Fishers Hospital Gets a New Name | Neal Moore In 1881 the Daughters of Charity arrived in Indianapolis with hearts full for Christian service and pockets decidedly empty. The nuns’ collective “wealth” was $34.77. They had come at the request of Bishop Francis Silas Chatard to operate a Catholic hospital in Indiana. The Bishop gave them $50 more to begin their mission: converting an abandoned seminary into a hospital. Slowly, across the decades, the hospital expanded both its physical footprint and caring touch in the city. One can only imagine the wonder with which these humble servants would view today’s St.Vincent hospital system. The latest iteration is the newly-named St.Vincent Fishers Hospital, which opened full services April 8, at 13861 Olio Road. “Our name change reflects our expansion from a freestanding outpatient healthcare facility to an expanded inpatient hospital,” explained Gary Fammartino, administrator, St.Vincent Fishers Hospital. “We listened to
cooper Tire
the community, and our expansion has been guided by what families in Fishers, Noblesville and surrounding areas told us they wanted most.” The 110,000-square-foot, 50-bed hospital expansion is focused on wellness, women’s health and family health and includes: 30 medical/surgical beds, 10 labor-deliveryrecovery-post-partum beds, and 10 observation beds. The expansion complements an existing emergency department, surgery department, all-digital imaging center, primary care offices, pediatric specialists, physical therapy and an adult and pediatric sleep lab. Hospital leadership had anticipated such an expansion when St.Vincent initially located in Fishers. “We began serving this community in 2008 with the first freestanding emergency department and comprehensive outpatient services,” said Fammartino. “Our goal back then was to eventually expand upon these services to include inpatient care when our community determined it was time.” According to information provided by the hospital, the facility offers many spa-like amenities “because that’s what today’s patients expect.” St.Vincent Fishers has applied for LEED certification (an environmental design designation) with the aim of providing patients, visitors and others with a healthier environment. fishers.stvincent.org

Kim Nealon, chief nursing officer, noted the special attention given to St.Vincent Fishers’ labor-delivery and recovery rooms. “Included in a single room are a pull-down Murphy bed, a walk-in shower, and spa tubs that are available for labor and postpartum recovery. Our Center for Women and Infants, and medical-surgical suites are supported by in-house physicians 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” Nealon said.

The new facility provides 24-hour room service for patients, a cafeteria with indoor-outdoor dining, and a chapel and spiritual family waiting area that are “integral to our hospital’s faith-based values system,” explained Nealon. Fammartino emphasized that St.Vincent Fishers continues to devote a substantial portion of its budgets for charity care and community benefit locally, regionally and internationally in keeping with the tradition of St. Vincent de Paul. “Our hospital’s mission is to treat all persons with special attention to the poor and vulnerable,” said Fammartino. “Our core values of service to the poor, reverence, integrity, wisdom, creativity and dedication are the foundation of who we are and what our communities have come to know as the Spirit of Caring.” More information about St.Vincent Fishers is available online at fishers.stvincent.org.

Autumn Letendre
Local Resident Honors Families of Fallen Soldiers | Pat Carlini In the month of May, we celebrate Memorial Day. It is a time to commemorate all men and women who have died in military service for the United States. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials on this day to pay homage to those who fought for their country. For one local resident, the month of May has an even deeper meaning – it is a time to pay homage to her husband who paid the ultimate sacrifice for his country. Captain Brian Letendre was killed on May 3, 2006, during operations in Iraq. He left behind his wife, Autumn, and a young son, Dillon, to carry on life’s journey. It was a painful time for Autumn but, fortunately, she had returned to Central Indiana to be closer to family when her husband left for Iraq. During her darkest hours, she and her son were, at least, surrounded by family and friends. “We had always talked about what to do if that day ever comes,” says Autumn. “But, you are never really prepared for the devastating news that you have lost a loved one.” Over time, Autumn Letendre turned her tragedy into triumph by finding ways to help other military families dealing with not only the pain of losing a loved one, but also the other unique stresses placed on them by deployments, combat, and just day-to-day military life. She eventually formed the Golden Star USA Foundation – a nonpartisan nonprofit organization headquartered in Fishers, Indiana, which supports America’s active duty and honorably discharged troops and their dependents through education, lectures, financing, and other resources. Autumn is also very proud to be organizing an annual fund-raising event called the “Yellow Ribbon of Love Gala” which brings military families to Indiana from all over to help raise funds for projects such as “DREAM” – a scholarship for the military child which helps towards the dream of going to college. The Annual Gala will be held at the Indiana War Memorial on Saturday, June 29, from 7:00-10:30 p.m. It features a buffet dinner, cash bar, live band, live auction, Fund a Dream, raffle, surprise celebrities, and entertainment. General admission tickets are $100 per person. Attire is formal. Tickets to attend the VIP Cocktail may 2013

Reception and Gala are $150 per person. The VIP Reception will be located in the Green Room from 6:30-7:30 p.m. “Sometimes the loss of a loved one means a financial loss to a family and these scholarships help fund a military child’s college education,” says Autumn. Autumn travels a lot these days as a motivational speaker for different groups across the country including many school groups. She enjoys singing at functions; and in 2009, she caught the attention of the country music scene when she wrote and recorded an album called “Raise Your Flag.” The album was based on a collection of poems she wrote about her experiences as the wife of a military man and losing her husband. So this May, Autumn asks that we all “raise our flag” for the men and women serving our country and for the military families hoping their loved ones safely return home. For more information, you can go online at www.thegoldenstarusa.com or email Autumn at info@thegoldenstarusa.com. Pat Carlini is an experienced television/radio personality associated with NBC in Indianapolis and the syndicated Bob & Tom Show. She can be contacted at www.patcarlini.com.

Initially, Scott wasn’t thrilled with the word and shape memory exercises he was doing with his cognitive trainer. After all, it was taking away from his play time. But he soon warmed to the tasks as his processing strength and efficiency improved and the LearningRx trainers trained him how to overcome mental blocks, and how not to get frustrated and quit. “And, I learned how to count when you get mad,” said a smiling Scott. McCauley cautioned parents not to wait before taking action. “The longer a child practices bad habits, the more they become ingrained and the lost learning opportunity cost multiplies. Why not address problems early on when they are small, rather than later?” | Neal Moore
t age three, Scott Walker was diagnosed with epilepsy. Doctors also discovered a malformation of his brain and warned his parents, Kari and Bryan, that as Scott grew older he likely would struggle with learning disabilities. By fourth grade, Scott was falling behind his Center Grove classmates, and the Walkers began looking for tutoring. That’s when Kari discovered LearningRx. “I was searching online, found LearningRx, started reading, and was amazed at what they could do,” Kari shared. “I knew this was different than tutoring, so we scheduled an evaluation.”
A
Kari and Bryan enrolled Scott in a cognitive (brain) training program with LearningRx, located at 9767 Fall Creek Road. “When we discussed it with his school we’d get rolled eyes and funny looks,” remembered Bryan. “They treated us like over-reacting parents.” Lynne McCauley, LearningRx director, has found it to be a common response. “Teachers will often say the child will outgrow the problem, and for some things, that’s true. Underlying information processing issues are not something kids will outgrow.,” she explained. “Much like an outdated computer, the child is not assimilating, processing, storing, combining or retrieving information accurately and efficiently. They are missing out on content and will get farther and farther behind the longer the problem persists. That leads to poor academic performance, frustration and self- esteem issues.” When Scott started the LearningRx program, it took him several hours to write each of 15 spelling words three times when doing homework. “It killed me to see him struggle,” said Kari. “I was skeptical at first - not that I thought it wouldn’t work, but that it was going to be really hard.”
Today, Scott rarely brings lesson work home. Instead, he’s now able to do most of it at school. Math problems and reading are now much easier since he learned concentration skills at LearningRx. And, Scott - who once struggled so with school is now thinking about becoming a veterinarian. His parents have also noticed a big improvement in his diving skills. “His coach is able to catch his eye on the platform, motion the changes he wants Scott to make, and he gets it. Before LearningRx, that wouldn’t have happened” says Bryan. “it’s helped him academically and athletically.” McCauley emphasized the importance of knowing why your child is struggling in school, and in picking the right solution. “If you’re not getting answers from the school, you need to investigate what’s going on. Bring your student in for a simple cognitive assessment,” she urged. “Arming yourself with the right information will allow you to make an informed decision about how to address the problem.” Neal Moore has over 30 years of media and communications experience, including TV news anchoring and reporting in Indianapolis. | Neal Moore hose of us smitten by the Indy 500 have come to expect certain traditions at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) on race day: the singing of Back Home Again in Indiana, the balloon release, and the call to Start Your Engines. There’s another, equally embedded tradition that is celebrating its golden anniversary this year – an organization that traces its roots, not surprisingly, to Tony Hulman: The Gordon Pipers.
T
In 1962, Indianapolis veterinarian Dr. Wallace Gordon Diehl founded the Scottish-inspired parade unit after a split from the Murat Highlanders pipe band. At the time, the Highlanders required members to be male and more than six-feet-two inches in height. Desiring a more inclusive option, Diehl and four other Highlanders defected to create an opportunity for their daughters and shortof-stature sons to march in a pipe band. Casting about for a moniker, they settled on founder Doc Diehl’s middle name and became the Gordon Pipers. IMS patriarch Tony Hulman saw them perform at a car show and was impressed by the crowd they’d drawn. “Everybody loved ’em!” according to Doug Hardwick, the current president of the Gordon Pipers. Hulman invited the troupe to perform at the 1963 Indy 500 and at that year’s Victory Banquet, he vowed that as long as his family owned the Speedway, the Gordon Pipers would
be a featured attraction. Thus was born the Indianapolis 500 Gordon Pipers. A not-for-profit organization, the Gordon Pipers have a $40,000 budget funded by performance fees from patrons like IMS, the Indianapolis Colts (as the Horseshoe Pipes and Drums), numerous parades in Indiana, and beyond. “We’re ambassadors for the Indy 500 and the City of Indianapolis,” explained Hardwick. Their reach is international, too, having marched in Scotland and Canada. “Some of us are talking about traveling to Afghanistan to play for the American troops there,” shared Hardwick. In 1968, Connie Summers began as a Gordon dancer, then added bagpipes to her repertoire the following year. Her daughter, Melissa Whybrew, began performing at age three and a half and is now the dance sergeant and a tenor drummer. “I was born into the band and grew up in it,” said Whybrew. “Now, I have a four-month-old son and he’s destined to be a Piper.” Summers, who once fell during a performance (“I’ve never forgotten that!”), noted there are several children and grandchildren of current members who are Gordon Pipers. “Doug and I grew up together,” reminisced Summers. “The band is very much a close-knit family.” So you’d like to be a Gordon Piper? Well, first you’ll learn their songs by blowing into a chanter. Resembling a wooden recorder (or the Flutophone

you squawked on in elementary school), the chanter has several finger holes and is used to play the melody. Next, you’ll learn to manipulate the air bag for consistent sound, followed by marching lessons. Within a year, you’ll be performing in parades. Outfitting the pipers, drummers, and dancers costs about $2,000 per person. No one is paid to perform – the reward comes with travel opportunities. Band members range in age from 13 to 60 years, and membership hovers around 40 people. “It’s a diverse group including doctors, a retired Marine, police officers – it’s an amazing mix of people,” marveled Hardwick. Extras are necessary because players rotate in and out as their schedules permit. “People have faith, family, and jobs,” said Hardwick, who’s always interested in new members. The band offers instructional classes every three months or so. “Potential pipers have to commit to weekly practices. We like young players, but several recent additions have been age 50 or more. A 72-yearold drummer just retired.”

When the Gordon Pipers perform, Geist is well represented. In addition to Hardwick, Tim Bastion, Sharon Hudgens and her daughters, Jessica and Laura, reside in Geist neighborhoods. “I like the opportunities that being a Gordon Piper has opened up,” said Laura Hudgins. “We just played at the Florida Indycar race, and it was fun seeing the race and being next to the drivers.”

When it comes to home improvement and expansion projects, Patio Enclosures and Stanek Windows are two brands that have long been synonymous with quality and durability. Both Clevelandborn brands are now part of Great Day Improvements, LLC – a residential /commercial remodeler and manufacturer offering a portfolio of tailored home improvement solutions. “This is one of several initiatives we’ve executed to transform and expand Great Day Improvements into a one-stop home improvement company for our customers,” said Tom Williams , General Manager of Great Day Improvements in Fishers, IN. “The Stanek brand has been in existence for 60 years and in terms of quality, it is an excellent complement to our legendary Patio Enclosures brand. We are excited about the continued growth of our organization and the additional product offering we will be able to extend to our customers.” Since 1966, Patio Enclosures has custom-manufactured and installed over 250,000 sunrooms, solariums and screen rooms nationwide. And they are known for being some of the best rooms on the market. The same is true for Stanek Windows, which has been producing exquisitely crafted replacement windows, engineered to outperform both the elements and the competition, since 1953.

| Beth Taylor Although all of our nominees are deserving of being the Mom of the Year, the winner, Claudia Davis, mother of three daughters, stands out as the only finalist to be nominated by a non-family member. Her compassionate and nurturing spirit lead to her current role as a breast health navigator at Community Hospital North, where she serves as an advocate for breast cancer patients. Her motherly instincts extend beyond her own family, which is what makes her our Fishers Mom of the Year. Breast cancer survivor Christi Poske’s 11-year-old daughter, Cassidy, wrote a school essay about Christi’s battle with breast cancer, citing Claudia as a true hero who helped her mom triumph over the disease. Claudia’s reassurance and positive attitude made her feel safe in a time of uncertainty. Christi sent the essay to Fishers Community Newsletter to nominate Claudia for Fishers Mom of the Year. “When I think back about my fight with breast cancer, there is no one else I would want by my side other than Claudia. Chemotherapy, surgeries, or simply a basic appointment, she always made me feel safe, and that I was going to be OK. To this day, when I get scared she is always ‘my run-to’ person,” said Poske. Claudia and her husband, John, and their three daughters, moved from Elkhart, Indiana to Fishers in 1991. In short order, Claudia became a school volunteer and then school nurse. In 1996, Claudia went to work at St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital, focusing on home care. “Building relationships with home care patients was very rewarding,” said Davis. During her father’s battle with cancer, Claudia recognized that the oncology nurses were the most helpful resource to patients and their families. She joined Community Hospital North in 2000 and became certified in oncology and breast health through the Oncology Nursing Society. Claudia has received several awards for nursing including 2004 winner of Community Health Network’s Nursing Excellence award for patient-focused care. In 2007, she was awarded the Indiana Hometown Hero Award by the Indiana Pacers for her work with breast cancer patients. She is also a member of the Community Health Network Society for Nursing Excellence. After hours, Claudia actively supports breast cancer events and fundraisers, including the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and the Megan S. Ott Foundation. She serves on the Board of Directors for Indiana Women In Need Foundation, a support organization for women enduring breast cancer treatment.
After becoming aware of their mother’s nomination, Claudia’s daughters got on board with the idea quickly. All three have always known that they share an amazing mother. “I look up to mom as a role model in patient care. Since we both work at Community North, I hear from patients just how special she is,” said Jodi Statzer, Claudia’s oldest daughter. Second daughter Kelli Davis said, “I wasn’t actually surprised by the nomination, just unaware. My mother has always been an inspiration. She is an amazing person who truly cares about other people.” Courtney Davis, Claudia’s youngest daughter, added, “Living with a chronic illness myself, I know how valuable it is to have an advocate like my mom in the medical system. She inspires me to want to become an advocate for others suffering from Lupus.” Married for more than 40 years, Claudia and John look forward to more vacations with her granddaughters, Chloe and Josie, in the years ahead. As the winner of the Fishers Mom of the Year contest, Claudia will receive the following gifts and services from some amazing local sponsors: • Hair makeover, nails and makeup from Reeda Todd Hair Salon • Mother’s pendant necklace from Geist Jewelers • Month long membership to 7e Fit Spa • Day spa package from Message Envy • Bouquet of flowers from McNamara Florist • Dinner for two at Murphy’s Pubhouse • Wine basket from Tasteful Times Congratulations again Claudia! You are an inspiration to us all! Beth Taylor is an experienced freelance editor and writer whose work has appeared in several community magazines during her 15-year career. Crafting a freelance business has provided her the opportunity to stay at home with her two young daughters.

facebook home Sean Mulroy Sean has worked in the technology industry even longer than the 8 years he and his family have lived in Fishers. The size and scope of Facebook is staggering when you step back and take a look at it. The world’s most popular social network claims over 1 billion subscribers – that’s roughly 1 in every 7 people on the planet. If Facebook was a country, only China and India would be larger in terms of population. Of those over 1 billion subscribers, some 640 million of them access the service via a mobile device while the Facebookowned picture service, Instagram, counts over 90 million subscribers in its ranks. I could go on with stats showing the massive scale of Facebook, but these alone should be enough to make clear why there was such attention paid to and excitement over the fact that Facebook was hosting a “mobile event” on April 4. While many in the mobile industry had long predicted that a “Facebook Phone” would be announced, what we got instead was “Facebook Home,” something a bit different – and potentially much more wide-ranging in its impact. The scale of that impact won’t be known for some time, but the more immediate question here is really twofold: what is Facebook Home and should I care? Let’s take a look and see if we can get a little more clarity around Mark Zuckerberg’s newest offering. The April 4 event may have confused some observers due to its dual nature. On stage, two different announcements were made – and it wasn’t always entirely clear where the line dividing them lay. The simple part of the event was the introduction of the “First,” a mid-range Android phone made by HTC. In and of itself, this would usually generate little more than yawns from the tech press, as mid-range Android phones are available from a myriad of manufacturers across the industry and one more was nothing to write home about. However, it was the second announcement that made the first one special. The First would be the first handset to support Facebook Home when it launched a week later. Facebook Home was the real reason everyone was paying attention to the event and was certainly the star of the show. Instead of creating a brand new operating system from scratch along with the associated headaches of trying to put together a compelling catalog of applications (for comparison, Apple and Google App stores feature over 1 million apps each) as well as setting up a supply chain and developing a retail ecosystem that would support the offering, Facebook chose what was
What is Facebook Home?!?
behind Door #2 and built a “launcher” that sits on top of a standard Android handset. While the First was shown at the event, Facebook has made sure that devices like Samsung’s line of Galaxy phones would also support Home – almost instantly creating a massive base of available customers. That still doesn’t answer our questions of just what Home is and why we should care though, so let’s dig a little deeper. If Home isn’t a new phone and it isn’t a new Operating System, then just what is it? Well, a “launcher” in the world of Android means that Home is a layer that sits on top of what you are used to seeing on your current home screens. There are a number of technical details regarding just where a launcher ends and an OS begins, but for the end user, what it means is that once installed, your phone effectively becomes a Facebook Phone – regardless of what it was before. This means that once you have logged in with your Facebook account information, the launcher does the rest. Every time you turn on the screen, you will see a rotating collection of images posted by your Facebook friends as well as any recent status updates. It isn’t just a static display, either. You can swipe your way through these updates and you can “like” as well as comment on them directly from the lock screen. The lock screen also provides quick access to Facebook Messenger, and Home has redesigned the notifications system to make it much more visually pleasing and much simpler to triage all your alerts. The final highlight to note is the new messaging interface itself. Featuring “Chat Heads,” it presents a messaging overlay to anything you are doing on the phone with a circular “head” icon showing the person with whom you are interacting. Instead of interrupting your current task, though, the Chat Head makes the message “glanceable” by means of a snippet of the message and allows you swipe it away and deal with it later or switch to the Messaging app directly to engage in the conversation. While these are the highlights of Home, there are a number of other features that the new offering will bring – all while retaining your access to the core level OS and App functionality that Android already offers. Obviously, its relevance to a particular user will be based largely on how much he or she uses Facebook, but it certainly presents a very interesting and compelling model for other companies to present their own launchers in the future. Facebook has not announced availability of Home for devices other than the First, but expect to see invitations to install it on your device begin popping up over the next few months. plan that would elevate the need for up to 84 portable classroom trailers as the younger students move through the lower grades and enter high school. Rather than build a third high school in the HSE District, the proposed plan asks for $95,000,000 to expand the two current high school campuses as a cost savings measure. According to the district, this proposal would save $30,000,000 off the cost of building a third high school and save another $750,000 each year in operating costs by avoiding duplicate administration, extracurricular facilities, and activities.

How Will You Vote? Hamilton Southeastern School District Referendum | Whitney Mucha Although this May 7 isn’t a Presidential Primary Election year, registered voters living in the Hamilton Southeastern School District have an important reason to get out to the polls in high numbers. The HSE School District is seeking voter approval for $95,000,000 necessary to increase classroom space at both Hamilton Southeastern High School and Fishers High School for 2,000 more students. The majority of these additional 2,000 students are already enrolled in the school district in the elementary, middle school, and junior high grades. District leaders studied various solutions and gathered feedback from the community, parents, students, and educators. These combined factors resulted in a proposed
Unlike previous referendum questions, this question is much simpler to understand. Following is a sample of the question as it will appear on the ballot: Local Public Question: “Shall Hamilton Southeastern Schools issue bonds or enter into a lease to finance the expansion and related improvements of Fishers High School and HSE High School, which are estimated to cost not more than $95,000,000 and are estimated to increase the property tax rate for debt service by a maximum of $0.1353 per $100 of assessed value?” The property tax impact for voters has added a complexity

to this referendum due to the confusing State of Indiana property tax structure. Although all residents of the HSE School District who pay property taxes will contribute to the proposed additions, only homeowners who own property at or above the property tax cap will see an increase in tax bills. Because the district will be paying off old debt, those owners below the tax cap could see a decrease in property taxes. If the referendum passes, those same owners experiencing a tax decrease may return to current tax amounts due to the new debt replacing the old debt, essentially experiencing little or no change to their tax bills.

The district attempts to simplify the resulting property tax impact by offering homeowners the following examples for homes assessed at three levels. A home assessed at $195,000 would have no increase, a $230,000 home would come with a $12-per-month increase, and a $370,000 home would come with a $23-per-month increase. However, the exact impact will vary based on the assessed value of a home, the tax district where the property is located, and whether or not it is valued under the property tax cap.

need for 84 new portable classroom trailers. This additional space will provide the district an opportunity to have space that will support the shift in instruction to include more 21st century learning. While the new space will not cost any more money than traditional classroom space, it will solve the space issue of growing enrollment and offer senior academies at each location. All seniors will utilize this new instructional space in addition to classes and activities in other parts of the buildings. Underclassmen will also have opportunities to take classes in the academy and use the new facilities. The plan also includes the expansion of other areas to accommodate the increased volume by expanding fine arts, performing arts, and physical education areas. | Laurie Quinn inding time for your art is never easy, and with the birth of his third daughter this past January, artist Jeremy Mallov’s life has grown wonderfully chaotic. Jeremy Mallov has been painting professionally and teaching art for more than 10 years. He grew up in Indianapolis, attended North Central High School and continued his education at IU which is where his interests shifted from psychology to art and art education. Jeremy and his wife Elizabeth found a home in Fishers immediately after getting married and have lived there ever since. Now with 3 daughters under 5, Jeremy’s life as a father and as an artist are equally chaotic. Jeremy paints landscape paintings in oil paint and watercolors. In addition to his job teaching art at Amy Beverland Elementary in Lawrence Township, he also teaches after-school, evening, and summer art classes to kids and adults. Juggling the time requirements of creating art has always been difficult; even more so with the birth of his newborn in January. Jeremy’s landscape paintings are more than just beautiful scenes. Each picture evokes not only a time and place, but is also deeply symbolic to what is happening in his life. Jeremy’s Jamaican sunset paintings serve as metaphors for the complexities of marriage; while the new series of Hilton Head beach scenes, painted immediately after baby Katherine was born, are indicative of fresh beginnings and new life. Jeremy paints primarily with a palette knife instead of a brush, scraping the paint on in rich layers and blends, giving his paintings a unique texture and look.

Jeremy truly feels connected to
the community in Fishers; it is where he lives and where his daughters go to preschool. With every art show, Jeremy donates a portion of the proceeds to support a local food pantry. He uses his artwork to inspire his students, both young In the Surf and old, and donates several paintings a year to charitable causes, most recently to a moms club book benefit, which raised money for the Fishers library youth programs. S0 mark your calendars for Saturday, May 11th! Jeremy will host the opening reception to his newest art exhibition, “Love Your Mother: Art Inspired by Parenthood and Mother Nature.” The reception will be from 2-4pm at the Holliday Park Nature Center, located at 6363 Spring Mill Road in Indianapolis. The show features more than thirty new landscape paintings in oils and watercolors created from his travels around the country and explorations into local vistas. Jeremy’s artwork will remain on display at the Holliday Park Nature Center until the end of June. Parenthood is a major theme in the paintings, and all mothers will receive a 20% discount on all paintings and prints purchased on May 11, so bring your mother for an early Mother’s Day treat! The show is free, refreshments will be provided, and in addition to the wonderful playgrounds and hiking trails in Holliday Park, there will be art activities for children at the exhibition. Whether you’re looking for new art to buy, want to support local Fishers artists, or just want to meet an artist and enjoy a free gallery showing, the exhibition promises to be worthwhile. Visit his website, jeremymallovfineart. blogspot.com, for more information about the exhibition or summer classes and art camps.

Murphy's PubHouse
I
f you haven’t already discovered the gem of a place called Murphy’s PubHouse, nestled in the strip mall on the northeast corner of 116th Street and Olio Road, you’re in for a surprise! First off, let’s just say NO SMOKING. No need to worry about your hair or clothes reeking of smoke when you get home! You can’t help but notice the friendly owners, Ryan & Craig Stonebraker, whose philosophy is “get to know your customers, embrace the community, and treat your employees like family.” They possess a boyish enthusiasm about everything from the food they serve to the customers who visit them. You’ll meet these owners once, and they’ll remember you the next time you stop in – guaranteed – or your next meal is on the house. Okay, we exaggerated that a tad!
because there’s no blaring music. And you might like a place that doesn’t make you feel like you’re in the middle of a pick-up zone. To you singles out there – don’t let that keep you away…lol! This place is homey, fun, and comfortable – a neighborhood hangout serving up great food and spirits. On the night we visited, we were bellied up to the bar chatting away with the ever-so-funny bartender Dennis Bowling. If you’ve ever met Dennis, you’re sure to remember him and his signature deep
hearty laugh. He’s an outgoing character with a sarcastic flare always ready to engage in conversation. We asked him to fix us up with some specialties, and he served some beautiful martinis that were unforgettable! The first was his Salted Caramel Martini drizzled with chocolate and caramel sauces on the inside and outside of the glass rimmed with salt. Drinking this martini, OMG nothing like it! Your top lip tastes the salt and your bottom one tastes the caramel – now give me a drink! DELICIOUSNESS!! Oh wait! Were we not supposed to have dessert first?! Oopsie – well how about the next martini, The Drunk Shrimp. It’s an appetizer in a glass! The seasoned salted rim welcomes you to a martini that somewhat tastes like a Bloody Mary. The kicker with this martini is the jumbo horseradish-stuffed shrimp skewered along side a jalapeño-stuffed green olive. Wow! This drink really should be classified as an appetizer – YUM! While enjoying our cocktails, we couldn’t help but notice the older gentleman sitting next to us in the big red IU jacket. He was watching the #1 Hoosiers on one of the bar’s many TV screens. As we struck up a conversation with Frank, we learned that his son had just passed away the day prior. Frank didn’t want to be home alone. Murphy’s seemed to be the best place for him that night. He spoke to us about his
We’ve noticed the customers here are really varied. On one side of this PubHouse you’ll find the family-friendly restaurant, and on the other side you’ll find the bar. It’s at the bar where we noticed the eclectic clientele. At one table, you might find Lacrosse moms discussing the night’s game. At another table, you might find a group of neighbors discussing politics. At the bar, you’ll find people who came in with others or by themselves. The one thing you’ll appreciate is being able to hang out at a place where you can hear yourself talk 38

luck of the Irish was with us and the owner brought us some food of our own: Char Grilled North Atlantic Salmon, 4 ounces of mmm mmm good with sautéed teriyaki veggies. This large appetizer could easily be a no-guilt dinner! We’ve never seen a salmon teriyaki appetizer anywhere. It was tender and flaky, and we would definitely get it again. We also tried two of Murphy’s favorites – their Portabella Panini Melt and their Ham and Cheese Pretzel Panini. We had eaten the Portabella Panini here before, and we had already recommended
We also met Gary Politan a 25-year patron of the local Murphy’s restaurants, enjoying a spinach salad with a beautiful piece of grilled salmon laden with bacon bits and pecans. We wanted to dive right into that salad, but unfortunately, Gary wasn’t offering us even a bite. Fortunately, the

right decisions. I worked closely with them at UT. Now, I work closely with families, helping their kids. This is very fulfilling.” Ken and his wife, Amber, who’s a clinical manager for Access Scientific, reside in Fishers. He’s big on family. In fact, his kids also bear his name in their names: Makenzie (14), Kenley (6), and Deaken (2). The NCSA is headquartered in Chicago. One reason he chose Fishers, he said, was because of the schools and being in the Midwest. Plus, his best friend, Ryan Owners, a former coach at DePauw, lives in Fishers. Johnson is very street smart after growing up in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. “I was the youngest of 3 boys and raised by a single mother who was a teacher’s aide and later started her own bakery,” he said. “I had great support from friends and family in LA. Mom shaped me. Sports kept me out of trouble, and I had a lot of people help me stay on the right track.”
Ken Johnson: Here to Help | Mark Morrow From a basketball player, to a coach, to a scout, to breaking down videos, to sweeping floors and making sure kids work on graduating while with the Continental Basketball Association, to being the director of basketball operations at the University of Tennessee from 2005 to 2011, Ken Johnson has seen and done it all. He has four huge rings from success at various levels, including in the NCAA tournament with the Volunteers under Bruce Pearl. He also coached under Pearl at the University of Southern Indiana and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. But his most fulfilling award? His current job as a college sports recruiter for the National Collegiate Scouting Association (NCSA), which helps student athletes in ALL sports. The NCSA also works closely with the NCAA. “I’m used to working with college basketball players and making sure they get their grades and do the right things, make the
The effervescent Johnson, the first from his family to graduate from college, knows the importance of getting an education. As a Tennessee graduate in 2010, he received his master’s degree in Sports Administration. Johnson brings a lot to the table for families and their kids. “College nowadays is like a high school degree – you really have to have it,” said Johnson. He says if kids work hard to get it done in the classroom, then there’s a college out there for them. “Not everyone can go to Duke or Indiana, and parents have to be realistic about that,” he said, “But there are many other schools ready and willing to help their kids and help shape their futures. They just have to get it done in the classroom in order to have an opportunity to get it done in athletics. Parents just have to be open to all possibilities, and the one thing they need to impress on their kids is they are students first, then athletes. . .STUDENT ATHLETES.” Steve Risley, father of Ross Risley, the senior quarterback at Hamilton Southeastern in 2012 who recently signed to play for Wittenberg College in the fall, has this to say: “The most important thing that NCSA opened our eyes to was the vast opportunities that exist in Division II and Division III sports. While we all want our children to play for Alabama, Notre Dame, or other major Division I programs, that is not always going to happen. Our goal was for Ross to further his education and prepare for life. If he were going to make the effort and commitment at the next level, then he should have the opportunity to play – not just go to our alma mater, put on a uniform, and sit. “We are not sure that Ross would have gotten this opportunity to move forward to the next level without having NCSA as part of our process. I am sure there may 2013

Ross, his mom (Teea), and I are very happy with the success we have seen and the results we achieved.” Risley, a member of Indiana University’s 1981 NCAA championship basketball team and a McDonald’s AllAmerican from Lawrence Central High School, added: “DO NOT THINK YOU CAN BE AS SUCCESSFUL GOING AT IT ALONE UNLESS YOU ARE A RIVALS.
