sales went through the roof during the COVID-19 lockdown as lake homeowners looking for an upscale dock system found this the ideal time to take the plunge, as it were. A number of celebrities have already done so. For instance, Gene Simmons from the rock band Kiss owns two. Wahoo Docks have also been featured in Alan Jackson videos as well as the Netflix series “Ozark.”
Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Amy Payne
This spring, when all of a sudden a good portion of the population found themselves stuck in quarantine, many people used that extra free time to invest in at-home amenities. For some, that meant upgrading outdoor living spaces. Others purchased new furniture. But for those with property on the lake, many reached out to Wahoo Docks, the industry leader in manufacturing quality residential & commercial aluminum floating boat docks. Wahoo Docks has been called the “Mercedes Benz of docks.” The company’s
Wahoo’s upscale dock system is often twotiered, including water slides that come off the top. Beneath are slips to dock your boat and areas for kitchens so that you have everything you need for a day on the water. Tim Osby, owner of Wahoo Docks, describes what sets them apart from other dock manufacturers. “From a technology standpoint, nobody does what we do,” says Osby, noting that they have developed two in-house systems that greatly assist Wahoo in being able to deliver strong, sturdy, steady docks to customers on time, that match or exceed the customer’s vision. The first system is called DOTS (Design & Order Tracking 8 / GEIST MAGAZINE / JULY 2020 / atGeist.com
System), which helps them manage the entire process. The other is called DREAM (Dock Rendering Engine And Modeler) that designs a dock in 3-D space using their algorithm to determine where each piece should go. “It allows us to analyze the dock, look at floatation to make sure it floats properly every time and put the dock into a fitted analysis program to ensure we get it right,” says Osby. “If it says we need 827 decking screws, that’s how many we’ll get. There really is nothing else that will ever come along in this industry that will rival DREAM.” Wahoo Docks are focused on four metrics: 1) strength & durability, 2) aesthetic appeal, 3) user experience, and 4) customer service. “Engineers design and oversee the construction of every dock,” says Josh White, Owner of Hoosier Docks, a local Wahoo Dock distributor. “Elegant details and 40-plus patented and proprietary products make a Wahoo dock the strongest and most beautiful one on the market.”
Wahoo’s exclusive gangway designs are 30% stronger than the competition. For marine applications, aluminum is efficient, durable and nearly maintenance-free. As strong as steel and better than wood, aluminum requires no protective coating, making it longlasting and gentle on the environment. Using products that won’t deteriorate means there’s no need to paint or stain your dock five years down the road. Wahoo Dock engineers also know that nothing disturbs the peace of the lake like a noisy dock so they created a dock that has bushings that insulate the main aluminum-to-aluminum connection points, which is where the noise comes from. They also insulate the junctures where the roof poles meet the roof and the main frame to keep them from squeaking. “We pair stainless steel components and our own HDPE components to ensure our gangways and docks last and stay noise-free,” White says. Unlike a typical dock that needs to be removed at the end of the fall, Wahoo Docks can be installed year-round and don’t have to be taken out seasonally. “There are Wahoo docks that are installed in Michigan and other northern climates that stay in the water year-round,” White adds. Customers appreciate high-quality, long-lasting products that not only look amazing but also enable them to enjoy their play time without having to worry about set-up, maintenance or any other issues. “Simply put, Wahoo Docks are the best on the market, period,” White says. “Our extra steps to make a top dock mean you spend more time enjoying and less time maintaining.” For more information about Wahoo Docks, visit them online at hoosierdocks.com or call 317-677-4755. atGeist.com / JULY 2020 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 9
health care workers and other essential personnel, such as fast food employees and UPS drivers. Look at our teachers, who put in countless hours of extra work to help us keep learning and ensure we are ready for our future. Look all around our community. See how people still care for each other, see how people are still fighting for a better world — like when people ran to support Ahmaud Arbery or when they raised money for food banks, including LN’s paw pantry. The pandemic can’t stop acts of kindness, as proven by Lawrence North’s kind week, and it cannot stop people from doing what is right.

— silver linings and clinging to hope and positivity in bad situations.
Like all other members of the class of 2020, my senior year was upended by COVID-19. I ran cross country and track for Lawrence North, and my senior track season was canceled after a single indoor meet. I was a director for our school’s dance marathon, which raises money for Riley Children’s Hospital, but we were unable to host our final event.
Just a few months ago, COVID-19 seemed like a distant threat. Our girls basketball team had just won a state title, and the boys were poised to win their own. Our student section was proven to be the best in the state. Our show choir was killing it at competitions, and the theater program had just put on “Great Gatsby.” Things were normal — arguably better than normal — at Lawrence North.
My list of losses, like every other student’s, can go on and on. Yet, I still have much to look forward to. Next year, I am studying political science at the University of Michigan. Unless my plans change, afterward I will attend law school. COVID-19 may have derailed my senior year, but it cannot dictate my future. I must stick to the belief that while the world is chaotic and distressing right now, better things will come. I am a firm believer in finding the good in all situations, which is why I made that topic the focus of my graduation speech. The following is my speech, which I gave for Lawrence North’s virtual graduation on June 2: “I do not have to remind you all that these are unprecedented times. We have been told that enough. I never imagined that I would be giving a virtual speech. But, to look for a silver lining, a camera is a lot less intimidating than a crowded coliseum. Plus, when I mess up, they can just edit it out. And so that is what I want to talk about
And obviously, it cannot stop us from graduating. Yes, our live ceremony was delayed, but we still did it. We graduated. As our fan section tweeted, they just could not handle us for a full four years. So, Class of 2020, congratulations. You have all worked so hard to be here and nothing can take that away from you.
One important thing to do in a graduation speech is talk about what comes next. Now, our futures all look different, whether it holds college, the military, a trade school, a new job or something else entirely. I feel obligated to throw out a few clichés about the future, so remember to “follow your But then, of course, schools across America dreams” and “find your passion.” But what suddenly shut down. When we are faced with adversity, we have developed the skills to not only persevere, but thrive! Lawrence Central has certainly provided an incredible educational experience in the classroom, but the extraordinary relationships developed and the lessons learned in addition to the instructional time are truly what have shaped us into the people we are today. DREAMCHASERS HARVEY HARRINGTON’S POPULAR BASKETBALL CAMP RETURNS JULY 20-23 Writer / Seth Johnson Photography Provided by Freckles Photography
Growing up, Harvey Harrington has very fond memories of a Vacation Bible School that his aunt put on. “I think it was the best Vacation Bible School, bar none. We loved it,” Harrington says. “Even talking to my friends today, they’re like, ‘Remember the time we had Vacation Bible School?’” With this longstanding memory still fresh
in his mind, Harrington aims to create an equally noteworthy experience for Central Indiana youths with his DreamChasers Basketball Camp. “That’s fueled my camps,” Harrington says. “I was like, ‘How can I put something together where kids can be themselves?’” Set to take place from July 20-23 at Mt. Vernon Middle School, Harrington’s DreamChasers Basketball Camp is open to kids from first through eighth grades, no matter their previous basketball experience. JULY 2020
The brother of much-loved Indiana Pacers player Al Harrington, Harvey focuses on fundamentals like shooting, defense and ball handling with his camp, while hopefully teaching some lasting life lessons as well. Like the Vacation Bible School from his childhood, Harrington strives to make his DreamChasers Basketball Camp stand out. Camp participants can expect all sorts of fun activities, as well as a live DJ. “Every time we have a camp, we have a dance area with a DJ set up,” Harrington
says. “When kids are sitting out from doing drills and stuff, we don’t want them just sitting there. Every year, I think hard about how I can make this different and how I can make it the favorite camp of any kid out there, even if they don’t play basketball.” Harrington’s DreamChasers Basketball Camp also receives an occasional visitor from time to time, whether it’s Indiana Pacers mascot Boomer or a former NBA basketball player. “I get guys to just pop in,” Harrington says. “Rodney Carney came in and sat in. Al [his brother] came in and spoke. Bonzi Wells has dropped by. These are friends. They care about what I’m doing, and they just pop in.”
Harvey Harrington with his mom and site director Mona Lawton.
With this year in particular, Harrington also plans to implement new health-related policies due to the coronavirus pandemic. Specifically, he says that the camp will not happen unless he feels absolutely comfortable that no one else’s health will be at risk. “I feel the same way about everybody else’s kids as I do my own,” Harrington says. “If I’m not going to put my kids in a situation, then I’m not going to put yours in a situation.” In addition to teaching kids about the game of basketball, Harrington aims to impact lives on a more personal level. “The response I’ve gotten back from this camp has been unbelievable,” he says. “I’ve had people write me personal letters saying, ‘Harvey Harrington. My son felt like he didn’t have a friend in the world, but now you’re his friend.’” While hooping may be at the heart of it all, DreamChasers Basketball Camp ultimately exists to change lives. “Everybody is not going to be able to play in the NBA, but that’s not what it’s about,” Harrington says. “Sports is about life. Sports instilled confidence and made me into who I am.” To learn more about DreamChasers Basketball Camp, visit DreamChasersBBall. com or find them on Facebook at Dream Chasers Basketball Indy. Healthy Steps Forward
F I SH ER S H EALTH DEPARTM ENT LEADER S GIVE U P DATES ON COVI D -19 TESTI NG & LONG-TER M GOALS
Writer / Josh Brown Photographer / Brian Brosmer
When the coronavirus pandemic hit the nation this March, it left state and local leadership, understandably, scrambling. When stay-at-home orders began, most people didn’t anticipate it being much longer than two or three weeks. But when reality settled in that it was going to take time to flatten the curve, Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness quickly got to work with his team on developing a recovery plan for the city. The $2.5M Fishers Recovery Plan was announced April 24 with a call, among other new programs and start-up loans, to
establish the Fishers Health Department. Free COVID-19 testing for all Fishers residents became available on April 30.
been with the Marion County Health Department for the last 10 years in a variety of roles. I believe my education and those experiences will combine to help me lead Today, the Fishers Health Department is this into something really unique. Right now, fully operational and providing a bevy of I’ve been busy meeting with community services to residents. Dr. Indy Lane, a Fishers stakeholders, organizations, our workers and resident, is the Chief Medical Director for the trying to develop our programming while Fishers Health Department. In June, Monica making sure we have our rules, regulations Heltz was officially named the Public Health and policies in place. My role is quite broad Director of the department. Both women and there is plenty to do.” have stepped into roles they describe as fluid “Both Monica and I have a clinical and extremely busy. background,” Dr. Lane says. “There are aspects of a health department, whether “Creating a health department is impressive it is COVID-19 testing or immunizations, and it is a bold action,” Heltz says. “I have that require some clinical expertise. a lot of enthusiasm for this position. I’ve JULY 2020
That is where I fit in. I still work fulltime as a physician and administrator at Community Health Network, but Monica and I meet on a regular basis and talk about whatever issues arise with the Fishers Health Department.” When the Fishers Health Department started, the major function was to provide free, drive-thru testing for Fishers residents, which continues to run smoothly today. Testing is easily accessible for residents and follows a simple process. Those looking to get tested simply visit fishersrecovery.com/ testing and take the online assessment. Then an appointment can be scheduled with an arrival time to the drive-thru testing site located at 3 Municipal Dr. Residents drive up, have the nasal swab test done, leave and test results become available within three business days. The easy access and quick drive-thru availability have made the testing run efficiently. For those who have seen the, seemingly painful, nasal swab tests where the swab is going quite far up the nose, Dr. Lane says not to worry because the Fishers COVID-19 testing is a simple and much less uncomfortable nasal swab.
As of June 16, 3.12% of Fishers (2,918 people) have been tested for COVID-19 with just 48 positive results. Although a small spike was detected in June, the overall results have been encouraging and such a spike could have occurred with more residents coming out to be tested. In terms of testing, the long-term goal for the Fishers Health Department is that all residents eventually get tested at some point. Unlike many county or state
“I WANT TO COMMEND MAYOR FADNESS AND HIS INNOVATIVE IDEAS AND BOLDNESS TO DECIDE THAT THIS IS SOMETHING IMPORTANT FOR OUR CITY.” - DR. INDY LANE -
“Our testing is a simple swab in both nostrils,” Dr. Lane says. “It is not painful and it is quick. It is a super easy process. You COVID-19 testing sites, Fishers does not don’t even have to get out of your car.” require residents to meet certain criteria, such as having symptoms, to get a test done. The testing is also available for Fishers Heltz is encouraging any and all residents to businesses and their employees. be tested.
“I would like to see an even bigger response in terms of testing,” Heltz says. “If you are just worried, want peace of mind or maybe you want to go visit a grandparent soon, then please come by and get tested. If there is anyone on the fence about getting tested, I would encourage them to do it.” Antibody testing is also becoming more available to the public. While the Fishers Health Department doesn’t currently provide that testing, Riverview Health’s new Fishers Urgent Care facility announced in June that they are now providing the antibody testing. “The antibody testing suggests that, if you are positive, you’ve had exposure to [the coronavirus],” Dr. Lane says. “What we don’t know for sure yet is if that translates into immunity. That is the difficulty. There is a lot we are still learning about it.” Mayor Fadness said in a statement back in April that, “The launch of the Fishers Health Department goes beyond a localized approach to COVID-19 but extends into the future where we can better support our community.” The COVID-19 testing is just one piece of the department’s responsibilities and is, of course, one of the main functions right now. The concept of a town or city having its own health department is still new. According to in.gov, Fishers is only the third city in the state of Indiana to implement its own health department. In most states, including Indiana, county health departments are the standard.
JULY 2020
So, what all does the Fishers Health Department entail? Beyond the testing, the health department also serves residents through vital records, immunizations, food and safety permitting, swimming pools, mosquito and rodent control, private water well and septic systems. The Fishers Health Department website details a full, bullet-point list of all that the department manages. So, is the Fishers Health Department crucial for the community? Both Dr. Lane and Heltz say yes. “We are in the middle of a pandemic, which might actually seem like a bad time to start a health department,” Heltz says. “However, it also highlights the importance of integrating public health into a lot of other policies. Our nation’s public health center was not prepared for this. Having a bit more control over our local situation can help our residents and our local businesses. It is a bold move and certainly not one that is seen very often. I believe it offers an opportunity to
create something unique and important that is tailored to the needs of the Fishers community.” “I want to commend Mayor Fadness and his innovative ideas and boldness to decide that this is something important for our city,” Dr. Lane adds. “As it relates to COVID-19, I also believe this department will set us up to vaccinate Fishers residents once there is a vaccine. My hope is that Monica and I can help identify what everybody in Fishers needs. This is a great city. It is exciting to be a part of something new and something, hopefully, that we can create as a model for other cities.” With some cities again seeing spikes in COVID-19, a general consensus, especially seen and heard on some national news outlets, is that a “second-wave” of COVID-19 could be on the horizon. Dr. Lane says we can’t and won’t know for sure until that happens, but she encourages residents to stick to the guidelines that have been laid out since Indiana began reopening.
“We want to encourage people to still wear a mask when they are out in public and do the appropriate social distancing,” Dr. Lane says. “Obviously, protesting, for example, is an important right that we have. But, if you are doing that, we recommend that you still wear a mask and distance as much as possible so we can keep COVID-19 numbers down and keep people safe. “We’ve talked about the importance of handwashing from the beginning and that really can reduce the risk of infection. We don’t know yet if the fall or winter months will impact what we see in terms of infection rates. But it is important that everyone exercise caution, wear masks out in public. If you have symptoms, please get tested. Protect your children and make sure they are washing their hands, too. I know it is difficult sometimes with children, especially social distancing, but it is to keep everyone safe.” For more information on the Fishers Health Department, visit them online at fishersrecovery.com/health-department.

Brooks School Park Art Wall Inspires Fishers Community Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided
Local artist Travis Neal wants everyone to know “we are all in this together.” It’s a message he likes so much he painted it on the new Fishers Art Wall at Brooks School Park.
“I (painted it) when I was on site the weekend of May 30 and 31,” Neal says. “The 40 by 5 wall took about 16 hours, from start to finish.” It was a job Neal was personally selected for. “Marissa Deckert of the Fishers Parks Department contacted me about the JULY 2020
project,” Neal says. “They were looking for someone to create the inaugural mural for their new art wall. As for the concept, their only request was that the hashtag be included in the design somehow, but the rest was left to me. I decided to make that message the primary focus and build the rest of the design around that message.”
I was mostly just honored to be the first artist featured on the art wall. Neal is pleased with his work. “I always try to incorporate some element of depth and perspective into my walls, with some parts drifting away, while others jump right out at you,” Neal says. “I also wanted this wall to grab people’s attention, so I used a lot of vivid colors and hard lines to help make that happen.” Neal is happy he was chosen to paint the park wall. “I was mostly just honored to be the first artist featured on the art wall,” Neal says. “2020 has not been a great year, no doubt about that. At the time the wall was commissioned and designed, this was simply a message about recovery in the struggle with COVID 19. Now we are seeing even more challenges, so I think it puts the piece into a larger context and gives a deeper meaning of optimism, hope and togetherness.” Neal has already had positive feedback from the public for his artwork. “The wall has barely been completed a week, and the response has already been incredible,” he says. “It seems to have really struck a chord. I didn’t realize the enthusiasm people would have for this message. It’s an amazing feeling to have one of my walls speak to so many people on that level.” Neal is currently busy with numerous art projects. “I’ve been an artist all my life but found JULY 2020
my true passion of large-scale work right after my wife and I moved into our Broad Ripple home,” Neal says. “I painted my first mural, a 12-inch reproduction of Van Gogh’s Starry Night, as a tribute to my mother, and I have been painting murals ever since. For the ‘Monday through Friday gig,’ I manage a sign shop in Carmel (Signarama). It works out well, giving me a day-to-day exercise in creativity and leaving my nights and weekends for my other artistic endeavors.” One of those endeavors was his traffic control box, Aquarium Surprise, at Pocket Park, 8700 E. 116th St. in Fishers. “I was also one of the four artists chosen to paint murals around the new development, Fishers District, on 116th Street,” Neal says. “That will be my next project, and I expect to begin work soon. It took local artist Travis Neal 16 hours to complete the Brooks School Park project.

The Road to Indy ELY NAVARRO HAS HIS SIGHTS SET ON THE FINISH LINE TO INDYCAR Writer / Josh Brown Photographer / Brian Brosmer
Elysiah Navarro is on the road to IndyCar, and he isn’t slowing down anytime soon. The Hamilton Southeastern High School student is barely legal to drive a car, but he has dreams of one day racing in the Indy 500. So far, Navarro is on the fast track to that dream. Last December, Navarro took first place in the Second Annual Lucas Oil School of Racing Scholarship Shootout at Sebring International Raceway in Florida, besting a pool of 26 other drivers. The coveted
scholarship guarantees him a fully paid entry into the 2020 Lucas Oil Formula Car Race Series, which had a delayed start in June, due to COVID-19, with races continuing throughout this summer and into the fall. The entry into the 2020 Lucas Oil Formula Race Series is a giant step toward Navarro’s goal of taking the wheel in IndyCar. “I’m very excited,” he says. “I’ve written down my goals for this year, and I read them every day. I want to get a podium in every race of the Lucas Oil Formula Car Race Series, with the ultimate goal of winning the championship for that series JULY 2020
and be a contender and win the Team USA Scholarship for racing. I know I am capable of doing it.” Probably the most impressive part of Navarro’s victory at the Scholarship Shootout is the fact that it was only the second time he had gotten behind the wheel of a Formula Car. The karts Navarro has been racing typically top out at around 72 miles per hour. The Formula cars hit speeds of more than 120 miles per hour. Many of the drivers Navarro was pitted against had also raced a series in Formula

before and already had a good feel of how to drive the cars. Ages of the drivers ranged from 12 to 25 years old, with Navarro taking home the win at just 15 years old. “We had the two-day school event to learn how to drive the cars,” Navarro says. “It was only my second time driving one, though. They are very different from karts. The aerodynamics and engine are all different. It is like a training car, a slower version of IndyCar. Coming in, many of the people I competed against had driven in this series before and driven these cars. So, when they
called my name as the winner, I couldn’t believe it.” Navarro’s passion for racing started at a young age. His father, Josh, raced motorcycles. Ely wanted to follow his dad’s footsteps, but his parents felt that it was far too dangerous. Around seven years old, Josh got Ely and his sister a go-kart. But it sat for almost three years because of a fear he had to drive it, mainly because of the noise with how loud the karts are. But, at 10 years old, Ely got over his fear and started racing in 2014. As Navarro started winning and earning honors like Rookie of the Year at Michiana Raceway Park in Southbend, he realized that this hobby was a full-on passion. So, the Navarro family relocated to the Indianapolis area in 2017, knowing that it was the place their son would need to be to chase his dreams. Along the way, Ely says his family has been as supportive as any teenager could hope for. “They have really influenced me a lot and their support is everything,” he says. “I want to learn how to get better and they want to see me reach my dreams. My dad has no background in mechanics. He and I have learned all of this along the way. From when JULY 2020
I first started in a junk kart, we just showed up and I drove. We have fun. That is really what it is about.” “Michelle and I are extremely proud of Ely, and all our children,” Josh says. “We teach them to have fun, work hard and do your best. Our primary goal is for each of them to grow up living and working their dream job, but they must have the passion and pour their heart and soul into those dreams. If they focus on the present moment and have fun, the happiness in their success will follow. As parents, we have structured our lives to help support their dreams as long as they are enjoying themselves.” Over the years, Navarro has gained several crucial mentors in the race world, including Jimmy Simpson — a successful kart racer who has also competed in Indy Lights & USAC Midget National Championship as well as Formula Atlantic — and former IndyCar driver Mark Dismore owner of
I WANT TO WIN THE INDY 500 AND THE INDYCAR CHAMPIONSHIP, MULTIPLE TIMES, AND PROVE THAT I AM A GREAT DRIVER. New Castle Motorsports Speedway. Today, Navarro continues races and practices weekly in New Castle. “They have all helped me out a lot and really helped me be a better driver,” Navarro says. “Alexander Rossi is someone I look up to a lot, too. I want to do what he did and win the Indy 500 on my first try.” In the long term, Navarro’s goal is also to gain more sponsorships. The sponsorship world can be tough, but with the advent of social media in the last decade, the possibilities are there. One way to accomplish that though is to simply keep winning and that continues to be the main focus for Navarro. “They say the money and sponsorships are out there,” Michelle says. “It is just a matter of making connections with people and winning enough races to get noticed.” Overall, Navarro wants to look back on his journey and know that he has left nothing on the table. He continues to put forth full effort on his road to Indy, and he hopes to inspire other young, would-be drivers as well. “I want to leave a big footprint in the motorsports world,” he says. “I want to win the Indy 500 and the IndyCar Championship, multiple times, and prove that I am a great driver. I also want to show other kids that you don’t have to already be in the motorsports industry to do this. If you work hard, you can do it, if you really want to.” For more information about Ely’s journey, or to find sponsorship opportunities, visit elymotorsports.com. JULY 2020

We live in these communities, our children go to schools in these communities,” says Dr. P. Jamieson Kay, President of Central Indiana Orthopedics. “We also want to take the practice outside the physical walls of the building, we want to get our patients back to work, back to sports, back to whatever activity it is that they’re missing.”
Here When You Need Us The Fishers Orthopedic Care Center is located at MedTech Park (14300 E. 138th St., Bldg. B). Our board-certified doctors and licensed specialists offer a wide variety of orthopedic services, both at our Walk-In Clinic—which has served over 500,000 patients—and through scheduled appointments for chronic issues. Our on-site physical therapy at the Fishers location provides a seamless continuum of care that includes ongoing communication with the patient’s provider.
Committed to the Community Our commitment to the well-being of the communities where we live and work extends beyond our practice. Patient-Centered Care Because Central Indiana Orthopedics is physician-owned and physician-managed, the doctors are able to make their own local, hands-on decisions about caring for their patients rather than having care dictated by a corporation. “My interest in medicine came from my dad who was a family doctor in a small town. I think his patients really loved him,” Dr. Kay says. “I wanted to be like that, and I think we strive to do that here at the whole practice.” Experience personalized, expert care in one convenient location. Grab a Scoop! JULY IS NATIONAL ICE CREAM MONTH Writer / Abigail Hake
I remember going out every Sunday with my grandparents for dinner and afterward enjoying a special treat. We’d head over to Baskin Robbins and pick one (or two) of the 32 flavors to enjoy as a family. Ice cream is an American tradition and something that is always in our freezers. It’s a national staple, especially during those summer months, which is why July is the perfect time to celebrate National Ice Cream Month.
The Old Custard Stand near 141st and St. Rd. 37 is a drive-thru oasis for commuters and locals alike.
In 1984, a Senator from Kentucky introduced a resolution to proclaim the month of July 1984 National Ice Cream Month. President Ronald Reagan signed the bill into law that same year and the rest is history! While the bill only specified July 1984 as National Ice Cream Month, the tradition carries on all these years later. Ice cream itself has no known inventor, but it’s said that as far back as 618697AD in China, an ice cream-like food was enjoyed. The first dish is said to be made of flour, buffalo milk and camphor. Not quite the ice cream we know today, but it’s fun to think that even way back when, people were looking for a refreshing frozen treat! Even Alexander the Great is said to have enjoyed snow flavored with honey and nectar. Culinary folks though do point to Naples as the birthplace of the first ice cream. Americans have a rich history with ice cream. The first mention of ice cream in the US was in a letter in 1744. Then, it’s said, that George Washington spent $200 for ice cream in the summer of 1790. That’s something like $5,500 today - Can you imagine? Even Thomas Jefferson made his own ice cream recipe which is said to be the oldest known ice cream recipe here in the states. FUN FACTS ABOUT ICE CREAM: • First Lady Dolley Madison served ice cream at the 1813 Inaugural Ball • Vanilla is the most popular flavor • It takes about 50 licks to finish one ice cream cone JULY 2020
• The U.S. is the largest producer of ice cream • A Dreyer’s Ice Cream tester actually insured his tongue for $1M • In 1920, Harry Burt put the first ice cream truck on the streets SO HOW CAN YOU CELEBRATE? With ice cream of course! Enjoy this cold, delicious treat with friends and family. Head to your local ice cream shop and grab a scoop! Maybe even try a few different and unique flavors before you settle on your tried and true favorite! You could also host a fun ice cream themed party. Have an “I Scream for Ice Cream” bar where everyone can make their own amazing concoction!. Make sure to have plenty of toppings including things like pretzels, M&M’S, fruits, sprinkles and nuts! You can also provide all different types of cones and even cute little bowls for your guests to create in. Maybe even offer fun decorations like wands, cupcake toppers and mini umbrellas. Think outside the box and take photos of everyone’s custom treats. Then have prizes for most creative, best looking and most daring. Your guests are sure to enjoy this fun event!
CRAVE Ice Cream Social is a popular spot during the busy boating season at the Geist Marina.
Or, if you are feeling ambitious, try your hand at making your own ice cream. Here’s a really easy recipe you can make at home in a bag. All you need is half & half (1 cup), sugar (2 tbsp), vanilla extract (½ tsp), ice (3 cups), salt (⅓ cup), and two plastic bags (one large and one small). Put the cream, sugar, and flavor inside the smaller bag and push out all the extra air. Put the ice and salt in the bigger bag and then add the small bag with ingredients. Lock well and shake for 7-10 minutes until the ingredients have hardened. Once it’s done, you can let it set a little more in the freezer while you make homemade chocolate chip cookies to create your own homemade ice cream sandwiches! There are lots of fun ways to celebrate this month, but, if in the end, you’d rather just try a different kind of ice cream each day of the month of July, we get it. Because remember, we all scream for ice cream!
For over 20 years, Sundae’s Homemade Ice Cream & Coffee has been a local favorite with their fresh homemade frozen treats.

EXPERTS PREDICT STUDENTS COULD RETURN TO SCHOOL A FULL GRADE LEVEL BEHIND
A fast, easy way to know if your child’s learning skills are behind, and what you can do to help advance them NOW The ‘summer slide’ (a.k.a. the ‘summer setback’) refers to students’ decline in reading, math, and other academic skills over the typical two months of summer, when school is not in session. But because the COVID-19 pandemic shuttered thousands of schools much earlier than usual, some learners will lose as much as five months of live classroom instruction. Experts predict this extreme absence could have a devastating effect on academic achievement for America’s 55.1 million students. In one study,* experts predict students returning to school this fall could display:

Cori Korn, executive director of the Lawrence Township School Foundation (LTSF), says the foundation has awarded the 2020 scholarships for Lawrence North (LN) and Lawrence Central (LC) students.
The foundation’s commitment to student success expands as the students become lifelong learners.
The students selected to receive the scholarship money are chosen because of their great work and accomplishments. “A scholarship committee reviews all applicants and awards the student who best meets the scholarship’s requirements,” Korn says. “The committee is made up of volunteers who are former educators, current educators and community members.” The scholarships are awarded to students who achieved their goals. “All scholarships recognize student accomplishments and help offset the
“The mission of the LTSF is to connect community and classrooms to provide the resources needed for all students to succeed,” Korn says. “LTSF scholarships encourage students to continue their education and follow their dreams.” Korn adds that the foundation has awarded more than $526,000 in scholarships to college-bound seniors in the MSD of Lawrence Township since 1986. “Most LTSF scholarships are endowed and were established to honor their namesakes,” Korn says. “Today, this endowment opportunity has expanded to include initiatives that impact current students while honoring the namesake.”
Korn says that this year, $40,000, plus two laptops were awarded to LC and LN students and alumni. Congratulations to the following recipients, which include the Dwaine C. Bell Memorial Scholarship winners, Katherine Burgin (LN), and Nicolas Taylor (LN). The LC recipients were to be announced at the Athletic Awards Night. The first official show Niemiller performed was on October 2, 2006, at an empty coffee shop. “I’d gone to an open mic to get a feel how it worked and found out that my teacher had signed me up to do a set,” Niemiller says. “I was totally put on the spot. I don’t know if it was performer’s pride or stubborn male pride, but I didn’t want to back down from a challenge. He performed in front of four other comics and a barista and scored a few chuckles. “I’m lucky that I got a couple of laughs because if not, that could have affected my confidence and changed the trajectory of my career,” he says. Niemiller lived in L.A. until 2009, at which time he bopped around from Terre Haute to Indianapolis to Pensacola, Fla., taking various “real jobs” to begin saving money to buy a house. He found, however, that as much as he liked having health insurance, he couldn’t stomach a desk job. “My brain just couldn’t do it,” he says. There’s a joke amongst comedians that it typically takes 15 years to become an overnight sensation. “I beat that trend. It only took me 13,” he says with a snicker. His big break came
in the summer of 2019 when Niemiller competed on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” (AGT), performing in front of judges Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, Julianne Hough, and Gabrielle Union, along with 3,400 spectators at the Dolby Theatre. The experience didn’t faze him. “That felt at home,” Niemiller says. “Now, if you told me afterward to go ask the girl out who was sitting in the fifth row, that would be mortifying to me. Large crowds have always been easier than one-on-one interaction.”

It’s me talking about my life.” Niemiller, who recently turned 38, notes that one of the toughest parts of this career is the way it affects the timeline of his life. “Being a touring stand-up comic puts strain on a lot of things,” he says. “When you’re 25, not married, no kids, on the road all the time with no health insurance, that’s easier to power through than when you’re 35 in that same position.”

“I like to try local restaurants — find at least one place that’s unique to that location,” Niemiller says. In the future, he hopes to return to acting, perhaps doing television, movies and podcasts. “As much of a life-changing experience as AGT was, if I’m still the dude from AGT years down the road, I’ve screwed up somewhere,” Niemiller says. “I want there to be more.”

Niemiller, who currently lives on the southside of Indy, played several sold-out shows at Avon’s Red Curb Improv Comedy Club earlier this year. He also appeared on WZPL’s Smiley Morning Show and the Pat McAfee Show. He loves performing locally as he says Hoosiers always have his back. “A lot of people have been surprised that I still live here,” Niemiller adds. “They are trained to think that if AGT says I’m from Indiana, that must have been years ago. Then they see me at Kroger and are like, ‘Oh, you’re actually here!’” And he’s happy to be here, as he adores Indy’s small town and big city feel.

“There’s theatre, pro sports and great restaurants, but you don’t feel like you’re in this huge metropolis where you have to struggle to get around,” he says. “If there’s traffic in Indy, it adds 10 minutes to your trip whereas in L.A. it can legitimately add four hours.”

eborah Prescott, owner of Red Ranch Shoppes, 214 Main Street, Fortville, didn’t have to go too far to come up with a name for her business. “My husband and I built a house in Fortville,” Prescott says. “Our home was the only red ranch in the neighborhood, so that’s where the name developed, and now there’s one other.” Red Ranch Shoppes opened in March of 2019 with a great community response over the last year. The shop reopened on June 15 after the COVID-19 shutdowns.

“I just knew I was going to open a home decor shop, and then vendors and artisans began contacting me to be a part of the shop,” Prescott says. “I selected the best, and we’ve grown into a tapestry of 28 different people who contribute to what our shop is all about. We are open seven days a week, which is so welcomed by our guests. Our inventory changes daily.” Prescott says that she has been pleased with how everything has turned out. “We expanded into the wonderful, brick-walled garage which gave us room for so much more,” she says. Red Ranch Shoppes has a wide variety of different items for sale. “We have home decor, farmhouse, vintage, florals, local artists, a candle maker, a jewelry maker, soaps, essential oils, embroidered items, crocheted items, a Farmhouse Table Manufacturer, Dixie Belle Paint and Spirit Wear,” Prescott says. Prescott is also available for in-home consultations. “I find, as some guests come through the shop, they just aren’t sure where to begin decorating,” she says. “I know decorating!” Prescott started her decorating career in the 1980s with the large home

décor business, Home Interiors & Gifts. She specialized in décor, planning and home organization. She says that in the early 1990s she moved from northwest Indiana to Southern California, where she started a successful interior decorating business of her own. She worked in multi-million dollar, beachfront homes and luxury gated communities. “There were a lot of people there with big homes that didn’t know what to do with their rooms,” Prescott says. “I enjoyed it. I would work in their homes and then go to the beach for lunch.” She and her husband still missed their kids and grandchildren, however, and soon moved to Indiana to be with them. Prescott went back into banking after she returned, but she still missed working in the home décor business. She says she also enjoys the more relaxed lifestyle of being back in the Midwest. Prescott is now looking forward to future stock that will be featured at the shop. “We are excited to add much more for our guests with a new line of upscale furniture and accent pieces,” Prescott says. Prescott loves being in Fortville with its friendly people and great places like Main Street. “There are a lot of popular restaurants here where people like to wander around and shop before and after they eat,” Prescott says. “I love that. There is a nice small-town feel to Fortville.” Prescott noted that the store has already been branded as “the buffalo plaid” store. “Red Ranch Shoppes is really a very special part of Fortville’s thriving Main Street,” she says. “It’s wonderful being that little spot that people send their friends and relatives to come and check out. There truly is something for everyone in one location.” Red Ranch Shoppes is located at 214 Main Street in Fortville.
