BONDO’S COOKIES
FORMER INDIANAPOLIS COLT TACKLES THE BAKING GAME
Writer / Renee Larr Photographer / Robby Berry
Deyshawn Bond knows a thing or two about football. The former Indianapolis Colts guard played football at Warren Central High School and the University of Cincinnati, and then in the National Football League. People might not expect
him to know a thing or two about baking. In January of 2020, Bond and his wife Ashley had a family event to attend. Bond wanted to take something made rather than purchased, so he tried his hand at baking cookies. Bond followed a recipe, but the cookies didn’t turn out as planned and TownePost.com / JANUARY 2022 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 7
didn’t make it to the family event. However, much like in football, practice made perfect. “I decided to figure out why they were such a failure, so I just kept trying,” Bond says. “Finally, in April I felt I had done enough testing that I could take them to my coworkers for them to try. They didn’t look the
best but my co-workers loved them. They kept asking me to bring in more.” In 2021 Bond decided to take his baking hobby and turn it into a full-blown side hustle. Bondo’s Cookies was born. At the University of Cincinnati, his teammates and coaches called him Bondo. “I thought naming the business Bondo’s Cookies fit perfectly,” Bond says. “Then I created the slogan ‘Let’s Bond Together,’ which made perfect sense for me. I try daily to make people feel welcomed and bring people together.” Bondo’s Cookies offers seven classic cookie flavors in addition to a rotating monthly flavor. Flavors include chocolate chip, peanut butter, white chocolate macadamia, snickerdoodle, M&M, double chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin. Customers can place their orders online Monday through Thursday for pickup at two different locations on Fridays. One location is Indy’s Kitchen, the commercial kitchen that Bond uses to bake the cookies. Bond recently partnered with Southern Roots Gift Co. in Franklin Township to help expand the business to a new area of Indianapolis.
“I TRY DAILY TO MAKE PEOPLE FEEL WELCOMED AND BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER.”
“The most consistent time I can get into the kitchen to bake is between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. on Thursday and Friday mornings,” Bond says. “I still work 40 hours a week at my fulltime job too. I can usually get about 20 to 22 dozen cookies baked in that time frame.”

Bond’s cookies are unique in a few different ways. You won’t find overly iced cookies or crazy flavor combinations. Bond wanted to stick with traditional flavors. He wants to let the taste of each cookie speak for itself. He also packages each cookie in its own wrapping within each box. Flavors can be mixed for larger quantities. “I wrap each cookie individually so that no one can reach in the box and touch all the cookies,” Bond says. “It’s more sanitary that way. I also don’t pass that cost on to my customers.”

receiving great health care coverage and great customer service,” he says.
up to those who are ready to switch over to Medicare.
Jeff Frey used to sell traditional health insurance, but with an increase of calls from clients with complaints and questions about their current health insurance plan and the constant changes, confusion about networks, monthly premiums skyrocketing and deductible amounts going up he thought, ‘there has to be another option’ for his clients. Jeff determined there really were only a couple options out there. He also realized, “You really don’t need health insurance, what you need is a way to manage and pay for your needed health care,” Jeff says.
A lot of people think they can only change plans once per year, but that’s not always true. Typically, you can call or email your current health care provider and cancel any time throughout the year, they just don’t want you to do that. Health care plans and health insurance plans generally are month to month and can be canceled throughout the year with a couple weeks advance notice.
“We have clients of all ages, married, single and families with children, and we are currently in 19 states,” Jeff says.
Ultimately, he found that medical cost sharing is safe, fast and straightforward. It’s kind of how health insurance started many, many years ago. Therefore, six years ago he launched AffordaShare. AffordaShare is not insurance but a private medical association. “Once you become a member with AffordaShare, you no longer need traditional health insurance,” Jeff says.
“At AffordaShare, we take new enrollments all year long,” Jeff says. They do, however, see an upsurge in enrollments towards the end of the year as people and small businesses are planning for the upcoming year. Fall or open enrollment is an important time for you individually and for small businesses. This is the time you are trying to assess the next 12 months of your health care cost.
“This is a great time to compare AffordaShare to your current health care plan,” Jeff adds. “If we can save you money, His wife Lisa, also works for AffordaShare still offer great health care protection and as the Operations Manager and member give you great customer service, why not do services liaison. it? If you’re not sure if AffordaShare is a good fit for you, it doesn’t hurt to check them out. You can call them up or go to the website at AffordaShare.com click on the “Get-a-Quote” tab in the upper righthand section. Just complete the info there and hit “SUBMIT.” Within 24 hours you’ll have multiple options and prices to review. “This way you can make a well-informed, thoughtful decision on what’s best for you, your business and your family,” Jeff says. Of course nothing in life is certain. The Freys know this well. A few years ago, they got a call from a young man, 28-years-old, who was inquiring about AffordaShare because his mother wouldn’t stop telling him to obtain some type of coverage. He told Jeff he was healthy, worked out, didn’t smoke, and wasn’t sure he’d ever need or use the coverage. He wanted the cheapest plan possible. Jeff set him up with the least expensive package that did not cover annual exams, dental or vision. However, if he had a major medical event, the most he would be responsible for paying was $6,000 a year. As fate would have it, this young seemingly invincible man was diagnosed with cancer six months later.
“His care and treatment extended out for almost two years, so he paid a total of only conditions. In addition, AffordaShare serves $12,000 out of almost $150,000 in medical all demographics, from younger people who expenses,” Jeff says. “He is very grateful he just got off of their parents’ plans, all the way contacted us, and so is his mom.” TownePost.com / JANUARY 2022 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 11
“THEY WEIGH THE PROS AND CONS AND, AFTER EVALUATING THE COVERAGE, TALKING WITH A LONG-TIME MEMBER AND LOOKING AT THE SAVINGS, THEY USUALLY DECIDE AFFORDASHARE IS THE BEST OPTION.” —LISA FREY
Jeff says a question he often hears is, “What am I not getting with you that I am getting with my current plan?” “We do not cover ongoing serious mental health issues like severe depression, mental health hospitalization or drug and alcohol rehabilitation,” Jeff says. “Virtually everything else is covered, including broken bones, stitches, ultrasounds, maternity, cancer, strokes, heart attacks and anything in between.” Though they don’t cover mental health rehab and therapy, they do cover office visits for things like depression, anxiety and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. “If you need to go in and consult with your doctor a couple times per year about your medication, well that is just a simple office visit and we cover that,” Jeff says. Lisa finds that potential clients will often want to talk to current members to ask how easy the process is. “We have many members that have used us for years and have experienced various medical issues,” Lisa says. “I find that they are happy to share their thoughts and experiences of having AffordaShare with new or prospective members. “They weigh the pros and cons and, after evaluating the coverage, talking with a long-time member and looking at the savings, they usually decide AffordaShare is the best option,” Lisa adds. AffordaShare is located in Fishers, Indiana. For more information call (317)-431-7541 or visit affordashare.com. 12 / GEIST MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2022 / TownePost.com

LOCAL RESIDENT OPENS FINERY BRIDAL BOUTIQUE Writer / Renee Larr Photographer / Sam Zachrich
She applied for the job and never looked back.
Shawn Jackson never thought a suit for church would lead her to a career in the bridal industry, much less her own bridal boutique. Jackson opened Finery Bridal Boutique in Fishers on November 5.
Jackson worked with women who supported and encouraged her growth in the bridal industry along the way. She moved to Atlanta where she took an entry-level corporate job. She soon realized she missed the fun of working in a bridal boutique.
“I noticed a beautiful suit in the window of a boutique called the Posie Patch in Castleton,” Jackson says. “I went back a few times to look at it and see if it ever went on sale. The last time, I noticed a sign saying ‘Now Hiring.’ ”
“I ended up getting a part-time at Bridals by Lori from ‘Say Yes to the Dress’ fame,” Jackson says. “Lori Allen inspired me to have my own boutique someday.”
14 / TownePost.com / JANUARY 2022
Finery Bridal offers dresses by up-andcoming designers, along with well-known national and international brands. Jackson is particularly proud to bring on Pantora Bridal, recently featured on the Amazon series ‘Making the Cut.’ Her dresses range in price from $500 to $2,500. “I try to find moderately-priced vendors who can get dresses to me within six months,” Jackson says. “I would rather have fewer lines where I know I can get the dresses with a certain time frame. I offer Elly Couture, Moonlight Tango, Moonlight-Val Stefani, LuceSposa, and my private label, Finery by
Shawn Marie. I design the dresses and have a production team who makes them.” The boutique is nestled in downtown Fishers. Jackson chose the area based on the lack of options for brides in Fishers. “I loved the idea of being in an old, antique house with the floors that creak and the bigger bedrooms,” Jackson says. “The bedrooms serve as bridal suites where brides can try on dresses. It just gives our store a more intimate, family-like environment.”
Jackson waited to open her dream store until her son was in college. She felt she needed to focus all her time and attention on him until he graduated from high school. “I was poised to open last year but chose not to because of COVID,” Jackson says. “During that time I was selling veils and accessories online. I was just saving up and waiting. I started hearing from brides that they were ready to start having their weddings, so I thought now was a perfect time.” Jackson is a Fishers resident who finds joy in being a small part of a bride’s big day. loves watching families come in together and bond over choosing the perfect dress. “I love building relationships with my brides and I can tell you from experience, the day they buy their dress isn’t the last time I hear from them,” Jackson says. “They will call me and update me on their life or new babies. It’s just a great feeling to help someone.” Finery Bridal Boutique is located at 11500 Lantern Road in Fishers. For more information, call 317-537-2136 or visit finerybridal.com.

Welcome to Tony’s Café NEW EATERY IS BECOMING A LOCAL FAVORITE ON 96TH STREET
Writer / Ryan Kennedy Photographer / Kerch Creative
Tony’s Café is one of the newer breakfast and lunch spots in the Geist and Fishers area. The spot opened in 2020. “We wanted to open that June but we
couldn’t,” says Owner Martin Cuautlatl, referring to pandemic-related business shutdowns and restrictions. “So we opened August 2020.” Cuautlatl knows all too well the havoc that the shutdowns have wreaked on the TownePost.com / JANUARY 2022 / 17
restaurant industry. Prior to Tony’s Café, Cuautlatl, who has worked in restaurant industry for 20 years, owned Sherwood Cafe at the intersection of 56th Street and Post Road. March 2020, as businesses all over the world were shutting
Owner Martin Cuautlatl with his wife
down, he closed the doors to that cafe indefinitely. On April 4, 2020 he announced via Facebook that those doors would never reopen. Cuautlatl says he began looking for a new location immediately.
Along with the new location came a new name. Cuautlatl says he thought about naming the place after himself, but didn’t like the sound of Martin’s Café. He decided instead to name it after his son.
He found that location on East 96th Street, just west of Fall Creek Road.
“My son, his name is Tony - Antonio in Spanish - but we shortened it to Tony because we liked the sound of it,” he says.
“I think it’s much better,” he says of the new location. “I didn’t see any breakfast place around here.” Cuautlatl says he believes the visibility of Tony’s Café, which can be seen by drivers on 96th Street, is an advantage over the old location. “At our place on Post Road, it was very hard to see us,” he says. 18 / TownePost.com / JANUARY 2022
The name reflects the familial nature of the restaurant itself. His family helps him run it, and Cuautlatl cooks the food himself. “We do breakfast, lunch, and everything is made from scratch - homemade,” he says. Breakfast at Tony’s Café is served all day. The menu features 16 different types of omelets and 17 different skillets. When
asked what his favorite item on the menu is, Cuautlatl doesn’t have to think about it. “Chicken tenders,” he says. “Hand-breaded.” Five months after Sherwood Cafe closed, Tony’s Café opened to the public. Cuautlatl says the response has been positive over the last year. In addition to new customers, regulars from Sherwood Cafe have shown up to support the new establishment, which is open for dine-in and carry-out. “The response has been very good,” Cuautlatl says. “They love it.” Tony’s Café is located at 10600 East 96th Street in Fishers. Hours of operation are Tue. through Sat. 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Sun. & Mon. 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visit tonyscafefishers. com, or give them a call at 317-731-4512, for more information including a menu page and updates on special events.

Positive Influence LAWRENCE NORTH SENIOR USES VIRAL TIKTOK ACCOUNT TO CREATE SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Writer / Renee Larr Photographer / Robby Berry
School doesn’t necessarily come easily to 17-year-old Mirajur Rahman, but a strong work ethic does. Rahman grew up in Bangladesh and immigrated to the United States in 2010 with his parents. His dedication to education includes taking detailed notes in classes and from online
sources. Rahman realized some of his friends and classmates struggled with their advanced-placement classes. “A lot of us were struggling with selfstudying during remote learning,” Rahman says. “I was looking for resources for myself but wanted to share what I found with others.” TownePost.com / JANUARY 2022 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 23
The Lawrence North High School senior took to social media to share his study tips with the masses. He realized if students at his school were struggling, others might be as well. He utilized the popular social networking service TikTok to share what he’d accumulated. “I had made some other TikTok videos in regards to the COVID vaccine,” Rahman

Rahman is currently in the process of selecting a winner for his third scholarship, Mirajur Rahman’s Satirical Experiential Essay Scholarship. Applicants wrote short essays about an experience they witnessed that made them worry for the future of humanity. They were asked to show their humorous and satirical side. As creator of the content he shares, Rahman could keep the money he’s received for his own college tuition, but he credits his parents’ sacrifices for him as inspiration to create scholarships. “They don’t really understand TikTok, but what they do know is that I’m using it to help people,” Rahman says. “I am a strong believer that if one has something to offer, it should be shared with the world. That’s why I wanted to help my peers with their educational endeavors.” Rahman is currently waiting to hear back from several colleges regarding his own applications. He hasn’t made any decisions yet but has his heart set on Princeton as his first choice, and Johns Hopkins as his

He believes both schools provide a genuinely broad-based liberal arts program that will allow him to take the humanities approach to further his studies in medical school. “Unfortunately I don’t find out until late December or March for some of these schools,” Rahman says. “I know I want to study philosophy because I think it would allow me to answer some of the questions I’ve never been able to answer before.” Rahman isn’t done with creating and funding scholarships though. He plans to continue to help other students even while in college and beyond. The big goal is to give away a full year of tuition eventually. Until then, he’ll keep giving away small scholarships to deserving students. To learn more, follow Rahman on TikTok at tiktok.com/@mirajur1. TownePost.com / JANUARY 2022 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 25

hat was born out of necessity has now blossomed into a rich and rewarding venture for Melissa Wrin. After her daughter suffered a seizure in the middle of the night, she started researching potential environmental causes for seizures. The former registered dietician already understood the importance of nutrition, but she started to look at natural applications for the body and home.
“I had always liked honeybees, but had never thought about keeping them until my husband had suggested it back in 2017,” she says. “He challenged me to start looking at ways we could utilize the beeswax.”
“I wanted to provide all-natural skin-care products that were healthier for my family,” Wrin says.
An online search gave Wrin inspiration for a multitude of products that she could make at home including lip balms, paw balms and lotion bars. Because of this novel approach, the lotion bars took off thanks to word of mouth among family and friends. Wrin began selling products on social media and setting up a table at small events.
Wrin’s husband Bill had just started to research beekeeping. It just so happens that the name Melissa means honeybee in Greek - an insect that had always captured her attention.
Sweet Melissa Honey & Hive has grown from just a backyard venture to include approximately 40 hives around central Indiana, each maintained by Bill.

“It’s a fun hobby for both of us,” Wrin says. “We love learning more about honeybees as well as educating others about them.” In fact, the couple cares for hives at some schools in Fishers, where they introduce the insect’s worth to teachers and students. They work with homeowners to keep hives on their property to help maintain the honeybee population, as well as pollenate local flower beds. In addition to the common application of honey as a natural sweetener or as a way to help battle seasonal allergies, the Wrins have come up with an all-natural beeswax product line for a variety of purposes. “Our lotion bars are very popular,” Wrin says. “Now we have bug repellent balm and itch balm. People really love our intensive heel balm, especially diabetics or anyone with dry, cracked heels.” For more info and to shop products online, visit beesweetmelissa.com.
