ANNUAL
BREAKFAST AT WELLINGTON LOOKS TO RECRUIT MENTORS
Writer / Laurie Quinn
The sun won’t have risen yet, but the hum of prepping for the annual YMI breakfast fundraiser will commence in the early morning hours of September 15 for the 7 a.m. event. YMI (Youth Mentoring Initiative) is the Fishers-based nonprofit organization dedicated to providing HSE schools with free school-based mentor programs in grades 5-12. This annual breakfast is the main fundraiser for the organization. Businesses of all sizes can show support by sponsoring a table aiding an organization that helps the youth in the Fishers community. WDD Software, the title sponsor of this event, is excited to continue partnering with YMI after last year’s success. WDD Chief Strategy Officer Drew Linn stated, “YMI has a rich history of encouraging and impacting local youth in our community. They have an incredible organization that we plan to continue supporting.” Founded in 2008 by Darren Heil, YMI has seen a steady growth pattern over the past years. With over 200 in attendance at last year’s event, it was determined that a change in the venue was needed to accommodate for more attendees. The breakfast will be held at the Wellington Fishers Banquet and Conference Center, formerly known as the Fishers Conference Center, located at 9775 North by Northeast Blvd. just off of 96th Street and I-69. YMI Board Member and Fishers City Councilor At-Large Todd Zimmerman voiced his excitement with the new location by saying, “The surge of growth that YMI has seen recently generated the decision for an expanded venue. I am very pleased that the Wellington Fishers Banquet and Conference Center recognizes the impact that YMI has on the youth of our community and stepped forward to work with us on hosting YMI’s annual fundraising breakfast.”
The Wellington's Cami O'Herren will be hosting the YMI breakfast along with YMI's Darren Heil and Ann Marie Zielinski.
The Wellington Fishers Banquet and Conference Center was recently purchased by Greg and Cami O’Herren. It boasts a 4,200 square foot ballroom and conference rooms to host smaller groups. The ballroom
can be divided to make the room smaller and more intimate for smaller events. They also have their own catering service on the scene, so there is no worry about going out and finding a caterer! “Cami and I are excited to help host a great cause like YMI. Our participation is a small way to give back to the community,” O’Herren said. As YMI continues to grow with community support, the infrastructure grows too. YMI Executive Director Anne-Marie Zielinski said, “Supporting this initiative is a winwin for Fishers. Our 2020 goal of reaching 600 mentors and mentees is dependent on individuals and businesses involved with Fishers.” With that 2020 goal in mind, YMI is focused on entering the 2015 school year by being introduced to the fifth and sixth grade levels at Sand Creek Intermediate and Riverside
Intermediate and adding an additional 115 mentoring matches spread over six schools. A fundraiser based on growing a mentoring community in Fishers is vital to this organization as it survives solely on donations. The financial resources raised are needed to provide supplies, administrative support, mentor training and mentee programming that buoy the operations of this growing organization. For more information on how to get involved with YMI and the annual breakfast fundraiser, visit ymionline.org or call 317-370-9070. ANNUAL PASTA BOWL FIGHTS HUNGER WITH SCHOOL SPIRIT
Hamilton Southeastern School Board President John DeLucia holds the 2015 Pasta Bowl trophy. 10 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2015 / atFishers.com
Writer & Photographer / Keeley Miller
Every year, thousands of pounds of pasta are given to food pantries, thanks to the efforts of a single food drive. Donating almost 10,000 pounds in 2014 alone, the annual Pasta Bowl gives back to the community. Hamilton Southeastern School Board President John DeLucia founded the Pasta Bowl in 2012, hoping to create an alternative twist to a food drive that utilizes school spirit to help the less fortunate. “I think we are so fortunate in the United States and especially Fishers,” said DeLucia. “We have great schools, great families, and so just to engage all of them and giving to someone else is powerful.” The Pasta Bowl is a friendly competition between local high schools. During the football season, students bring pasta for donation, and the school with the most pasta wins. Pasta donated goes toward
food pantries as well as Second Helpings, a nonprofit community kitchen based in Indianapolis. Collection bins were placed at the annual Mudsock football game between Hamilton Southeastern and Fishers High Schools. Last year, Fishers High School took home the trophy after donating 1,600 pounds of pasta. “We wanted to capture the energy and excitement of the high school students and thought of the Spirit Award. The Spirit Award is nice, but feeding people is even nicer,” said DeLucia. “We got a trophy in hopes that the Pasta Bowl would be fun and competitive but also give back.” Last year, a goal was set to reach 10,000 pounds of pasta, an amount much larger than previous years. The Hamilton Southeastern Schools Foundation got on board, and it started to gain some traction. The YMCA, Proshred, fire stations, Citizen State Bank, Meijer and high school athletes
all volunteered to help out the food drive. Although the 10,000-pound goal was not met, they came close with over 8,000 pounds. “The challenge is going beyond Fishers,” said DeLucia. “If this is going to be the biggest pasta bowl collection in the universe, we need the universe to step up a little bit. It would be great to spur some interest with other high schools too, so it could grow beyond.” DeLucia hopes to expand the Pasta Bowl awards to local elementary, middle and junior high schools. Whichever school from each level brings in the most pasta would win their own trophy. “We might have to get more trophies, and that would be okay,” laughed DeLucia. Since inception 40 years ago, the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) has facilitated change by creating a strong impact across the country, enabling a more equitable playing field for women-owned businesses.
“I have witnessed that within our membership, the more engaged a member is, the more she gets out of it,” shares NAWBO Executive Director Mi’Chelle Bettner. “We have many opportunities to volunteer, attend events and serve on committees.”
Executive Board President Kathy Cabello founded her own company, Cabello Associates, a strategic marketing consultancy The result is a ripple effect, not only benefiting women but minority working with Fortune 500 companies. Cabello is focused on business owners as well. driving businesses forward, which is her leadership theme for her Board position, by creating growth opportunities for NAWBO The roots of NAWBO began with advocacy. In the 1970s, in order members and corporate partners in their mutually beneficial for a woman to get a business loan, a man had to to sign off on it. relationship. Realizing that women represented 54 percent of the voting public, a group of women in the D.C. area formed the first chapter of “Studies show that locally owned businesses give more to their NAWBO to positively impact public policy. communities,” states Cabello. “We at NAWBO provide the support and access to resources for growing businesses.” The ripple effect of these efforts 40 years ago is still being felt in progressive waves. NAWBO has broadened their scope from only being a vehicle for changing public policy, but it is a strong networking group of “I like to work within the NAWBO family and help these dynamic, successful and highly capable women who, when gathered companies grow,” shares Curren. “It also helps my company, and I in one room, create an electricity that is unmatched. enjoy helping others to further along their careers.” Each of these women is a game changer. A more intelligent, creative or professional grouping of individuals could not be found elsewhere.
Curren, a natural mentor and President-Elect of the NAWBO Board of Directors, was directly mentored by another female business owner which motivates her to give back.

At our meetings, the energy and excitement is palpable. The Indianapolis chapter of NAWBO is looked up to as a benchmark.” Cabello’s advice to women starting their own business is, “Be prepared to work very hard and surround yourself with a good core team.” Cabello established her goals with her Presidency as the following: “My desire is for women-owned businesses to grow and flourish, to go from good to GREAT and to economically impact our city, state and nation at unprecedented levels.” For more information, please visit NAWBOindy.org. FAREWELL TO FISHERS' FINEST CITY'S FIRST AND ONLY POLICE CHIEF ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT
18 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2015 / atFishers.com
Roy Holland, Suter & Kehl - Ground Breaking; Old crew; Kehl, Suter, Cox & Kruse; Kehl & Suter by Wall Patch; Kehl, Suter, Stevens & Holland - Moore St. PD; Major Suter at hiring
Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger . Photographer / Brian Brosmer
A
sk anyone on the streets of Fishers, and they’ll tell you who’s the finest in Fishers. The leader of Fishers’ finest, Chief George Kehl, announced his retirement in August after nearly 40 years as Police Chief. His retirement will be effective September 2016, making him the longest serving police chief in the greater Indianapolis metropolitan area.
Another secret to success that Kehl says he’s found to be valuable is sharing ideas. Kehl explains that all the local agencies share ideas about what works well and what can be improved. “If something works, why reinvent the wheel?” Kehl says. Whatever wheel Chief Kehl is using, it’s his passion for law enforcement and love for Fishers that keeps it turning. “I was born and raised here. I’ve got a lot at stake.”
Kehl says his decision to retire has been on his mind for a while, but timing was everything. “I didn’t come to this decision lightly, wondering about the right time. You’ve got to weigh what’s best for yourself, your family, the agency and the city. There’s no real way to describe it. You just know when it’s just the right time. It’s the right time, and I’m excited about it.”
His passion for law enforcement and community is a family affair. His brother retired from the Marion County Sheriff ’s Department, and another brother retired from the Carmel Fire Department. You might guess his son is also in law enforcement. Though Chief Kehl claims he didn’t unduly influence his son one way or another, his son has followed in his footsteps with the Noblesville Police Department.
The right time for Chief Kehl began in the 1970s when he joined the Hamilton County Sheriff ’s Reserve force. Having been interested in law enforcement since high school, he was anxious for the opportunity. Later, an opening for a part-time position opened for a Deputy Town Marshal in Fishers. Then on June 15, 1978, Kehl was appointed Chief of Police for the Fishers Police Department. He was the town’s first police officer.
You can see the love Chief Kehl has for Fishers in his eyes as he describes his beloved hometown back in the early days. He takes me back to 1978 as he describes his little town of just 1,500 people that didn’t have much around beyond Archer’s, a grocery store, John Deere, a Shell station and a couple of car lots. There wasn’t even a McDonald’s yet. He smiles as he describes their first squad cars purchased from the Indiana State Police with just 50,000 miles on them. “They were in great shape. We thought they were really nice,” Kehl recalls.
During his tenure, Chief Kehl has grown his force from one officer to its current staff of 103. That’s no accident. As you might imagine, a man with Kehl’s experience has an abundance of secrets to success. At the top, Kehl says, “You keep smarter people around you. No one person has success by themselves. It takes a group of people. We’ve always been diligent in hiring the best and the brightest. We have a commitment to bring people up through the ranks who want to excel, to achieve a higher level, and it’s worked.”
“No one could start out like I did. I was the only one. The town was small. Crime activity was very low,” Kehl says. But Fishers grew. The growth was slow and steady, much of it brought on by the expansion of I-69. He recalls the largest population boom was around the late 1990s, and crime activity didn’t start to increase until the new millennium.
atFishers.com / SEPTEMBER 2015 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 19
Chief Kehl with his wife Jennifer who is the city clerk for the City of Fishers
“We’re here to support and protect the community, but if you don’t have the support of the community behind you, you don’t have anything.”
Kehl beams with pride as he describes, “It was an exciting time. All the indicators were there that Fishers was going to blossom. We’re a crossroads for expansion.”
– the needs of the department and the community. That’s who he is.” It’s no wonder why Chief Kehl says he’ll miss seeing the people most of all.
And Chief Kehl’s department has blossomed. With a modern facility, modern equipment and modern technology that rivals that of many other local departments, the department continues to roll with the changes and thrive. “We’re very blessed to have what we have here,” Kehl adds.
It’s undeniable the department and the community will miss Chief Kehl’s presence. But he insists the transition will be seamless. Mitch Thompson has been named as Kehl’s successor for Chief, and Ed Gephardt will become the Assistant Chief. “I have every faith in Mitch’s abilities. He’s been groomed for it. He’ll step right in,” Kehl says. Thompson, who attends virtually every meeting with Kehl and is involved in nearly every aspect of administration, earned his spot by coming up through the ranks.
The department has been blessed with more than just its facilities and equipment. Under Chief Kehl’s watch, the department has weathered the storm of economic downturns by creating a plan to adjust budgets. Not a single officer was laid off. And miraculously, the department has remained immune to the political backlash over law enforcement that’s plagued departments nationwide. Instead, Kehl’s unit is so cohesive, the only thing his officers and the community have to offer up about the Chief is words of high praise and admiration. That’s not something many departments can say. Likewise, Kehl offers high praise and admiration to his unit and community. He says, “We’re here to support and protect the community, but if you don’t have the support of the community behind you, you don’t have anything.” Kehl shares his philosophy behind keeping the support of the community you serve. “A wise person once told me no matter how minute or unimportant you might think a matter is to someone, take the report anyway because if it’s important to that person, that’s reason enough.” Chief Kehl’s wife Jennifer smiles as she tells me why it’s no surprise her husband has the support of the department and community behind him. “He’s always put the needs of others before himself
Though the department’s transition will be seamless, Chief Kehl’s transition is undecided. He says he’ll remain available to the department as always but won’t likely remain in a law enforcement role. He says he can’t announce what his plans are just yet, but he assures that he’ll remain busy. “I’ll stay busy but at my own pace.” Jennifer says with a chuckle, “He won’t be happy if he’s not busy.” She says the biggest change she foresees is an end to the late night calls. Now we look to the future. As Chief Kehl leaves the department and community in the very capable hands of Thompson, he sees a city that’s worlds apart from the one he knew when he first started. He says he hopes people remember him for creating a safe community with great schools that he’s helped keep safe. As I walk out of the building and imagine what it will feel like for Chief Kehl, I notice the two retro style domed lights that read very simply “P O L I C E.” I can’t help but feel that perhaps Chief Kehl has created his own little Mayberry right here in Fishers, Indiana. Godspeed, Chief! We thank you for your service! Suzanne Huntzinger has a journalism degree from IU and has lived in the Geist community for 18 years.

ST. GEORGE MIDDLE EASTERN FESTIVAL The St. George Festival will be held Friday and Saturday, Sept. 18 and 19 for the second time at St. George Orthodox Christian Church, 10748 E. 116th St. in Fishers. The church sponsored the Middle Eastern Festival for 17 years at its prior location in Indianapolis, and the newly revamped festival builds on that Middle Eastern heritage, offering many popular features of previous events. “We’re still celebrating our Middle Eastern roots, but at the same time, we’re expanding the format,” explains Brad Tirey, festival director. “In the past, it’s been just food, drinks and dance. We are adding other activities, demonstrations, cultural events and more attractions for youth, including hot air balloons and a carnival area.”
Why change the name of the festival? Parish priest Father Nabil Hanna says, “We want to honor the various other traditions of all the people who have joined and make up St. George today. We are extremely diverse. We have people of backgrounds from many countries across the world.” What’s different about this festival? “Two things,” says Father Nabil. “One is that it’s at our new location on 116th Street with a new Byzantine temple and beautiful iconography. The Indianapolis Star called it ‘the number one thing to see or do in Fishers this summer.’ We are inviting everybody to come and celebrate with us.” Tours will explain the church’s unique architecture by award-winning Architect
Christ Kamages, as well as iconography that was hand painted on the walls and ceiling by Master Iconographer Dr. George Kordis of the University of Athens, Greece. “Secondly, we are trying to make the festival a little more interactive; not to just come, buy food and sit down with music playing in the background. You are able to move around, see different things, different demonstrations, try out different things while you are here,” explains Father Nabil. What’s going to be the same as previous festivals? “Fantastic food, live entertainment and all of the welcoming people of St. George who want our guests to see what we’re about,” says Tirey. “We hope to continue the spirit of hospitality for which we have become known.”
ABOUT ST. GEORGE ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN CHURCH St. George Orthodox Church was established in 1926 and ministers to Orthodox Christians of a great diversity of backgrounds. It is a parish of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America. After worshipping together for more than 50 years at its prior location on Sherman Drive, the parish purchased land in Fishers and built a new Byzantine-style church building. St. George’s congregation began worshipping in their new facilities in November 2013 and held the official door opening ceremony in May 2014. Photographer / Brian Brosmer 22 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2015 / atFishers.com
“Last year was our very first festival in Fishers,” says Father Nabil. “We were still getting accustomed to the new location, but we were very happy to be receiving all of our guests. This year, we will be making it even better”
SEPT. 18-19 Festival hours are 5-11 p.m. on Friday, September 18 and from noon to 11 p.m. on Saturday, September 19. Free admission. Offsite parking is available for $5 at Fall Creek Community Church, 10401 E. 116th St. (within walking distance). Shuttle buses will run throughout the festival. build our nonprofit and be competitive. We strive to find ways to stand out and still provide unique services. “One of our strategies is to develop and maintain strong corporate sponsorships that are looking to reach and assist communities that really are underserved. Companies like Bastian Solutions, American Structurepoint and the Indianapolis Colts organization have stepped in and offered not only financial contributions, but we will open up their businesses and give our scholars access with experiential learning trips where the students will learn about different jobs and job skills that are available to them. This allows our kids to dream beyond their circumstances.” Support from the local businesses is essential in sustaining organizations like DREAM Alive, and the business partners that support DREAM Alive engage because they share a philosophy with the

at Sullivan’s Steakhouse in Indianapolis. An annual event since 2004, Wishing on Stars was first hosted by former Indianapolis Colts Tight End Marcus Pollard. Fellow Colts players, Indiana Pacers, Indy 500 drivers and other local celebrities are expected to attend the event.
Dwayne Allen, Player Executive for DREAM Alive, has stepped into a leadership role within the organization to assist with Glenn’s mission. Allen, tight end for the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts, is making an impact in the lives of Indianapolis at-risk youth. Allen serves not only as the professional face of the organization but also participates in program development and implementation. “I grew up in the inner city of Fayetteville, North Carolina,” Allen said. “My story resonates so well with the children that we impact at DREAM Alive. I spend every opportunity that I get to spend with our kids. I see so much of myself in each and every one of them. I didn’t have anyone to look up to or have someone who looked like me, who came from similar situations as me, trying to inspire me. That is why I am passionate about wanting the kids to want more in their lives. “I want them to understand that regardless of where you come from, how you were raised or who you were raised by, you can’t allow your circumstances to dictate who you who are or who you want to be. That’s what our mission is all about. We educate the kids and provide resources and knowledge, so that they can go and be successful in their lives.” Allen will host the annual Wishing on Stars benefit on Monday, September 14 TownePost.com / SEPTEMBER 2015 / TOWNEPOST NETWORK
The evening will feature a cocktail reception, followed by celebrity introductions, dinner and a silent and live auction. The players and other celebrities are willing to sign autographs, serve cocktails, personalize voicemails, perform guests’ favorite songs and spend time with attendees in a relaxed, enjoyable private environment of 150-200 guests.
In addition to Allen, numerous fellow Colts players are expected to attend. Past attendees include Glenn, Pat McAfee, Tamika Catchings, Anthony Castanzo, T.Y. Hilton, Coby Fleener, Matt Hasselbeck, Dallas Clark, Peyton Manning, David Thornton, Jeff Saturday, Ken Dilger, Roy Hibbert, Reggie Wayne, Marcus Pollard, Bob Sanders, Joseph Addai, Gary Brackett, Marlin Jackson,
Robert Mathis, Chris Lytle and more. “This event is our largest fundraiser for DREAM Alive, and all of the resources that are collected go directly towards the kids and to supply our DREAM coaches with resources that they need to impact their lives,” Allen explained. “Businesses can donate monetarily, and that helps to supply the necessary resources, but what

is most costly to the businesses and is most cherished by DREAM Alive is the organization’s time. “By them opening their doors to our programs so that we can take the kids to different businesses around Indianapolis and around the state, we can expose the kids to things outside of the inner city. Little by little, this begins to break down the barriers of their world. We take them for walks around university campuses or to a business like WTHR or a military base to expose them,so that they can begin to dream bigger. “As we continue to grow and obtain more funding, we can expand our reach and develop a model that is replicable in cities throughout the country. Our goal is to replicate the programs in all NFL host cities and team up with players from those teams who will then engage their local school corporations. “Here in Indianapolis, we want to expand in all IPS schools and surrounding areas, so that we can serve the underserved and fill in the gaps, so that no child falls in between. We want to see all children have opportunities to resources that they need to become successful adults. Ultimately, that is how it should be.” For more information about the DREAM Alive, visit dreamaliveinc.org.

NEW YOGURTZ OPENS IN FISHERS
Micky Virdi, owner/ manager of Yogurtz in Fishers
Writer / Pat Carlini
You might say it was a case of being in the right place at the right time, but during a recent stroll to see what’s new at The Depot at Nickel Plate along 116th St. in Fishers, we peaked into the new Yogurtz and heard, “Welcome! We just opened for the very first time!" It was their soft opening on July 15, and my 18-year-old daughter Lexi Miller and I were their very first customers! As fans of frozen yogurt, we were ready to give it a try! The inside décor is clean and colorful with pink and lime green tiled walls and white modular seating. The back wall features a variety of flavors including traditional strawberry and chocolate to a salted caramel pretzel flavor and NSA (no sugar added) vanilla. The center of the room is filled with every topping imaginable! Lexi swirled together coconut and chocolate topped with brownie bites, and I tried my new favorite – gluten free, fat free watermelon sorbet! Lexi says she gives the new yogurt shop a big thumbs up! “I know it’s brand new, but it just tastes so fresh, and the variety of toppings to choose from is great!" Owner/Manager Micky Virdi says that’s exactly what they are going for. “We want to offer fresh frozen yogurt with four new flavors each week and a topping bar that the customer knows they can find just about anything they want!” The “family-owned, self-serve frozen yogurt spot” also sells take home containers of yogurt and plans to be open to private parties and community events. Yogurtz’s grand opening was slated for Saturday, July 25 in the spot just down from Brixx restaurant and next to the new Dottie Couture Boutique in the new Fishers Marketplace. For more information, visit yogurtz.net. Pat Carlini is an experienced television/radio personality associated with NBC in Indianapolis and the syndicated Bob & Tom Show. CONNECTING WOMEN IN TECH Writer / Kara Reibel
Inspired by chance interactions with a small number of women in the entrepreneurial co-working space Launch Fishers, Sticksnleaves’ VP of Corporate Development and Operations Kristen Cooper founded a movement committed to identifying, educating and connecting women entrepreneurs. The Launch Ladies are turning one in August, and they certainly have something to celebrate. “When I started working with Sticksnleaves, I wanted to get to know as many people as possible,” shares Cooper. “Never would have guessed that I would meet so many awesome women while putting on lip gloss in the ladies room. One day when I was literally negotiating a contract in the bathroom, I decided that we should be more purposeful about meeting instead of just waiting to bump into each other. So I put lunch on our calendars and decided to invite a few friends." The first Launch Ladies luncheon was held in August 2014 – three people attended.
Cooper tapped into her vCards and reached out to other women she knew, opening the circle of influence outside of Launch Fishers. Each month the group grew steadily, fueling connections and leading to new business. “Budding and seasoned entrepreneurs sit next to one another, so the conversations are really interesting," says Cooper. “Several of our attendees are noodling on ideas for a new product or service. We’ve worked really hard to create an atmosphere that is inclusive and welcoming to new people.” This past February, Scott Jones and Eleven Fifty hosted The Launch Ladies for lunch, which sold over capacity. ”Discussions around how to launch a business while working full-time, supporting a spouse, being a mom and volunteering in the community are a common theme,” shares Cooper. “The monthly luncheons have been a great platform to build meaningful relationships; however, it became clear that more could be done to support aspiring first-time entrepreneurs.” 34 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2015 / atFishers.com
“These incredibly talented women needed the structure, consistency and accountability to launch a successful business,” said Cooper. “Startup Study Halls will provide students with an opportunity to learn from C-level executives [C stands for chief] and provide the dedicated time to focus on a single challenge related to the student’s business.” Julie Warnecke, Owner of Found Search + Marketing, served as the inaugural speaker on July 29. Startup Study Halls are free; however, registration is required. On Tuesday, August 25, The Launch Ladies will hold their monthly luncheon at Tilly’s in Fishers. “Sharon Moore [owner of Tilly’s] does a gorgeous high tea. We love supporting women-owned businesses, and a great birthday party is just icing on the cake!” said Cooper. Both men and women are invited to attend all of The Launch Ladies events. Learn more and register at TheLaunchLadies.org.
“BUDDING AND SEASONED ENTREPRENEURS SIT NEXT TO ONE ANOTHER, SO THE CONVERSATIONS ARE REALLY INTERESTING. WE’VE WORKED REALLY HARD TO CREATE AN ATMOSPHERE THAT IS INCLUSIVE AND WELCOMING TO NEW PEOPLE.”

GETTING A KICK OUT OF GUNS
Tim’s Shooting Academy of Westfield is where it’s at if you want to channel your inner tough-guy…or just hone in on your shooting skills! It’s a family-owned indoor shooting range focused on safety and education, making it one of the BEST ranges in the state. Owner Tim Tomich and his knowledgable and friendly staff care very much about the entire customer experience. From novices to expert shooters, all feel welcome! They also operate a full-service firearms store staffed with experts to help you “safely and confidently enjoy your sport.” Everything you’ll need is available, including ammunition, personal eye and ear protection and targets. Of course, they also have a nice variety of guns and rifles for rent to anyone over 21. Our experience was no less than fantastic! While inexperience doesn’t matter here, safety certainly does. In fact, Tim’s #1 priority is safety, starting with a short video for all shooters on gun safety and rules of the range. Range Safety Officers (RSOs) are always present to assist and answer all questions or concerns. There are classes for beginners, women and expert shooters, including private lessons which are highly recommended for all first-timers. Why? Because while Tim’s has beginning basic pistols classes, sitting in a classroom with up to 15 people of little experience might be a little overwhelming, and private lessons allow you to advance at your own pace and comfort level. Sounds like just our speed! Eager to begin, your Girls About Town headed to the classroom for the eight minute video presentation where we learned all about firearm safety and the Golden Rules of the NRA*. We were educated as well on the use of the oh-so-important command, cease fire! When a cease fire is called out, all shooters must stop immediately, keeping their firearm pointed down range, finger off the trigger and await further commands.

Chalene Braun, Adriane Tritask (one of the NRA certified instructors), Tim Tomich and Rachel Quade.
Anyone may call a cease fire if you’re ever concerned about a safety compromise of any kind. Completing our safety class earned us our Orientation Card and access to their high-tech rifle and handgun indoor range. Next up, getting fitted for a pistol! Adriane, one of their many NRA certified instructors, helped us choose a gun to shoot from Tim’s large selection of rentals. We both finally settled on the most popular handgun in the U.S…a Glock! We then had to select what ammunition to shoot for our levels. 9mm ammunition seemed just right, so we put on our ear and eye protective wear and headed out to the 15 indoor shooting lanes. We were pretty impressed with the range, including the state-of-the-art ventilation and containment systems designed for comfort and, you guessed it, shooter safety! We learned a lot in a short amount of time, including how to properly hold the pistol, load and unload the ammunition, set our
target distance, shooting etiquette and sight alignment. We have to admit we were pretty nervous at this point….Time to pull the trigger! AND WE DID…e v e r s o g e n t l y! Both of our first shots landed in the bullseye range! Ladies!!! The recoil on our pistols wasn’t bad at all!! Do not let your fear of the unknown stop you from experiencing this!! No one will be watching you, except the RSOs to ensure you are all safe! It was AWESOME, not to mention EMPOWERING!!! Having never shot a handgun, it was exhilarating to finally experience the thrill of shooting a pistol! We turned our fear into a great respect for guns! What a kick!! Bucket list #10 DONE!!! Many thanks to Tim and all his staff at Tim’s Shooting Academy of Westfield! We had so much fun! They offer annual individual and family memberships that are super affordable. Our kids have already asked to go shooting. Why not?! We had a BLAST! 38 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2015 / atFishers.com

The Hawthorns Golf and Country Club launched a new Wine Club in July, meeting the third Wednesday of every month, and is open to all members, not just their wine locker members. The theme for August was South American gems. Six wines were presented by a sommelier who shared the regional history and origin of each ingredient inside the bottles. The Wine Club evenings include a dinner buffet. “I love wine, but it’s the education about the wine that I enjoy,” shares member Jim Martin. “It’s also seeing neighbors and friends and enjoying a lovely evening.”
THE HAWTHORNS
Wine Club
“The Club is seeing some exciting changes,” shares Beverage Specialist Michelle Collins. “In addition to the Wine Club, we hope to add a Draft Beer Club once the Player’s Lounge reopens.” The renovations are currently underway, increasing the seating at the bar from nine seats to 20, and a draft beer system with six to eight beers is being installed featuring all local craft beers. The Player’s Lounge upgrade is part of a $1.2 million capital improvement campaign. Other changes will include a new drink list and new wines. The Hawthorns Golf and Country Club was recently purchased by Concert Golf Partners which now owns private golf clubs and resorts across the country. ROYALS FOR THE CURE: PINK NIGHT
Students and parents alike dress in pink to show support for Susan G. Komen of Central Indiana
Writer / Keeley Miller
Each year, the Hamilton Southeastern football team dons pink knee-high socks at the annual Royals For the Cure Pink Night, a game benefitting Susan G. Komen and the fight against cancer. This year, that night will fall on September 4 at a home game against Avon. “Everybody is touched by it in some way, and everyone really embraces this game. Even the referees wear pink socks,” said Lisa Heiden Peters, organizer of the event. “Each year, it has gotten bigger and bigger. This year, it is going to explode.” A honorary breast cancer survivor is recognized every year, performing the coin toss and sitting on the bench. Tom Reece, who passed away from cancer at the end of May, will be honored this year with a speech and plaque that will be presented to his wife and son.
All proceeds from the event will go toward Komen. In the new Royal Tailgate Town, volunteers will be selling bandanas, bracelets, beads and tattoos. Brand new decorations will fill the stadium. The game is supported by the football team, coaches, cheerleaders, band, color guard and the community. “We can always use volunteers,” said Peters. “We have a group of moms who are very passionate and are doing a lot of work to help out. Donations will also be collected during halftime that will go to Komen.” For more information, visit facebook.com/royalsforthecure.

THE PLACE TO BE Writer / Lisa Kitchen Butt Photographer / Keeley Miller
“I want people to say the place to be is Casler’s Kitchen and Bar,” says Randy De John, managing partner for the Fishers restaurant located on the southeast corner of 116th Street and Olio Road. Bringing together sports watching, good food and fan camaraderie is the goal of this family-owned business. Sports watching starts and stops here…at least for the Indianapolis Colts and Indiana University basketball. With 51 TVs, Casler’s is the fans’ choice for watching all sports and eating a reasonably priced meal. A cornerstone of the Fishers community since April 2006, Casler’s was built on family. Rick Fonseca took over ownership in late 2009 and has not looked back. De John, managing partner since 2009, embraces and engages all that is Casler’s.
some wonderful acts coming in on Friday and Saturday nights to entertain our guests. Lastly, we treat every customer as if they were our own family,” said De John. On NFL football Sunday, fans throw footballs through a hoop, and Casler’s provides prizes such as NFL jerseys, Weber grills, free drinks, iPads and local gift cards. During IU basketball games, Hoosier faithful shoot free throws for prizes. And during every game, “The Star-Spangled Banner” is sung at halftime, adding to the non-stop entertainment and enthusiasm. De John is no novice to running a successful restaurant. With 21 years in the restaurant business, he has a proven track record of growing a loyal following which is evident at Casler’s. Casler’s provides 30 taps, 21 different wines and a wide and varied menu to tempt your culinary tastes.
Bringing the family to Casler’s but concerned about a toddler and kid-friendly menu? No “Success comes from my partnership with the worries.
