MVHS BECOMES ONE OF EIGHT INDIANA HIGH SCHOOLS TO INTRODUCE NEW AVIATION COURSE
Photography Provided by Mt. Vernon School Corporation
Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) recently became part of an elite group of eight high schools and seven districts in Indiana that offer a college aviation course. MVHS began a collaboration with Ivy Tech Community College to implement an aviation course for juniors and seniors this 2018-2019 school year. The key coordinators who worked on putting this course into practice were the Director of Secondary Education Mr. Scott Shipley, Mt. Vernon High School Principal Mr. Greg Roach, Ivy Tech Aviation Program Chair Mr. Matt Medley and the Ivy Tech Aviation Course Instructor Mr. Jack Morton. “We are truly pleased that the partnership with Ivy Tech and the Indianapolis Airport Authority came to fruition,” Shipley says. “This program has been long in the making and will offer students an incredible opportunity to leave high school with credits toward a degree in aviation.” The year-round course is a combination of two classes: AVIT 111 and AVIT 120. The AVIT 111 course is essentially an overview of the aviation industry, which is much broader than piloting. Students experience the airport environment, listen to speakers from the aviation industry and learn about the types of career opportunities in the industry. The AVIT 120 course is the course taught to students which teaches them the
information they need to know in order to pass the Federal Aviation Administration’s pilot exam. These aviation introduction courses are popular for those students who are interested in pursuing flight training in the future. The opportunity to take this course was also opened up to upperclassmen at GreenfieldCentral High School. Students from Greenfield Central travel to Mt. Vernon High School every morning in order to participate in the course, which is taught from 9:00-10:45 a.m. Jack Morton, the course instructor, also makes the journey every day in order to share his knowledge with the students. Morton has been a pilot for more than 25 years and has been teaching people to fly for 10 years. Six students from Greenfield-Central and five students from Mt. Vernon make up the aviation class for the 2018-2019 school year. Morton says he is “thrilled” with the group of students who chose to explore the course. He says more is expected of them since they are taking a college course, but they are an engaging and extremely motivated group of students. “I am hopeful the program grows through the years and continues to foster students’ passion for a career in aviation,” Roach says. “This partnership gives students exposure to aviation before choosing their college path. Aerospace is an industry with great potential for a long-term, rewarding career atGeist.com / FEBRUARY 2019 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 7
for our students.” The aviation industry is expected to see a major decrease in pilots in the coming years, given that the required retirement age for an airline pilot is 65 years old. Consequently, the demand for pilots is growing, causing educators to encourage students who are interested in aviation to pursue it for his or her career. In addition to the demand for pilots, the financial incentive for becoming a pilot or an aviation mechanic is huge, with the average salary of an Indiana pilot being $115,000. The cost to the students is $25 per credit hour, which is substantially less than a college student would pay for the same courses. This discounted rate can be attributed to Morton, who placed a call to the Indianapolis Airport Authority and shared the opportunity to support aviation education for high school students. The Indianapolis Airport Authority agreed to underwrite the high school students’ textbook costs for this course. A hope that is shared among all of the coordinators of this course is that aviation will be pursued long-term at Mt. Vernon High School and the student interest will continue to climb. Medley says that he wants the program to reach the maximum of 25 students. “I think we can obtain that growth,” Medley says.
Invest In Your Nest A GEIST HOME MAKEOVER
Writer & Photographer / Pat Carlini
We hear a lot about home makeover projects such as kitchen remodels and master bath transformations. But how about the exterior of your home? A good exterior transformation can give your home a serious boost in curb appeal. An exterior update can also be a less costly alternative to moving and buying or building a brand new home. That’s how Tonia and Brett Lotz felt when they discussed moving to a new neighborhood and buying a new home a couple of years ago. They built their Geist home in 2003 and were ready for some change. But considering they still liked the neighborhood and the school system for their two kids, they decided to stay in their
existing home and make a few changes, inside and out. The “few” changes began inside new paint, some new furniture and new flooring throughout the main level of the home. They also felt the Kitchen needed a facelift, too. So they called their favorite painter they’ve used on other projects, Chris Allison of Allison Painting. Chris painted the wood cabinets in a white lacquer and new Cambria countertops were brought in. Chris also built a new island for the kitchen and finished it in black, giving this more-than-a-decade-old kitchen a whole new look.
red brick home did look a little dated, too. They thought perhaps updating the exterior would make the home look as new as its transformed interior. Still, painting the exterior of their home certainly sounded like a big deal and they weren’t sure where to begin picking colors.
“One thing certainly leads to another when you are remodeling,” Tonia says.
Tonia, an event planner and Owner of “TL Event Servicez LLC” says she watched a lot of HGTV and looked at photos on HOUZZ to get her inspiration and ideas for their home. She claims she and husband Brett, a Senior Account Manager at Phillips Healthcare, found the most help at the nearby Sherwin-Williams paint store with its in-home color consultation service.
Then as the inside of their home was rapidly changing, they realized the exterior of their

of the home, which was a huge help,” Tonia says. “Then they picked the blue shade for the front door. I never would have thought of that one.” Chris Allison returned to paint the outside of the home which was done in functional Gray, Backdrop and Reserved White with a Rainstorm blue front door. New light fixtures, updated shutters, window boxes and new aluminum awnings added the perfect finishing touches to the home’s grand exterior makeover. The smiling couple says they are happy with their decision to stay and transform their home. “And to think this all started with a TV,” laughs Brett pointing to the flat screen TV over a brand new console in the family room. “Toni came home one day and said we should get a new TV and get rid of the outdated entertainment center in the family room.

I thought, ‘this is great! I’m in,’” he says.

and the City of Lawrence is in the beginnings of its planning and public input stage as they develop a master plan for the Cultural Campus at Fort Harrison. There will be community engagement and public input opportunities come spring. There will also be upcoming information sessions held for the public at the Theater at the Fort and the Sterrett Center so the master plan can reflect the interests of the Lawrence community.
concept more than 10 years in the making is quickly becoming a reality for the City of Lawrence. In December, it was officially announced that the city had received a $5,851,969 grant as part of Lilly Endowment Inc.’s Strengthening Indianapolis Through Arts and Cultural Innovation initiative. Lawrence was one of just 18 organizations to receive the competitive grant. For the grant, the City of Lawrence proposed a Fort Harrison Cultural Campus concept to bolster the arts
scene in the city and offer a unique downtown destination spot. The grant is a dream come true for Arts for Lawrence Executive Director Judy Byron, who created the proposal and delivered the pitch to Lilly Endowment. “We’d been thinking about this idea for more than 10 years now,” Byron says. “We gathered a planning committee to help tell the story of what we would like this arts area to look like. I’ve been on a soapbox for years talking about the arts as an economic development tool, and that is exactly what this will be. We’ve seen it in other
places all around Indianapolis. Not only does it develop a place where people want to go see a show or get involved with an art class, but then restaurants start popping up around that and, the next thing you know, you have a really vibrant downtown. That is what this is going to do for the City of Lawrence’s new downtown.” So, what all does the Cultural Campus entail and what will it look like? The plan is broken down into five phases, according to Byron, and the recent Lilly Endowment grant will fund all five phases. Currently, Arts for Lawrence

Phase 1 of the Cultural Campus plan involves Theater at the Fort and Sterrett Center improvements, accounting for roughly $440,636 of the grant. The historic Theater at the Fort has long needed upgrades to the facility and will see cosmetic updates and repairs to the interior and exterior through Phase 1. During Phase 1, a niche will also be installed in the front lobby wall of the theater with new art installation of fused glass. The fused glass artwork will be an interactive community project. Phase 2 is the Theater Addition to the rear of the theater, a projected $1,031,847 of the grant. This, Byron says, will facilitate ADA access to rehearsal and classroom spaces above the backstage dressing rooms. The addition will also provide public restrooms for those utilizing the Cultural Plaza (Phase 4 of the project). This will also alleviate the need for port-o-potties during outdoor events. An exciting feature of the addition will be a customized BEAM game by EyeClick in the lobby. BEAM is a virtual playground that uses a projection system to transform floors, walls and
Fridays at the Fort outdoor concert series and the festivals held in Lawrence throughout the year. Ideally, Byron adds, hardscape for seating areas and a lawn for audiences would be added as well. Daily Tous Les Jours, an art and design studio, will also be designing an all-age playground for the Cultural Plaza. More details will come in the future on the playground, but it will be open to the public and offer many interactive activities. more into fun, interactive displays. “The renovation to the theater will include a lot of paint and flooring,” Byron adds. “We are also missing a ceiling in our front lobby, and we have doors that don’t close properly. It is a really old building that has a lot of little things we would like fixed. There will be a new stage floor and tech improvements as well. A big part of this Phase 1 renovation is the addition of movie theater capabilities for us, too. We hope to be offering free movies for the community later this year. That will be a great way for us to offer free programming while the construction is going on. Even with the stage closed during that construction, we could still show free movies. “The Sterrett Center will get technical improvements so it can host arts programming as well. It will have stage lighting, a sound system and more upgrades to be able to have high-level programming in there.” Phase 3 of the project involves
the creation of a Visual Arts Center, about $777,107 of the grant. According to Byron, the old Communications building has been donated by the Fort Harrison Reuse Authority and will be relocated onto the Cultural Campus and repurposed into the Visual Arts Center. In the past, Arts for Lawrence has used movable gallery walls on the theater stage for art exhibits. This has limited art exhibitions at the Theater at the Fort to a week or even just a day or two because the exhibits need to be moved when it is showtime on the stage. The new Visual Arts Center will provide a permanent gallery space for the community that will showcase local artists’ works. The center will also offer art classes and workshops for the public.
desperately needed gallery space for a while now. Our resident artist, Gary Schmitt, will be our first curated artist in the new building. It is a winwin for everybody.” Phase 4 is the creation of the Cultural Plaza — the biggest part of the Cultural Campus project. About $2.8M of the Lilly Endowment grant has been allocated for Phase 4 of the project, which Byron calls the “glue” of the Cultural Campus. The Cultural Plaza is still in the early concept stages. Byron says that Arts for Lawrence has proposed a small amphitheater as part of the plaza, though. The amphitheater would be used for Arts for Lawrence’s
“We did a lot of research before sending our proposal to Lilly and found that moving that historic communications building and renovating it is actually less expensive than building something new from scratch,” Byron says. “We have 12 / GEIST MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2019 / atGeist.com
Wrapping up the Cultural Campus project, Phase 5 will involve incorporating placemaking artwork on the campus — about $465,751 of the grant. The placemaking artwork on the Cultural Campus will include hand-carved limestone benches, virtual historical information markers through an augmented reality app, a repurposed historic bus stop as an information kiosk, sculptural bicycle racks and much more. The augmented reality app is being developed by the Schneider Corporation and will tell the history of Fort Harrison in an interactive way for the community. Lawrence Mayor Steve Collier is among those excited for the Cultural Campus. Mayor
Collier backed Byron early on with the proposal and knew it would be a boon for the City of Lawrence. “The vision for creating a cultural campus in the city has been there for a while,” Collier says. “We would always brainstorm ideas of what we could do but nothing to the extent of what Judy has with this Cultural Campus. For Lilly Endowment to recognize the City of Lawrence with this grant is a game-changer. To see Judy’s efforts be rewarded in this way is very gratifying for me and I’m sure for her, too. I’m excited. We’ve seen as much positive feedback from this announcement as anything we’ve done. This certainly puts us in a position to take our place as one of the up-and-coming cities in Central Indiana.” “This Cultural Campus will be a place where everyone can feel welcome and can come for camaraderie, to celebrate, to be entertained and have a good time,” Byron adds. “It will also bring visitors into our city and boost our economy. What excites me the most is public art that engages the community, and we will have a lot of that in this project. I would tell the community too, that even though it sounds like we have this all set in stone, we still want to hear from you. This is for you.” For more information on the Cultural Campus, visit artsforlawrence.org. ince the 1980s, Albert “Al” Gooden has been accumulating an impressively long list of successes as a high school boys basketball coach here in Indiana, grabbing 10 sectional titles, six regional titles and a state championship in 2001. Such achievements surely speak to his personal systems and strategies out on the hardwood, but Gooden, who currently coaches varsity ball at Lawrence Central, remains humble and insists that much of the credit for his long-term success belongs to the many kids he’s coached along the way. “My kids were always motivated, and they were willing to accept my system and me as a coach,” Gooden says. “They’ve always done what I asked them to do and played hard.” Not unlike many athletic coaches, Gooden’s coaching career came after a successful run as a player. After graduating from Wayne High School in his native Fort Wayne, the
6’5” Gooden played ball from 1977 through 1981 at Ball State, helping the Cardinals to their first NCAA Division I Tournament appearance in 1981 as a 12 seed. He was inducted into the school’s Athletics Hall of Fame 10 years later.
“I helped out at a camp after my freshman year, doing some different drills and things, and that really helped make up my mind that I wanted to be a coach somewhere,” he recalls. “I knew that I wanted to pursue the coaching role, even though I loved playing.”
Gooden took on his first varsity coaching Not long after his college career began, Gooden realized coaching would likely be in position at Heritage High School in 1988 and says a major personal challenge early on his future.

in his career was identifying each of his player’s strengths and weaknesses and figuring out the best collective strategy based on those attributes. “Separating what I did as a player from what the kids could do as players was tough,” he adds. “I had to remind myself that they’re not me, and each kid has their own individual characteristics.” Gooden’s 21-year tenure at Harding High School, which began after two seasons at Heritage and included five state championship appearances as well as a 2001 Class 2A state title, helped to cement his legacy as one of the Hoosier state’s alltime coaching greats. The winning continued when Gooden transitioned to New Haven High School in 2011, the year Harding closed its doors, and the New Haven Bulldogs went on to win sectional titles in two of Gooden’s three years there. Since 2014, Gooden has coached Lawrence Central’s varsity squad, and last November he reached 450 careers wins — a milestone that only 54 other coaches have reached in Indiana high school basketball history. Far from having allowed the prospect of such an achievement to distract him during practices and games, Gooden says his mind has always been, and will continue to be, focused on day-to-day challenges rather than career statistics.
“I JUST TRY TO BE THE BEST I CAN BE AS I GO. I THINK IF YOU STAY FOCUSED ON THE FUNDAMENTALS, LIKE DEFENSE AND REBOUNDING, YOU’RE ALWAYS GOING TO HAVE A CHANCE IN ANY SITUATION. SO I TRY TO BUILD AROUND THAT.”
“I don’t count stuff like that. I was surprised when I found out about it,” he says with a chuckle. “I just try to be the best I can be as I go. I think if you stay focused on the fundamentals, like defense and rebounding, you’re always going to have a chance in any situation. So I try to build around that.” Gooden, who was named Lawrence Central’s Coach of the Year for the 2017-2018 school year, says he has no intention of retiring any time soon as long as he remains as excited about coaching basketball as he was three decades ago. “This is the first year I’ve had a group of kids from ninth grade all the way through, and it’s been fun to see the kids develop,” says Gooden, who enjoys playing golf in his downtime as well as spending time with his wife Felicia and three children, Albert Junior, Alicia and Ashley. “The kids have adapted to what I’ve asked them to do each year. I still love doing this, and when it stops being fun I’ll be ready to get out.” 16 / GEIST MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2019 / atGeist.com

I don’t know about you, but I feel like the temperature in Indy dropped drastically this year. I was ready for the change in weather though because my chunky knit sweaters were calling my name, although I might have a different opinion as the weather gets colder. If you’re like me, you’re probably having a slightly difficult time rolling out of bed in the morning to get dressed for the day. Your warm bed probably sounds much better
than putting on your work clothes and heading out into the crisp winter morning. To give you some inspiration, I wanted to share a few winter trends that are easy to include in your wardrobe this year. 1. STATEMENT JACKETS
I have to be honest in saying that I don’t always love to feel like a marshmallow in my winter coat and driving in it is the worst. It does keep me warm, but it’s great to have some variety with statement coats. We’ve seen the teddy jacket all over Instagram and Pinterest so that’s the one FEBRUARY 2019
I’m adding to my coat closet this year. It’s soft, generally not too bulky and easy to layer. Statement coats are great for the day when you want to actually wear your coat as part of your outfit. 2. SHERPAS
Oh, they’re back! And still just as cozy. This was a trend we saw in every store last winter. It seemed like these oversized, cuddly pullovers were designed in every color, with pockets or without pockets. Sherpas are great for your weekend running around or your evening routine with your kiddos.
3. PLEATED SKIRTS
Now hear me out before you think, “no way.” Pleated skirts were seen all over the runways for winter this year. They are being styled with sweaters, band tees and moto jackets, turtlenecks and statement coats. I personally love these skirts because the length is appropriate for work or cocktail hour and the shoe possibilities are endless to complete the look. These skirts are also great for the holiday parties you have coming up. 4. OVERSIZED CARDIGANS
8. BLAZERS
Bring on the blazers because this is a wardrobe essential. I personally rock blazers with band tees, lace tanks, regular white tees or even over sweaters. You can do so much with this piece in your daily life and transition it across seasons so, for me, it’s a must. 9. PLAID
It’s the last trend I want to highlight, but probably one of the most relatable for those of us in Indy who enjoy a good sweater or
Sweater weather, cardi party, whatever term works for you, cardigans are in! It seems that the more oversized they are, the better. I personally style these chunky knits with a striped long sleeve tee underneath and my comfortable Hudson denim from Evereve. You’ll also find that I’m generally wearing a comfortable bootie of some type for a relaxed look. 5. ANIMAL PRINT
Hello zebra, leopard and snakeskin. We are seeing a little bit of everything when it comes to animal print this year. Snakeskin booties or mules have been hugely popular with cowl neck cardigans and denim. I personally own at least three leopard sweaters or cardigans and a couple of shoes in the print. It’s neutral enough to be dressy and not overstated. 6. SHADES OF BROWNS
It feels like we went back to the 70s for this color to become a trend again, but designers are eating it up. Brown is one of those colors that I like because it’s different and can be used in a variety of staple pieces. From sweaters to pants to dresses, you can find this shade in all of it. 7. SLOUCHY BOOTS
The boots I’m wearing here are some of my favorite of all time. They combine two trends with the plaid print and it’s funny how much these actually go with. Slouchy boots are great with skirts or denim. FEBRUARY 2019
cardigan layered with our favorite plaid flannel, curled up by the fire, sipping a White Russian. You can see the picture I’m painting and likely have a plaid in your closet right now. So, cheers to you, you’re on trend. Winter fashion is a great time to play with layers, new colors and even a fun print or two. If you’re wondering more about how to style these trends you can visit trendyinindy. com or head on over to Pinterest for some inspiration. Cheers to winter trends at their best!

Local Blacksmith Sharek Gadd Talks Love of a Lost Art & Participating On Discovery Channel’s Master of Arms Writer / Josh Brown . Photographer / Michael Durr
Sparks fly, quite literally, as hammer strikes metal, and the sound can be heard, echoing off in the distance — clank, clank, clank, clank. As smoke from the burning coal billows out the top of the forge, Sharek Gadd smiles, “Watch this,” he says as he begins to shape and mold the hot iron into a hook. He’s right where he wants to be. These are the sights and sounds most days for Gadd, a local blacksmith. He started the hobby more than 10 years ago when a friend gifted him the coal forge he uses today. “It’s old school,” he says. “Most people use gas forges and power hammers. I use a 6-pound or a 9-pound sledge.” The hobby has turned into a full-time passion for Gadd. FEBRUARY 2019
“I have always loved making things, even when I was a kid,” he says. “I got into metalworking more as a teenager. A friend and mentor gifted me the forge many years ago, and I’ve been doing it ever since.” Forging is a lost art. You would likely be hard pressed to find anyone else around the Hamilton County area that takes it on full time, much less with an old coal forge. Gadd, for the most part, is self-taught in forging, woodworking and metalworking, aside from a few mentors and friends along the way. Creating and forging has always been somewhat of an escape from reality for Gadd. At a young age, he lost his father and four other siblings to a hereditary form of cancer. “I didn’t know then, but it was a good way to cope,” he says. “I actually put it down for a while after my dad died, and I joined the army. When I got out in 2005, I moved here to Fishers and got back into art. It has been a healthy way to deal with those things.” Gadd creates all kinds of pieces through woodworking and forging. He enjoys making musical instruments, like banjos. But he specializes in fullyfunctioning, historic guns. “I like creating things that have a life of their own once I have finished them,” Gadd says. “I really enjoy making the historic guns. These are guns from the 17th or 18th century, and they are all handmade. All the details and pieces have to fit just right for them to fire and function properly.” Gadd’s love for historic guns has led to memberships in several shooting clubs as well. He is a member of the National Long Rifle Muzzle Loading FEBRUARY 2019
Association. That group has been around since the 20s. Each year, in the spring and fall, Gadd participates in competitions in Friendship, Indiana. Each participant in the competition brings their own, handmade guns to shoot. “The competitions are always fun,” he says. “It’s great to meet people in that community, too. There is a lot of history involved there.” Gadd also creates unique pieces for clients. Through his website or Facebook page, people sometimes reach out to him about creating certain items. He prices his work based on the time it takes for each project. The asks are sometimes interesting ones. An older lady once approached Gadd at Allisonville Nursery, Garden & Home to ask if he could make her a steel mask. He also teaches forging classes for those interested in learning how to create pieces like locks, crosses or bigger items like knives and other weapons or tools. Gadd’s forging prowess recently got him some national attention. Earlier in 2018, a friend told Gadd about a new Discovery Channel show that pitted smiths against one another in a timed competition. Gadd applied, on a whim, not really thinking too much about it. He was surprised to get a phone call a few weeks later. After several other interviews, he was one of a small group of smiths
across the country selected to participate on the new show — “Master of Arms.” Gadd was flown out to a location for about four days for filming of the show. “It was a pretty extensive interview process,” Gadd says. “So, getting selected was pretty cool. I knew going into the show, the biggest competition would be the clock. There were three competitors pitted against one another in a three to six-hour challenge. I didn’t make it too far, but it was a fun experience — exciting and stressful. The directors and staff were awesome. It was great to just see how a show is put together, too.”
I Have always loved making things, even when I was a kid.
Gadd appeared on the first episode of the show, which aired Nov. 2. He enjoyed a watch party with friends and family at Wooden Bear Brewing at Geist to celebrate. “About 50 people showed up for the watch party,” Gadd says. “It was a lot of fun. It was weird seeing myself on TV, though.” Looking back, Gadd credits his father for where he is at today with his work. “He worked hard to provide and didn’t come home till late at night,” Gadd says. “We didn’t have as much time to do stuff together. But he had noticed my hobbies. I came home from school one day and he had gotten me a set of tools, carving knives, paint brushes and things like that. He was always my biggest supporter.”

INDY’S CHOICE FOR MASTERING CHRONIC CONDITIONS & SKINCARE Easy Energy Wellness — a new stateof-the-art detox and skin care center on the south side of Indianapolis — takes a holistic approach to optimal health. It all started when owner Sandra Carrasquillo was worried about her son after he was diagnosed with chronic digestive problems. It quickly consumed all her free time as she searched the world over for the best of the best when it comes to resetting the body. Sandra and her son Levi finally decided to start Easy Energy Wellness after seeing the dramatic improvement in Levi when
they implemented a combination of detox protocols. After hundreds of hours of research and many miles of traveling, Sandra found help for her son’s major digestive issues without medication or surgery. “My research has led me to some interesting devices that have restored his energy, helped him regain lost weight and brought his blood count into the normal range,” Carrasquillo says. “I am thankful for my son’s improved health, and I hope that my quest can help improve lives through the services we offer.” FEBRUARY 2019
Easy Energy Wellness’ detox consult takes a radical approach to nutrition for people that are committed to long-term health benefits. This creates the ultimate foundation. Many of their protocols focus on the liver, which acts as the first line of defense against toxins and unhealthy habits. If this organ goes unchecked, it can lead to inflammation elsewhere in the body. Easy Energy also partners with Dr. CJ Pabla, a board certified MD and IU Med School graduate with 20 years of experience. He now practices functional medicine.
REDUCING DISCOMFORT & LOWERING STRESS Easy Energy Wellness uses five noninvasive devices to speed up the process. A local doctor told Sandra that ozone might be able to naturally suppress the underlying cause of the inflammation. This led her to eventually stumble upon the king of detoxification – the HOCATT. It uses medicinal ozone, infrared, electro frequency, essential oils, and all in a 30-minute session. It is the only one of its kind in Indiana. Have you ever thought about how circulation plays into your overall health? BEMER (Bio-Electro Magnetic Energy Regulation) and PEMF (Pulse-Electro Magnetic Field) devices will enhance general blood-flow, nutrient and oxygen delivery, and cardiac function. These devices can penetrate deep into problematic tissue and are utilized by top athletes to allow them to recover much faster. INCREASING ENERGY & IMPROVING LIVES

NEW MT. VERNON SUPERINTENDENT ANSWERS THE CALL Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger Photographer / Kerch Creative
It’s no secret that the once largely rural community of McCordsville is going through explosive growth and development. Enrollment at the community’s schools has steadily increased, and the trend reflects the growth is on pace to continue. Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation is taking a proactive approach to address the situation by naming a new superintendent who is poised to lead the district through the new era. The Board of Directors recently named Dr. Jack Parker, formerly of Center Grove Community School Corporation, as their pick for the new Superintendent. Dr. Parker earned his master’s degree in Education Administration from Butler University and a Ph.D. in Education Administration from Indiana State University.
Dr. Parker’s most recent role with Center Grove was Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning in which he served six years. In all, his 30-year history in education includes time as a Middle School Vice Principal and Principal and two years as the associate director of the Indiana Principal Leadership Academy. He also taught curriculum and school improvement as an adjunct professor at the University of Indianapolis for its master’s program. His impressive credentials caught the eye of the Board of Trustees, and when they took a closer look at Parker, they found so much more. Dr. Parker spent plenty of time in the trenches as an educator, kicking off his career in 1989 as a band teacher. Dr. Parker’s connection to the classrooms sets him apart from other leaders. Even though it’s been a while since he’s been in a teaching role, he makes it a priority to maintain his connection to the classrooms atGeist.com / FEBRUARY 2019 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 33
and stay in touch with the issues and challenges facing teachers and students. He spent time this past year teaching in a Kindergarten classroom. “I still want to interact with students and teachers,” he says. “I love what I do. Teaching is at my core. I was put on this earth to teach others to learn and grow. Even though my job doesn’t give me the opportunity to have direct daily interaction in the classrooms, I can stay connected by visiting them regularly and I can positively impact what happens there.” Parker made a strong impact throughout his tenure at Center Grove. He was named the 2013 and 2009 District 9 Middle School Principal of the Year, leading the school to be the state’s first to achieve a “Highly Functional” rating on all seven standards assessed by AdvancED. Under his leadership, the district’s ISTEP ranking
and Dr. Parker is the icing on the cake,” she says. “He’s a true team player who always collaborates with staff and the community. He’s a leader who teachers can look up to for guidance and as a mentor.” Dr. Parker is looking forward to moving to a new community, and he’s anxious to face the district’s challenges head-on. Although a mid-year start seems unconventional, Parker is glad of the timeline.
improved from No. 40 in the state in 2014 As fate would have it, he got the call while to No. 11 in 2017, and the school received a on vacation in Ireland. It was the day after National Blue Ribbon nomination. Thanksgiving when he got the call. As impressed as the School Board was with his experience, their priority was to choose a leader who was the answer to the elephant in the room — who is going to lead Mt. Vernon Schools through the ups and downs of rapidly growing enrollment in a community hit by urban sprawl? Once again, Dr. Parker was the answer. Parker’s tenure with Center Grove Schools since the 1980s gave him hands-on experience of working in a district that was exploding with new families, subdivisions, shopping centers and more students. With all those successes at Center Grove, it’s hard to imagine Dr. Parker leaving the school system. But he still had another goal to check off the list.
“We were in Blarney, and I kissed the Blarney stone,” Dr. Parker says. “Right after that, I got the call from the Board offering me the job. I didn’t expect to get a call since it was Thanksgiving Break. But I’m glad I did, and it made my day.” Dr. Parker made it official at a Board meeting in December and a welcome reception was held. Board of Trustees President Shannon Walls couldn’t be more delighted to welcome the new leader. “We’re building a dream team that can take on the challenges of growth in our district,
“I always wanted to become a superintendent,” he says. “When I saw the job opening, I was immediately interested because of the school system’s reputation. They’re already growing so rapidly, working to become STEM certified and they’re already certified with a one-to-one ratio of digital computers per student. Not every school has that.” Mt. Vernon’s district and board began their search last June. After reviewing the candidates, Mt. Vernon’s Board reached out to Dr. Parker in October to begin the interview process. 34 / GEIST MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2019 / atGeist.com
“There are a lot of similarities between the two communities, and the differences are natural and expected,” he says. “What Mt. Vernon is going through right now is not unlike what I experienced with Center Grove. The mid-year start gives me time to learn and observe before I start making recommendations. I want to be part of developing systems and making plans for that significant growth. But I want to make sure my recommendations are in line with the purpose of the district. No one issue is more important to me than the next. Curriculum, school safety and transportation will all be top priorities for me.” Dr. Parker’s official start date was January 7, 2019, and he started it at the transportation center riding the school bus and visiting each school. Lawrence Township Students Campaign For LLS Student of the Year Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided
Two Lawrence Township high school students, Maia McIntosh and Sophie Treend, are candidates for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) Students of the Year program for their tireless efforts to raise money for LLS. Katelyn Sussli, a campaign specialist for LLS Students of the Year, says the student program is a philanthropic leadership development program during which students utilize professional skills such as entrepreneurship, marketing and project management in order to raise funds for LLS.
The title Student(s) of the Year is awarded to the student or student team who raises the most funds during the seven-week competition.
the community, ensuring that candidates stand out when preparing for college and beyond. Candidates are also eligible to receive scholarships.
“During those seven weeks, ( January 24-March 16), is when our candidates and their team members are able to accept transactions (donations to their fund-raising page, execute their events, send out letters and emails),” Sussli says.
Maia McIntosh, a junior at Lawrence Central High School, says she decided to get involved in the LLS Student of the Year program because her father, Jeff, was recently diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia.
The candidates are highly motivated high school leaders enrolled in public or private schools. Teams raise money in honor of a patient hero who is currently battling or is in remission from blood cancer. The campaign also offers visibility and recognition within atGeist.com / FEBRUARY 2019 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 39
“I am raising funds in his honor,” McIntosh says. “Being involved in this program is such a unique opportunity. As candidates for LLS Student of the Year, we get to be involved with a respected organization and make a difference for so many people touched by cancer.”
McIntosh adds that she has thoroughly enjoyed being involved in the program. “I knew I would be making in a difference in the lives of others, but I had no clue that it would make such an impact on my life too,” McIntosh says. “The people I have met, the connections I’ve made and the skills I’ve acquired have exceeded my expectations.”
She also has enjoyed raising money for cancer research and informing other people about important work being accomplished through the LLS organization. “I got the chance to educate people about leukemia and lymphoma, as well as share research being done to help patients with these diagnoses,” McIntosh says. “Through my fundraising process, I have met so
many caring and generous people, and companies who are willing to donate to this needed cause.” McIntosh’s future plans include attending college and focusing on the education of children living with disabilities and life-altering diagnoses. “My hope is to minor in American Sign Language,” she says. In the meantime, she will still keep working to raise money for LLS research. “I have created a website, allowing people to donate to these efforts for LLS, as well as two other causes I am working on at this time,” McIntosh says. “If anyone wants to learn more, they can go to maiamcintosh.com.” Sophie Treend, a junior at Lawrence North High School, got involved in the Students of the Year program through some of her friends at school. “When I first heard about the campaign, I was intimidated to start, because it seemed so overwhelming,” Treend says. “Over the summer, one of my good friends, Claire Snyder, had been diagnosed with Leukemia. After thinking about what her family is going through and how amazingly strong and brave she has been, I knew that I wanted to do something to give back to her and families like her family across the map.” Treend has enjoyed the campaign so far. “I am so happy to be involved, especially getting to learn more about the leukemia and lymphoma society itself and just getting an overall great real-life experience on how to talk to all different sorts of people,” she says. “I’m learning about different businesses and getting to know the community as a whole. I love being able to help with a great cause.” Treend secured sponsorships, planned team meetings and became “even more involved with the school system itself as well as the overall township, planning

events and preparing a fundraising page.” Treend noted that all the other students participating in the competition are kindhearted and outgoing. “We all have the same overarching goal of being the generation that cures blood cancers, and we all believe that any sort of help we can get is amazing,” Treend says. “It’s good to have that connection with these other students. I have gotten especially close with Maia. Though we are both on different teams, we want to put this great cause through our school system and work together on a few projects. She has been amazing to work with.” Treend plans to apply for Ball State University or Indiana University. She potentially wants to become a journalist for a magazine or work on her creative writing. “I love to write,” she says. Treend adds that within the LLS competition, she and McIntosh are planning to host a Lawrence Central staff versus Lawrence North staff basketball game. “All proceeds will go to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society,” Treend says. “We are so excited to continue working on this plan. I am very excited for the start of the Kickoff and to be fundraising for such a great cause.” Visit Treend’s fundraising page at events.lls.org/in/indianasoy19/ streend.

Art to Remember LOCAL BUSINESS HELPS STUDENTS CREATE KEEPSAKE ART FOR SCHOOL FUNDRAISERS Writer / Julie Yates Photography Provided
Many parents and schools approach fundraisers with mixed feelings. The
proceeds are needed to benefit programs that may have limited resources, but they dread asking friends and family to buy unneeded low-quality products. One locally-based endeavor, Art to Remember, atGeist.com / FEBRUARY 2019 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 43
has a plan that teachers, students and parents actually enjoy. Its main emphasis is on raising money for elementary school art programs, but participating schools can use the money raised however they wish.

“My father was friends with other people who owned businesses,” Boncosky says. “They worked hard and sometimes had some struggles, but they all seemed to enjoy their work and were really engaged in it.” ANBI-7501
Over $1 billion in assets under management for clients.
Operating Art to Remember is a second career for seven-year owner Bill Boncosky. After several years as a lawyer both in private practice and as a general counsel, he realized his heart wasn’t in the profession anymore and he felt like he needed a change. His father had been a small businessman in the copier industry.

Art to Remember supplies the paper and even lesson plans for students to create their own original art. Then the drawings are printed on a choice of more than 40 keepsake products that parents, friends and relatives can purchase. The biggest sellers are refrigerator magnets which are the most popular with moms. Dads like the coffee mugs since they can be placed on a work desk. A few of the other items that are offered are cellphone cases, garden flags, pillow cases, ornaments and coasters.
After securing a business broker, Boncosky began looking for an enterprise that would be right for him. Art to Remember was brought to his attention and it seemed like a natural fit. “Since there is a printing aspect to Art to Remember, I felt comfortable because my dad’s business was involved in that,” he says. “It also was rooted in

a good cause. It was a great match and I’ve never regretted it.” In September of 2017, the company moved to 9425 E. 59th Street on land Boncosky purchased form the Fort Harrison Reuse Authority. The roof is covered in solar panels which produces so much energy in the summer that electricity is spilled back on the grid. The building is large enough to handle everything the company produces and is located close to where most of the employees, called teammates, live.
