MEET COACH BEN WACHTEL OF SOUTHEASTERN SWIM CLUB

get better every day.”
He’s tall. He’s talented. He’s a lean, mean swimming machine. Meet Coach Ben Wachtel of Southeastern Swim Club (SSC).
Wachtel went on to earn a degree in professional writing and creative writing at Purdue. Then after graduating, Wachtel scored his dream job with the digital marketing superstars of Element Three. Helping companies maximize their internet marketing presence, Element Three recognized Wachtel’s leadership qualities and snatched him to join their team as a Copywriter and then later as their Social Media Specialist.
Wachtel, former Boiler swim team captain for two years, was hired as the team’s Associate Head Coach for the Seniors practice group under Head Coach Andy Pedersen and Head Coach of the Blue Runners practice group. As if that’s not enough for this Indiana high school swimming and diving Hall of Famer and 2012 Olympic Trials qualifier, he’s also serving as the club’s Social Media Director, a role that supports the Club’s mission of ongoing growth.
With a demanding job, it seemed Wachtel’s plate could overflow. But Wachtel never stopped feeling the strong current of the pool, and he returned in 2014, this time as a coach. For two years, he balanced his fullFor Coach Ben, the move up was business as time job at Element Three with coaching usual. But right off the block, he’s given the part-time for SSC. each day and learning to embrace the challenge of growing new skills is what's most important.” Although relatively new to the coaching world, Wachtel has already developed an effective coaching style and philosophy that incorporates the lessons from his coaches and his personal life experiences. On top of his list is building a relationship with the swimmers. Wachtel says, “Coaching is about connecting and developing trusting relationships with the kids. If you care about the kids you coach, it's readily apparent, and that gives you the tremendous responsibility to guide them with care. I want to build a strong enough relationship with my swimmers and find ways to challenge them and keep them focused on their goals. Having the opportunity to contribute to a young person’s life is the most meaningful thing I could ever imagine doing. That’s why I’m here.” Wachtel doesn’t expect each day to be filled with smooth water and fast swims. He says, “Kids who come to practice every day eager to get better usually will, but some expect results to come without hard work. It takes a long time for kids to find satisfaction in putting in the effort required to be good at something like swimming. That's part of what I enjoy about coaching.” As Wachtel rides the wave of his first year as full-time coach, he won’t promise to stay in his lane. But he offers some other promises. He says, “I promise to always put the kids first, be a positive influence in their lives, support and encourage them tirelessly and provide structure and learning experiences that help them grow. There are really special things happening here. I see it every day. “At SSC, we equip young people with lifelong skills. We're not just training great swimmers; we’re developing tomorrow's community leaders and champions, not just in the pool but in life, to respect all and fear none.”

SAMANO’S TAQUERIA BRINGS AUTHENTIC MEXICAN FOOD TO FISHERS
Writer / Demi Lawrence
Hamilton Town Center is full of restaurants of all different shapes, sizes and styles. Even then, Samano’s Taqueria sticks out as one of the most unique in the area. Opening shop this past March, Mexico City native and owner Adrian wanted to bring a different kind of Mexican food to Fishers.
and everyone likes it. It’s fresh,” Adrian explained. “The reason I didn’t want to do a lot of marketing for the restaurant is because if I have a line out the door, it’s going to be slow because we make everything on spot.” Aside from burritos, Samano’s offers tortas (sandwiches), gringas (quesadillas) and a variety of Mexican desserts. It’s fresh, simple and delicious. They also have vegetarian options and a kids’ menu, making it any Mexican food lover’s hotspot.
“Not many places sell tacos around here, and if you want a good taco, you have to drive pretty far for it,” Adrian said. “Everyone loves Mexican food, so I wanted to open a restaurant with more authentic “It’s a place that I hope everyone will enjoy and come back to. This food. If I’m going to make something, I’m going to make it right.” has been a dream of mine, having my own restaurant. I didn’t think it’d ever go through, but that was the goal,” Adrian said. Samano’s features a variety of different tacos and burritos with Adrian’s Burrito easily being the best-selling. This heaping dish Working for many restaurants in the past, like McAlister’s and City offers a bacon-wrapped flour tortilla with your choice of chicken or Barbeque, he finally tired of working for someone else, and that’s steak, then avocado, chipotle dressing, green peppers, rice, beans when he decided to open Samano’s. “I’m working hard with a lot of and cheese. long hours, but I hope that it all pays off soon.” Adrian’s Burrito was made when Adrian was just messing around with some dish options, and when this unique burrito got extensive social media attention, Samano’s decided to add it to the menu. Needless to say, it could easily feed two people and then some.
Samano’s is located just off Campus Parkway on Bergen Boulevard, attached to the Shell gas station. Visit samanosmexicanfood.com to see their menu.

FISHERS IS TRUE BLUE and appreciation for the men and women in blue. Recently, the Fishers Police Department held their annual National Night Out (NNO). NNO is a nationwide organization dedicated to the development, maintenance and protection of community-based, law enforcement-affiliated crime prevention activities. NNO was developed as a crime prevention program that emphasizes building a partnership between the police and the community.
Writer / Janelle Morrison
Every man and woman that puts on a uniform representing his or her police department, public safety agency or branch of military is somebody’s someone. They are sons, daughters, husbands, wives, brothers, sisters, fathers or mothers. They have hopes, dreams and fears just like everyone else. What makes these individuals particularly unique is that they are willing to risk their lives on a daily basis for someone that they may never meet. They laugh, shed tears and yes, they can even be wounded and die. As a community, we rely on these brave men and women to protect and serve us. The 21st century has begun a new era of insecurity and scrutiny on the effectiveness of public safety nationwide. Police departments across the nation have been under direct attack, and officers have been targeted and killed in the line of duty. Beyond the grim and horrific accounts of these atrocities are the stories of honor, love
Chief George Kehl has valiantly served as the chief of police for the Fishers Police Department for 38 years. He shared his thoughts on attending his last NNO as the chief of police and on the status of the department from which he will retire September 30, 2016. “It was probably the best NNO that we’ve had in a long time as far as the community support is concerned,” he expressed. “We hosted a couple thousand people at our open house that night. We had a K9 demonstration and different activities for kids. The interaction with the citizens that night was overwhelming. “You just can’t fathom all of the thank yous, hugs and photo opportunities that we had. It was just unbelievable. Our community supports us without question. We do a lot to gain their support with our outreach programs. We have programs such as the Teen Academy, Citizen’s Police Academy, the Citizen’s Police Academy Alumni Group, the FPD Explorer Academy and the City Government Academy.” The FPD has also maintained a very productive relationship with the Hamilton Southeastern Schools’ administrators over the decades. Having worked closely with the superintendents over the years and continuing to build that relationship with 16 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2016 / atFishers.com
the current HSE Superintendent, Dr. Allen Bourff has enabled the FPD to engage students in a positive and non-threatening environment through a myriad of programs that the department and the school district collaborates on. Assistant Police Chief Mitch Thompson weighed in on that relationship with the schools’ administrators and the presence that the FPD has in the schools’ district. “Our department has enjoyed a great relationship with Hamilton Southeastern Schools dating back to the 1980s,” Thompson said. “We obtained a grant through the Department of Justice to implement our School Resource Program that enabled us to have two officers in the schools when we first began the program. We currently have seven officers assigned to the schools. “One of the best ways to detour something from happening in schools is to know that there are police officers in the schools. We know that as a community, we’re only as good as our schools are, so we’re involved with outreach programs like Parent Nights, Internet Safety, D.A.R.E. and other youth mentoring initiatives such as the Youth Assistance Program. “Serving the community has been Chief Kehl’s philosophy since day one. For us, it is about a positive interaction with the community. Our engagement makes a huge difference in how our community sees us and how we see our community. We continue to receive a lot of positive support by ways of letters, social media posts and shares and the occasional gift of food.” Assistant Chief Thompson spoke about the department’s engagement with local businesses as well. “We have identified a particular pocket of
Fishers that is responsible for a significant amount of our crime in the 96th and Lantern Road area. We identified that pocket was responsible for 22% of our crime in 2015. These Part 1 crimes being defined as thefts, motor vehicle thefts and retail thefts are what’s predominantly occurring down in that area, so we implemented a program within our agency working with other city departments. “We work closely with the Code Enforcement Department, Fire Department and the EMT services, to name a few, and we are also working with the business community in the area to change the crime and the perception of crime in that area. Having those partnerships and working through the various groups, we have made an impact. It has been about six months now, and we have seen a decline in crime, and more importantly, we have seen the perception of crime improve. The businesses have been very supportive of the efforts that have gone on there. “What is really exciting is that the Mayor Fadness, along with our Public Works Department, has decided that we are going to take over maintaining the interchanges along the interstate that lead people into our community. What used to be maintained by the state is now maintained by the City of Fishers, and when you see that the grass is mowed, it’s because they’re taking care of it at a local level. It’s a part of the overall beautification effort, and that makes an impact on crime as well. That’s just an example of the many things that we are excited about as we continue to grow our partnerships and and have an impact on what’s going on in our community.” Looking ahead into the future and with Chief Kehl’s impending retirement, both Kehl and Thompson feel that their department of 103 sworn officers and eight civilians is well-trained and prepared to continue to operate under the values and principles that Chief Kehl has instilled over the decades. Their department proudly has 10 active officers who were invited and completed the elite FBI National Academy. The FBI National Academy is a professional course of study for U.S. and international
law enforcement managers nominated by their agency heads because of demonstrated leadership qualities. The 10-week program, which provides coursework in intelligence theory, terrorism and terrorist mindsets, management science, law, behavioral science, law enforcement communication and forensic science, serves to improve the administration of justice in police departments and agencies at home and abroad and to raise law enforcement standards, knowledge and cooperation worldwide. Participation in this academy is by invitation only. Chief Kehl and Assistant Chief Thompson are former graduates of the academy and are past presidents of the FBI Citizens Academy Indiana Chapter.
do their job, Chief Kehl is really good about allowing people to be creative and come up with new ideas and having them take credit for that idea. “I have worked directly for him since 1999 and have been very fortunate to have been taken under his wing, so I have a lot of the traits that he has engrained in me. Knowing that he’s always available for consultations is very helpful as I prepare to step into his role after September.” For more information on the FPD’s outreach programs and academies, visit fishers.in.us/police.
Chief Kehl is hopeful that young men and women who are considering a career in law enforcement will not be detoured by the current anti-authority climate that is currently afflicting our nation. “It is probably the most difficult time that we’ve ever had to hire law enforcement officers because of all of the killings that have been going on,” Kehl stated. “What I want people to know is that this is a great profession, and it is very rewarding. We make sure that we have conversations with our patrol officers about safety and about being alert. We remind them of that before every shift every day. “We go to the maximum to make sure that our officers are safe. We’ve been through this type of era before, though probably not to this extreme. It will pass over time but not until we instill in people’s minds that they have to start having respect for themselves, their communities and other people. We’ve got a long road ahead of us.” Having been with the FPD for 26 years, Assistant Chief Thompson is prepared to assume his new role and to step into the shoes of his chief and mentor. “What a tough act to follow,” Thompson emphasized. “One of the reasons why our agency has been successful is because of consistency and having the same chief throughout that tenure. ST. GEORGE FESTIVAL OFFERS MIDDLE EASTERN FOOD AND DANCE Writer / David E. Summer
Samantha Saba coordinates the children’s dance performances at the St. George Festival held September 16-17 at the church on 116th Street in Fishers. Samantha, whose parents are Palestinian Christian immigrants, says she is teaching the girls to dance to Middle Eastern songs. The group includes about a dozen girls ranging in age from 3 to 12. “I have always loved kids,” she says. “You can have the worst day possible, but kids can change your whole perspective. They warm my heart.” Besides teaching Sunday School and advising the St. George teenagers, Samantha coaches a YMCA children’s basketball team. She grew up in Indianapolis and graduated from IUPUI. Food, always the main attraction at the St. George Festival, will include separate booths selling lamb shanks, falafel, grape leaves, gyros, vegetarian plates and honey balls as well as a bake shop with Middle Eastern pastries. Entertainment includes live music and a children’s carnival with bounce houses and a zip line. A silent auction with gifts from local merchants is always a highlight. Last year’s attendance was estimated at 7,000. Fr. Nabil Hanna, pastor, says, “Our festival historically offers a sense of intimacy, and guests see us as a family. This is our home, and we are trying to share a little about ourselves, our faith and our background. It presents our heritage of faith, hospitality, good food, music and crafts from our roots in the Holy Land, the Middle East and the cultures that make up our congregation.” He says it originated as the Middle Eastern Festival in 1995 and was renamed the “St. George Festival” in 2014 after the church moved from its old location on Sherman Drive. Founded by Middle Eastern immigrants, the diverse congregation now includes a large number of Protestant converts and families with backgrounds from more than 15 countries. Susie Baranyk also grew up at St. George Orthodox Church, which her grandparents, who were Syrian Christian immigrants, helped found in 1926. Susie coordinates several volunteer greeters who ride the shuttle buses with guests from the off-site parking lot at Lutheran Journey Ministries about a half-mile away on 116th Street. “We talk about the festival, the various food booths, the entertainment and what to expect. We tell them about the church tours, which explain the unique architecture and the iconography. We tell them how much we appreciate their taking the time to visit our festival,” says Susie. “I hope our guests will leave appreciating the artistic beauty of the church and learning a little about our faith.”

Bob Nichols was a visionary who knew that in America, dreams can come true if you work hard and never give up! When he got out of the Marine Corps in 1958, he had no car, no money and some would say no future. What he did have was a dream of being successful, and the willpower to make it happen. He borrowed ten dollars from his mother and with the help of Orville “Ducky” Love, an Indianapolis car dealer who sold him a car, a Curtis key machine, some key code books, and keys on credit, he was in business. Mr. Love asked him to cut 18 keys at a dollar each and became his first customer. Bob wentup and down Virginia Avenue cutting keys and repairing locks all day long. His most frequent customer was Ed Clark, who was known as the used car king of east Washington Street. Mr. Clark would call Bob every morning and then he’d call him back all day long. Finally, Bob said “Ed, I’m coming back so much all day long, I’m losing money.” Clark replied, “You should charge me a service call charge when you come to cover your costs of making a trip. How about you charge me a $3.50 trip charge?” With that, Bob was on his way. Bob’s
TEN DOLLARS AND A DREAM B
son Mike started working for the company when he was 12, cutting keys and delivering them on his motorbike. Bob’s business grew so much that he opened his first shop on Shelby Street. Business really took off and his customers were impressed with his knowledge of locksmithing and safe repair. As the business grew, he and his son ran service all over the city and surrounding areas. Bob adopted his slogan “Don’t get robbed, call Bob!” and the company still uses it to this day. Bob and Mr. Maurice Bornman, who owned Bornman Safe and Lock, were instrumental in forming the first locksmith association in Indiana, the Associated Locksmiths of Greater Indiana, ALOGI. Mr. Bornman was the first vice president and Bob was the first president from 1972 to 1974. After a series of moves to larger and larger locations, Bob and Mike later opened a shop at 5631 Madison Avenue in 1981. The store featured a vehicle bay, a warehouse, and two safe showrooms. Bob later left the lock shop in the capable hands of Mike while he moved to Sevierville, Tennessee. When he got to Sevierville, he started the Golden Carat jewelry store and Nichols Properties and INDY METRO / SEPTEMBER 2016 / TownePost.com
became a successful real estate developer. His first love was always the lock shop. In 2013 Bob learned that he had cancer. Mike came to visit and later died unexpectedly in July of 2013. Bob came back to Indianapolis to attend his funeral. Bob died three months later. The business was closed for several months and many thought that the dream had died with the passing of Bob and his son Mike. Bob Nichols
Tim Young, Bob’s youngest son (who had worked in the business as a teenager) purchased the business in 2013, buying a new location at 5651 Madison Avenue (two doors down from the one that Bob and Mike built) and opening a second location in Fishers at 8240 E. 96th Street, in front of the Walmart. Tim has expanded the staff to 10 and has introduced many technological innovations into the business, such as GPS dispatching of service vehicles, as well as adding additional capabilities to the company’s product and service offerings, such as access control products. For 58 years Bob’s Master Safe and Lock Service has provided the best security hardware and services for homes and businesses at a great price. Each location offers many types of safes, and the company’s website offers an online safe store where customers can get free shipping on safes. Safe combination changing and safe opening are also offered.
In a world of change, our focus is steadfast.
The company is also proud to offer restricted key systems from Abloy, DOM and Medeco….with these patent protected systems, only Bob’s can cut the key, and only the customer can authorize the key to be made, saving the customer the expense of rekeying locks when employees are terminated or keys loaned out. The company can make the transponder chip and laser cut keys that are on the new cars, as well as make keys by VIN for most vehicles at both locations. The company also sells and services designer door hardware from EMTEK in both stores. And of course, they still offer rekeying and key duplication services both in their stores and in their trucks. Tim’s goal is to continue Bob’s vision of treating customers as family and providing the best possible products and services at the best prices, keeping Bob’s dream a reality for generations to come!

AT&T PRESIDENT
BILL SOARDS
ON INNOVATION
Entering the office of Indiana’s President of AT&T is a step back in time to the days of Mad Men. The woodwork and furnishings are of a different era. Yet regardless of the resurgence in popularity of mid-century furniture and design aesthetic, the offices are being updated to reflect a change in the times.
who owned a vending machine company and four retail stores, but is best known for serving twenty years as a state legislator. There’s no doubt the influence his father had on Bill’s own civic engagement and career mindset. At the age of twenty-three, Bill was elected and served for four years on the Indianapolis City County Council. After moving to Zionsville with his wife and daughters, he served for an additional five years on the Boone County Council.
As President of AT&T, Bill Soards brings a unique element of youth and energy to his position. Progressive and forward thinking, his leadership comes at a critical time. While all of his predecessors have looked toward the horizon, Soards embraces change like no one before him.
Perhaps the influence of staying current and ahead of trends is what drives him, yet this is someone who is not afraid to take risks. With the dynamics of technological evolution, AT&T is keeping up by supporting tech startup communities to foster STEM.
The remodeling efforts in the building reflect the evolving culture of a company as it strives to stay ahead of the technology of tomorrow. While Bill appreciates the nostalgia and history of his office, he welcomes change.
One way is through sponsorship of Eleven Fifty Academy’s classrooms located inside Launch Fishers. With demand for careers in the technology field, cultivating these students now is critical to Indiana’s tomorrow. “Innovation drives what we do,” says Soards. “A shift in innovation creates change and with the pace of technology, this is a constant. Supporting Eleven Fifty Academy is a natural partnership for us.”
Writer / Kara Reibel Photographer / Brian Brosmer
Bill grew up on Indy’s north side and graduated from North Central High School and then studied at Butler University where he majored in political science and telecommunications. He’s fortunate to have known at a young age where his interests lie, and not only majored in them, is living them daily. Bill’s father was an entrepreneur
“The need for a skilled tech workforce cannot be overstated,” says John Qualls, President of Eleven Fifty Academy. “We are grateful that AT&T shares our vision, for it’s TownePost.com / SEPTEMBER 2016 / INDY METRO
partnerships such as theirs that will enable us to skill up Hoosiers to meet the demand for jobs in this field, which is increasing exponentially.” The AT&T Engagement Center inside of Launch Fishers also includes an AT&T space for product demos and prominent advertising to their members. Bill refers to the partnership with Launch Fishers as “an experiment”, which is fitting since experiments are what lead to innovation. ”A presence inside of Launch Fishers is equally beneficial for internal as well as external reasons. We are a global, integrated communications company providing wireless and broadband access but our industry is changing rapidly,” states Bill. “We are creating innovation internally and we want our employees to be a part of the innovative community as a whole.” “AT&T has been an awesome partner with Launch Fishers. From conducting hackathons with our community, to their support of our Launch Fishers High School Fellowship, they have proven their interest in helping our innovation economy continue to grow and thrive!” says John Wechsler, Founder of Launch Fishers. AT&T was once a startup. Alexander Graham Bell was inspired by his mother. In spite of the fact that she was deaf, she
became an accomplished pianist, inspiring young Alexander to take on great challenges throughout his life. The Bell Telephone Company filed for corporate status in July of 1877, 139 years ago. Alexander Graham Bell was an early entrepreneur whose love of invention started a company that is today the world’s largest global communications company. Bill Soards is technically President of Indiana Bell.
“Communications is continually disrupted - by devices, technologies - we are moving faster, smarter, trying newly innovated projects and ideas, and while I appreciate the nostalgia of the history of our company and industry, it is entirely based on change. That’s why we support new initiatives like Eleven Fifty Academy and Launch Fishers,” says Bill.

AT&T Brand Ambassador, Vanessa Cretsinger, works a few days a week inside of Launch Fishers where she coordinates vendor events and networks with members of Launch Fishers. “By learning about community entrepreneurs, we can explore what AT&T can do to help their businesses grow,” shares Vanessa. “When you align with a vision of technology and entrepreneurial innovation, good things happen,” says Bill, who is open to the happy coincidences of unintended results. Inspired by Launch Fishers, AT&T created their own co-working space for their employees. AT&T has owned the 220 Meridian location since 1907. “Having been with the company for over sixteen years, it means something to be back in your home town doing something special,” says Bill, who has moved around the country with AT&T, recently living in Denver before moving back to his home state.

"This isn't an AT&T store,” says Vanessa of working inside of Launch Fishers. The AT&T corporate-owned retail stores are known internally as CORE. “The intention is for Launch members to discover what AT&T does and for us to discover what they do and how we can work together,”

“Denver is a great city. We spent four and a half years there, but it’s made it even better to be home,” says Bill. “We can't be Austin, Boston, Denver - we need to be authentic to Indy.” Bill insists that every co-working space needs it’s own brand of authenticity, true to its local roots.

Magic and excitement will again permeate the air around Monument Circle during one of Central Indiana’s most treasured holiday traditions – the Circle of Lights®. Presented by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) #481, the 54th Circle of Lights® will kick off the holiday season, starting at 6 p.m. on Friday, November 25. The celebration will include acts from around Central Indiana, a performance from the cast of the 2016 Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s “IPL Yuletide Celebration” and a visit by the big guy himself – Santa Claus. The evening will culminate with the mesmerizing lights from the 284-foot Christmas tree on the ground while fireworks dazzle overhead. The show is set. Now onto the search for entertainment. Downtown Indy and members of IBEW #481 invite all entertainers, singers, musicians, dancers, choral groups and more to the Circle

in case you receive the invitation to return. The Alex, Jeffrey and Wilson Trio suggests going as far as having a third number ready. The trio did an exceptional job with the song, “Mary, Did You Know?” for their first audition. When they received the callback, the trio performed a fun number called “Santa Buddies,” a twist off the rendition of “Santa Babies.” With the final auditions complete, the judges announced the winners. The trio had indeed claimed a spot in the grand finale. Why the suggestion for a third number? ”We, as a bunch of teenagers, didn’t want to upstage Sandy Patti’s version of ‘Mary, Did You Know?’” said baritone Alex Milligan, supporting a mischievous smile. “We were all told to use familiar holiday songs for our stage performances. While ‘Santa Buddies’ was an exhilarating number, it wasn’t a familiar holiday song. We ended up singing, ‘The Christmas Song.’” Whether planning two songs or three, audition rules highly advise against singing a capella. Instead, performers bring a CD or an accompanist to the auditions. (A keyboard will be available for auditions.) How do performers choose between the two options? According to the 2015 gospel group Zions Joy!, they keep in mind factors such as the style of the song, the amount of pre-audition practice time and the feel you want to portray to your audience. Zions Joy! President Kay Insley clarified by saying, “If you're singing a big, uptempo song and don't have a full band backing you, it's probably best to sing with a CD. If an accompanist comes to every practice, live music is always a plus.” In closing, Insley humbly said, “The bottom line is that you should feel incredibly comfortable with your musical selection before your audition. You want to walk in feeling confident, prepared and ready to have fun. Whether or not you make it to the big stage, you are gaining experience and memories that will last a lifetime.”

When The Escape Room Fishers opens this fall in The Edge building at 8890 E. 116th St., guests can expect five totally new interactive escape room experiences. Brendon Harbron, co-owner and Chief Game Designer for The Escape Room, said the entrance of the new place will look similar to a shop or library. "The lounge will have a secret entrance that will look similar to an old-fashioned speakeasy door," Harbron said. "I think people are going to love it. It will have five brand new themed and unique escape rooms."

In 2015, Harbron and his wife, Jennifer, visited a similar venue in another state and had an incredible experience. Upon their return to Indiana, they began the process of opening an escape room in Indianapolis. During the process, they crossed paths with the Neals, and rather than becoming competitors, they sat down together and combined ideas to create The Escape Room Indianapolis. “We felt it would be a much better venue if we took all of our best ideas, put them together and created something better than either of us would have come up with on our own,” states Jennifer, co-owner and Corporate Event Planner. “We all bring different skill sets to the business and are extremely happy to be able to bring such an experience to our own grassroots Indiana." Several companies have booked The Escape Room Indianapolis during the week for new corporate team building retreats and outings. Schools have found it to be a new field trip experience. The students were able to share personal ideas on these topics with Todd and Eric as well as the Executive Director of the Board, Freedom Kolb. “This type of real world, hands-on experience complements the district’s HSE21 effort,” Freedom said. “Students have so much to contribute to the Foundation and to the community as both decision-makers and change agents. “I think the addition of students to the Board helps the community as a whole because what students contribute to the Board is unique,” Hamilton Southeastern High School Student Board member Olivia Kegley. “One of the reasons I love serving on the Board is because of the many other wonderful adults that we get to work with throughout the year. Everyone on the Board knows that we are all a part of something so much bigger than ourselves, and being able to represent our schools and our community in this way makes me very proud.”

THE EVENT DESIGN STUDIO: WHERE PINTEREST COMES TO LIFE Writer / Kara Kavensky Photography / Provided
Tonya Shadoan is an experienced event planner and owner of Circle City Planners and Circle City Designers. She predominantly does special occasion floral, event design and planning. “Anything that looks pretty, I do,” says Tonya. Wanting a shared space with other women entrepreneurs, Tonya opened The Event Design Studio this past January 1. Since moving to Fishers in 1995, Tonya imagined having a special place for women to gather and be creative among other women. “We recently started our summer Mom’s DIY Out every other Thursday evening,” shares Tonya. Past projects include sunflower wreaths and custom wine glasses. Other vendors in the space include: b.chic style hair extension expert, M.K. Anderson Custom Fine Art, Juli Feller Photography and CJ Sizemore with Trinity Hair Design. Tonya’s floral design is The French Tulip. “Tonya is amazing – she is a hard-working event planner and florist. She has a true creative spirit. Her floral arrangements are very artistic and gorgeous. I hired her to do the table decorations and flowers for my daughter’s graduation party, and it was a huge hit!” shares client Raina Fay. ”Everyone was asking who did my decorations, and I told them about Tonya and The French Tulip! I think it’s very important to support locally-owned business." “We have created a place where women feel beautiful from the inside out,” says Tonya. The Event Design Studio is located at 11523 Lantern Rd. in Fishers. BOOMBOZZ PIZZA TAPHOUSE'S WORLD CHAMPION PIZZA
9887 E. 116TH ST., FISHERS, IN 46037 | (317) 577-2699 | BOOMBOZZ.COM Writer / Matt Keating
BoomBozz Pizza in Fishers was attracting positive attention before it even opened on August 9. Brian Hall, the enthusiastic operating partner of BoomBozz Pizza Taphouse, also started the Carmel location in 2010 and believes the success of the Carmel spot helped ensure customers at the Fishers restaurant. "We didn't run an advertisement or have a website up, and we had a 45-minute wait on our first night," Hall said. He adheres to a recipe of success that helped him over the last several years. "I keep things real simple," Hall said during a tour of the kitchen. "We use fresh ingredients and hand cut and slice everything. We cook the meats from scratch. We marinate the chicken. We come in at 7 a.m. every day and get busy. The majority of items are fresh and never frozen. We work hard to make people good food." Attention to detail has paid off for Hall. He recently won the 2016 World Pizza Championship at The International Pizza Expo in Las Vegas.
"You go through different divisions, and we won each round," he explained. "I liked the non-traditional category, which means there are no rules. I love that, and it enabled us to win the title." He has won the 2016 World Pizza Championship twice and The American Pizza Championship twice. "I love doing things in a unique and fun way, and that has also helped me with BoomBozz." The name BoomBozz comes from Italian slang and means wild, crazy and fun. Hall, a former casino manager in Las Vegas and Indiana, said he has a passion for food. "I stress unique flavors with our Mediterranean and Fajita pizzas." Hall added that he also provides a good value at BoomBozz. "We give you a gourmet experience for less than $20, Hall said. “I tell people to bring the kids and spend less than $50." BoomBozz also offers $5 and $6 Social Hour values. The $5 Social Plates include BoomBozz's Famous Asiago Bread, Goat Cheese 46 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2016 / atFishers.com
Marinara, Soft Pretzels, Hummus, Stuffed Portobello, Loaded Potato Nachos, Toasted Ravioli and Bruschetta. The $6 Social Plate includes House Made "MeatBozz," Award Winning Wings and Southern Fried Boneless Bites. Daily drink specials are featured every Sunday through Thursday. "On Tuesdays, we feature a Craft beer for $2," Hall said. Beers on tap include a BoomBrew Collaboration Rotator, a Local Rotator, a Three Floyds Rotator, a Daredevil Lift Off, West Coast IPA, a Fountain Square Backyard Porter, a Tin Man Damascene, Apricot Sour, a Tin Man Rivet, Irish Red and a host of dozens of other drinks. "I go to other cities to keep up-to-date on current trends," Hall stated. "I'll go to New York City or Washington, D.C., to experience new flavors and bring that flavor back here." Matt Keating is an instructional assistant and tutor at Amy Beverland Elementary and a freelance writer. He has won three Society of Professional Journalists awards. He previously worked for The Indianapolis Star, NUVO Newsweekly, and MZD Public Relations.

INDY DUCT SPECIALISTS Indy Duct Specialists is run by longtime best friends, Justin Bauserman and Nick Winn, specializing in duct sealing. Most homeowners don’t think about how efficient their HVAC system is – only that it succeeds in blowing out hot air in the winter and cold air in the summer. Justin and Nick at Indy Ducts ensure that in-home HVAC systems are running at maximum capacity to help you save energy, and in turn, help you save money on your utility bills. Whether in basements, crawlspaces or attics, Justin and Nick’s duct sealing goes beyond what the builder of the home did in installing the HVAC system. Duct sealing helps to make sure the air that the HVAC system projects is not only clean, but not breaking the bank either. For more information on how Indy Duct Specialists can help improve the air quality in your home for a good price, visit indyductspecialists.com, email info@indyductspecialists.com or call 1-844-683-8287.
