IN THE WEEDS: FORMATION OF GEIST CONSERVANCY DISTRICT GIVES AGING RESERVOIR HOPE
When it comes to the long-term health of Geist Reservoir, the days of passing the hat by the Geist Lake Coalition each year to treat the “invasive weed species du jour” are over. Heavy sediment load coming down from the Upper Fall Creek Watershed and various tributaries are filling the reservoir bottom, making it shallower with every passing day. While treating the weeds gives us some visual and nautical navigation relief, it’s only scratching the surface of the long-term needs of our area’s most valuable resource.

relocate out of state, the couple decided.
Table and Tea has become one of the Indianapolis area’s favorite event venues, and its beauty and charm seem a natural fit for its home at historic Fort Harrison.
But first, Shauna gave Fort Harrison one more look. This time she found the perfect spot in the Harrison Quarters building on Post Road. The 117-year-old townhome served as officers’ quarters when Fort Harrison was an active Army base.
But the business almost didn’t open at Fort Harrison — or anywhere else in Indiana, for “It was meant to be,” she now says about the that matter. roundabout process that landed Table and Tea just minutes from the Williams’ home. Owner Shauna Williams and her husband, Ryan, wanted to merge their work. She was Since opening in May 2017, Table and Tea an event planner, and he built furniture. has become a go-to spot for everything Both Lawrence natives, the couple envisioned setting up shop at Fort Harrison. But when they initially looked for sites in that area, they struck out.

So they extended their search to other parts of Indianapolis. After months of looking, The business’s eclectic mix of event hosting, again they had no luck. Maybe it was time to boutique sales, craft classes and green 8 / GEIST MAGAZINE / MAY 2019 / atGeist.com
space sets it apart, Shauna says. In fact, her customers — many of whom are from Fishers, Geist and Noblesville — frequently tell her there’s nothing else like it in the area. Table and Tea invites visitors to “Sip, Shop and Celebrate,” a nod to the laid-back, farmhouse feeling that Shauna says she’s trying to cultivate. “We’re a small event venue, and when you come there’s always coffee, tea, water or lemonade,” she says. “There’s always a tea party type of feel to it.” Event rental is Table and Tea’s most popular service, with party packages and annual memberships available. The venue also sells boutique items created by Shauna and other vendors. Table and Tea offers baby and preschool playtime activities and arts and crafts workshops, too. Young visitors gravitate
to Table and Tea’s playroom, which is stocked with dress-up clothes. Professionals can also rent space at Table and Tea for work and meetings. It all happens in the 1,700 square feet of space where visitors can see everything from exposed brick from the old officers’ quarters to the decorated mantle that remains where the former home’s fireplace once stood. The building overlooks Fort Harrison State Park Inn and its gazebo. “People love sitting on the front porch and the sense of community that’s here,” Shauna says. “Walk a few feet in every direction, and there’s beautiful scenery.” Table and Tea is located at 5805 N. Post Road, Indianapolis. To learn more about special summer hours and products or to book an event, call 317-597-0250 or visit them online at tableandtea.net for more information.

Mother’s Day Gift Ideas For Every Mom
Mother’s Day is coming up May 12th. Do you have plans yet? Have you gotten a gift for your mom? Moms are way too important not to plan for. So, aside from peace and quiet, here are a few ideas on ways to make her smile and remember this Mother’s Day.
Writer / Abigail Hake
For the New Moms
The best gifts for new moms are things that save time and small comforts for sleepdeprived parents like super-soft mix and match pajamas you can find at Soma or a subscription to Shipt or Instacart! They’ll 100 percent appreciate the thoughtfulness of not having to run to the grocery store when they need things for dinner, but the baby is napping.
For the Floral Loving Mom
Does your momma like flowers? Most do, but there are a couple of different options here. For those who like to get their hands dirty in the garden, pop over to your local nursery or gardening and landscaping store and grab a few of their favorite florals. You can purchase pre-potted arrangements or pick out a few flats for your mom to make their own combination. There are also options for those who are less inclined to garden but prefer fresh cut. If that’s the case, check out thebouqs.com who offers really unique florals that she’s sure to want For the Mom Who Needs Quiet to show off. The one thing moms can never get enough of is alone time, and there are many ways to give her that. She might have a preferred massage location or yoga spot that you can grab her a gift card at. Or even better, book her an appointment and prepay! She’s sure to love this alone time especially when everything is taken care of.
to try out a new studio in your area. If they are someone who likes to be outdoors, think about gifting her a season pass to your state park. With a pass, they can explore some really great land throughout the state.
For the Artistic or Crafty Mom
If your mom is one who loves to get crafty and make things, why not sign her up for a local workshop? Find one for decorating florals, creating candles, or hand lettering. For the Active Mom The best gifts for active mom are obviously Pouring candles is also very fun and maybe more her style. If so, sign her up for a candle activities! If your mom is a gal who likes to work out, then maybe buy her a few sessions pouring workshop in your area. atGeist.com / MAY 2019 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 11
For the Foodie Mom
Treat your mom to a nice Mother’s Day brunch and no dishes afterward. No one wants to do the dishes on Mother’s Day. No. One. So make reservations at her favorite, local restaurant. Enjoy each other’s company while enjoying some great eats too I don’t think many would say no to brunch. And if you can’t make brunch happen, then grab her a gift card to one of her favorite spots to eat around town.
For Any Mom
Maybe she wears jewelry but likes finer pieces. If that’s your mom, find a local jewelry craft store where the ladies there will be able to create something custom or help find you something perfect that’s readily available from their beautiful collection. If you think something a little simpler might work, pick up a monogram necklace. There’s also amazing silhouette necklaces on Etsy if you have time to order. Check out LEILAjewelryshop or GracefullyMadeStudio for unique and heartfelt necklaces. And if you aren’t able to figure anything out and all else fails, chocolate. Chocolates are quick and much loved. Pick out her favorites. Truffles, along with a handwritten card, and love are sure to please. As long as you make sure you give mom a day to relax and let her know how much you appreciate her and love her, you will win her heart over. Moms don’t hear these affirmations often enough, and usually, they are the icing on the cake to make for a perfect Mother’s Day — along with chocolate. 12 / GEIST MAGAZINE / MAY 2019 / atGeist.com

Wine Women & Shoes Returns May 10 Don Hutchinson and Mark Hosfeld, co-winners of last year’s Shoe Guy of the Year Award.
Gleaners Food Bank is one of the most efficient, productive and caring organizations in Indiana. We are truly blessed that they serve the community like they do. When I donate to Gleaners, whether it is as a volunteer or financially, I know the support directly impacts those who need it most – hungry children and families right here in Central Indiana. My company has a long history in supporting Gleaners. We constructed Gleaner’s current distribution building for Monarch Beverage years ago, and seeing the facility now operated by a devoted team of staff and volunteers moving millions of pounds of food each year so it gets to the people most in need at the right time, is extremely rewarding. Gleaners Food Bank is a great investment, one well worth your time, talent and treasure, and I feel very fortunate to support them through the Shoe Guy program for Wine, Women and Shoes!

Since October of 2017, The Exercise Coach Fishers has been helping locals of all ages work out smarter and more efficiently, and Director of Operations Trevor Junga says clients both locally and throughout Central Indiana have seen results in their strength, stability, agility and cardiovascular capacity — leading to improved athletic performance and overall quality of life.

Junga says The Exercise Coach’s proprietary machines have the ability to measure an individual’s strength and metabolic makeup and adapt in real time during the workout regardless of age or fitness level. “For example, with our strength exercises 18 / GEIST MAGAZINE / MAY 2019 / atGeist.com
the range of motion is very controlled and the cadence of the repetitions is very controlled as well, so it keeps the muscle engaged the entire time and reduces the chance of injury too,” Junga explains. “The 20-minute workouts include both strength and conditioning, so we always do full-body workouts and you always have a professional coach guiding you through.” The facility offers a free initial consultation, which consists of a sit-down with a coach to discuss specific goals, concerns, physical limitations and any previous injuries. The coach will then explain how the system works, and how it can be fully customized based on the client’s needs. “Also, there is some hands-on where we do some assessment of strength and you can

sample some of the exercises,” Junga says. “So in that initial consultation you get the full package of talking through your goals and trying some of it out.” After opening the Carmel location five years ago, The Exercise Coach team noticed the explosive development in Fishers in recent years and decided to be part of that growth. “We knew we wanted to be in Hamilton County,” Junga recalls. “We did a little bit of market research, and we were just driving around one day and found ourselves at 116th and Olio. It was amazing to us how much it had grown over the years out there. We saw that a developer was doing a new building there, and we thought that it seemed like a great area for us.” The Exercise Coach currently has more than 40 locations nationwide, and the Fishers location currently serves a wide age range from teens looking to develop their strength for high school sports to seniors interested in preventing age-related loss of muscle mass. “One of our clients in her 70s took a fall recently and explained to us how her recovery was so much faster than it had been in the past, from the strength she had built with us,” Junga says. “We get excited when we hear real-life stories like that when people feel stronger and better.” Junga says traditional exercise like lengthy bike or treadmill sessions work for some people, but over time can lead to burnout and even long-term, wear-and-tear injuries. “Those approaches have been proven to not be as effective for some people and in a lot of cases produce back and knee problems from things like running miles and miles on pavement,” he says. “We implement a technology that allows us to hone in on an individual’s muscular makeup and capabilities and target each exercise precisely. So it’s a much more efficient approach.” The Exercise Coach is located at 11488 Lakeridge Drive in Fishers. Holly Schmidt has been in the hair industry for more than 25 years as both a stylist and an owner of hair salons. After more than 10 years of operating a booth rental salon, HG Studio in Noblesville, Schmidt decided to expand and open a new salon. Wicked Scissors was born in August of 2018, in downtown Fortville. The salon is a result of Schmidt’s passion and dedication to giving clients the best possible experience combined with her sincere desire to encourage and educate stylists to be independent and become their own boss.
Wicked Scissors is a full-service salon offering both men and women the most current and best practices in the industry. It carries its own brand of bio-mineral technology hair products and has a staff member who is one of the only three Deva Curl Certified stylists in Indiana. Master, seasoned stylists with extensive specialties are booth renters in the trendy, industrial looking but comfortably built out space. What sets Wicked Scissors apart from other salons is the new twist it takes on the hair salon business. Its approach offers patrons a choice of stylist levels while, at the same time, providing the stylists 22 / GEIST MAGAZINE / MAY 2019 / atGeist.com
continuing education and knowledge about the hair salon business. New stylists fresh out of beauty school are paid on an hourly basis while they are accruing valuable experience. They move to the second level of commissioned pay when they are ready. The final third step is booth rental and essentially becoming self-employed. “The journey to become your own boss in this industry can be filled with fear, lack of knowledge and confusion about understanding the finances of the business,” Schmidt says. “I want to run a successful, profitable business, but I know that it can still be achieved through offering stylists
those three empowering opportunities. I want to give all levels of stylists the tools to succeed.” By allowing stylists to keep their own books as well as guest lists and vital information, Schmidt allows them to develop confidence while learning how to be their own boss. She also places people with the appropriate level stylist, depending on the client’s wants and needs. “We offer three price ranges to our customer,” she says. “We offer new stylist, associate stylist and master stylist pricing and experience. Complete satisfaction is our guarantee regardless of the level of experience the client chooses.” Wicked Scissors has enjoyed rapid growth and success in the 10 months they have been open in Fortville. Staff has doubled since they have been open, ranging from new talent out of beauty school to multiple booth renters. The stylists enjoy the opportunities Schmidt has given them to flourish. “Wicked Scissors is like a family,” says Becca Miller, master designer. “We all support and push each other to do our best whether you’re fresh out of school or have 10-plus years of experience. It’s like having your own personal cheer squad.” Holly has created the most amazing work environment, and I’m excited to work every day. I feel like I can actually excel in my career now and I have my own goals to work towards, not some mold I’m being forced into.” Schmidt is humbled by the support of the community and the growth of business in such a short period of time. “Our ultimate goal is to have a salon full with confident, empowered, and experienced master stylists that can enjoy working for themselves and providing for their families,” she says. “I look forward to meeting and investing in the right stylists that want a great opportunity here at Wicked Scissors.” Wicked Scissors Hair Salon is located at 218 South Main Street in Fortville. SUNRISE CAFE NEARS 17 YEARS OF PROVIDING TOP-NOTCH BREAKFAST & A FAMILY ATMOSPHERE Writer / Josh Brown . Photographer / Brian Brosmer
ou’ve heard the saying, “The early bird gets the worm.” Scott Horsfield has been that early bird for the better part of 34 years, and he wouldn’t have it any other way. Most mornings Horsfield, the owner of Sunrise Cafe in Fishers, climbs out of bed around 3 am, showers, gets dressed and arrives at the restaurant between 3:30 and 4 in the morning. That is when his day truly starts. Among his long list of to-dos before the restaurant even opens at 6 a.m. are making Sunrise’s breads, biscuits, gravy, jams and jellies, dressings, slicing up fresh fruit and much more. “Everyone is tired in the mornings,” Horsfield says. “No matter how early it is. The difference is when I physically unlock the front door and walk into this place my adrenaline goes up ten-fold. There are about 500 things I need to do when I get here. A lot of the work goes in way before the customers get here. That challenge drives the passion. People expect top-notch service. So, I want to go out of my way, with a smile on my face, to make it worth their while because I want them to come back.”
Before he and his brother Jim opened the first Sunrise Cafe off Keystone in 1985, Horsfield had never cooked an egg a day of his life. Now, he estimates that he’s cooked nearly six million eggs throughout the last 34 years — most of them, he says, two at a time and around 270 dozen eggs a week. “Now we have some help, especially doing omelets nowadays,” he says. “But I cook most of those. In one sense, it is just eggs, right? But on the other hand, nobody likes them unless they are done right. Everyone likes their eggs a certain way. I take pride in that.”
like family because they all know each other from being in here so often. They are like family to us, too. We’ve watched kids grow up over the years and now their kids are in here working.” When you walk into Sunrise Cafe, there is a good chance, at some point, you will be greeted by those kids — a teenager or young adult. That is by design. While there are several adult cooks, waiters and waitresses and managers that have been with Horsfield for a long time, a good chunk of the staff is young adults in high school or college.
In 2002, Horsfield left the home nest off Keystone and opened the Fishers Sunrise Cafe location. Several factors, he says, went into that decision. “Fishers was the up and coming destination,” he says. “Even then, you had many new families moving in. We just wanted to grab onto that and build it from there. We knew we could do it, but you never know for sure how it is going to go when you open a new spot.” Today, Sunrise Cafe continues to be one of the most popular breakfast spots in Fishers. It hasn’t come without hard work from the Horsfields and the Sunrise staff. More than anything, the Horsfields credit the community response over the years and the faithful customers that come in week after week, citing a family atmosphere at the restaurant. “The community response has been great,” says Scott’s wife, Jenny. “Our customers are atGeist.com / MAY 2019 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 27
On the practical side of a small, familyowned business, hiring high school or college-aged students meant saving money. After all, not everyone can be full-time. But the Horsfields, having kids of their own, always wanted to mentor youth and provide an opportunity for them to learn a strong work ethic and grow into what was most likely their first real job at the restaurant. “The biggest turnover on our staff is the high schoolers, but I always tell them that they have a job for life if they want it,” Scott says.
“The better ones bring over other better ones. The parents might want it to be the first job for their kid too. The younger the better. If they start when they are freshmen or sophomores, then they’ve worked their way up more by the time they are seniors. But they get in here and they see what it takes. It is a huge experience for them.”
“It is what you would cook at home in your own kitchen. You don’t have to search through our menu to find what you want. There are no glorified items, and everything is fresh.”
With so many new restaurants popping up in Fishers, Sunrise Cafe remains a local favorite not only because of the family, community feel but because of the food as well. For those who have been, fast, quality service and a delicious meal are expected.
“Jenny probably knows a large percentage of everyone’s name that comes in, and I could probably tell you what they are going to order before they do,” he says. “Certain people order the same thing every time they come, others come every day and switch it up. Everyone has their favorites.”
“The secret is just hard work,” he says. “Some people call us old, I call us old school. We are fortunate to have a hard working staff as well. You lead by example, that is what we try to do. When we reflect on the last 17 years here, it is pretty cool. But that doesn’t make tomorrow any easier. So you have to be fired up and ready to go each day.”
After 17 years in the Fishers location, Horsfield is still very much passionate about the restaurant. The drive to wake up those early mornings and get behind the grill has not diminished for the owner.
“We just want to thank the community and their families, too,” Jenny adds. “They are so important to us and have been great supporters of us over the years. We can’t thank them enough.”
“I’ve always enjoyed the cooking part,” he says. “I would have a tough time walking around out here in a tie or something. When you are at your busiest, that is when you are tested. Part of it is how I

The menu includes traditional breakfast combinations and specialties like Eggs Benedict, the Breakfast Quesadilla and the Quiche of the Day as well as favorites like the Biscuits and Gravy, French Melt and French Toast. Over the years, Sunrise has also added breakfast bowls and “Create your Own Omelets” options. A lunch menu is also offered. “There is no fluff to our menu,” Jenny adds.
Part of the fun, Scott says, is getting to know the regulars and their favorites.

was brought up, too. I want to take care of people and have their day be better for it. It is my way of serving the community.” As for the success they’ve experienced, he says there really isn’t a big secret to that.

S.P.O.R.T.S. Celebrates Volunteerism During 2019 Season Writer / Jon Shoulders Photography Provided
For many youngsters throughout the Hamilton Southeastern School District, spring and summer means sports. Scott Spillman, executive director at S.P.O.R.T.S. (Southeastern Program of Recreational Team Sports) on Promise Road near 126th Street and I-69, says his organization, which offers 12 different leagues and 11 sports, is proud of the volunteers who make each season special for as many local youths as possible. “There’s so much value in adults giving back to the youth locally,” Spillman says. “All of the 12 member leagues under the S.P.O.R.T.S. umbrella are volunteer-led, and each one is its own 501(c)(3). So there are a lot of great volunteers doing a lot of heavy lifting to make sure those sports are
the best they can be out on the field.” Founded back in 1987 as a private, nonprofit, community-based youth athletics organization, S.P.O.R.T.S. offers structured leagues in the fall, winter and spring for basketball, football, lacrosse, cheer, soccer and more. All league participants, coaches and board members must reside in the Hamilton Southeastern school district, and ages range from four to 18. Each coach is given training in preparation for their season, and Spillman says S.P.O.R.T.S. is currently welcoming volunteers for board member positions as well as head and assistant coaching spots. “For a lot of our leagues, and especially our niche sports like lacrosse and rugby, coaches go through training modules through the national governing body that 30 / GEIST MAGAZINE / MAY 2019 / atGeist.com
they report to,” Spillman explains. “With some of our more established leagues like soccer, baseball and softball, we host a coaching clinic before the season going over basic drills, team management, and how to deal with difficult parents.” S.P.O.R.T.S. typically sees more than 10,000 registrations per year, and last year the organization gave out 316 youth sports scholarships to local, in-need kids totaling $33,926. “We’re never going to turn volunteers away,” adds Spillman, who assumed the S.P.O.R.T.S. executive director role in December of 2017. “Some of our teams only have a head coach, and we’d love for all of our leagues to have head coaches as well as assistant coaches. We are also looking for people to help out at the board level — all of the board of directors are volunteers.”
Current S.P.O.R.T.S. Board Vice President Alyssa Anderson began her involvement with S.P.O.R.T.S. back in 2013 when her son enrolled in soccer, and previously served as a league commissioner and eventually league president. “I enjoyed learning about the sport and working to streamline and improve league communication and operations,” Anderson says. “Six months into my presidency it clicked that leading the league was all about the family experience rather than the tasks and logistics. That mindset shift really drove our mission as a league, and we implemented programs and curriculum to support kids, coaches and families during their soccer experience.” Spillman stresses the social and networking benefits that can come from volunteering with his organization, as well as the gratification that comes with helping out on the local level.
“I think people can be amazed at how much fun it can be and how many new people they can meet,” he says. “In this day and age where we’re all so busy and on our phones and computers all the time, you can kind of lose sight of the fact that you can have some great personal interactions out on the ball field or a basketball court.” Interested in volunteering? Visit hsesports. org for more information on volunteer
opportunities and registration details. S.P.O.R.T.S. is located at 12690 Promise Road in Fishers. Fall sports registration, which includes baseball, softball, cheer, cross country, football, soccer and girls volleyball and field hockey, will run through the entire month of May, with a late fee starting June 1. Those interested can register online or bring a completed registration form to the S.P.O.R.T.S. office.

When Lauren Dusing was growing up in Fishers, she was always busy making jewelry, constructing origami or painting watercolors. Although she loved creating
art, it never occurred to her that someday her occupation would be selling her works to the public. After graduating from Indiana University and working as an interior designer for several years, she began to realize that her dream of being a professional artist might become a reality. atGeist.com / MAY 2019 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 33

Dusing began selling to commissioned clients in 2015. By 2017, she was populating her own Instagram feed with images of her watercolors landscapes, acrylic florals and mixed media abstract paintings and her sales began to increase. In July of 2018, she was paired with interior design shop Shine Design Home during the Fishers Art Crawl. Her display caught the eye of Jill Lehman, owner of High Frequency Arts, who arranged for Dusing’s art to be exhibited at the studio early this year. Recently, she left her full-time job at an interior design firm and began working as an assistant to a local lifestyle blogger. She now has the flexibility to devote more time to producing her art.
These days, people from all over the world can view and purchase museum quality prints of Dusing’s work at ArtfullyWalls.com. She applied to be one of their featured artists and was accepted in September 2018. It is an online retail store which has been highlighted in multiple publications both in the United States and abroad and offers patrons affordable artwork for hanging on walls. A large
“I was so inspired by other artists I saw on Instagram making a successful living as an artist, that I finally thought it could be possible.” portion of her paintings shown on the site are abstracts. “I was always a lover of abstract art, and I finally decided to explore it about 18 months ago,” she says. “It is so much harder than people think. I think I love abstracts so much because you are able to focus and enjoy more of the process instead of thinking about the end result. I’ve had to learn to put the fear aside and get into the flow. That is when I enjoy the process most and I think my enjoyment and happiness shows through in my finished paintings.” In the future, Dusing hopes to expand into other avenues that go beyond art that hangs on walls. She is exploring the possibility of developing textiles for fashion. However, she is also interested in sharing the joy of creating art with others. “I’d like to somehow educate or teach others to bring creativity and art into their life because the benefits are so immense,” she says. “I’d especially love to someday give back by working with children to keep that creative spark alive in them so they never lose it.”

When you walk into McCordsville Barbershop, you become more than a customer. You become a friend — possibly for life.
Wiley has been working his shears for 51 years, and the spark of inspiration that eventually prompted him to cut hair for a living dates back even further to his days as a young boy growing up on a farm in Falmouth, Indiana.
Owner Gary Wiley has cultivated a rather unique business, with respect not only to the physical surroundings of his establishment (he cuts hair inside an actual converted train caboose), but also to the long-term relationships he develops with
cool in the summer and warm in the winter, and when I asked what that might be she got ‘barber’ out of her mouth before grandpa shut her up. It stuck with me, and there was a strong power of suggestion there.”
Wiley started cutting hair back in the mid1960s and settled into his current location in McCordsville almost 40 years ago. After a few decades improving his craft and growing a list of loyal customers, Wiley “When I was about seven my grandmother asked me what I wanted to be, and I said a decided to make a unique change to his farmer like dad and grandpa,” Wiley recalls. professional surroundings. “One Sunday morning my grandson was playing with toy tracks and a caboose and set them in my lap and that lit the fuse even more,” Wiley says. “I heard about one that was available down in Evansville, so I paid for it and got it moved up here.”
It’s a kid-friendly destination as well, complete with an adjustable Thomas the Train barber chair, an oversized checkers station and a train room in which an electric toy train can be put in motion remotely at any time by Wiley for visiting youngsters.
Wiley has since created an old-fashioned visual aesthetic that is both welcoming and slightly whimsical throughout his place of business. Mannequins are posed inside

I try to make it fun.” Perhaps no better testament to the loyalty of Wiley’s customers is the fact that much of the artwork and mannequins that fill the shop were provided by his clients and their family members. “I haven’t done any of this myself,” Wiley says, adding that his son Andrew now cuts hair at the shop as well. “I’ve gotten a lot of help, and my customers are the best. I have one guy who I’ve cut for 51 years. One of my customers’ wives came in here and did the murals, and other customers made the mannequins.”
SPRING IS FINALLY HERE! NOW IS THE TIME TO GET THE BOAT READY FOR THE SEASON
Wiley says word of mouth remains his best means of advertising, and he still gets clients from as far as Chicago and Fort Wayne interested in coming to the caboose for a trim. He doesn’t take such interest in his business lightly. He even goes so far as to make house calls if a customer falls ill. “There are several generations within families that have come, and I’ve cut the grandfather, the son, the grandsons and then their sons,” Wiley says. “That’s what keeps me going, connecting and being friends with all of these people. I enjoy people and learning about their lives. You start to become part of the family.” McCordsville Barbershop is located at 7745 North 600 West. ROGUE ART IN THE ALLEY NEW GALLERY OPENS IN FORTVILLE SHOWCASING ARTISTS AROUND CENTRAL INDIANA
“The people are genuine, the atmosphere so historic and authentic with so many original buildings. It reminds us so much of our hometowns,” Cissna says. Cissna connected with an artist friend who helped her get started. They went to art shows to scout artists and hand-picked some of them. “I was really drawn to their art, and we shared a great connection,” she says. But not all artists were quick to sign on before Cissna had secured the gallery. “Then, after four or five artists signed on, the gallery was in demand, and I had to put artists on a waiting list,” she says.

but a guidance counselor steered her to sociology.
There’s another excuse for customers to come and check out Fortville’s town square. Rogue Art in the Alley recently opened right before Thanksgiving.
“My degree in sociology taught me a lot about the complexities of people, so I studied that while I didn’t have to give up my studies in art and art history,” she says. “Understanding the people behind the art gave me the best of both worlds.”
The art gallery is filled with art from 11 artists offering a variety of styles and types of collectible items. You can find oil paintings, impressionistic acrylic paintings, ceramics, jewelry and much more at affordable prices. Opening the 600 square feet space is part of a lifelong dream come true for co-owner Katie Cissna. Cissna always loved art and art history, since most artist’s works reflect the history of the era. Most kids grow up playing dress up or house, Cissna loved to draw and play art gallery, often inviting friends and family to come into her room and view her creations. Her original plan was to graduate from college with a major in art and art history,
After college, Cissna’s love for traveling led her to places near and far, back home to get married, to a job as a dental assistant, then time at home to raise her children. She and her husband, Seth, raised their family in Fishers, where they’ve been residents for five years. Neither Cissna nor Seth grew up in a big city. Cissna grew up in Bloomington, and Seth in Santa Claus, Indiana. After living in Fishers a while, Cissna never gave up her dream and decided it was time to make it happen. The couple, small-town kids at heart, became smitten with Fortville and jumped at the chance to make a home for the gallery there. 42 / GEIST MAGAZINE / MAY 2019 / atGeist.com
The gallery officially opened with a splash November 17, 2018, and followed with a strong Small Business Saturday. Cissna kicked off the first of the gallery’s monthly First Friday events on December 7. She plans to make First Fridays a tradition, an event promoting the works of a featured artist each month. Most artists will do a live painting and discuss the techniques used. Cissna plans to rotate the art by featuring

Response to the gallery has been positive, and Cissna hopes to expand in the future. But if the gallery does expand in the future, Cissna is firm that it will remain in Fortville. Before Rogue Art opened, the town was already artist friendly.

IN THE WEEDS
FORMATION OF GEIST CONSERVANCY DISTRICT GIVES AGING RESERVOIR HOPE Writer / Tom Britt Photographer / Brian Brosmer
At the age of 75, Geist Reservoir’s health has been in a slow decline, evidenced by the blue-green algae bloom (2007), arrival of zebra mussels (2010), and most recently with the introduction of Eurasian milfoil (2013). Lucky for us, the Geist Lake Coalition was already in existence when these problems surfaced and was able to take the lead on raising the money, developing a plan and executing it effectively.
GOING TOXIC
Cambridge resident Matt Troyer (left) and Geist Lake Coalition President Brian Hall (right) led the initiative to form the Geist Conservancy District.
Grand Lake residents in St. Mary’s, Ohio weren’t so lucky. Just across the Ohio state line, about two hours away from Geist Reservoir, Grand Lake residents had the same blue-green algae scare back in 2007 and did nothing to address the problem. They waited for someone else to come along and fix their lake. Two years later, the algae bloom went toxic rendering the lake unsafe

Home values in the area are recovering but nowhere near where they once were.
MAKING THE CASE
A Geist Conservancy District is another layer of government, more property taxes for those living in it and new fees for those using the reservoir. It is not a perfect solution, but it is far better than the alternative: A closed reservoir. Organizers of the Geist Conservancy District plotted out all the neighborhoods that had water frontage and drew boundaries around nearly 4,000 homes to be included in the new taxing district. With a budget of $2M per year, the new

the algae and weed problems through contributions to the Geist Lake Coalition. Citizens Energy Group owns the reservoir but only treats the water if the algae affects “smell or taste” of the water. Marina Limited Partnership owns the only public boat ramp, collecting an estimated $400,000 annually in boat launch fees. Indiana DNR awarded the Geist Lake Coalition a LARE grant for $5,000 in the past (which was a matching grant and a drop in the weed treatment program bucket). And while all these groups have nominally participated in clean-up efforts through donations or grants, none of them have truly taken responsibility. Under a conservancy district, all homeowners in the district would participate financially via a special assessment each year on their property taxes. An estimate based on each home’s assessed value was posted on the Geist Lake Coalition website. These assessments would account for roughly one-half of all fees collected, with the other half coming from user fees — boat permits. This spreads the responsibility fairly to everyone who has a stake in the reservoir’s health, not just the lakefront homeowners.
ONLY THE SURFACE
Many have been “stuck in the weeds” when it comes to the lake’s health, focusing only on algae and Eurasian milfoil treatments. After all, when you take up a collection annually and muster up $400,000 – that’s about all you can afford to focus on.

The bulk of the budget is allocated for dredging ($1.4M) which is currently not even being done (except for private dredging that individual neighborhoods or homeowners have contracted on their own).
LONG TERM SOLUTION
Creating a conservancy district gives homeowners around Geist Reservoir the financial means and ability to control their own destiny as it pertains to the health and preservation of Geist Reservoir. An elected 46 / GEIST MAGAZINE / MAY 2019 / atGeist.com
is an entire supporting cast of volunteers, many of which became block captains in the petition drive, that hustled donations or showed up to Geist Clean Up Days. But the ringleader and visionary that has dedicated more of his time and money to Geist Reservoir than anyone is Brian Hall. He, along with Cambridge resident and attorney Matt Troyer, put this Geist Conservancy District on their shoulders and worked the murky legislative waters to bring this to fruition. Best of all, Brian doesn’t even live on the lake. He, like several thousand others within the proposed district, lives off the water with no boat dock. Fellow residents, we finally have a structure and a plan to preserve Geist Reservoir for generations to come. It’s been a long time coming. To keep informed on the progress and next steps, follow the Geist Conservancy District Facebook page at facebook.com/geistconservancydistrict.

PIPPA MANN EXCITED TO PILOT NO. 39 DRIVEN2SAVELIVES CLAUSON-MARSHALL RACING CHEVROLET IN THE INDY 500 Photography Provided
For IndyCar driver, Pippa Mann, racing in the Indianapolis 500 is much more than some glorious endeavor. Every driver races to win, but for Mann, there is a deeper connection to her team and her sponsors. Clauson-Marshall Racing, the United States Auto Club National sprint car champion team, announced back in February that they are partnering with the Indiana Donor Network and their Driven2SaveLives campaign to field an entry for the 2019 Indianapolis 500 on May 26.

Carrying the No. 39 and the Driven2SaveLives campaign on my Chevy entry is an honor that I don’t take lightly, and I’m grateful to Tim Clauson and Richard Marshall for believing in me.” This is the first year Clauson-Marshall Racing will participate in the Indianapolis 500. The team was founded in 2016 in memory of beloved IndyCar driver and USAC champion Bryan Clauson by his father, Tim Clauson, and Richard Marshall. Bryan died in 2016 in a racing accident and, as a registered organ and tissue donor, he saved five lives and healed countless others.

After watching the way she handled the circumstances of last year with such grace, we were sure that if we could help her return to the speedway, we would.” The road to this point hasn’t been smooth for Mann. Last year, she just missed qualifying for the Indy 500 and fell victim to Bump Day. According to Mann, to be back in the car for this year means the world to her and isn’t something she is taking for granted. “It is incredible to be back,” she says. “I didn’t know after last May if I was going to be able to call myself an IndyCar driver

BACK THE BADGE RIDE & PRIDE EVENT COMING UP MAY 18 BENEFITTING OFFICER BINH DENNIS Writer / Josh Brown Photography Provided
Last October, Fishers police officer Binh Dennis and his wife were enjoying a ride on his motorcycle in Brown County before a sudden, near-fatal crash. In an instant, Dennis’s life changed.
It has been a long road so far for Dennis and will continue to be. More than anything, the accident has changed his outlook on life. He knows he is lucky to still be alive.
“For me personally, it was a huge mind shift,” Dennis says. “No longer do I take any day for granted. I never used to be a His wife, Mary, was fortunate to sustain deeply religious person. I was laying in the hospital bed, taking inventory of everything and realized that my legs were not functioning. I had a lot of questions, I was confused. It was quite the awakening.”
Dennis continues to push through the injuries, and today he is recovering and rehabbing in Fishers. Since he returned home on Dec. 18, the Dennis family has seen nothing but support from the Fishers community and their friends. “That day, I expected to come home and see a few friends gathered,” Dennis says. 52 / GEIST MAGAZINE / MAY 2019 / atGeist.com
“Instead, it was a couple hundred people standing out on my front lawn, welcoming me home. That in itself was overwhelming for me and seeing the support from the community has been incredible.” Today, Dennis says he is in a good place mentally. He has physical therapy and occupational therapy twice a week. The rehab continues to be a grueling process, but it is paying off and yielding encouraging results. Officer Dennis is now at a point where he constantly feels some sort of sensation in his legs. He has also reported controlled bodily functions as well as regaining some of his core strength. “Every week, it seems like, I get something that gives me a little hope that things are changing and moving in the right direction,” he says. Through it all, Dennis credits his wife, more than anyone, for how far he has come since the accident.

“I tell people this more often than my wife would probably care for me to say,” he says. “She has been my rock, my advocate and my warrior. She has fought so many battles for me going through all this. If it wasn’t for her, I would not be where I am today.” Dennis, a Fishers police officer for nine years and six years as a firefighter before that, has also seen overwhelming support from his brothers and sisters in blue as well as local law enforcement and firefighters from around Hamilton County. He is frequently visited by Fishers Police Chief Ed Gebhart and fellow officers and firefighters, something he is always grateful for. The Fishers FOP Lodge No. 199 has organized and is hosting the inaugural Back the Badge — Ride & Pride event on May 18. The event is a motorcycle and car show that will be held at the new Harley Davidson located on Reynolds Drive in Fishers. The registration fee is $25 per vehicle for those participating in the show. The event is cohosted by the Blue Iron Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club and Classic Cars & Nostalgia Motors. There will also be several categories for the motorcycle and car show, including the “Chief ’s Choice Awards” and “Binh’s Choice Awards.” The event is also open to the public. There won’t be an entrance fee for spectators, but donations will be accepted on site. The show will benefit Officer Dennis and his road to recovery. “When I heard that this was being put together, I was so excited,” Dennis says. “It involves things I am influenced by — I drove a motorcycle and have always loved cars. I’m excited to get out in the community again and see a lot of the friends I’ve ridden with. I’m thankful for the love and support I’ve gotten from my coworkers and everyone in the Fishers community. It cannot be overstated. They have been my extended family along the way.” For more information on the Back the Badge — Ride & Pride event, visit fop199.org. Fishers Police Chief Ed Gebhart is just one of many co-workers, friends and family that have visited Officer Dennis during his recovery and rehab.
