FARMERS MARKET COMES TO GEIST Writer & Photographer / Pat Carlini

Shoppers gathered March 24 at Detour American Grille, 10158 Brooks School Rd., for the “first for the area” Meet The Farmers event sponsored by FarmersMarket.com. “We are excited to be in the Geist area now,” says Nick Carter who works to bring together farmers and shoppers all across central Indiana. “We hope area residents will enjoy the farm-to-table experience from now on.” Area residents who stopped by had the opportunity to sample everything from Caprini Creamery goat cheese, coffee from Brickhouse, freshly brewed teas, artisan condiments from Batch No. 2, locally grown micro greens and herbs from Greater Good Gardens, Hoosier popcorn, Nin’s honey and all-natural homemade beef jerky from Tyner Pond Farm. There also was locally produced, all natural home cleaning solutions from Creative Wandering and natural deodorants and soy candles from Skin Love. FarmersMarket.com brings local farmers and artisans together with a local market host like “Detour American Grille.” Area consumers browse local fare online, order and pick up at the Geist restaurant every week. “From time to time, we hold events like this one, so that customers do get the opportunity to meet their farmers and interact,” says Nick. “But week in and week out, pre-ordered items and drop/ pickups are more convenient for both the customer and for the farmers. It’s actually quite difficult for farmers to commit to attending markets all over town, and if customers can’t visit the market, they miss out. This way, it’s a win win for all!” The pilot markets are already live and accepting orders in Fishers and Zionsville with more popping up in Carmel, Broad Ripple, Plainfield, Greenwood, Westfield and Kokomo. To learn more about FarmersMarket.com, visit their website. Pick up at Detour American Grille is every Thursday from 1-8 p.m. Pat Carlini is an experienced television/radio personality associated with NBC in Indianapolis and the syndicated Bob & Tom Show. Autumn Letendre, wife of fallen Marine Captain Brian S. Letendre, is fulfilling her promise to carry out her late husband's legacy through the Golden Star USA Foundation. Their inaugural CamoRun is being held on May 21 at Ft. Benjamin Harrison State Park. 12 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / MAY 2016 / atFishers.com

Coverage Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger . Photographer / Keeley Miller

Semper Fidelis – Always Faithful. That’s Autumn Letendre, wife of fallen Marine Captain Brian S. Letendre. Captain Letendre died May 3, 2006, in combat operations in Al Anbar, Iraq, during Operation Iraqi Freedom. In the 10 years since Captain Letendre’s death, his widow Autumn has faithfully and tirelessly worked to fulfill her promise to carry out his legacy. Following Captain Letendre’s death, Autumn made a choice to rise from the fog of grief and create a legacy that her husband would be proud of. That’s when she created The Golden Star USA Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the needs of America’s active duty, reserved and honorably discharged military and their dependents. To mark the 10th anniversary of her husband’s death and start of the foundation, Golden Star USA is holding the inaugural CamoRun, a 5K and 10K race, May 21 at Ft. Benjamin Harrison. Appropriately falling on Armed Services Day, the event promises to be a day of honoring Captain Letendre and all others who serve, a time for family, friends and support.

The 10-year anniversary celebration has been in the works for a long time, Autumn says. “The 10-year mark has always been the GO point for me to make a celebration like this happen. Our mission with the celebration is to show the corporate world how to get involved and support The Golden Star.”

thanked the man for the generous offer, then he said he couldn’t accept the offer because he would soon be joining the Marines. I was shocked. He’d never told me before that he wanted to do this. Suddenly he’s talking about enlisting and asking if I could handle life as a military wife.”

Autumn says the idea of a run appealed to her because she and Captain Letendre were avid runners. She recalls, “Brian was a fast runner. His trainees loved trying to beat him, and it put a smile on his face.”

Autumn admits she didn’t immediately warm to the idea of frequently moving and the constant worry for his safety. But she says despite her doubts, there was one thing that she couldn’t deny. “I always felt immense pride when I watched him walk in a room. I was proud of who he was and decided I would be proud to call him my husband.”

The journey has been a long one for Autumn. With emotions still raw, she recalls how she and Brian met in college playing soccer at Milligan University in Tennessee and instantly connected. They dated for a while, and then she says one day her world changed when Brian received a phone call that she overheard. With a degree in Computer Science, Brian received handsome job offers. This call was no exception. The handsome salary offer from the large corporation was no surprise to Autumn. Instead, it was Brian who delivered the shocking response. “He atFishers.com / MAY 2016 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 13

The couple married, and Autumn was quickly thrust into a whole new world. After settling in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Brian prepared for training, but Autumn wasn’t prepared for the discussion they would soon have. Ever the realist, Brian sat her down and told her what to do should he be killed in action. “He was very thorough, explaining to me what to do and who to call. I couldn’t even fathom it at the time,” she says. Just two weeks after they were married, Brian was called for his first tour of duty in Iraq.

"You heal when you help others."

Autumn smiles as she remembers that despite her fiercely independent and capable persona, Captain Letendre took his job of taking care of his wife very seriously. “One evening, I heard a knock at the door. It was one of Brian’s friends, a military officer. He told me he was here on orders from Captain Letendre to take her to dinner. It was his way of making sure I was taken care of,” she says.

All while raising Dillon, she continues managing the foundation, Abby Adams Boutique, keeping up with speaking engagements and more. Inspired by the many veterans she’s met and helped through their journeys, she’s working on her master’s degree in rehabilitative counseling. She’s also preparing to open her next boutique in Fishers. She’s excited to reveal the name and specific details soon and says it will encompass food and fun in an old-fashioned family environment.

As the event’s success weighs heavy on her mind, I ask her what Brian would say to her on that day. Emotions well up again, and she tells me, “Brian always left me sticky notes everywhere with words of encouragement. He’d probably leave me a sticky note telling me to make someone smile today.

Autumn remains steadfast in her commitment to help others first. To that end, she is adamant that all the proceeds from the foundation, the boutique, the run and the speaking engagements go directly to benefit the military families. She pays her staff, but she does not draw a paycheck. “Dillon and I have all we need,” she says. Now it’s full speed ahead with final preparations for the Camo Run. Opening ceremonies begin at 9:15 a.m. with the race kicking off at 10:45. Military Jump Master and founder of the All Veteran Group, Mike Elliott, who famously accompanied Former President George H.W. Bush on his 90th birthday buddy jump, will jump during the ceremony. Tickets to buddy jump with Elliott will be available for purchase at the event. Famous artist Randall Hedden will be on hand to create one of his signature magnificent paintings to be auctioned at the event. Golden Star is also holding a VIP fundraising luncheon as part of the event. Tickets for the luncheon can be purchased for $100 each. Seating for the luncheon is limited to 100 guests. You can register to run at tuxbro.com. You can also find the link to register on The Golden Star USA Facebook and Twitter pages. #GETINVOLVED Pippa Mann is used to attracting attention for her athleticism rather than for the color of her clothing or race equipment. That all changed back in 2014 when she formed her partnership with Susan G. Komen. Mann was inspired initially to change her decadelong red and yellow helmet to pink with the intent of donating it as a fundraiser for the Komen Central Indiana auction.

Mann says, “This program is not an easy one to put together each year, but it’s an incredibly rewarding program to put But realizing the Indianapolis 500 was, in together and be a part of, and I could Mann’s words, “a massive national sporting not do any of this without the incredible event,” she and her team owner, Dale support from my team Dale Coyle Racing. I never wanted to stand out and the race car became pink. in that way,” she said. However, she noticed that fans would wait outside her garage to For a team owner to basically gift the entire share their personal stories with her.

“I started to learn so much more about this color that I always eschewed,” Mann said. In the first year of the partnership, she was worried whether her fans would understand that this was not a “sponsorship,” that they were not taking money from a charity to run a race car. But much to Mann’s surprise, the reaction was overwhelmingly positive. “We have so many survivors, co-survivors and those that have lost loved ones reaching out to me each year. It’s been an incredible experience.” As the program has evolved, the “Get Involved” campaign was created last May when fans did not connect with her original online campaign, “Race with Pippa.” Mann explains that the “Get Involved campaign connects fans through an Indiegogo crowd funding platform which allows them to purchase specific items in support of the racing program.” Mann notes that this allows funds to be raised to donate to Komen.

Writer / Lynda Thies . Photographer / Polina Osherov

The most impactful part of the program was giving people the opportunity to place the names of loved ones in the cockpit of the racing car with Mann. “Climbing in on race day last year surrounded by all of those special people was a pretty incredible experience for me personally, and both of those items are things we want to bring back for 2016.” With these two campaigns combined, they

have raised over $100,000 with the Get Involved Campaign generating $61,000. The goal for 2016 is to raise $100,000 which Mann feels nervous about but excited, and at the same time, she feels confident they can accomplish this goal because they have more people supporting the partnership than ever before.

We still wanted to find a way to harness this support and get these companies involved in the racing program.” Ideas were brainstormed, and the Pink Car Collective concept was developed.

“We spoke to many people who wanted to get involved in helping keep the pink Susan

The concept was to offer sponsorship opportunities that would allow companies to become part of the racing program and support this pink car on the track while selecting what other opportunities are important to them. This might be VIP invites to the team dinner, suite tickets for the day or even entertaining clients on Carb Day.

This unique partnership will offer other business-to-business opportunities for companies to connect with the other sponsors in the program. Mann works tirelessly to ensure the success of her partnership with Susan G. Komen year round and not just during the month of May.

Schools fill their heads with knowledge. Help us fill their tummies with food. One in four Hoosier children doesn’t have enough to eat – nearly 90,000 kids in Greater Indianapolis* alone. Gleaners Food Bank is trying to change that with our BackSacks Weekend Food for Kids program. But distributing a school year’s worth of weekend BackSacks in our entire service area comes with a cost of more than $2 million. Fundraising events like Wine Women & Shoes and its sponsors help pay for this program. Yet, they’re not enough. A gift of just $20 from you provides a child with a month’s worth of weekend BackSacks. And a $100 gift provides him or her with an entire semester’s worth. Please help us fund this worthy program by making a donation today at gleaners.org

“Courtney is a wonderful mom to four sweet children of her own. However, I am nominating her because of her role as second mom to many kids. Many of Courtney’s friends (including myself) have children who have been the beneficiary of Courtney’s love. Although she has a full house, she often invites our children to join for trips to Sky Zone, tumbling, craft days, science experiments and more. From days of fun to math and science tutoring, 'Ms. Courtney' is mom to an extended group of young neighbors, school and cheer friends, rugby friends and wrestling buddies. She has created a strong sense of community by bringing families together who may have not otherwise met. I admire her spirit and her love of encouraging children to laugh and grow!”

Courtney and her husband, Chris Lawhead, live in Gray Eagle and stay very busy with their four children. Their eldest, Keegan, is a ninth grader at HSE. He enjoys wrestling, rugby and Boy Scouts. Their second child, Sydney, a sixth grader at FCI, just made the cheerleading team for next year at Fall Creek Junior High and is involved with Indiana Elite Cheer Team and Indy Premier Soccer. Third in line is Evan, a third grader at Fall Creek Elementary (FCE). He enjoys basketball, wrestling, baseball and Scouts. Their youngest, Spencer, is in kindergarten at FCE. He enjoys soccer, wrestling, basketball and baseball. “We’re so blessed to live in this neighborhood. There’s always kids here shooting baskets with bikes everywhere,” says Courtney who says that she feels uncomfortable talking about herself or being viewed in the spotlight. Besides volunteering in the classroom, for the PTO and sports teams, she holds an open-door policy with kids who migrate to her home as the central hangout spot. From playing on the swing set to creating a craft, kids inevitably sense that Ms. Courtney is a loving role model who enjoys seeing her children and their friends have fun while bringing families together. “Within months of becoming neighbors, Courtney wrapped her loving arms around us all and made each of us – but especially my kids – feel like they were her own,” says Breana J. Daniels, friend and neighbor. “My two children have spent countless nights in her home and traveled on day trips and vacations with the Lawhead family….I don’t know a single person whose life isn’t better because of one of her acts of kindness. The best part of all this is that she doesn’t do it because we need her to. She does it because she genuinely loves them. She just loves.” Courtney believes that the more kids there are, the more games you can play. Whether she supervises flashlight tag, basketball,

parachute games or water balloon fights, she is proud knowing that kids are entertained. Many view her as a second mom. For example, her daughter Sydney has formed a special bond with a carpooling buddy named Maddie Boyd (the daughter of Michelle Boyd who nominated Courtney). Sydney and Maddie instantly connected in cheerleading. Although they attend different schools and live in different neighborhoods, they’re like sisters because they hang out together so much. Since Sydney is surrounded by three brothers, Courtney admits she’s sort of adopted Maddie into her family for more girl power. Courtney can relate to feeling outnumbered by boys since she grew up with four brothers and one sister. She lives by the phrase, “What’s one more?” as she invites her children’s friends to go with them on nature walks, to baseball games, Conner Prairie and the zoo. “When we were brand new to the neighborhood, Courtney made us feel very welcome right away,” says Kelly Anderson, friend and neighbor. “She invited our family over to her house for cookie and ornament exchange. My son, Jake, and Courtney’s son, Evan, quickly became best friends. She treated Jake like her own son with loving care and kindness. She took him to the YMCA to swim with her kids and to My Gym to play when it was cold and snowy….She helped me big time when my twins were born four years ago. She watched my two older kids, so I could go be with the twins in the NICU.” Her main philosophy is to let children have joy and live in the moment, get dirty and have fun. “If the kids want to play the Pie Face game or create art projects, I would rather see them have fun for that one instant than to worry about the mess it will make….It’s not an inconvenience to live in the moment because of the benefit in the long run.”

She attributes much of her values and beliefs from her own mother who had six kids in nine years. Growing up in Fort Wayne, she remembers there were always kids at her home, and her mom always had homemade cookies for everyone. “Mom always made room for somebody which is second nature to me.” Courtney’s past experience as a nanny has also helped shape her into the mother she is today. She used to nanny every summer for about six years at Lake Wawassee for various families. She can’t believe she used to get paid for having fun rollerblading, swimming, turtle hunting and so much more. Courtney refuses to take all the credit for having such awesome kids. She brags about her husband as part of their team efforts. “He’s an amazing dad. He always finds time to talk with our kids, coach them and teach them life lessons….He makes games out of everything. He is so creative and fun.” Janet C. Striebel is a Fishers resident and freelance writer. She and her husband, Doug, have three children: Ryan, Jessica and Justin. She has been writing for the TownePost Network for more than seven years and claims that the best part is meeting all the interesting people in her community.

FALL CREEK VETERINARY MEDICAL CENTER

Photographer / Keeley Miller

New location!

While doing an examination of a sick puppy on top of a grooming table inside the laundry room of his veterinary hospital, Dr. Jerry Risser knew that it was time to make his dream a reality. Strapped for space at the facility he opened as Fall Creek Veterinary Medical Center in 2007, it was time to build a new, freestanding hospital. “When you are busy working every day, sometimes you can’t see just how much things have grown,” he said. With the addition of Dr. Aaron Luth full-time in 2014 and Dr. Wendy Moore part-time this year, the 1,978 square foot space at 96th and Olio Road was struggling to squeeze in patients and a growing staff. When land became available just 100 yards behind the current site, the decision was made. FCVMC’s new facility, topping out at nearly 8,000 square feet, opened recently. The new building, that looks like a lake cottage from the outside, has five exam rooms, a consultation room, separate canine and feline waiting areas, triple the number of indoor runs and cages for patients and a luxury “cat condo” room for feline boarding. Grooming capacity has doubled, including a stand-up shower for large dogs. “Bringing your pet to the veterinarian’s office is usually a family affair. We wanted an environment where pets and people alike can

Dr. Jerry Risser

feel comfortable, welcomed and relaxed,” Dr. Risser said. To that end, the lobby greets all who enter with warm, cheerful colors, a refreshment bar and a cozy fireplace. There are interactive video games for children in a well-supervised area of the lobby. The exam rooms and other patient areas utilize materials and techniques that are part of the “Fear Free Practice” model. “It’s easier to get a good picture of what’s going in with patients that are more relaxed and less fearful of their time at the veterinarian’s office,” Dr. Risser said. Everything from table covers and “vertical spaces” for cats to paint colors on the walls and details like a scale recessed into the floor to make it easier to weigh dogs were included. One thing that has remained is the focus on warm professionalism – the sense of a family doctor for all stages of a pet’s life. Dr. Risser says, “We don’t want to lose the personal touch. While very large practices have certain benefits, we really treasure the relationship we have with our patients and clients. We seek to transfer a small practice into bigger space that lets us be more efficient while still feeling like we can offer personal attention.” The facility was designed to exceed the requirements for accreditation with the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) that will visit in June. An Open House for the community will come sometime before that, but the doctors and staff look forward to anyone curious to stop by and visit any time.

Writer & Photographer / Keeley Miller HSE athlete Abby Taylor is far from ordinary. Despite only being a freshman, she has already made the Varsity Girls Swim Team and the Varsity Softball Team while juggling her first year of high school and being a class officer. Taylor began playing numerous sports at a young age but decided to pursue swimming and softball in high school. “The people that I have swam with and played softball with really helped me to make my decision to stay in those sports. They are all amazing, and we are really close,” said Taylor. “All the girls are so great, and the seniors are role models to me.” Along with already making a big impression in athletics, Taylor also

holds a 3.9 grade point average and is the director of community service for the freshman class. “[Managing sports and school] is difficult, but I think being an athlete teaches me time management as well as life skills,” said Taylor. Taylor recently completed her first season on the swim team and is in the middle of her softball season. Already, she is looking forward to her next three years at HSE. “I just want to get better overall, learn and enjoy the new experiences.” The HSE Mascot Monthly Scholarship Athlete of the Month is sponsored by Chef Suzanne who will deliver a catered meal and plaque to the Taylor family during the month of May. Their driver for the Indy 500 last year was Bryan Clauson of Noblesville who is doing something completely crazy. In fact, the name of his racing quest this year is “The Chasing 200 Tour: Circular Insanity.” Clauson, who is driving for Jonathan Byrd’s Racing again this season, is scheduled to drive in 200 races in 2016. “It is ambitious, but it’s a dream of Bryan’s,” states David. “And he is literally on the track more than off and is doing quite well.” The Indy 500 should mark Clauson’s 65th race in his quest. Both drivers for Jonathan Byrd Racing are from Noblesville: Clauson and Conor Daly. Daly is the son of Derek Daly and Noblesville native Beth Blackburn. Jonathan Byrd Racing’s partner is the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, which is one of the top most-trusted brands in the country. The Byrd racing team is the only race team in the country to be partnered with one of the top five most trusted brands. For two weeks in May, the entertaining and networking for Jonathan Byrd’s customers and clients will be taking place alongside the straightaway at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. While the event is only two weeks long, the impact and connections made between Byrd guests may contribute to building a lasting legacy, much like what they have created for themselves. With their restaurants, weddings division, two conference centers and other catering locations, plus the presence at Camp Atterbury and Grand Park, Jonathan Byrd’s will serve over three million meals in 2016. The company projects that they will serve over four million meals in 2017. “We have to be one of the fastest-growing companies in Indiana, certainly one of the fastest growing food service companies,” shares David. Making connections and creating value with business relationships like those between Grand Park and Jonathan Byrd Hospitality and Restaurant Group represents what’s possible through a simple catering contract. “The initial conversations with Westfield TownePost.com / MAY 2016 / TOWNEPOST NETWORK

about a simple catering job for a ribboncutting ceremony is what has led to all that we are now doing at Grand Park,” says Kevin Manship, COO of Jonathan Byrd Hospitality and Restaurant Group. “You just never know.” The Jonathan Byrd Racing platform provides a business development tool for them. This provides Jonathan Byrd’s a

serious advantage over other companies in the same space. They are able to increase their brand profile in a way where they are more visible and linked to the Indy 500. This advertising platform is a win-win for companies wishing to make strategic relationships with other companies. “We have the ability to entertain clients at the IMS during the 500 and at other events

across the country,” says David. “We go about our racing sponsorships in a different way. We say, ‘Hey, we are going racing. We are investing in our brand. We’d like for you to do business with us and come along for the ride.’” For more information on Jonathan Byrd Racing, visit their Facebook page, follow them on Twitter and watch them race!

Jonathan Byrd’s Racing has successfully fielded 17 entries in the Indianapolis 500 beginning in 1985, scoring six top 10 finishes with a best finish of 5th in 2005.

In a world of change, our focus is steadfast.

The roster of Jonathan Byrd’s Racing Indy 500 drivers includes: Rich Vogler (‘85, ’86, ’87, ’88, ’89) Stan Fox (‘91, ’92) Gordon Johncock (‘91) Buddy Lazier (‘91, ’05) Scott Brayton (‘93) John Andretti (‘94) Davy Jones (‘95) Arie Luyendyk (‘96) Mike Groff (‘97, ’98) Jaques Lazier (‘01). LEMONADE DAY KICK-OFF

Writer / Kara Reibel Photographer / Stephanie Duncan

“What is one thing that kids can do to earn money?” asked Ollie Dunn, the daughter of comedian and financial planner Peter Dunn (aka Pete the Planner) to begin the Family Feud game between “The Lemony Crickets” and “The Pucker Doodles.” Gerry Dick, creator and host of Inside INdiana Business with Gerry Dick, was quick to hit his button with the reply, “Sell lemonade!” This was the top answer on the game board, and his team, The Lemony Crickets, team were quick to dominate the game. Gerry’s fellow team members included Mandy Selke, cofounder of Just Pop In; Leslie Bailey, The Adventuress for the Indy Star; and Mike Kelly, managing partner of DeveloperTown, who also hosted the event. The Lemony Crickets dominated the Family Feud game over rival team, The Pucker Doodles, who included team

members Nicole Misencik, Meteorologist for WTHR; Carly Swift, cofounder of Just Pop In; Matt MacBeth, cofounder of pi lab; and Clay Robinson, cofounder and owner of Sun King Brewery. “Game Show Night is always great fun with some really cool people, and best of all, it helps support young entrepreneurs,” says Gerry of the Lemonade Day Kick-Off Party. “In 1973, Secretariat won the Belmont Stakes by 31 lengths to win the Triple Crown…which is a comparatively small margin when measured against the beating we took,” says Pucker Doodle teammate MacBeth. “It’s all in good fun for Lemonade Day.” Presenting sponsors of the event included Eleven Fifty Academy and J.D. Byrider. Officially, Lemonade Day is May 21 with registration now open online. “To get the most out of the experience, we encourage kids to register early,” shares Jami Marsh, Director of Lemonade Day TownePost.com / MAY 2016 / TOWNEPOST NETWORK

Greater Indy. “This allows our young entrepreneurs to get the most out of the digital curriculum available online.” “There is a role for everyone to play on Lemonade Day, whether you have kids participating or not, we want people out buying lemonade,” adds Marsh. “We’re excited for the chance to be involved in Lemonade Day,” shares Kelly. “Lemonade Day lights the entrepreneurial spark in students, teaches them what it takes to launch and grow a small business and illustrates how important it is to differentiate a product. That’s 100 percent congruent with what we do with our clients at DeveloperTown.” Lemonade Day is empowering today’s youth to become tomorrow’s entrepreneurs. The idea for Lemonade Day originated with Richmond, Indiana, native Michael Holthouse who now lives in Houston. Holthouse approached Scott Jones in 2010, and Jones then licensed the idea for

Greater Indianapolis in 2010. Since 2010, Lemonade Day has grown in popularity, inspiring young entrepreneurs across the state. Community Champions are selected to mentor the efforts of those participating and encourage young entrepreneurs in their lemonade endeavors. There are many kids who do this year after year as a tradition and host their own lemonade stand frequently throughout the warm weather months, regardless of prizes. “This is what we want – kids to start with a lemonade stand, and who knows what that may lead to? Many

successful entrepreneurs talk about having lemonade stands when they were kids,” shares Marsh. “Participating in Lemonade Day with fellow Indianapolis ambassadors is truly a highlight of the year!” states Mandy Selke. “Even if entrepreneurship is not a child’s path, the education, experience and engagement inspires for a more enriched childhood!” This year, the Community Champions are John Wechsler, serial entrepreneur and founder of the co-working space Launch

Scott Bradford COMMITTED TO TRI

Writer / Kara Reibel . Photographer / Amy Unger

In January of this year, when most of us are contemplating unrealistic goals we set for ourselves during the New Year’s resolution wave, Scott Bradford made the conscious decision to become a triathlete. “It is more about creating positive change and good habits in my life,” says Bradford. “I am 44 years old and feel I am ready for a challenge.” Bradford confesses to fits and spurts with his fitness history. Although last year with the encouragement from his younger brother Mark, they completed a couple long distance cycling runs, one for 50 miles and another for 100 miles. “I have never considered myself an athlete,” says Bradford. He played soccer and baseball through school and was a good teammate. Bradford took up cycling a few years ago and enjoys it enough that he thought it would be cool to complete a triathlon. “There was no other reason other than that,” confesses Bradford. Bradford’s younger brother Mark in Kokomo invited him over for a cookout and told Scott to bring his running shoes. “He made me

run a mile with him before dinner,” says Bradford. “I hadn’t run a mile since high school. I surprised myself and finished the mile.” One of the first things Bradford did after making the commitment to complete a triathlon was surround himself with encouraging people. This was easily done. His brother, his girlfriend and his trainer all support his efforts. The commitment to the training it takes to do three sports requires an organized routine and discipline. Mark, who is a runner, has committed to a triathlon with Scott, so they signed up for their first triathlon April 24. “It’s great that Scott has the brother thing which is great to have that fun competitiveness between them,” says Ty Terrell, Bradford’s trainer at iFAST. “But it’s his diligence and work ethic that has the biggest impact on his training. It’s a credit to him.” Bradford’s training is made of the essential pieces needed for long distance athletes. Strength is a key component. “The stronger you are, the more you can handle,” states Terrell. “Athletes need to power through running or cycling up a hill. A trained body can calm a lactic acid system and push through.” Bradford thanks iFAST in Fishers for helping his achieve his goal. Terrell changes up Bradford’s workouts every four weeks to keep pushing to him to new levels.

42 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / MAY 2016 / atFishers.com

“I feel so much stronger today than I have in my entire life,” shares Bradford. “And I see results in my training when I am not in the gym.” Bradford used to run a 12-minute mile, and now he is down to a low 9-minute mile. His time spent in the pool has improved with his endurance levels increasing, and his average cycling speed is at least a mile and a half faster. “There are reasons why trainers come to us from all over the country to learn what we do here,” says Terrell. “We listen to feedback from clients. They see results.” “People have great intentions when they sign up, but Scott walks the walk,” shares Terrell. “We all experience peaks throughout training. You can’t be climbing constantly. You peak and level, and you have an off season. Then back to prep and performance, and we do it again. Like a pro athlete.” Triathlete in four months? Done.

GIFT A HOUSE HELPS YOUNG COUPLES WITH FIRST HOME Writer / Keeley Miller

Young home buyers and couples are starting to forgo the traditional wedding registries of the past. Instead of asking for blenders, toasters and linen, engaged couples are beginning to ask for help with something much more permanent – unlocking the door to their first home. Fishers local and realtor Yasha Holmes launched Gift a House, an online registry that helps couples get their dream home. Gift a House provides the tools for members to set up a cost-free, personalized down payment registry to share with others. Friends and family will be able to donate money towards a couple’s down payment directly on a private, PayPal-protected account, helping them reach their new home. Holmes developed the concept in the early ’90s after her own experience with down payment obstacles and student loans after she was married. “I came across an article in the monthly

Realtor magazine that announced that FHA would allow gift funds as down payments. This was great news! My parents decided to help us and to ‘gift’ us money, so that we could go ahead and purchase our first home. We had been to a couple other banks with no luck, and now we had a greater chance to go ahead and purchase our first home, which happily we did. “If we had known before our actual wedding, we would have encouraged family and friends to be a part of our future rather than give gifts of towels, dishes and other traditional registry items,” said Holmes. “Shortly after, I decided to start Dream Home Registry. After a 15-year detour as an advertising executive with Gannett, I decided to return to a real estate career with Carpenter Realtors and launch Gift A House. The Internet and social media will allow anyone who wants to purchase a home to utilize Gift A House and help pave a way to home ownership.” atFishers.com / MAY 2016 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 45

Not only does Gift a House provide an account at no cost, but the site also offers rebates, rewards and real estate services. Local real estate and event vendors offer extra discounts to members, from wedding dresses to photographers. Carpenter Realtors Real Estate Services also combines their own expertise and professional representation with Gift a House, providing referral and relocation assistance along with a rebate at commission for any member who uses their services. For Holmes, her own experience in real estate and her passion for helping other couples to their dream home is a perfect match. She is able to provide clients with a cost-free, effective way to a down payment as well as her own expertise in the field. “[My hopes for all my clients are] happiness, prosperity, good health and to remember me when they have real estate needs in the future,” said Holmes.
