PROTECTING THE PAINT Lawrence North Alum Wins Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year Writer / Seth Johnson Photography Provided by Purdue University

Following the conclusion of this past Big Ten women’s basketball season, Purdue University’s Ae’Rianna Harris was named the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year, making her just the third sophomore

in Big Ten history to win the award. Long before she reached this impressive feat, however, Harris could be seen on the court at Lawrence North High School, where she gained a solid set of skills prior to moving on to the next level. “As far as individual development goes, any atGeist.com / JUNE 2018 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 9

of the coaches that we had could help you in whatever area you needed help in,” Harris says. “For me, it was working on post moves and different stuff down low.” After an impressive sophomore season at Purdue, it would seem that Harris has continued to build on the basketball know-

how she gained while at Lawrence North. Named second-team All-Big Ten by the media and coaches, she has the most rebounds (491) and blocked shots (180) of any player in Purdue program history over their first two seasons. Harris also broke the Boilermakers’ sophomore rebounding record, pulling down an impressive 304 boards over the course of the 2017-18 season. Having played basketball for the majority of her life, Harris remembers being introduced to the sport at a young age.

Ae’Rianna Harris became just the third sophomore in Big Ten history to win Defensive Player of the Year.

“My dad played basketball, and I wanted to be like him,” she says. “I kind of got the hang of it, and then fell in love with it, so I continued to do it.” While at Lawrence North, she especially gained a lot from her strength and conditioning coach. “She made a lot of crucial changes as far as how I grew gaining weight, gaining muscle and stuff like that over the two years I was there,” Harris says. Prior to her time at Lawrence North, Harris attended another high school in a nearby township. While at Lawrence North, she really cherished being a part of a team that had a clear vision. “Without knocking the school I was at before, it seemed like we had our goals, and for the most part, we met them,” Harris says of her time playing basketball at Lawrence North. “The only thing we didn’t get was our state championship rings that we wanted.” For Harris, playing basketball at Purdue had always been a dream. “I had been wanting to go here since I started playing basketball,” she says. So when that fateful day finally came, she was ready to commit. “Throughout the recruitment process, their letter was the one I was looking for,” she says. “And then, once I finally got it, that’s when I decided, ‘Alright, I’ll reach out and get a visit set.’ When I came here, it was no different than I thought it would be. It was actually much better. So it made the most sense to come here.” 10 / GEIST MAGAZINE / JUNE 2018 / atGeist.com

For the Purdue women’s basketball team, the 2017-18 season was one filled with obstacles. The team finished tied for 7th in the conference, with an overall record of 20-14. Regardless, Harris is still proud of how everyone in the locker room fought through adversity.

BUILDING WEALTH. One personalized portfolio at a time.

“As a team, I’m proud that we stayed on our two feet,” she says. “I’m pretty sure half of us were injured, and everyone was going through something, whether it was mental or physical. There was just a lot going on this past year.” Despite the impressive stats she racked up, Harris herself was dealing with a rather significant injury that she had to fight through. “Personally, I’m most proud of all the accomplishments I had given my situation,” she adds. “I was playing the last couple of months with a broken foot and still did some really good things.” Looking ahead to next season, the Purdue women’s basketball team will look to improve on last season with the ultimate hope of being crowned Big Ten champions. As for her own goals, Harris would like to build on what she did in her sophomore year.

High client satisfaction = over 90% client retention.

“Individually, I definitely want to maintain Defensive Player of the Year, as far as the Big Ten goes, as well as go up in numbers,” she says. A fan of WNBA greats like Diana Taurasi and Tamika Catchings, Harris hopes to one day play basketball professionally, either overseas or in the WNBA. For now, though, she’s just focusing on another season with the Boilermakers.

Dads Only Amy Beverland Elementary Dads' Club Tackles Any Task Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger Photograph provided by ABE Dads’ Club

They’re not just an ordinary group of parent volunteers who get hooked into helping with odd jobs at the school where their children attend. Meet the Dads’ Club of Amy Beverland Elementary. Led by President Scott Maskel and Treasurer Chris Knox, this dedicated group of about 25 dads has been doing amazing things for Amy Beverland and the Lawrence community for about 20 years now. Their mission is simple: To be committed to making their children’s ABE experience the best it can be and to have fun while doing it. Sure, part of their agenda involves a social

aspect and helping with dad-type tasks. Dads' Club hosts a pancake breakfast with Santa and they run Chess Club. Twice a year, these swell dads meet for a work day to complete various cleaning, maintenance and beautification projects. “If something needs to be painted, fixed or cleaned inside or outside of the school, we’re doing it,” says committee chair Jose Lusende. “We want to do all we can to provide a safe and pleasant environment to all our children.” But beyond the social aspect and dad-type tasks, this group of guys is an extraordinary force that raises money to provide things for classrooms, runs the basketball league and 14 / GEIST MAGAZINE / JUNE 2018 / atGeist.com

runs the Susan Jordan Memorial Golf Outing fundraiser. During the 2016-2017 school year, the club raised almost $38,000 to be used towards new technology for the school, supplies, recognition awards and more. “We are so grateful for the generosity of all those who’ve contributed, either with their time or a financial contribution,” Maskel says. The Susan Jordan Memorial Golf Outing is the club’s largest fundraiser each year. The 2018 golf outing was held May 21 at the Old Oakland Golf Club and sold out all 36 slots of foursomes. The event raised more than $20,000 for the school in its first and second years. Numbers for this year’s got outing haven’t been tallied yet, but the club

is hoping to see the success topping the previous two years. The majority of the Dads' Club funds for the entire year are raised at the May golf event. The basketball league is another big money maker for the club. The men conduct evaluations, placing the players in teams according to grade or skill level, and they host the league’s games. Dads' Club also heads up the popular annual Kids vs. Teachers game at the Lawrence Education and Community Center. The matchup is not only a big hit with families, but the night ends with awards, which are courtesy of Dads' Club too. Besides the fundraising events, the Dads' Club is the brawn behind the annual Communication Night at the school. While students and families are in the classrooms checking out the latest projects the students have accomplished, the dads are in the kitchen cooking and serving up a full spaghetti dinner, complete with salad, breadsticks and dessert. Amy Beverland Dads' Club is looking for more good men to join their force. If you’re an Amy Beverland Dad looking to meet other great dads and become more involved in your child’s school, the club wants you. You can be as involved as you want — attend meetings or select the events at which you want to help. Meetings are held monthly at the Media Center. Check the amybeverland.ltschools.org website for dates and times. For more information, contact President Scott Maskel at scott. maskel@morganstanley.com.

Fishers Youth Assistance Program team: Amy DeLucia, Trisha Straus, Lynda Carlino and Andria Ray.

F I S H E R S Y O U T H A S S I S TA N C E P R O G R A M H E L P S F E E D KIDS IN NEED THROUGH SUMMER MEALS PRO GRAM Writer / Josh Brown Photography provided by Brian Brosmer & FYAP

More kids than you might think go hungry each summer in Fishers, but one organization is changing that. The Fishers Youth Assistance Program (FYAP) started in 2014 and has been supporting local families and youth through programs like family education, tutoring, mentoring, camps and more. More than 11 percent of kids in the Hamilton Southeastern School District are on free or reduced lunch. Last year, a group involved with local food banks, churches and the school system began brainstorming how to provide food to those kids in the summer that were in need with school out.

The Summer Meals Program was born and quickly became a program offered by the FYAP. “That almost 12 percent does not sound like a lot, but that is still 3,400 kids in the HSE School District,” says Lynda Carlino, FYAP Board Member and head of this year’s Summer Meals Program. “Once May hits and school is out, those kids get nothing. That group, last year, thought, ‘Well that is really scary. What happens to these kids during the summer?’” There was clearly a need. Last year, the first Summer Meals Program served breakfast and lunch to about 165 students, which comes out to 12,000 meals served. After the success and turnout for the first program, JUNE 2018 / FISHERS & GEIST MAGAZINE

Carlino and the FYAP has its sights set on an even higher goal this summer. The group is aiming to serve about 36,000 meals to 400 students in the 9-week program beginning June 4-July 23. So, how does the Summer Meals Program work and how can you help? Each week the FYAP committee for the Summer Meals Program gets together and puts orders in for ingredients and food. They work closely with the HSE Schools dietician, who comes up with a menu for the children. “The dietician puts together a menu of things that the kids can make themselves,” Carlino says. “Things like macaroni and cheese, sandwiches, spaghetti, cereal and more. For each child each week we put

together a bag for the week of groceries that they need to go along with that menu.” Aside from monetary donations, which are always welcome and appreciated, Carlino says a critical need for the Summer Meals Program is simply volunteers. Volunteers are needed throughout the summer to pack all the meal bags for the children and to meet on Mondays to deliver the bags to the kids and their families. This year, the FYAP will be distributing the Summer Meals bags every Monday at Fishers Junior High School between 1:307:30 p.m. and parents who have signed up for the program will be able to come during that time to get food for their kids. “People want to help, which is great,” Carlino says. “We will need about 40 people each Monday starting at 8:30 a.m. to get things set up all the way to shifts of people from 1:30 to 7:30 p.m. when we will be handing out the bags.” Carlino, who recently retired as the Executive Director of the Southeastern Program of Recreational Team Sports (S.P.O.R.T.S.), was approached by Fishers Deputy Mayor Leah McGrath about joining the FYAP board and helping out with the Summer Meals Program. Despite being barley a month into her retirement, Carlino says the opportunity to serve and help others through the program was too enticing.

Lynda Carlino, FYAP Board Member and head of this year’s Summer Meals Program.

“IT IS ALL ABOUT OUR KIDS. ANYTHING WE, A S A D U LT S , C A N D O T O G I V E O U R K I D S A S T E P U P I N L I F E , W E S H O U L D D O I T. L I F E I S H A R D E N O U G H A S I T I S . “It is a lot of work, but it is a really amazing program for the community,” Carlino says. The community response to the Summer Meals Program has already been overwhelming as local businesses and parents have jumped in to help out. “Most people, when I talk to them about this program, are shocked and surprised,” Carlino says. “No one stops to think that in a community like Fishers there are still some people who are struggling. The second response from people is, ‘How can I help?’” Serving 36,000 meals sounds like a daunting task, and, according to Carlino, the costs for each meal comes out to $1.85 or $66,600 FISHERS & GEIST MAGAZINE / JUNE 2018

total. It is a big number, but through the help of donations from local businesses and those in the community, Carlino says it is a reachable goal. One event that is an extension of the FYAP is Pack the Cruiser, which comes up June 2 at all Kroger stores in Hamilton County. Co-owners Jerry and Lynn Hupp

J.L. HUPP JEWELERS CLOSING DOORS AFTER 41 YEARS Writer / Matt Keating Photographer / Ron Wise

After more than 40 years in business, J.L. Hupp Jewelers, Fishers, will be closing its doors later this summer. The store, which is independently owned and operated by Jerry and Lynn Hupp, has a lot of loyal customers. Lynn says that she and Jerry felt the time was right to close the store. “It’s going to be very difficult, but also, it is exciting to know that we will be able to

take some vacations and travel and spend more time with family and friends,” Lynn says. “Anyone who has owned their own business, especially retail, knows that you are on the job 24/7, whether you are working or at home.” Hupp Jewelers will be open until August 31, with many great items on sale. “Because we do not have anyone to buy or take over the business, virtually everything will be on sale,” Lynn says. “Jewelry, watches and clocks as well as all our jewelry cases, equipment and office furniture.” FISHERS & GEIST MAGAZINE / JUNE 2018

Jerry and Lynn are looking forward to talking to many of their loyal customers over the next couple of months. “The memories are endless,” Lynn says. “We have built our business relationships with our customers. We have customers that have been coming to us since we opened our doors 41 years ago. We have watched our customers come in with their children, and now those children are adults who are coming in with their children. J.L. Hupp Jewelers started out in the Galleria at Glendale Shopping Center in 1977.

“We were in that location until 1992,” Lynn says. “We really liked it at Glendale and were able to meet a lot of great customers. We opened our doors in this Fishers location in June of 1991, and it was a good move.” The Hupps are members of the Retail Jewelers Organization, which is strictly for the small independent jeweler, as well as Jewelers of America and the Indiana Jewelers Association of which they have been board members for several years.

“We will be starting our celebration of retirement on June 9,” Lynn says. “We invite everyone to stop in and say goodbye over the next two to three months and take advantage of some great bargains. Make plans to buy some of your Christmas gifts early this year at great savings to you. We will continue to serve our customers until we close the doors.

“Larger stores won't repair or service jewelry or watches that weren't purchased there,” Jerry says. “We have been able to survive because we have always based our business on service and taking care of all the needs of our customers when it concerns jewelry.” An item doesn't need to be purchased at Hupp Jewelers for store employees to repair or service the item. “Our motto has always been, ‘If it is important to you, it is important to us,’” Lynn says. “So no matter the monetary value, we will do our best to serve our customers. We have continued to design and create custom Jewelry as well. And we have the largest selection of Estate Jewelry in the area.” Jerry says he and Lynn are looking forward to enjoying their free time and being free from the day-to-day operation. “We will travel, enjoy our many hobbies and continue to enjoy our Church and organizations for which we volunteer,” Lynn says. In the meantime, the Hupps want to say goodbye to all of their loyal customers and friends and thank them for their support and friendship all these years. JUNE 2018 / FISHERS & GEIST MAGAZINE

We are going to miss our customers, and I am sure it will be a very sad day when we lock the doors for the very last time.” J.L. Hupp Jewelers is located at 7808 E. 96th Street. You can give them a call at 317-845-0777 or visit them online at jlhuppjewelers.com.

FROM START TO FINISH GEIST HALF MARATHON, FISHERS YMCA PARTNER UP FOR INAUGURAL SPARK!FISHERS 5K Writer / Josh Brown . Photographer / Brian Brosmer

f you haven’t heard by now, Spark!Fishers is coming, and it’s sure to be a jam-packed event. The inaugural Fourth of July celebration will not lack in entertainment with everything from a national concert at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater, street fair, community parade, fireworks and more. For those looking to get their feet moving, the Spark!Fishers 5K will be right up your alley. The 5K will be organized by a dynamic duo partnership in its first year — the Geist Half Marathon and the Fishers YMCA. It’s a partnership that has both organizations excited to join together for the inaugural race. “When we started discussing this partnership possibility, it really made a lot of sense,” says Geist Half Marathon President Mike Napariu. “The YMCA does a race in the fall, and we do our event in the spring. The Spark!Fishers 5K is right in between, so it made a lot of sense to try and work together as opposed to compete.” “The relationship with us that was already preexisting laid the groundwork for this,” adds Fishers YMCA Executive Director Jake Reardon-McSoley. “We’ve always enjoyed helping promote the Geist Half here in our community. We had discussions early on about how we could come together and join forces for this event. It’s a perfect partnership for us.”

honor the past, present and future of Fishers with the start/finish line in the heart of the Nickel Plate District in front of the Liberty Plaza statue on Municipal Dr. Runners and walkers will complete a course that flows counterclockwise from 116th Street to Lantern Road, then west on 126th Street, back through Roy G. Holland Memorial Park to conclude at the start/finish line on 116th Street in front of Liberty Plaza.

The 5K race will kick-off a full-day of Spark!Fishers events and festivities on June 30 and will begin at 8:00 a.m. The course is sure to be exciting for runners and bring another premier race to Fishers each year.

“This is a unique opportunity for runners,” Reardon-McSoley says. “They will be able to run right down the middle of 116th Street, which has never been done before. It will be a really nice way to showcase some of the immediate downtown areas of our thriving community. We will get to show off one of our marquee parks over at Holland Park, which is a great way to honor the past. There has been an intentional effort to pay some respects to our roots, to the past and all the good work that has gotten us to where we are — moving into a new, innovative future.”

The Spark!Fishers 5K race course will

people another option for the year,” Napariu adds. “Runners don’t like to run just one race a year. This race will really showcase the city of Fishers and what it is becoming — a place where people want to be.” The Geist Half Marathon and Fishers YMCA are 50/50 partners for the Spark!Fishers 5K event, which means the proceeds from the race will go back into the mission of each organization in promoting health and fitness throughout the community equally. The partnership also means the two organizations will split the duties of the race. The Geist Half Marathon hosts its 13.1 mile, 10K and 5K race on the third Saturday of May each year, while the Fishers YMCA hosts its Wishbone 5K race on Thanksgiving morning every year. So, both organizations have plenty of experience and a solid track record on how to organize successful race events. That experience will be crucial to the success of the inaugural Spark!Fishers 5K event. “The Fishers YMCA will handle most of the logistics and running the course, which they’ve done in the past,” Napariu says. “The Geist Half Marathon will take care of a lot of the marketing and promotion of the event. With the experience that we have, we don’t think it is an event that is going to tax either of us too much splitting the duties. We are looking forward to a great event.” “There are probably more people than we’d

like to admit that don’t even know that the Geist Half Marathon and the Fishers YMCA are nonprofit organizations,” Reardon-McSoley says. “We are able to really join together and raise a lot of money that is going right back into this community.” Volunteers will, of course, be needed for the 5K and throughout the entire Spark!Fishers event as well. There will be more than 500 volunteer opportunities available for the Spark!Fishers event and about 55 of those positions will be solely for the 5K race. “I serve on the volunteer community for Spark!Fishers at large, and there is a lot going on behind the scenes,” ReardonMcSoley says. “There literally is something for everyone. If you have a group of friends or co-workers that want to serve together, we have plenty of opportunities for that. Adults, students, all ages are welcome. There are a variety of shifts and most are 4-hour shifts. For the 5K, we will need

people helping us at the start/finish line, people manning the water stations and lots of other opportunities.” “Volunteers are critical,” Napariu adds. “Anyone who says they want to volunteer, we will find a spot for you. There are all sorts of opportunities, whether it is with us and the 5K or Spark!Fishers in general.” To register for the inaugural Spark!Fishers 5K visit sparkfishers.com/5k. For volunteer opportunities, visit sparkfishers.com/

volunteer. Volunteer applications are due by June 15. “This is an exciting opportunity to be a part of history,” Reardon-McSoley says. “With this being the inaugural Spark!Fishers 5K, we are going to have some outstanding medals and shirts for every participant. Those will be great keepsakes for everyone to mark the occasion. This really is the turning of a chapter, and we are going to make this a very special and memorable race.”

into the hospital for the sick kids. He comes at least once a month, sometimes twice a month.

“Hey, Robbie. How’ve you been?” a nurse asks. “Now, what have you got for us Robbie?” a therapist says with a wink. Even Roscoe, the Golden Retriever who usually is by far the most popular guy around, recognizes Robbie and jogs his way up for a pat.

“He’s awesome. Look right there,” says Chuck Dietzen, M.D., medical director of pediatric rehabilitation at Riley. “They finally did a book on him, the ‘Awesome Man.’ What Robbie’s proven is it’s not a matter of size or age. He’s changing the world right where he is.” Robbie smiles. He is a quiet boy, a boy of few words. But he is a boy who speaks volumes through his good works.

He has thrown birthday parties for teen girls with cancer. He has raised money for custommade doors and colorful walls at Riley. Robbie’s motto: “You don’t have to be big to make a big difference.”

You most certainly don’t. Robbie has proven that. “It was my parents,” Robbie says when asked how this whole thing got started. “They wanted to do something special when I grew up. They started it and I picked it up when I was about three.”

Yes. Stephanie and Rob Blackwell wanted their son to know the world was bigger than him, that not all children had it so well, that life isn’t always easy. “He’s got a mom and dad that have been very good to point out how blessed he is,” says Dr. Dietzen. “Not everybody is that good looking, that smart and that good of a person. We get kids here who have nothing and he makes up for it. He has a great heart.” It started with Robbie’s first birthday party. The Blackwells, who are also Geist residents, decided they would ask for no gifts. Instead, they asked guests to bring school supplies, backpacks and clothes to give to kids in need through the School on Wheels organization. As he grew up, Robbie watched his birthday become something wonderful, something that was more than celebrating him. He really latched on to helping others.

“He kind of took it over and it’s his thing now,” Stephanie says. “We stay out of the fray. I just drive.” Dr. Dietzen is the bird in Robbie’s ear. He finds out what is needed at the hospital and goes to Robbie. “I tell him when I want to see it carried out,” Dr. Dietzen says. “I will play the Robbie card no doubt. Happy to do that.” A lot of people depend on Robbie. He is known as the kid who will stand up for classmates who are bullied or outcast. He is a big community helper, dropping off goods for public service workers. He is also the youngest person to be named a board member of Timmy Global Health, Dr. Chuck’s non-profit that tackles global health challenges. Robbie loves it all, but he especially loves Riley.

42 / GEIST MAGAZINE / JUNE 2018 / atGeist.com

One time, he showed up with 13 wagons full of donations. Just months ago, there was a girl with cancer at Riley getting ready to turn 18. Her wish was a shopping spree, but she was too sick to leave the hospital. Robbie went to work. Within days, he had received donated items from the most popular teen clothing stores. He landed a pair of tennis shoes she wanted that had not even been released yet. He never met that girl, but that was okay. He knew he had done well for her. “I like how the children have something fun to do,” Robbie says. “And they’re really happy. (Seeing their smiles) is the best thing about it.” Follow Robbie on Instagram @robbieadventures and his YouTube channel robbietubeHD.

“We are very excited to welcome Mitch Holden into the Wildcat family,” Penrose says. “He has a lot of energy, and we were Mitchell Holden, the new Lawrence North impressed with what others had to say High School Girls Soccer Head Coach, has a about his work ethic, character and his strong set of goals for the team next season, commitment to his players.” and he firmly believes they can all be met. Writer / Matt Keating Photography provided by Lawrence North

“My goals for next season are pretty extensive,” Holden says. “I would like to win sectionals, compete for a Conference Championship, maintain our team GPA of over 3.8 and have numerous All-District, All-Conference and Academic All-State Sectionals.” Mike Penrose, Lawrence North’s athletic director, says Lawrence North is coming off an 11-8-3 season, including a berth in the Marion County tournament finals and the school’s first ever IHSAA sectional championship.

Holden is looking forward to leading the team to new victories and has already been busy preparing for the new season. “Currently, along with Lawrence North, I am an Assistant Coach for Marian University Women's Soccer,” Holden says. “Prior to this year, I was the Head Girls Soccer Coach at Mooresville High School. At Mooresville, we were Sectional Runnerups in 2016 and Co-Mid State Conference Champions in 2017.” Before he was a coach, Holden was in The United States Navy for five years, 44 / GEIST MAGAZINE / JUNE 2018 / atGeist.com

completing two combat deployments to the Persian Gulf and was a Command Fitness Leader. “I am extremely excited to join the Wildcat family, and continue the statute of excellence set forth by the athletic department,” Holden says. “I look forward to leading these girls and watch them become outstanding young ladies, but also help create a winning, championship culture surrounding the Lawrence North soccer program.” Holden says the girls soccer team is in a unique situation this season with many players returning this year. “I firmly believe that seniors win championships, and we have 11 returning seniors,” Holden says. “We have a lot of young talent as well to help us reach our

full potential and to keep up our winning culture in the future.” Holden stressed that “Grace Moore and Ryli John are two exceptional players that will have a big impact on our season. Both will be playing soccer at the next level. Anslyn Freije is a great technical player that will be at the heart of our midfield. “Our back line consists of four seniors,” he adds. “So much leadership and experience on defense should keep us competitive in every game.” Holden says that goalkeeper Elyse Moser will be a key factor on defense as well. “Ellie Bisard, Lauren Koehl, Leah Sheldon, Sidney Swindell, Allie Malloy and Brooklyn Stewart are underclassmen who I expect to step up in a big way. The team has already begun spring conditioning and open fields.” Holden added that “the girls have bought in and are locked into becoming one of the fittest teams in the state. Summer practices will begin the first week of June.” Holden says he was impressed with the team’s victories last season. “To cap off a winning season, they won the first sectional title in school history,” Holden says. “That is a great accomplishment, and we plan to reinforce it with sustained success in the years to come.” In addition to his duties at Lawrence North, Holden will be busy at home as well. He and his wife, Melissa, are expecting the birth of their first child, a son, around mid-May. He says it's been a busy but fun time. “I’m looking forward to bringing a winning tradition and culture to the Lawrence North Girls Soccer Program,” Holden says. “This school has an outstanding athletic department and a tradition of competing with the top schools in Indiana. I’m honored and blessed to have this opportunity to coach these outstanding young ladies and can’t wait to get started.” atGeist.com / JUNE 2018 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 45

Pearl Street Pizzeria & Pub Celebrates Grand Opening In Geist Writer / Pat Carlini . Photography provided by Josh Brown & Pearl Street Pizzeria

Owners Dave and Courtney Andrus opened their second location in early May.

t

he locally owned and operated Pearl Street Pizzeria & Pub has been a popular spot downtown since 2010 and is now open Geist at 10462 Olio Road.

Owner Dave Andrus says he knows this spot has changed hands a few times but, he’s confident Pearl Street Pizzeria & Pub will do well. “We are focused on good food first, with a great family atmosphere,” Dave says. “We make a lot of menu items from scratch, and we offer some great pizzas and sandwiches. Pearl Street is also just a fun spot to have a beer and watch a game.” Dave, his wife Courtney and their two daughters, Ella and Emerson live in the Geist area, and he says he’s been looking for a spot to open a restaurant in his own backyard for a while now. “When this spot opened up, I just knew this was it,” he says. Pearl Street Pizzeria & Pub General Manager, Tabitha Underhill says the new Geist location definitely adds a little more upscale, modern look to their Indy Pub style, but they kept the brick and wood floor look just with a little family style. “It features a large L-shaped bar with concrete countertops as the centerpiece of the pub, “ Underhill says. “But, we also have a big private room for any events and the option to add on a private patio.”

“We are focused on good food first, with a great family atmosphere.” - Dave Andrus -

Underhill says it all turned out great, but, the outdoor seating area to the side of the building may be one of her favorite spots. “We offer a private, comfortable setting for those beautiful summer afternoons in Geist,” she says. Something Pearl Street Pizzeria made sure they did bring from the downtown location were some of those long-time menu favorites such as the Hawaiian pizza with pineapple and spicy capicola ham, topped with a Thai-chili sauce and the chicken alfredo pizza with chicken, tomatoes, mozzarella and their homemade alfredo sauce. For those who enjoy building their own pie, Pearl Street offers a variety of gourmet items such as anchovies, goat cheese, kalamata olives and smoked ghost pepper-jack cheese. 48 / GEIST MAGAZINE / JUNE 2018 / atGeist.com

The new pizzeria and pub also offers a variety of starters such as the baked artichoke dip and mini calzones for guests to sample. There’s also full-sized calzones, wraps, oven baked pastas, soups and salads with homemade dressings. Guests can also enjoy a wide selection of craft beers, microbrews, wine and signature cocktails. Pearl Street Pizzeria & Pub also prides itself in being eco friendly by recycling everything they use and using biodegradable products for their to-go ware. Dave and Courtney - who have been in the restaurant business for 15 years also own three Pure Eatery restaurants, including the downtown location and the one in Fishers that opened in 2015 on 116th street with partner Jason Jacobi. Dave is hands on as well and says there is a lot more to the restaurant business than making work schedules.

INNOVATION FOR THE FUTURE McKenzie Center Prepares Students for Placement in the Workforce Writer / Josh Lowe Photography provided by the McKenzie Center

Lawrence Township Schools offers an option that many other school districts don’t: its own campus for practical career learning. The McKenzie Center for Innovation & Technology (MCIT) is not only giving high school students practical experience, it’s also placing them into careers right after their graduation.

Located at 75 Street near Shadeland Avenue, MCIT allows students to explore areas of vocational interests in a range of areas. Classes range from auto mechanics and collision repair, business education, construction, cosmetology, biomedical technology and information technology and computer science. MCIT offers a variety of practical and real-world experiences as part of the high 50 / GEIST MAGAZINE / JUNE 2018 / atGeist.com

school curriculum. Students experience this practical environment in many ways: through laboratories, a construction and auto shop and even a fully-functioning restaurant. MCIT offers its curriculum in conjunction with students’ regular high school curriculum. High School students are able to take career classes as electives. The aim of MCIT is for students to complete these

career programs to lead them to college or a career choice. MCIT is one of many centers throughout the state preparing high school students for career placement. Many do not realize, but most companies are not necessarily concerned that their employees have a bachelor’s degree. In fact, certifications in areas such as coding often are enough to place graduates in careers right after high

school. These opportunities - coupled with grants and scholarships for trade school save many students from years of debt in post secondary school. “The students have incredible skills. Information Technology is hiring right out of certification programs,” says Frank Svarczkopf, MCIT Director of Career Education. He is proud of the opportunity MCIT gives its students to work with atGeist.com / JUNE 2018 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 51

professionals in their chosen field. Indeed, this practical experience allows students to take on the role of an expert in their future careers. Engineering and biomedical students brainstorm issues affecting community health, working with local health professionals to understand these problems. Using the CAD system and 3D printers, students can make prototypes of their designs and present them to experts.

Recently, the MCIT’s biomedical students completed senior projects that won several state championships. One of the projects was a skin cream that would fluoresce when contacted with suspected cancer. Students even worked with patent attorneys to possibly bring their product to market. In addition, the MCIT’s robotics team is now in its 9th year of competition. “We’re turning out problem solvers,” Svarczkopf says. “Kids that can think on their feet, work in groups and can follow directions.” Most importantly, students at MCIT understand the importance of being at work on time, ready to work in groups and express their own ideas. It is the aim of MCIT that, “Each student will strive for his/her personal best in academics, civic consciousness, individual responsibility and interactive professional and personal skills.” The center enrolls more than 2,000 students from both Lawrence Township high schools.
