Owner Allison Rose
FORTVILLE VINTAGE BOUTIQUE IS MAKING YOUR OLD NEW AGAIN Writer / Lynda Hedberg Thies Photos provided by Time and Again and Lynda Hedberg Thies
When Allison Rose was a little girl, her greatest influence was her grandmother who would ship to her what appeared to be junk. She received random pen caps, tennis balls that didn’t bounce, a cassette tape of some musician that she didn’t know. But her grandma was not trying to unload her junk on her, but rather she had lived through the Depression and she saw value in everything. Rose credits her grandmother with her love and appreciation of used items. Rose’s first project was taking discarded and unused pillow cases and turning them into baby and toddler sundresses for her
daughter. The response from friends and family was overwhelmingly positive and requests for her unique dresses began to pour in. For a decade, Rose spent evenings and weekends doing craft shows throughout the Midwest Indiana, Ohio and Illinois, selling her repurposed vintage fabrics to make scarves, handkerchiefs and stuffed animals. She moved into custom gifts that either her clients designed or that she designed that were made of loved ones’ clothing items, blankets and, of course, pillow cases. Her success allowed her the opportunity to wait for just the right location. In December of 2016, she opened a storefront on Main Street in Fortville. Opening her store in Fortville was an easy decision with the significant growth track 8 / GEIST MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2018 / atGeist.com
the town is on. As a Fishers resident, Rose’s drive to Fortville is a quick seven-minute commute to her home near Hamilton Southeastern High School in Fishers and is in close proximity to Geist and Noblesville as well. “Fortville really has great food and fantastic shopping, and I love that our shops all work with each other and plan events such as regular GNO’s,” Rose says. “It is such an exciting time to be part of the growth of this town. “My shop is very much me,” she adds. “It’s a collection of things that make me happy. It’s handmade. It’s vintage. It’s repurposed. It’s fun. It’s quality handmade items I know I would buy for myself and that others would appreciate.”
She has 25 other makers as well as two kid entrepreneurs in the shop. She also offers kits to budding DIYers on their way. “But my favorite thing about my shop is the emotions my work brings out in people and hearing, ‘That’s so cool’ or ‘I had these sheets as a kid’ or ‘I wonder if she’ll make something out of grandpa’s handkerchief, pillowcase or shirt,’” Rose says.
The store is full of the unique gift ideas for teachers, new moms, and those custom one-of-a-kind gifts that are vintage, antique or pre-made. Then there are custom gifts where you can bring in your vintage linens from the fabrics of your love ones and Rose will consult with you about how to make sentimental items to repurpose the material that revives new memories from “old” things that makes her the happiest.
“It’s knowing I am helping to make someone warm and fuzzy inside,” she says. “So whatever you do, don’t throw anything out, just bring it to me.” Time & Again Shop is open Wednesday, 12-4p.m., Thursday 11a.m. - 5p.m., FridaySaturday 10am. -5p.m. and Sunday 12-4p.m. Visit them online at timeandagainshop.com or give them a call at 317-747-0122.

CHEF SUZANNE OPENS DRIVE-THROUGH POP-UP FOOD HUT
Writer & Photographer / Pat Carlini
The popular Fishers & Geist area Chef Suzanne is at it again. Not only has Suzanne Rockwell catered to families, corporations, famous musicians and athletes for several years, she opened her catering facility in Fishers to also offer cooking classes and special events and has now made time for a brand new venture. Chef Suzanne has opened a little drive-through pop-up food hut, called Fresh. Food. Fast. in the parking lot at 8140 Oaklandon Road. “I wanted a storefront, but I didn’t want a storefront,” Rockwell says as she explains the restaurant business is a lot different than the catering business. “This is not dealing with a bar and tables. This is fresh food made at the catering kitchen and brought here to be sold. This is the best of both worlds.” Chef says her clientele for the Fresh. Food. Fast. concept includes parents dropping off kids at nearby schools and churches, workers who want to take lunch to work and busy parents who want to stop and get something to take home for dinner. “Around 3 to 4 p.m. cars start pulling in, and I know its time to get the dinner menu out,” says Rockwell, who also enjoys working at the hut now and then. Customers can choose from iced mocha lattes and all natural juices any time of the day. Breakfast lovers can pick up egg squares ($2.50), along with hash brown nests, yogurt or baked goods that come in bite-size mini loaves for a dollar. There’s also local coffee from Brickhouse. A variety of salads can be purchased for $10 a pound or get an individual shrimp salad over fresh spinach for $9 dollars. Dinner items include ready-to-eat chef-inspired meals such as Bang Bang chicken over rice. Pre-orders are also welcome by calling the hut at 317-544-8822. “Everything is fresh, dated and dropped off early in the morning,” Rockwell says. “You get the same fresh quality as picking up from our catering kitchen. If it doesn’t sell the first day, the price drops on any item the second day.” The Fresh. Food. Fast. drive-through hut is open Monday through Friday 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. You can find the menu and daily specials at chefsuzanne.com and on Facebook. You can also visit Rockwell’s catering kitchen at 9623 Windermere Blvd, Suite C, in Fishers, or give them a call at 317-913-0332.

Owner, Amanda Isom
SALSBERY GARDEN CENTER OWNER TALKS HISTORY, SUCCESS OF MCCORDSVILLE LOCATION Writer / Lynda Hedberg Thies Photographer / Mark Bell
The Salsbery Garden Center in McCordsville is a second generation familyowned labor of love. The well-manicured garden center is located on an acre property on Broadway Street. The property is uniquely designed to pique your senses, inspire your next DIY project or cause you to surrender to the obvious expertise of owner, Amanda Isom. Isom spent her childhood working at the Salsbery Garden Center in Kokomo owned and operated by her parents for 43 years. The 14-acre property has a greenhouse, tree farm, perennials and annuals galore. She learned from a very young age about the process and the intricacies of the business working alongside her parents.
When she left for college she was convinced that she would never work outside again, instead pursuing a degree in design with her eyes set on an airconditioned office with a view. She achieved those goals and yet every weekend found herself returning to Kokomo to help her parents. Eventually, she came to the conclusion that the airconditioned view was not enough and that gardening was her passion. As fate would have it, the current location became available and it just so happened to be a vacant garden center and it happened to be closer to her New Palestine home. Isom opened her doors for business nearly nine years ago and she could not be happier. “I do everything here because I only have one acre,” Isom says. 14 / GEIST MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2018 / atGeist.com
With the property being smaller, she is able to take time to create a more comprehensive approach to the store. “The best part is that I can offer a larger variety of plants, flowers and trees because I don’t have to fill a semi-truck full like a big box store, which would likely be of one species of a plant,” she says. “I can just order from the Kokomo store which saves us time and money because we can go back and forth as needed.” The added bonus for Isom is she knows intimately the experience, quality and love that went into creating these plants and it also means spending time with her family. Combining her love of design and gardening along with her antique business, Isom has created a unique customer experience at
the McCordsville store. She found that many of her customers were unsure what combination of plants and flowers to use so she created a visual example, combining her design training that she knows will inspire them but also help them feel better about what they buy for their home. “Each of our designs tells a story that I hope creates an image in their minds that help them envision what story they want to tell,” she says. Isom also provides landscape design that is especially visual. She will bring the plants she is proposing rather than a plan on paper so that you can actually see how the look will come together. She offers custom window boxes and planters and brings everything to you. It is clearly a source of great joy for Amanda and her services seem to be in strong demand. The Salsbery Garden Center in McCordsville is just a few miles from Fortville, Greenwood, Indianapolis and Geist, becoming somewhat of a regional garden center and drawing clients from as far away as Carmel, Cicero and Indianapolis. “The gift room is very popular because we are open year-round, which many don’t realize,” Isom says. “We do holiday flowers, Christmas planters, wreaths, sprays and have a lot of unique pieces I bring in from my antique business.” For those thinking about fall, they have quite a reputation for the thickness and tightness of their mums because of the extra care Isom's mother Becky spends on them. Whether you are looking for young or mature plants, design services, schedule a design consultation for your entire landscape, custom window boxes and planters, advise or just want to see how amazing these mums can be, you should stop by Salsbery Garden Center at 6346 W. Broadway, McCordsville or call 317335-5550. The store is open year-round Monday-Saturday 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m.-4 p.m. You can also visit them online at salsberygardencenter.com.

HEIDELBERG HAUS OWNER TALKS HISTORY OF INDY’S POPULAR GERMAN CAFE & BAKERY
Writer / Seth Johnson Photographer / Michael Durr
hundreds of miles. They even fly in. It’s just a unique place.”
For half a century, Indy residents have experienced true German culture thanks to the Heidelberg Haus. From kitschy décor to a mouth-watering menu, the German café and bakery has no shortage of character, which is reflective of its charismatic owner Juergen Jungbauer.
Located at 7625 Pendleton Pike, Heidelberg Haus is several operations in one. In addition to being a tasty bakery, it offers a humble food menu, complete with items like a German-style bratwurst and a homemade potato salad. While at Heidelberg Haus, customers can also peruse an array of German gifts or shop for authentic German groceries.
“We are what’s called a destination bakery,” Jungbauer says. “People come from
atGeist.com / AUGUST 2018 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 17
Born in Germany, Jungbauer learned how to make pastries between the ages of 14 and 17. As one thing led to the next, he eventually wound up in the U.S., where he would be drafted by the Army and stationed at Fort Harrison in Indianapolis. While in the Army, he was granted the opportunity to show off his pastry-making skills. “The Army said they wanted nationwide publicity for me, so they wrote me up in Army Times, Navy Times and Air Force Times,” Jungbauer says. “They made me a
poster child. They shipped me anywhere I needed to go. If they needed a pastry in Washington for the White House, I would fly there.” Already with roots in the Indy area because of his time at Fort Harrison, Jungbauer decided to start his own German café on Pendleton Pike in 1968. “I started in ’68 and was all by myself,” Jungbauer says. “I had no family here until I married in ’72, and then I started my own family.” Since its start, Heidelberg Haus has expanded three times, while making other minor updates here and there. However, Jungbauer admits little has changed over the course of 50 years. “We have one or two items on the menu [that are different],” Jungbauer says. “I’ve always said I don’t want to be a German restaurant. I want to be a German café, where we have a little something to eat. That’s basically served me well all of these years.” Inside the Heidelberg Haus, Jungbauer has also assembled a bakery museum, where visitors will find clippings of the press he’s received over the years. “I’ve collected things since I was 14,” he says. “There was a bakery in Miamisburg, Ohio. I took all the bricks and everything apart and rebuilt it over there.” Although he could probably add more seating in Heidelberg Haus if he decided to remove the museum, Jungbauer chooses to let it be, giving his business even more character. “Everybody says, ‘Take that down and make more seats,’” he says. “I don’t want to make more seats. We only have about 27 seats. For a restaurant, that’s not enough to sustain yourself. But that’s the way we like it.” In this same spirit, Jungbauer keeps things kitsch in the Heidelberg Haus interior. “It’s gaudy,” he says of his business’ décor. “Nothing is supposed to be organized here. Nothing is supposed to sit in a row. In Germany, the German magazines call me the most unique German store in America.”
As one might expect, word of the Heidelberg Haus has spread from coast to coast over the years. “A couple weeks ago, they had a mayors conference downtown,” Jungbauer says. “A guy called up, and he said, ‘Do you know you cost me $60? My wife said to not come home without bringing her something from the Heidelberg.’ He was a mayor from somewhere in Vermont.” But whether they’re coming from near or far, Jungbauer appreciates the support from his dedicated clientele all the same. “It’s our 50th anniversary — that is a long time for a bakery,” he says. “It’s just fun. We love the customers.” Heidelberg Haus is located at 7625 Pendleton Pike, or you can give them a call at 317-547-1230.

First-time visitors to Da Blue Lagoon, 11705 Pendleton Pike, in the Oaklandon Plaza, are so impressed with the restaurant’s scrumptious Jamaican cuisine, they plan their return trip immediately. “The (community) response to the food has been great,” says Graham Levy, owner of Da Blue Lagoon, which opened August 2017. “It is especially nice to hear feedback from folks that have not tried Jamaican food before. It’s like having some of the
Caribbean beach paradise in Indianapolis.”
Levy noted that the restaurant’s name comes from Portland Jamaica and the home of a beautiful body of water known as The Blue Lagoon. “Customers already have their favorites,” Levy says. “They enjoy the Oxtail Stew (bite-sized cuts of ox beef tails), Jerk Chicken and the Curry Goat. Jerk Chicken is one of the many iconic dishes of the area, and is very well known in the Caribbean.” Levy has been pleased with the way 20 / GEIST MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2018 / atGeist.com
Lawrence and McCordsville area residents have embraced the restaurant. “They are excited to have an authentic, ethnic offering adding variety to the neighborhood,” he says. “I am excited to share this part of my adopted community.” Levy’s personal favorites are The Montego Bay Sampler and Ocho Rios Double (Oxtail/Curry Goat & Fried plantains). “Our meals are typically served with rice and beans and a choice of one additional side (butter steamed veggies, special recipe
mac & cheese, island fries, fried plantains),” Levy says. Da Blue Lagoon also serves Fried Snapper (whole or filet), Port Royal Fried chicken, Coconut Curry Chicken and Jamaican Beef Patties. Other favorites include The Escovitch Fish. It’s a fish (fillet or whole) island herb rubbed, then fried and smothered with a flavorful,
spiced, tangy, pickled vegetable sauce with onions, carrots, scotch bonnet peppers and pimento and The Smoked Jerk Salmon. Levy added that their Breakfast and Brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. has also grown in popularity. Entrees include Ackee & Codfish, the Jamaican national dish, sautéed with Jamaican herbs and spices and served with
Johnny Cakes and a side of plantains or sliced avocados and Jerk Pork Hash. Levy says he works closely with the staff to ensure freshness with every meal. “We make everything from scratch, and make sure that it really tastes like an authentic Caribbean meal,” Levy says. “We have an outstanding staff that makes sure everyone has a great time.”

Levy noted that Da Blue Lagoon has grown a lot in the last 13 years.
“We began in 2005 in Broad Ripple, while I still worked a traditional 9 to 5 job,” Levy says. “We were there until 2010. We went to the mobile (food truck) option in 2013, due to a need for flexibility for family commitment reasons. In 2015, with the support of my wife and family, I left my job and decided to give my full attention to this venture and expanded back into the brick and mortar venue.” Levy says the decision has paid off. Many people that were faithful followers of his food truck have eagerly visited Da Blue Lagoon restaurant. He says his guests also enjoy Da Blue Lagoon’s drink selections as much as the food menu. “We offer a variety of beers, including Jamaican Red Stripe, Heineken, Yuengling, a Rum punch and a secret concoction we call Da Bob Marley,” Levy says. “We also offer Pepsi products, flavored lemonades and a couple of wine options.” Jamaican sodas, homemade fruit beverages and Island Breeze cocktails are also served. “We will have outdoor seating during the summer months and continue to operate the food truck in and around Indy with a revamped summer schedule, predominantly for shows and events such as the First Friday Food Truck Festival, Fridays on Georgia Street, and we also offer catering and private events.” Da Blue Lagoon Jamaican Kitchen is located at 11705 Pendleton Pike. IN THE ZONE LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP FOOTBALL LEAGUE BUILDS CHARACTER, TEACHES LIFE LESSONS FOR LOCAL YOUTH Writer / Benjamin Lashar Photos Provided by Lawrence Township Football League
Nobody in their right mind would expect children to play football as skillfully as NFL players, but to many like Virgil Aldridge, a youth football game can be even more exciting than a professional one. To Aldridge, children learning lifelong lessons on the football field has more pull than the NFL. As the president of the Lawrence Township Football League, Aldridge appreciates the benefits youth football has on children and the overall community. Lawrence Township Football League is a recreational youth league that serves as
many children’s introduction to football. From late July to early October, players in LTFL play safe but demanding games of football against other teams in the league. Practices start as regular exercises and become more specialized until the kids compete in football games. Some of the best players and coaches go on to form All-Star teams. These teams compete against other Central Indiana leagues in competitions like Border Wars and Indy Crossroads. While the football players are all boys, girls can still learn team-building and get serious exercise through the LTFL’s cheerleading program. The league does not only help with kids’ 24 / GEIST MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2018 / atGeist.com
physical health, but it also teaches them lifelong skills “If you show dedication and work very hard, you will improve,” Aldridge says. “Whether you go from a two to a six or from a five to a 10, you’re going to improve.” Players might not win every game or even go on to play in high school, but each one will learn lessons about hard work and improvement that will last them the rest of their lives. Aldridge credits LTFL’s success to the league’s wonderful legion of volunteers. From board members to concession
workers, there are nearly 100 people working with the league. All of them, with the exception of the high school certified officials, are unpaid volunteers. Even coaches, who are tasked with taking care of 15 kids three times a week, are unpaid volunteers.
BUILDING WEALTH. One personalized portfolio at a time.
The character building and great staff have allowed Lawrence Township Football League to stay strong at a time where youth sports are on the decline, but the league also succeeds because of its ties to the community. The football programs of Lawrence North High School and Lawrence Central High School share resources and personnel with LTFL. These two high schools even feature an LTFL match, doing their much-anticipated annual football match against each other. In addition, many local organizations like the Glick Company and Community Health Services sponsor LTFL, leading to players often featuring the brand’s logos. In the future, Aldridge wants to pursue even greater community involvement. The league hopes to both become more involved with local schools and encourage more community members to get involved. LTFL is constantly looking for volunteers to help with anything from coaching to concessions to social media. The hope is that through getting more people involved, Lawrence Township Football League can “engender sort of a community feel” among the township, as Aldridge puts it. WELCOME IN MT. VERNON HIGH SCHOOL INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE PROGRAM SEEKING HOST FAMILIES Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided
Hosting a foreign exchange student can open up a world of possibilities. It gives students a wide range of new ways to learn more about another country’s language, culture and communities. It also helps students develop life-long friendships and possible future job opportunities. At Mt. Vernon High School, the school’s International Exchange Program has been helping students both at home and abroad. “The program offers our high school students the opportunity to interact and become friends with students from all over the world,” says Jennifer Roland, a Social Studies teacher at Mt. Vernon High School and the placement coordinator for the school’s International Exchange Program. For the 2018-19 school year, Roland noted that there are 11 kids coming to Mt. Vernon
High School, seven of which chose Mt. Vernon as their school of choice out of every other high school in the U.S.
of our Bridge program this year, we now have foreign exchange students who have specifically chosen Mt. Vernon.”
“I think that’s a testimony to all the great things Mt. Vernon is doing,” Roland says. “These seven kids, depending on their age, will graduate with a Mt. Vernon diploma. This program will also allow our students the opportunity to visit some of our sister schools that we are working hard to build relationships with, so not only are we bringing a cultural experience to the classroom and community, but we’re also working on expanding beyond the classroom.”
Roland says that plans for the program this year are pretty simple.
Roland adds that the Mt. Vernon Internationals Exchange Program is really in its infancy, and expanding the program takes time.
This year, Mt. Vernon High School has students from Spain, Germany, Vietnam, China and Switzerland, to name a few.
“I think the biggest piece of growth is that a typical one-year foreign exchange student gets placed wherever luck draws them,” Roland says. “With the expansion 26 / GEIST MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2018 / atGeist.com
“We really want to grow our program,” Roland says. “I think the best way for us to do that is to build relationships with our current host families by being a great resource for them in whatever capacity they need. We have many people in our community who I think are interested in potentially hosting but want to see it in practice before they dip their toe in the pool.”
Roland stressed that she enjoys seeing the foreign exchange students every day. “We get to see these kiddos and check in on them,” Roland says. “We also each
live no more than 20 minutes away from our (host) families but most of them are much closer. When you talk about the purposeful placements, our involvement in the school as teachers, as well as our proximity, I think it demonstrates the care and genuine desire for each family to have a successful year with their student.” Roland believes the program is invaluable to not just the school’s culture but the school’s social studies classes as well. “I had a visiting student from Germany, and when we gave him a day to talk about Germany, and the differences between Germany and the U.S., my kids learned so much,” Roland says. “We had honest conversations about patriotism and the shape of the world post World War II.”

GROWING VEGETABLES IN INDIANA GARDENS Writer / Carrie Petty
Momma knew what she was talking about when she told us to eat our veggies! Growing your own vegetables can be equally as beneficial. It is not nearly as hard as we make it, and it is so rewarding come harvest time. Spring rains have given way to flourishing foliage in the summer garden. The crops of early spring are now past their prime. Veggies like spinach, cilantro, peas, beets and more are all considered ‘cold crops’ and love the coolness of early spring soil. Now
we are really cooking with Crisco, because summer, warm-season crops are the bulk of what vegetable gardening is all about. Warm season growers are the primetime players in the Indiana vegetable garden. These will be able to thrive in your garden until late September. So let’s get planting. Beans, tomatoes, melon, eggplant and corn, just to name a few. Do not forget to plant peppers of all kinds and BASIL, BASIL and more BASIL! Success in the veggie garden comes from two main components — eight hours of 30 / GEIST MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2018 / atGeist.com
sunshine and great organic soil. I grow my veggies in the front yard of our suburban home out by Geist and use what is called a natural raised bed. This is where you dig the soil from left to right to make a long mounding row of dirt in which you plant your crops into. I have not built a wooden raised bed, but if you do choose to do so make sure you do not use treated wood. I feel this seeps into the soil. Your soil should be healthy and well nourished with compost and have great drainage. I love mushroom compost for my edibles. The vegetables take up what is in the soil
and we consume its contents. This is why the other two most important things, for consumption purposes, to remember are never use soil with any enhancements like ‘moisture control’ or ‘fertilizer pellets’ and always choose organic soil to put in the garden. Also, keep grass fertilizer and herbicides away from the edge of any garden from which you will eat what you grow. Not good. Also, I like to remind folks really stretch before you get out there and work. I had a very serious back injury this spring and could not continue cutting in my new bed or mulching. Big shout out to Property Pros who came to help me. Josh Springer, CEO and all around good dude, had his crew out to my gardens and helped me so much. You can reach them at 317436-8529. No room for a big farm garden? No worries. All crops do very well in containers. As long as those patio pots get eight hours of sun you are good to go. Lettuce does great on the deck, so do cherry tomatoes and herbs. Try some container gardens this summer too and see which method you like best. Every growing season I pick one thing that I have never grown, this helps me ‘grow’ as a gardener. This year’s unknown in my garden is going to be Pumpkin! Yes, I know, you would think when the children were younger we would have already tried this happy little gourd. But I must have been too busy working and mothering. I have always been so
intimidated to grow them, so this summer I am facing my fears. Gardening should not be intimidating as a hobby. Start small and grow each year. Mulch your veggies and keep them well watered twice a week. Don't water the foliage, this creates disease, so water around the base carefully so not to splash soil up onto the foliage. More disease. Keep weeding, this keeps moisture thieves away from the root systems of our veggies. Weeds are notorious criminals when it comes to

stealing water. And finally, for those pesky critters, you know I love a product called Shake Away. It is coyote pellets of urine (sorry, gross I know!) but it works so well if applied properly. Read all labels. You don’t want to guess on any type of applications. Get going with your growing. And as always, I hope this has helped contribute to teaching you all, “How to Grow a More Beautiful Life!”

Writer / Lynda Hedberg Thies Photos Provided by Cathedral High School
Cathedral High School is celebrating its centennial anniversary this year, marking a century of education encompassing spiritual, emotional and physical growth with a diverse population of students. As the oldest Catholic high school in Central Indiana, Cathedral has a rich and colorful history that had its share of challenges from the start, but along the way, they have persevered and are poised for continued success. Before there was a Cathedral High School, the only Cathedral that existed was the Cathedral Grade School, located at 14th and Pennsylvania. Bishop Joseph Chartrand decided he wanted to open an all-Catholic boy’s high school in central Indianapolis. Bishop Chartrand called upon the Brothers of Holy Cross, who were a teaching order at the time, and shared his vision for a new allboys Catholic High School.
Cathedral High School was owned by the Indianapolis Diocese but the Holy Cross Brothers of Notre Dame were brought in to serve as faculty. The Brothers were also faculty to many schools and colleges around the country, including Notre Dame. On the morning of Friday, September 13, 1918, 19 freshmen and sophomore students were greeted by Bishop Chartrand and four Brothers of Holy Cross. Eleven seniors were the first to graduate in 1921. Cathedral’s connection to Notre Dame was well documented in those early years and, as it turns out, Cathedral had more in common with the university than just sharing the same Holy Cross instructors.
of Cathedral reads like a Dublin (Ireland) phonebook with names like Kelly, Clancy and McCarthy.” The article was published October 21, 1921, and was the first reference to Cathedral as the “Fighting Irish” or “The Irish.”
Legendary Knute Rockne came down to Cathedral High School to participate in an event at the school. He was impressed by the kids at Cathedral, and when he returned to Notre Dame, he was quoted saying, “We are finished being the Ramblers because we have spread the good name of Notre Dame across the country. We are going to take a lesson from our little brothers (Brothers of the Holy Cross) down at Cathedral, and we will be the Notre Dame Fighting Irish From Cathedral earned their nickname from Bill Fox, then a sports writer for the Indianapolis this point forward.” News. Fox was on assignment covering Eventually, Notre Dame hired an artist the football game between Cathedral and out of Chicago to create a rendering of Indianapolis Manual High School. speaks to the character of the staff, teachers, alumni and students of the school. Cathedral has a long tradition of family, community and creating not just good students but good people. Lifelong Connections is not just a motto, it is a way of life at Cathedral.
With enrollment overflowing, the Diocese decided to build an east side school —Scecina Memorial was built in the 1960’s, with Bishop Chatard following shortly thereafter. Eventually, Cardinal Ritter was built on the west side. But during that time, the Diocese gave control of Cathedral to the Holy Cross Brothers and the school, where they remained until 1972. When families began moving to the suburbs, enrollment began declining. As a result, the Holy Cross Brothers made the decision to close the school.
In the 1920’s, the school brought in students from the Indianapolis area, today Cathedral students come from Marion County and nine other Central Indiana counties. Students attended approximately 130 different schools before entering Cathedral. The Traditions of the Fighting Irish remain a high priority as well as continued growth and expansion for the future.
A group of parents, alumni and friends rescued Cathedral by forming a non-profit organization to take over the school. Robert V. Welch, a 1945 Cathedral alumnus and prominent real estate developer, organized the Cathedral Trustees, Inc. and for the next 15 years served as its Board Chairman. In 1976, the Cathedral Trustees moved their school to the former site of Ladywood School (56th St. and Emerson Way), which had itself just been closed by the Sisters of Providence. The risks were huge and the changes were significant for Cathedral, but the opportunity for growth in the suburbs was too great to pass up. The move did not solve their financial needs because now the school was 100 percent responsible for funding. Sometimes that meant setting up a bingo night at the school just to pay the bills, and sometimes it meant the trustees wrote personal checks to cover them. Cathedral is the only school that never closed after opening and that perseverance is still alive and well today. The school has weathered the Great Depression, multiple wars and the economic downturn in 2008. This
In the past century, Cathedral High school has educated some of Indianapolis’ most successful residents, including prominent businessmen and businesswomen, entrepreneurs, police and fire chiefs, scientists, sculptors, doctors, lawyers, politicians and professional athletes. Cathedral remains committed to the values of the Holy Cross Brothers. There will be a three-day Centennial Celebration that will start with a mass at SS Peter & Paul Cathedral on September 13th, with five more events over three days. For more information about the Centennial Celebration Events, Cathedral families and alumni can get full details at gocathedral. com/100. Everyone is encouraged to be part of the celebration. “We are extremely excited about our Centennial Anniversary,” says Cathedral Principal Dave Worland. “Our anniversary gives us a chance to reflect back on our achievements in academics, the arts and athletics. As the only Holy Cross high school in Indiana, our anniversary also gives us a chance to give thanks for all the blessings God has bestowed on our beloved school. We hope the community will join us in celebrating this milestone for Cathedral and continue to pray for our school as she embarks on her next 100 years." atGeist.com / AUGUST 2018 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 33
MOZZI’S PIZZA REMAINS A FORTVILLE FAVORITE 30 YEARS LATER Writer / Matt Keating Photographer / Josh Brown

If you are relaxing and eating in the restaurant or getting a pizza to go during another hectic day at work or with the family, Clifton and his busy staff are ready to have your dinner ready. He says he is glad Mozzi’s has earned a positive reputation in the Fortville community.

The most popular pizzas at Mozzi’s are the traditional cheese and pepperoni.
“Mozzi’s Classic is a staple with the classic combination of pepperoni, sausage and fresh veggies,” Clifton says. “The Nacho Pizza is a favorite, layered with nacho cheese, Mozzarella cheese, ground beef, onions and even more Mozzarella cheese.” Some customers kick it up a notch by adding jalapeños. “Mozzi’s Meaty Pizza is for meat lovers. It's piled high with pepperoni, sausage, Italian sausage, ham and ground beef,” Clifton says. Mozzi’s bread sticks are a big hit with customers too. “Whether you are a fan of the traditional or the creative, Mozzi's offers the bread sticks for you,” he says. “We serve six different kinds. Our traditional bread sticks are soft and fluffy on the inside. Our Garlic Parmesan Bread Sticks are brushed with garlic and sprinkled with Parmesan cheese. The Pepperoni Bread Sticks are twisted with pepperoni.” Mozzi’s also has Deluxe Bread Sticks with their traditional bread sticks, covered in Mozzarella cheese, and sprinkled with Parmesan. Clifton’s favorite pizza at Mozzi's is a special creation not found on the menu. “At our house, we call it the ‘Henry Special,’ named after my youngest son,” he says. “It’s a Nacho cheese-based pizza with Mozzarella cheese, pepperoni and bacon. Our Nacho cheese is really the best around, and it makes this unique pizza especially delicious.”
LOYAL CUSTOMERS
Clifton can't say enough about the loyalty of his customers and the community of Fortville. “We have several long-time supporters of Mozzi's,” he says. “We have seen many of their children grow up, get married and now become customers themselves.” Many of the customers come in to chat and also write Facebook and Yelp reviews.

The town of Fortville recently helped Mozzi’s with a growing customer parking concern. With new businesses moving into Fortville, parking availability became an issue.

Joshua King and his grandmother Kristeen Walker.
MCCORDSVILLE BOY USES CELLPHONE 911 SERVICE TO SAVE GRANDMOTHER Writer / Lynda Hedberg Thies Photography Provided
Three minutes. Just three minutes changed Joshua King’s life forever. But it could have been a very different three minutes if his grandmother Kristeen Walker had not spent the previous three months practicing with Joshua what to do in case of an emergency. And the outcome might have been very different if Kristeen, a McCordsville resident, had not taken a few minutes out of her life to sign up for Smart 911. Kristeen loves having Joshua live with her. The two spend evenings swimming at the neighborhood pool, they play games and Joshua loves running errands with his grandma. On the evening of May 1, Kristeen and Joshua had just returned from the hardware store from picking up 25, 50-pound bags of mulch. “When I set the last bag down, I remember
feeling funny, so I went to sit down inside my truck. I immediately knew I was in trouble and I called out to Joshua for help,” Kristeen says. Joshua ran to his grandmother and called her name, but she did not answer. Thankfully, Kristeen had recently signed up for the Smart 911 system and “just in case” they practiced the steps he would need to take in the event something happened to her. Joshua’s training kicked in and he dialed 911. Dispatcher Greg Duda answered the call and heard Joshua’s voice exclaim, “My grandma’s dead and I am the only one here.” Because of the Smart 911 System, Duda was able to have important details about Kristeen and speak quickly to Joshua by name and help him find the address on his mailbox. From the time the call started until help was dispatched, it was only three minutes until McCordsville Police officers arrived on the scene. Kristeen was unconscious but still breathing and within atGeist.com / AUGUST 2018 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 37
minutes was on her way to the hospital. Within 24 hours, Kristeen was released from the hospital to care for Joshua. Hancock County is the only county in the state of Indiana to have this system in place. When you do a Google search for Smart 911, there is a link for “Smart 911 Availability” which shows that the only option is Hancock County. Lucky for Kristeen and Joshua, but perhaps a bit surprising that it is not available anywhere else in the state. There is a link to request this program in your zip code. There are three options, 1) to create your safety profile, 2) to click on a link to let Smart 911 know that you would like to bring this program to your area and 3) to click on a link to find out how you can encourage your community to get Smart 911 and sign up for an email list. One 7-year old hero and his grandmother
that will be forever grateful that they live in a county that offers this program. John Hokantas, 911 Director, recognized Joshua at the County Commissioner’s Office. “This story is why we got it. This story is the story that tells us the system works,” he says. “Without a doubt, Joshua is my hero,” Kristeen beams tearfully. Joshua is just grateful to have spent the summer running around with his grandma at his side, swimming, reading books, laughing and more. The county reports that only 10 percent or 3,500 households in Hancock County have signed up for the program. So please take a moment to visit smart911.com and fill out a profile regardless of whether you live in Hancock County. Share this story and encourage everyone you know in Indiana to request the program. Three minutes could be a matter of life and death for you and your family.

With the first day of school lingering in the not-so-distant future, you're probably feeling both excited and overwhelmed. From creating healthy sleep habits and establishing a good morning routine to handling back-to-school anxiety and learning how to make communication more manageable, we’ve got 10 back to school tips and tricks for parents to help make this your best year yet! 1. MAKE A COUNTDOWN Using a calendar, paper chain or whiteboard, start a countdown a couple weeks before school. With this countdown ease into their school routine with bedtime, setting out their clothes for the next day and when they'll be waking up. It'll be hard to stick
to those routines while wanting to get in as much fun as you can, but it will help the transition immensely for you and your kids if you start early. 2. POSITIVE ATTITUDE You know that your child will reap the benefits of going to school. Try to keep any anxiety or stress you may have from showing to your child. 3. VISIT THE SCHOOL This is a great practice for young kids starting preschool or Kindergarten. It is equally great for children entering a new school. Map out their classes and let them try out their locker. Park where they will park and walk in, making their first day of school more familiar.
4. MORNING ROUTINE Routine is the key word here. It may take a few weeks or even months to figure out the perfect routine for your family, but once you've got it, stick with it. Write it out or discuss it with your kids to let them know how you'd like to see the morning go. Have them help you figure out what works best for them. 5. EVENING ROUTINE Although morning routines help with the ease into a new day, setting up an evening routine can make that morning routine breeze by. Again, see what works best for your family. Maybe make a chart or an evening routine clock that shows what things they need to accomplish before lights out. Do as much as you can the night
before so the next morning is simple (set out clothes, make lunches, look at the week ahead etc.)
sure they know it's their space and their responsibility to keep their items there. 8. MAKE A CALENDAR
6. GO SCHOOL SHOPPING Head to the store for their favorite foods in their packed lunch. Purchase the necessary school supplies or even a new First Day outfit. Get haircuts. Having a day with them to prepare for the new year ahead will let your kids know you want to make this as easy and as fun as possible for them. 7. MAKE A DROP ZONE Talk to your child about homework rules and where they should put papers that need to be looked at or signed. Have enough space for each child's backpack, shoes, water bottles or anything else they will be carrying home from school so there is no frustration in the morning to find these items. Make
Add all of the holidays and school info and hang it where your child can see it. If they join a club or sport, have them write in their games or practice dates and times to let them have a little responsibility over knowing when their time is scheduled. If you have a younger child, use stickers to let them know which days they have games or practices. Starting this habit of letting them schedule their time will help them decide what is too much on their plate. 9. BE PRESENT As tempting as it is to tell our kids they have nothing to worry about as a way to distract them, sometimes the best thing we can do as parents is to simply listen. If your child is finding school stressful, allow him or her
to put their feelings into words so you can figure out exactly what is bothering them and (hopefully) find a solution to their worries. Spend 5 to 10 minutes connecting with each child in the morning or evening routine, with your phone put away. Talk about who they're excited to see or what they're going to do at recess. If they are nervous for the week ahead, brainstorm a family activity for the weekend. 10. OUTSOURCE YOUR TIME Know that it's okay to ask for help. Figure out what is taking up a lot of your time, therefore, keeping you from your family. Is there a way to pay to have it done by someone else? Hire a cleaning service, utilize grocery pick up or delivery, make crock-pot meals, carpool with other parents for practices. There are many ways to simplify if you are able to step back and see what needs to be adjusted.

Families of the Boy Scouts of America have been asking for years to welcome daughters into the program that they have seen change their son’s lives.
This fall, families can now sign up their sons and daughters for Cub Scouting In October of 2017, the Boy Scouts of America Board of Directors unanimously approved to welcome girls into its iconic Cub Scout program and to deliver a Scouting program for older girls that will enable them to advance and earn the highest rank of Eagle Scout. The historic decision comes after years of receiving requests from families that they want to participate together. The BSA evaluated the results of numerous research efforts, gaining input from current members and leaders, as well as parents and girls who’ve never been involved in Scouting. This research confirmed that the curriculum is applicable to both girls and boys, and offers families an additional choice in meeting the character development needs of all their children. Cub Scouts and the Boy Scouts of America have created a unique model that builds on the benefits of single gender programs while providing the same character and leadership opportunities for both boys and girls. Cub Scout dens will be single gender, all boys or all girls, not co-ed.
NOW IS THE
TIME!
Using the same respected Scouting curriculum, all youth will be able to earn the belt loops, merit badges, and even Eagle Scout rank. This unique approach allows the organization to maintain the integrity of the single-gender model while also meeting the needs of today’s busy families, with all of the same character building, outdoor activities and service Scouts are known for in the community! Our mission is still the same—to prepare every young person to become a strong, brave, loyal, kind and responsible citizen. The values of the Scout Law – trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent – are relevant and important for every boy and girl.
For more information about Cub Scouting or to register, visit
www.JoinScoutsIN.org The Scouting curriculum is staying exactly the same
Cub Scouting in single gender dens is now available for boys and girls Starting in 2019, girls will be able to earn the same merit badges as boys have for over 100 years, even Eagle Scout rank

Chef Seiji Bryant, Rainbow Station I was walking through my local Kroger shopping for the school, and I ran into a student’s parent. This happens frequently as a chef because I am at a grocery store every day. She wanted to know what to feed her picky eater. I often hear parents tell me that their children used to be picky eaters but now they are not. At LeafSpring, I feed the kids a lot of different types of food. Growing up in Japan, vegetables and foods most Americans might find unusual, are everyday foods for me. I love giving the kids the experiences I have had all over the world. I mix in recipes I would even prepare at the high-end restaurants. Each week during the summer, LeafSpring has a theme. For Hawaiian Week, I made “Luau” Pork, from scratch, wrapped in banana leaves. It had to start cooking and smoking the day before to get the soft pull apart texture along with that wonderful scent and sweetness from the banana leaves. Not only do we as adults like our BBQ that way, but the kids want the softer textures too. The aroma permeated the entire school. The kids just gobbled it up. These are kids that I am told often won’t eat meat at home. There’s nothing like hearing parents ask if they can come in and eat too.
grocery store and cook partially covered at 200°F for 10-12 hours. We had a routine state inspection this past week and the state representative told me that no other school nearby is making food from scratch for the kids like we do. I even alter the menu to coincide with the curriculum so apples go with Johnny Appleseed and so forth. She also asked me to make a cookbook for the parents. She asked what I had made that day – “Swamp Chili” (White Chicken Chili). I showed her the zucchini and jalapeños in the chili, that are grown in the school garden, and how I chopped them up to look like little alligators in the swamp to make eating vegetables more fun. The kids were excited to eat the little gators. QUICK TIP – Blend fresh vegetables into soups, sauces, stews, for kids who are afraid of textures. Carrots, peppers, zucchini and spinach are blended into my chili and spaghetti.
The children and their parents win with scratch-made foods. Many of the students come here because of certain minor dietary restrictions that most schools find too much of a hassle to make it possible to enroll those students. Packaged frozen foods often contain gluten, peanut oil, dairy and other allergens. We are peanut free. Some students are diabetic and some are vegetarian. We always have real food options. Make sure you visit our wellness center to chat with the nurses too. Even when your children are ill, we can take care of them so you can go to work knowing they will be well cared for. If you want your children to eat better, healthier, more delicious food, please come take a tour through LeafSpring. Come see me outside of a lunch rush to see our menus, farm-to-table foods and our alternative options for those with dietary concerns. You can even check out what I am making on Instagram by searching for #myschooleatsbetterthanyou and #ChefSeiji
