Owners Alex and Geneva Kutin (left) and agents Courtenay Crockett & Amanda Steele.
Travel Leaders Celebrates 25th Anniversary Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Amy Payne
Travel planning can be overwhelming, and for the past 25 years the agents at Indianapolis-based Travel Leaders have been helping to take the stress off of individuals and families in preparation for vacations, cruises, destination weddings, honeymoons and family excursions. “People think they can go out and do it on their own and save money, but we’ve proven that wrong many, many times,” says founder and owner Alex Kutin, who began the company back in 1994 on Fox Road and relocated to his current Fall Creek Road location five years later. “People have found that by using us they save money and time because we’re doing all the legwork and have the knowledge they need.”
Shortly before retiring from a 25-year career with appliance company Jenn-Air, Kutin and his wife Geneva decided to use their own passion for travel to help others, and since then the couple has assisted clients with trips around the world including Europe, Mexico, the Caribbean and more.
sightseeing recommendations for clients, as well as shore excursion recommendations for cruises. Kutin’s team also consults with several tour operator companies who are able to recommend hotels in various cities worldwide and who can help if a client has problems or issues during a trip.
“The first step is sitting down with a customer and finding out what kind of trip they have in mind and, based on budget, we will help hammer out the details,” Kutin explains. “We plan our customers’ trips as if it’s going to be our own trip and will find ways to save money where the client might want to.”
“With the internet and iPhone apps, a lot of people have found that there is just information overload and it’s causing people to be too overwhelmed,” Crockett says. “We get a lot of people who say they started off doing things on their own but ended up wanting the expertise. It’s easy to book things online yourself, but then you don’t have somebody to talk to that’s been to the destination and has that knowledge.”
The Indy Travel Leaders team, which includes Alex and Geneva along with well-traveled agents Amanda Steele and Courtenay Crockett, can also make 20 / 2019 DIRECTORY AND RELOCATION GUIDE
Kutin adds that the travel agent industry has become more competitive and
challenging due to the internet and smartphone applications, but he says direct, one-on-one service from an experienced agent remains crucial to get the most out of a domestic or international travel experience. “The business has changed a lot, and it’s still evolving with a lot of people out there doing their plans all alone with no assistance,” Kutin says. “Ultimately you’re going to save time and money if you have help with planning. We have the client’s best interest in mind each and every time. “Hotels, vacation package companies and cruises include travel agent commissions in their published prices,” Kutin adds. “If you do all the work by booking yourself on the internet, they pocket the commission. By using our agency you will get the customer service you deserve and, therefore, not worry if everything is completed correctly because that is our responsibility. Plus,
you have a local source to ask all of your questions. Remember — You cannot Google experience.” Ready to explore options for your next trip? Visit the Indy Travel Leaders team at 9745 Fall Creek Road in Indianapolis. You can also call 317-913-3300 or go to indytravelleaders.com for more information.

MAPLE CREEK GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB 10501 E 21st St. Indianapolis, IN 46229 (317) 894-3343 maplecreekgc.com
Writer / Seth Johnson Photography provided by Josh Brown & Maple Creek
A great deal of history lies within the greens of Maple Creek Golf & Country Club. Located on Indianapolis’ historic east side, Maple Creek is the first 18-hole course designed by world-renowned course architect Pete Dye, making it a notable golf destination for some. To Joe Lorenzano, however, Maple Creek is much more than that. “I actually grew up here,” says Lorenzano, who now works as the membership director at Maple Creek Golf & Country Club. “My family and I joined when I was a teenager, so I essentially learned how to play what I would call strategic golf here because it is a Dye design. He always makes you think out there on the golf course.” Founded in 1961 as Heather Hills Golf and Country Club, Maple Creek Golf & Country Club has become an important part of its community over the decades, playing host to golfers and their loved ones alike. Having recently transitioned from semi-private to private, the club is still striving to be as welcoming and family-friendly as it ever was, offering its members with a fun, relaxing time on and off the course. Since coming on as the course’s PGA pro and general manager a decade ago, Jim Grossi has aimed to maintain the club’s family feel. The club offers much more, of course, than just golf. All-inclusive memberships are available and include amenities like the club’s newly renovated pool, discounts in the pro shop and invitations to social events like the annual Luau Party, Yoga on the Course, Night Golf and more.
“We’ve always wanted to present a family atmosphere — a welcoming attribute to the club,” Grossi says. “I really think that’s been a huge part of our success. Our members feel that it’s a very friendly and welcoming atmosphere in everything we do with our amenities program and the staff that we have on board. I think that’s vital for our current and future success.” In overseeing such a historic course, both Grossi and Lorenzano also want to make sure Maple Creek is the best that it can be. They are always looking out for ways they can improve the club. “Jim and I will visit a facility, and it could be anywhere in the country,” Lorenzano says. “We’ll pick one thing from that facility and try to bring it back to Maple Creek. Everybody has something that they do very well, and there’s always something that we can learn from a head pro at another club that we admire.”
“There’s just a mix of clubs that we visit and talk to,” Lorenzano says. “It’s a lifelong connection at the end of the day for PGA professionals across the country, and they’re wanting to help each other out because no facility is perfect. So there’s always room to improve.” In recent years, Maple Creek Golf & Country Club has been improving on their facilities, both on and off the course. Inside the clubhouse, the lower-level Pete Dye’s Pub has received a major makeover, and the club has completely updated the women’s locker rooms as well. “We’ve done a lot of renovations to try to update, modernize, and make it a place where the members hang out before and after a round, or late into the evening,” Lorenzano says.
Out on the links, efforts to improve player experience are consistently being made as well, whether that’s making tee box adjustments or trimming up trees. Recently, Ultimately, the bonds that Grossi Maple Creek has increased accessibility to and Lorenzano have with other PGA professionals across the country allow them the golf course by cutting down on other to offer Maple Creek members with the best events and outings. In addition to a newly sodded tee box, they have also designed a experience possible. 22 / 2019 DIRECTORY AND RELOCATION GUIDE
synthetic turf hitting area engineered and constructed specifically to replicate “real turf feel” conditions. At the end of the day, Grossi and Lorenzano simply want to offer up a club that makes their members and the surrounding community proud. “If you look at the east side of Indy, there’s a lot of historical pride,” Grossi says. “Those who live here and have lived here understand that, and they want nothing other than the best for this community. There’s growth in this area, and we want to make sure that continues.” Maple Creek Golf & Country Club is located at 10501 E 21st St. You can visit them online at MapleCreekGC.com or give them a call at 317-894-3343.

Celebrating Community & Camaraderie In Running Shoes Writer / Lisa Hancock Photos provided by RUN(317)
Entering its fifth year, the 2019 RUN(317) Series is more than just an excuse to log a few miles on Thursday evenings. Jeff Graves, president and founder of Vision Event Management who produces the event, says the series affords participants the opportunity to get re-acquainted with Indy’s unique neighborhoods on a more intimate basis. Since Graves launched the RUN(317) Series in the market five years ago, the event has experienced significant growth. In its inaugural year, more than 900 athletes participated in a single race in Fountain Square to benefit Keep Indianapolis Beautiful. The sophomore year, races in the vibrant districts of Broad Ripple and Mass Ave were added to the calendar. Carmel Arts & Design District and Monument Circle races joined in 2016. Various road work projects precluded a Carmel Arts & Design District course from returning to the 2019 lineup, but Graves announced that The Village of WestClay in Carmel is enthusiastic about being a new host location this year.
Comprising five monthly Thursday evening races in different Indianapolis neighborhoods, the series spans three seasons. Kicking off in May and skipping September, the fifth and final finish line tape falls in October. Participants are encouraged to register early as every race has sold out in advance of race day the past three years. Complementing the 3.17-mile run/walk at each event is an invigorating festival-like atmosphere unique to each respective race community. Neighborhood restaurants, bars and shops are showcased, many of which offer participant specials. A live DJ spins throughout the evening to keep the vibe right and energy high. Yard games like cornhole, jumbo Jenga and giant Connect 4 keep participants engaged during the post party as do various vendors with giveaways and register-to-wins. “RUN(317) is a community of its own,” says Graves, former executive director of the Indy Mini-Marathon and 500 Festival VP of Events. “You’ll see all athletic abilities out on the course, from competitive athletes and recreational runners to first-timers and walkers. 40 / 2019 DIRECTORY AND RELOCATION GUIDE
RUN(317) participants celebrate being active, our communities and each other, unlike any group I have ever witnessed. And they do it all to benefit others.” Since 2014, RUN(317) has raised more than $62,000 for various charities across Indianapolis. Each race has a designated local non-profit. This year’s organizations include Partners in Housing, Energy Krazed, School on Wheels, Kids’ Voice of Indiana, and Keep Indianapolis Beautiful. “We’ve offered a substantial selection of free branded premium items and merchandise to purchase over the years so there are a lot of RUN(317) logos on the street,” Graves says. “You’ve heard about Jeep owners having their own wave? It’s like those of us in the RUN(317) inner circle have our own nod. We can’t help but smile, and it’s just the coolest thing to experience.” Registration is open now. Participants can sign up for a single race, the three-race mini-series or the five-race full series. Those registering for the 3 or 5-race series receive a limited-edition, pocketed super soft hoodie, in addition to the individual race perks of a commemorative medal
which triples as a refrigerator magnet and a bottle opener, a coupon valid for a free 6-inch Penn Station sub, a RUN(317) collector sticker and two complimentary craft beers from Thr3e Wise Men Brewing Co. for those age 21 or older. Free water and Gatorade are also offered as nonalcoholic alternatives. Scotty’s Brewhouse returns as the event’s title sponsor, with Athletic Annex and Brooks Running offering participants the option to upgrade to the VIP Experience. Graves, a Ball State alum who launched Vision Event Management in 2006 as a firm specializing in the planning and logistics for active lifestyle events of all sizes says it’s critical for promoters to offer events that differentiate themselves from others. Graves adds that establishments along the courses enjoy the patronage of the athletes who often eat, drink and shop post-race. “RUN(317) Thursday night runs support an early physical kick-off to the emotional
‘hurry up weekend and get here’ thoughts we often have,” Graves adds. “Get out, get active and pay it forward in the community. Feeling good about yourself makes it that much easier to contribute at work on Friday. And if you cannot compete for whatever reason, you can always make an impact by volunteering.” This year’s race schedule includes The Circle on May 16, Broad Ripple on June 13, Mass Ave. on July 18, The Village of WestClay in Carmel on Aug. 29 and
Fountain Square race on Oct. 10. There are also side competitions such as “Beat the Clock” and “Fastest Runner,” where participants can challenge themselves to win additional prizes. To register or get complete details on RUN(317), including past year photos, volunteer information, competition rules, VIP upgrade and an archive of race results courtesy of Old National Bank, please visit RUN317.com.

We have been in the lead of using more biology and less chemistry. One of our founders is an Agronomist from Purdue, a soil scientist. He works with the team at TLC and with various manufacturers, distributors and developers of lawn products to find the right products and combinations to build the soil. We are utilizing biology to replace some of the chemistry as we build the soil. Many of the newer lawns have poor soil, a clay-pea gravel mix that leaves a lot to be desired. These soils have low nutrient value as well as they bind up the nutrients that tend to be there. Just using organic fertilizers doesn’t help reduce the amount of nitrogen being put on the lawns, it’s just another form of it. With the use of only organic fertilizers, we still have that whole nitrogen cycle which ends up with ammonification and nitrates into the water system. By using biosolids and a variety of things like kelp, humic and fulvic acids, amino acids, mychorrhizea, micro nutrients and other ingredients we are increasing the microbial activity in the rhizosphere. When we increase the microbial activity we are getting nutrients released from the soil which are then more readily available to the turf plant through its root system. The soil and the root system both have a negative charge, and when we can break off these nutrients with a positive charge from the soil they can then be taken up by the root system. By adding carbon into the soil we increase the surface area where these nutrients can also be stored and not just passed through the soil. Some of these products also cause small microfractures of the soil particles leading to more surface area to hold onto these nutrients as well. We practice IPM, Integrated Pest Management, and with our low pressure, low volume applications we can reduce our pesticides as well. We have a great team. Many of our team members have been with us for more than five years, up to 25. We have seven guys with more than 25 years of experience in the field.
