The Wellington Banquet and Conference center in Fishers has new ownership energized by the possibilities of their facility. Located just north of 96th Street and close to I-69, owner Cami O’Herren is capitalizing on their talented staff and amenities to provide superb service and accommodations for events. Having taken over the facility earlier this year, O’Herren says, "It’s all about bringing business to this area.” And with several hotels in close proximity, O’Herren is happy to work with the neighbors stating, "We all fill a slightly different niche, and working together benefits us all.” According to O’Herren’s husband, Greg, owner of Shamrock Builders, “It’s the flexibility of the space that makes it so appealing." The Wellington is capable of hosting events up to 500 guests. Wedding receptions, business seminars, board meetings and other events are welcome. Replete with all the technology for business or banquet events, including a dance floor, The Wellington has it all. In addition to the amenities, a great location and flexible space, The Wellington offers something many consider the icing on the cake a commercial kitchen and a full time chef. “We can create anything from box lunches to gourmet meals with beef tenderloin and salmon,” says Cami, “We have added individual beef wellington appetizers with a special Wellington sauce.” With an extensive menu for onsite catering plus the ability to cook, staff, and serve off site, The Wellington offers endless possibilities. “We would like the Wellington to be considered as a wonderful facility with excellent food and great service,” says O’Herren, “Our goal is a wonderful experience for every client.” With the growth in Fishers and surrounding areas, The Wellington is an ideal venue for office and social events. atFishers.com / OCTOBER 2015 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 7

indicating that they want to leave the conversation or would rather be at the food table/bar.
TO BUILD TRUST
A good handshake should be three things: vertical, dry and firm but not too firm. Handshakes create oxytocin, the cuddle hormone, and help people to feel more connected during the interaction. A good handshake can create as much of a bond as three hours of face-to-face interaction between two people. It can also be an attempt to show dominance if someone pulls the double-handed handshake that covers or flips your hand so your wrist is facing up and vulnerable.
Keep hands visible and expressive. Hands are the first thing people look at, whether they realize it or not. Hidden hands (even one hand in a pocket) subconsciously triggers people to feel that you’re hiding something or could be a threat.
TO SHOW RESPECT
Fronting: standing facing someone head-on is a non verbal sign of respect and engagement. Next time you’re at a networking event, look at people who are in conversation and see how many of them are fronting and how many of them have their feet pointing in a different direction,

EYE CONTACT
There’s a myth that constant or intense eye contact is better in business situations,
but that’s not the case. There’s a spectrum. Ideal is between 60-70 percent eye contact and will produce oxytocin, or the cuddle hormone, and help build trust. Anything under 60 percent is cold or detached, and anything over 70 percent can seem creepy or invasive.

When they decided to have a family, Carey chose to stay home and raise their two boys Grant and Blane. To bring in extra money, and for the challenge, Carey started a part-time business with a line of credit of $10,000 as an Invisible Fence distributor in her spare time. Carey would schedule evening appointments for Brad during the week, and together they would install on the weekends. They remember installing a fence after dark using the headlights from their car. The business grew to a point where they were one of the most successful Invisible Fence dealers in the U.S., overseeing 14 states. One day, Brad came home, and instead of Carey stressed out from balancing kids, household logistics and the new business, she was smiling and happy. She announced she had just “quit” the business because she couldn’t take it. Brad knew it was time to quit Lilly and jump in full-time. This started a long and successful career as business owners. All in all, they have started and owned four businesses and sold two. The one people are most familiar with is Recreation Unlimited in Noblesville.
RECREATION UNLIMITED
Established in 1989, they are a one-stop shop for spa, hot tub, pool table, game room, playground and sports equipment needs. Their staff combines over 50 years of recreation experience in the Midwest. They have a huge display of quality Play Systems, Goalrilla Basketball Systems and playhouses. Their private spa showroom allows you the opportunity to get in and enjoy the relaxing comfort of several spas before making a purchase. They take pride in their equipment and installations, and their number one goal is to provide the best service both before and after your purchase. They founded Goalrilla Basketball Systems in 1995, eventually selling the company in 2000. Recreation Unlimited, however, still sells the
brand as does DICK’s Sporting Goods and many other retailers across the country. Roger, their lead installer at Recreation Unlimited, has installed more basketball goals than anyone in the U.S. Brad has the big picture, sales and marketing mind, while Carey provides the finance, operations and day-to-day expertise. They are a perfect partnership and provide balance to one another and the business. Brad credits much of their business success from staying fresh, constantly reinventing the business and offering a diversified offering of products and solutions.
RELATIONSHIPS AND FAMILY
Family is very important to them as they are very proud of their two sons Grant and Blane. Blane is a third-year medical student at Marian University, and Grant has joined the family business with his IT background. They spoke about the importance of relationships, community involvement and their desire to impact people through their businesses. This includes employees, customers, vendors and people in the community.
PHILANTHROPIC PASSIONS
It was very clear that the next chapter of their lives includes making a difference in the community. They have recently donated land for the new Humane Society for Hamilton County. They spoke very highly of the Executive Director Rebecca M. Stevens. They shared the vision for the new complex that will be located just north of 146th St. on State Road 37 and are incredibly excited for the future project. You might have heard there’s a new farm in town…but let’s be honest, you’ve not been keeping up on the local farm Sure, you’ll pay a buck or two more for a Starbucks or a scene. However, our Greenfield neighbors have one very craft beer. Why? Because it tastes better. But why do we awesome farm that is now available right at your doorstep. scoff at paying more for our meat and produce? Chris shares, "Too many people think you’re an elitist when I get it. You’re thinking, "I don’t want a farm at my you spend more on better quality food for your family or doorstep." Perhaps not, but do you want local, pastureyourself. That couldn’t be further from the truth." raised, drug-free, delicious meats delivered for free? Yes please! In addition to Chris’ farm to table restaurant, The Mug in Greenfield (if you haven’t been, go!), Tyner Pond Farm Meet the owner of Tyner Pond Farm, Chris Baggott. has launched a food delivery service bringing affordable, Chris comes from a software entrepreneurial background drug-free, non-GMO, pasture-raised pigs and chickens and has now dedicated his time and efforts to farming. and grass-fed cattle to your door. You might wonder why Tyner Pond’s food tastes so much better. Chris believes, "The big aspect here is we want them [the animals] to be able to express their natural behavior. What makes a pig happy vs. makes a pig stressed? Pigs are happy when they can be piggish. They are happy when they have a variety to eat, they can roam around and have lots of sunshine. We don’t want to do anything that makes the pig unhappy. Animals living in their natural environments don’t need antibiotics pumped into them because they are far less likely to get sick. If you appreciate quality and you want something that tastes better, treat it better." The completely amazing part is that if you don’t believe their claims, you can check it out for yourself! The farm is 100 percent open to guests. Head on out to Greenfield, walk the farm and meet the livestock, and while you’re there, you can check out the farm store.
Better yet, stay for the weekend. Have you ever wanted to check out a farm lifestyle? Extend your stay. Tyner Pond Farm now offers you and your family the amazing opportunity of experiencing life on the farm firsthand. You can rent their newly constructed, four bedroom, three full bath farmhouse for the weekend. The farmhouse boasts a state-of-the-art kitchen equipped with family style dining sure to welcome great conversation and lots of memories. During your stay, start your day with a farm fresh breakfast followed by a stroll through the farm’s rolling fields while the animals start their day with you.
The kids and adults get to run around the farm collecting the chickens to give to the farmers for processing. The event runs for about 45 minutes and is sure to be a great time. Don’t forget Thanksgiving! All year long, you can purchase gift certificates to the online or farm store, or get your holiday ham or turkey while also giving the gift of clean eating and supporting our local farmers! Check out tynerpondfarm.com to start ordering from their online farm store or to read more about the farm and renting the farmhouse.
With the fall and holidays right around the corner, Tyner Pond has some familyfriendly events coming up that you should check out. Running now through October, get ready for the Chicken Round Ups.
A few of Mary Ryan's favorite things to do include spending time with her family, volunteering and exploring around town.

URBAN FARMING WITH BACKYARD CHICKENS Writer / Janet C. Striebel
As you’ve seen in the grocery store, there are many labels appearing on eggs these days, such as cage-free, free-range and humanelyraised. These alternative methods have come about ever since people started becoming aware of the treatment of egg-laying hens, like how they’re confined to battery cages without room to spread their wings. According to humanesociety.org, on average, each egg-laying hen is confined to only 67 square inches of cage space, less than the size of a letterhead piece of paper, in which she’s expected to live her whole life. Sadly, caged hens are among the most confined animals in agribusiness and are also denied their most natural behaviors such as perching, nesting and dust bathing. Some people have decided to raise chickens in their own backyards not only to guarantee healthy eggs but also to feel comfort in knowing they’re helping egg-laying hens lead happier lives. “One of the biggest misconceptions is that you need a rooster to help a hen lay eggs,” says Sally Summitt, owner of five backyard chickens in a neighborhood near Speedway. “You only need a rooster if you want baby chicks. A hen will automatically lay eggs for food, and each hen will produce about 200-250 eggs per year.”
test” where eggs are submerged in water. If the egg floats, then it is bad. If it sinks to the bottom, then it is fresh. “My hens don’t make much noise except when they are actually laying an egg,” says Sally. “It reminds me of a kitchen timer as if they’re saying, ‘Dinner’s ready!’” Two of the five hens that Sally owns are Easter Eggers (type of breed) while the other three are Rhode Island Reds and are rescues from a factory. Unfortunately, the three Reds have damaged beaks. She and her daughter, Sophie, take extra care in feeding these three by providing softer foods that don’t require pecking such as corn cut from the cob and scrambled eggs, believe it or not.
Typical hens without injured beaks will eat vegetables, some fruits, layered, crumbled feed and scrambled eggs. Sally says that chickens need some grass for consumption and in order to get the bugs. Also they need some type of grit like oyster shells available all the time to “MANY MAY NOT help with digestion. KNOW THAT THE
EGGS AT THE GROCERY STORE MAY BE UP TO SIX MONTHS OLD. I FELT THAT I COULD DO A LITTLE BIT BY HAVING OUR OWN FRESH EGGS AND TEACHING MY CHILDREN THAT WE CAN FEEL PROUD TO KNOW WE’RE ALLOWING CHICKENS TO FREE RANGE AND LIVE HAPPIER LIVES.”
Sally became interested in raising chickens when she learned about the treatment of chickens and how they can peck themselves to death when living in tight quarters. She is an animal lover as she also grooms dogs in Fishers at Bridgeview Grooming.
“The interesting thing to me about raising chickens for eggs is that this is how people did it forever until about 50 years ago,” says Cindy Baney, owner of 30 chickens who lives on the unincorporated east side of Fishers near Fortville. “Most folks had a family garden, and many of our parents grew up with chickens.” Cindy and her family decided they wanted to get the most out of their nutrition after her husband, Steve Baney, was diagnosed with cancer four years ago. “We chose to begin living a healthier lifestyle. We began looking at our carbon footprints and decided it was time to quit using pesticides, change our ways and become more connected to health,” she says.
Her 16-year-old daughter, Claire, was the motivating force behind their move from a suburban neighborhood to the 3.6 acre farm. Since Claire was active in FFA and 4H, she urged her parents to move so they could have more animals. Now they not only have chickens, but ducks, goats, sheep and a pig. Incidentally, they also have two roosters, so they are raising chicks as well.
“Many may not know that the eggs at the grocery store may be up to “Raising chickens is easy,” says Cindy who provides her six months old," she says. "I felt that I could do a little bit by having chickens with quality feed from Hoosier Heritage Farm our own fresh eggs and teaching my children that we can feel proud (hoosierheritagefarm.com). to know we’re allowing chickens to free range and live happier lives.” Steve built a chicken coop with perches at various levels where the Sally pulls the eggs before 6 p.m., rinses them and lays them on chickens retire for the night.Like clockwork, they seem to know that the counter. She claims that they’re good for 3-6 weeks without it’s bedtime as they waddle into their coop each evening at dusk. refrigeration. As a test for freshness. she recommends the “float The coop is where the hens lay their eggs. atFishers.com / OCTOBER 2015 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 19
“Our chickens have a great life on a green pasture where they free range,” says Cindy. “They pick out leftover crops from our garden like the tomatoes and help fertilize for our next season.”
Shannon. “They are pet-like and follow our son, Luke, around the yard. When he sits upon the swing, the chickens will jump up and sit next to him,” she adds with a laugh.
Cindy and Steve are both teachers in Hamilton County. Cindy is among one of three teachers out of 30 that raise chickens at Carmel Elementary, where she teaches music.
When asked if she thinks it has been worth it to raise chickens so far, she has no doubt.
Another family wanting to raise chickens also lives in the unincorporated Fishers area. “We knew we wanted to raise chickens from the start,” says Shannon Vierling, who owns 12 chickens on four acres near 126th and Cyntheanne. The Vierling family has provided two acres for their chickens to free range. “I wanted our kids to see the cycle of where our food comes from and how we take care of the animals in order to get our food in return,” she says. Shannon and her family have raised their chickens from baby chicks and are now reaping the rewards of healthy eggs. She appreciates how Tractor Supply Co. in Noblesville provides the starter kits for raising chickens (tractorsupply.com).
“The kids get so excited to bring me the eggs from the coop. It means so much more to them than going to Kroger and grabbing a carton from the shelf…Also they benefit from seeing the care we put into the animals and what we get back in return,” she says. If you’re interested in raising chickens, check first with your homeowners association and/or your residential regulations and ordinances for raising livestock. Go to backyardchickens.com for more information. This website is helpful to guide beginners on everything from inquiring your local laws to designing your personalized chicken coop.
“The chickens are more social and interactive than we thought," says

MEMORIAL HONORARY COACH TOM REECE RECOGNIZED AT ANNUAL PINK GAME Writer & Photographer / Keeley Miller
During HSE’s annual Royals for the Cure Pink Game, a selected cancer survivor is chosen to be honored as the year’s honorary coach. This year, the honor was given to the family of Thomas Reece who passed away from cancer in May 2015. Reece was involved in Hamilton Southeastern Football through his two sons and his own participation as the head of the Helmet Crew. A true Royals Dad, Reece raised spirits at every game. After being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in May 2011, Reece faced years of chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. Not letting cancer get in his way, he continued to run a company, travel the world and even complete a Warrior Dash. Reece’s family was presented with a plaque during halftime of the Pink Game September 4. Even his son Kyle joined from Texas through FaceTime. “Most importantly, [this plaque] remembers how hard he fought, and he never let cancer beat him,” said wife Karen. “He actually beat cancer. He lived his life on his terms, and he never let it stop him from doing anything.”

“THREE JEWS WALKED INTO A SHOPPING CENTER...” A MEMOIR BY ELIZABETH KRAFT TAYLOR
Writer & Photographer / Kara Reibel
Elizabeth Kraft Taylor, known to friends as “Eliz” (Liz), is an indelible mix of grit and elegance. “Three Jews Walked Into A Shopping Center…” is Taylor’s new memoir, recounting amazing life stories that only she could share. Featured on the back cover of her memoir is a “want ad” she saw in the Chicago Tribune: “Wanted: Creative Director; wild, undisciplined, sometimes rebellious, raw talent seeks leadership.” She says, “I knew it was written for me.” After working in retail in Chicago, Taylor
was ready for her next challenge. Not surprisingly, she got the job and moved to Indianapolis, starting a career with Melvin Simon & Associates. “I’d met Melvin, Herb, and Fred 12 years prior to accepting the job at Simon when they visited a grand reopening for Madigan’s, the most successful store in any of their malls, which was the store where I was the Marketing Director in Chicago,” recalls Taylor. “These three Jews walked into the store and became my three wise men.” Taylor would work for Simon during the golden age of retail during the ’80s and early ’90s. She would be actively involved TOWNEPOST NETWORK / OCTOBER 2015 / TownePost.com
with the opening of the Mall of America as well as Circle Centre Mall, the Indiana Roof Ballroom, Embassy Suites Hotel, the Indiana Pacers and many other tremendous marketing events that she staged, raising the bar and attracting retailers such as Nordstrom to Indianapolis. Taylor has shared so many of her stories over the years, inevitably eliciting the response from her listeners, “Eliz, you should write a book.” Taylor dedicates the memoir to her three wise men and to Gerald Paul (Paul Harris, where she served on the Board of Directors), Jerry Gershman and to “Jewish men
everywhere who give a shiksa a chance.” Taylor steps further with her prologue, stating the reasons she wrote the book. The first is to honor and remember Melvin Simon because just attending a synagogue to hear his name read aloud once a year was not enough for her. Her second reason was to show the honesty and ethical values that serve as the foundation for the incredible success of the Simon organization. Lastly, she writes to share her personal story of determination and hopes to make the point that “we are all born with handicaps and blessings, and it’s our job in life to figure out which is which.” The delightfully creative copy for the want ad that drew Taylor to Indianapolis was written by then senior copywriter, Teri Moore. “Eliz was, of course, the ideal candidate! She brought structure and just enough organization, but never let that flame of creative freedom burn low,” shares Moore. “It was a madhouse most of the time – creativity, originality, lots of hard work, and above all, the license to thrive in a very loving and supportive environment.” The marketing events were nonstop with the number of malls across the country, and with the special events held at each, there was never a dull moment. Taylor shares one story about an event held at a mall in Idaho where the Lone Ranger was to make a celebrity appearance. “You never knew what was going on,” shares Taylor with a smile and a laugh. “I sent a girl to pick up the Lone Ranger, and he came to his hotel room door naked wearing only the mask.”
Eliz, Vic Ruthig and Jim Austin. Photo provided.
It’s far more than a fun memoir; it’s a living historical account of the rise of the shopping mall and the evolution of retail marketing. It’s funny, insightful and inspiring. Taylor had a tough start with an abusive drug-addicted mother who died prematurely, leaving Taylor with three younger sisters who she worked hard to raise after the death of their mother. “Eliz’s book is a great read for anyone from Indiana, anyone in retail and anyone who comes from less than ideal beginnings,” shares Inside INdiana Business Host Gerry Dick. Taylor is still close to many of her employees and co-workers including Business Development Entrepreneur Jim Austin, who says of Taylor, “Eliz led the industry by leading Simon marketing. She has a brilliant marketing mind and provided me with great guidance throughout our work together which allowed me to hone my own marketing skills early in my career,” shares Austin. “It was a very special time to be a part of the Simon marketing department.”
Taylor praises the Simon brothers for empowering her, and she believes that their religion helped shape the company in very positive ways. “Whenever we opened a new mall which was three or four a year in those days, we would always be involved in that local community in a philanthropic way,” shares Taylor. “And Melvin would say ‘do more.’ I grew up Catholic and were always told to give to the church. The Simon brothers, through their belief of ‘our job is to heal the world,’ gave me a new perspective, and that became an integral part of my life and continues today.” The inner strength and grace that emit from Taylor come from a special place. She found a path enabling her to thrive which is nothing short of a miracle given her upbringing, an important and compelling story by itself. After experiencing a childhood of abuse, Taylor felt there wasn’t anything she couldn’t handle. Her strength of character and perseverance served her well, weathering tough circumstances and

guiding her to becoming a successful Senior Marketing VP at Simon. Later, Taylor continued her career as President and CEO of the 500 Festival.
fact that this gave her a chance to come to terms with her childhood. I believe Eliz to be a superb example to people who’ve dealt with adversity.”
“Eliz Kraft Taylor had a significant impact on my career,” shares National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) Executive Director Mi’Chelle Bettner. “When I worked with her at the 500 Festival, her creative vision was inspiring and a model for me moving forward. Eliz was a mentor to me, and I am blessed to have worked with her.”
“I have been blessed in so many ways and feel that I am called to devote my time to people in need,” shares Taylor. “I realized that there are people out there that are too shy to ask for help. People just need to love each other.”
Today Taylor is dedicated to serving not just the community but friends who may be dealing with their own challenges. “I am very happy that she got the opportunity to write this book,” shares Eliz’s husband Stephen Taylor of Stephen Taylor Design Residential Interiors. “Expressing her appreciation to Melvin and Herb was a cathartic experience and the
were wonderful, kind people.” If gold is to be purified, it has to pass through fire. That’s what Eliz is – gold.
Whether it’s a phone call or a note of encouragement, Taylor is dedicated to spreading compassion and love. “I am happy to share my stories,” says Taylor. “It was a great release for me and a cathartic healing experience.” “My first goal with my memoir is to bring back conversation about Melvin Simon,” states Taylor. “He was so important to shaping this city, and his impact nationwide cannot be overstated. ROB DELABY SUSAN G. KOMEN CENTRAL INDIANA ®
PINK TIE GUY OF THE YEAR
Writer / Keeley Miller Photographer / Brenda Walter Staples
When he was just 13 years old, Rob Delaby sat by his grandmother’s bed as she battled cancer. Without any power to help beyond comfort and prayer, he felt helpless. Years later, he faced another cancer diagnosis of a close friend. Rather than sitting back, Delaby decided to do as much as he could to make a difference. “When we found out in September 2014 that my good friend was diagnosed with breast cancer, I said that I would be damned to just sit there and watch it happen,” said Delaby. Delaby decided to raise money for Susan G. Komen and breast cancer research as a Pink Tie Guy, a group of community leaders who raise money for the fight against cancer. As owner of Shane’s Landscaping and an active member of the community, Delaby fit right in. Between June 1 and August 31 of this year, he went to everyone he knew in an attempt to raise the largest total donation.

“Every donation was a personal conversation or a handwritten letter with someone that I know personally, whether through business or personal relationships,” Delaby said. “I explained how I never do this, how I am always the first guy to be giving. Everyone knew me well enough that they took me very seriously and dug deep into their pockets.” After raising $23,100, Delaby was announced as 2015’s Pink Tie Guy during the annual Pink Tie Ball Sept. 19. “[Learning that I raised the most money] was amazing. I was determined to win. If I do something, I do it. If I tell someone I will go the extra mile, I go two extra miles, so I left it all on the table,” said Delaby. “I was thankful that my efforts were profound enough to put me in the position as the 2015 Pink Tie Guy.” Throughout his entire campaign, Delaby was motivated through the devastation he has seen cancer cause in his own life as well as others.
He used this passion to go above and beyond in terms of raising money. “When I talk about it, it brings tears to my eyes. I can’t quite explain it,” said Delaby. “I think that it has to do with the pain that I have deep inside from the loss that has been caused by cancer. I am driven by the fight inside to avenge the death of those that were taken by cancer.” Comparing himself to a supply chain to the front lines of the war against cancer, Delaby emphasized the importance of the community coming together to tackle the disease. “Breast cancer is a powerful disease that knows no boundaries, so we all need to come together to fight,” Delaby said. “It was my calling to generate resources to those on the front lines fighting the fight.” Delaby’s own business experience helped him during his campaign. After buying Shane’s
Landscaping in 2006 and building it to almost twice the previous size in under a decade as well as recently starting a new business, Premiere Trees and Tree Moving, Delaby has learned how to work with others to reach success. “I am driven with an effort to try to be there for everyone that needs me and fulfill all of my commitments,” said Delaby. “It is the same for my business and the same for my role as Pink Tie Guy.” With doctors so close to a cure, Delaby emphasized how much every donation truly matters. “Just go on the website and donate,” said Delaby. “We are so, so close to finding a cure. When you say every dollar helps, it truly does.” For more information on Pink Tie Guys or Susan G. Komen Central Indiana, visit komenindy.org.

It is important to me and to our company to be a part of the local Chamber.
“We strongly believe that it is important Executive Director Scott Keefer joined HCR not just to our company but also to the community in that people can look for ManorCare in 2008 as the Administrator a multitude of resources when needed of Summer Trace. “These events are great opportunities for businesses to network and get to know other business leaders as well as for them to get to know us and what we provide,” Keefer explained. “We are a referral-based business, and we work with people who are in the financial, legal and estate planning industries as they may have clients who will need our services either now or in the future.” In turn, Keefer said that they refer their clients to the appropriate professionals when they arrive at his facility with their affairs not entirely in order. With the recent merger of the Carmel and Fishers chambers as OneZone, Keefer feels that the combined membership has more than doubled their potential footprint. “We have even more exposure to businesses, professionals and business leaders within the OneZone network, and that will hopefully lead to growing our business even more,” Keefer concluded. “Being able to network with our fellow members and describe what our business is and how we can help each other out is very valuable.” For more information on the HCR ManorCare and Summer Trace Retirement Community, visit heartland-manorcare.com, and for more information about OneZone, visit onezonecommerce.com.

OneZone Discusses Education no-brainer for us. We are always looking for ways to get more involved in the community as all of us here feel very strongly about giving back.
Brian Geitner, President
John Wick, Chief Strategy Officer and General Counsel
Writer / Janelle Morrison As we go into the final quarter of 2015, one of the topics of discussion among educators, political leaders and business leaders is on the status of our state’s education and what kind of role local businesses might play during these discussions. Leading the discussion is OneZone which recently hosted a luncheon with the Carmel Clay Schools and Hamilton Southeastern Superintendents, speaking to the audience about the state’s school funding formula and the effects that the current formula will have beyond the temporary patchwork of impending referenda. This month, OneZone will host Purdue University President Mitch Daniels who will speak about changing the blueprint for making higher education affordable and what he is doing to craft the future of funding college education. One of OneZone’s platinum members, NextGear Capital, has taken the proverbial bull by its horns and is working to build up the Nancy Blondin Scholarship, a fund established in 2000 and named after

the remarkable Mrs. Nancy Blondin who passed away earlier this year. OneZone continues to honor Blondin’s legacy by awarding this educational scholarship to an outstanding high school, collegebound student each year. In order for students to qualify for the scholarship, they must meet specific criteria when applying but do not have to go to Carmel or Fishers High Schools. Students must also be sons or daughters of chamber members active in both in-school and outside school activities in their community and must submit a written portion to a committee made up of OneZone members. Patty Turner, Director of Events and Community Relations for NextGear Capital, sits on the scholarship committee and has challenged other members to get involved in the efforts to help fund the scholarship campaign and raise awareness of its impact. “At NextGear Capital, we understand the importance of building relationships with different organizations in our community, and that volunteering can have a positive impact on an employee’s everyday life,” Turner said. “Joining the Chamber was a
“One of the things that OneZone has done for us is they have the OneZone Young Professionals group, and we have a lot of up-and-comers in our company. We have a strong mentoring program at NextGear, and we do a lot of job mentoring. What I particularly like about OneZone is all of these different things that our people can get involved in, and it doesn’t matter if they live in Carmel or Greenwood or any other areas; they can get involved. “Our management encourages our employees to attend the Lunch and Learns and OneZone events during the day and on company time. We want to produce the next president of OneZone Young Professionals. It benefits our employees, our company and the cities of Carmel and Fishers.” When Turner first met Mo Merhoff, president of OneZone Commerce and the OneZone team, she was impressed by their knowledge and their philosophy. Turner wanted to get involved with the things that they are involved in and include NextGear’s employees at every opportunity. “We are involved with community events like CarmelFest and OneZone’s business expos such as Taste of the Chamber,” Turner explained. “Mo had asked us if we were interested in sponsoring the expo, and my thought was that this was an opportunity for us to pay it forward. Due to the nature of our business, our two tables would be better served if given to local notfor-profits to help advocate for their needs.

It is the perfect platform for organizations such as Chaucie’s Place and The Children’s TherAplay Foundation, Inc.” After a conversation with Merhoff about the Nancy Blondin Scholarship and how it benefits Chamber members’ employees and their families, Turner joined the scholarship committee, committed to an annual donation and proceeded to raise the bar and challenge other local businesses. “It blew me away that a minimum of $1,000 was being donated,” Turner said. “What we decided to do was donate $1,000 and then challenge businesses to match it. We have spoken and will continue to speak at lunches and other gatherings to promote the scholarship fund campaign. The first year that we made the challenge, we raised $8,000. “I feel very passionate about this scholarship. We need to advocate more

as I don’t think people look at it for the opportunity and investment that it is. It recognizes no borders. What we get back as employers and members has significant value. It is an opportunity to help our respective businesses and our employees to succeed. We are helping their children, our future leaders and next generation of professionals succeed.” Once again, Turner is calling out to OneZone members to match their efforts and partner with NextGear Capital to build the scholarship fund and take it to the next level.
atFishers.com / OCTOBER 2015 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 45
“We are challenging our members to match us and join us this year with our efforts to grow this scholarship,” Turner emphasized. “We would like to find companies to help us and partner with us, so that we can continue to grow this fund and spread the word. “I ask our members how can we help people who are as passionate and knowledgeable and want to make something succeed like the OneZone team does? How can we help them make it the best?”

Two Merge Into OneZone YPs Writer / Janelle Morrison When the Carmel and Fishers Chambers of Commerce merged as the OneZone earlier this year, their respective young professional (YP) organizations underwent their own merger and redevelopment of their groups, formerly Arrows and In Power. As a result, a more robust young professional organization, now known as OneZone Young Professionals, was established. The organization, run by a committee of young professional chamber members, is dedicated to connecting YPs under 40 through social networking, professional development, volunteerism and educational events. OneZone Young Professionals offers YPs in the surrounding areas opportunities to network and share work experiences with other YPs, develop leadership skills and explore ways to be involved with the chamber and the business community. YPs are also given the opportunity to attend a variety of events, volunteer, assist with philanthropic efforts and earn recognition within the organization for YP of the Year in which their peers vote for the candidates.

Our organization has the opportunity to help make connections and provide mentorship, networking skills and professional development for our members. “For example, our Lunch and Learns are a great opportunity and tool for us to provide these services. Our newly formed OneZone YP committee has written a strategic plan and is looking at our longterm objectives. We have discussed how we want our events and programs to look going into 2016. One of our primary goals is to continue to attract members, so that they really feel that they are getting value out of their membership.
“We want corporations and entities from Carmel, Fishers, Indianapolis and the surrounding areas to look to us and use us as a selling point when they are vetting young professionals as potential Originally leading the Arrows committee, employees and as an organization that Katie Smardo, OneZone YP co-chair, spoke their YP employees can engage and about the merger of the two YP groups connect with.
