During the 2015-2016 school year, The Bridge Fund reports that 657 students were impacted by its efforts, and the number has doubled during the first semester of the 2016-2017 school year impacting more than 1,200 students. Opportunities made available included college tours, scholarships, state certification fees, winter coats, college application fees, medical

“Who knows which of these kids, if able to have a little bit of help, will keep them engaged with school to better their lives?” says Chad of the reasoning behind their mission. “Every kid should have access to the same opportunities as everyone else.” Chad is a Lawrence North graduate. His father, Dr. Bob McCune, a popular area veterinarian and philanthropist, supported the Lawrence Exchange and encouraged his son to get involved. “My dad was in the second graduating class of Purdue’s School of Veterinary Medicine,” shares Chad, who owns McCune Outdoor Living. “I was raised attending fundraisers to better our community, so it was only natural to continue the tradition.” While Bob was recovering from a minor medical procedure, Mark and Chad attended a football game with Chad’s cousins and held up signs that read, “Hi Bob,” which was a reference not only to his father, but to the classic “Bob Newhart Show.” “Bob told me to help Chad to do something for our area,” states Mark. “What started with a $2,500 check and the best of intentions has grown to encompass all Lawrence Township schools.”

“We have many amazing supporters and would love to see more Lawrencearea businesses get involved,” shares Chad. For 2016, The Bridge Fund outreach includes:
• 35 students at Skiles Test Elementary received funds for a robotics competition. • 325 backpacks were filled with school supplies and made available to students in need. • 39 students from Belzer Middle School received help in paying athletic fees. • 31 students from Belzer Middle School were able to visit Ball State University. • 35 calculators were purchased that will be used now by 190 students. • 600 composition notebooks were purchased for Brook Park Elementary. Another story involves eighth grader Alexis and sixth grader Kierstin, who are both visually impaired and have a strong interest in Space Camp. The Bridge Fund was able to pay for the space suits the girls needed to attend a Space Camp for the visually impaired. They joined 217 students from around the world and are now interested in working with NASA. “Some kids just need their SAT test fees paid for,” shares Mark. “Keeping these kids engaged is in all of our best interests. The Bridge Fund fills in the gaps. We strive to get kids involved and keep ownership in their education, which allows doors to open. With paying a student’s athletic fees, for instance, it’s proven that there is a direct correlation to grades during their athletic season.”
"We strive to get kids involved and keep ownership in their education, which allows doors to open."
Lawrence Township School Foundation Executive Director Cori Korn adds, “We are so thankful for the sponsors and donors of The Bridge Fund. Their generosity allows us to provide many opportunities for our students. FC PRIDE SOCCER CLUB 9220 Harrison Park Court Indianapolis, IN 46216 jamiegilbert@fcpride.org fcpride.org @fcpridesoccer
Since 2001, the FC Pride Soccer Club has served as the premier travel-level soccer club for the northeast side of Indianapolis and surrounding communities. For the 2017-2018 season and beyond, FC Pride has been the only club in the state selected to be a part of the Elite Clubs National League (ECNL), providing excellent scholarship exposure for collegiate-bound high school aged soccer players. The ECNL is proven to be the most successful platform for both college and U.S. National Team scouting, as well as offering a consistent top-level competition model. FC Pride fields teams from U7 through U19 for both boys and girls. The club also has a new recreational academy program as well as developmental programs and camps for young players ages 4 to 8. “FC Pride Soccer Club is committed to providing developmentally appropriate environments for all levels of players,” says Executive Director of Coaching Jamie Gilbert, who has been with the club for nine years.
FC PRIDE SOCCER CLUB “We have nine full-time coaches and 15 part-time coaches on staff 100 percent focused upon the development of our players, and this also enables a lot of time to focus on assisting with the college-recruiting process. We are also now using GPS tracking technology with our elite athletes which gives us qualitative data to help track performance levels.” FC Pride has a successful track record with facilitating opportunities for their players to compete at the collegiate level. “Last year 25 of our athletes earned a total of $1.25 million dollars worth of scholarships,” Gilbert says. “Currently, 21 of our players graduating in 2017 are committed, and we are not even at the end of the recruiting cycle. We have totaled $1.5 million so far.” Players have gone on to play at all NCAA division levels, with the majority of FC Pride players competing at Division 1 and Division 2 schools. Players have gone on to the University of Cincinnati, Samford, Butler, Xavier and many more college programs, with one recruit, goalkeeper and

Kayley graduated with a 4.4 GPA, so she could check a lot of the boxes.” With the club’s experienced and nationally certified professional coaching staff, FC Pride ensures that each club player receives ageappropriate instruction, quality leadership, and exposure to valuable life lessons. FC Pride Soccer Club is proud to be a leader in the soccer community. Its programs cultivate skills and talent at all levels. Based at Lawrence Soccer Complex, the club utilizes the 21-field complex for events including training, home matches and tournaments. FC Pride currently has an indoor training center as well, with plans to move to a state-of-the-art indoor/outdoor turf facility this year.

Helping Paws VOLUNTEER DOG WALKER COMMUNITY MAKES A DIFFERENCE
Writer & Photographer / Demi Lawrence
The Humane Society for Hamilton County is Indiana’s only openadmission, truly no-kill animal shelter, with close to 3,000 critters passing through each year. Founded in 1984, the Society has many to thank for the success it has had over the years, from employees to the generous donations made by Hamilton County residents. However, those truly behind the magic are the volunteers. Alan Wlasuk is a retiree who lives in Geist with his wife, Sally. When he’s not sipping on a coffee from Mama Bears or at Geist Fitness, he is at the shelter. He is there every day, walking the dogs. But he’s far from the only one, as there are about 25 volunteers who give of their time to walk the dogs.
“Retired people, what do they do when they retire?” Wlasuk asked. “I could be in my basement, building thousands of bird houses, or I could be outside and get exercise, too. It just seemed like a good fit.” As a volunteer, Wlasuk and the others walk the dogs, feed them, clean their runs and simply spend time with them. Since the Humane Society for Hamilton County is a no-kill shelter, the volunteer community occasionally raises money to train a dog that may otherwise be unadoptable. Much more than just a group of volunteers, the dog walkers enjoy each other’s company and occasionally spend time together bowling or grabbing dinner. “It’s nice to have the community, because if you’re walking around picking up poop, it's 12 degrees or 90 degrees outside, it’s so much
atGeist.com / FEBRUARY 2017 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 13
nicer if you’ve got a community of walkers, each of whom are contributing and you know they’ll contribute,” Wlasuk said. “If you have that support structure, it makes being a volunteer easier because you know you’re not the only person who cares.” The Humane Society for Hamilton County is non-profit organization always in need of donations. Animal food is always in high demand, but you can also donate old blankets and toys. For more information on how to donate, visit www. hamiltonhumane.com/how-to-help/donate. Wlasuk is also a photographer. He takes photos for the Humane Society’s website, but also takes photos for his own enjoyment. He even published a book titled “Dog Walkers: Shelter Dogs We Love,” featuring the shelter’s dogs and their stories. In addition to the book, he has a calendar featuring the same dogs that are in the book. For more information on Wlasuk’s photography and publications, he can be reached at awlasuk@gmail.com. Demi Lawrence is a senior at Hamilton Southeastern High School, as well as an editor of the school’s yearbook and newsmagazine. Demi enjoys reading, spending too much money on concerts and taking photos of her friends.

CITY OF LAWRENCE COUNCIL YEAR IN REVIEW Writer / Tom Shevlot - Lawrence Council District 5
The City of Lawrence experienced many changes in 2016. On January 1, we welcomed our new mayor, Steve Collier, who committed to the citizens of Lawrence that public safety and community improvement would be his highest priority. The City Council also saw change as it welcomed six new council members to serve our city of over 47,000 people. The city and the Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township entered in to a strategic partnership that focuses on the success of the city. “Great City, Great Schools” is a marketing campaign that prominently displays the role local city government and education plays in making Lawrence a welcoming and thriving community. Over the holiday season, Lawrence firefighters and community volunteers helped organize a food and toy drive, helping nearly 600 needy families within our community. The street department also added a new salt truck just in time for winter. The truck comes equipped with a four-camera video system and a wet system for spreading brine to battle freezing rains. The street department has also been busy with several paving projects. Our roads and streets are in desperate need of repair. It has been several years since any significant paving project has occurred in our city. Last fall, through the hard work of the department heads and city officials, the city was awarded more than $1 million, which will go toward road projects. Work began immediately and a major portion of Boy Scout Road was resurfaced with more projects planned in 2017. The Lawrence Police Department celebrated the launch of its Police Explorer bike program. Explorer Scout Post #160 will undergo several hours of training to
be able to use various tactics on the bikes, which will be deployed during parades, walks and events where advisors deem it safe and necessary to be. Twenty Police Explorers were sworn in at an official ceremony in December 2016. The Explorers program provides students interested in law enforcement the opportunity to see how a police force works. It focuses on teaching leadership and life skills necessary to succeed in the community. The city is also looking to build a standalone police station. The police station is atGeist.com / FEBRUARY 2017 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 15
currently housed in the city government building, but the city’s growth and the needs of the department make it necessary to find a new location to meet the growing and changing needs of the city. Finally, one of the most important tasks a mayor and council have is drafting and approving the city’s operating budget. I was honored to sponsor the proposed 2017 budget, which not only balanced, but also put in place funding to restore our emergency fund, which was depleted at the end of 2015.

MR. INDIANA BASKETBALL LEADS POPULAR TEAM OF PACER GAME USHERS Writer / Matt Keating
Humes, an usher at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, is a popular presence at Indiana Pacer games. Fans love to chat with him. He’s well liked by his co-workers. Many Pacers players, Pacemates, vendors, and Pacers’ front-office personnel often stop to shake his hand, admire his rings, or listen to him tell a story. And Humes loves every minute of it. The Madison High School basketball legend, named Indiana’s Mr. Basketball in 1962 after taking Madison High School to the state
Final Four, knows how to work a crowd. He is one of a fleet of popular ushers who work Pacers games. “To me, being an usher is not work at all,” Humes said before a recent game against the Charlotte Hornets. “I love people, and I love watching the families and friends come in to have a great time. I’ve been working here as an usher for the last six years, and it’s been constant source of enjoyment for me.” When Humes was a player at Madison High School, he had 95 wins and one loss in regular-season games. He later went on to play for

the University of Evansville, where his team won NCAA College Division national championships in 1964 and 1965. He was also voted All-American. In 1991, he was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. “After college, I went on to get drafted by The Chicago Bulls, but I was the last player cut,” Humes said. “I later signed with the Indiana Pacers, but I was cut before the season began. I was hurt at first, but I wound up being all right with it later. I started teaching and coaching. I jumped right into it and have loved doing both.” He earned a master’s degree in counseling from Butler University.
“I coached at Howe High School and Shortridge High School in Indianapolis, and at the University of Indianapolis, and back at my old college, the University of Evansville,” Humes said. “After that, I also coached at Crispus Attucks High School. It was a great pleasure. I have coached for 42 years.” Humes added that his love for basketball and interacting with people in a positive way has never wavered. “Watching basketball is about as fun as it gets,” he stated. “I also like helping people here get to their seats, and help have a good time.

“THE TWO MAIN THINGS I LOVE ABOUT THIS JOB ARE THE PEOPLE AND THE EVENTS.” I'm always glad to see the other ushers doing the same thing, and I like catching up with them. Some of them have been here for a long time.” Peggy Surbey is one of them. She has been an usher since 1997. “The two main things I love about this job are the people and the events,” Surbey said. “I have been a long-time Pacers fan, and it’s great being able to go to the games for free. I like welcoming people and bring a positive part of their experience. It puts a smile on my face. I like discussing the games and the players. It’s a great place to be.” Lorris Brown, one of the ushers’ co-supervisors, said he has been an usher for 30 years. TownePost.com / FEBRUARY 2017 / INDY METRO
“I’ve been able to meet such a wide range of people,” Brown stated. “I worked at Market Square Arena, and it was a great place to gather and really get to know the players and fans. It was a real family atmosphere. It's the same here.” Dave Slipher, who worked as a teacher for 38 years, has worked as an usher since the 1960s. “I remember the night Bobby ‘Slick’ Leonard was named as head coach of the Pacers in the late ‘60s,” Slipher noted. “I have loved watching all the great coaches and players come and go through the years.”

Love is… Adoption WILL AND ADRIENNE PFAFFENBERGER’S PATH TO PARENTHOOD Writer / Kara Kavensky
Avon residents Will and Adrienne Pfaffenberger began their journey into parenthood through the traditional route and then weighed fertility options, eventually deciding on adoption as their best course of action to become parents.
“We thought it would be funny on the air to promote the Midwest fertility clinic and do a test on air,” says Will of his and Dave Smiley’s experiment. “The results came back that I was half of the problem and didn't know it.”
Both Will and Adrienne Pfaffenberger are Avon High School graduates. Adrienne is a pediatric physical therapist and Will has been part of the Smiley Morning Show on WZPL for the past six years. Both are outgoing people and, given Will’s public persona on the radio each weekday morning, being open about their fertility adventures seemed natural. Not that they had much of a choice.
Will continues sarcastically, “Luckily, I got to share my results live on air.” “We decided to be publicly open about our experience, as a lot of people go through similar issues,” says Adrienne, who started a blog documenting their journey.
INDY METRO / FEBRUARY 2017 / TownePost.com
The Pfaffenberger’s not only chose to adopt locally, but opted for an open adoption. Their process took two years. Their son Lincoln was born in 2015 and is now 17 months old.
“Fertility treatment is not a sure thing,” shares Will. “Considering the physical challenges versus the emotional ones, we opted for adoption.”
“The result is amazing,” says Adrienne. “The process of open adoption can present challenges, but we are blessed to have a wonderful relationship with the birth mother.”
“It wasn’t that important to me to personally experience pregnancy,” shares Adrienne. “I just wanted to be a mom.”
During the exploration of the potential rabbit hole of the fertility process, Adrienne and Will carefully weighed their options.
Toni Williams, fellow Smiley Morning show host, was the first of the show’s foursome to have a child and the rest of the morning crew would tease her about her adventures. Now that Dave and Will are dads, only Nikki Reed remains without children.
“When Will and Dave became dads, I was like ‘Ha! It’s not so funny now, is it?’” jokes Toni, whose son Lucas is a personality on their show thanks to Toni’s recordings of him. “It will be a sad day when we have to fire Lucas,” jokes Will. “Noah, Smiley’s son, is up and coming. Noah is now 2 and very verbal.” The Smiley Morning Show has been ranked number one all but one month over the past year. “With the show, we create a product that people engage with. We don’t spend a lot of time prepping, but we all come to the table with our own strengths and we know how to make something out of nothing,” notes Will. “We are fortunate to be supported by management that supports our creativity and allows us to be autonomous.” Will and Adrienne have been married for 10 years. Both are creative. In addition to being a physical therapist, Adrienne is also a professional photographer. Adrienne received her undergraduate degree from Ball State and earned her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of Indianapolis. Will graduated from DePauw with degrees in communications, media, and theater, and even had an internship with The Bob and Tom Show. Tom Griswold paid Will directly to be an introductory producer. “It was a great experience. I got to work with their national guest booking agent, I wrote bits, went to writer’s meetings, and got to do characters,” shares Will, who is mainly known for the Joe Johnson memory bit. “I am grateful for that experience, as I was given the opportunity to be creative beyond an internship.”
Are you 65 or older and worried about your memory?
Will’s creativity is mainly expressed through comedy. He studied improv in Chicago, founded "Three Dollar Bill Comedy”, which wrote several shows for The Indy Fringe Festival. Will’s other passion is soccer, and his second fulltime job is that of Soccer Director at United Soccer Alliance of Indiana, one of the largest youth soccer clubs in the state.

HEALTHY365
A VIVACIOUS COMMUNITY MOVEMENT WITH MOMENTUM
Writer / Janet Striebel
A new nonprofit enterprise called healthy365 sprouted six months ago and its mission is about promoting health, happiness and wholeness in Hancock County. Key hands behind healthy365 have already partnered with community leaders to organize the annual Hancock Flat 50 Bicycle Ride and earn the Active Living Workshop grant awarded by the Indiana State Department of Health and Health by Design initiative. Hancock and Delaware were the only two counties in Indiana to be recognized as “Indiana Healthy Communities” by the Wellness Council of Indiana (www.wellnessindiana.org).
The award ceremony took place at the 2016 Indiana Health and Wellness Summit September 21 and 22 in downtown Indianapolis. “The healthy365 community movement has good momentum in Hancock County,” says Danielle Daugherty, Healthy Community Coordinator at Hancock Regional Health. “With a strong foundation, its focus is on health instead of healthcare and wellness instead of illness.” Its top four health concerns are mental health, obesity/nutrition, prescription/illegal drug abuse and tobacco and nicotine use. The three main branches for addressing team goals and strategies include Healthier Choices, Mental Fitness and Workplace Wellness, all of which are driven by dedicated volunteers.

"WITH THE RIPPLE EFFECT, WE’RE CONFIDENT THAT WE’LL CONTINUE TO GROW AND MOVE FORWARD.”
“With our efforts we’re trying to connect resources together so we don’t operate in silos,” says Kathy Locke, team leader for Healthier Choices. “We’re trying to unite health initiatives by organizing festivals, 5Ks and other forms of health awareness.” In August 2015, Steve Long, CEO of Hancock Health, conducted the first healthy365 meeting where questions were raised about the mysterious longevity and vitality of people living within the five Blue Zones ™ (www.bluezones.com). In these areas, people are healthier and living longer than anywhere else in the world, without chronic illnesses. But how and why? “In response to this meeting we knew we would have to increase non-smoking rates, access to nutritious food, mental fitness services such as support groups and access to active living such as walking, running, and biking,” says Daugherty, whom Hancock Health hired in January 2016. The movement healthy365 is designed to drive policy, systems, and environmental change to accomplish these tasks. Her mission is to focus on community wellness by promoting healthy food and exercise choices, improving access to healthcare and supporting workplace wellness programs, while connecting people to the vast nonprofit network, healthy365.
Daugherty acts as a liaison between Hancock Health and the generous volunteers of this initiative. Volunteers connect with areas in the community to support healthier living by partnering with: •G rocery stores —to substitute healthier choices in checkout lanes (i.e. fruits and water instead of candy and soft drinks) • Restaurants — to offer sub-menus featuring healthier options • S chools — to implement the 5-2-1-0 guidelines within the school environment (www.healthynh.com/5-2-1-0healthy-nh.html) and public/shared use guidelines for recreational facilities, (i.e. fieldhouse usage, public swimming opportunities, etc.) •C hurches — to appoint a contact person who can provide two-way communication between the hospital and members of the congregation “Some people who have just had an operation and have come home from the hospital may not be able to pay their bill, or maybe they live by themselves and need help with meals,” says Locke.
26 / GEIST MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2017 / atGeist.com
“It’s all about staying in the loop and maintaining two-way communication to offer support.” Locke invites the community to share ideas and successes about healthier living in the workplace and/or family. “If you have an idea, then we want to know about it. Contact ddaugherty2@hancockregional.org to share your thoughts about healthy living.” Since 1951, Hancock Regional Hospital has been a vital community hub in the Hancock County community, providing medical care, employment for close to 900 healthcare professionals, and a history of philanthropy. “In addition to subsidizing Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements, we write off millions of dollars each year for charity care,” says Daugherty. “With healthy365 in motion, we can measure engagement, but we can’t necessarily measure influence at this time. We can, however, approximate impact. Though we have 45 volunteers that we see face to face at monthly meetings, we have over 600 ambassadors who we communicate with digitally and in the workplace. There are over 5,000 employees within our circles of influence. With the ripple effect, we’re confident that we’ll continue to grow and move forward.”
Kathy Locke, team leader for Healthier Choices

Last year I had wonderful success with purple kohlrabi. It taste like potatoes to me. I also had great success with many herbs. However, most of these I do not start from seed. I love to cook with herbs, and I feel this is a very good place for any beginning gardener to try their hand at growing something beautiful and edible. Herbs are very forgiving. They like a tough life. Most are originally from the Mediterranean region where the soil is pretty brutal. Oregano, thyme, basil and rosemary are good starters, and they are easy to use in pasta and on pizza. These, along with parsley, chives and cilantro are a must. Cilantro has a split personality; if you let it grow tall in the center and begin to flower it decides to turn into coriander. I find that utterly perplexing. The seed of coriander is cilantro. Who knew? Most importantly, make sure you buy a beautiful gardening journal to take notes. I love looking back over my notes — favorite things to jot down for me are the nature sightings. In January I saw a bee, his survival skills tickled me so much I laughed until lunchtime. Nature has taught me how to survive, and most importantly, she has taught me how to live a “Beautiful Life.” A lifelong Hoosier girl, Carrie Petty is a TV Personality, Master Gardener, Inspirational Public Speaker and Armature Naturalist. NEW COMIC CON MINISERIES FEATURES LOCAL ACTOR
Writer / Matt Keating
Indianapolis Native Vincent Ventresca, a 1984 Chatard High School graduate, has a role in a new web miniseries called “Kings of Con.” Vestresca plays Officer Billings in the series, which is billed as a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes shenanigans at fan conventions. “Kings of Con” has been heavily promoted by Comic Con HQ and has received high praise from television critics. “It’s the first new scripted series on the Comic Con streaming service,” Ventresca said. “It's already received a lot of attention. It’s very exciting. There are so many networks, channels and streaming services to choose from these days. It opens things wide up. It's creatively exploding.” Ventresca, who was born in Indianapolis, is the youngest of 11
children and grew up in the Broad Ripple area. He graduated from Indiana University with a double major in theater and psychology. Ventresca still has family members in Indianapolis but currently lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Dianne, an eighth-grade teacher, and his children, Benjamin and Renee. “It's really fun being a parent,” Ventresca said. “I love spending time with my family and getting involved in my son’s year-round soccer.” He also loves acting and writing. On the acting front, Ventresca starred as Darian Fawkes on the Sci-Fi Network’s “The Invisible Man,” a popular series that still has a strong following today. “I had an excellent time on that series,” he said. “It was work, but also very collaborative and a lot of fun. It can be a tough business, but you never know what will happen.” James Roday, star of the long-running USA comedy-mystery series
TownePost.com / FEBRUARY 2017 / INDY METRO
“Psych,” told Ventresca he was ready to give up acting and screen writing and move back home to Texas, when he landed the lead role in “Psych,” which lasted eight seasons. “I love the excitement of knowing you just have to hang in there and work toward what you want to do,” Ventresca said. “You may have to wait, but it’s worth the hard work and auditions.” Ventresca is still recognized for his role as Fun Bobby, who dated Courtney Cox’s Monica Geller, on the long-running hit series “Friends.” He also was a regular on ABC’s “Complete Savages” and the NBC sitcom “Boston Common.” Over the last several years, Ventresca has built up a remarkable resume. He guest starred recently on the television series “Rizoli & Isles,” “Nashville,” and “Wicked City.” He has also guest starred on “CSI,” “CSI: New York,” “Psych,” “Monk,” “Nikita,” “Hot in Cleveland,” “The Mentalist,” “Without a Trace,” “In Plain Sight,” “CSI: Miami,” “Las Vegas,” “Cold Case,” “Diagnosis Murder,” “Empty Nest,” and “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.” He has also been in several movies, including “Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion,” “Saving Private Ryan,” “The Thin Pink Line,” “Can’t Stop Dancing,” “The Learning Curve,” “Purgatory Flats,” “Madison,” “Answers to Nothing,” and ”Break Point.” He is in another film, “Tao of Surfing,” which is in post production. “I've been lucky to work as an actor, and I also love to write,” Ventresca said. “I’ve read so many scripts that it made me want to try to figure out how to tell a story.” Ventresca wrote a script for a television pilot called “Adults,” which he says is a “coming of middle age” story. He had a reading of the script with several friends, including Nathan Fillion, star of the ABC television series, “Castle,” which ran for eight seasons on ABC. “We moved the chairs around the house and had a big table reading of the script,” Ventresca said. “It went very well. I was able to get a lot of great feedback. There is an audience out there for stories about middle age people and their struggles and positive experiences.” In 2009, Ventresca shot a pilot, “Stuck,” that he co-wrote, coproduced, and co-starred in with Eric Palladino. Maura Tierney, Eric McCormick and Dean Cain were also in it. He enjoyed the writing experience so much he is also working on other scripts. “One of the things I love about writing is the freedom,” Ventresca said. “It’s just you. There is no one telling you what to do. You aren't being directed. Acting is a lot of fun and very rewarding, but
writing is also creatively exciting. I also like the power of not asking for permission that writing allows, and acting doesn’t. “With acting, you have to ask for permission by auditioning. And then you get the part or you don't. With writing, you can just wake up and do it. It’s just you.” Ventresca noted that people are sometimes critical of actors becoming writers. “A writer I love, Thomas Merton, talked a lot about how you have to realize what you want to say with your life. It’s the realization that you may write something that no one will ever see, but you still have to write it. It actually frees you up to write what you want to. You have to forget the results and just do it.” Merton believed writers use their imaginations as God’s way of talking to us. Merton was an American Catholic writer and mystic. A Trappist monk of the Abbey of Gethsemani, Kentucky, he was a poet, social activist, and student of comparative religion. “As I’ve grown older, I’ve been paying more attention to not worrying about the end result, and just write,” Ventresca said. “I think the death of my mother and my upbringing in Catholic schools has helped me contemplate more about what is important. I get very busy with family, auditions, and writing, but it's important to find quiet time to work on things you are passionate about.”

STAYING FIT AT GEIST THE NEW YEAR CHECKUP
Writer / Jimmy Girot III
Moving from contemplation to action is a difficult process for any objective. As 2017 begins, many people take action by taking aim at their “resolution.” Inevitably, many of these resolutions fade away, especially those involving fitness. Maintenance, the stage of sustainability after initial action, proves to be challenging for millions of people each January. The “blank slate” motivation people feel when a new year begins can be powerful; however, it is only effective when paired with discipline. To learn more about achieving this sustainability and effectiveness within a fitness program, I spoke to Mike Lewkowicz of 1 & Only Fitness. What are the biggest mistakes you see people make when starting a fitness regimen? “The biggest mistake I have noticed in my 10plus years of training is not having specific, measurable goals set out for the client and no plan of attack to reach those goals.”
Do you have any training options for someone who may be intimidated by the traditional gym atmosphere? “Yes, our atmosphere is very different than the traditional "big box” gyms. We have a personalized approach with each client, including a body composition test, movement screen, nutrition analysis and guidance. We set specific goals and care about our clients. You're not just a number at 1 & Only Fitness.”
Do you have a certain approach or philosophy to nutrition? “Yes, limiting grains and processed sugars in your lifestyle is effective. We avoid fake sweeteners and making sure you’re getting the right amount of ‘good fats’ daily. Make sure to get your water in too.”
Are there certain things people should look for when hiring a trainer or considering a gym? “Making sure you can connect with the person, even after the first session, is important. Observe how they work with other clients before making a hire, so you can see if this person is the right fit for you.”

From setting budgets to checking all production needs before a show, Gerardi has done it all when it comes to entertainment, including working with some big names in music. “I’ve worked hand-in-hand with some popular bands: The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, AC/DC, Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, Phish, Metallica, Billy Joel, Elton John and Reba McEntire just to name a few,” he laughs. Gerardi recently booked Aretha Franklin for a local event, and he has another upcoming big show with Jay Leno downtown in March.
“It is a constant balance between budgets and musical tastes with my clients,” Gerardi says. “It’s great when it really works.” Gerardi was 15 when he caught the so-called “booking/producing bug” after attending his first concert in Columbus, Ohio. “It was Edgar Winter,” he recalls, “and I knew by the end of the show what I wanted to do.”
show, along with Frank Sinatra and Grateful Dead were probably the most important shows at the venue in those days. It was Sandi starting it all off, Sinatra lent it local credibility and Grateful Dead let us show that we were really good at what we did.” Grateful Dead was Deer Creek’s first sold out show with 18,000 fans in attendance.
Sunshine Promotions was sold in 1999 and today Gerardi books talent for a variety of venues and for corporate and other special events. In his free time he enjoys working “It’s the most thankless entry job, but probably out — he’s lost 44 pounds since last summer — and is committed to volunteering for one of the most important jobs,” he laughs. the annual Leukemia Lymphoma Society’s Man and Woman of the Year campaign In the early ’80s he started working for Dave Lucas and Steve Sybesma at Sunshine which kicks off in March. Having lost two lifelong best friends/cousins, Dick and Promotions, a regional concert promoter for Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee, Kentucky and, Mike Gerardi, to rare forms of leukemia, he has worked to raise money for LLS for the on some occasions, San Juan, Puerto Rico. past 18 years. RAINBOW STATION IN FISHERS OFFERS EXCELLENCE IN EARLY EDUCATION Writer / Matt Keating
The attention to detail and excellence at Rainbow Station, a premier provider of early education, school age recreation, emergency backup care and leadership development, can be seen everywhere. That’s exactly what owners Steve and Debbie Ramos want. “We saw a need in the community and we wanted our school to differentiate from the others,” said Steve. “We looked at a lot of franchises and wanted one that would provide high standards of excellence in pre-school education. Rainbow Station achieves those standards, our vision is to be the standard of excellence in early education, school age recreation and mildly ill care. “Rainbow Station is a family franchise, we are small-town family people that will foster a loving, caring environment for children, families, staff and the community,” Steve added. Steve and Debbie have partnered with Becky and Jay Brammer to help make this dream come true. The Brammers run a 60-person team called Mission Possible providing funding for multiple sclerosis research. “This fulfills one of my life’s
ambitions,” says Becky. Jay also runs Crown Management LLC.
a School Board Chair of a K-8 elementary school in Indianapolis.
Rainbow Station, founded in 1989 by registered pediatric nurse Gail W. Johnson, now has 14 locations in North Carolina, Virginia, Texas, China, and now Indiana. The Fishers location will employ up to 40 full- and part-time employees. Its mission statement is that teachers and nurses partner with parents to promote the success of each child. Rainbow Station promotes strong leadership in its children as well as staff.
Debbie, who worked as a second-grade teacher at Geist Elementary School for 14 years, is an award-winning teacher. She received District Teacher of the Year awards in Indiana, Illinois and Minnesota. She also graduated from the Teacher Leadership Academy. She has served as a committee member of the Hamilton Southeastern Corporation’s Balanced Literacy Committee and Young Hoosier Book Award Committee, as well as many others. “I fell in love with the franchise, and its strong, engaging curriculum,” Debbie said. “Parents live such hectic lives, and Rainbow Station serves families by accommodating their schedules and offering high-quality education with a strong curriculum.”
“We want to not only foster the love of learning, but also prepare our students with critical problem-solving and creativity to prepare them for the future. We want to be the best. We will lead in excellence in early education with our unique curriculum to help our students learn early, live well, and lead,” said Debbie.
Steve and Debbie were fortunate to have Director of Operations Shannon Foster move to Fishers. Shannon was the director Steve spent several years as an executive at Rainbow Station’s flagship preschool at the IBM Corporation, working globally in Richmond, Virginia. Shannon noted, while living in Illinois, Germany and “Rainbow Station is among the few Minnesota, before he settled in Indiana in franchises to achieve national accreditation 1993. He later became a non-profit CEO focused on higher education at The National based on stringent standards set by The National Association for the Education Society of Hispanic MBAs (the largest of Young Children and the National After Hispanic professional society). He is also
School Association.” “Rainbow Station empowers children to discover their individual gifts and talents, so they will learn more and become strong leaders. We will also achieve the 4 Star – Paths to Quality rating from the State of Indiana. Indiana’s highest rating,” Steve said. Rainbow Station is the first to provide care for mildly ill children. According to Emily Knotts, a former neonatal intensive care unit nurse at St. Vincent Hospital, “The Get Well Place is a unique addition to early childhood education. We offer the services of a pediatric RN not only to the enrolled children of Rainbow Station, but to our community children, as well. We are available to our enrolled students throughout the day to attend to their bumps, bruises, and any other illness as they arise. For our community children, we offer a safe nurturing environment for mildly ill children that are excluded from school due to mild illness. The Get Well Place allows parents to limit time missed from work with the comfort of knowing that their ill child is receiving individualized and loving care from an RN. Rainbow Station strives to accommodate and make each child successful, even when faced with illness.” During a tour of the school, Steve highlighted a wide variety of rooms. A Nursery School is available for infants six weeks old to children 2 years of age. We offer a nationally accredited nursery school program specifically designed for the unique needs of very young children. Rainbow Station’s teachers and staff spend every day opening new worlds of discovery for each child in a safe, nurturing and creative environment, full of exposure to language, music, art, and sensory stimulation. A preschool for children ages 3 to 5 is where Rainbow Station’s staff provide a nationally recognized preschool program where students acquire academic readiness skills through play. It involves learning centers with math, science, dramatic play, music, art, manipulatives, and technology. Steve stressed that security measures at Rainbow Station will go above and beyond Rainbow Station Square is a large inside play to ensure that children and staff are safe. “We always want to stress safety,” Steve said. area that provides an engaging after-school “Parents use a thumbprint to enter and drop experience, in which children participate off their child at the front entrance.
