a.m. Monday through Friday. They serve a variety of craft beers, wine and an impressive list of specialty drinks. The menu is diverse as well with everything from the goudastuffed jalapeño appetizer, vegan tacos, signature sandwiches, wraps, salads and build your own entrees of mac and cheese. The favorite at our table was the rice bowl, which is a choice of chicken or shrimp, sautéed with fresh veggies and white rice (no brown rice offering at this time). Pure strives to be local and green: they serve locally owned Amazing Potato Chips and Lick ice cream, the artwork on the walls is from local artists and biodegradable to-go ware is used for carryout orders. They make their own soups every day and dressings such as the tomato basil vinaigrette and the herbed ranch. Overall, the Pure atmosphere is artsy and casual with some background music and a choice of wood tables or comfortable booths. The bar area is somewhat separated from the restaurant with pieces of artwork hanging on heavy duty chains. I stopped in on a Monday which is half price day for specialty drinks, and I noticed there are several drinks with a reference to their downtown roots such as the White River cocktail, the Duckpin and even the Fountain Square cocktail. So I couldn’t help but think maybe Pure will come up with a drink making reference to its new home is Fishers — the Nickel Plate drink perhaps? I know we will be back to check it out! NEW OWNERS PURCHASE FISHERS BANQUET CENTER

Cami and Greg O'Herren recently purchased the Fishers Banquet Center and look to rebrand it as The Wellington.

Writer & Photographer / Keeley Miller

Since 2006, the Fishers Banquet Center has provided hospitality for events ranging from weddings to corporate meetings. Last month, the property was sold at a sheriff ’s sale to Greg O’Herren, owner of Shamrock Builders in Indianapolis. “We actually closed on the property two weeks ago. It was being sold at a sheriff ’s sale, being sent back to the bank,” said O’Herren. “I came in here about a month ago and saw that it was being sold, and I thought that maybe it could be an office building. But after I talked to the staff, I decided that this was a really good business, and we should keep it as it is.” The banquet hall has a capacity for hundreds of people with up to 4,200 square feet of event space. From a 10-person conference room to a ballroom that can seat up to 500, the floorspace is versatile for

an array of events. The facility also has a full kitchen, perfect for on and offsite catering. When they found the sale, O’Herren and his wife Cami decided to take the opportunity. “It is just one of those things that stands out in front of you, and you just have to say ‘Yeah, that looks like a good opportunity,” said Cami. The O’Herrens plan to change the name of the banquet center to The Wellington, creating a more modern and upscale image. With past experience in sales, marketing, realty and construction, the couple strives to provide exceptional customer service. “We weren’t specifically looking to be in the catering business, but it is a good fit. We are not really in the business, but we are in business,” said Greg. “It is all about customer satisfaction and taking care of people. All we are trying to do is take care of customers.”

HOT FUN IN THE SUMMERTIME Summer is here! Is there anything better than outdoor concerts? Actually, there is – when those outdoor concerts are FREE! The Fishers Concert Series is back for the 13th year. It’s bigger and better than ever this year with several options for you to enjoy on the lawn at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater. On Tuesday nights from 7-9 p.m., you can grab your blankets, lawn chairs and coolers

and head over to the sprawling lawn in front of the amphitheater. These concerts are usually packed, so come early if you want to sit close to the stage. The Tuesday Summer Concert Series runs from June 2 through July 14. The last two Tuesdays are saved as rain dates for any concerts that were cancelled due to bad weather. Parrots of the Caribbean, Dave and Rae and Endless Summer are just a few

of the bands you can enjoy on Tuesdays. No tickets are needed for these events. Just come and enjoy the show! The AMP After Dark Concert Series runs a little later on Friday nights from 9-11 p.m. These concerts are more geared toward adults. They begin Friday, June 5, and will continue through August. A few acts you can enjoy include An Innocent Band, Firecracker Blues and Slim Pickins. Though you won’t need “Two Tickets to Paradise,” you will need tickets to get into the Eddie Money concert on Friday, July 24. Listening to Eddie Money out under the stars for free? I think “I’m in Love”!!! Get there early for this one. The gates open at 7 p.m. This concert is sponsored by WJJK. As the show gets closer, details on how to get tickets can be found on their website. Just FYI – for this show, coolers are not allowed. We got a chance to go to one of these AMP After Dark concerts in May. If you were a girl in the ’80s, you probably had a crush on Rick Springfield! Whether you watched him as Noah Drake on “General Hospital” or knew every word to “Jessie’s Girl,” you loved him. So needless to say, we jumped at the chance to go see him.

He didn’t disappoint! He looked great, and his voice was spot on. He sang all our favorites and added some fun new ones. We stood next to a guy who got there at 3 p.m. to make sure he was in the front row. He and his wife seemed to know every word to even the obscure songs! Rick told a lot of fun personal stories and interacted constantly with the fans. The smaller venue made the concert a much more personal experience. He went out to the crowd for the song “Human Touch” and made a lot of ladies’ night by grabbing their

hands. It was a fun night under the stars listening to great music.

our local actors at plays that will be held on stage this summer.

At the events, you can pack your own cooler or buy drinks there. There’s a wine tent sponsored by JJ Winery and Big Dawg Brewhaus, or you can head over to the beer tent sponsored by Four Day Ray Brewing. You’ll also find a food truck in case you get the munchies! Some other events that can be enjoyed at the amphitheater this summer include the 53rd Annual Blues Fest on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend. You can also check out

LENDING A NEIGHBORLY HAND Writer / Kara Reibel Photographer / Brian Brosmer

HAND invests in neighborhoods, provides housing solutions and builds partnerships to improve lives and build community in Hamilton County. Community leaders from across Hamilton County gathered for the Hamilton County Area Neighborhood Development (HAND) annual meeting. Special keynote speaker Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann addressed the progress and commitment of those gathered for the betterment of area neighborhoods, emphasizing that those communities that focus regionally have a higher rate of success. The lieutenant governor oversees the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority. “We are a convening entity, not experts,” says Nate Lichti, executive director of HAND. “We are the facilitators bringing together the right people to improve our community.” Through partnerships with developers and nonprofits, such as Meyer Najem and the Legacy Fund, HAND orchestrates several projects in our immediate area.

Grocery Store, and HAND only felt it appropriate to honor the name. Through programs like Neighborhoods NOW and Helping Hand, communities come together to strengthen as a whole. “It’s with these programs that smarter and better housing developments are possible,” says Ellspermann. With the City of Fishers, the redevelopment is on a different scale. “Many times, we are looking at fixing a broken or neglected area,” says Lichti. ”With redevelopment in Hamilton County, it is more aspirational to improve lives and build a community in a growing, thriving place.” Keep Fishers Beautiful came to be as a result of tighter code enforcement led by our Community Development Department. While ensuring properties throughout Fishers meet regulations, the City of Fishers sought out opportunities to support residents and assist them in addressing any code violations.

Lichti spoke of a recent project in downtown Noblesville in partnership with several other groups, including Meyer Najem, in rehabilitating the Roper Capstone “We had the idea to do a ‘work day’ in building near the square in the Historic one of our neighborhoods, performing District. beautification projects like landscaping and planting flowers,” says Aaron Head, “The Roper Capstone is the third building Associate Planner of the Community and the last of the unoccupied vacant Development Department with the City of buildings on our block,” says Lichti, Fishers. “HAND gave us the seed money to resulting in the addition of six apartments. make it possible.” “This adds affordable housing at a convenient location.” The event is a community initiative The Roper Capstone building is historically that sparks pride within residents and collaboration between city officials to keep significant due to being the location of the property values high in some of our oldest first African American-owned business in neighborhoods. HAND was incredibly supportive of Keep Fishers Beautiful and has helped the initiative become self-sustaining as they look toward the future. As that partnership has evolved, the City of Fishers has been able to expand further partnership opportunities to include local Fishers businesses. The 2015 event was sponsored in part by Haven, a local company that targets homeowners along with many other participating community partners. Working with older Fishers neighborhoods who may or may not have an HOA, the organized work day with Keep Fishers Beautiful brings in dumpsters and helps clear branches, cut down trees and gets the entire community involved in the clean up effort. “We go door to door, connecting with the neighborhood at a grassroots level and facilitating a dialogue with the City that provides a meaningful connection,” says Head. “Events like this builds a stronger community.” Lichti found a T-shirt in a thrift shop that reads, “Love Thy Neighborhood.” “It reminds me of exactly why all of us do what we do. We love our community, and it’s this love and the love of one another that provides the foundation for helping others get a leg up,” shares Lichti. NOT YOUR PARENTS’ SAT…

THE NEW SAT AND WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW WHY WAIT ANOTHER Beat theMAKE Fall Rush SUMMER? YOUR & Make your Backyard DREAMS REALITY! DreamsA a Reality

Writer / Janelle Morrison Photographer / JJ Kaplan

The agony of taking the SAT® is a rather distant memory for some. Unfortunately for the Class of 2017, the preparation for the new SAT format may be even more daunting, and how university admissions offices nationwide will value the scores is still rather ambiguous. The College Board announced in March 2014 that it was redesigning the SAT. It released an initial 211-page overview that is a work in progress. The redesigned SAT will place greater emphasis on reasoning, analyzing data and critical thinking. The test will incorporate a “rights-only” scoring in which a student will earn points for correct answers with no penalty for incorrect answers. The current SAT penalizes the student 1/4 point for each incorrect answer. The new SAT will have two math sections, one calculator section and one no-calculator section, and will have an emphasis on evidence-based reading and writing as opposed to the current critical reading, writing, math and essay sections, to name just a few of the format changes.

Kurt Spitler, owner and executive director of the Huntington Center, located in Carmel, is prepping students for the current SAT format for this fall while preparing parents and students for the new SAT that will take effect in March of 2016. “If you are a senior in high school now, the changes in the SAT won’t affect you,” Spitler explained. “If you are a junior in the 2014-2015 school year, the current SAT is available only through January 2016 of your senior year. However, for sophomores, you have three options. You can either prepare to take the current SAT this fall in October, November, December or January; secondly, prepare for the ACT only; or your third option is to be the ‘guinea pig’ and wait to take the new SAT in March. “Now if your child wants to get into the IU Kelley School of Business, a nationally renowned business school, you can go on their website, and it will tell you what GPA, SAT or ACT score you currently need to get direct admittance into their school, though there is nothing on their website that tells you what score you will need with the new SAT.

“A perfect SAT score is currently 2400, and it is going down to 1600, the way that it used to be in 2005. I have contacted many universities and asked if they will still superscore the old SAT and for how long. I have also inquired about what are they planning to do for the new SAT, and the response is yes, they plan to superscore the old SAT, but regarding the new SAT, they ‘don’t know.’”

It is unknown at this point how the universities are going to emphasize or value the new SAT when they are looking at seats available for that coming year. By this July, Spitler and his instructors will have all new curricula to prepare students for the spring SAT and the October PSAT that will both be in administered in the new format.

Currently 95 percent of the schools throughout the U.S. superscore the SAT. They take the best critical reading, math and writing scores from multiple SATs of an individual student and then extract these best scores into one superscore. “They’re not going to be able to superscore the new SAT with the old one,” Spitler emphasized. “They haven’t alerted us

as to when they’re going to stop. Last year, Michigan and Ohio State stopped superscoring because of what was coming up in 2016. How many other Big Ten schools are going to follow?” The instructors at Huntington Learning Center are ahead of the curve and are preparing students for the changes while continuing to prepare the students who are

able to take the old SAT before March. So why is SAT changing? “SAT and ACT are competing organizations,” Spitler said. “The ACT has become more prevalent among students looking at higher education options. Typically what we do when a student comes in to our facility, we will give them a practice SAT test and a practice ACT. The ‘practice’ ACT is a retired real test used and not a Huntington test. “We will compare those two tests on a national basis and see where they are starting out higher. Some students will be about equal, and some will see a huge delta with one test over the other. Both the SAT and ACT are approved by the universities, and 99 percent of them, including Ivy League schools, accept both.” The Huntington system has become a proven method of tutoring and preparation because each program is based upon the individual student. Dr. Raymond and Eileen Huntington in New Jersey founded it in 1977. Spitler purchased the Carmel franchise threeand-a-half years ago from its original owner, and their location has been operating for 11 years. “The Huntington system is amazing, and it’s all in how we do it,” Spitler expressed. “Everything that we do here is individualized, and we focus on each student. We are not a crutch, and we are not here to help a student with their homework. Our purpose is to increase their skill sets. If we increase their skill sets, their confidence is going to go up, and if they are confident, they are going to be more motivated.”

With a goal to raise awareness for local schools, the Hamilton Southeastern Schools Foundation (HSSF) is on a search for the ugliest golf pants in Fishers. Entries can be submitted by tagging posts on Twitter or Facebook with #UglyPantsHSSF. The winner, determined by councilmen Todd Zimmerman and Eric Moeller as well as HHSF Director Freedom Kolb, will receive a small prize from the foundation. “The foundation sees ourselves as an extension of a community that values education, seeks to drive academic innovation and maintain the excellence that has become associated with HSE,” said Kolb. “#UglyPantsHSSF is a way to increase visibility for our work all while having a great time!” The competition leads up to the 14th annual “Fore the Kids” Golf Tournament on June 4, though participation in the golf tournament is not required to be able to participate in the contest. Proceeds from the event will benefit elementary literacy, secondary STEM, mental health and social justice programming. “I think every participant is excited about the tournament for different reasons, but I love the chance for public education champions to come together,” said Kolb. “It will be a great cross section of our community having fun while making a difference.” To enter, tag your photo on either Facebook or Twitter with #UglyPantsHSSF. The winner will be chosen June 1 after the golf tournament.

EYEWITNESS NEWS MEET THE FISHERS RESIDENT WHO DECIDES WHAT YOU SEE ON TV

Writer / Neal G. Moore . Photographer / Brenda Walter Staples

It was a typically hot, humid summer day when an ominous emergency call crackled across the Fishers Fire Department radio. “We are on the scene of a two-story residence with heavy smoke showing.“ Kyle Thomas’ ears perked up, and for good reason. “I’ve heard thousands of fire calls go out and addresses come across the scanner,” the WTHR assignment manager remembers. “And this particular address caught my attention—because it was my own. That’s something you don’t want to hear, and something I’ll never forget.” The TV news guru was about to step into his own newscast. This is a story about television. Specifically, an examination of how TV newscasts get made. It’s a peek behind the curtain at the Ball State graduate who—along with a veteran news team—decides what you see on the local news, and a recounting of the time when he became the news story. For 15 years Thomas has enjoyed a birds-eye view of the WTHR newsroom, perched at the assignment desk on an elevated platform that is the epicenter of every news story, weather forecast and sports report you’ve watched on Channel 13, scanned on WTHR.com or scrolled on your mobile device. “He’s one of those key utility players that you trust, that you depend on,” says Kathy Hostetter, WTHR news director. “He’s going to make good decisions. He knows our purpose.”

As assignment manager Thomas oversees the 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week operation of what he calls the traffic control center of Eyewitness News. “Our five-person assignment team is responsible for maintaining and keeping track of reporters, photographers, giving them stories, helping with research and assisting producers,” Kyle explains. In short, virtually nothing makes the air or the web without Thomas knowing about it. (Full disclosure: this writer is a WTHR employee.) A consistent curiosity among viewers is how TV stations like WTHR decide what to cover on local newscasts. It’s a fair question considering the enormous amount of information that is collated daily from hundreds of sources. “It’s a team effort—not just me or the desk. It’s producers, managers, photographers, and web editors,” Kyle is quick to note. During morning and afternoon meetings, story ideas are weighed for their news value and community impact. “We’re trying to find stories that affect people. We’re constantly filtering things,” says Thomas. Information pours into the newsroom: public relations releases, telephone calls, emails, tweets, website posts and public safety emergencies that unfold in real-time over the 20 or so police and fire scanners that are monitored continuously. All of it goes into a kind of vetting funnel from which the best mix of news and information trickles out. And that trickle becomes the tsunami of Channel 13 content that never stops flowing.

atFishers.com / JUNE 2015 / FISHERS COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / 27

Hostetter says that among Kyle’s greatest assets is the ability to multitask—often manifesting as ‘Hey Kyle’ moments. Hey Kyle, can you find this? Hey Kyle, is there a mug shot? “Hey Kyle is uttered a lot in this newsroom—for the right reasons because they know that he will get the information,” says his news director. “Kyle is the one person who, when he takes a day off, it has the greatest impact on the functioning of the newsroom,” says anchor Anne Marie Tiernon matter-of-factly. “Calm under pressure, juggling many balls, many stories—many elements of everything that we do, and he stays calm, positive and professional. A true rock star.” There are a couple of TV news myths that Thomas wants to bust. “One I get is, ‘It seems like you just focus on bad news stories.’ We love good stories about people, and try to find that balance,” the Fishers resident explains. “But bad things do happen, and to live in an informed society, that’s our job to keep you informed about what’s going on.” Then there are the supposed political and editorial newsroom agendas. Thomas firmly denies they exist. “Journalists are trained to find both sides of the story. You need to stay in the middle, tell both sides and let your viewers decide. You’re there to tell the story, not be a part of it,” Thomas declares. But in 2006, that’s exactly what Thomas was—the news story. Remember the scanner traffic on that stormy June afternoon? It was lightning and it had set Kyle’s house on fire. “I immediately left the station,” Thomas recounts. A self-avowed news geek, he had a scanner in his car. “I was able to listen to that play out over the

scanner. It seemed like it took two hours to get home. I think it hit me the most when I got to 116th and Olio Road and I could see the smoke. At that point I knew this was a good-sized fire.” Fortunately, Kyle’s wife and then three-year-old son were unharmed, but the fire did about $150,000 in damage. “TV crews [from Channel 6 and 13] came up there. I was interviewed. It was different being on the other side of it. But I also understood they had a job to do.” Thomas notes how different today’s newsroom is thanks to social media and mobile technology. What hasn’t changed is the role of viewers, who Thomas says are valued, and yes, are listened to. “Some of the biggest stories we’ve covered have come from viewer emails, from tweets, from phone calls,” he notes. “I think people pretty much know what’s newsworthy and what’s not. Our viewers are smart people. When you see something happening, take a picture of it, call us and we’ll check it out.” Who knows? It might just make it on the news—same time, same station. Neal G. Moore has more than 40 years of media and communications experience, including TV news anchoring and reporting in Indianapolis. For more information, visit NealMoore.com.

ENVISIONING THE FUTURE WITH

LAUNCH FISHERS

M

oving to their new building in late summer, Launch Fishers will expand their square footage from 16,000 to 52,000, but the greatest benefit is the exponential growth potential for their members through networking and strategic connections. The unique working environment that Launch Fishers has created facilitates a multitude of opportunities that would otherwise not exist. Recently, Jason Hutcheson and Carolyn Byard, co-founders of Iconic Digital, partnered with fellow Launch member Darye Henry of Reborn Code for the Hamilton East Public Library’s website. “Here at Launch, we’ve got a deep talent pool of creative thinkers, and I could simply lean out of my office space and ask down the hall if anyone does custom web app development and a few would speak up,” shares Hutcheson. “The collaboration with Reborn Code is one of the great partnerships we have made that would not have been likely without Launch’s existence.” Iconic Digital has grown to four employees since joining Launch. Iconic Digital currently occupies one of two dedicated office spaces available in the original co-working space. Once the new building is complete, a total of 18 offices of various capacity will be available to burgeoning companies. Iconic Digital grew to the point that they were looking outside for space when approached by John Wechsler to move into the dedicated space vacated by Bluebridge. “It’s nice to have a standard place that you come to every day,” says Hutcheson. “I truly feel we wouldn’t have grown to where we are now without the supportive entrepreneurial environment at Launch.” Reborn Code is another successful example of growth fostered by the relationships forged within the walls of Launch. Founder Darye Henry is a 2015 Hackathon* Award Winning developer who joined Launch to immerse himself with other creative people. “Working in your own company office gets lonely sometimes,” confesses Henry. “And this isolation can be overwhelming, so joining Launch was the best thing I have ever done. My business really started taking off when I started coming to Launch every day.” As a result of the networking at Launch, Henry’s company now has grown to a team of eight.

*A Hackathon is an event in which computer programmers collaborate intensively on software projects that typically last between a day and a week. Sponsored by the State of Indiana and Indiana Office of Technology, there are three Hack events this year, and the first event for 2015 that Reborn Code won was specifically targeted for Homeland Security and IDEM. Reborn Code, partnering with Agency 360 (another Launch member), won the IDEM Challenge, creating an online permit process with a template for integrating rules and procedures such as land and water permits. Reborn Code created a winning system that was more than just document management; it allowed IDEM to define their own permit application process through software. twitter.com/HackIndiana

“You get to be around these creative, innovative types, and when you get all these people in one room, something great is bound to happen,” says Henry. “Then on top of that, there’s lots of mentorship and learning from others. It’s been a really good experience.” Launch is a major draw to the area, so much so that the Henry family recently bought a home and is relocating to Fishers. Henry, in addition to coding, is a musician. He plays guitar and piano. “Typically music is better with a band because each musician is uniquely gifted,” shares Henry. "That’s what Launch is to me in an entrepreneurial sense.” “Without Launch, we would have all been working out of our homes, out of Starbucks or in random low-rent districts, struggling,” says Hutcheson. “Here in the middle of Fishers, you throw all of these companies together, and we all gain efficiency. We have a tremendous competitive advantage.” According to Hutcheson and agreed upon by other members of Launch, the environment propels the entire learning curve, then takes it to the next level where you have companies partnering on different jobs like the library website. “There are a number of companies working on a lot of big stuff in here,” shares Hutcheson. “It impacts the entire community.” “If I have to point to any one thing that we have done that I am most proud of, it is Launch Fishers,” says Pete Peterson, Fishers City Council President and one of the founding Board members of Launch Fishers. “I couldn’t be happier with the move to the new building. This is the smartest thing we have done as a town/city.”

to the new building, it will be one of, if not the, largest in the country, right here in Fishers. It’s a place to network and foster growth while keeping the competitive edge of the masses. “It’s natural for highly motivated entrepreneurs to grow and propel their businesses,” says Launch founder John Wechsler. “It’s not about one doing it alone and having access to a conference room. These people work together for a common good.” “With the move to the new space, Launch Fishers will be partnering with a couple exciting new ventures,” says Wechsler. “And we believe with this expansion, we will certainly be head of the class.” Ball State University will take up a substantial area of dedicated space for The Center For Entrepreneurship and Innovation. BSU faculty and staff will be immersed into the Launch Fishers environment, which also creates immersion opportunities for experiential learning for their students. Innovative thinking, recognizing opportunity and managing risk are the foundational characteristics for the BSU Entrepreneurship Concentration. The already nationally-ranked program is about to get even better. Expanding their reach outside of their Entrepreneurial Center, The Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation is about to have an added competitive advantage.

Currently there are over 500 individual members from over 300 companies co-working at Launch Fishers.

With the move to a larger building, Launch flexes its muscles by opening their arms wider, welcoming greater possibilities for its members and their newly established partnerships. Directions to the new Launch building are to follow Technology Lane to Visionary Way. This clearly depicts the moral compass of entrepreneurs who could not have named their streets more appropriately.

“We now have an entrepreneur ecosystem that will help propel the community at large,” says Hutcheson. And he’s right. Launch is not really a business incubator; it is a co-working space, and with the move

Decked Out in White Wines

Writer / Kurt Wieneke . Photographer / Brian Brosmer

W

armer weather is here, so it’s time to have a glass (or two) of white wine out on the deck. Wine always seems more enjoyable to me when I drink it outdoors. I don’t know why, but let’s chalk it up to that’s where it comes from. Winemaking is just a way of getting the grapes from the vine into the glass.

ALBARINO

Here are some white wines to seek out this summer:

SAUVIGNON BLANC

RIESLING

The main thing to remember is to find one from Germany where this grape shines best. Look for the three (increasing) levels of sweetness levels listed on the label – kabinett, spatlese and auslese. If none of these are listed, it’s probably a Qualitatswein (or QbA) in the fine print, which is the entry level and also a good starting point. A couple to look for would be the Leitz Dragonstone or the ‘Dr. L’ (Loosen Bros.).

This Spanish white wine (and grape) is a delight even to the most jaded of connossieurs. If you like Chardonnay, you will also like Albarino because it has a similar textural profile (I call it ‘fatness’). Pour a glass of chilled Albarino at your next outing, and you’ll be traveling to Spain without the airfare.

You have a lot of regions to choose from when shopping for Sauvignon Blanc – California, New Zealand and (wait for it…) yes, even Bordeaux. As far as California, I really like Geyser Peak’s version – very fruity with good balancing acidity. My sister-in-law likes the New Zealand versions because they have a more concentrated and in-your-face style. But why not go traditional? A classic White Bordeaux is real deal Sauvignon Blanc.

PINOT GRIS

Translated as “gray pinot,” this refers to the hint of gray color in this grape’s skin. There are three regions where this wine is most popular. Pinot Grigio is the Italian version. Pinot Gris from the Alsace region of France is the textbook version. But hold the presses – the ones from Oregon are a true revelation with a fruit-forward style that will have you smacking your lips. Try the King Estate or the ‘A to Z’ Winery for starters. Where can I find these wines, you might ask? Well, you can probably find a decent Riesling or Sauvignon Blanc in your local supermarket. Outside of that, the best place to find these types of wines is your local wine merchant or a larger liquor store chain. When you do find one, hit the deck and enjoy the sunset!

FEED YOUR HOUSEHOLD LIKE A MASTER CHEF WITHOUT THE HASSLE Writer / Pete Walkey . Photographer / Keeley Miller

Fresh Artistry is a service that delivers locally designed recipes and fresh preportioned ingredients to your home. They help you make chef-grade meals for your family without the hassle. Founder Tom Blessing (IU grad and former investment banker in New York City) grew frustrated with his lifestyle. For three years, he worked long hours and lived off

restaurant food. His third year, he gained 20 pounds, felt terrible and needed to make some changes. After wishing a service existed that would help him cook fresh meals quickly and easily at home, he quit his job, moved back to the motherland and started Fresh Artistry. He designed Fresh Artistry for the busy household who wants an easy way to eat

exceptional, fresh, nutritious meals around the table at home. He fully believes the idea that meals are best shared with each other, so he built a service that helps busy people do that. The way it works is you set up your account online. Then you just sit back and watch spectacular recipes show up on your doorstep. They deliver once per week with three recipes per box.

34 / FISHERS COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / JUNE 2015 / atFishers.com

Each week, there is a menu of seven new recipes to choose from. You can select three recipes per week or be surprised and have them selected for you. You can login and customize each delivery or put it on autopilot. There’s a Sunday midnight deadline to customize your menu for the week. They studied a group of Indiana families to test this out. On average, the families ate at home five times per week, and the two-person households ate at home four times per week. They figure two times per week are either leftovers, pizza or “get dinner on your own.” They want to help with the remaining three times per week when you want to eat together. Your delivery arrives in an insulated box with refrigerated gel packs via a delivery service. If you’re not home when it arrives, no problem. They include enough refrigerant to last overnight on your porch without issue. Tom values the freshness and ingredient control of cooking but is extremely sensitive to convenience. They target recipes made in 30 minutes start to finish because their customers want to look like a master chef to their family without time-consuming prep on the front end. Many of their fresh vegetables come prechopped and spices pre-blended, and recipes are simplified and tested. The ingredients are locally grown when possible. They source Indiana-grown beef and poultry through Moody’s Butcher Shop. No hormones, preservatives or antibiotics are ever added. Their produce is frequently organic, local when possible and always fresh. It’s restaurant grade. The cost for their two-serving plan is $19.99 per meal ($59.97 per box of three recipes). Their family plan is $29.99 per meal ($89.97 per box of three recipes) and feeds two adults and two to three children. They chose this pricing because it’s nestled right between the price customers might pay going out to eat (higher) and the price they pay getting their food from the grocery and doing everything themselves.

They add value by delivering ingredients, organizing all the ingredients and helping customers experience the expertise of a master chef. They targeted $5-$6 per serving. Their research revealed that a family of five might spend $150-$200 per week on groceries, so they wanted to fit into that budget. While there are cheaper ways to feed families, there isn’t an easier way to get fresh,

chef-grade meals on the table at home. Joining Tom on Fresh Artistry’s management team is Brian Carriger and Chef Nick Carter. Nick has been the chef for Wolfgang Puck Catering and Black Swan Brewpub and currently is an Adjunct Professor at Ivy Tech Culinary School. Visit freshartistry.com to learn more.

YMI BENEFITING OUR KIDS & COMMUNITY Writer / Laurie Quinn

Darren Heil, Founder and Director of Community Engagement 36 / FISHERS COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / JUNE 2015 / atFishers.com

The school year has come to an end, and visions of floaties and lemonade are fresh on our minds. While most people are gearing up for some fun and relaxation, Darren Heil and his team at Youth Mentoring Initiative (YMI) are buckling down to meet their 2020 Initiative goals. YMI provides mentoring for students by building relationships based on encouragement and empathy. The 2020 Initiative is to provide one-on-one support to 600 students by mentoring in grades 5-12 in the HSE schools. “It is important to get in as young an age as possible to build the long-lasting relationships and the opportunities these relationships will produce for the mentors and the mentees in our community,” replied Todd Zimmerman, Fishers City Councilor At-Large. The two newest additions to include YMI in their schools are Riverside Intermediate and Sandcreek Intermediate. The principals at these schools are beyond excited to begin this journey with YMI. The principal at Riverside Intermediate stated, “Building relationships is our top priority. This is the foundation for RSI in creating a safe, comfortable educational environment where all children thrive. YMI will give us the opportunity to naturally enrich this foundation even more.”

Right now as school is winding down, YMI is gearing up for the mentor training taking place this August. There is still time for you be a part of this life-changing organization! There is a misconception that mentoring is only for troubled students, but it is for anyone who wishes for more support! “YMI is filling a unique role in students’ lives in our community. This is especially helpful to those students who may be dealing with extra circumstances in their lives, including some mental health issues that we have become increasingly more and more aware of recently. Having the support of a mentor is one of the key pieces, and YMI is uniquely positioned to fill this role,” voiced Curt Walters, lead pastor for Crosspoint Church and member of the Mental Health Task Force in Fishers. For more information on YMI, visit ymionline.org or call 317-370-9070.

“They have to be able to think fast and be effective. They are handed pieces of equipment which could be anything from a rubber band to a set of weights, and they have to come up with an instructional video using their piece of ‘equipment’ on the spot.” The series also features some physical challenges for the contestants such as carrying a 75 pound dumbbell 20 yards while balancing a cup of water on the other fist. The judges watch and critique. The winner of “The Next Top Trainer” will star in their own fitness DVD and be a fitness/training advisor to Men’s Health magazine. This season’s “Next Top Trainer” kicked off in March with a nationwide call for entries and a live casting event and is set to kick off online June 16. You can watch the series by tuning into MensHealthNextTopTrainer.com where the contestants will be going head-to-head in challenges with the best fitness pros in the business.

FISHERS TRAINER NAMED JUDGE FOR ONLINE REALITY COMPETITION Writer / Pat Carlini

Indianapolis Fitness and Sports Training (IFAST) co-owner Bill Hartman is enjoying his role these days as a judge for an online reality competition series called “The Next Top Trainer.” Hartman is one of the nation’s leading physical therapists and sports performance coaches and was recruited by the series creators, Men’s Health magazine and EAS Sports Nutrition, to judge eight contestants in an eight week series to find the next top trainer. The competition is looking for the most skilled, most inspiring and most talented fitness expert in the country!

Hartman specializes in orthopedics and sports medicine and has received advanced training in treatment of spinal disorders, shoulder and knee rehabilitation, core conditioning and soft tissue disorders. Hartman says whether it is physical therapy you need or just looking for a good exercise routine, do your homework when shopping for a trainer. “Look at education first of all,” says Hartman. “Certification does not equal qualification.” A degree would be preferred, and they should be able to determine your individual needs. Cookie cutter programs reduce the chance of success. They also should provide you a low risk opportunity to try out their services before you sign up. Visit IndianapolisFitnessAndSportsTraining.com/ifast-physicaltherapy for more information on Hartman. You can also follow Hartman on Twitter @BillHartman_net and on Facebook, IFAST Physical Therapy. IFAST is located at 9402 Uptown Dr., Suite 1600, in Fishers, or call 317-578-0998.

Pat Carlini is an experienced television/radio personality associated with NBC in Indianapolis and the syndicated Bob & Tom Show. She can be contacted at patcarlini.com.

“It’s a lot of fun, but it’s hard work for the contestants!” says Hartman. 38 / FISHERS COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / JUNE 2015 / atFishers.com
