FISHERS FREEBIRDS NE W 5 0 -A ND - B E T T E R C LU B E N J OYS C OMM U NI T Y AC T I VI T I E S Writer / Julie Yates Photography Provided

Fishers is considered to be one of the best communities in Indiana. It borders Indianapolis but retains a small-town feel. With a low crime rate, award-winning public-school system and multiple public parks, it attracts families who want a great place to raise children. But the city of Fishers isn’t just comprised of young adults and youngsters — it has a growing population of mature individuals, too. Fishers Parks and Recreation has responded

to this group by creating Fishers Freebirds, a new program which provides diverse and varied activities for what it calls fifty and better citizens. “We launched Fishers Freebirds in September 2018,” says Sarah Sandquist, Fishers Parks and Recreation Director. “The idea came from a trend that we started hearing from residents at our events and senior programs. We found that many of these community members had moved to Fishers to be closer to their grandchildren and families and wanted a resource to meet atGeist.com / MARCH 2019 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 9

friends. We also noticed that many older adults don’t want to be called seniors, hence the name of our new initiative. Freebirds describe older adults who may be empty nesters or who have more free time because they are retired and want to connect with other like-minded people in the community. “We also launched this new program to coincide with the city’s American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Age-Friendly Community Designation. The designation emphasizes the city’s commitment to continued age-friendly efforts.”

Besides offering activities that are constantly changing, the group has a set meeting on the first Wednesday of each month. These get-togethers usually feature a speaker or an activity and take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Ambassador House, 10598 Eller Road. The Freebirds are hosting some unique events in March. Some activities are free and others require a reservation and fee. A Saint Patrick’s Day Luncheon will be held on Friday, March 15th at Saxony Hall, 13362 Pennington Road from 11 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at $10 a person. Participants will enjoy a traditional Irish meal, live music and bingo with prizes. On Tuesday, March 19th, a gel paint printing class will be held at the Ambassador House from 10 a.m. to noon. Each attendee will have the opportunity to create a piece of art using the technique taught for a charge of $20. “We are launching a new Cards and Conversation and Game Night for Freebirds. Each will be offered twice

a month,” adds Susan Davis, Event Coordinator. “We are also excited to continue our partnership with Hamilton Trace, A Cardon Family First Senior Living Community, who is the Fishers Freebirds sponsor.” Individuals can see a list of upcoming Freebirds activities in the Fishers Parks and Recreation catalog, Play Fishers. The publication can also be viewed online along with signup instructions or

registration can be done in person at the Fishers Parks and Recreation office, 11565 Brooks School Road, as well as by mail. “The group is still growing, and there has been a lot of interest in these activities so far,” Davis says. “We plan on building on these Freebirds events and activities throughout the rest of 2019.” Visit PlayFishers.com/Freebirds for more information on Fishers Freebirds.

Founder Marie Maher

Local Mom’s Website Connects Parents of Children With Special Needs to Qualified Babysitters Writer / Josh Brown Photographer / Brian Brosmer

Two years ago, Marie Maher received an official diagnosis from doctors that her son, Yves, had autism. The diagnosis explained what she thought to be behavioral issues with her son, but it also left Maher with more questions and much to learn. Prior to the diagnosis, Maher was struggling to find babysitters that could watch Yves, along with her daughter Luella, while she and her husband went out for a date

night or when events came up. It left the Mahers in a tough position.

a date night or anything like that. Then we got his diagnosis and everything changed.”

“We were having behavior issues with him simply because we didn’t know what was going on,” Maher says. “We would always get calls from our sitters asking us to come home. They just didn’t know how to handle it. We avoided going out at all because we thought we had a kid with behavior issues and no one wanted to watch him. I couldn’t relax when I went out for anything. My husband and I would go months without

For Maher, it was an eyeopening moment. At the time, Maher was running a networking website in which she helped connect babysitters looking for work and parents looking for a sitter to watch their children. With more than 500 sitters listed on her site, she began interviewing new sitters that might be able to watch her son. She quickly realized how the conversation with these sitters

shifted once she mentioned that Yves had autism. “The moment I would say that my son has autism I would see this person change and get very uncomfortable,” Maher says. “I would text or call them later and never hear back. I started to realize that we needed a different kind of babysitter.” At the same time, Maher’s son began ABA therapy sessions. As Maher talked with the ABA therapists, she quickly realized that many of them wanted to babysit for parents of children

with autism, but they were not allowed to provide that service for kids that attended their center and didn’t know how to connect with other families outside of ABA therapy. “That is when I had my lightbulb moment,” Maher says. “I thought, ‘Maybe there is an ABA therapist, a speech therapist or a nursing student somewhere else that I could ask to babysit.’ That is when I decided to make the shift in my website and start focusing instead on getting babysitters for the special needs community.” Synapse Sitters was born. Maher’s new business is an online networking community that provides qualified candidates for those parents looking for babysitters. Sitters use the site to become a member, which lists them as available in the network, and parents use the site for a monthly fee to find and choose the right sitter for their child.

see what happens,’” Maher says. “The response has been overwhelming, both from parents and from qualified sitters looking for work. We’ve had well over 100 parents join so far. We are just trying to let these families know that we are here and this is available for them.” All babysitters looking for work can join Maher’s website and become a member, free of charge. Maher also has every sitter go through an extensive background check and pre-qualification process to make sure they meet the requirements needed for the service. For parents, membership costs $29.95 a month, and families

can cancel the membership at any time. The greatest relief of the process is that Synapse Sitters is not a placement agency. Instead, parents and sitters get connected through the site, meet, talk and mutually decide if they want to work together while agreeing on dates, times and pay rate. “Running a business is hard, but we’ve heard from many parents that appreciate the service and that means a lot,” Maher says. “Everyday I go through our sitter candidates, reach out to employers and verify their education. We also try to monitor the messaging going on between parents and sitters. We are working on ways to get a mobile app going, so it will be more like instant messaging. We can’t fill the gap for everyone, but we can certainly try.” Yves, who is now six years old, like any other child, has his own quirks and interests.

As Maher dove headfirst into this new calling, she quickly found out that she was not the only parent in the Indianapolis and surrounding areas that needed help finding a babysitter for children with special needs. “I decided, ‘Why don’t we start in Indianapolis and put this on one platform and atGeist.com / MARCH 2019 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 13

“He is obsessed with vacuum cleaners,” Maher says. “The first thing he will say to you when he meets you is, ‘Hello, my name is Yves. What kind of vacuum do you have?’ He loves logos of any kind, too. He is starting to realize that vacuum cleaners have logos and model numbers, and he can tell you the model numbers of his favorite vacuum cleaners.” His excitement has led to many vacuum-themed birthday parties. It also sparked an idea for Maher when she was asked to run for Best Buddies of Indiana Champion of the Year in 2018. While thinking of fun ways to raise money for the campaign, she thought about her son’s birthday one year and the time a friend made shirts that said “Yves Vacuum Sales & Service.” Maher decided to have more of the shirts made with the profits going to the Best

NEW JUICE BAR BRINGS HEALTHY, TAST Y OPTIONS TO FISHERS Writer / Megan Jefferson Photographer / Glenda White

In 2014, Kat and Landon Eckles opened Clean Juice, a juice bar, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Kat had been diving into the dynamic world of nutrition and became obsessed with the indisputable benefits received from eating an organic and plant heavy diet. Landon had been working in sales and management and was ready for something new. Together they decided to launch their flagship store. After being open for one year, they started franchising. The stores offer smoothies, acai bowls, avocado toast and juice

was born, they decided they wanted to try something new. Teverbaugh was ready to start a business.

Scott Teverbaugh recently opened the 47th Clean Juice in Fishers.

The Teverbaughs attended the Eckles’ Discovery Day. This day provides people who are interested in owning a franchise store, the opportunity to meet the Eckles and learn more about the Clean Juice company. The Teverbaughs fell in love with the products and the company’s commitment to serving all organic products.

Teverbaugh was on his way to Hilton Head Island for a vacation when he stopped at a Clean Juice. He tried some of the products and was intrigued by the company. He and his wife have three children and feeding them organic food has always been very important to them both. Teverbaugh’s wife is a dentist and he worked in the corporate world. it’s rewarding knowing that when someone comes, we’re serving them something that’s fresh, clean and good for them.” Clean Juice believes that eating organic is the most efficient way to reduce exposure to chemicals and pesticides, avoid GMOs and benefit from the higher nutrient content. They believe that eating organic can also help to protect our water and soil and preserve our ecosystems. Many of the juices combine both vegetables and fruits and many people are unaware that some of these foods contain the highest amount of pesticides and chemicals. “I encourage people to educate themselves on why organic is important, especially with some of the dirty dozen items that are usually found in a lot of juices and smoothies,” Eckles says. “With our juice you don’t have to worry about any of that.” The Clean Juice in Fishers is located in the Fishers Corner shopping plaza, near the Super Target. Teverbaugh is excited to finally be open in Fishers and encourages everyone to stop by. “Just because it’s good for you, doesn’t mean that it doesn’t taste good,” Teverbaugh adds. “We serve awesome, amazing products.” Clean Juice is located at 11670 Commercial Dr Suite 500 in Fishers. events and talk to the anglers anyway.”

This year Indy-based fans of Fishing League Worldwide (FLW), the largest tournament fishing organization in the world, will hear a local voice when tuning in to catch the league’s televised action.

Hollowell’s father taught him the basics of fishing when he was in elementary school, and he grew up whetting his competitive appetite by participating in weeknight fishing tournaments on Geist and Morse reservoirs.

Todd Hollowell, a Hoosier native and current Fishers resident, was invited by tournament officials to join the FLW Live coverage team, bringing seven years of competitive fishing experience and an impressive list of tournament successes to the job. “I’ve been fishing professionally since back in 2011, and to have this opportunity is fantastic,” he says. “It adds another layer of excitement for me because I follow these

After a successful run in baseball, including Division I play at Murray State University, a few years of professional play for independent league teams in the late 1990s and coaching stints at Anderson and Belmont universities, Hollowell switched gears into the business world in 2002. He’s worked at Fishers-Based Ray Insurance Group as an agent since 2008 and says fishing provided a means to channel his competitiveness after baseball had run its course. 20 / GEIST MAGAZINE / MARCH 2019 / atGeist.com

“Somehow I found my way to the Walmart Bass Fishing League in Nashville, Tennessee, in 2002 when I got out of baseball, and that first year I made it to the BFL All-American, which is kind of like the Super Bowl of amateur bass fishing,” Hollowell says. “I’ve been hooked ever since. That was 17 years ago now, and I’ve slowly and steadily worked and learned.” In 2011, Hollowell qualified for the FLW tour, and since then has compiled a lengthy list of achievements as a competitor, including seven top-20 finishes and a second-place performance at the Costa FLW Series Championship on Kentucky Lake in 2017. In 2013, Hollowell and his wife Rebecca conceptualized a televised fishing show called The Bass Dr., partnering with several

businesses throughout Indianapolis to help make the show a reality. For each weekly episode, Hollowell traveled around the U.S. to fish for smallmouth and largemouth bass, and it was that show, along with Hollowell’s competitive experience, that led to an invite from FLW leaders for Hollowell to join their broadcasting team as a live color commentator for the 2019 touring season. Hollowell is providing live commentary for five of the eight FLW events for 2019 and says he expects the experience to inform and enrich his own skills as an angler. “It’s a six-hour broadcast and there might be hours where guys are not catching fish, so it’s important to have someone that can tell a story and help the viewer understand what the people are actually doing,” he adds. In addition to his broadcasting duties, Hollowell will be competing in the FLW 2019 Costa series, represented by Red Gold Tomatoes, his title sponsor since 2011. He points to two key elements that have helped his competitive fishing career — persistence and perpetual learning. “Fishing is a sport where you fail more than you succeed, a lot like baseball,” he says. “So when you come home from an event and you’ve failed, the key is to figure out what you missed and to learn from it and go back and do it again. So it’s that commitment where you just have to keep going even when you’re exhausted, like climbing a mountain. You need that persistence.”

Pro Angler Todd Hollowell

Hollowell adds that constant support from his family and professional colleagues has been instrumental in his high level of success in professional fishing. “If someone wants to accomplish great things, they need great people around them,” he says. “It’s one of the most important things in life to have people around you that support your mission and your goals. My family, my good friends, the Ray Insurance Group and Red Gold Tomatoes have all been a critical part of that journey and I owe so much to them. They’ve all treated me like family and they’ve all played a tremendous role in my life.” atGeist.com / MARCH 2019 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 21

good chance that basketball would be his sport, but his mom, India wanted to give him opportunities to play other sports. So Armaan Franklin’s interest in basketball at the age of three, Armaan participated was evident even as a baby. For the average in a youth soccer program. When it was 8-15-month-old infant, a normal attention over, the woman who organized the league span is around one minute. When Cathedral called to see if Armaan would be returning senior guard Armaan was just 6 months old, for the second session. Armaan was he sat mesmerized on his mother’s lap and sitting next to his mom and overheard the watched an entire WNBA Houston Comets conversation. She said, “Armaan are you game without moving. going back for the second session?” and without hesitating, he looked up at her and Basketball had his attention even then. said, “Nope, I think I’ll retire.” Writer / Lynda Hedberg Thies Photographer / Rolly Landeros

With two older brothers playing basketball Even at three years old, Armaan knew he and growing up in a gym, there was a pretty wanted to play basketball. 24 / GEIST MAGAZINE / MARCH 2019 / atGeist.com

By age four, Armaan’s desire to play basketball was growing stronger asking his mom every day “Can I go try out?” “Can I play?” to which she would wearily respond, “You can’t Armaan, you’re too young, and you’re only four.” It was the same routine dozens of time throughout the day and likely because he spent most of his youth in gyms watching his two older brothers play in basketball leagues. India realized that distracting him was becoming increasingly more difficult so she decided to use a typical parent tactic. Let the coach tell him he was too young.

India simply asked the coach if he could try out for the team knowing that he needed to be five or six years old to play in the league. She explained to the coach that he has a strong desire to play the game and explained that he had been begging her every day to play and with a wink to the coach, she said, “And if my son can do the things the other kids are doing, then maybe he could play.” Deep down she was hoping the coach would back her up and tell young Armaan that he was too young to play, but that was not how it all played out that day. “He was out there killing it and I was thinking, this is not how this was supposed to turn out,” she recalls. So at the age of four, he played up with the five and six-year-olds, and that was the beginning of his journey. India is not only his greatest fan, but she has

been cheering on two older brothers who started young and also played at the college level and has logged more than 24 years in gyms around Indiana and around the country cheering on her boys. But before the basketball family dynasty began, India’s sister, Coquese Washington played high school basketball, then for the University of Notre Dame Women’s Basketball program under legendary Head Coach Muffet

McGraw. Washington completed her degree program in three years and would play in the first year of the WNBA eventually helping the Houston Comets win the WNBA Championship before using her law degree to serve as the organizations’ first president. Today she is the Penn State Women’s Head Basketball Coach, and she has had an enormous impact on Armaan and his brothers’ love for the sport.

It is hard to imagine that at the end of Armaan’s sophomore year he was so far under the recruiting radar. He had lost confidence in himself and it was affecting his life inside and outside of the game. Armaan began working with a trainer before he left to play with his AAU team on the Under Armor circuit, and he worked with him all summer. He got his confidence back and even though he was still under the radar, India told him, “It’s ok, just keep working and keep at it. Keep at it. He kept working out, kept training and any opportunity he got to train, even two times a day, early in the morning and late at night.” His confidence was evident to everyone that watched him play. Eventually others began to see the transformation, and the coaches began to attend basketball games, offers to visit schools began to take place and eventually more than 14 Division I offers began pouring in. Armaan’s best friend, Purdue-commit, Isaiah Thompson, was pulling hard to have him join him in West Lafayette. About a month before he decided to commit to IU, India would have never guessed that is where he was going to go. When the decision was made to attend IU, they both felt this was the best place for him to continue his career.

“I am excited about playing on a huge stage in the Big Ten, playing with and against National level competition,” Armaan says. “I am just really excited to play in the college atmosphere to push me to be a better player. With the success the IU Basketball Program is having, I’m excited about joining the team after graduation. The team is headed in the right direction, and Coach Miller is guard-oriented, which is great for me as a guard.” Closing out his Cathedral career strong, Armaan talked about his Cathedral family.

“These guys are more like my brothers,” he says. “We love playing together, but we hang out outside of basketball, too. Coach Delaney has expected a lot out of me. He pushes me to be better, and I am so grateful for his support. As a senior leader, this has been a good experience to step out of my quietness and shyness and become more of a vocal leader.” In a few short months, Armaan will step onto the IU campus for the first time as one of the top prospects in the state in the class of 2019. The future looks bright.

Most Inspiring NBA Player: “Definitely Kawhi Leonard with the Toronto Raptors. He is a small forward and quiet, like me, and he stays humble and maintains a level-head.”

What are you going to study at IU? “I’m going to study Sports Management. If I don’t make it to the NBA level, I want to help others achieve their dream.”

Tasteful Times Owner Jon Sadler Launches LLS Man of the Year Campaign Writer / Jon Shoulders Photography Provided

As Jon Sadler kicks off his campaign for 2019 Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) Man of the Year in March, his reason for the undertaking is simple — cancer affects nearly everyone in some way, and he wants to be a meaningful voice in the fight against it. “I don’t think it’s naive to say every single person has been touched in some way by cancer,” says Sadler, who owns Tasteful Times gourmet wine and food shop in Fishers. “With the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society we are battling blood cancers, but everyone has a story in regards to cancer so we’re trying to do our part in fighting these ugly diseases. I have a twoand-a-half-year-old daughter, and we’d love to see a day where she doesn’t have to worry about cancer taking one of her parents or grandparents.” Last November, Sadler was nominated to run an LLS Man of the Year campaign by a few former candidates he’d helped in previous years, including fellow Indy residents Jason Llewellyn and Jill Petruzzi, and began a rigorous planning process for the 10-week philanthropic competition,

“I have those personal-level reasons for doing this, and then the experiences I’ve had helping other candidates was the other piece of it,” explains Sadler, a Pennsylvania native who attended junior high and high school in Terre Haute and studied business management at IU-Bloomington before developing the Tasteful Times concept with his father Ian 10 years ago. “We decided that Both of Sadler’s grandfathers, John Sadler since we know how to throw fun parties and and James Harding, and his wife Maggie’s grandmother Catherine Houston, died from we’ve raised a good amount of money for these campaigns on behalf of others, maybe cancer, and he says those tragic losses were important factors in his decision to partake we can put together a 10-week campaign and do some good.” in the event this year. which runs from March 7 to May 18. The competition is held each year in cities and towns across the U.S., and the candidates with the most funds raised for blood cancer research at the end of the 10-week contest get crowned Man and Woman of the Year in their particular community.

Sadler plans to hold a few fundraising functions during the 10-week campaign including an event at Body Evolution Crossfit on Olio Road on March 15 and a larger gala event on May 11 at an as-yetundetermined location. Those interested in making a donation during the 10-week competition can do so on Sadler’s Man of the Year web page (see URL below), at one of his upcoming events and at the Tasteful Times store on Olio Road. Erin Neufer will play a supporting role in the new Broadway original “Ink.”

HSE ALUM ERIN NEUFER LANDS SUPPORTING ROLE IN NEW BROADWAY PLAY Writer / Josh Brown Photography Provided

Erin Neufer knew from a young age that she wanted to be in showbiz one day. Neufer took part in a school play in first grade — “Pinocchio” — and caught the acting bug ever since. Today, she’s landed one of her first big breaks after years of grinding in New York for auditions. Starting in April, Neufer will be playing a supporting role in

a new Broadway original play called “Ink.” It’s a dream come true for the 2006 HSE alum. “I did plays all throughout high school,” Neufer says. “I ended up getting my degree in theater at Ball State. I’ve been to hundreds of auditions. I had a quiet year, this past year, but finally, I got this audition. This is my first Broadway role, and I’m so excited. Any actor who dreams has at one time dreamed to be on Broadway. I’m so grateful, and I feel

validated that all this hard work has paid off in some way.” Neufer is best known for her recurring role as Emily in the Netflix show “Gypsy.” The new Broadway show, “Ink” tells the true story of one of the first tabloids — The Sun. The show is set in 1969 in London and follows a young Rupert Murdoch who purchases the failing paper in an effort to make it a must-read publication. Neufer will play several roles

32 / GEIST MAGAZINE / MARCH 2019 / atGeist.com

in the play, but her main role is that of Rupert’s wife, Anna Murdoch. She will share the stage with Bertie Carvel, who is playing the lead role as Rupert. Carvel has taken on many Broadway, movie and TV roles over the years, including appearances in Les Miserables and Sherlock, to name a few. “Professionally, I will have a lot of stage time, and that is exciting,” Neufer says. “Bertie is going to be really spectacular in this. I’m looking

forward to sharing a stage with all the actors.” Throughout high school in Fishers, Neufer says her biggest mentor and influence was her drama teacher at HSE — Jen Otterman. “When I booked this show and got the role, one of the first people, besides my parents, that I reached out to tell was Jen,” Neufer says. “She made me realize this is a career I could actually have and put a love of the art of acting in me. I want to be able to pay my respects to the people who have helped me on my path by doing the best I can possibly do.” That path has been quite a long and winding road for Neufer. Like most aspiring

actors early on, it is not all glitz and glam. The acting scene is very much a grind, and Neufer says all the auditions and times you are turned down can wear you out if you don’t keep pressing on. “Being an actor in New York is not easy,” she says. “You are busting your butt all the time just to be able to pay rent. On top of that, you are going to these auditions where you are told no three times a week. It teaches you a lot about dedication and trusting that you are in the right job. It really is a full-time vocation, more than just a career. This is the first light at the end of the tunnel, so to speak, for me. It is really special to finally get something tangible out of all that hard work.”

High Frequency Arts ART CONSULTING FIRM OFFERS UNIQUE SERVICES Jill Lehman’s new Fishers business has been in the headlines since it opened in January. High Frequency Arts has been described as an “art consultant.” Indeed, Lehman’s business does assist art collectors, businesses and home décor enthusiasts select and install original artwork. However, the “art consultant” description doesn’t come close to describing all that High Frequency Arts offers to the Fishers community.

be “art consultant, art merchant and local artist promoter.” As a new entrepreneur, Lehman has creatively built a unique Fishers’ arts business model that cannot be described in just a few words.

Upon opening in January as an art gallery and event center, Lehman quickly realized the focus needed to shift, full-time, back to the consulting side of her business. After When you learn more about the breadth of initially moving into a location off Maple art services, experiences and opportunities Street in Fishers, she decided to relocate that Lehman offers, a better description may to a smaller studio at the end of February. 34 / GEIST MAGAZINE / MARCH 2019 / atGeist.com

High Frequency Arts continues to serve its clients and the Fishers community in unique ways. ART CONSULTANT You don’t have to be an experienced art collector to enjoy High Frequency Arts. A business-owner enhancing their space, a resident updating their home’s interior decor, a designer serving a client, a person looking for a special gift or a new enthusiast exploring art for the first time are all welcome. “High Frequency Art’s mission is to

invigorate interest in art, ignite creativity and tune up spaces through the use of art,” Lehman says. To fulfill that mission, the organization offers consultant services to help everyone explore, select, purchase and install the perfect artwork for them. Lehman has found that businesses in particular are discovering the value of art more than ever. Some companies have enhanced their work spaces with art to help unlock creativity and engagement with employees. Lehman has collaborated with business owners who value how visual art can inspire employees by creating a unique work environment.

“High Frequency Arts helps to create engaging work environments for businesses so they can deliver on the promise of culture and inspire each employee to realize their maximum potential,” Lehman says. ART MERCHANT High Frequency Arts offers a variety of artwork and a variety of price points, generally anywhere from $350-$10,000. For a grand opening event in January, visitors had the opportunity to meet and chat with artists who are part of Lehman’s extensive artist network. This allowed each art patron and artist to interact, developing a relationship which adds to the artwork’s intrinsic value for the purchaser. In addition, one of High Frequency Arts’ services for customers is to execute the art purchases on behalf of the artists. “We offer original artwork, not what you may typically find – which is mass-produced prints and frames,” Lehman says. “Everything we sell is made by the hands of artists.” Lehman notes that other art merchants may serve customers as a framing shop, while High Frequency Arts serves as a connector between artists and purchaser who desires original and unique artwork.

LOCAL ARTIST PROMOTER High Frequency Arts ultimately strives to help artists’ careers and grow the local arts ecosystem. The business is uniquely poised to serve customers with art, by extending the artists’ exposure to customers. Lehman has created a large network of local and regional artists that she engages and promotes. Every artist that High Frequency Arts features is a recommendation of sorts because Lehman and her team review and vet each artist first. Lehman encourages all contemporary artists to reach out to High Frequency Arts to discuss opportunities to partner together. She is always looking to grow her network and encourage commerce to advance local artists. High Frequency Arts is a multifaceted arts business that serves the community

as an art consultant, art merchant and local artist promoter. In addition, High Frequency Arts is also a locally-owned business, an Indianapolis certified woman business enterprise. Recently Fishers’ downtown was awarded a Statewide Cultural District distinction and created a new Arts & Culture Commission. Lehman met with five members of the commission last month to discuss her company’s arts services and how High Frequency Arts will enhance the value of art in the community. COMMUNITY GOALS Jordan Dickey Is Leading Fishers’ Power Soccer Club, Competing With Team USA & Tackling Stigma Writer / Josh Brown Photographer / Brian Brosmer

Jordan Dickey was born with a rare, genetic muscular disorder — distal spinal muscular atrophy — one that has kept him in a wheelchair since he was three years old. Still, the condition hasn’t remotely kept him from pursuing his dreams and achieving his goals. When you ask Dickey about his childhood, he describes it as normal, “no different really than other kids.” He grew up in the Pendleton area — a normal childhood with a close family, friends and extracurricular activities. “I’ve grown up with this, it’s just my life,”

Dickey says. “I have two siblings that have (muscular atrophy) as well and that made it easier growing up, sharing our experiences together. My parents were able to give us all the opportunities in the world, and they have been very supportive.”

of what life could become,” Dickey says. “I had role models through soccer who had gone to college, gotten a job, started families, and that really showed me that life doesn’t stop because of a disability. It goes on, you just have to adapt to it.”

As Dickey grew older, he developed a love for all sports, but he quickly realized it was soccer that he had the most passion for, and it showed on the field. He started playing wheelchair power soccer when he was 10 years old — meeting more people with disabilities and creating relationships and friendships along the way.

Dickey’s passion for soccer only grew stronger throughout high school. It wasn’t long before he was packing his bags for college to head out west at Arizona State University. He continued playing wheelchair soccer for ASU throughout his college career.

“Meeting more people with disabilities broadened my perspective, even at that age,

In 2011, at only about 18 years old, he got the opportunity of a lifetime when he was invited to join Team USA’s Power Soccer Paralympics team. The team won gold in Paris that year, and Dickey’s love of the sport and pride of playing for his country only continued to grow. “Going to France that year was a lot of fun,” he says. “Winning the gold medal that year validates the hard work you put into it. It is

an amazing experience playing for your country. When you hear the National Anthem, you are so proud of not only what you’ve done but your country, your family and everything that got you there. Just watching this sport grow over the years has been amazing.” Dickey also competed with Team USA at the 2017 World Cup in Orlando. The team came up short that year, finishing with the silver medal. The second place finish, Dickey says, has left himself and the rest of Team USA itching to get back to the next tournament in 2021, which will be held in Sydney, Australia. Dickey will travel to Brazil later this year to compete in the Copa America, a qualifying tournament ahead of the 2021 World Cup.

QUALITY ASSETS.

“I’m looking forward to going to Brazil this year and getting back together with Team USA,” he says. “It’s amazing to see this sport spreading all throughout the world. I never thought that I would get to travel the world like this. Every kid dreams of playing for their national team. Power soccer has given me that opportunity, and I’m grateful for it.” After graduating college, Dickey moved back to Indy. Today, he works as a senior data scientist at Statwax in Fishers. In his free time, it’s still all about soccer for the 25-year old. Dickey leads the RHI Sudden Impact wheelchair soccer team — a club team based in Fishers. The team practices most weeks at Sand Creek Elementary’s gym, and the athletes have built strong friendships with one another over the years. “You don’t realize how many people there are with disabilities in our community here,” Dickey says. “They are just living everyday life. Through the club team in Fishers, we get to meet each other and form life-long bonds. I’ve gone from learning from my own role models to being more of a leader on this team and in the power

Fishers invited Dickey as one of two speakers to share his own story at the Disability Awareness Month Kick-Off event on March 1 at City Hall. He was thankful to be able to talk about his own experiences. “It is really important to me,” Dickey says. “I am typically not a big outspoken guy. I’m more quiet by nature. But it is important for other people to realize that people with disabilities are no different than others. We just want to be given the same opportunities as others. Those with physical or intellectual disabilities simply want to be given the chance to prove themselves. I can’t speak for all people with disabilities, but I can speak from my own experiences. “The stigmas really weren’t there as a kid,” Dickey adds. “I feel like they grow and develop in people as we get older. We are just regular people going through our daily lives just like you are but maybe with a few more challenges. Still, everyone has their own challenges to face in life.”

To other kids growing up with a similar condition as Dickey’s, he offers simple, but sound, advice. “Find what you are passionate about and a group of people who are also passionate about the same thing,” he says. “Forming that bond with people is important. 10th Annual Bev Hartig Huntington’s Disease Foundation Gala Returns April 27 Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger Photography Provided

The 10th anniversary Gala for the Bev Hartig Huntington’s Disease Foundation is coming up, and it’s not going to be the average fundraiser gala. But, then, Huntington’s Disease is no ordinary neurological disease. Fishers resident Bev Hartig suffers from Huntington’s Disease (HD). She and a group of friends established the foundation in 2010 to raise money to find a cure for the disease. This year, the foundation is celebrating its 10th-anniversary gala Saturday, April 27 at 7 p.m. at the Forum Conference and Events Center, in Fishers. The theme for this year’s milestone celebration is “A Musical Celebration of Giving.” Guests will enjoy a red-carpet experience complete with a sit-down dinner and special musical guests. Songwriter City will delight guests with their award-winning songs which they wrote for artists including Faith Hill, Rascal Flatts, Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood and more. For an even bigger treat, the songwriters will share the stories behind the Grammy and Country Music Award-winning songs. The journey to the foundation’s 10thanniversary celebration has been filled with mixed blessings, all starting with Bev. She grew up with a beautiful childhood full of

blessed memories with her adoptive family. In 1992, Bev’s birthparents sought her out, and she was blessed to find out they’d later married and had more children, giving her new siblings. She and her husband Bob married in 1997, and just a year later, she got a devastating phone call that her birth father had been diagnosed with Huntington’s Disease. She knew nothing about it, but she soon learned all about the degenerative neurological disease and that she and her siblings would have a 50 percent chance of inheriting it. Making the choice to arm herself with knowledge, Bev took the blood test and learned she, in fact, carries the gene to the disease that would take her birthfather’s life 44 / GEIST MAGAZINE / MARCH 2019 / atGeist.com

in 2006 at age 57. But Bev didn’t make her diagnosis 20 years ago the end game. “Bev’s mission has always been to educate people about the disease and create awareness, encourage them to donate to the foundation and to believe that a cure will happen,” Board member Cecilia Coble says. “Bev firmly believes that together, we can make this the last generation with Huntington’s Disease.” Knowing the headline about Huntington’s Disease is just a start. For people who know little about the rare neurological disease, HD might seem to them like MS or MD. But that doesn’t even scratch the surface. HD is inherited at birth and

usually surfaces between the ages of 30 and 40. A gene causes the nerve cells in the brain to gradually break down over time, causing symptoms like difficulty balancing, experiencing involuntary movements or muscle twitches (chorea), slow mobility, decreased mental acuity, lack of concentration and, ultimately, losing the ability to walk, chew or swallow. For Bev, those symptoms began appearing gradually about 10 years ago. At this point, Bev’s symptoms have progressed to the point where she needs constant assistance with daily tasks like walking, standing and even eating. “Bev often notices that many people who see her in public remark that she looks intoxicated,” Coble says. “She wants to change that stigma and create awareness so that people don’t judge.” Bev’s appetite has been impacted because she’s in danger of choking on even soft foods and liquids. Her speech is slurred as the disease has slowly taken control over those muscles. Besides fighting her symptoms, Bev’s top priority is to take care of her family, husband Bob, daughter Katie (age 16) and son Ryan (age 15). It’s not an easy task not just because the kids are teenagers, but because Katie is also a special needs child and needs assistance as well.

Many of those close friends and neighbors round out the foundation’s board and committees. The entire team has worked hard every year to raise funds and put on the annual Gala. As of 2019, the foundation has raised more than $1.4 million for research and to help local Hoosiers with Huntington’s Disease by assisting them with their specific needs for improving their quality of life.

Beyond research, the Bev Hartig Huntington’s Foundation has provided funds to help improve the quality of life for Huntington’s Disease patients. The foundation has donated to Summerfield Health Center which offers skilled nursing care for those with Huntington’s Disease, and an Indiana University Social Worker who provides support and resources for those diagnosed with HD and their families.

Bev’s children are prohibited from undergoing the genetic testing for Huntington’s Disease until they reach age 18. In the meantime, she continues to fight for her family in the hopes of finding a cure.

The Gala is the foundation’s main fundraising event, and they need your support. Tickets to the event will go on sale in March. You can choose from seating at VIP tables, Premier tables and reserved seating. You can also make a tax-deductible donation on the foundation’s website. Funding research is the foundation’s primary mission, but they also want to connect the Huntington’s Disease community.

“It continues to shock Bev that there is still no cure or drug to slow the progression of the disease,” Coble says. But that only makes Bev and the foundation more motivated to raise funds for research. A few of the studies the Foundation has funded include an Oregon Health and Science University research study on RNA repeats in monkey models, an MIT study to research therapeutic test studies in mice, a Scripps Research Institute study on mice to see if a series of compounds can be effective in treating Huntington’s Disease and getting promising studies of GM1 (a type of brain fat found in sheep) to clinical trials.

A special group of friends from her neighborhood has been by her side every step of the way to help her. “Bev has been unable to drive for about five years now. So, that special group of neighbors and childhood friends take her to do errands, take her to lunch,” Coble says. “Being with Bev changes the way you see the world.” As difficult as it is to see their friend struggling, there is no other place they would rather be than by Bev’s side. “She’s known for her bubbly spirit and smile,” Coble adds. “She’s got spunk and she’s got a deep faith.” atGeist.com / MARCH 2019 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 45

“If you or someone else you know in the community suffers from Huntington’s Disease, we want to connect with you,” Coble says. “We want to grow the foundation’s board, and we want to provide emotional support and other resources to people within this community.” Visit bevhartighuntingtonsdisease.com to purchase tickets to the gala, donate and to learn more about Bev’s journey.
