The month of May is filled with excitement in Indy. If you live near the Speedway area, you can hear the roar of the Indy cars most of the month while the city prepares for the greatest spectacle in racing. In the early years of the Indianapolis 500 running, men showed up in suits while women wore skirts or dresses to observe one of the most exhilarating sports in the world. Most spectators wore fashionable hats as well.
Since that time, casual trends have taken over, but not every event surrounding the race is so lax. I’ve created five style tips for your month of May wardrobe in Indy. 1. PLAN AHEAD
The local boutiques and Indy shops generally stock tanks and tees with fun race phrases, but, if you miss the launch of these, you might find yourself out of luck. Hoosiers unite over this race and love to sport their race-day gear so grab it early. 8 / GEIST MAGAZINE / MAY 2018 / atGeist.com
2. THINK ABOUT THE WEATHER
I can recall races where I was in jeans, sneakers, and a rain coat. But if it’s a year like the last race, I’d suggest shorts and a tank top. The weather in May in Indianapolis can be a bit tricky, so check it out before heading to any race events. 3. CONSIDER THE EVENT
The 500 Festival supports several events leading up to the race all month long. If you’re heading to the parade, perhaps a checkered
sundress is in the cards for you. Maybe you’re headed to Kids’ Day downtown on a 75-degree, sunny day. I’d say shorts, a lightweight tee, and your most comfortable tennis shoes are a safe bet. Joining in on Breakfast at the Brickyard? Plan to wear something a little dressy such as a chiffon top with black high-waist pants and your favorite earrings. If you’re headed to a backyard BBQ to celebrate the race, a sundress or top and skirt combination is perfect. At the track on race day, you’ll see a variety, but my go-to is a romper or shorts with a breathable tank. Just don’t forget your sunscreen.

4. UTILIZE ACCESSORIES
Utilize accessories. Accessories can go so far for race month. The women in my family enjoy black and white neckerchiefs, checkered flag earrings, and black pendant necklaces. Also, you can never go wrong with a hat. You can find baseball caps with the IMS emblem at the track on race day if needed. Don’t forget that red earrings can also add that pop of color to a black and white outfit.
In 2014, I had the opportunity to serve as a 500 Festival Princess. Growing up as a race fan, this was a huge honor to be able to experience all of the events leading up to the Indy 500 and to act as an ambassador for race month in our city. If you have the opportunity to attend a 500 Festival event or the race itself, I highly recommend it. The Indy 500 brings our community together to celebrate a race known around the globe that we are able to host right here in this city.
5. W HEN IN DOUBT, WEAR BLACK AND WHITE
If you aren’t sure what to wear, black and white is a safe bet. This color combo is also hot for spring this year which makes shopping a breeze. If it’s sunny, I’d avoid an all-black look or black tops since

Singh bought the restaurant and rebranded as the LakeHouse at Geist last February after more than a month of renovations and changes to try and give the spot more appeal. For Wolfies, the Geist restaurant will be its fifth Hamilton County location. The Wolfs jumped into the restaurant business in 2004 with their first location in Noblesville and have spots in Carmel, Fishers and Westfield as well. The first Wolfies location, which is still thriving today, is located on Morse Reservoir. The experience the Wolfs have gained in already running a successful waterside restaurant for nearly 15 years played a significant role in their decision to go after the Geist location.
“That experience was a major part of the decision for sure,” Scott says. “For us, it was a no-brainer. We have that experience with the Morse location and have already made all of our mistakes and learned from them up there. We know what works and what doesn’t work. We have learned a lot in the last 14 years of being on the water (in Noblesville) and how to staff, how to operate and the seasonal aspect of it. It can be a challenge. We understand how to make it work, though.” The Geist location will instantly become the largest one for Wolfies. Scott says the kitchen alone is twice the size of the one the Wolfs have at their Morse Reservoir restaurant. The Geist spot also houses one of the bigger outdoor dining decks in the Indy area and can seat about 200. The inside seating, including upstairs and downstairs, can seat approximately 350 people. “It is a great building and probably has one of the best views around here for a
waterside restaurant,” Scott says. “We are going to have a lot of activities and familyfriendly events we plan to host. We are excited about this entire venture, and we’ve had a lot of people call and reach out about how excited they are, too.” Once they gained ownership of the property, the Wolfs hit the ground running with renovations and updates over the last two months. The restaurant has completely new kitchen equipment. One of the biggest changes is the bar has moved from the back of the restaurant to the middle to showcase it more when guests walk through the doors. Wolfies Grill at Geist also has an open-air theme and retractable doors. The outside, covered patio will also have retractable windows to continue the theme. “This spot has never had an open-air concept,” Scott says. “If you are on the lake, this is what you want. You want
the air blowing, the breeze in your face, overlooking the lake and hearing the boats. If it starts to sprinkle or rain, guests don’t have to worry because we can simply drop down the covered doors and windows.” If beer is what you are looking for, Wolfies at Geist will have plenty of variety with 16 craft beers on tap inside and outside with a beer garden on the deck for patrons to enjoy. The beer garden includes an all-new deck and bar top. Wolfies has also added a raw bar showcased in the front of the restaurant with fresh oysters, shrimp and more — a feature that will be exclusive to the Geist location. The restaurant will have live music throughout the weeks, weekends and holidays as well as family-friendly events too. Perhaps the most unique change to the location is Wolfies Grill at Geist will have a functional, outdoor kitchen. That means
boaters will be able to place an order, pull up to the deck, hop off their boat and grab carryout food, beer and ice to take back on the lake. “We are really driving that come off your boat have a burger and a beer kind of idea,” Scott says. “Come up, give your name and we will load you up and get you ready to head back out on the water. With all of these changes, I think it is going to be really exciting.” The Wolfs believe the renovations and changes, coupled with an experienced staff, will bring stability and longevity to the Fall Creek location. The Wolfs are bringing their long-time GM at their Morse Reservoir location to man the Geist location. Wolfies also has four other veteran managers on board, meaning the restaurant will run with five managers to keep operations and service running smoothly and efficiently. “The support system will be here that maybe wasn’t quite there in the past,” Scott says. “I’ve got probably some of the most loyal employees. Many of them have been with us for nearly 10 years. We have been blessed with some of the best staff and best people, and we don’t turn them over.”

Every year, the 500 Festival and its correlating events impact 500,000 people. With such a massive reach, the humble festival team relies heavily on help from devoted volunteers to make sure everything goes off without a hitch. From a mini-marathon to a world-class parade, the 500 Festival executes about 50 different events each year. Of course, the point of these events is to celebrate the spirit and legacy of the Indianapolis 500, the world’s greatest spectacle in racing. “The 500 Festival dates back to 1957,” says
Sabrina List, 500 Festival vice president of marketing and communication. “It was actually started by a group of volunteers that were involved within the community that thought, ‘Every year, we host this big race, the Indy 500. There should be more that the community should be doing in coming together and celebrating it.’”
So in 1957, the 500 Festival was born.
The idea for the festival was actually prompted by a similar festival in Kentucky that was created to celebrate the Kentucky Derby, aptly named the Kentucky Derby Festival. “The Kentucky Derby Festival is an organization that’s similar to ours,” List says. “They thought, ‘Look, they do this in Kentucky. We should do something similar.’”
While they may no longer have a square dance, the annual parade now draws hundreds of thousands of people to Downtown Indianapolis every year. In addition to this grand event, there are also several other affiliated 500 Festival occurrences, including a mini-marathon, Kid’s Day and much more. In total, the festival relies on 7,000 volunteers to make

“It all started with our parade, believe it or not,” List says. “They got together, and they said, ‘Alright, let’s throw a parade, and then we’ll also have a square dance.’ So that’s how it all started and it all came together, with a parade and a square dance.”
these events happen. “Volunteers are the lifeblood of our organization,” List says. “Our organization was built upon volunteers. That’s how we got started, and that is not lost on us. We are a small, nimble team of full-time employees at the festival, and we could not execute what we do without the dedication and enthusiasm of our festival volunteers.” On their website, the 500 Festival has a way you can browse all of the potential volunteer positions. “You can see every single job, the time requirement for it and the description of what’s involved with it,” List says. Over the years, they’ve had all kinds of volunteers rave about their experience working for the 500 Festival. “We provide a really positive volunteer experience, and we have a really, really high volunteer retention rate, along with pretty good word of mouth,” List says. “About 92 percent of our volunteers say that they would recommend the volunteer program to family or friends.” Volunteers don’t leave empty-handed either. In fact, they receive a slew of fantastic, oneof-a-kind benefits for their work. “You get pretty good perks for volunteering with us,” List adds. “You get a shirt and pin, but you also get an invitation to come to our volunteer appreciation day. That’s held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on the Saturday of qualifications for the Indy 500.” As a part of this volunteer appreciation event, participants are truly treated to a very special day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. “You get two free tickets to qualifications that day,” List says. “You get free parking for qualifications that day. And, you can also sign up to do the tour of the garages and a tour of the pits. IndyCar driver Pippa Mann wants you to become a donor. Recently, Mann held a press conference on March 20 at the Indiana State Museum to announce a new partnership with Donate Life Indiana and unveiled the renderings for her racecar in this year’s 102nd running of the Indianapolis 500. Donate life Indiana will be the primary sponsor on Mann’s No. 63 Dale Coyne Racing car.
The conference kicked off Mann’s initiative to educate new drivers about donor registration — a topic that is near and dear to her. Mann was teammates and friends with the late Bryan Clauson, who died in 2016 after a wreck that flipped his car in the Belleville Nationals midget race. Clauson, a Noblesville High School alum, was a registered organ donor and his contribution helped save five lives. Clauson’s story left a profound impact on the racing world and sparked the Driven2SaveLives campaign as well. atGeist.com / MAY 2018 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 19
“I am incredibly proud to be partnering with Donate Life both on and off the racetrack,” Mann says. “I get to drive a car that has special meaning to me. I was teammates with Bryan Clauson, and we became good friends. To learn that Bryan was an organ donor, that was very meaningful and left an impact on me. This is bigger than any one person, though. This is about everyone who is on the donor waiting list. It is about being able to give hope and life to someone else.” Ever since Bryan’s passing, Mann has been supporting the Clauson family in
many ways, including being a part of the Driven2SaveLives campaign. When the family found out that Mann was partnering with Donate Life Indiana this season to put this cause at the forefront, both on and off the racetrack, they were humbled. “We are really excited,” says Taylor McLean, Bryan’s little sister. “Pippa has always been a wonderful friend to Bryan. From the very start, she was so gracious and wonderful to our family and to him. For her to honor Bryan in this way and continue his legacy, we’re humbled and proud and excited that Bryan gets to ride along with her in May.” Prior to Bryan’s passing, McLean says that organ donation really wasn’t something the family talked about or discussed much. Because of how many lives he was able to save after his death though, the Clausons realized first-hand the importance and impact of checking yes and becoming an organ donor.

Because of his decision to become an organ donor, Bryan Clauson helped save five lives after his tragic death in 2016.
“I am extremely proud of that decision Bryan made to become a donor, and he did it in such a way that was really who he is — he never told anybody that was what he wanted to do if something were to happen to him, he just did it,” McLean says. “To know that there were five other families on the other end of it that were able to celebrate life the day we said goodbye to Bryan, that is something that gives us peace and helps us through those tough days when we are missing him.” McLean believes so strongly in the donor cause that she actually now works for the Indiana Donor Network serving as its Community Relations Coordinator. A major goal for the organization is to educate teenagers on the importance of becoming an organ donor and why they should check yes for that status as they get their drivers license. “If we can at least start the conversation with these young teens, or anybody really, about the positive things that can come from being a donor, that is all we really want to do,” she says. “We want them to make an educated decision and talk about it with their families. “Working for the Indiana Donor Network has given me a way to honor my brother every single day,” McLean adds. “It never feels like 20 / GEIST MAGAZINE / MAY 2018 / atGeist.com

Daniel’s Vineyard will host the inaugural Kassie Braun Sip. Bark. Repeat. on June 3 in honor of Braun, who died tragically November 2017.

EVENT TO HONOR KASSIE BRAUN If you visited Daniel's Vineyard last summer, you may have seen a smiling, friendly girl in the building taking pictures with her camera, or in the vines grading grapes, or even in the tasting room charming the customers. This girl was Kassie Braun. Kassie was a marketing and public relations intern for Daniel’s. She worked alongside the owners of Daniel’s, the Cook family.
For a nominal fee, people could spend a beautiful summer day in Daniel’s picturesque vineyard sipping wine with man's best friend at their sides. This occasion was not only a fundraiser, but it also helped raise awareness for the need of pet adoptions in our community. The Humane Society brought dogs to this event that could be adopted. Ultimately, Sip. Bark. Repeat. was so popular that Daniel’s decided to make it a monthly event. On the first Saturday of every month, Daniel's donated 100 percent of the ticket proceeds to various local dog rescue locations or shelters.
In her role as an intern, Kassie created Daniel’s first Pour it Forward event- Sip. Bark. Repeat. Partnering with the Hamilton County Humane Society, she established a special day for dogs — her favorite animals. She gathered sponsors, specialty product vendors, food trucks, and musical talent. The community was invited to come out for the day with their favorite four-legged friends to help raise money for the Humane Society.
While the monthly Sip. Bark. Repeat. will carry on as usual, April through November this year, the June fundraiser will see an important change. On Sunday, June 3, Daniel’s Vineyard will graciously host the first annual Kassie Braun Sip. Bark. Repeat. in memory of the vibrant girl who tragically past away while studying abroad in November 2017. The Cook family was eager to do something to honor Kassie's memory.

"Kassie made such a profound impression on the Daniel's Vineyard family, and we are honored to continue her mission of helping to provide a meaningful impact on our community,” says co-owner, Kim Cook. For those who didn’t know Kassie, she was as warm and caring of a girl as anyone could ever meet. Her giving nature was evident even as a young girl when she would cheerfully give away her birthday gifts every year to an adopted family. She would regularly grow out her beautiful hair so that she could cut it off and donate to the organizations Locks of Love and Children for Hair Loss. Before graduating from Cathedral High School in 2015, she led the underclassmen retreats and spearheaded the school's annual Walk for a Purpose. Her impressive leadership activities and community volunteer efforts earned her a full ride scholarship to St. Edward's in Austin, Texas. In order to carry on Kassie's legacy of giving, her family and friends have set up KassieKares.org. Its mission is to "promote philanthropic student involvement through international travel and activities that allow young leaders to engage in meaningful experiences that positively impact children in the developing world.” One of the organization's projects is the construction of the Kassie Braun Memorial Secondary School in Abakaliki, Nigeria. In her too brief life, Kassie traveled around the world striving to learn about different cultures and societies so that she could better help the people who live there. She was eager to embrace young impoverished children and deeply cared about making their lives better. “Perhaps the biggest tragedy of all is that Kassie never got a chance to fully realize her dreams of giving back to others,” says Chalene Braun, Kassie’s mother. “After she fell, so very many people expressed their desire to help with KassieKares. Together we can carry on her spirit of philanthropy, starting with the 1st Annual Kassie Braun Sip. Bark. Repeat. community event.” The June 3 event will be a fantastic way to come together as a community for a great cause. In addition to wine and wine slushies for the adults, there will be live music all day, with performances by Corey Cox and Scotty Randolph and a large silent auction. Plenty of food trucks like FoxGardin will be present and, of course, a free puppy kissing booth and pup cups! Roberts Camera’s ability to thrive in the photography, lighting and electronics retail business for 60 years has involved much more than just keeping up with industry technology that seems to evolve almost daily. Meredith Reinker, marketing and human resources director, says the Indianapolisbased, family-owned company’s willingness to adapt its business model to customer habits and shopping methods has been just as important to its success as keeping up with the camera and lighting industry’s ongoing technological advancements.
“The jewelry wasn’t doing great at the time so they started to pick up additional lines – service merchandise catalogs were how people shopped back then so they basically became a catalog showroom,” Reinker says. “One of my grandfather’s employees at the time was a high schooler who was taking a photography class and told my grandfather he could sell cameras. It was good timing in the sense that film was really evolving at that point and film cameras were getting popular, and then, of course, eventually digital took us into the next era.” Since its founding, Roberts Camera has continually found effective ways to reach beyond its Indy customer base, from a thriving mail-order business through the 1970s and 1980s to a successful sales presence through its official website, which was launched back in 1997. In 2012 the Roberts staff began a buy, sell and trade sister company called UsedPhotoPro, which deals exclusively in used camera equipment primarily online.
The company, which offers a full range of new and used photography, audio, video and lighting gear and currently operates two brick-and-mortar locations in Carmel and downtown Indianapolis, was founded by Reinker’s grandfather Robert Pallman as a modest jewelry business on South Capitol Avenue in August of 1957. sales and customer service that has helped Roberts Camera stay in business in a time where many camera shops have closed their doors due to dwindling sales. “Over the past 10 years, the evolution has been going fast with how people shop,” Reinker says. “Retail has changed so much as it’s gone from people having to walk into a retail store to shopping online – our sales now are about 60 percent online and 40 percent retail. So again, it’s that combination of staying with the technology and then how people actually approach retail.” To commemorate 60 years of service in Indianapolis, Reinker and her 64 full-time and part-time Roberts co-employees – many of whom have been with the company for 20-plus years – held an in-store celebration in August with special deals and promotions as well as free photography classes and camera cleanings. “Twice a year we also do a spring and fall photo expo where we bring in our manufacturer representatives, and tech reps from Nikon, Canon, Panasonic and all those types of brands,” Reinker adds.
“We offer free classes all day long, which helps to promote the classes that we offer regularly. We usually have anywhere from 10 to 12 classes a month for every level of photographer from fundamentals of photography up to specialty lighting and that kind of stuff.” Reinker adds that the explosion in iPhone camera use has had a twopronged effect on her industry, phasing out less expensive, pointand-shoot cameras while at the same time increasing interest in higher-end equipment and accessories. “The iPhone has gotten a lot of people interested in photography that otherwise might not have been, especially with social media where everybody is a photographer now,” she says. “So, we have people coming in now that have been using their iPhone for a long time but want to take that next step and get better images with better equipment.” Reinker believes the company is primed for another 60 years of success as long as it remains adaptive and flexible in the face of an ever-changing marketplace. “As Indianapolis has grown we’ve received a ton of support. Indianapolis has a very strong and vibrant community of photographers,” Reinker says. “In a time where photography has changed drastically, I think our customer base and the support we get from Indiana as a whole is awesome. Indy is a great place to be.”

This is also a great time to use a granulated fertilizer on your Tulips and bulbs to strengthen their roots for next year’s bloom. Gardening is always about looking forward. Many people feel running can be a fun partner sport, and few know that better than Elizabeth Morgan. In July of 2015, Morgan adopted Bella, a black lab, from the Vanderburgh Humane Society (VHS) after coming to a realization. An avid runner since 2002, she’d begun training at odd hours on sparse country roads in her hometown of Evansville, and it occurred to her that having a pet along for some partnership and protection might be a sensible idea. “I fell in love with her when we went to see her,” Morgan says. “We got her home when she was about six months, and I started running with her when she was one. I started bringing her to my cool-downs and slowly increased her distances.” Before long Morgan had begun taking the dog along for competitive half-marathon races, and Bella couldn’t get enough. The duo now runs six days per week, typically covering 35 to 45 miles in a week-long span, and Morgan says even that level of training often leaves the dog wanting more. “The one day off a week is horrible for her,” she says with a chuckle. “In the summer we’ll get up at 3 or 4 a.m. because she doesn’t do real well in the heat. We’ll do one long run a week, and then the rest of the days we’ll do speed workouts and tempo runs. She does it all.” At only three years old Bella is now a marathon veteran, having completed 11 half marathons and several 5K and 10-mile races. The duo recently broke their personal half-marathon record with a time of 1:43:01 in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and will be training throughout the summer for their second full marathon taking place in the fall. “She has so much energy - she gets up every morning and starts following me around the house until I get my running shoes on and ready to go,” says Morgan, a University of Southern Indiana graduate. “It’s just so much fun to run with her, and take her for

races when I’m allowed.” While Morgan remains passionate about competitive running, her true enjoyment when stepping up to each starting line now lies in the unique bond she’s forged with Bella. “It’s not about my running anymore - it’s more about being a partnership and making sure she’s safe and everything,” Morgan says. “The heat is the hardest thing on her. We stop when we need to for water breaks, and slow it down sometimes.” Last summer Morgan launched Run Bella Run to the Rescue, a nonprofit campaign, to raise money for the VHS and increase awareness of the importance of rescuing high-energy dogs — many of which Morgan says do not get adopted from shelters. Last year Morgan successfully raised $3,200 for the Humane Society, and her goal for 2018 is $10,000. “The Run Bella Run term came from when I first started training her,” Morgan says. “I would yell out, ‘Run Bella run!’ and get her to pick up the pace. She knows that term really well now.” Last November Morgan ran the Indianapolis Monumental Half Marathon, and during some downtime she struck up a conversation with Geist Half Marathon representatives who had set up an informational booth at the race. Instantly intrigued, she decided to inquire about competing with Bella. “We always ask race directors before I run a race with Bella, for permission,” Morgan explains. “The Geist director was very excited to have Bella run. I like the course description, and it seems like a race where everyone’s really supportive. I’m always excited to do races in other cities, and we’re excited to come.” The Geist Half kicks off May 19 at 7 a.m., and Morgan looks forward to a new course and a fresh challenge - but probably not half as much as Bella does. For the last two two years, Belzer Middle School has hosted a unique Elite Gaming Live Club (EGL) that encourages kids to stay after school and play competitive video games, work on coding and learn more about computer science and web design.
Since the club started in the 2015-2016 school year, it has consistently had approximately 80 students who participate each semester.
Andrew Harsha, principal of Belzer Middle School, says EGL gives opportunities to students who may not play an instrument in Belzer’s performing arts program, or who are not athletes, to get more involved in school activities.
“Some participate both in the fall and the spring,” Harsha says. “We currently have more than 70 students this spring.” Students also compete for t-shirts, medals and cash prizes.

Harsha also loves the fact that it’s not just about playing video games but also involves learning more about coding and computer science. “As an Indiana Department of Education Certified STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) school, that is important to me as well,” Harsha says. “The EGL staff has been amazing. They do all the work. We just organize the students and show up. If there are other schools in the area that have not yet connected with EGL, they should.” Kerwin Rent, founder and CEO of EliteGamingLIVE , says Harsha has been a great supporter of the program and how it helps students. “We have great scholarship opportunities,” Rent says. “Our students range from
sixth grade to 12th grade. At EGL Championships, we award up to five scholarships for students that cover summer STEM/STEAM (Science, Technology,Engineering, the Arts, and Math) if they are not in 12th grade.” At the last two EGL Championships, EGL partnered with Cathedral High School and awarded scholarships to their summer camp for Web Design. Besides those awards, they are open for recipients to choose their STEM camp. “For instance, if a student wants to attend a specific camp, we fund that enrollment fee up to $250,” Rent says. “In the future, we want to have a broader range of educational partners to offer unique STEM summer experiences to students.” If the recipient is in the 12th grade, Elite Gaming Live awards $250 to the bookstore account of the collegebound student. “Our students at Belzer absolutely love EGL,” says Adelaide Collins, a Belzer teacher and EGL club sponsor. “We have students involved from all ability levels, ranging in students in life skills to special education.” Collins loves that the club provides an opportunity for all students to share their love for video games and coding. “We have new members show up to every meeting who are recruited by their friends,” Collins says. “We also have point rankings all over the school to show who is leading in points in the building. This might seem small, but the reaction of pride and joy that we see with our students is worth the hassle of running this large organization in our building. “We have students who excel in video gaming and coding who might not excel in other areas of school success. As the retail industry becomes increasingly specialized and online-driven, a new service from Big Red Liquors has the statewide company hoping to reach more wine drinkers than ever before.
“Basically it’s those two components that we’re bringing together – the physical part where we’ll be at events, and then the app,” says Matt Colglazier, vice president of merchandising and marketing for Big Red Liquors. “We can go to an event like a winery might do, and have people sample wine. We can load everything into a van, and show up anywhere and pour under our license legally.”
At December’s Bourbon Expo at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, Big Red unveiled The Wine Hole, a mobile wine concept that allows the company to bring a variety of its wine products directly to consumers at special events, festivals and private functions. An accompanying mobile application will allow users to purchase

festivals and special events, and realizing that many wine companies were using such events primarily as branding exercises rather than sales opportunities. “Instead of filling out order forms or having to remember a wine to go and buy at one of our stores later, we have the app that all the products that people are tasting at an event are loaded onto,” he says. “So they just open the app and buy the product right then and there.” Customers that download the mobile application will get notifications of special sales and be able to ask questions on the app about products, in addition to being able to make purchases and schedule pickups at a
Big Red Liquors store of their choice. “We’re trying to make it easier to where you get on your phone, put the products in your basket, set where you want to pick it up and be done with it,” says Jim Gooley, wine director for Big Red. “You get a notification when the wine is ready at the store for you to pick up.” Gooley says since state and federal laws limit the ability of retailers to ship wine directly to individual consumers, he hopes The Wine Hole will reach a portion of the market that might be interested in purchasing wine more regularly but would
prefer the added convenience of browsing and purchasing via smartphone and choosing a pickup spot. “When you download the app on your phone, you may have visited The Wine Hole at a special event or festival, but if we do an event three weeks later at a wedding planning show or something like that, you’re going to get a notification that wines are on sale at The Wine Hole,” Gooley says. “So you won’t have to be there but you can look at the sales that are going on.” With the rise in mobile application technology and popularity in the last five

What began as a fairly informal series of basketball training sessions, given by Fishers-based Harvey Harrington for his daughter and a few of her friends, is steadily evolving into one of Indy’s premier sports programs for youngsters.
In 2016, Harrington, a former IUPUI basketball player and the brother of former Indiana Pacer Al Harrington, began taking his daughter Arianna to various indoor and outdoor basketball courts around Fishers to work on her game fundamentals. “I structure my training sessions according to the group and switch things up a lot so kids don’t get bored,” Harrington says. “For example, if I have a group that I know struggles with shooting the ball off the dribble, then we’ll cater toward that. With my brother having played in the NBA, I’ve watched NBA players like Reggie Miller, Chauncey Billups and LeBron James work out, and I know what it takes. I can train professionals all the way down to kindergarten level.”

Harrington is currently mulling the idea of building out a Dream Chasers league with a season-long series of games, but is currently plenty busy focused solely on fundamentals and physical workouts with his Dream Chasers athletes. A father of three with his wife Kia, he also works full-time running his own Office Pride franchise, a nationwide commercial cleaning and janitorial company he opened locally in March of 2014.

“I’ll probably know whether we’ll be able to do full-fledged teams and games by next summer,” he says. “We’ll see how enrollment goes, and I plan to hire some additional high-quality trainers as we grow.” Dream Chasers training sessions typically break down by age group from kindergarten all the way up to high schoolers and currently include boys and girls from Fishers as well as several players from around the city, including Pike and North Central high schools. “The only prerequisite is that you have a desire to get better,” Harrington adds. “I want to help kids, through the game of basketball, become better players and great people. In the future, I want people to be able to say that Harvey Harrington has been doing this for 25 years, and his kids continue to come through and get better. After former Mamma Bear’s owner, Christy Watson sold the coffee spot at the end of 2017, it wasn’t long before she made a “beeline” to a brand new business venture — Bee Boutique at 11386 Olio Road. “I had some health issues,” Watson says. “So after three and a half years of 5:30 a.m. early morning hours of the coffee business, I decided I needed a break.” But, not for long. Once on the mend, Watson started thinking about what she wanted to do next. “I thought about a casual, fun shop,” she says. “I was thinking Be You, Be Young, Be Who You Are. Then I thought, ‘that’s it! The Bee Boutique.’”
Watson lives in the Geist area and feels as though she already knows the neighbors from her days behind the counter at Mamma Bear’s. “I am excited to have the shop up and running,” Watson says. “Bee Boutique offers women’s clothing, as well as something for teens and young children, some jewelry and novelty items as well.” Watson came up with the Bee Boutique logo while scribbling on a piece of paper at home one night. Then she started finding the clothes she wanted and other items. The space, formerly a Quiznos, needed some new paint and some fixes, but soon enough it was ready for some boutique kind of final touches. atGeist.com / MAY 2018 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 49
“Bee Happy” signs adorn the walls of the shop and the clothing is divided into different sections according to styles and brands all marked by chalkboard signs, that Watson made on her own. There’s the “bee chic” area which is more upscale women’s clothing from the Gretchen Scott line and the “Bee Young” area with hippie pants and tapestries. The “Bee Nauti” area is fun, nautical clothing and other items. For the little ones, there’s “rock -n -roll” onesies such as the “all you need is love” Beatles outfit. There’s also a handmade wall rack for jewelry and a table of fun items, such as Modgy Portable Dog bowls (portable dog bowls that are great to travel with), wine
glass shades and luminary lanterns. Watson says she credits her daughters for finding the Mala beads and the Dona Bela Shreds neckwear and headbands. She also plans to offer the Spiritual Gangster yoga-inspired clothing and may even look at the possibility of selling some men’s clothing in the near future, as well. Bee Boutique officially opened its doors March 31, receiving a warm welcome from the community. Bee Boutique joins a handful of other boutiques in the Geist area and also opens on the heels of the sudden closing of Delaney’s, which was a popular boutique destination in the Geist area as well as, Zionsville, Fishers, Carmel and Keystone Fashion Mall. These days, there’s a phone app for almost everything you do, helping you get information in real time. In a pilot program for fleet management company, Mobil Trackr, Mount Vernon Community School Corporation just launched the app Don’t Miss the Bus. Now, thanks to the magic of digital technology, parents can open the app and see their child’s bus approaching in real time so they know exactly when the bus will arrive and when it’s dropping off.

Although Dr. Robbins and Mobil Trackr did their best to ensure the app was functional and successful for Android systems and iPhone systems, users experienced issues. “We experienced some bugs with the program, like with anything,” says Maria Bond, Director of Community Relations for Mt. Vernon CSC. “But a company representative gave us his personal cell number for parents to call with tech support questions. We went back and forth for quite a while, but one by one, they worked through the bugs and fixed them. They were wonderful to work with.” The app’s capabilities go far beyond just alerting families to their approaching buses. The app is designed to program push alerts.
“Some days, our buses are delayed. The push alerts notify parents of that change,” Bond says. The school also uses the push alerts to notify parents if their bus is out of service so they know what bus number to look for in its place. While the convenience factor of the app is an important benefit, the app also gives parents peace of mind. For working parents, knowing their child’s whereabouts is always at the forefront of their minds. “Parents can open the app and see when the bus has safely dropped their child back at home,” Bond says. “Even kids use the app. They’re allowed to use cell phones on the bus, so if they have a younger sibling on a different bus, they can see how soon they can expect their brother or sister. It’s an important safety net.” Parents can program their app settings to reflect specific geographical boundaries so that when their bus enters that boundary,
they’ll receive a push alert. Transportation safety is number one priority for Derek Shelton, Maintenance and Transportation Director of Operations. “These kids mean a lot to us. We take their best interests to heart to make the best decisions possible,” he says. “We try to stay in the flow of technology for communication as much as we possibly can. Dr. Robbins is a visionary who always looks for new opportunities for our school. We’re always learning about new things from other schools in other states at conventions.” To ensure all families have access to the
convenient bus tracker app, the school system has sent out email reminders, included information in newsletters, and they’ve posted it on the website. So far, around 550 families have registered for the app, and the school wants more. Parents can find the app in the App Store or Google Play. “It’s easy to get to, easy to download and it’s free.
