Geist resident Brenda McGinley says the field of private investigation looks nothing like it does on TV. There are no clandestine meetings with clients in dark seedy locations. There are no questionable methodologies or techniques that could endanger her clients or the agents out in the field. “I’m a finder of facts,” she says. “It is vital to provide our clients with verified and accurate information so they can make their own lifechanging decisions.” As the CEO and Director of Operations for International Investigators, McGinley CEO, Brenda McGinley may be based in Indiana, but she has clients across the country and around the world. and accessories, school and office supplies, and, best of all, the store continued to offer old fashioned sodas and shakes, baked goods and a deli menu. Instrumental in keeping the building’s history alive is Fortville native and entrepreneur, Lenzy Hendrix. Hendrix bought the building in the 1980s, his first of many acquisitions of historical Fortville buildings.

Indulge Café, right in the heart of Fortville, is cranking out sinful treats and sandwiches and “He had a love for history, and a great love keeping a piece of Fortville’s history alive. for the town of Fortville,” says Crystal Hendrix, Lenzy’s daughter-in-law and The café at 10 S. The store continued to has transformed into a few shops since first offer merchandise until just six years ago opening in the 1920s, but back in the day, when Lenzy was ready to retire. All the the building was most known for Heche’s pieces fell into place when Lenzy’s son and Five and Dime store. Though the store no longer continued to offer merchandise as it morphed into Indulge, the Hendrixes have taken care to preserve the memories held so dear by customers in the area. The original old-fashioned soda fountain remains, and old-fashioned candy cases handmade for Heche’s remain, proudly featuring delectable candies from Good’s candies in Anderson. Indulge features a whole array of irresistible treats, like sundaes, shakes, banana splits and old-fashioned sodas. Among the favorites that keep packing in the people are the Pink Elephant (a nod to the iconic creature along Pendleton Pike reminding guests to stop in and stock up on beer, wine and other spirits) and the Wooly Mammoth. Both treats are built in a giant martini glass. The Pink Elephant starts with strawberry ice cream, then it’s topped with strawberry topping, Sprite, whipped cream and finally

rock candy. The Wooly Mammoth instead is chocolate based, with chocolate ice cream and hot fudge. No matter which treat you choose, you’d better come with a big appetite, because their scoops of ice cream are softball sized (for the regular) and baseball sized (for the kid sized). “What can we say? It’s called Indulge, it has to be big,” Crystal says. The café spreads its fun beyond occasional

visits for a sweet treat. The back half of the shop can be rented for birthday parties, bridal or baby showers, reunions or even company functions. You can choose between having just sweet treats or just food or both for your party. Indulge participates in community events too. The café joins in Fourth of July fun for Fortville’s Fourth of July Festival, sidewalk sales, special events in the park, and they offer indulgent specials for Halloween to kids dressed in costume. hang out on Wednesday nights. “Some regular customers who are antique car buffs asked us one night if they could gather around and show off their cars,” Crystal says. “We said yes, and once a week, they come, bring their cars here, hang out and socialize.” Stop in for a treat today at Indulge, 10 South Main Street, Fortville. SAFE SUMMER SWIMMING Writer / Lisa Thompson RN, BSN

Summer is finally here, which means families in Hamilton County will be beating the heat at the pool, at the reservoir, the beach or at the river. Nothing is better on a hot day than being refreshed by a cool dip in the water. While water activities can be a ton of fun, they can also be very dangerous without the proper safety precautions. According to the American Red Cross, an average of 10 people per day die of unintentional drownings. And 4 out of 10 drowning deaths per year involve children age 14 and younger. These are scary statistics, but with the right preparation and education, your families can have a fun and safe summer in the sun. The best way to prevent swimming accidents is to teach your children to swim at an early age. Floatation devices alone cannot keep your child safe. Statistics show that if a child does not learn to swim by the third grade, they more than likely never will. Here in Hamilton County, we have multiple places to get children educated on the swimming basics. Being comfortable and competent in the water is essential to their safety.

and friends are done swimming that all of the toys and floats are put away. Having toys and floats in a pool can attract small children back into a pool while no one is watching, making an accident more likely.

impairs judgment and coordination, ability to regulate body temperature and your sense of distance and direction. It takes the body one hour to process one alcoholic drink, so please drink responsibly.

For younger children, adult supervision is always necessary. Children can drown in less than two inches of water. Teach your children to ask before going near water, and don’t assume that another adult will be watching them. Assign an adult to watch the children and take turns so that everyone has a chance to relax and enjoy the water.

Finally, learning CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) can save the life of your loved one. The average time it takes to get medical attention in an emergency is 7-14 minutes, depending on location. If a drowning has occurred, this is crucial time lost. According to the American Heart Association, only 46 percent of those needing CPR outside of the hospital get the immediate help they need. There are a number of classes available through the American Heart Association and American Red Cross.

For older children, help ensure their safety by having them swim with a buddy. Statistics show that 32 percent of drowning accidents happen when swimming alone. Swimming with a friend ensures there is someone who can get help if something goes wrong. Make sure you know who your child’s swimming buddy is and do frequent “buddy checks” throughout the day. Also, have a phone close by in case of an emergency. Adults should avoid alcohol while swimming, especially if they are responsible for monitoring children. Drinking alcohol

In summary, always be aware of dangerous situations and be present with your family when you are in or near water. Make sure you are not just giving rules to your children about water, but also educate them on why the rules are important. Following these simple steps will not only keep you safe, but it will also allow you to have more fun this summer while enjoying your family. Have a wonderful safe summer!

AGGRESSIVELY ORGANIC AIMS TO END FOOD INSECURITY “My grandparents had a garden in their 90s. A system that would allow growers to Writer / Josh Lowe Photography provided by Aggressively Organic

The idea really began long before that lecture at IU. Partlow remembers how his grandparents farmed their own vegetables, and he realized how much food was wasted in industrial farming. Lettuce simply shipped from the West coast will use dozens of gallons of water and are caked with chemicals and preservatives. To Partlow, there had to be a better way.

simply cut and watch the vegetable or fruit grow back.

Over the years, Jonathan developed and patented a hydroponic system that grows plants not in soil but in water. No expensive lighting techniques, chemicals, planters, or watering systems needed. Within each box grows an individual plant, and there is no competing root system from other plants 14 / GEIST MAGAZINE / JULY 2018 / atGeist.com

so very little water is needed. The plants he tested in his nutrient-rich water weren’t genetically modified and they thrived on water straight from the tap. His house was full of growing plants - from lettuce and kale to bok choy and carrots. Eventually, Partlow set up shop in Launch Fishers. After developing the prototype, he and his team were ready for a beta test. In each Aggressively Organic box was planted seeds and nutrient-filled water. Growers need just water the box, keep it close to light, and watch it grow. Partlow was amazed to hear that some customers are still reaping the bounty of just one head of lettuce - months after the shipment. “Imagine having a three month supply of baby greens growing on your countertop, ripe for a salad?” says Partlow, who notes

@AGGRESSIVELYORG

that many places around the world have a food deficit due to poor soil. He hopes that Aggressively Organic could ship its system across the world to places like the Virgin Islands, which imports more than 90 percent of its food. Aggressively Organic will soon be taking more orders for its boxes. Partlow anticipates selling plants in packs, some pre-grown and some ready to be planted. He hopes to begin an exchange program allowing for people to use their lettuce or kale until the plant’s supply dwindles and then exchange the old box for a new, fresh plant. Partlow is also working to provide a low cost, LED light that will cover all the plants in a pack. Each pack of plants will come with special directions for watering and lighting. Partlow is especially proud of the educational work of Aggressively Organic. He looks to further educate the community with work in local schools. Partlow provides the plants and is often a guest speaker in some local classrooms. Recently, Brooks School Elementary students were able to watch tomato plants grow while learning math concepts of measurement and arithmetic and science concepts of photosynthesis and watering. In the future, Partlow hopes to become a part of the Internet of Things: each box might be wifi enabled, sending messages to people’s phones with special instructions or alerts. Each box might feature QR codes that unlock virtual educational lessons and activities for a family to learn and enjoy together. “We want to end food insecurity in my lifetime,” Partlow says. “So many people don’t know they can grow their own organic food. And they haven’t been given a way to do so until now.” Through their unique system, Aggressively Organic aims to give food security back to, as its website says, We the People. Cathedral Legend Linda Bamrick Talks Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame Induction Writer / Seth Johnson Photography Provided by Cathedral

As a native of Indianapolis, Linda Bamrick grew up with basketball as a major part of her life. This hoops upbringing made her recent induction into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame a dream come true. “No words can really be put to it,” says

Bamrick, who served as the head coach of the Cathedral girls basketball team from 1987 to 2012. “That place is pretty intimidating. I’m walking through the halls, and I’m thinking, ‘Wow, I’m up here with the likes of these great people.’” During her years at Cathedral, Bamrick racked up several achievements, leading her teams to 393 wins, including 11 sectional atGeist.com / JULY 2018 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 17

titles, four regional championships and three semi-state titles. Her teams also won 2000 and 2001 3A championships, following a 1999 3A runner-up finish. “We had our ups and downs, but that was a special group,” Bamrick says, looking back on the championship teams. “That was a very rewarding time and experience for all of us.”

“I’m probably most proud of the relationships that I was able to build, not only with my assistant coaches, because many of them are still dear friends to me now, but also with my players.” A graduate of Roncalli High School, Bamrick has early memories of playing basketball.

GRAND OPENING 6/25 10 Week Challenges Are Kicking Off Weekly Call (317) 588-1640 to Reserve Your Spot!

“That was the first sport I probably ever played,” she says. “I grew up with two older brothers, and we had a basketball goal in our driveway. Whatever sport was in season, that was what I played, but basketball was always my passion.” Eventually, she would go on to play four years of high school basketball at Roncalli. The impact coaches had on her in high school first sparked her interest in coaching as well as her overall love for sports. “I was the youngest of four children, and sports were a big part of our family,” she says. “It was kind of like a family bond, whether it was going to my games, watching my brothers play or just going to Pacers and Reds games.”

After earning her bachelor’s degree from Manchester University in 1984, Bamrick immediately jumped into coaching — a leap she says was a little daunting. “I took my first job at Mitchell, Indiana, which is down there just south

of Bloomington, and I was a head basketball coach at Mitchell at 21 years old,” she says. “That was an awakening type of experience. It was shell shocking a little bit.” After a brief stint in Chicago, she eventually wound up at Cathedral in 1987, where she’s been ever since. “When I came back to town, I did a substitute teaching position at Cathedral,” Bamrick says. “I was the varsity assistant coach in basketball for a year in 86-87. And then, the [head coach] position became open that following fall of ’87. I was in the building at that time, going to be a full-time teacher, and I was offered the position.”

Bamrick led the Cathedral girls basketball team to 393 wins, 11 sectional titles, four regional championships and three semi-state titles in her time as head coach.

BUILDING WEALTH. One personalized portfolio at a time.

In addition to her state championships, Bamrick also coached seven Indiana All-Stars during her time at Cathedral. For her, part of the joy in coaching was seeing her players blossom post-high school. “I’m probably most proud of the relationships that I was able to build, not only with my assistant coaches, because many of them are still dear friends to me now, but also with my players,” Bamrick says. “Just to be able to follow their career paths, some of them played at the Division 1 level in college and then following what they’re doing right now. I still stay in touch with a lot of them.” Although she’s moved on from coaching basketball, she will always cherish the memories she has from those years. “It was just a really special time in all of our lives,” she says. “I have scrapbooks of those years that some of my former players have made for me.” Currently, Bamrick still holds several athletics-related positions at Cathedral. In addition to teaching physical education and health, she serves as the director of Cathedral High School intramurals. She is also a physical education department chair, as well as the varsity assistant softball coach.

Some people are lucky enough to do what they love and create a meaningful life by pursuing their passion to make a difference in the world. Aaron and Kim Del Prince of Fishers are just that sort of lucky. The couple took their love for all things Disney World and turned it into a mission to help children with life-threatening illness and their families enjoy a free, week-long Disney vacation. The Del Princes found their way organically by vacationing at Disney World regularly, connecting with friends who also share their love of Disney and inviting them to hang out and reminisce. In 2007, the couple invited a local group of friends that they had met in Orlando to share a meal and reminisce about their trips. The second year, word got out and that number

reached 50 Disney-loving friends. Shortly after, Aaron was introduced to the work of Give Kids the World Village and became inspired to connect their love for Disney to their mission. Give Kids the World Village became the housing partner for the Make-A-Wish Foundation more than 30 years ago and since that time they have provided housing for 150,000 families. Disney donates the park tickets and trinkets and they have many partners that donate the food for the Village. The Make-A-Wish requests for Disney account for approximately 56 percent of all their requests. So providing free housing is a huge undertaking because a week’s stay at the Village costs around $5,000 for a family for a week. But it is well documented how much these trips help the children and their families. Aaron and Kim created Magical Wishes 20 / GEIST MAGAZINE / JULY 2018 / atGeist.com

for Kids, a 501c3, Fishers-based charitable organization designed as a “pass-through” organization, which means they send 100 percent of their proceeds directly to Give Kids the World Village. Over the past 10 years, Magical Wishes for Kids has organized small events like movie nights and Dine to Donate. But their focus has primarily been on an annual fundraising event called, Indy Disney Meet. Now in their 10th year hosting the event, they have watched it grow from a local event of 30 to a Midwest event of 1,100 Disney fans from around the country with the majority coming from Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Kentucky and as far away as Florida. To date the group has raised more than $100,000 for Give Kids the World. Over the past decade, Indy Disney Meet has grown exponentially along with the size of the event.

“It is sort of like planning a wedding every single year,” Aaron says. “It takes 7-9 months of planning by the 25-member volunteer planning committee.” Aaron and Kim are also volunteers with other full-time responsibilities. This is 100 percent a labor of love for volunteers. The 2018 Indy Disney Meet will be held on August 25 from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds. “This free, super fun, Disney gathering is perfect for the whole family,” Aaron adds. “Enjoy games, dole whips, crafts, displays, presentations and more. Other event highlights this year will include a Kids Hall with a full mini-golf course, Virtual Reality activities, Disney Princess Meet and Greet along with the 501st Legion bringing characters from a galaxy far, far away. Famous Disney Expert and Podcaster Lou Mongello, Roxy Darr, Singer from Los Angeles, that is the voice behind Disney inspired music, auction items with Disney Art from Imagineers and autographed collectibles by the original artists. Raffle items such as Disney Gift Cards will be included as well. The food is also donated by favorite restaurants like Chick-fil-A nuggets, Papa John’s pizza, Perkins mini-muffins and more.

THE BASE LAWRENCE CO-WORKING SPACE PROVIDES AFFORDABLE OPTION FOR TENANTS Writer / Seth Johnson Photos provided by The Base at Fort Harrison

The area near Fort Harrison State Park has grown quite a bit in recent years, with businesses like Jockamo Upper Crust Pizza and Triton Brewing Company thriving in the Lawrence community. With all the development, a group of businesses, nonprofits, and government entities is looking even further into the future by offering a co-working space in hopes of building the Lawrence economy even more.

Located inside the Fort Harrison Office Suites building, at 9165 Otis Ave., Lawrence, The Base is a nonprofit coworking and business-incubation space made possible by nonprofit founders (Lawrence Community Development Corp. and Greater Lawrence Chamber of Commerce) and private building owners (Yeager Properties and Envoy Companies). At The Base, members have access to a shared space with a professional environment. Amenities include private conference rooms, a shared kitchen, a free 22 / GEIST MAGAZINE / JULY 2018 / atGeist.com

mailbox, Wi-Fi and more. An idea that was originally conceived by The Lawrence Chamber, The Base was started two years ago with the intent of providing shared workspaces with access to professional networks and resources. “The Lawrence area has improved, becoming busier and more well-known over the last three years,” says building manager Alicia Vettiner (of Yeager Properties Inc.). “For example, Fort Ben

started their farmers market last year for the first time ever, and it was a success.” According to Vettiner, the price should especially be appealing to those looking for an office space. Members pay an upfront annual fee of $525, which compares favorably with other nonprofit coworking spaces in the metropolitan area. “For an entire year, a Base member pays half the cost of any other co-working space around,” Vettiner says. For those who work from home, a coworking space can especially come in handy. “It's more professional to meet clients at a business setting versus an office out of a house,” Vettiner says. “It gives them dedicated quiet space with no interruptions.” So far, response to The Base from the Lawrence community has been great. “Everyone is always very intrigued to know what The Base is,” Vettiner says. “A lot of people are setting up their own business and aren't ready for a suite just yet, The Base is a better alternative for them. Our tenants here like seeing our open space being used, versus a building with no traffic.” For those who are interested in becoming a member at The Base, the process to join is pretty simple. “If you are interested, you can contact myself or Chris Barnett,” Vettiner says. “I'm the building manager of Fort Harrison Yeager Office Suites, where The Base is located. Chris Barnett is in charge of The Lawrence Development Corporation, who also has a suite here.” The Base at Fort Harrison is located inside the Fort Harrison Office Suites building, at 9165 Otis Ave. You can also visit them online at TheBaseLawrence. org or call Yeager Properties Inc. at 317532-9500 and ask for Alicia Vettiner, building manager of The Base.

Believe it or not, Indianapolis it’s got the extra space needed to host this was the scene of the Cold Spring Murders, full-length play. one of the most gruesome double murders back in 1868. The adaptation, written by playwright Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger Provided Photography

James Trofatter, captures the scene of the murders of Jacob and Nancy Jane Young, 150 years ago. A crime from that long ago hardly seems relevant, but this play offers some shocking details you never would have imagined possible in post-Civil War Indianapolis. The victims, the Youngs, were found the next day along the White River in Cold Spring. Both had been shot, Guests are sure to get an authentic historical and Mrs. Young’s body had been burned. experience at “The Trial of Nancy Clem.” Three business associates of the Youngs Although most of Candlelight Theater’s were quickly found and accused. But the productions are staged in the Benjamin most scandalous part of this tale is that one A true story about the double murder of an Indianapolis couple, “The Trial of Nancy Clem,” a Candlelight Theater Production, sets the stage for the murders and follows the sensational trials of three accused suspects. The production runs July 20-21 and July 27 and 29 at the Cook Theater.

of the three suspects was a woman. That’s right, one of the three accused suspects was Nancy Clem, Indianapolis’ first female ever accused of murder. Two of the three accused suspects, William Abrams and Silas Hartman (Clem’s brother) were found guilty and imprisoned. But, all historical accounts reflect that Clem never served time for the murders of which she was accused. She did, however, endure four trials before it was over, and much of the mystery behind the story remains unsolved. Candlelight Theater’s Creative Director and Geist resident, Donna Wing, plays Clem in the production. Wing is a local actress who founded Candlelight Theater in 2004. Candlelight Theater is a group of 22 men and women who put on productions in the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site. Their productions often revolve around historical events, given their venue, and the group

often performs mysteries in the theater during Halloween. “We’ve done short story mysteries before involving the tale of the Cold Spring Murders,” Wing says. “I’ve played the role of Nancy Clem before, but never from this perspective. This is a full-length play, so we have the time to delve into the details of the story, and this time, we get to see it from Nany’s point of view.” Although Wing has played Clem in smaller productions of the story, she actually wasn’t interested in playing the role this time at first. “I didn’t want to play Nancy this time. I’d always played her from a witness’s perspective, and that’s always come with a presumption of guilt there,” she says. “But I was the most familiar with her character, so I studied her more and embraced the role.” Exploring Clem’s possible innocence is just one of the intriguing aspects of the play. The play brings into focus the role played

by a famous Hoosier. Benjamin Harrison, the 23rd President of the United States, was co-counsel for the prosecution on Clem’s first trial and lead counsel on the subsequent three. “Guests will get a flavor of the style that made the orator such a successful lawyer,” Wing says. “Harrison gave long, persuasive speeches. You’ll see how Harrison elevated this 25-day trial into the trial of the century and nationwide spectacle.” “The Trial of Nancy Clem” offers more than just a historical account of the crime and the ensuing trials. It also weaves in the differences between women in post-Civil War society and modern society. Clem was a business lady. She became involved in a borrowing and lending business (much like a Ponzi scheme in modern times). Clem’s involvement in business handed her a black mark in society from the start because most women of that era centered their

lives around their duties as a housewife. But, that certainly didn’t prove her guilt in the murders. You will be surprised at the volume of circumstantial evidence presented against Clem. “This play will make you sit back and think what if maybe, just maybe, Clem was innocent,” Wing says. No matter what you decide about Clem’s guilt or innocence, you can’t miss out on “The Trial of Nancy Clem.” Tickets are on sale now at bhpsite.org.

TALKING TRASH Local Resident Stan Schenher Has Kept Roads Clean For Nearly 15 Years Writer / Josh Brown Photographer / Ron Wise

He patrols the streets of Geist and Fishers with one, simple goal in mind — to pick up trash.

up trash. It is a hobby that, despite turning 68, Stan has continued with no plans to stop anytime soon. The hobby started out as an idea while out on his weekly runs to stay active. He’s been called The Trashrunner, but nowadays Stan is seen walking the roads or sometimes riding his golf cart with his grandkids, trash picker out and a keen eye on grabbing trash that most people wouldn’t even see.

For nearly 15 years, Fishers resident Stan Schenher has become a face of the community. Somebody that almost everybody knows or has at least seen around here. And how could you not see him? “I’ve picked up trash since I was in my late teens, early twenties,” Schenher says. “But I Most days, Schenher dons a highlighter really got into it more in the last 30 years or yellow shirt and his bright red St. Louis so, wherever we’ve lived. I’ve adopted three Cardinals hat, then he hits the road to pick streets this year and am getting a fourth one.

I used to be called The Trashrunner. I had a hip replacement when I turned 65 though and became more of the Trashwalker. “My next phase is likely to become the Trashcrawler,” Schenher jokes. “I just like picking up trash and trying to keep the roads clean. It is a fun thing to do and something I’ve just always enjoyed doing.” Schenher mainly patrols three roads that he’s adopted: 116th St. to 101st, Brooks School Rd and 106th St. from Geist to Fall Creek. It certainly is not a hobby that Stan does for praise. Schenher estimates about 75 percent of the trash he picks up isn’t seen by drivers or others running or biking along the roads. But that doesn’t bother him one bit. “I just do it because it’s the right thing to do,” Schenher says. “I get frustrated because

if you drive in some of these other areas closer to downtown and down Binford, it looks terrible sometimes. People like to complain about trash on the roads, but nobody wants to touch it or pick it up. I try to do my part and pick it up.” Schenher has been a Hoosier for quite a while now. Stan and his family moved to Northern Indiana in 1980 and lived in the Castleton area. Around 1993-95, his family moved to 96th Street, and he has now lived in the Hamilton Proper area in Fishers for about 14 years. The Schenhers have three daughters and eight grandkids (with a ninth on the way) — all living in Fishers. “We like this area and this community a lot,” Schenher says. “We’ve really never wanted to live anywhere else since we’ve moved here.” Sixty-five was a year that almost did Stan in. Not only did he have the hip replacement, but he also had four bouts of gout, four sinus infections and prostate surgery. “I never knew why it all happened, but then I found out later that my parents never bought the extended warranty on me and it ran out at 65,” Schenher jokes. Nearly three years removed from the hip replacement, Schenher, for the most part, is getting around just fine. He has weekly walking goals, and, most weeks, he walks about 20 miles spending roughly 10 to 15 hours each week picking up trash. And, yes, he does it year-round — rain, snow or shine. “Some guys play golf, some play tennis, I just like picking up trash,” Schenher says. “The older I get, it is kind of my hobby. I do this every day. When I ran, I used to have to take a couple days off. Since I’m walking now and have slowed it down, I don’t have to take any time off. It is my form of exercise and something that I try to do to help out in a small way.”

At 68, Stan Schenher can still be seen picking up trash along his adopted roads: 116th St. to 101st, Brooks School Rd and 106th St. from Geist to Fall Creek.

Stan’s hobby is one that doesn’t go unnoticed. Most days, drivers passing him on the road honk and wave, and he says those small gestures of encouragement keep him going. One time, in particular, a car stopped on the side of the road and a child jumped out and ran over to bring Schenher a card thanking him for the work he was doing. The Fishers Department of Public Works has even helped out by picking up the bags of trash Schenher leaves after a day’s work. Aside from general worries that his wife has of him being along the roads each day, Stan’s family supports his hobby as well. Every once in a while, some of Schenher’s grandkids will tag along with him on the golf cart and jump out to grab trash. As you might imagine, Schenher has picked up all kinds of trash over

the years. He’s found phones, clothing, pillowcases, car parts, shoes, purses, wallets, your standard paper, cans, plastic cups and more. Phones, he says, are found more often than you might think as people leave them on top of their car before getting in and they slide off once they start driving. Stan is always keen on getting those types of items back to their owners. Overall, Schenher has a simple message for those who litter, even when they think it is something “small” or not that bad. “Just keep it in your car until you get home,” he says. “Everyone has a trash can. I don’t consider myself an environmentalist wacko, but I think all of us have to do our part to keep the environment clean. I just believe in trying to leave the world a little better than you found it. If everybody did a little, nobody would have to do a lot.” Next time you see Stan, honk or wave and thank him for the little he does each day that makes a big difference.

Coordinator. “The overwhelming majority of the applicants to this program are persons of color, and this will make a big difference for students of color. They’ll see them in a leadership role, and that makes it easier for them to relate to that teacher.” The DBAC Program took a few years to get off the ground. “The program really began as a way to address the non-traditional college student. That is, a student who doesn’t show up to campus for orientation and then plan on an uninterrupted four-year run at college,” says Tim Harshbarger, Executive Director for Human Resources for Lawrence Township Schools. “DBAC is about the student to whom life just happened. For me, that was military service, and for my Assistant Director of HR, Mrs. Tammorra Golder, that was a family. We both went back to school later in life, and that presented some specific challenges, the most important of which was making basic ends meet on a daily basis. Yet, both

Excellence doesn’t happen by chance it takes planning and failure before “They had the desire, like we did, but success happens.”

This partnership is more than just a mechanism for getting teachers into the classroom. “For many of our DBAC teacher candidates it is a pathway to a better life both personally and professionally,” Harshbarger says. “Teaching is a great career choice and comes with benefits, salary and a pension. That’s a big deal and a life-changing one at that. I’m so proud these folks.” One candidate summed it up the best. “The program has given me a better chance at life and one in which I can bring my life experience and pedagogy learned through this program to the classroom,” says Michael Johnson, Family Partner Liaison for Harrison Hill Elementary. Though the inaugural class for the DBAC cohort program hasn’t completed their certification yet, Lawrence Township and IUPUI both consider the program has been a huge success. “Lawrence Township’s HR department has been fantastic,” Magee says. “They’ve been supportive of their employees enrolled in the program, given us access to their facilities, and they’ve been as accommodating as possible. The convenience of the evening classes in a nearby location removes the hurdle for these students. This is a great collaboration and Lawrence Township is a great partner.” The success of this flagship program will likely pave the way for DBAC programs in other school districts and talks to make that happen are already underway. In the meantime, those who have aspirations of becoming a teacher don’t have to cast those dreams aside. Now they have options. The Indiana University School of Education at IUPUI has a variety of certification programs for post-Bachelor degree candidates who aspire to become elementary school teachers or secondary education teachers. INDIANAPOLIS SAILING CLUB COMMODORE TALKS HISTORY & NEW SUMMER EVENTS Writer / Jon Shoulders Photography Provided by Josh Brown & Indianapolis Sailing Club

Think you need to travel to one of the coasts, or perhaps up to one of the Great Lakes, for a unique sailing experience? Think again. For more than six decades the Indianapolis Sailing Club (ISC) has offered sailing programs and instruction for individuals and families on Geist Reservoir and is equipped with a 100-slip harbor, a clubhouse and 13 acres of beach, playground space, fire pits and picnic areas. Founded by local builder Jack Messmer as a private sailing club 12 years after the 1943 construction of the Geist Reservoir, the ISC was launched to promote the sport of sailing and small-boat sailboat racing and through the years has included local business leaders like Eli Lilly and Bud Hook, former owner of the Hook’s Drug Store chain. The ISC currently offers structured sailing education for adult members, six one-week camps for youths aged eight to 17, as well as a sailing class for children of members aged four to seven. Youth camps are open to members and the general public. “We’re typically at around 300 memberships, and we’ve been at that number over the last 10 or 15 years,” says Eric Guion, who serves as Commodore of the ISC and chairman of the organization’s 25 board of directors. Guion, 58, learned to sail as a kid back in the 1960s and 1970s after his parents joined the ISC, and he and his brother sailed competitively through high school and college. atGeist.com / JULY 2018 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 37

“Sailing activity has gone down as motorboat traffic has increased on Geist, and right now we’re trying to find creative ways to get people out on the water who might be intimidated by the sport or worried about safety,” he adds.

The club holds races on Wednesday nights and Sunday afternoons, as well as four club-wide fleet races on Saturdays and Sundays. Wednesday races are held in an all-skate format, in which all types of boats race against each other with a prearranged time, distance and speed formula used to handicap each performance. The ISC hosts local, regional and national regattas, and this year the club is hosted the MC Sailing Association Masters Regatta Championship from June 13 to 16. The regatta brought in 40 to 50 boats from around the country for three days of racing. The club also hosts two collegiate regattas each year, with Indiana University as the sponsoring college racing team. On August 4 the ISC will partner with the City of Fishers to host the inaugural Cardboard Regatta. Teams will design and create boats from cardboard and compete in a race in the club’s harbor, with food and music to follow. Guion says the average ISC member age is in the low to mid-50s, and the board of directors is working to create new opportunities and programs for the younger local population and stress the social benefits of the club, in addition to its competitive and instructional components.

ONCE YOU LEARN TO SAIL, YOU CAN SAIL THE REST OF YOUR LIFE - ERIC GUION

“We are adapting many of our activities, policies and programs to the needs of the 25-to-35 age group,” says Guion, a product manager for financial software company FIS. "For example, boat ownership can be a limiting factor for this demographic so we are working on ways to find used boats and assist new members with the minor repairs.” Guion says that while learning to sail requires time and discipline, the rewards are immediate and long-term, both recreationally and competitively for those who choose to race.

At Conner Prairie, you can go wherever your imagination takes you. With hundreds of acres to explore, including our newly reimagined River Crossing experience area, we’re igniting curiosity and inspiring guests to discover new lessons in the natural world that surrounds us.

“Once you learn to sail, you can sail the rest of your life,” he says. “We have members from 16 to 86. And for those who think it looks boring, I have taken a 20-year rugby player who had never sailed before, and now he can’t wait to get on the water. You can make the sport of sailing what you want it to be serious racing or casual cruising.” For more details on the Indianapolis Sailing Club, including membership and instruction info, call 317849-0021 or visit them online at indianapolissailing.org. atGeist.com / JULY 2018 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 39

Welcome Back

Colts Coach Frank Reich Talks Faith, Hoosier Roots & Grand Park Sports Campus Writer / Josh Brown . Photography provided by Brian Brosmer & Indianapolis Colts

rank Reich’s coaching career has truly come full circle, and he couldn’t be happier. The new Head Coach of the Indianapolis Colts is right back where it all started for him. Reich began his career in 2006 with the Colts as an intern before working his way up to quarterbacks coach in 2009 alongside Colts legends Tony Dungy, Peyton Manning and Bill Polian. Those relationships, coupled with a resume that now includes a Super Bowl ring as the Offensive Coordinator with the Philadelphia Eagles last year, have helped Reich land a job that he says is a dream come true. In many ways, Reich is back home in Indianapolis. “If I could have written up a plan of what would be the ideal scenario, the ideal team and place, this was it,” Reich says.

“Indianapolis is where I got my coaching start. I came into the organization and got to work with guys like Peyton Manning, Tony Dungy, Jeff Saturday the list goes on, but these are great men. To get a chance to come back here now is pretty special.” The Reichs have ties to the Indy community, which has certainly made the reunion feel like a homecoming of sorts for the family. Two of Reich’s three daughters graduated high school in the area when he first started with the Colts in 2006 — his middle daughter from Hamilton Southeastern and his youngest daughter from Heritage Christian. “The Hoosier hospitality has been unbelievable,” Reich says. “This is like home to us. We have family in this area and developed close friendships from my first time here. I’m thankful for the opportunity to be back.” While Reich wasn’t the first choice for atGeist.com / JULY 2018 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 41

the position, the Colts quickly realized he was the best fit. After the fallout with Josh McDaniels, several reports said Polian, Dungy and Manning personally reached out to Colts Owner Jim Irsay and General Manager Chris Ballard to endorse Reich for the head coaching position. Reich watched from afar and, despite his interest, did not make the first move in having his agent reach out to the Colts. Instead, he decided if it was meant to be that it would be. Looking back now, Reich says the endorsement of those Colts legends is humbling. “It really is humbling because those are some tremendous men, coaches and players,” Reich says. “In this business you just try to work hard and do your job. You work around a lot of great people and learn a lot from them. When people like that give you a vote of confidence, it means a lot.”

Faith & Football Reich has something on his resume that not too many NFL coaches have. After being drafted in 1985 by the Buffalo Bills and playing in the NFL for nine seasons, Reich took a break from football but knew he would want to return to coach one day. Before the desire to coach in 2006, Reich actually felt called to ministry and went to seminary. He even served as pastor of a Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, North Carolina — living out his faith and serving the community. Reich isn’t shy about his faith, either. He says it has played a vital role in his life and shaping him as a leader and a man. “I wouldn’t change one day of being in ministry,” Reich says. “It has really shaped and formed me as a person. Going into ministry was something I really felt called to do. I didn’t know where it was going to take me, but I knew that I loved coaching people and encouraging people. I learned about myself as a teacher during that time. To continue to develop those gifts and take them back into coaching in the NFL has been a lot of fun.”

Working Out In Westfield As the Colts gear up for their first season under Reich, they’ve found a new home for the summer — Grand Park in Westfield. The huge, 400-acre sports complex will host the team from the end of July through August for training camp. It is the first summer the Colts will work out at the facility in a deal the team announced back in September that will span 10 years. The Colts will host an open camp and provide opportunities for fans to connect with the team and the players throughout the summer. One of Reich’s first tasks after taking over as head coach was to visit Grand Park, and he has been nothing less than impressed by the facility.

Frank Reich returns to the Colts after serving as the quarterbacks coach in 2009 with Peyton Manning and Tony Dungy.

42 / GEIST MAGAZINE / JULY 2018 / atGeist.com

“The people here, the staff has been so accommodating,” Reich says. “When you are going to host an NFL team for training camp, that is a pretty big deal. This place is so incredible that it can handle it, but it isn’t just about the facility. It is about the people. We’ve found that the people here are top notch and helping us do something that is exciting for our team and the City of Westfield. “I remember the first time driving up,” Reich adds. “They told me a little about it, but as we are driving up you see all of these fields. Then you walk inside and there are three, full-size soccer fields. I’ve never seen a Luck or no Luck, Reich’s goals remain the same — playing hard and being in a facility like it.” position to get back to the playoffs. The Colts have built the team and the draft Getting Back that they wanted, and despite Andrew on Track Luck’s status for the season, Reich is confident that the team can perform at a With the season right around the corner, high level. Reich’s focus is to get the Colts back on track. He is well aware of the fanbase and “It’s all about the people and the process,” the team’s expectations. Reich says. “We just have to build the

team one player at a time and have the commitment and the work ethic. When that happens, it doesn’t take long. You can flip your record in a hurry in the NFL. I was just a part of it with Philadelphia. But we all have to do it together, and it really has to be an organizational thing. The players and the coaches have to be tight, and there has to be a trust in one another and a willingness to commit to fighting for it every day no matter what.”
