RecovAware founders John Bishop, Dan Fisher and Tommy Crowe.

Local Startup Rethinks Knee Recovery Writer / Jimmy Girot III

In this digital age of innovation, no industry is overlooked when it comes to mobile app development. Most people are familiar with the phrase, “there’s an app for that.” Well, now there is an app for optimizing knee recovery, and the founders of this app are Indiana natives and two are graduates of Cathedral High School — Tommy Crowe and Dan Fisher.

What are your professional backgrounds? How did you meet?

“Dan Fisher is a biomedical engineer with training in sensors, bioinstrumentation and signal processing. Tommy Crowe is a digital marketing and branding specialist that owns a web design and digital marketing agency based in Carmel. John Bishop is an attorney specializing in intellectual property and business law. Crowe and Fisher met in high school at Cathedral. They also RecovAware develops recovery awareness software. RecovAware’s wake-boarded competitively together growing up. Bishop and Fisher are cousins.” software builds motivation and confidence in the patient by giving them the ability to capture, track and understand their recovery progress. These local entrepreneurs sat down for a Q-&-A to tell us more about RecovAware.

Why start RecovAware? “Two years ago, Dan Fisher was working on sensors and instrumentation for monitoring biological signals and realized the potential of smartphones as instrumentation for monitoring these signals. Soon after, Fisher began developing an iOS application for collecting data related to the recovery of knee function during the treatment of knee conditions. Towards the end of 2016, he founded RecovAware and approached Tommy Crowe and John Bishop about joining as co-founders. All three members of the RecovAware team have experienced the difficulties of recovering from a medical condition and, as such, have a deep passion and personal stake in the company’s vision and products. Fisher and Crowe both grew up active in school sports and extreme sports. During that time, they sustained many injuries, including ACL tears, ankle sprains, rotator cuff tears and broken bones. With these experiences in mind, they refocused the company on developing engaging, patient-facing experiences and evolved the knee application to specifically address the problems that have traditionally been difficult to address throughout treatment.”

What do you see as the long-term purpose of RecovAware?

“RecovAware aims to create data-rich and informative recovery profiles and health records for patients. This is accomplished by leveraging highly engaging and relevant user experiences whereby patients capture their own data while tracking the progress of their condition and the effectiveness of their current treatment plan. The most important stakeholder during any treatment is the patient and we believe they should be in the driver’s seat of their recovery. Currently, data relevant to the progress of a recovery is segmented across multiple sources such that the data is either not accessible or is too difficult to aggregate by the patient. It is almost impossible for a patient to track their recovery and gain a deep understanding of their progress. RecovAware’s design alleviates this problem by unifying all of the important data while automating the delivery of relevant trends and insights. Once the design is optimized for users, we will begin launching versions of the app for other use cases. RecovAware will become a suite of software applications that act as a focal point for all data and insights relevant to a patient's current recovery.” RecovAware’s app will be available in the Apple App Store. For more information about the intersection of technology and recovery, visit RecovAware.com.

Cathedral Wrestling Team Takes Home State Championship While the Irish clearly had the depth and one of the strongest teams in the state, victory was not guaranteed even though they positioned themselves well. The For the second time in five seasons, the Irish led with five semi-state champions Cathedral High School Irish Wrestling and had 10 wrestlers qualify for the state Team won the state title. Since their first championship. This was the most of any state title in 2014, the Irish have come close of the 104 schools participating in the to victory placing no less than third in the tournament. Brownsburg, the defending state. The commitment of every wrestler first-time, state champion had seven qualify to achieve their goals put in motion the for the state tournament and had four semivictory before they ever stepped foot in state champions, so the path to victory for Bankers Life Fieldhouse to claim the title on the Irish was not a guarantee. February 17 at the 80th IHSAA Wrestling State Finals. Cathedral Head Wresting Coach Sean McGinley knew even with having the most The Irish built this state championship wrestlers qualify, that there was a chance from every individual goal that was set, that they could wrestle well but still just every required and extra workout when no might not be enough. one was looking, their intention at practice and the collective vision they had as a Having been close many times in his 18team. everyone would have to give their best to make victory a certainty. “The only way we could win was a total team effort. Fortunately, we wrestled extremely well and won the title. Perhaps better than anyone expected,” McGinley says. Cathedral junior Jordan Slivka won the individual state title at 145 pounds, and the team effort was aided by six more top eight finishers: sophomore Logan Bailey, junior Lukasz Walendzak, junior Alex Mosconi, senior Zack Melloh, sophomore Elliot Rodgers and senior Jacob Obst. Sophomore Caleb Oliver also made the state meet for Cathedral, as did freshman Andrew Wilson and senior Anthony Mosconi. McGinley and his coaching staff knew when the season started if each of the kids achieved their individual goals that they

had a strong chance to make a run at the state title. “I credit the five seniors for providing the leadership and for keeping the team going when the pressure got to them,” McGinley says when reflecting on what the senior leadership meant to the team. “They got this team mentally where they needed to be and that is such a tribute to those guys.” For senior and team co-captain, Zach Melloh, winning a team state championship meant more to him than achieving an individual state championship. “Winning the state championship was something I will never forget and will always cherish. It was really cool to be part of a team of so many talented wrestlers,” says Melloh, who will wrestle for Purdue University next year. The seniors’ record over the four years included this state championship, state

championship runner up and two years at third place. “When I think about all this senior class has accomplished, it is just very impressive, and I could not be happier that this group achieved a state title,” McGinley says. As the Head Coach for 18 years, McGinley, has had quite an impressive run leading the program to 18 City Championships, 12 Sectional Team Championships, 10 Regional Team Championships and a State Runner-Up. Cathedral’s first

state championship was also credited to McGinley and his staff in 2014. His confidence in the program is evident. As the Irish look to the future, McGinley reflects on this year’s state victory. The Irish won the state title with 108 points, 7.5 points ahead of Brownsburg and 9.5 ahead of Columbus East. “I am very optimistic about next year because we have the wrestlers that earned 85 of those state victory points returning next year,” McGinley says.

SOON TO BE

“Learn Early, Live Well and Lead!”

FRESH FOOD FLAVORS I love making food for your kids and my kids. My kids love certain treats I make at home and at the school my “famous” cornbread and of course my scratch-made strawberry jam. I avoid feeding my kids corn syrup if I can help it, so years ago before I ever went to culinary school to be a chef, I started making my own jam. I came up with my own version which is quick, simple to make and healthier than the regular stuff. Because it tastes so good, and it is made in small batches, I never have to process and can it, I just fill it in simple jars and refrigerate any leftovers.

Chef Seiji Bryant, Rainbow Station

Stir well and dish into jars with lids. Make sure it cools before you put the jars in the refrigerator. If your child has a nut allergy, check the chia seeds to make sure they were not made in a facility with nuts. After it cools, it is perfect jam. It won’t last but a few days in the fridge so eat it up quickly. We like to eat the jam on my cornbread. SEIJI’S CORNBREAD MUFFINS

1lb of organic strawberries 1 cup of organic sugarcane 1/3 cup of chia seeds

Wet 2/3 cup sugar ½ teaspoon baking soda 1 cup corn meal 1 cup all purpose flour ½ teaspoon salt Dry 1 cup buttermilk 2 eggs Mix in Last ½ cup melted butter

Trim the greens off the tops of the strawberries and toss into a pot on Med-High heat with the sugar. As the strawberries cook, they will seem to melt. As it cooks down, smash them down with a potato masher. Add the chia seeds and continue to simmer and stir. Keep stirring to make sure it does not burn. If it splatters, it will feel like lava so be careful. When the chia seeds turn clear, usually with just a little dark speck in the center, it is done.

A very simple cornbread recipe easy for kids to help put together. Melt the butter and let it cool. It should be liquid when you mix it in but not hot. Mix the wet ingredients (except the butter) together in one mixing bowl and the dry ingredients in another bowl. Depress a pool in the center of the dry ingredients and fold in the wet ingredients and then mix. Add the butter into the mix. Funnel the mix into baking cups and bake at 375 for about 15 minutes depending on the

CHUNKY STRAWBERRY CHIA JAM

size of the muffins. Test with a toothpick. Better a little wet than dry. Nothing worse than choking on dry cornbread. Try the jam and cornbread together for an alternative to a processed snack for after school. If the foods your children eat are important to you, please come by to check out the kitchen, meet me and tell me your concerns. Make sure to take a tour to meet the nurses and teachers too.

JOHN RODENBERG TAKES OVER AS LAWRENCE CENTRAL HEAD FOOTBALL COACH

John Rodenberg was formerly a head coach at Archbishop Moeller High School in Cincinnati from 2008 to 2017.

Writer / Seth Johnson Photographer / Ron Wise

For decades, John Rodenberg has equipped young men for life after high school through his work on the football field. Now as the new varsity football coach at Lawrence Central High School, his plan is to do more of the same.

Having been on the high school football sidelines since 1988, Rodenberg was formerly a head coach at Archbishop Moeller High School in Cincinnati from 2008 to 2017. While at Moeller, he led his team to back-to-back Division I state championships in 2012 and 2013. Before his time there, Rodenberg also served as a head football coach at Roger Bacon High School (Cincinnati), Covington Catholic High School (Park Hills, Ky.) and Archbishop McNicholas High School (Cincinnati). While at Covington Catholic, he led his team to a KSHAA 3A State Championship in 2006.

“I’m a teacher whose classroom is on the football field,” Rodenberg says. “I don’t see myself as being anything different than a biology teacher, a physics teacher, an English teacher or a math teacher. I’m the football teacher. are extensive,” says Lawrence Central athletic director Ryan Banas. “Coach Rodenberg will honor our district values of Achievement, Integrity and Service, will operate with great integrity and will be a role model for our student-athletes.” In order for Rodenberg to leave his headcoaching job in Cincinnati, the opportunity had to be just right. “When I decided to step down at Moeller, I wasn’t going to go be another head coach unless it was at another very highly competitive situation,” he says. After doing some research, though, he quickly learned that this head-coaching job with the Lawrence Central football program

“I’M A TEACHER WHOSE CLASSROOM IS ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD.” was just what he was looking for. “I’d read enough about their conference, and then I started doing some research on Lawrence Central,” Rodenberg says. “I started talking to college coaches, and basically, the word I got was it was a sleeping giant just ready to explode. They have a good foundation of winning, and the last coach had continued that foundation. I wasn’t coming into a program that was broken. I was just coming into a program and had to take it to the next level.”

BUILDING WEALTH. One personalized portfolio at a time.

In order to take Lawrence Central football to the next level, Rodenberg is setting his expectations high. “The goals that I’m always going to put in front of our players are, ‘Let’s win the conference, and then let’s win state,’” he says. “We can sit here and say we don’t want to create high goals. But if we don’t create high goals, then we’re never going to attain high goals.” By setting these standards, his hope is to stay up to par with all the other expectations that are set for students at Lawrence Central High School. “From reading a book and taking a math class to being on the football field, it’s all setting us up to be successful in life, and I just want to add to that,” Rodenberg says. “I don’t want to be this rogue program. I want to be part of a Lawrence Central that develops these guys to go out and become great men.” In the meantime, Coach Rodenberg and the Lawrence Central football team will stay busy preparing for their start to the season later this year on August 18.

THE WAIT IS OVER Ale Emporium Fishers Celebrates Grand Opening Writer / Josh Brown Photographer / Brian Brosmer

The wait is over. Ale Emporium now has a second location serving up its worldfamous wings. Ale Emporium Fishers officially opened its doors March 1 to a packed crowd ready to devour wings. Fans of Ale Emporium’s Hermanaki-style wings rejoiced back in November when it was announced that the famous sports pub would be opening a Fishers/Geist location.

Co-owners Tony Kwiatkowski and Scott Baun are excited for patrons to enjoy the Indy favorite at the new north side location. Perhaps the biggest change for the new venue is the fact that it will now be familyfriendly, compared to Ale Emporium Castleton’s 21 and over rule. Now located in a suburb, Kwiatkowski and Baun viewed the change as a no-brainer and one they hope will bring more community involvement. “Since this is a family-friendly restaurant, the key for us is being a part of the community,” Kwiatkowski says. “This is our 20 / GEIST MAGAZINE / APRIL 2018 / atGeist.com

first attempt at being in a suburb, and we are really excited to be a part of the community. We will have fundraising opportunities in the future.” The original Ale Emporium opened in March of 1982, and, while there have been thoughts of expanding in the past, Baun says they were not necessarily adamant about having to find a new location. When Casler’s Kitchen & Bar officially closed in November though, the pieces fell together for Ale Emporium to take over the spot located at 11501 Geist Pavilion Dr.

“The (Fonseca) family is great,” Baun says. “They absolutely did not foreclose. We actually have a good relationship with them. They are grandparents at this point, and I think they just wanted to spend time with their family. We just lucked into finding this place and, thankfully, it worked out.” The look and feel of the new Fishers & Geist restaurant is similar to the original pub. And don’t worry, the menu is virtually the same — highlighting Ale Emporium’s famous hermanaki wings and pizza. “We try to bring a lot of the original location’s atmosphere and tradition,” Kwiatkowski says. “Ale Emporium is a landmark of Indianapolis and one of the most popular restaurants in the city. We try to bring in, aesthetically, some ties of the original location. The menu will be the same, just slightly scaled back.” For those that frequented Casler’s when it was opened, they will notice some major changes when they walk into the new Ale Emporium location. The bar hasn’t been moved, but it has been updated with stone removed and brick added. The pub has all new floors, paint, lighting and a new 14-foot garage door that will be opened up during the summer time. The kitchen has also been updated with all new floors and equipment, including a double layer pizza oven. Among the greatest changes, the fire pit, which could be seen in Casler’s when you walked in, has been removed to add space for to-go customers at the front of the restaurant. “Aesthetically here, as people will see, we have done a lot with the place,” Kwiatkowski says. “We started off with a short list of things we thought we would do, but as we dove into this we decided to go ahead and renovate and update some things we thought we would be having to do down the road, too. Pretty much the whole place has been remodeled.” The new spot also boasts 60 flat screen TVs and, as a centerpiece behind the bar, a majestic, 165-inch video wall made up of about 10 TVs combined into one. There is

no doubt that the new sports pub will be a hotspot for fans looking to catch a game. “I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the AV upgrade in here,” Kwiatkowski adds. “We have four different video walls that have the highest quality TVs and can all be combined to be one picture or break up into multiple pictures. The AV upgrade is amazing, and I think that will pop as soon as people walk in.”

Newcomer, Jo Lopez, brings a decade of experience in the restaurant business and will lead the new location as the general manager. “I was with Buffalo Wild Wings for 10 years, five of those I spent as the general manager,” Lopez says. “I’ve also worked in the HR side of things, so I have dabbled in all aspects of the restaurant business. We have hired some great managers, and we will bring a great culture and staff that will only elevate what

TLC, Total Lawn Care, Inc. was founded in 1989 by Terry Jungels and Mark Cavin. They had two goals when they started the business. One was to provide a Professional Service using professional products and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) at a reasonable price. The second was to enjoy what they do and provide a superior service. “When we started this business we used Integrated Pest Management (IPM), which allowed us to minimize the amounts of pesticides we used as well as the fertilizers,” Jungels says. “Over time, we have evolved into an organic approach. We are reducing the nitrates and using more biology and less chemistry.” Even when companies use “organic” fertilizers they have to put down a large amount to get to a certain level of nitrogen. It has been shown that a turf plant might only use a small percentage of what is applied and the remaining runs off, vaporizes (ammonification) or turns into nitrates. TLC is trying to build the soil so that it can utilize the nitrogen in the soil and metabolize the products they use. The lawn care company adds a variety of nutrients and biology into the soil with its applications. “We do this to build the carbon and allow the turf to prosper in a more organic soil,” Jungels says. “We want to create some sustainability in the soil to help keep your lawn consistent and looking good. By doing this, we can reduce the amounts of nitrogen we put down.” TLC uses five treatments throughout the year, fewer than many of the other lawn care companies out there. Occasionally, some of the newer lawns or neglected lawns may need a little more, and TLC can always add to the program. TLC recommends good cultural practices like mowing high, watering correctly and aeration to also reduce the amounts of fertility and pesticides needed.

TLC separates its weed controls and fertilizers so they can target the weeds and reduce the total square footage where herbicides are applied. The company uses products like imidacloprid and bifenthrin for insects and grubs. The products are used in pet care for flea and worm control as well as food storage areas and are safe when used properly. “Our staff is professional,” Jungels says. “We have had many of our technicians with us for more than five years, some

more than 20 years. We train throughout the year, and the technician on your lawn will be there on a consistent basis so they can monitor any changes they see. This continuity is important because each year and each season is different. Each year temperatures, dryness, rainfall, humidity, length of season all have an effect on how the lawn responds. As a local company with professional technicians, an Agronomist on staff and a solid relationship with manufacturers, distributors and researchers, we can

modify what we are doing very quickly to provide optimal results.” TLC still has many clients from when they first started up nearly 30 years ago. “We have moved into taking care of their children and other family members,” Jungels says. GLE ANERS FUNDRAI SER PULLS OUT ALL THE STOPS TO RAI SE MONEY FOR YOUTH HUNGER PROGRAMS Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger Photographer / Ron Wise

It’s time for the fifth Annual Wine Women & Shoes Event Benefiting Gleaners Food Bank Indiana Youth Programs. The Gleaners fundraiser and massive shopping extravaganza will be held May 11 from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m, at the Lucas Estate in Carmel, 1143 116th Street Carmel, IN. Wine Women and Shoes is a nationwide fundraising concept introduced in the Indy area almost five years ago. Last year’s Gleaners Wine Women & Shoes raised more than $345,000. This year, Gleaners is aiming for $400,000 - enough to provide 1.2 million meals. That sounds like a lot of money, but one in five Hoosier children does not have

enough to eat. That’s why Wine Women & Shoes raises funds to support Gleaners’ Youth Programs. Three programs make up the youth hunger initiative — BackSacks, School-Based Pantries and Summer Meals for Kids. BackSacks’ Weekend Food for Kids is designed for elementary aged children who may not have enough to eat between school lunch on Friday and breakfast on Monday. Meals are kid friendly, easy to open and require no cooking. School-Based Pantries operates in 53 schools, two of which are in Hamilton County. These pantries provide food for students and their families. Some are open year-round. The Summer Meals for Kids program has INDY METRO / APRIL 2018 / TownePost.com

two components, Summer BackSacks and Family Meal Boxes. Tickets for the event are already on sale. The price is $200 each and gets you into a fun experience, including wine tasting, delicious food bites and unique shopping opportunities. A variety of vendors will be there featuring their merchandise including clothing, jewelry, perfume, beauty products and much more. Plenty of other fundraising opportunities await at the event. Shoe Guys, a crowd favorite, will once again be on hand at the event. More than 20 local guys who are local celebrities, business owners and community leaders, have each committed to raising at least $2,500. The goal for the entire group is $50,000. Guests and fans can vote for their favorite shoe guy and donate to help him

win. The Shoe Guy who raises the most will be named “Sole Man of the Year.” The Shoe Guy who receives the highest number of donations is crowned Mr. Congeniality. Not only will the Shoe Guys be mingling to get donations and votes, they’ll be on hand to serve guests wine or other refreshments and highlight merchandise for sale. “It’s a great cause and a fun way to get involved and give back,” says Shoe Guy and Lake City Bank Branch Manager, Whitney Hamilton, Jr. “I’m amazed at the number of kids affected by hunger, especially during the summer.” Hamilton says he’s a formidable competitor and he plans on going head to head with fellow Shoe Guy and racecar driver, Kristian Aleixo. “He keeps talking smack, but I’m very competitive and I’m going to beat him, hands down,” Aleixo vows. “But mostly, I want to raise money to bring more attention

to childhood hunger. I can relate to it, because after my mom passed when I was 13, I was homeless until age 18.”

The Shoe Guys aren’t the only attraction. Besides all the great shopping, there will be lots of other exciting opportunities to win great prizes.

While some Shoe Guys prepare to duke it out in a little friendly competition, one Shoe “Guests look forward to some of the same traditions every year for the event, but we Guy is doing it for the love of fundraising. keep it fresh by offering new and creative opportunities to engage the guests and raise “I love fundraising. APRIL GARDENING BLISS: PRUNING & PREPPING Writer / Carrie Petty

April bring us 30 days of pure gardening heaven, you know why? Because you are in the honeymoon phase, with dreams of all the good things to come, and let’s face it — we are all glad winter is almost over. Brutal! But you must proceed with a bit of gardener’s cautions, our last hard frost date in the area is always around May 15. I plant like a seasoned gambler, keeping lots of old sheets on standby for frost protection. If there is one thing you will do in the garden this month is work your tail off! Get outside and clean up that winter debris all over the ground and begin to uncover the little green spouts that are underneath all the months of brown. There are many good things to be found in the garden and even some spring blooms. Bulbs will begin to emerge and the buds on most blooming trees and bushes will begin to swell. I fertilize absolutely everything in the month of April. You can get a jump-start on all the spring chores this month, giving you more time to enjoy May and June.

Pruning trees and bushes is a perfect first garden chore. Just be sure not to prune early flowering varieties. Like, Fortyish, Azalea, Rhododendron, Lilac, Dogwood trees or Redbud trees until AFTER they bloom. They all bloom on “old wood” or last season’s growth. You do not want to cut off your blooms. I love the Fiskars line of pruning tools. Sharp and clean blades are a must. And make sure when you make a cut, to make it 0.25 inches above a “bud union” (That place where you see a swell in the branch) and always cut at an angle to allow rainwater to run off the freshly cut opening, so not to cause rot and disease. Then I add a little 10-10-10 granular fertilizer to the base of the tree and make sure there is no mulch touching the base of the trunk. Pruning does a couple of things. It helps to encourage new growth. It cuts out any dead or broken branches, and, most importantly, it maintains the shape of the plant. It is a wonderful way to get up close and personal with your trees and bushes, to really observe 38 / GEIST MAGAZINE / APRIL 2018 / atGeist.com

closely the branching order of things and make a few adjustments. Just like people, we all need a little pruning! For us, May 15 is ‘go time.’ That is the date when you can safely plant your annuals in the ground or sow seeds directly into the soil without the fear of a hard frost. So think of it this way, April is for prepping and May is for planting. But like I said, I am a bit of a rebel, and I start much earlier, and if a threat presents itself, I just cover up what I have put down. Flowers bring extra beauty and happiness into our world, and the best kind of flowering plant is the kind that keeps coming back year after year. I have an entire garden bed dedicated to my favorite — The Perennial. Growing Perennials are one of the easiest ways to garden. I have more than 40 varieties of perennials in my yard, I just love them because they give me a great ‘cutting’ selection all growing season long in which to make beautiful floral arrangements. Because for

me, in the summer months, entertaining and gardening life go hand in hand.

DIVIDING PERENNIALS IS SIMPLE, REALLY: Take your garden spade and dig around the plant and push the spade down under the root ball, then lift up. Keep repeating until you can lift the entire plant out of the ground. Then, take a dividing tool, or two garden pitch forks and work your way through the center of the plant, making new little plant starts. Keep greens and root connected in large chunks of divisions and you will have great success. Now, plant. Just like any new nursery purchase. Dig your hole and plant your new division, be sure to keep the top of the root ball flush with the top of your newly dug hole. Press soil in around the new plant and water in well. You are good to go! It is all part of helping you, “Grow a Beautiful Life!”

APRIL GARDEN CHORES • Go for a walk in the woods to view the spring flowers blooming. • Fill your containers with pansies before annuals arrive in May. • Give your home a deep clean. • Fill your water features after a good cleaning. • Weed, edge, mulch…repeat. • Get hoses out of storage and turn on outside spigots. • Toss out any old tools, hoses and gardening pots. Not worth the effort. • Make new plants by dividing big clumps of perennials.

RUN(317)

Celebrating Indy through running and revelry Writer / Jon Shoulders Photos provided by Run(317)

This year’s RUN(317) event is much more than just a series of mini-marathons for locals to get a little exercise. According to Jeff Graves, owner of Vision Event Management and organizer of the event, it’s a way for Indy residents to get more closely connected to their surroundings and celebrate the city’s unique neighborhoods, bars and restaurants. Graves launched RUN(317) four years ago and says the event has grown markedly each year, currently consisting of five Thursday evening races in separate Indy neighborhoods, starting in May, that feature music and free beverages at the finish line.

Each race is partnered with a local charity, and the event has raised almost $47,000 since 2014. This year’s local charities include Partners in Housing, Energy Krazed, School on Wheels, Kids’ Voice of Indiana and Keep Indianapolis Beautiful. “The nice thing about our event is that it’s for all abilities and it’s all about having a good time,” says Graves, former executive director of the Indy Mini Marathon. “We get tons of walkers and first-timers. We take people through neighborhoods that they had no idea about and have never been to. We want to celebrate the places and charities that are unique to Indianapolis.” Even the distance of each race is a tribute to Indy, at exactly 3.17 miles. 40 / GEIST MAGAZINE / APRIL 2018 / atGeist.com

Graves started small in the event’s first year, holding a single race in Fountain Square and raising money for Keep Indianapolis Beautiful. More than 900 people showed up, and by the time the following year rolled around he’d added two additional races in the Broad Ripple and Mass Ave districts. Carmel Arts & Design District and Monument Circle races were added in 2016, and this year’s five races are spread throughout the summer and early fall. Individuals can sign up for single races, a three-race mini-series or all five races, and those who register for either of the latter receive a free limited edition pullover shirt. Thr3e Wise Men Brewing Co. is the 2018 title sponsor, and this year Graves enlisted

RUN(317) Athletic Annex and Brooks Sports, Inc. to host a V.I.P. area for each race. “Everybody gets two free beers after the race and a commemorative medal and a lot of times it turns into a dance party on the street,” says Graves, a Ball State grad who launched Vision Event Management in 2006 and specializes in planning and logistics for running events of all sizes. “The participants absolutely love the event and they’re so passionate about it because it’s celebrating the 317 area code.” RUN(317) has sold out every year since it began, and while Graves has received massive interest in expanding the event further, he feels five races spread throughout the city provides plenty of variety for Indy residents. “We picked Thursday nights because it’s kind of a kick-off to the weekend,” he adds. “And for first-time marathon runners, it’s a great way to get introduced to running or walking and have a tour of the different unique neighborhoods of the city at the same time.” While RUN(317) races are generally geared toward those over 21, Graves says he’s seen a wide range of age groups register over the years, with the average age being 37, and those under 21 are free to participate. “We didn’t want it to be a typical Saturday morning run at 8:00 a.m.,” Graves says. “We start at 7:00 p.m. and have a fun post-race party that leads into the opportunity for people to go out to the bars and restaurants in the part of town their race is in, which maybe they don’t get to that often.”

MAPLE CREEK GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB 10501 E 21st St. Indianapolis, IN 46229 (317) 894-3343 maplecreekgc.com

Writer / Seth Johnson Photography provided by Josh Brown & Maple Creek

A great deal of history lies within the greens of Maple Creek Golf & Country Club. Located on Indianapolis’ historic east side, Maple Creek is the first 18-hole course designed by world-renowned course architect Pete Dye, making it a notable golf destination for some. To Joe Lorenzano, however, Maple Creek is much more than that. “I actually grew up here,” says Lorenzano, who now works as the membership director at Maple Creek Golf & Country Club. “My family and I joined when I was a teenager, so I essentially learned how to play what I would call strategic golf here because it is a Dye design. He always makes you think out there on the golf course.” Founded in 1961 as Heather Hills Golf and Country Club, Maple Creek Golf & Country Club has become an important part of its community over the decades, playing host to golfers and their loved ones alike. Having recently transitioned from semi-private to private, the club is still striving to be as welcoming and family-friendly as it ever was, offering its members with a fun, relaxing time on and off the course. Since coming on as the course’s PGA pro and general manager a decade ago, Jim Grossi has aimed to maintain the club’s family feel. “We’ve always wanted to present a family atmosphere — a welcoming attribute to the club,” Grossi says. “I really think that’s been a huge part of our success. Our members

feel that it’s a very friendly and welcoming atmosphere in everything we do with our amenities program and the staff that we have on board. I think that’s vital for our current and future success.” In overseeing such a historic course, both Grossi and Lorenzano also want to make sure Maple Creek is the best that it can be. They are always looking out for ways they can improve the club. “Jim and I will visit a facility, and it could be anywhere in the country,” Lorenzano says. “We’ll pick one thing from that facility and try to bring it back to Maple Creek. Everybody has something that they do very well, and there’s always something that we can learn from a head pro at another club that we admire.” Ultimately, the bonds that Grossi 44 / GEIST MAGAZINE / APRIL 2018 / atGeist.com

and Lorenzano have with other PGA professionals across the country allow them to offer Maple Creek members with the best experience possible. “There’s just a mix of clubs that we visit and talk to,” Lorenzano says. “It’s a lifelong connection at the end of the day for PGA professionals across the country, and they’re wanting to help each other out because no facility is perfect. So there’s always room to improve.” In recent years, Maple Creek Golf & Country Club has been improving on their facilities, both on and off the course. Inside the clubhouse, the lower-level Pete Dye’s Pub has received a major makeover. “We’ve done a lot of renovations to try to update, modernize, and make it a place where the members hang out before and

after a round, or late into the evening,” Lorenzano says. Out on the links, efforts to improve player experience are consistently being made as well, whether that’s making tee box adjustments or trimming up trees. At the end of the day, Grossi and Lorenzano simply want to offer up a club that makes their members and the surrounding community proud. “If you look at the east side of Indy, there’s a lot of historical pride,” Grossi says. “Those who live here and have lived here understand that, and they want nothing other than the best for this community. There’s growth in this area, and we want to make sure that continues.” Maple Creek Golf & Country Club is located at 10501 E 21st St. You can visit them online at MapleCreekGC.com or give them a call at 317-894-3343.

Stephanie Weber, Trendy In Indy

F I V E WA R D R O B E T R E N D S TO T R Y T H I S S P R I N G

Writer / Stephanie Weber Photographer / Meryl, Lesley Jane Boutique

At this point in Indiana, most of us are happy to be packing up our Sherpas for the spring and breaking out the sandals and sundresses. The hype surrounding spring style is astounding as these trends are known to set the tone for what we might see the rest of the year. You’ve probably noticed your favorite retailers highlighting their popular floral prints, best-selling sandals and bringing back rompers. Some spring trends may never die, while others just seem to be accentuated for the year. Read on for five spring trends to try for 2018 and how you can incorporate them into your wardrobe.

1. PASTELS Yellow, pink, purple, mauve, light blue, powder blue, lilac, blush. Whatever you want to call it, if it’s light and reminds you of coloring Easter eggs, it’s in. I personally lean towards the blush trend more than any as I feel like it’s one that’s versatile. You can transition it to summer, fall and winter with different layering pieces. Who doesn’t love a basic you can wear all year? That being said, since the Pantone Color of the Year is Ultra Violet, we are seeing a huge influx of lavender for spring. It dominated the runways seen in shows such as Michael Kors and Victoria Beckham. You can find lavender tops and dresses at many of our local retailers. 46 / GEIST MAGAZINE / APRIL 2018 / atGeist.com

Pastels are great to wear with light denim, distressed denim and white bottoms. Pair these with your favorite taupe or cognac sandals.

2. WINDBREAKERS What goes around comes back around and the windbreaker is no different. We started to see this 90s fashion comeback in 2017, but this year it seems that these jackets are a wardrobe must. I think this trend is one that anyone can try because it’s the definition of functional fashion. Windbreakers are just good to have on those chilly, rainy spring days. I’m planning to sport one with a graphic tee, light wash distressed denim and my Adidas

sneakers. Windbreakers are a great compliment to the athleisure trend, perfect for those who have a more casual sense of style.

3. WHITE We often relate white pieces to events surrounding a wedding or to those family beach pictures where everyone is a little sunburnt. But this year, head to toe white is a fashion statement I encourage you to try. Even I wasn’t sure how I felt about this trend at first due to my fair skin and eating-on-the-go lifestyle. However, this color is timeless and encompasses those basic pieces we all need in our closets. If white on white scares you, try implementing it in various staple pieces. For example, I love the white dress I’ve featured here from Lesley Jane. I could pair it with a white sandal, but I could also pair it with taupe, cognac or something more colorful to break it up.

4. PRINTS We’re seeing everything from florals to stripes to bold check prints. I find myself wandering through stores, ending up at the register with all stripes. I love that prints add so much to a simple look. You can use these pieces to layer or stand alone.

MAILED MONTHLY TO MORE THAN 17,000 GEIST HOMES!

I know not everyone loves those bold floral prints, and I want you to know you are not alone. Although I will say, these are fun for a beach getaway. If florals are too much for your style, stripes are a good print go-to.

5. FLATS AND PLATFORMS Popular spring shoes include sandals, casual sneakers, flats, wedges and ankle booties. While I love all of those, we are seeing an increasing demand this year for flats and platforms. Steve Madden is my man for shoes. I know the quality, I know how they fit and I know I will wear them. Dolce Vita and Franco Sarto are two other brands I love. I suggest investing in some type of neutral flat, like mules or loafers, that you can dress up or down. Platforms are a great option if you want something with a little height that’s more comfortable than a stiletto. Spring fashion gives us an opportunity to try something new. I’d challenge you to pick a couple of these trends, head to your favorite local retailer and invest in some new pieces. You might never have guessed you’d fall in love with a white dress paired with a cognac platform sandal.

Ready to Scrum Royal Irish Rugby Seeks 5th National Championship Writer / Lynda Hedberg Thies Photos provided by Royal Irish Rugby

The Royal Irish Rugby program is the top-ranked rugby program in the country according to pre-season polls and is based right here in Indianapolis. The 26-year-old program is looking to win its 5th National Rugby Championship this year. As the 2017 National Champions, they have won four national championships in the past seven years and finished as runner-up, second and third in the other three. The program produces a consistently successful team in terms of trophies, awards and championships. But perhaps as important to the coaches is what the program teaches outside of practice and competition that

makes them champions on and off the field. Looking in from the outside, Rugby requires a high level of athleticism with many playing multiple sports throughout the year. Interestingly, rugby is not an IHSAA sanctioned sport or an NCAA sport. It is considered a club sport. Head Coach Scott Peterson played rugby in high school, college and on the U.S. National team and talks about the demands made on the players. “We expect a lot from our players physically but our greatest mission is to teach boys to become gentlemen, Peterson says. The Royal Irish Rugby program was atGeist.com / APRIL 2018 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 49

founded in 1992 by Cathedral alum, Ryan Feeney, the fireman and artist that created the Peyton Manning statue prominently displayed at the front of Lucas Oil Stadium. Feeney launched the program because he missed full contact sports and, after running cross country and track for three years, he was ready for something different. The program is open to students whose school does not have a Rugby program with the majority of the players coming from Cathedral High School and Bishop Chatard High School. But they have, at times, had students from as many as seven area schools. There are many other notable players from the program, including Cathedral graduate, Jack Doyle the Tight End with

the Indianapolis Colts. Bryce Campbell Bishop Chatard graduate and Joe Schroeder, Cathedral graduate, who can be seen playing on ESPN 3 for U.S.A. Rugby. Campbell played four years at Indiana University and was the former Captain of IU Men’s Rugby for three years. He was awarded the sports highest honor, the Rudy Scholz Award, which is the equivalent of college football’s Heisman Trophy Award. But perhaps Campbell’s greatest success to date was playing for the U.S.A. team winning the Americas Rugby Championship, which was the first international win since 1924.

“We were a ragtag bunch of kids that didn’t realize how strong we were as a group until we found ourselves winning a national championship by more than 50 points,” Campbell says. “It is not all the success that makes Royal Irish Rugby so special, the success is simply a byproduct. It is the combination of the boys, the families and the coaching staff that just works. It is a no b.s. group of people that know how to have fun and know how to win. Some of the relationships I built during my years with RIR will last forever, and I will always be proud of my Royal Irish Rugby heritage.” Rugby is one of the toughest, most physically demanding team sports and is a sport that can be played until you are 40 because there are men’s clubs all over the country. Chris Kaufman, the program’s administrator was responsible for starting the Royal Irish Rugby Society. The Society was designed as a parent

organization to allow the coaches to focus on coaching. The Society handles all administrative work, spirit wear, meals and organizes travel for the team. This is no small undertaking as the teams travel around the United States to participate in tournaments. There are no paid positions, coaches are former players that have a passion for the sport and want to give back. These are guys that work full-time, care deeply about the sport but devote a significant amount of time creating a program that not only produces champions but helps shape young men no matter what they pursue in life. “The program is a fraternity that offers the players an instant network around the world,” Kaufman says. “Whether they choose to play club in college, play at the national or international level or perhaps become a coach, no matter where they live.” Kaufman played after college for a men’s club in San Diego and refers to those teammates and their families as an extended family to him. “The best thing about the program is that after the match, we honor the competition,” Kaufman says. “After the final whistle is blown, we recognize that our opponents also have a deep love for the sport and we become friends. It is just unlike any other sport I have been around in my life.” If you are interested in learning more about Royal Irish Rugby, you can visit them online at .royalirishrugby.com, call 317-313-6467 or email them at royalrishrugbysociety@gmail.com. atGeist.com / APRIL 2018 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 51

Vines for Life

Moves Date and Venue to

Daniel's Vi

eist’s preeminent wine, craft beer, and spirits tasting event has moved to the area’s new hotspot for community events – Daniel’s Vineyard. “We are extremely excited to be hosting our event at Daniel’s Vineyard this year,” says Vines for Life Co-founder, Jeanne Britt. “We have been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to host our event here for quite some time. It is a gorgeous venue, easily accommodates our event’s continual growth and is right here at Geist where our event began eight years ago. We think our guests are really going to love the cozy, elegant environment as much as we do, and the venue change has inspired us to try some fun, new ideas.” Since 2010, the Vines for Life event has raised nearly $200,000 for three Geist cancer charities — Creating Hope, Indy SurviveOars and Team Luke. One hundred percent of the proceeds helps these charities to do what they do best - bring compassion, peace and joy to patients receiving treatment for cancer through art, music, meditation and camaraderie. The 8th annual event is coming up May 11. “All three charities are 100 percent volunteer-run,” says Tom Britt, Co-founder. “When people get to meet these three charities and see the good they are spreading, they see really quickly why we are so passionate about their causes.” Ray & Adam Cox of Elite Bev are the Host Sponsors again era ges in 2018

Daniel’s Vineyard opened April 2017. The family-owned vineyard was started by Daniel and Kimberly Cook and can host more than 300 guests in its upper banquet and an additional 75 on the balcony, which gives a panoramic view of the vineyard. Downstairs, an expansive tasting room gives visitors a chance to see the production area next to a large community room used to host all sorts of events. Over the last year, the McCordsville facility has become a popular pick for weddings, celebrations, community events and more. Elite Beverages will once again host the event which begins with a private Sponsor Reception at 6 pm followed by the Tasting event at 7 pm. We will be tasting wines from California and Oregon: Trefethen Family Vineyards, Cakebread Cellars, Black Stallion Winery, Cooper Mountain Vineyards and Mauritson Wines and our own local Daniel’s Vineyard. Also delicious food from local favorites: Stone Creek Dining Co., FoxGardin, Taxman Brewing Co., Murphy’s Craft House, Ale Emporium and more. Local craft beers with favorites Taxman Brewing Co. and Wooden Bear. On the balcony, Elite Beverages will host a cigar and bourbon bar for those looking to relax and take in the views of the vineyard. Tito’s Vodka will be sampling signature cocktails as well. Also new this year is a different twist on the silent auction – A “Charity Boutique.” In lieu of bidding on unique items, our guests can shop the items and “buy it now.” “This allows people to enjoy the tastings and socializing without being distracted by bidding on their smartphones,” Jeanne adds. Parking will be free and attire is casual elegance. Tickets are $75 per person and space is limited to 275 guests. To purchase tickets, visit VinesForLife.org. Daniel’s Vineyard is located at 9061 N. Carroll Rd, McCordsville (northeast corner of 86th and Carroll Roads).
