YEAR REFLECTION
Writer / Tom Britt
While many of you will be heading off for spring break on April 1, my wife, Jeanne, and I will be toasting with a bottle of champagne to commemorate our 10year anniversary of the Geist Community Newsletter. It was 10 years ago this month that our four kids were huddled around the kitchen table assembling our first issue that was mailed out to just over 2,800 homeowners around Geist. We left for Hilton Head the following day on spring break and the rest was history. Today, we mail more than 11,000 copies here at Geist and have eight other publications around town for a combined 100,000 newsletters a month.
When we started, Jeanne was working part-time as a business manager for a local consulting firm. I was working at a local web design company downtown and had just landed a consulting gig with the world’s largest publishing company in Bloomington. Five years later, we were both fortunate enough to be able to focus all of our energy on what we loved: the Geist Community Newsletter. Since that time, we’ve seen exponential growth beyond anything we ever imagined. Call it the right place at the right time. Call it luck or just good oldfashioned hard work. We call it a blessing, and we are treasuring every moment. In this issue, we asked a sampling of people who have been so supportive over the last 10 years for their thoughts and reflections.
Some are longtime advertisers, writers, friends, family or, in most cases, all of the above. We also picked our “Top 10” cover stories (page 73) highlighting events, charities and news stories that helped put atGeist.com on the map. To everyone who has encouraged us and taken the time to call or write emails of appreciation, thank you! If you would be so kind, please go to our Facebook page (/atGeist) and post your top story, most memorable atGeist.com moment or favorite memory. We live in the best community in the world, and I’m proud of what we have built together over the last 10 years. Here’s a toast to you and a heartfelt thank-you. Just think of what will happen over the next 10 years.

PAM NEWELL THE ART OF THE MASTER Writer / Kara Reibel
The artistry behind the work of Pam Newell is simply artistic brilliance. Her paintings capture the essence of simple, beautiful objects and landscapes in a way that we see with our eyes, but seldom are able to capture with a photograph or to adequately describe with words. The teal blue teacup, peonies bursting from a vase, roses with their stems seen through a water-filled vase and a copper African kettle seem to be exactly as the eye remembers. The longer I stare at one of her still life paintings, the less I recall that it’s a painting and not the actual objects set before me. Modest, humble and gracious, Newell says that we live in an artistic vortex in Indiana. “There is so much talent here,” says Newell. “Hamilton County alone has a wealth of artists with incredible abilities.” Newell attended the University of Massachusetts where she studied two-dimensional design and art education. Being completely unfamiliar with the process of painting with oil and pastels, an informative lesson on the supplies was in order: “Pastel is very immediate and has gorgeous luminous color. It’s pure pigment,” explains Newell, “which is the same pigment in oil, only in pastel it’s held together with a binder.” The word pastel comes from the word paste — not a reference to light colors. Stretched canvas isn’t a preferred surface for Newell. She prefers linen as a painting surface, mostly glued to boards, smoothed and prepped for beautiful possibilities. A student of Newell’s, Julie McCullough, enrolled in Newell’s class at the Indianapolis Art Center. McCullough, who hadn’t touched her brushes since college, credits Newell for her heartfelt encouragement and instruction, leading her to a place that she hadn’t thought possible to go as a painter. “I believe we get caught up in everyday life and when things begin to calm down, we wish to reach for something within us. Pam has brought that out in me, and I can honestly say she has been one of the best mentors,” states McCullough. The praise for Newell is consistent from her students. “When you leave her workshop, you feel like she has elevated your self-confidence and you are ready to go home and try many of her suggestions,” says fellow student Audrey Fiet. Newell, who works from home along with her husband, Bruce, who occupies another office in their home, used mostly pastels when their children were young. “I could leave the pastel on the easel and come back to it later, and with little children, the interruptions were frequent,” says Newell. Once she had the luxury of longer, more focused time at her craft, she went back to mostly oils. “I have transitioned to about 70 percent oil paintings,” says Newell, “but I love both media, for different reasons.” Oil is an ideal medium for still lifes, which are the bulk of Newell’s work right now. On occasion, Newell, like other artists, will paint “en plein air.” This simply refers to painting outside in the elements. When Newell paints outside, she paints almost exclusively in oils, which are easier for her to set up. She indicated that the setup with pastels is heavier and she found that she spent a great amount of time looking in the grass for them. Newell donated two paintings to the Ambassador 10 / GEIST / APRIL 2014 / atGeist.com

House, both in pastel, and one was done en plein air on-site. As a member of several artists associations, such as the Indiana Artists Club founded by T.C. Steele and other notable artists in 1917, Brown County Art Guild, Hoosier Salon, Hamilton County Artists Association and Indiana Artisans, to name a few, Newell has gotten to know many amazing artists around the state. “What never ceases to amaze me is the deep pool of talent here,” says Newell. “We are all mutually respectful and supportive of one another.” When asked about plein air sites in Indiana, Newell responds, “There is beauty all around. You just need to know where to look. And sometimes it’s right outside your door, with the proper lighting. The only requirement is opening our eyes and our minds.” For further information about Newell, visit pnewellart.com.

ANNIVERSARY SPOTLIGHT
WRITER GAINS FRIENDS AND FAMILY THROUGH WORK ON ATGEIST By Anne E. O’Connor
Writer Andy Murphy is a big fan of atGeist. com. “I’ve written about so many wonderful people,” she said. The stories she has covered over the past 10 years for Tom and Jeanne Britt’s publications will stay with her forever. “I’m so proud of them, creating community newsletters that haven’t forgotten what people really want to read about,” she said. The insightful, uplifting stories cover people in the community. The newsletters, headed by a couple not afraid to take risks or make mistakes, are good for their communities, Murphy said.
One inspirational story on the Christmas lights at Reynolds Farm Equipment in Fishers remains part of Murphy’s life. The display on Highway 37 now has 1 million lights and supports a food pantry. It all began with one decorated tractor. Arline Reynolds was almost 95 years old and died soon after Murphy met her. “I wrote that story and she loved it,” Murphy said. “Now I’m doing a documentary about this wonderful holiday event.” Murphy, 71, worked in the corporate world and now writes books and runs Writestuff Writers, workshops and conferences for writers and other creative professionals.
Along the way, she writes for the Britts and previously served as managing editor. The work has been a learning experience. Crafting short pieces taught her to edit and “write better with less.” Another joy she finds through her work with atGeist.com is closer ties to the community. Murphy enjoys receiving immediate feedback from her readers. The Britts have become important to the writer and documentary maker. “Tom is like a son to me,” she said. “I never had a daughter, but if I had one, I’d want her to be just like Jeanne.”

MO FUN ON ST. PATRICK’S DAY Writer / Stacey Place
Even in the brisk March weather, the line flowed out the door for the sixth annual St. Patrick’s Day Bash at Mo’s Irish Pub. More than 5,000 green-clad partygoers enjoyed the festivities, which kicked off with an 8:30 a.m. 5K run March 15. In total, 190 runners participated in the race and then congregated in the pub for a traditional “Kegs and Eggs” breakfast. Throughout the day and late into the night, multiple bands rocked both the pub and a nearby tent. The pub featured musicians Jay Baker, Stella Luna, Through Being Cool and Poparazzi. Outside, The Bishops, Dave and Rae, and Recoil kept guests moving in their muddy dancing shoes. The green beer flowed steadily from the tap, and the party roared. “It’s the best party in Indiana for St. Patrick’s Day,” said Kyle Gobel, Mo’s assistant general manager. “People come here to have fun, drink good
beer and dance to great music.” St. Patrick’s Day at Mo’s has always attracted a spirited crowd, and this year families found a creative balloon artist and swag giveaways to accompany their corned beef and cabbage.
Mo’s Irish Pub was also the chosen venue for the unveiling of the “People’s Race Car,” a car sponsored by the locals of Indiana that’s attempting to race in the 2014 Indianapolis 500. No corporate funds sponsor the car. (Anyone can join CuttersRT and be an official sponsor of the Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing entry, starting for only $100; learn more at cuttersrt.com.) Mo’s has established a solid reputation for its St. Patty’s Day enthusiasm; however, owners hope to be known as the local establishment for celebrating any and all occasions. To help step it up, some exciting renovations are just around the corner. Plans are in place to build a second bar opening onto a patio with outdoor seating, fireplaces, a heated awning and TVs. Expect
a crowd on Wednesday nights at the end of May when Dave and Rae take the stage for a weekly gig. Mo’s will also once again make summertime fun more convenient by offering shuttle service to Klipsch Music Center for all concerts. Still, even with so many events throughout the year, Mo’s is best known for its elaborate St. Patty’s Day Bash, which grows in popularity each year. “This was the biggest and the baddest party yet, and next year, after the patio is completed, we expect it to be even better,” Gobel said. The Mo’s St. Patrick’s Day Bash is hosted once a year, and for most locals that is enough. But for those other occasions that deserve a celebratory toast, consider sharing it with friends at Mo’s Irish Pub, the place for “Mo” fun and “Mo” memories.

ou can draw a parallel between financial health and physical health. In the care of an experienced practitioner, better outcomes are likely. It is therefore telling that so many doctors and physicians have their portfolios with the advisors at Gagne Wealth Management Group. As Raymond James financial advisors, the motherand-son partnership focuses on providing the most appropriate financial advice to high-net-worth clients. Jay Gagne and mother Paula Gagne, senior financial advisor, apply nearly five decades of combined experience – and a partnership of 18 years – in building customized portfolios. “We have a philosophy,” says Jay Gagne, CIMA®, “that clients come to us with unique financial needs and it’s our job to create customized solutions.” This is something the partners are well prepared to do. The difference in their ages adds a depth to their understanding of the needs of their clients, who range from retired to just starting out. It merits mentioning that clients find the company by referral and are not Jay’s or Paula’s; they’re clients of the practice, benefiting from the perspectives of both. One strong emphasis is on education, Jay says. “When clients understand the investment solutions they have, and why they have them, they’re more likely to stay the course.”
“Clients come to us with unique financial needs and it’s our job to create customized solutions.” — Jay Gagne, CIMA®, president, Gagne Wealth Management Group
“We have deep relationships in this business,” he says. “My mom has clients that go back as long as she’s been in the industry. And I have clients going back my entire 18-year career.” Jay says one of his best business decisions was to earn his Certified Investment Management Analyst® certification from the Wharton School. He is able to evaluate investment products, decide which are suitable, and determine how they fit and interact in a client’s portfolio. “That was really a game changer. And I use it every day in my practice.”
The advisors at Gagne Wealth Management Group follow a model that treats individual clients as minipension funds, investing primarily in privately managed accounts and allocating assets guided by forward-looking research. Rebalancing is a key element in client service. Primarily fee-based, the advisors at Gagne Wealth Management Group are on the same side of the table as their clients and actively involved in the investment process. Accessibility is key. Jay and Paula give clients their cell phone numbers and invite them to call at any time. Transparency is also essential. “I will always tell a client why we’re doing what we’re doing, and what fees and costs are involved. I’m a big believer in full disclosure,” Jay says. “That prevents a client from being surprised later. Integrity is most important in our profession.” Jay also believes the group’s service staff, Kelly Hudson, senior client associate, and Amy McNeil, client associate, are two of the best in the industry. “Clients love them,” he says.

COPING WITH SPRING FLOODING “In those situations, timing is everything,” he said. “The sooner we can dry those out April showers may bring May flowers, but professionally, the better chance we can save they can also cause costly flooding problems them. The damage can get quite bad, quite for unsuspecting homeowners. quick.” Writer / Nathan Lamb
The warning signs of trouble include discolored walls and ceilings, water stains and “bubbling” of paint or drywall, said Jim Krueger, who is a manager with Moore Restoration. He advised prompt action for homes showing those symptoms, saying water damage isn’t the sort of problem that goes away by itself.
DRAINAGE IS KEY
Krueger said the most common cause of springtime interior flooding is sump pump failure. For those who aren’t familiar with sump pumps, they are commonly used to remove water from basements susceptible to flooding. The pumps are placed in a
collection basin called the sump, often with a mechanism that activates the pump when water reaches a specific level. While sump pumps play a direct role in removing water from homes, Krueger said proper maintenance of a property’s drainage system is a key preventive measure. He listed foliage as a common culprit for problems, saying gutters clogged with leaves often can’t perform the important task of channeling drain water away from a home’s foundation and basement.

tend to focus on visible problems, such as wet carpet, instead of the bigger picture.
“It can be a brutal wait if it fails,” Porter said. “If you don’t prepare, you’re pretty much at its mercy, waiting for the plumber to come and fix it.”
“The biggest thing I think we see are people who try do it themselves, and they don’t realize the extent of the damage,” he said. “It’s not so much what you can see, but what you can’t see that becomes the problem.”
PREVENT BASEMENT PROBLEMS
Josh Lee is a service manager for Schuler Plumbing Inc., and he said the most common sign of looming sump pump trouble is debris accumulating in the basin. He suggested a simple test homeowners could try before the rainy season. “It is important, especially if it doesn’t get a lot of use, to go down there, fill it up with water and make sure it works, before it’s too late,” he said. A variety of optional features are available for sump pump owners. Lee said home security companies now offer a service where homeowners can be notified digitally of pump activation or problems. He listed batteries as another common accessory that can keep things running for up to eight hours during a power outage. While it costs extra, Lee said it can make sense for some homeowners.
Jim Krueger with Moore Restoration lists foliage in gutters as a common culprit to springtime flooding.
“Water is pressure and if that water has nowhere to go and it’s blocked, it’s going to find somewhere to go,” said Krueger. “Having proper drainage and grading around your house is only going to help prevent these kind of situations.” James Porter from Bolden’s Cleaning and Restoration recommended that drainage systems propel water at least 10 feet away from the foundation. He advised homeowners with sump pumps to check them regularly, saying they typically last five to seven years and it’s a good idea to have a
“If you have a finished basement, it’s definitely cheaper than a flooded basement or an insurance claim,” he said. Sump pumps aside, Porter said it’s a good idea for the whole family to know where the water mains are, in case an emergency shutoff is needed. He said a common cause of spring plumbing failure is when a garden hose is left attached to a spigot over the winter, which can cause water to freeze in the spigot pipe, putting pressure on that system and potentially causing it to leak or even break. “If you are going out to use the garden hose for the first time and if it was plugged in from last fall, that’s a red flag,” he said.
AVOIDING MOLD
Once a plumber fixes a leak, the next step is often to call a water restoration contractor to assess and repair the damage. Krueger said a common mistake is that homeowners
“A rule of thumb in our industry is that wet will always go to dry,” continued Krueger, saying wet carpet can often lead to wet drywall, baseboards and studs inside the wall. “That’s the part most people don’t seem to think about,” said Krueger. “When those get wet, that’s when you have the likelihood of mold and mildew developing.” Airborne exposure to residential mold can aggravate asthma, hay fever and allergies, along with causing coughing, congestion, runny nose and eye irritation, according to the Indiana State Department of Health. “All molds need water to grow,” according to the ISDH mold website. “Mold can grow almost anywhere there is water damage, high humidity or dampness. Removing the source of moisture, such as through repairs or dehumidification, is critical to preventing mold growth.” Explaining how that process works, Porter said removing the water is often only the first step, saying fans and dehumidifiers are typically needed to restore the air quality. Krueger listed a “musty” smell as a sign of bacteria growth, saying that’s often an indicator of costly hidden problems. He said insurance can be helpful there, but he added that homeowners shouldn’t wait until there’s a problem to find out exactly what’s covered by their policy. “Understanding your insurance coverage is very important,” he said. “Most insurance policies do not cover sump pumps or drain backups without an additional coverage on your policy.” “It’s usually pretty inexpensive, but it’s well worth it,” Krueger added. “It’s usually pennies on the dollar, to be honest with you.”

WEATHER IS WARMING, TIME TO RUN More advanced runners might be ready for longer races. Right here in Geist is the St. Vincent Geist Half Marathon and 5K run at Geist Park on May 17, which raises funds for the local schools to “promote health and wellness.” The Carmel Marathon Weekend, held April 12, is a multi-race event, which includes a marathon (26.2 miles), a half marathon (13.1 miles), a marathon relay and an 8K (4.97-mile) race.
Writers / Christy Watson and Laura Isaacs
Now that the weather is warming up and days are getting longer, you might be ready to lace up your sneakers and run. And if you do, you’ll be in good company. There are more than 100 races and running events taking place across the Indianapolis area this spring and summer. With so many options, locations, courses and causes to support, how do you pick the race that is the best fit for you? No matter whether you’re interested in running for fun, to get in shape or to support your favorite charity, there’s likely a race for you on the season’s schedule, even if you’re just getting started with running.
Galloway is president of Indy Runners, a 1,000-member-strong club that promotes running, walking and healthy lifestyles in the Indianapolis area. He encourages new runners to slow down and break down big goals into smaller, more achievable increments. Jaime Smith, a trainer with Indianapolisarea YMCAs, agrees it’s important to ease into the sport. “The keys to a successful running or walking plan are to evaluate your current fitness level, set a realistic goal, start slow, and gradually add time and distance over the training period and continue to cross-train to prevent injuries,” Smith said.
Those looking to start small are in luck. According to Indy Runners’ Chris Galloway, Several events on the season’s race schedule it’s important that new runners ease gently include 1-mile “fun runs” and other shortinto the sport. distance events. The upcoming Spring Fling 5K and Fun Run on April 26 at the Primrose “If you’re a new runner, it might seem School of West Fishers lets participants impossible to go from zero to a marathon,” choose between a 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) Galloway said. “Take your time. Maybe start run or a 1-mile fun run, with all proceeds with a mile run, then a 5K, and then focus benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation. on beyond.”
In addition to running, new events have emerged in recent years to include other fitness challenges and extra fun. Sprint triathlons, a competition involving swimming, biking and running, have grown in popularity, as have adventure races, such as the Dirty Girl Mud Run (5K run, May 17) and the CityQuest Urban Adventure Fun Run (5K run, June 7). When adding a pink boa, a splash of neon paint or a funny team name, these type of races have become wildly popular and are a great motivator for various charities. Whatever your passion, whatever your cause, whatever your level of fitness ability is — put on those running shoes. Download a training app and crank up Pandora. Even if you aren’t a race-ready runner, it is important that you stay active and keep moving. “There’s a lot you can accomplish by running,” Galloway said. “You can make friends. You can get in shape. You can get your head straight.”

BOBBY “SLICK” LEONARD OUR HOOSIER HALL OF FAMER Perhaps the best description of Bobby “Slick” Leonard comes from someone who has evaluated the accomplishments of many Indiana basketball heroes and legends during his long career as a Hoosier State wordsmith.
Bill Benner, north of 60, has tangled with Bob Knight’s personality, described Reggie Miller’s exploits and now works with Larry Bird’s Pacers. But when asked how to best describe Leonard and the long-running basketball
Writer / Ray Compton Photographer / JJ Kaplan
episode that has played in Terre Haute, Bloomington and Indianapolis/Carmel for 75 years of his 82 years, perhaps Benner sums it best in seven words. “He is the personification of Indiana basketball,” Benner said.
atGeist.com / APRIL 2014 / GEIST / 25
Geist_0414.indd 25
3/26/14 8:01 PM
And it is hard to resist Benner’s declaration. Indeed, our state has hosted many basketball celebrities since we fell in love with the game. But, mostly, our fabled characters have come and gone through this crossroads of America: Miller, for instance, grew up in California and has returned to the West Coast. John Wooden was born in Martinsville and schooled in West Lafayette but reached greatness in Los Angeles. Oscar Robertson, born in Tennessee, starred
in Cincinnati. Even Bird of French Lick and Indiana State fame became a national name as a Boston Celtic. Thus, can anyone argue that Leonard—born in Terre Haute, educated in Bloomington, and a resident, coach and broadcaster in Indianapolis/ Carmel for almost five decades—is not the biggest Hoosier basketballer of them all? This full-blooded Hoosier seemingly epitomizes all of us in Indiana. So when Leonard ventures to Springfield, Mass., in August to join the storied Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, there will be more Hoosiers on board for the ceremony than his wife and basketball partner, Nancy, his family and Pacers executives. There will also be hundreds, thousands or maybe millions of us in spirit when one of ours accepts the next sainthood into the sport he cherishes. We will all be vicariously living the experience that Pacer executives enjoyed this winter when his finalist status for the hall of fame was announced. Recently, the Leonards sat in the living room of their Carmel home to take part in another of the countless interviews reviewing the chapters of their careers. Some questions were old. Some inquiries might have been new. Whatever was
asked, both amazed us with their ability to recall the highest of accomplishments and the smallest of trivia points related to being full-time Hoosiers.
The Slick from Terre Haute Okay, this saying is not as romantic as Zeke from Cabin Creek ( Jerry West) or the Hick from French Lick (Bird), but the nickname of Slick has been heard for a long time in Indiana and other basketball outposts. So, who invented Slick? It was not Dick Vitale or Digger Phelps. Instead, Slick was born during a bus trip the Los Angeles Lakers made through West Virginia for preseason games. Leonard was involved in a heated Hollywood Gin match with Coach George Mikan at the front of the bus. “I blitzed him,” Leonard recalled, “and one of the players said that I was too slick. It stuck.” Leonard’s love for cards-and winning for money-are part of his basketball folklore.
The first “BOOM BABY” It would be easy to theorize that the “BOOM BABY” blurted by Leonard for a Pacer 3-point basket was invented to label 3-pointers scored by Miller during his 18-year career with Indiana. After all, Leonard announced almost all of Miller’s games, and the 1987 draft pick drained 2,560 3-pointers. But that was not the case. “BOOM BABY” was hatched when Leonard was coaching the Pacers in the seventh game of the semi-finals of the 1975 American Basketball Association (ABA) playoffs. Denver held a 2-point lead with seconds left, and the Pacers got the ball to George McGinnis in the low post for a potential tying basket. But McGinnis kicked the ball out to a wide-open Billy Keller in the far corner. Game, set, Boom Baby. “Billy drilled it, and I shouted “BOOM BABY,” Leonard recalled.
And the biggest “BOOM BABY”? “It was at the Miracle in Madison Square Garden,” Leonard said. “Reggie scored eight points in 13 seconds. One, he was right in front of Spike Lee, and he backed up for a 3-pointer. He nailed. I have never seen anything like it.” Today, Miller’s company is called Boom Baby Productions.

BOBBY LEONARD BY THE NUMBERS IN HIGH SCHOOL

How about that red, white & blue basketball Along with having teams called the Anaheim Amigos, Minnesota Muskies and Pittsburgh Condors, the ABA was also known for using a red, white and blue basketball. Founders of the league thought the basketball was a sign of patriotism. It took Leonard time to accept the colorful basketball. “I was an old NBA player,” he said. “We didn’t have that kind of stuff.” Leonard also had to adjust to the 3-point shot. It, too, was an ABA rule and was scorned by the NBA…until Leonard led a charge to insert the “home run” into the league in 1979. “I told them that the fans in Boston and New York are no different than the fans in San Antonio, Denver and Indianapolis,” Leonard said. “Our fans loved it, and so will theirs.” There was only one dissenting vote in accepting the 3-point shot. It came from a longtime Leonard rival, Red Auerbach.
Slick vs. Red It is doubtful that Leonard and Auerbach ever exchanged Valentine’s Day cards. The rivalry between the two spilled over into the media and on-court. Even Nancy Leonard—who claims she and Auerbach had a respectful relationship—once challenged Auerbach when the Celtics came to Market Square Arena for the Pacers’ first NBA game in 1976. Nancy, in charge of game entertainment and activities, was visited by a referee during the game. The official said Auerbach was upset about the volume of the music and demanded that it be turned down. Nancy had a rulebook in her purse, showed it to the official and noted there was no rule on the loudness of music. After the official showed the rulebook to Auerbach, the Celtic coach slammed the book on the floor. Eventually, the Celtics rallied from double digits and won in overtime. “We were beating their butts,” Leonard said. “If not for [ John] Havlicek, we would have won.”
Champions vs. champions But while Leonard grudgingly concedes that Boston won that match, he is not ready to surrender that the Celtics of Larry Bird, Robert Parrish and Kevin McHale in the 1980s were better than his ABA championship teams in the 1970s, featuring Roger Brown, Mel Daniels and George McGinnis. “That frontline of ours could have competed with anybody,” the coach said. “Larry couldn’t have handled Roger, and there is no way Kevin could have guarded George. Plus, Mel would have been a big problem for Parrish.”
Those disagreements with the officials During his coaching days, Leonard won 529 games for the Pacers. And he guided the blue and gold to three NBA championships. But he was also known for some incredible outbursts when it came to referees, ball racks, timekeepers and others who stood in the way of his pursuit of success. Let’s review some of those moments: • The Ball Rack. Before Bob Knight fired a chair across the floor at an Indiana game in Bloomington, Leonard became upset with referee Ed Rush in a game at the State Fairgrounds Coliseum and tossed a full ball rack at Rush. Balls were flying everywhere, and Leonard earned three technical fouls. He also reported to the ABA office in New York the next day.
The number of dates that Leonard had during his four years at Terre Haute Gerstmeyer. Coach Howard Sharpe had three rules for his players: No smoking, no drinking, no girls. Thus, no dating. During his sophomore year, a girl asked Leonard’s mother if Bobby could attend a school dance with her. Mrs. Leonard agreed, but when the girl came to pickup Bobby, he hid under his bed and no one found him. End of date. “I didn’t know how to dance,” Leonard recalled. “I played basketball.”
LEONARD BY THE NUMBERS AT INDIANA UNIVERSITY
27
That’s how many seconds were left in the 1953 NCAA championship game between Indiana and Kansas. The scored was tied and Leonard was fouled on a layup attempt. The guilty Jayhawk was Dean Smith, who later became a coaching legend at North Carolina. Leonard missed his first attempt and Kansas coach Phog Allen called time out. “He was trying to freeze me out,” remembered Leonard. But after the time out, Leonard hit the second shot and the Hoosiers won the national championship.
13,000
As in $13,000 with the Zephers in his last season (1962-63). It was Leonard’s highest salary as an NBA starter. That came out to $158 per game. This year, Roy Hibbert will earn $14.3 million as the starting center for the Pacers. That comes out to $174,183 per game.

The number of years that Bobby coached the Pacers.
The number of years that Nancy officially was called the “assistant general manager” of the Pacers. However, previously to becoming a paid employee in 1976, she served numerous roles for the franchise, including creating the Pacemates (an extension of the Pacesetter hosts program), serving as a “mom” to the players and once driving Dancing Harry to a playoff game in Louisville. When attending NBA meetings, she was frequently the only woman in the room.

The total regular season wins the Pacers and Leonard had during their first ABA championship season (1969-70). They had a winning percentage of .702.
The final number of season tickets sold by the franchise for the 1977-78 season. Over 2,000 season tickets were sold during a two-day telethon on July 3-4. Nancy Leonard and her staff spearheaded the drive that saved the franchise and produced a season ticket total that still ranks as one of the highest in the history of the franchise. “Something like this can only have happened in Indiana,” Slick Leonard told the media after he and Nancy tearfully proclaimed success on live television.
529 60
The total number of coaching victories that Leonard achieved with the Pacers. The number hangs from a banner at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
The number of years that Nancy Root of South Bend and Bob Leonard of Terre Haute will have been married on June 15, 1954. The couple met in school at Bloomington. Their wedding was one day after their graduation ceremony from Indiana.

The Leonards convinced a developer to sell them two lots in a new Carmel neighborhood in 1969. The price was $8,100 per lot. Forty-five years later they still reside in the same five-bedroom home where a cabin once stood.
5
Okay, did you really think this basketball couple would have one, two or three children? They had to have a starting five and they did. All five of the Leonard children attended Carmel High School and the four boys (Bob, Tom, Bill and Tim) played a variety of sports. “We never pushed them into sports,” said Bobby.

Leonard was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame on the 14th day of February, 2014. It was Valentine’s Day.

• Th e Mormon Punt. Leonard remembers the passive following there was in Salt Lake City, a new franchise, when the Stars arrived. But it wasn’t quiet for long after Leonard turned the Salt Place into bedlam one night. After disagreeing with an official’s call, Leonard discovered the basketball at the free throw line and proceeded to imitate Pat MacAfee in punting the ball into the 50th row of the arena. From then on, Leonard recalls that

the enthusiasm at Utah home games was high. • The Slow Timekeeper. There was no need to rile up the fans in San Antonio, but Leonard did one time. During an ABA playoff game, the game was tied, and San Antonio had the ball and a chance to win the game. All broke loose when Leonard accused the timekeeper of having a slow trigger on starting the play clock. He

This time it was longtime official Wally Rooney who received Leonard’s wrath. After disagreeing with Rooney on a call, the Pacer coach grabbed Rooney’s whistle and took it with him. “You have to be a little bit nuts to coach,” he admitted.
The Best-Ever Team Almost 300 different players have worn the Pacer colors, and the roster has gone A to Z as in Abernethy to Zeno. So, if Bobby Leonard were to name his alltime Pacer starting lineup, whom would he select? “I’d have to have Reggie,” he assessed. “Got to have Reggie.” His next three players were selected in rapid-five: the trio of Mel Daniels, Roger Brown and George McGinnis. And the point guard? It came down to Mark Jackson and Freddie Lewis, another ABA legend. He paused and reflected. “Give me Freddie,” Leonard stated. “He was the ultimate floor leader.” As for a sixth man? “I’d bring Paul [George] off the bench as my sixth man,” he noted. “He has a chance to be one of the best.”

PRESCHOOL PRIMER: A GUIDE TO GEIST PRE-K PROGRAMS

Geist parents have a lot to consider when choosing a preschool for their child. With so many options available, finding the right program for your child can take a bit of work. But despite the differences in opinion when it comes to playtime versus academics, educators agree on one thing: It’s worth it. “Early learning experiences are essential for the social and cognitive development of young children,” said Abby Brown, early learning specialist at Indianapolis Public Library. “Daily opportunities to explore, imagine and play lay the foundation for later academic success.” With so much riding on a few crucial years of development, parents need to weigh their options when it comes to selecting a program for their child. While there’s no pre-eminent type of preschool, it is
important to find a program that matches your family’s needs and values, and your child’s learning style.
include religious values, while others like Montessori and cooperative programs follow a defined educational approach.
EXPLORE YOUR OPTIONS: PRESCHOOLS IN GEIST
According to Director Barbara Riddle, the Kids@Geist Preschool program at Geist Community Church follows the A Beka curriculum, which is based on academics and Christian character training. Her program includes both part-time and fulltime options to meet a variety of family needs. Riddle advises that parents seeking preschools look for a program with a “warm, inviting environment” and encourages parents to meet with directors before enrolling their children.
There are more than a dozen preschools in the Geist area, each offering its own take on early childhood education. Narrowing down options might seem overwhelming, but parents who know what to look for can find a program that fits their needs. “The best preschools offer learning environments that are child-focused and provide a wide variety of hands-on learning activities incorporating language, art, science and nature,” Brown said. When considering preschool options, Brown and other experts advise parents to think about the schedule, structure and type of program. Some programs
Riddle also stressed Kids@Geist’s small class size. Students get lots of interaction with instructors and are able to foster close relationships. Because of the small size, spots fill quickly, she said, and only a few openings remain for the coming fall semester.

OTHER PRESCHOOL OPTIONS IN GEIST INCLUDE: Learning Time Preschool, which offers full- and part-time programs that encourage children to “grow physically, emotionally, socially and cognitively.” Weekday Ministries at Geist Christian Church, which provides faith-based daycare, preschool, kindergarten and transitional kindergarten programs. Outlook Christian Church Preschool and Daycare, which also offers faith-based learning and care. Regardless of the preschool program you choose for your child, it’s important to know that you’re taking important steps toward overall academic success. Jessica Thomas, a kindergarten teacher in nearby Lebanon, stresses the importance of pre-K learning.
The Geist Orchard Cooperative Preschool offers another approach to pre-K education. Co-op Co-President Emily Jackson defines the program’s philosophy as “learning through play.” What sets the GOCP apart, though, is the high level of parent involvement. “Parents assist the teacher in the classroom on a rotating schedule, so not only does the curriculum encourage growth, but every parent who participates brings unique personalities and life experiences that help the children grow and relate to the world in which they live,” Jackson said. “GOCP’s families form a community that benefits the children and the parents and often leads to long-lasting relationships.” Jackson got involved with the program in 2009 when her oldest soon enrolled in preschool. She now has a second child enrolled in the co-op. Benefits of the program, she said, include low adult-to-
child ratios and small class sizes. Classes have a cap of 15 students and are separated by age group. GOCP has three classes for 2-year-olds, 3-year-olds and 4-year-olds.
“We can always tell which kids have been to preschool,” Thomas said. “They know some letters, numbers and shapes and have practiced sharing or working with other kids. They know how to sit and listen, follow a schedule, follow rules, etc. Again, they may not be great at these things, but at least they’ve had exposure and practice.”
“Each class has its own curriculum with play-based activities for large and small motor skills, science, writing and math, and there is always free choice playtime,” Jackson said. The Geist Montessori Academy follows a unique curriculum style developed by pediatrician and psychiatrist Maria Montessori. According to information from the American Montessori Society, this approach can be defined as child-led learning. Teachers serve as guides and help encourage student independence. The typical preschool curriculum might include sensory awareness and cultural awareness, in addition to basic language, counting and geometry skills.

Staples says that atGeist.com has opened many doors for her business simply by connecting her to so many people and businesses. “A large percentage of atGeist.com shoots have turned into new clients for Brenda Staples Photography,” she said.
Although she’s thankful for the touching experiences and clients she’s gained by working with atGeist.com, Staples is perhaps most appreciative of what she’s gained in terms of her friendship with Britt; his wife, Jeanne; and the rest of his clan.
Staples has photographed dozens of features for Britt and atGeist. com over the years, shooting everything from food to landscapes to people. Many of these shoots stand out in Staples’ memory, but one particular job took her breath away. In April 2010, Staples photographed Luke Andritsch, a 6-year-old at the time who was battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and his remarkable family.
“Tom really is like a brother,” Staples said. “Jeanne and I are from small towns out West that are relatively close, so I knew immediately that we would get along. I am looking forward to the new memories we will soon share, as I will be photographing their daughter’s wedding this summer!”

DON’T TOUCH THAT DIAL! Your favorite TV meteorologist hails from Lawrence Writer / Neal G. Moore . Photographer / Brenda Staples
Maybe it was the stick-on weather map Pamela Gardner’s mom gave her when she was in middle school. Perhaps it was because as a kid growing up in Lawrence Township, Pam was terrified of storms. Or, maybe Mother Nature and Old Man Winter conspired to make it happen. Whatever the reason, Gardner said that she knew early on something involving the weather was in her long-range forecast. “I didn’t understand storms – and I wanted to,” said Gardner, a Forecast 8 Meteorologist with WISH-TV in Indianapolis. “So, I checked out library books and studied tornadoes on my own. I would write out mock forecasts, and I tried to train myself on maps. It was fascinating, and I was obsessed.” That weather obsession led Pam to Ball State University where she majored in telecommunications, with a meteorology minor. It was mom who suggested Pam should do the weather on TV and, just like that, a career was born. “She’s my biggest supporter, and I trust her. Who better to trust than your mom?” Pam smiled. She subsequently earned a broadcast meteorology certificate from Mississippi State University. But hold on. We’ve gotten ahead of ourselves with this story. Before Ball State and the TV weather career, there was Cat’s Eye. “Oh, wow! You were big-league [doing that],” Gardner said, fondly remembering broadcasting high school announcements as the Cat’s Eye anchor on Lawrence North’s campus TV system. “My senior year I needed an elective, and when I got ahold of a camera – and then in front of one – I loved it,” said Gardner, emphasizing that communications teacher Theresa Mowack was very encouraging. “It was the first time I got a taste of TV. She would say, ‘Try this, try that.’” Two days before graduating Ball State, Gardner was hired by WTHI in Terre Haute as a weathercaster. There were some “growing pains” along the way. “I replaced a guy who was there for several years, so when I came along I got a lot of rude viewer comments,” Pam recalled. “But, once I had proven myself, people completely turned around and supported me. I still get Terre Haute emails saying, ‘We miss you’ from supportive women. Most of the negative comments had been from women – and it’s a shame. Now, women are saying, ‘Hey – girl power! That’s great, you’re a scientist on TV,’ and that’s what I want to be considered as, because that’s what I am – the station scientist.” It’s a sentiment shared by WISH News Director Steve Bray. “Pamela has the ability to take the science of meteorology and break it down into a casual conversation with the information viewers need to know,” he said. atGeist.com / APRIL 2014 / GEIST / 35

3/26/14 8:01 PM
In 2011 Gardner joined WISH to anchor weekend weathercasts. On weekdays she produces computer weather graphics for fellow meteorologist Randy Ollis (also a Lawrence Township resident.) Then there’s the occasional weather story to be covered for newscasts, shooting video or handling rushhour traffic updates including reports from the news helicopter – a Jill of all trades, if you will. “Opportunities for women are exactly the same now – the playing field is even,” noted Gardner. “Gender has been largely removed and everyone has a fair chance [in TV]. It’s the education that matters.” Weather forecasting and reporting is serious business, as evidenced by last year’s November 17th tornado outbreak across north central Indiana. “That day we were upgraded to high risk by the National Weather Service,” remembered Gardner, adding that such a designation is quite rare. “We had a game plan and were very prepared. I was in charge of social media. We had great chemistry – just a very ‘on’ day.” News director Bray – who also is a meteorologist – appreciates the value of skilled

on-air personalities who know what they’re talking about. “Weather impacts everyone’s life, and Pam has the desire to let everyone know exactly what to expect when you head out the door, or to keep your family safe,” he said. Ask Pam what her most embarrassing onair slip-ups have been and she’ll cite the rare occasion when she’s butchered the name of a small Indiana town – a forgiveable offense, to be sure. This is Indiana, after all, where Vevay is pronounced “Veevee,” and Versailles is pronounced “Versales.” Go figure.
Customized investment portfolios that perform.
Since joining WISH, Gardner, her husband Nick and their dog Champ have, Champ have resided in Lawrence – not far from her childhood home. Pam said choosing to live in Lawrence was a no-brainer. “Everything just fell into place here. We have a beautiful home. There are plenty of parks to take the dog. We just got fishing poles and plan to do some fishing this summer.” For the aspiring TV personality, Gardner suggests getting involved in the business as soon as possible with a job shadow or internship. “It’s very, very competitive. Don’t expect to make big money, or to be at CNN right off the bat,” she said. There’s a professional ladder to be climbed with steps that require perseverance, talent and a little luck too. Oh, and keep an eye open for one of those stick-on weather maps.

PROPERTY PROS LAND MANAGEMENT MAKING A SLICE OF HEAVEN HOME Writer / Ann McWilliams
Although Property Pros Land Management got its start just three years ago, this Geistarea business has rapidly become one of the most trusted and well-known outdoor maintenance companies servicing the northeast side of Indianapolis. But that didn’t happen overnight.
Co-owners Josh Springer and Jeff Harvey both got their start in the outdoor industry years ago at a very early age. Growing up with those work experiences helped them develop a mutual love of working outdoors. That common interest eventually led to their meeting at Indiana University. While Harvey concentrated on his degree in business and Springer in entrepreneurship, they both picked up a job at Nolan’s, a local

landscaping company. After a few years of working side by side, they noticed a great work synergy. With their compatibility and history, they decided to join forces after graduation. That brought them back to the Indianapolis area, and in September 2009, Property Pros Land Management was born. They hit the ground running, and the passion they poured into their commercial and property management company paid off. They keep their message simple, offering a concentration in four core areas: a landscape architecture and design division that handles the design and installation of plants, mulch and hardscapes; a maintenance division that keeps properties fresh all season through pruning weeding, fertilization, aeration and seeding; and a mowing division, servicing both commercial and residential clients on a weekly basis.
“We started the company at the beginning of the recession and in a very competitive industry, but we’ve still capitalized,” says Springer. We owe a lot of our success to tenaciously employing our companywide mantra, which is to value the quality of our customer’s experience.” “Half of our job is delivering the service, but we see building authentic and enduring relationships as equally important,” states Harvey. Over the years, many of our customers have become friends. It’s a priceless payoff and a great feeling when we can create those connections.” “It’s never lost on us that we are charged with the duty of helping our customers realize the dream they have for their home and surroundings,” adds Springer. We treat our customer’s property with the same pride that we would have in caring for our own. We take personal and professional
ownership in each job we perform. We take it to heart.” This has not gone unnoticed as customers have sung their praises with high levels of loyalty and accolades, making them an A-rated service provider on Angie’s List and the recipient of multiple service awards. Both Springer and Harvey see their home base, Geist, as one of the best hidden secrets in Indiana. “We’re not going anywhere,” says Harvey. “We have our roots in the area and want to enhance its beauty for years to come.” Springer added, “This is home for us.” Property Pros Land Management is located at 11691 Fall Creek Road, Suite 204, in Indianapolis. GEIST JAZZERCIZE REFLECTS ON A 10-YEAR ADVERTISING PARTNERSHIP Writer / Kelly Bilodeau
In 2014, atGeist.com isn’t the only company celebrating its 10th anniversary. Geist Jazzercise also marked that milestone this year, and owner Heidi Tumbarello says she’s relied on atGeist.com since the beginning to help make her fitness center a familiar name among locals.
The ads she’s placed in the Geist Community Newsletter over the past decade have given her business consistent exposure. The newsletter has become a fixture in the community, much like publisher Tom Britt. “Tom is super visible; he’s always out and about in the community. He’s engaged in the community and a promoter of the community,” said Tumbarello.
“Personally, I love atGeist.com. I can read what’s going on. Placing an ad doesn’t require
any work on her part, said Tumbarello. “Tom pretty much does everything for me. He emails me. I send him a link to our corporate website, and he puts the ad together. It really can’t get any easier,” she said. “I’m looking forward to many more years of collaboration,” says Tumbarello.

REALTOR SUPPORTS LOCAL NEWS FROM GROUND FLOOR Writer / Nathan Lamb
Stories come and go in the news business, but Realtor Marie Ippolito has been a constant within the pages of Geist Community Newsletter since its inception. Ippolito bought an advertisement in the newsletter’s first issue 10 years ago, and it has been running ever since. She listed several reasons for the long-standing relationship, saying local news is important and she was confident publisher Tom Britt would produce a quality newsletter. “When I got an email from Tom saying what he wanted to do, I called him right away and told him I’d be with him from
the very first newsletter,” she said. “I knew the value of something like this — he was focusing on the area where I lived and it just seemed like a perfect match.” A broker and vice president for the F.C. Tucker Co., Ippolito has lived in the area for roughly 25 years — long enough to remember when the community was without a dedicated source for local news. She credited the newsletter for filling a key niche: providing a close-up look at what’s happening in the community, covering everything from new businesses to student accomplishments in the schools.
she said. “I enjoy reading it when I get it, because it has interesting stories.” From a marketing standpoint, Ippolito said her consistent presence in the newsletter helps with name recognition, saying that can be important in a marketplace where the average person relocates only once every seven or eight years.
“This is my philosophy on advertising: Advertising is like planting seeds in a garden. Sometimes they will grow and germinate immediately. Other times it may take a few years for the seeds to germinate, and sometimes they don’t at all,” she said. “All of the marketing research I’ve seen says “Tom has done a wonderful job branding the newsletter and keeping the quality high,” that you need to have some consistency.” 42 / GEIST / APRIL 2014 / atGeist.com

GROWING UP IN A FAMILY BUSINESS Writer / Nancy Kennedy
As the daughter of Geist Community Newsletter publisher Tom Britt and his wife, Jeanne, Stefanie Turk remembers the very first issue of the newsletter. “I was about 14 when my stepdad announced, ‘I have this great idea!’ and then all of us sitting around a table helping to put out the first issue,” she said. “I think we stapled pieces of paper together — it certainly wasn’t a magazine at the time like it is now. But from the start, the concept has always been community-focused.” She laughed as she talked about having parents so well-known and connected in the Geist Reservoir community.
“My dad knows everybody, and whenever we go out to dinner, it never fails — people would stop and talk to him. He’s such a people person and such a caring person, and it’s been cool to see all his involvement. It’s totally his element.” Turk added that while her dad is the face of the now-nine monthly magazines around town, he’s only half the business. Her mom is the other, behind-the-scenes business half. “I’m very proud of both of them,” she said. “My siblings and I have seen firsthand how tirelessly they work, pretty much every day of the week.”
Turk, who works in marketing and owns her own photography business, said her hands-on involvement with the newsletter over the years, taking photos for stories and helping her mom in the business office, plus just observing the hard work it takes to be successful, has been an invaluable education for her own career. “I’ve learned so much about so many things, and I’ve been inspired a lot by what I’ve grown up around,” she said. “I’ve watched this thing that they’ve created grow and grow and prosper and the pace they keep and how they keep reaching out to new people. It’s really impressive and definitely admirable.”

MASSAGING BOOM
MASSAGE THERAPY IS ONE OF THE HOTTEST PROFESSIONS IN THE MIDWEST Writer / Anne E. O’Connor
There are so many openings for certified professionals that “the demand is not getting met at this point,” said Marsha Thompson. The program chair of massage therapy at Harrison College at the Indianapolis East Campus has seen the demand skyrocket since she completed her training in 1998. Then, most practitioners would start out very small, perhaps with an unused room in a beauty parlor. “It was very hard to build up a clientele,” she said. “It’s just grown unbelievable.” Massage treatments can improve many conditions. “When people are having more aches and pains and are looking for a more holistic way of dealing with these issues, massage is an obvious answer,” said Charlie Marsh, regional developer for Indiana for Massage Envy. Thompson credits the growth in popularity to the professional certification standards that went into effect in Indiana in 2009. The Indiana Professional Licensing Agency grants certificates through a board of massage therapy. “That really made it more accepted by the general public as a legitimate profession,” she said. Two proposed legislative bills would upgrade the certification to a license. “Anybody can do massage, as long as they are not called a massage therapist,” she said. What the proposed legislation would do is “define the scope of practice and protect it.” Harrison College offers two paths to become a massage therapist. Earning an Associate of Applied Science in Therapeutic and Clinical Massage, requires an investment of 1,240 hours of study and costs about $44,000.
Marsha Thompson, Massage Therapy Program Chair at Harrison College.
Earning a Therapeutic Massage Practitioner certificate takes 760 hours of study at a cost of $26,000. Scholarship and financial aid packets are available through the college, formerly the Indiana Business College. Earning a degree gives students an opportunity to learn a specialty such as sports massage and to take general education and business courses. Both the certificate and degree programs give students the training time needed to obtain a state certification. Successful students come from all walks of life. “It’s very difficult to nail down who the
typical student is,” Thompson said. “They want a career they can feel good about.” Many are career-changers or retirees. Most plan on practicing part time. Some graduates remain at their previous jobs and do massage as a sideline. Successful students tend to have the soft skills needed to become a successful therapist. The job demands empathy, good verbal and nonverbal communication skills, and physical stamina. According to statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Labor, employment for massage therapists will grow 23 percent between 2012 and 2022, much faster than average.

SPARKLING WINES
Massage Envy, the biggest chain of spas in Indiana, is one of the largest employers of recent graduates. The business, which began in Arizona, is projected to grow, Thompson said. The college offers lifetime job placement for graduates and keeps in close touch with the management of the chain. Despite a program with 70 students in the day and night programs, jobs remain unfilled. In February, a message on the Indianapolis site for Massage Envy said, “We are now hiring Certified Massage Therapists at all 12 Indianapolis clinics!” The clinics are open seven days a week and focus on being affordable, convenient and professional, Marsh said. All of the massage therapists at Massage Envy are certified. The college program offers Hoosiers an unexpected benefit: Interns who have completed the massage therapy coursework give massages at a discounted rate at the spa on the east campus. THE NEED FOR SPEED Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger
Nearly 6,000 miles from Sochi and back home again in Indiana, Geist resident David Cripps’ thoughts race back to the icy track that was his life for months. As I meet Cripps, the chief mechanical engineer for the USA Olympic bobsled team, I am immediately enamored with the collection of Ralph Lauren Olympic wear neatly arranged on a decorator chair. He leads with a description of how the USA team was trained in Munich how to wear all the items, from the famous red, white and blue sweater to the hat and boots. Cripps has just returned to his home after a four-month absence in pursuit of the first medal the USA Olympic bobsled team has seen in 62 years. Thanks to bronze medalist Steve Holcomb, the bobsled team got the job done. But the story of the end of the medal drought will soon be forgotten. It’s the story of the journey to the games that Cripps never imagined in his wildest dreams and one that’s unforgettable.
With a degree in mechanical engineering and nearly 25 years in Indy Car racing, it’s a safe bet to say Cripps knows a thing or two about what it takes to make a race car go faster and smarter. When BMW, the sponsor of the Olympic bobsled team, came knocking to find an expert to help solve the bobsled design issues, Cripps answered. “I knew Indy Car. I really didn’t follow bobsled racing. I had barely watched or paid attention to it. But I figured I knew enough about racing, and I’m always up for a new challenge,” Cripps says. Growing up in England not far from the renowned Silverstone Circuit Runway in Northamptonshire, he began fueling his need for speed starting at about age 12 or 13 racing motorcycles. “You don’t grow up there and not feel it in your veins,” Cripps explains. He began racing motocross when he quickly realized his chances of learning how to make the machines run faster were greater than actually winning the races himself. “I knew right then that I wanted to have a career in mechanical engineering,” Cripps says. So the master of speed pursued it. Starting with a job with the British
Ministry of Defense, Cripps worked on a multitude of mechanical projects ranging from the mundane to fighter jets for the Royal Air Force. Cripps’ career quickly landed him in the mecca of racing, Indianapolis. It seemed he’d fulfilled his dream. Having worked with a number of Indy Car racing teams, Cripps easily fell into a lifestyle that included travel weekend after weekend all over the globe. His wife, Joy, admits, “He was traveling all over when I first met him. It was just a way of life. I knew what he was getting into.” Although through the years the couple and their children have juggled Cripps’ travel schedule and become accustomed to weekend absences, neither of the Cripps had any idea what they would be getting into next. In early 2013, after some disappointing races with bobsled prototypes, BMW approached Cripps. With the help of digital telemetry capable of detecting fast spots, slow spots and track degradation,

amusing, Thanksgiving for David. “We were training in Calgary and racing in the North American Cup. We’d just won a race that day, so to celebrate, we all went out to eat at Denny’s,” David says. As I chuckle heartily at the thought of the Thanksgiving Grand Slam meal and apparent new Breakfast of Champions, David reaches over to show me a photo of teammates at the restaurant, including one of Johnny Quinn (pre-bathroom door hole incident). Joy admits, “The story is much funnier now in person than it was over the phone.”
the speed and design issues were solved. By July 2013, the improved sleds went into production. “Then the next thing you know, we’re talking passports, and I’ve got my credentials,” Cripps recalls. But the road to Sochi was long. Cripps left Indy and his family in October 2013 not to return until after the conclusion of the Olympic Games. First up was Calgary, Alberta, Canada, for training and the North American Cup. “We all lived together in a big house, like a frat house. We cooked together and worked on sleds in the garage of the house. Athletes Kaillie Humphries, of the Canadian bobsled team, made us chili, and Lauren Williams, of the USA bobsled team, baked us cookies,” Cripps says. Back home in Indiana, his absence was felt. “I was used to weekend trips, but four months was a long haul,” Joy adds. The absence meant missed sports activities, family time and, most of all, the holidays. “The kids and I had a very quiet Thanksgiving without him,” Joy says. But it was an equally awkward, if not
The family met up at their beach home in Key West, Fla., to celebrate Christmas. But after that, their lives consisted of Skype, Twitter, email and phone calls when they could squeeze them in according to the time difference.
Thanks to digital technology, Joy and the kids did their best to live the experience vicariously through David. But nothing Heating • Air Conditioning • Indoor Air Quality over the wires could convey the magnitude of Sochi. “I’ve been to race after race in Indy Car, walked through Gasoline Alley, peered up at the crowd of thousands. The www.ActionAirFishers.com

Indy 500 is a huge experience. But walking into that stadium was absolutely incredible. The stadium was huge, the light show fantastic,” Cripps says. As exhilarating as all that was, Cripps explains, “It’s a totally different world than racing cars. It was a tremendous workload and I’ve never worked harder. In Indy Car, I work on one problem at a time. With the bobsled, we’re working on larger systems and at a much greater pace.” But the engineers weren’t the only ones working hard. Cripps says, “Unlike Indy Car where you have all day to do practice runs on the track, the athletes work out all day long, sometimes using a mobile gym, but they have just two practice runs a day. It takes incredible strength to handle a bobsled, and the men and women alike have to be at peak fitness.” After all of that, Cripps says he’s not sure if he’ll do another Olympiad, but he might. At this point, he has several offers in the Indy Car circuit. Some in the bobsled family became interested in Indy Car. Cripps explains, “I don’t know if any of them will cross over to the sport the way I did, but you can bet there will be bobsled people at the race. I’m looking forward to welcoming them into my house.”

ANNIVERSARY SPOTLIGHT
LOCAL RESTAURANT HAS THRIVED WITH HELP FROM THE BRITTS Writer / Susan Hershey
Bella Vita Ristorante, a thriving restaurant with plenty of outside seating in the summertime, music concerts and open air bars, has been at its present location for 10 years and opened the year Tom and Jeanne Britt started the Geist Community Newsletter. Shelley Najem, owner of the restaurant, said in a phone interview that her years of advertising with Britt have made a world of difference to her business. Over the years Tom has been the master of ceremonies at community fundraisers and supported the community with his newsletter. Najem said she’s been a loyal advertiser and become good friends with the Britts. “Tom does a lot for the community by letting people know when new businesses open. He publishes elegant articles when we do a remodeling, when we offer special offers and when we have a new beer, and he lets people know what’s going on in the community as well. We’ve been in the catering business for 20 years and 15 years as a restaurant, and we prefer to use the newsletter for advertising
rather than radio or television. It is the most effective and most inexpensive way to advertise.” In her years at this location, Najem has seen what used to be cornfields turned into thriving businesses, and the Geist Community Newsletter has played a big part in this economic upturn.

REPUTATION AND QUALITY ARE IMPORTANT FOR SHANE’S Writer / Debra Legg
Shane’s Outdoor Living & Landscape owner Rob Delaby was willing to advertise in the Geist Community Newsletter from the beginning because of publisher Tom Britt’s reputation. “Tom is held in high regard in the community, and people know him,” Delaby said. “That’s one reason the publication has been so successful.” He continues to advertise regularly because of the results he sees in lead generation and because buying an ad in the Geist Community Newsletter isn’t about just
exchanging money for a certain amount of space. “For them, the relationship is about more than advertising dollars,” Delaby said. “They’ve taken great pride and care in helping my business grow.” Shane’s current “Transformations” ad campaign in the newsletter has been one of the company’s most successful promotions. Each ad features a homeowner and before and after photos of a project Shane’s has successfully completed. “It’s given people a firsthand look at the shock and awe of what we can do,” Delaby said.
It also lets potential customers hear from real people, in their own community, about the caliber of the work they can expect from Shane’s. After a few times seeing the ad on the back of the Geist Community Newsletter, Delaby says the position has the power of a direct mailer — Shane’s is planted in people’s minds as the contractor to call for anything from patios to ponds to arbors and outdoor kitchens. Delaby says he’s selective about where he advertises, because he is conscious of the need to protect his firm’s brand. “Tom always delivers the kind of quality that I’m proud to be associated with,” he said.

2014 GEIST RESERVOIR AQUATIC PLANT MANAGEMENT TREATMENT PROGRAM There has been a tremendous amount of support for this year’s Aquatic Plant Management Program! Thanks to all who have already donated. We especially thank those who have donated more than their share, as they clearly understand it is for the betterment of the reservoir as a whole! Special thanks to all the “Neighborhood Coordinators” around the reservoir who have championed the cause, it could not have been accomplished without your help!! With the Geist Lake Coalition (GLC) working directly with all the agencies involved on behalf of Geist homeowners to ensure the best possible results, the GLC’s treatment program is truly unique, and is 100% volunteer coordinated! Special pricing for our large contracted volume makes it the best program available by far. Coincidently, others now say they will match our special pricing, although they really don’t come close to matching our program overall!! Other applicators do not fill gaps in areas where little or no donations originate or rebate back to Geist Reservoir for other water quality initiatives like the GLC does. Our program treats common areas or undeveloped areas of the reservoir and overages are paid from the GLC’s own funds! The GLC is a 501c3, not-for-profit, which may provide possible tax, (please confirm with your tax preparer or accountant for deductibility) advantages. If you see your area on the treatment map and have not donated yet, please do, this is a costly program and it is unfair to ride on the proverbial coattails of others and their donations. Even though the early treatment deadline has passed, there is still an opportunity to get on board with the next round permit application, so please contact a GLC coordinator or myself for treatment. Again, thanks to all those who have already donated to the effort. For more information, please check our website: GeistLake.org, follow us on Twitter: @Geist Coalition, and friend us on Facebook: Geist Lake Coalition. Please thank all the coordinators as they’ve worked hard to make this program possible, while simultaneously preparing for Blast on the Bridge at Geist. We still need volunteers for not only the Blast, but for Geist Cleanup days and other initiatives reservoir wide. We encourage all homeowners to get involved! Please make donation checks payable to: Geist Lake Coalition and mail to PO Box 103, Fishers, IN 46038 Sincerely, Brian Hall President Geist Lake Coalition Brian Hall, GLC Board Member & Coordinator for Reservoir Wide Treatment Operations BHall@ReproGraphix.com Ed Villanyi, GLC Board Member & Treatment Coordinator for Geist Reservoir’s Northeastern Hamilton County Side Villanyi@comcast.net Scott Rodgers, GLC Board Member & Treatment Coordinator for Geist Reservoir’s Northwestern Hamilton County Side Scott@ScottR.com Dave Irish, GLC Board Member & Treatment Coordinator for Geist Reservoir’s Southeastern Marion County Side DIrish@Leach-RussellMech.com Matt Huffine, GLC Board Member & Treatment Coordinator Geist Reservoir’s Southwestern Marion County Side Matt.Huffine@RoyalTitle.com

BOB TOLLINI, FROM MENTOR TO FRIEND Writer / Laura Isaacs
Even in today’s rapidly changing world, one thing holds true: You’ll find atGeist.com publisher Tom Britt and his good friend Bob Tollini at Mama Bear’s in Fishers on Thursday mornings. At first glance, Britt and Tollini might seem like an unlikely pair. Tollini is a generation removed from Britt, holds advanced degrees and has decades of experience in the business world. The two men met almost 10 years ago during the Heartland Film Festival, where Tollini was working
as a consultant and Britt was a volunteer. Their paths crossed again shortly after their initial meeting, when Britt was working on the Geist Harbor directory and Tollini was president of the homeowners’ association. In the years since, the men have consistently worked together on a variety of projects. Tollini has offered Britt guidance and assistance on everything from atGeist.com to the Geist Half Marathon and everything between. According to Tollini, one reason Britt has been so successful in his endeavors is his
networking ability. He said his friend loves meeting new people and connecting them with others. “He’s a constant networker. Tom is always meeting new people,” Tollini said. “He’s always using his connections to help people out. He’s really a good guy to know.” Over the years, Britt has come to think of Tollini as a mentor — but Tollini disagrees. “We’re equals,” he said with a laugh.

By Tom Britt Tom@atGeist.com My, how things have changed in the last month. Just as Geist residents in Marion County were celebrating the end of duck hunting on the reservoir, a press conference on November 17th at the Fishers Town Hall put the Hamilton County residents on their own offensive. As most of you have heard, the Fishers Town Council, led by Scott Faultless, announced their plans to annex over 2,050 homes on and around Geist Reservoir into the Town of Fishers. Property taxes would increase approximately 14% for the affected homeowners which results in a $600 per year increase for every $250,000 of value in their homes. Residents reacted, and reacted quickly to organize and fight the Continued on page 3

At a recent Lawrence Chamber of Commerce breakfast, Chris Burd was called up to receive a plaque for the new Burd Ford facility that just opened on Pendleton Pike. I overheard someone lean over and whisper, “Burd’s the word.”
Childhood sweethearts, Chris and Rich Burd grew up on the northeast side of Indianapolis. Chris was only 14 years old when she met her brother’s best friend, Rich. Four years later, they were married while Chris attended Butler University and Rich was back from Ball State University. “We had a home off of Buckingham down by Butler University for seven years,” recalled Chris who was majoring in radio and television. “They kicked me out of the program,” she chuckled. “They told me I didn’t have a voice for radio so I need to find another major.” (Continued on Page 3)

A phone call from a neighbor in Fox Hollow tipped us off about a 3-year-old boy named Luke battling leukemia. That phone call led to a story, a family and a cause that our community has fully embraced called Team Luke. He’s now 10 years old and in remission and can been seen monthly at Riley Children’s Hospital handing out Rhythm Pax to children going through the same treatments he did.

Chris and Rich Burd are one of Geist’s most recognizable couples, calling Feather Cove III and Lawrence Township home. While greater Indianapolis has gotten to know them through their :30 second Burd Ford commercials, many Lawrence residents know them through their four children in Lawrence schools just like any other family.

Fortville police officer Matt Fox was shot multiple times at point-blank range and lived to talk about it. What was striking about this photo was the dent from the bullet wound in his forehead that makeup could not cover up.
By Tom Britt Sitting down and chatting with Windermere residents John and Tina Gianfagna renews your love of family, marriage, and community service. Their story begins at the Pratt Institute of Design in New York when then 16-year-old sweethearts fell in love and were married after graduation four years later. They began a design firm and settled in Marietta, Ohio where they raised four children; Gianni, Thomas, Diane, and Jeanette. “We had some large brand clients like 3M and Timex that we worked with for years,” said John as he reminisced over his years with the Gianfagna Group he and Tina started in 1973. The Gianfagna Group was a family business with oldest son Gianni active in the business up until they sold the business in 2001.
John and Tina Gianfagna, holding a photo of their late daughter Jeanette in their “kitchen of the mind” home studio. In 1999, their daughter Jeanette was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer. She lived in Windermere with her husband and two children. “John and I would drive over from Marietta every weekend to help out with the kids and visit with her while she was going through radiation, chemotherapy, and radical surgery,” recanted Tina. While the family business was thriving in Marietta, John and Tina felt the need to move to Windermere to be closer to Jeanette. “We loved Marietta and raised all our kids there,” said Tina. “We packed up the moving trucks and moved to Fishers Continued on Next Page

The perfect cup from the birth place of coffee
S
ometime in the 9th century and in the Ethiopian province of Keffa, the shepherd Khaldi was intrigued by the fact that his flock of goats tended to become lively and more joyful every time they ate the ripe berries off the coffee plant. His discovery had opened the avenue for the use and spread of coffee across the world making it now the world’s second most traded commodity, taking a backseat only to petroleum, with the coffee market earning nearly $60 billion dollars annually. While Ethiopia is among the top ten exporters of coffee, it is uniquely the highest consumer of the coffee it produces. The Ethiopian coffee ceremony is primarily a spiritual event in which coffee is served for healing, decompression, relaxation, and for reflecting on life and counting blessings. It is also social event where family, neighbors and friends gather and share their thoughts, feelings, concerns, gossip and community events. The Ethiopian tradition dictates one should not drink coffee alone.
At the Global Village Coffee of Saint Yared Ethiopian Cuisine, we have brought that authentic and timeless Ethiopian tradition to Fishers/Geist. Our coffee beans are not only the best Arabica beans but also they are roasted fresh with an extraordinary reverence and technical mastery. Come and open the day and everyday with us beginning at 6:00 a.m. or join us for lunch or dinner, and experience that other Ethiopian adventure in timeless culinary taste.
