much smoother for Lemons. Acquiring a business and moving it seems like a chore, but Lemons is enthusiastic about the possibilities in Fishers. “This is a great time to be in Fishers. It’s really dynamic and cutting-edge advancements are being brought in with a focus on the arts and technology,” Lemons says. “That’s the kind of community I really enjoy being involved in.” It’s also just a five-minute drive from home to the store. Not every part of the business is so quick, however. Sometimes it can take up to 10 hours to set up her largest looms a task she does for some of her one-day classes.

Tabby Tree Weaver offers classes for beginners to advanced weavers. Classes can last up to three all-day sessions, like the towel workshop that creates six towels per person. For Lemons, this is a dream profession. She grew up learning to crochet and playing with textiles. At one point, she imagined opening a yarn shop. “It was just when I left my full-time job a year and a half ago that I had time to really weave,” Lemons says. “I love textiles — it’s something that has always attracted me.” Lemons hopes to attract young weavers with new classes. She wants to create a bracelet class or bring more into a class where they make bands for camera straps, belts or dog collars. An 18-year-old man came into the shop with his grandmother, Lemons explains. She started talking to the grandmother before hearing that the young man was the weaver. She hopes this becomes less of a rare occurrence. Lemons wants people to pop in and check out the looms, just to look. Then, maybe they’ll return to learn how to make a rug, dog collar, camera strap or towel. Tabby Tree Weaver is located at 9832 N by NE Blvd in Fishers. It’s open Wednesday – Friday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. It’s closed Sunday – Tuesday. The price of classes varies but are usually around $100 - $250. MEAL PREP SERVICE OFFERS CLEAN & ORGANIC FOOD IN HAMILTON COUNTY Writer / Jon Shoulders Photography Provided

Six years ago, Lacy Clark founded what she says still stands as Hamilton County’s only meal prep service that offers food free of sugar, sodium, dairy, HMOs, GMOs and MSG. Since then, Clark says her business, FitWoo Nutrition, has helped to change the lives of many local individuals and families through clean eating. “I’ve been an athlete for 24 years and was in personal training for eight years,” says Clark, a native of Huntington, Indiana, and an IUPUI grad. “I’ve seen a lot of people try hard in the gym but fail in their eating habits, and what we do is help to fill that missing piece. We provide full, clean meals and snacks for five days out of the week that

are ready to be heated up and eaten.” Clark originally founded FitWoo as a fitness training service but realized many of her clients weren’t seeing results despite a clear dedication during gym time. In 2013, she transitioned her business to focus primarily on nutrition and says she’s seen drastic improvements in the shape and overall health of many clients since that time. “I realized I wasn’t solving or helping anyone’s problems - I was personally training people but they were turning around and eating junk food,” Clark recalls. “So I transitioned full time to nutrition. We do still have personal trainers who will go to your home and work with you, but that’s for people who are already clients of our meal prep business.” atGeist.com / JANUARY 2020 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 11

Clark founded FitWoo as a female-only concept, but four years ago decided to establish the company as a meal prep service for any individual, couple or family who might be interested in dietary improvement. “I really saw a need among women who were having kids and down on themselves about their weight, and that’s why we started out as female-only,” Clark says. “But it’s grown to be a service for everyone. I’d say about 90% of our clientele are people who know how to eat healthy but don’t have time for the prepping and cooking. I work with a lot of attorneys, realtors and people who might be eating in their car every day.” Full-time clients of FitWoo Nutrition receive three meals and two snacks per day, for five days a week. Each vacuum-

sealed meal is made in the Cicerobased FitWoo kitchen, and meals are delivered to clients on Sunday nights for the week labeled with full nutrition facts. Clark offers custom, individualized meal planning for weight-loss and fitness competition clients, but primarily offers eight staple meals and two new menu items per week for general clients.

“I always tell people that I have nothing to sell you — I’m just teaching you how to change your lifestyle because we don’t believe in diets,” Clark says. “I grew up in a household where my mom tried every diet out there, and none of them worked. To that end, Clark released a cookbook last year titled “Clean It Up,” with more than 50 recipes she’d compiled over the previous five years along with fellow chefs and family members. Her idea was to offer simple recipes free of salt, sugar and dairy — along with some vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options — that the average family can make and actually enjoy. When it comes to her meal prep service, Clark says she’s ultimately trying to effect permanent, positive changes in the lives of her clients. She says she’s tripled her clientele in the last 12 months and hopes to continue growing in order to help as many people as possible with their dietary habits.

“All the meals that are delivered are freezer and oven safe and ready to be reheated and eaten,” Clark explains. “It’s just real food, from the ground — simple. The important thing is to make the meals flavorful because people will think this food, that’s free of all the bad stuff, is boring.”

POPULAR FORD’S GARAGE RESTAURANT OPENS FIRST INDIANA LOCATION AT HAMILTON TOWN CENTER Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Michael Durr

An auto-themed restaurant concept located in Central Indiana, home of the Indy 500? Makes sense. Ford’s Garage, a Florida-based restaurant chain with 12 stores in the Sunshine State and one in Dearborn, Michigan, is officially

adding a location in Indy to its lineup, and founder Mike McGuigan says the decision was a no-brainer.

was really a matter of time before we started in the midwest states rather than breaking into the east or west coasts.”

“As we continue to expand out of Florida, and being a tourist destination on the west coast of Florida, a large portion of our patrons and tourists are snowbirds and come from the midwest, so there’s been a built-in brand awareness,” McGuigan explains. “So it

Indy’s association with auto and racing culture played an additional role in McGuigan’s decision, and the Noblesville location, in the space previously occupied by Mo’s Irish Pub in Hamilton Town Center, features decor that ties into that culture.

JANUARY 2020

“When you combine all these factors, Indianapolis was a first choice outside of Florida to build a presence other than our Dearborn, Michigan, restaurant,” say McGuigan, who first launched the Ford’s Garage concept in downtown Fort Myers — less than one mile from the former winter residence of Henry Ford himself — in 2012, and began scouting locations outside of Florida two years ago. The eatery, like all of its sister stores, is a casual, all-ages establishment with a menu full of classic American fare like burgers, wings and salads, as well as craft beer, wine and cocktails. The visual aesthetic in each Ford’s Garage is a throwback to prohibition-era taverns and 1920s service stations, with gas pumps, memorabilia and actual Ford vehicles adorning the bar and dining areas. “We’re very burger-centric but almost anyone can find something to satisfy them on the menu,” says Sam Tancredi, Indianapolis operating partner with Ford’s Garage. “For the fish lovers, we sell a blackened salmon and two tuna dishes that are big sellers, and there are chicken tenders and a great French onion soup.” Several burgers on the menu will be named after notable former and current Hoosiers and iconic figures associated with the city and state, including former Indiana Pacer Reggie Miller, former Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, as well as legendary auto racing drivers and Indy 500 winners A.J. Foyt and Mario Andretti. “We’re so excited for the community here to experience the restaurant,” Tancredi says. “We have two Ford Model A cars inside the building, one over the bar and one in the side dining room. There’s an old Ford truck out on the front patio that customers can also experience, and they can actually eat on the truck bed. It’s really a fun concept - kids love it, and car buffs can appreciate it.” The Ford’s team decided to tear down several walls and a refrigeration space

Founder Mike McGuigan

in the former Mo’s Irish Pub bar area in order to create a more open floor plan in the approximately 7,100-square-foot building. Five patio doors will open onto 1,200 feet of outdoor patio space for the spring and summer months. Tancredi says local support behind the restaurant has been largely positive since Ford’s Garage leaders announced plans to open the northside restaurant. “When we made the announcement we were surprised how many people here had heard about us,” Tancredi says. “A lot of people here have been down to Fort Myers at the original downtown location or the other ones in Florida.”

POPULAR BREAKFAST & LUNCH RESTAURANT OPENS SECOND LOCATION AT THE YARD AT FISHERS DISTRICT Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Michael Durr

Michelle Sirum, manager at Rize breakfast, brunch and lunch restaurant in Fishers, says the opening of the establishment in November was the result of more that just a growing customer following - it was nearly a necessity. “Our first Rize location at the Ironworks hotel is quite smaller than our new Fishers location, and we didn’t anticipate it being

the hit that it’s become,” she says. “That location services the hotel with breakfast and lunch room service, so between that and the 60 or so seats we have there, it was time for a second place to meet the continuing demand.”

Rize restaurant, with a capacity of about 140 inside as well as a 30-seat, dog-friendly patio during the warmer months.

“We really think the location in Fishers is great, with the apartments nearby where people can walk right over with their Rize Ironworks opened back in the fall of dog,” Sirum says. “It’s a great option for 2017, and Sirum says the eatery was an people who like the concept but are maybe immediate success with wait times of nearly hesitant because of the way the wait times two hours on weekends. The new location at can be at Ironworks.” The Yard at Fishers District, near Ikea, more than doubles the capacity of the original Rize is owned by Indy-based Cunningham JANUARY 2020

Restaurant Group (CRG), which operates more than 30 eateries in Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky including BRU Burger, Mesh, Stone Creek Dining Company Union 50, Vida and others. “It’s a great meeting spot for a number of demographics, whether it’s business meetings, families or people just out and about,” says Carissa Newton, CRG marketing director. Sirum says the restaurant’s focus on fresh dishes and unique, slightly offbeat ingredient combos has contributed to its ongoing popularity. “I think it’s really our farm-to-table aspect that sets us apart too,” adds Sirum, who has been with CRG for two years. “And we combine that with our local sourcing — most of what we get is from farmers here in Indiana. Sometimes that’s not doable, but we do it as much as we can. Also, CRG has its own spot where we do our own herbs for the CRG restaurants.” Rize’s local purveyors include Miller Amish Country Poultry, Tulip Tree Creamery, Eisele’s Honey, Smoking Goose, Blue Dog Bakery, Silverthorn Farms and more. The Rize brunch menu consists of a few traditional favorites and some unique creations like the Egg Tart (egg custard, Gruyere, spinach, hibiscus mustard, pickled onion and a seasonal roasted veggie) and the Strata (Yukon gold potatoes, egg custard, tomato jam, mushroom, pesto and ham). You’ll also find breakfast bowls, sandwiches, salads, smoothies and an open-face toast menu with selections like the BLT, featuring thick-cut bacon, romaine, tomato and Thai basil vinaigrette, and the Cold-Smoked Salmon, which comes with garlic-caper cream cheese, pickled onion and tomato. “A lot of the dishes are very fresh and very light in nature,” says Newton, adding that Rize Fishers plans to offer catering options for private events and parties. “One benefit of our concept is that you can order anything off the menu at any time during the day. So you can order lunch at early breakfast time, or brunch during lunchtime.

We think that flexibility, within the concept of a unique menu that isn’t a run-of-the-mill chain restaurant, is very nice. People get tired of the same old restaurants everywhere they go.”

According to Sirum, a recent customer brunch fave is the Miller Farm Chicken Hash, which comes with a sunny-side-up herbed duck egg, tomato-fennel gravy, potatoes, beech mushrooms and basil pesto. Rize Fishers also offers cinnamon rolls, muffins and other pastry items from its sister business Croûte Baking Company, which opened as a to-go bakery concept earlier this year on North Meridian Street. Croûte also houses CRG’s commissary bakery and tasting kitchen. Since the November 11 grand opening, Sirum says Rize Fishers has seen a steady growth in customer attendance, which she feels confident will continue through winter. “We’re definitely picking up in volume,” she says. “There’s been lots of good feedback from locals, especially those who’ve been to the Ironworks and are excited to have a location here in their neighborhood. We’re hearing a lot of people saying, ‘It’s about time.’ We’re glad to finally be here in Fishers.” Rize is located at 9705 Fishers District Drive, Suite 760, in Fishers. NICER NEIGHBORHOODS FISHERS VIBRANT NEIGHBORHOOD MATCHING GRANT PROGRAM ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS UNTIL JANUARY 31 Writer / Seth Johnson Photography Provided

From lighting replacements to tree plantings, many Fishers neighborhoods are beautified every year via the city’s vibrant neighborhood matching grant program. “The purpose of the grant is to help with exterior beautification and enhancement projects,” says Megan Schaefer, a planner with the City of Fishers. “[We try to] help with funding for neighborhoods that are older and maybe need a little bit more help. We want to incentivize improvements for older neighborhoods so that they continue looking just as good as the new subdivisions that go in.” Applications for the 2020 vibrant neighborhood matching grants are open from now through Jan. 31. Both individuals and HOA’s are encouraged to apply for up to $5,000 of funding. For the 2020 cycle, funding for the program was increased to $75,000, which marks a $20,000 increase from 2019.

It’s also worth noting that the 2020 vibrant neighborhood matching grant program combines the former tree and neighborhood matching grant programs, which had been separate for years. With this being said, both landscape and hardscape projects are eligible for consideration in the 2020 vibrant neighborhood matching grant program.

“We typically prioritize neighborhoods that are 10 years or older and also applicants who have not received funding from one of our former grant programs in the past,” she says.

“Previously, we had been administering the neighborhood matching grant for 19 years and the tree matching grant for eight years,” Schaefer says. “As we were administering those programs, we found that they essentially funded the same types of projects — it was neighborhoods applying for beautification projects such as sign upgrades or landscaping upgrades. So we thought, ‘Why don’t we just combine both of these programs into one? That will cut down on the time and cost that it takes to administer them.’”

“Let’s say the entrance to your subdivision is off of 116th Street,” Schaefer says. “Not only will that benefit the residents in your neighborhood, but it will also benefit everyone driving by it everyday.”

With the new vibrant neighborhood matching grants, Schaefer explains some of the major factors that are being taken into consideration. JANUARY 2020

Past that, the committee also considers how many people will be impacted by the project.

Last year, the Lantern Pines neighborhood (located just north of 96th Street on Lantern Road) received a neighborhood matching grant to help fund lighting improvements at the neighborhood’s entrance. “It was a beautification piece but then it also enhanced the security of our little neighborhood here that we’ve been so privileged to have for the last 25 years,” says Drew Boyd, president of the Lantern Pines Property Owners Association.

Now upon driving into his Lantern Pines neighborhood, Boyd is filled with an added sense of comfort.

soccer fields from 106th Street, as 12 inches of top soil and 3-foot high bushes were removed from the center island.”

“Every time I drive into the neighborhood at night now, everything is really lit up,” Boyd says. “The lighting just really made a big impact on the welcoming feel of the neighborhood.”

When it comes to the application process for 2020, individuals and HOA’s must submit all information by the Jan. 31 deadline. From there, applicants will be notified in the spring on whether they received the grant or not.

For the Bradford Ridge and Bradford Knoll neighborhoods (located at the intersection of 106th Street and Cumberland Road), it was a similar story, as the Bradford Ridge/ Knoll HOA recently used a matching grant from the city to make entrance updates. “The Fishers city matching grant allowed us to pool our reserves together with the city to remove old 25-year fencing and replace dead and overgrown bushes with new, hardy perennials,” says Bradford Ridge/Knoll HOA treasurer Rich Moorlach. “Sight lines were also significantly improved for shared HOA/city entrances to Cumberland Park

“The neighborhood then has until Nov. 1, 2020 to install or do the work for whatever their improvement is,” Schaefer says. “From there, they have to provide us pictures of project completion and proof of payment, and we will reimburse them for the costs that we granted.” All in all, Boyd says the City of Fishers makes the process simple and straightforward for applicants. “The process was a little bit intimidating at first, just because it was something

new,” Boyd says. “But once I read through the instructions and put the paperwork together, it was pretty turnkey.” At the end of the day, he believes that nicer neighborhoods make the City of Fishers a better place to live, work and play. “When we have nicer neighborhoods, it helps the whole town of Fishers continue to look good and become a place where people want to come and live,” Boyd says. For more information on how you or your HOA can apply for a vibrant neighborhood matching grant, be sure to visit fishers. in.us/1076/Matching-Grants. The application process remains open from now through Jan. 31.

CITY OF LAWRENCE OFFICIALLY OPENS $12.9M LAWRENCE POLICE DEPARTMENT HEADQUARTERS Writer / Braden Ochs . Photographer / Belinda Russell

David Hofmann, Chief of Police

n December 9, the new headquarters for the Lawrence Police Department (LPD) officially opened. After years of being stationed in the City of Lawrence Government Center, the LPD finally has its own building for all police operations. With a budget of $12.9M, the city was able to build a new 32,000 square foot LPD headquarters in a four and a half-acre lot. “The construction of this building gives us an identity and a way for us to better serve our citizens,” says David Hofmann, Chief of Police. Before December, the LPD was stationed in the City of Lawrence Government Center, which was not an adequate office space for police operations. They conducted interrogations in a former closet, they had no training room or fitness center for their police and a list of other inadequacies. Over the last few years, they hired an outside firm to conduct an objective report on whether or not they should fund this project. When the study came back, it was more than necessary. Hofmann, the mayor’s office, the controller’s office and members of the command staff teamed up to make this plan a reality. They started talking to architects and designers to make a plan, and in July 2018 they broke ground. They made sure the new building would be closer to the residents they protect. “Finally we have a safe and secure place for those who provide safety and security for residents in Lawrence,” Hofmann says, After finally moving into the headquarters at the beginning of December, this new space gives the LPD an opportunity for new advancements and new ways to connect to the residents of Lawrence. According to Hofmann, there are a lot of new features to the headquarters including 125 parking spaces, individual offices for detectives and investigators, three criminal rooms wired for AV recording, a 911 center in the basement, specialty storage rooms for evidence and firearms and more. 30 / GEIST MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2020 / atGeist.com

The LPD will also welcome Lawrence Township Schools, churches, businesses and many other community groups by opening a reception center for people to reserve for their community needs. All who were involved in the project made sure to design the new headquarters so the community can utilize the space as well and feel connected to the LPD. Even though the project as a whole will be better for all, there were still challenges

in the move-in process, according to Hofmann. The first challenge was to relocate the 9-1-1 call center. The second challenge was to safely and securely transfer thousands of pieces of evidence and property from their previous property room to their new property room. Hofmann made sure to involve highly specialized experts to make sure the move would go smoothly. “I have extreme confidence that the process

of moving has been handled with patience and professionalism, which is how we handle all of our business, Hofmann says. Hofmann and the Lawrence Police Department are excited to provide the residents of Lawrence with a safe place to come to them with any issue, big or small. For more information about the LPD and what they do for the community, visit cityoflawrence.org/police. You can visit their new headquarters at 5150 N Post Rd.

THE YOGA SPOT AT GEIST NEW YOGA STUDIO OPENS SERVING GEIST & FISHERS RESIDENTS Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Belinda Russell

The idea to have a neighborhood yoga studio was a concept that Melissa Webb cherished for several years before it became a reality. In late November, she opened The Yoga Spot a Geist, located at 10608 East 96th Street. It fulfills her goal of providing a place for area residents of all ages and abilities to feel supported as they explore varieties of yoga and different avenues of wellness. “I started thinking a long time ago that I wanted to have a studio in the Geist area neighborhood,” Webb says. “I have built a kind of clientele and I wanted to be in the community so I could hear what’s going

on. We have such incredible neighbors, and people in the community are doing amazing things.

Webb began taking and teaching yoga classes 18 years ago. In 2008, she left the field of banking to devote herself to teaching yoga. Over the years, she has taught in “One day last August, I went to get my various studios such as Geist Fitness nails done and I noticed the spot next door and also has been an instructor for the was available to rent. The studio, painted in tones of soft blues and grays, has a soothing atmosphere. Even though Webb has added some décor, it doesn’t compete with the overall peaceful and uncluttered interior. Cool lighting complete with dimmer switches adds to the ambiance. atGeist.com / JANUARY 2020 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 33

“I wanted to create a space where people feel safe to be who they are and can explore wellness in general,” she says. “They can feel supported and ask questions on where to start with a path right for them with yoga, meditation techniques, breathing techniques, essential oils or crystals. They

can achieve more ease in body and mind and perhaps do it without medications.” The yoga classes at the studio are varied from Yoga Basis to PiYo, a combination of pilates, and yoga. Each type is offered at easy, moderate and challenging levels. One variation is Hatha Yoga which features flowing movements and poses. It is available at different times for all stages of an individual’s yoga practice, including seniors. Another option is chanting Maha Myrityunjaya which is a calming session that brings participants together to put good vibrations out into the world and thus has the intention of both self and world healing. Also included in the studio’s offerings are classes that feature asanas (postures), vinyasa (flow), pranayama (focused breathing). “Since we have several teachers, we have lots of different styles of yoga available,” Webb says. “In the future, we hope to offer classes and workshops for children. Our easy sessions can be modified for participation while sitting in a chair. This is great for people who can’t get on the floor if they have had recent knee or hip replacements as well as for seniors.” A unique feature of The Yoga Spot is private Soul Sessions which educate individuals on different techniques. Designed to ease people’s souls, there are many to choose from. Options include reiki, which is energy movement to heal body and mind, breath training, to relieve anxiety and stress and essential oils and crystals, to enhance well-being.

“The Soul Sessions instruct people on practices outside of yoga but within holistic health,” Webb adds. “The goal is to feel grounded, open your heart and change your attitude. Individual health coaching is offered as well and includes nutrition counseling and even advice for grocery shopping for people who might be pre-diabetic.” From time to time, The Yoga Spot at Geist provides workshops to explore a topic in greater detail. Themes for these sessions are subjects such as meditation, breathing techniques and maintaining energy levels. Past workshops have included gratitude practices and an afternoon of restorative poses.

“The momentum of The Yoga Spot at Geist is slowly building,” Webb says. “We want to stand out by not having a cookie-cutter approach for each person. Our emphasis is on what we can do for each individual. We offer a lot of different yoga styles so someone can find the best options that work for them.”

INAUGURAL GEIST UPPER FALL CREEK ALLIANCE BLACK FRIDAY TOY DRIVE BASS TOURNAMENT RAISES NEARLY 500 TOYS Story & Photography Provided

The Geist Upper Fall Creek Alliance, with the support of the GLC Steering Committee, recently hosted its inaugural Toy Drive Bass Lake Tournament at Geist Reservoir on Black Friday. The drive took donations for new toys for both boys and girls. The group asked the community to drop off toy donations during the tournament in the toy drive box. The event raised a total of 477 toys and $2,100 total in cash and checks was also donated. Scott Delph, who helped organize the event, says thanks are in order for everyone who came out and supported, including local businesses like Krenolies Donuts and Cabela’s for their tournament day donations, Case’s Bait and Tackle and Dave Case for his generous donation of the Waft Rod and Colts tickets, Just Add Water Boats $500 donation, care of Tim Coe, Wilson industrial Sales $500 donation, Care of Zach Goldsberry, Brian Hall personal donation of $250, and Ralph’s Muffler and Brakes Service $200 donation care of Joshua M. McDermott, and many more. “Big thanks go to Ted McClintick and Chad Jackson as well for stepping up to the plate and matching Michael Schwomeyer’s donation for a total of $200 for auction of boat No. 1 chip as well,” Delph says. “I want to give a shout out to Michael Schwomeyer for stopping by and helping to MC the event, too. I also want to thank Red DiRT Bait Company for your generous bait donation, we greatly appreciate you guys. “I can’t express enough our sincere gratitude to everyone who fished, donated before the tournament, those who stopped by during the tournament and those who showed up at weigh-in and donated,” Delph adds. “This will go a long way to help put smiles on kids’ faces Christmas morning and that’s what this was all about.” 38 / GEIST MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2020 / atGeist.com
