In the hundred-plus year history of Indiana high school basketball, only five coaches have won as many as 750 games. One of them is Lawrence North’s Jack Keefer, who entered this season with 760 career wins. Dead ahead is the all-time leader, Loogootee’s Jack Butcher at 806. Coach Keefer eclipsed 700 wins for Lawrence North in the first game of this season, an 87-49 victory over Park Tudor. But in a career that includes four state championships, including three in a row from 2004-2006, it’s probably not close to the top highlight.

Keefer declines to name a favorite team or player, but admits that one team was very special.

Without “The 2006 team was probably the best, as far Oden, he just decided he better do more.” as overall talent and depth,” he says. “They won 45 or 50 games in a row.” Over five decades, Keefer has seen a lot of changes in the game and the athletes That team included two future NBA firsthe coaches. round draft choices in Greg Oden and “There’s a big difference in kids today,” Mike Conley. Keefer says. “I started coaching in a small school with 600 kids. The gym was packed “One time Oden was hurt,” Keefer says. every night, and all they talked about all “We were playing the third-ranked team week was the next ball game. Now, we’ve in the state, and I was nervous as heck. Conley walks up to me and asked what was got 2,500 students here and probably wrong. “In those days you only played 18 games a year, maybe more if you won the sectional. But now they play 64 games in the summer, play some fall and spring ball. I really think it wears some of them out.” Despite coaching for 45 years, Keefer has no immediate plans to retire. He may end up as the all-time leader sometime around 2020, but that’s not what keeps him on the job. “My wife’s not ready to retire and if you just stay home you get bored,” he says. “It’s a hard job. You run into kids that aren’t thinking straight, that want more playing time. You’re dealing with a lot of stuff. It’s not worth it just to get a record that nobody cares about. “(Duke Coach) Mike Krzyzewski told me, ‘If you think you want to retire go one more year, and then you’ll know you want to retire.’ So that’s what I’m doing. But I still enjoy Indianapolis, and I still like the kids at this age.”

70-ACRE WATERFRONT PARK COMING TO GEIST Perhaps the biggest news for Geist in 2017, Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness announced plans for a 70-acre waterfront park coming to the area. It will be the largest city park yet. The projects and initiatives center around 75 acres of land in the IMI quarry area just east of Olio Road on the south side of the Geist bridge.

GERMANTOWN: THE LOST CITY UNDER GEIST RESERVOIR Boating, kayaking, and sport fishing on scenic Geist Reservoir create fun summer memories, but after 70 years as Indiana’s largest manmade lake, fading from memory is what lies beneath. Germantown, the first community in Lawrence Township, was established in 1834, and we took a deep dive into the history of the old town.

FOXGARDIN FAMILY: A FORTVILLE FAVORITE COMING TO GEIST FoxGardin Chef/Owner Jacob Burgess and Managing Partner Toby Shelton brought a new concept to the Geist area earlier in 2017. FoxGardin Family has been a big hit at 104th Street and Olio Road.

TAXMAN BREWING COMPANY SET TO OPEN SECOND LOCATION IN FORTVILLE Leah and Nathan Huelsebusch recently brought their Bargersvillebased Taxman Brewing Company to Fortville. The new Fortville location at 29-35 S. Main St, has enjoyed success early on with a wide array of drink and menu options.

AN IRISH LEGEND RICK STREIFF RETIRES AFTER 23 SEASONS AS CATHEDRAL FOOTBALL COACH

Writer / Jon Shoulders Photography provided by Brian Brosmer & Ray Sup

When contemplating the long list of achievements that comprise his lengthy coaching career, Rick Streiff is quick to distribute the credit among his past and present players and coaching staff. Still, a career that includes a record 10 state football championships with Cathedral High School – including five consecutive state titles and 32 straight tournament wins between 2010 and 2014 – is one heck of a run for any one coach. “The biggest thing I’ve learned is that coaching is all about relationships,” Streiff says. “When you can build relationships with your coaches and players, that player is going to give you a little bit extra because he knows you care about him off the field. My players would tell you that I can get after you with the best of them, but when we walk off the field, they know I still love them.” While many high school athletes dream of someday competing at a professional level, Streiff knew by age 16 that a career in coaching and teaching was the right path for him. After achieving All-State honors and lettering during all four of his years as a running back at Monrovia High School, he went on to become a three-year starter at Butler and contributed to an undefeated Bulldogs season in 1983. “The influence of my high school coach, Wayne Stahley, became one of the things that made me think that coaching is what I wanted to do,” Streiff recalls. “Mike Gillin, who recently won his 300th game of high school football as a coach, was one of the assistants. I was very fortunate to play under some guys that were kind of a who’s who of high school coaching.” Upon graduating, Streiff began developing his coaching chops through assistant positions at Butler and Bishop Chatard High School. His first head coaching experience came during a single season at Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School, after which he began his celebrated tenure as

head coach of the Cathedral Fighting Irish from 1989 to 2002 and from 2008 until the present, with a head coaching stint at North Central High School in between. Cathedral Athletic Director Doug Seagrave feels Streiff ’s attention to detail and willingness to devote substantial amounts of time toward game planning and analysis, has contributed to his long-term success. “I believe his biggest strength is his ability to build a culture of success,” Seagrave says. “Kids and coaches believe in his message. Everyone around him knows the importance of representing Cathedral in a manner that brings respect to the institution.” After compiling a 221-77 record at Cathedral, Streiff feels that building player-coach bonds is simultaneously one of the biggest challenges, and one of the most rewarding undertakings, of being a successful head coach.

prompted some self-reflection that strengthened his resolve to spend as much time as his schedule allows with his wife Julianne and their three children – John (27), a teacher at Cathedral, Lauren (24), who works for Gannett in Indianapolis, and Tom (21), a junior at IU-Bloomington. “I’ve done this for 34 years all together, with 28 as a head coach,” Streiff says. “I have two grandsons now, and I’m looking forward to seeing the family more. Streiff plans to continue teaching World History at Cathedral, and is excited at the prospect of traveling more frequently with Julianne and improving his golf game with increased free time during summers. “Rick is different in that he is one of the most humble people you will meet,” Seagrave adds. “He does not have the ego of most people who have achieved a modicum of his success. He sees the big picture and understands the program and school are most important.” Although he’s enjoyed every victory and championship trophy that added to his impressive coaching record and helped make the Fighting Irish nearly synonymous with Indiana football prowess, Streiff says he always preferred that his players acquired valuable life lessons, rather than victories, after returning to the locker room.

“There are lessons through the course of football that maybe make a difference with learning about facing challenges, sticking to a goal and things like that,” Streiff says. “If all we taught the kids was blocking and tackling, we didn’t do a good job. If we’ve coached them and done a good job, that’s going to help them become good people down the road.”

MARLIN JACKSON’S FIGHT FOR LIFE FOUNDATION IS MAKING A STRONG IMPACT IN THE LIVES OF YOUTH

Writer / Kara Kavensky Photographer / Jamie Sangar

Marlin Jackson grew up in the projects in Sharon, Pennsylvania to a mom who had addiction issues. Jackson did not grow up with a nurturing parent. He did not have positive social or emotional role models. He was not presented with a solid example of how to love himself or other people, but he persevered.

with law enforcement. Your foundation is so important to the fabric of who you become, seeds are planted, with a different environment, that goes with you.”

At the University of Michigan, Jackson was an All-American as a freshman and as a sophomore. Jackson was postured to enter the NFL after his junior year. His football career came into jeopardy when he had been engaged in an altercation. Jackson was not the instigator of the situation, but had “As a youth, I had a lot of grace,” Jackson been arrested nonetheless. Michigan Coach says. “I could have followed down the wrong Lloyd Carr told him that if he was found path but was able to escape altercation guilty, he would be off the team. For the first INDY METRO / JANUARY 2018 / TownePost.com

time, Jackson realized that this could all be gone. The feeling was devastating. The guy who had started the altercation later sued Jackson after graduation, Jackson countersued and won. He didn’t collect any money from the lawsuit, he simply wanted his name cleared. While Jackson was at the University of Michigan, his psychology class volunteered in inner city Detroit schools. As Jackson listened to the stories of the students. He could relate, for he had lived their life. When Jackson shared that he had the same

experiences, the kids didn’t believe him. “You’re lying, you’re Marlin Jackson, All-American,” said one of the students. Jackson had opened their eyes to possibilities and these kids had opened his. The kids could dare to dream, and so could Jackson. It was in this inner-city school that Jackson knew he would start a program to help kids like these, kids like him. The Fight for Life Foundation is the program that Jackson needed when he was young. When Jackson was drafted by the Colts, he listened to Coach Tony Dungy speak of faith, family and football, Jackson was surprised. It was the first time he heard a coach mention faith and family sequentially before football. “The positivity that Dungy and Bill Polian spoke of was something that I’d never heard before,” Jackson says. “They emphasized our role as a man in the community, our faith and our relationship with God. I was hungry for something that I didn’t know that I was starving for.” In his second year in the NFL, Jackson created The Fight for Life Foundation. As his football career was winding down due to injuries a few years later, he poured his passion into Fight for Life. Jackson made a commitment to himself and God and moved forward on his social entrepreneurial path.

“Fight for Life focuses upon social and emotional learning,” says Lisa Mitchell, Director of Programming for Fight for TownePost.com / JANUARY 2018 / INDY METRO

Life. “It provides kids with a common language to express core concepts of accountability, integrity, self -worth and honesty. It also emphasizes the concept of volunteerism and being good citizens in their family, school and community. For many of these kids, these are concepts that they are not being exposed to at home.” Implementation happens in the classroom with a comprehensive curriculum that is age appropriate. The programming may be implemented from Pre-K to 8th grade and is currently in six schools. A plan is in place to roll it statewide in the next year, with the ultimate goal of nationwide impact. The first pilot for the program was adopted by Jackson’s alma mater,Musser Elementary. Early adopters in Indianapolis include Pike Township, Phalen Leadership Academy and IPS. “Fight for Life provides teachers with a program that allows students to feel seen, heard and valued every day,” Mitchell says. “In today’s society, we must create treatment programs for the opioid surge, but more importantly: prevention,” adds State Senator Jim Merritt. “Marlin’s Fight for Life program is exactly what we are in need of because prevention is a much-needed part of the solution. With prevention programs like Fight for Life, we all benefit.” For each $1 dollar spent on Social Emotional Learning programs, the return is $11 in total economic benefit to society. The real benefits in the lives of the children are immeasurable. For more information, visit: fightforlifefoundation.org. INDY METRO / JANUARY 2018 / TownePost.com

SMALL BEGINNINGS

THE GARDEN CYCLE BEGINS WITHIN THE SEED over again for the gardener. I love the organic, non-GMO seed providers like, Seed Savers The real birth of any garden begins within Exchange, Seeds of Change, and Baker Creek the seed. Seeds are an incredible thing to Heirloom Seeds. But my two favorites are work with and teach your children about Renee’s Seeds and Johnny’s Select. They have particularly when it comes to teaching about a fantastic selection and a great corporate where our food originates. While it is way culture. Renee often answers her own phone too soon to begin your seeds for the garden while working in her California garden. All what you would like to accomplish once can be found online. the rush of spring chores arrives. This is the time to get organized! It is so important to select heirloom and non-GMO varieties. Non-GMO seeds are not owned by mega companies, I think food and seeds are a natural born right, just like food. If you own the seed, you own the food. And if you own the food system… Well now, don’t get me started. Now, I am from a ‘Big Ag’ family, and I appreciate the great need to feed the world. I am a woman who has fought for justice in the poverty arena all her life. But there is a deep need today for balance in the farming world. wonderful. And in the home garden, where our small batches of food are grown, the organic path is easy to accomplish. Besides, who wants a GMO seed with Salmon DNA in your homegrown tomatoes? Yuck! This is an excellent month to search seed catalogs and find the type of plants you would like to begin indoors in the month of February. In Indianapolis, we are in Zone 5b. Hoosiers begin ‘sowing’ (placing seeds under the soil) seeds indoors around February 15. You can begin with your ‘cold crops’ like Kale, Spinach, Kohlrabi, Cauliflower, Broccoli, Cabbage and more. These veggies are called cold crops because, you guessed it, they love the cold. Cool, fun fact, did you know Pansy flowers are in the Spinach family and are also edible? They are a cold crop too and you may begin sowing Pansy seeds really early. Organization is the key to excellent seed germination and success. Keep a journal and a garden calendar. Note when you started and when you see the first leaves emerge. The back of your seed envelope will have all the instruction you need, so keep them for further seasonal instructions. Keep your seed packets in an airtight container. I love a product called the Seed Keeper Deluxe. If you need help, ask your local garden center for instruction. Gardeners in general love to teach, and I love sharing these tips with you all to help you learn how to, “Grow a More Beautiful Life!” Happy planting!

See it, Hear it, Believe it! Technology Interiors recently relocated its showroom to 8977 East 116th Street in Fishers, where customers can learn firsthand about its various video, audio and automation options and services. Customers will also be able to check out the company’s brand-new video wall, a first of its kind in the U.S., at the new showroom. “This showroom will have five movie theaters, a video wall, a grand piano and so much more than most people have ever imagined in an electronic store boutique,” says owner Rick Goren. Since 1998, Technology Interiors has served Central Indiana with home theater audio and video installations and is currently the state’s No. 1 seller of home theater screens and projectors, according to Goren. The company’s new showroom will also be home to the first JBL Synthesis in the Midwest — a 22-channel, 180-inch screen theater. “The new laser projectors will blow your mind when you see how spectacular the image is, and the new paradigm Personna, the pinnacle of the audio-video industry, will be prominently displayed in our showroom too,” Goren adds. Technology Interiors will also highlight the newest and latest technologies for video conferencing and huddle rooms. The camera system is a state-ofthe-art 4K analytic and forensic tracking camera system. “It’s a high level of learning every day to keep up with thousands of brands, as technology exponentiates,” Goren says. “We have to stay educated, and we do that through attending trade shows multiple times a year in San Diego and Orlando.” As for Technology Interiors’ new showroom, Goren says you’ll have to see it to believe it. “I really let the designer go wild with the showroom, and the creativity flows throughout the new facility from the moment you walk in,” Goren says.

Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger

“Attack of the Tiny Tornadoes” has just been released, and it’s blowing young readers away. Local Author, Kelly Tully, just released the children’s book designed specifically for readers in middle grades, (ages 7-11) and it’s already the number one new release on Amazon for the Children’s Time Travel Fiction genre. The book is the first in the Secret List Series about a young boy who sets out to conquer his fears. The book also weaves in a little supernatural and fantasy, and even time travel. It’s Tully's first novel, one which she describes as a labor of love. "I've always been into books.” Tully says. “But writing the novel wasn’t something I specifically planned.” But a higher plan awaited her. Through her passion for books, Tully became involved at her children’s school as a Literacy Mentor. In compliance with the Read Across America program, she was trained to read and connect with kids who were not reading at or above their grade level. Once or twice a week, she came in to read to a few students. “These kids really struggled,” Tully says. “But when I started working with them and that lightbulb came on, it brought tears to my eyes. It was so rewarding.” It was during that time that Tully discovered a gap in the second to fourth or fifth grade level reading. She noticed the age group was too advanced for lower level reading but not ready for big 300 to 400-page chapter books. The need for middle grade books really came into focus when Tully’s then third grade son was looking for something interesting to read. When Tully tried to help him choose a book at his level, she couldn’t find one that wasn’t either too easy or wasn’t a big chapter book. “So, I told him I’d write a book that he would want to read,” she says. “He told me he’d like to have rocks and gems in the book somehow, and the magic just evolved.”

LOCAL AUTHOR RELEASES NEW CHILDREN’S BOOK The journey to getting her book published wasn’t quick and easy, but Tully says she learned a lot along the way. “I learned to put in a lot of research time,” she says. “I went to writing workshops to connect with other writers, and I had experts review my manuscripts. They gave me valuable advice.” One librarian who reviewed the manuscript told Tully that her book meets Indiana’s Social Studies standards for teaching time and place. Now that her first book has been released, Tully has already finished the second book in the Secret List Series and started on the third. She’s also releasing “The Map to Myself,” a book for young adult audiences, that deals with a range of teenage themes like friendships and fitting in with the right crowd, peer pressure and the dangers of social media. Tully is thrilled to be able to pursue her passion for books and writing. But she 30 / GEIST MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2018 / atGeist.com

hasn’t forgotten about her love of inspiring that same passion in others. So, she shared some advice of her own. For parents facing the challenge of finding an appropriate book for their child, she recommends going with your child’s interests. “Non-fiction is an often-forgotten genre,” she says. “So, if your child loves alligators, find non-fiction books about alligators. But above all, keep reading, because good readers make good writers and vice versa.” For budding authors, she cautions about getting discouraged. “Take it one sentence at a time,” she says. “Let an idea spark, get it on paper and let it build. Don’t forget, everything is a draft. It doesn’t have to be perfect the first time around. You can go back and edit later.” Get your copy of “Attack of the Tiny Tornadoes” today on Amazon. Connor Lingle is the new chef and owner at Tegry Bistro in Geist.

Chef’s Special:

21-year old takes over at Tegry Bistro Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger Photographer / Jamie Sangar

Favorite neighborhood Asian-inspired bistro, Tegry Bistro, is in for some exciting changes. Starting with brand new owner and head chef, Connor Lingle. He’s just getting used to the title, but he’s no stranger to the restaurant and the food industry. “I was born with a passion for cooking,” Lingle says. “I actually knew at 10 or 11 years old that I wanted to be a chef.” Although just 21 years of age, Lingle’s journey has already been long and colorful. The chef and entrepreneur says it all started in the kitchen with his grandma cooking homemade meals. “She taught me how to make all kinds of things,” he says. “So, I tried it out on my babysitter. I chopped up onions, seasoned them and sautéed them for her. She loved them. From that moment on, I knew cooking was what I wanted to do.” Anxious to get started, Lingle got his first restaurant job at Stone Creek Dining Company at just age 15. He started out bussing tables, but it wasn’t long before he worked his way in to the kitchen. Then it was on to Tegry Bistro.

There, he met a mentor who would change his life forever. Owner and award-winning Chef, Joe Dagvadorj, brought Lingle on board and taught him a lot about the business during his junior and senior years of high school. When the time came to decide about life after high school, Lingle set his sights on Kendall College, the second best culinary school in the United States, and got accepted. His boss, Joe, had different advice for the budding chef. “Joe encouraged me to go to culinary school at Ivy Tech and keep working,” he says. So, Lingle withdrew his acceptance at Kendall and started culinary school at Ivy Tech. He tackled his baking requirement, but after just a few months, he realized he wanted to get practical experience in European restaurants. Lingle’s plan was to find a good paying job, save money and travel the world for a year, gaining experience as a “stagiaire,” or volunteer assistant chef. Still, he intended to stick with it to build his savings a little longer. Until one day, Lingle stopped in Taxman Brewery for lunch, and the old familiar pull of the restaurant business struck him. He asked the manager for a job doing dishes. He quickly moved up to cook at Taxman. atGeist.com / JANUARY 2018 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 31

“I learned a lot more in that job than I had ever learned on my own,” Lingle says. “It was the most intense, highly structured kitchen with big hierarchy. But the leadership was good.” Fate intervened again, and took Lingle back to Tegry. He stopped in for lunch, when his old friend Joe happened to be working. Lingle was happy to connect with his mentor and began telling him about being back in cooking. Chef Joe’s workload had become tremendous. Handling Tegry’s Fishers location along with their Brownsburg and Trader’s Point locations was stretching him thin. His nephew and sushi chef, Anand Tsogtbaatar, was also being stretched thin. Without hesitation, Joe offered Lingle the opportunity to take over the restaurant. “At first, I didn’t take him seriously. I really thought he was joking,” Lingle says. “But then he followed me out to my car and continued to convince me.” Joe explained to him that opportunities like this are rare, and he encouraged Lingle to follow his passion, not his paycheck. After thinking it over and talking to his parents, he told Chef Joe he was in. Lingle has already made plenty of progress in making the restaurant his own. First, Lingle has lifted a weight from sushi

chef Anand’s shoulders by handling management duties. Lingle is already developing a new menu, too. He’s minimizing the current menu to feature the more popular items and create some new favorites, incorporating some of his own recipes. Starting in January, Tegry will be offering specials to help determine the most popular items. "Our new menu is going to be sleek and modern, and it's going to promote the most popular items," Lingle says. Besides the specials, Tegry will start offering sake flights or samplings. They’ll also update their beer and wine menu to add more local and craft beers. In the meantime, Lingle says Tegry will be learning and adjusting along with their customers. "We're not sure how Tegry will evolve exactly," he says. "But we're going to let it evolve naturally, starting with gradual changes. Ultimately, it will be a big change from what it is now." The changes will be noticeable in the way Tegry capitalizes on the restaurant’s already popular features. The sushi bar is already wildly popular, featuring sushi made the traditional Japanese way with perfect portions. Tegry starts with the highest-grade sushi rice and seaweed available. Lingle's goal is to expand beyond the sushi bar. "We're moving away from the traditional Asian sushi restaurant we once were," he adds. "We want to concentrate on making our kitchen menu as popular as our sushi menu.” Tegry's atmosphere is another great feature Lingle wants to exploit. The restaurant’s modern, classy yet relaxed vibe will be amped up by adding dimmed lighting with candles and jazz music in the evening. Visit Tegry Bistro at 11561 Geist Pavilion Drive in the Geist Pavilion center off Olio Road. For more info, visit them at tegrybistro.com.

ROMAN & LEO ALL-BOYS BOUTIQUE HAS SNAZZY CLOTHES FOR YOUR TODDLER

Owner Angela Castelli named her all-boys boutique after her sons: Roman and Leo.

Eight years ago, when Angela and Justin Castelli were pregnant with a baby boy, they headed to the mall, eager to pick out some spiffy duds for their newborn. But the merchandise they found left them underwhelmed.

stop moms from shopping for their daughters. “They’ll put their girls in little graphic tees and cardigans with leggings and a black headband,” Angela says. “They don’t necessarily want the pink and purple all the time, so my store offers an alternative style that’s tomboy chic.” Roman & Leo, the only boys boutique in the Midwest, carries up to size 6. “Once 7-year-olds get into school, all they want to wear is athletic apparel,” Angela says. “I’m in the thick of it now with my oldest son. We don’t carry any of that. Our bread-and-butter is baby and toddler wear.”

In a world of change, our focus is steadfast.

Open Tuesday through Friday from 10-5 and Saturday from 10-2, Angela chose store hours that are conducive for moms to shop while their little ones are in daycare or preschool. Online orders come through during all hours of the night when moms have down time. “Social media is such a mom network because they post pics of their kids and if a friend asks where they got a piece of clothing, they’ll hop online and purchase it,” says Angela, noting that they offer an option for in-store pick-up too. Roman is now 7, Leo is 5, and little Silas is just a newborn. Though everyone has been teasing her about incorporating the baby’s name into the business name, Angela has no plans to do so (too many headaches recreating the logo, website, bags, etc.). She is, however, toying with the idea of creating a “Silas Baby Collection.”
