2nd Annual KassieKares Sip. Bark! Repeat. Returns August 18 at Daniel’s Vineyard Writer / Rachel Quade Photography Provided

If you miss being able to spend a relaxing day sipping wine among the beauty at Daniel’s Vineyard, there is a special day coming up just for you. On Sunday, August 18, Daniel’s Vineyard will be hosting its 2nd Annual KassieKares Sip. Bark! Repeat. event. Guests are welcome to bring their favorite four-legged or two-legged friends to the vineyard on this day. You can stroll around the vineyard, enjoy live music, check out the silent and live auctions, grab something to eat at the food trucks and visit the kids’ activities area. A few of the live auction items include vacation packages, a Halo pendant from Diamond’s Direct and a Labradoodle from American Labradoodles. You will also have the opportunity to adopt dogs at the event. It will make for a great day, and you’ll be contributing to a worthwhile cause. The day will be benefitting KassieKares. This organization was named for Kassie

Braun, a local 20-year-old girl who tragically died while studying abroad in 2017. She graduated from Cathedral High School and was attending St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas. Kassie worked with children in Third World countries so she could bring her experiences home to help broaden perspectives and encourage others to help less fortunate children across the globe. “Kassie’s strong desire to help others can live on beyond her short life,” says her mother, Chalene Braun. “She wanted to make a difference and with the help of others she will.” Last year’s event at Daniel’s Vineyard was a huge success. More than 2,500 people came out on a beautiful, sunny day and more than $70,000 was raised. This money helped fund two scholarships to Kassie’s alma mater, Cathedral High School, and a study abroad scholarship to St. Edward’s University. This year KassieKares began to support Father JohnBosco Ikemeh and African Education Outreach for the construction atGeist.com / AUGUST 2019 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 7

of the Kassie Braun Memorial Schools (KMBS) in the village of Abakaliki, Nigeria. KassieKares is committed to raising $3.5M over time to fully fund the school. To date, the first set of classroom blocks are well under construction, a perimeter security wall has been completed around the 10-plus acre site and a new bore well provides clean drinking water for the community. KMBS is scheduled to open Fall 2019. It will provide a safe and secure environment for local children in the village, placing them in the classroom and away from street hawking, empowering their future by providing the opportunity for an excellent education. Tickets are $15 at the door, or you can go to their website at KassieKares.org to buy your pre-sale tickets for $10. The ticket allows you entrance to the event with one leashed dog. Ages 5 and under are free. If you can’t be at the event but would still like to donate, you can visit the website and contribute. So whether you want to give to the cause or spend the day with your friends and pets, or you just want to sip some fabulous wine, don’t miss Sip. Bark! Repeat. on Sunday, August 18.

IU & BISHOP CHATARD ALUM TAYLOR WAYER TALKS GOALS & EXCITEMENT AS NEW BOYS BASKETBALL HEAD COACH Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Michael Durr

Bishop Chatard High School’s varsity boys basketball squad has several reasons to be confident heading into the coming season. Not only do the Trojans have two of last season’s top three scorers back in incoming seniors Edreece Redmond and Sam Richey, but new head coach Taylor Wayer is bringing renewed optimism and a fresh perspective into the mix. “I feel like we have a lot of potential to be

contenders every single game,” says Wayer, whose family moved to Indiana when he was two years old and who played multiple sports while growing up in northeast Indianapolis. “We’ve never had a ton of size, but our players are always tough and I’m going to be working hard to make sure the effort is there from every one of our players to compete in such a tough conference.” A 2010 Bishop Chatard alum, Wayer played at Indiana University where he lettered for four years as a walk-on guard under thenhead coach Tom Crean and was a member of the 2013 Big Ten championship team. atGeist.com / AUGUST 2019 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 9

The 5’11” Wayer says practicing regularly with standouts like Victor Oladipo and Cody Zeller, both current NBA players, prepared him for future coaching roles. “Going from being a contributor for two or three years in high school to not playing in games in most cases in college, it was a blessing in disguise because I really got to spend four years as more of a coach than a player,” he says. “I was always studying the other teams, and I was always very vocal on the bench and in the locker room, providing a spark without being in the game. It was probably the best thing that could’ve

happened for my coaching.” Within a few months after graduating from IU in 2014, Wayer knew he wanted to stay involved with the game of basketball and eventually took an assistant coaching position at Mount Vernon High School where his younger brother Miles was a senior at the time. He also began building out a player development program called Competitive Greatness, with help from Miles and Erik Fromm, who played on Butler University’s 2011 national runnerup team. “We’ve been able to help a lot of young kids with the development program,” Wayer says, adding that the Competitive Greatness system focuses on fundamentals such as ball handling, footwork and shooting in addition to strength training and agility. In addition to Mount Vernon, Wayer also served as an assistant for the BCHS varsity team under Brian Shaughnessy, who spent

six seasons as the Trojans’ head coach. Throughout 2018, Wayer decided to focus exclusively on his player development program and further prepare himself for a head coaching opportunity and earlier this year that opportunity came knocking. “With Bishop Chatard being my alma mater, I talked to the athletic director and the president about having an interest in the position when the head coach made the announcement that there would be an opening,” Wayer says. “I have a great relationship with a lot of people at Chatard — coaches, staff members and teachers as well as players I’ve trained before through my training program who are now playing here.”

LOOKING FOR AFFORDABLE DENTAL CARE FROM PEOPLE YOU CAN TRUST?

Wayer says his excitement upon officially getting the news that he’d be leading the Trojans was quickly followed by a realization of the sizable workload that lays ahead of him. The Trojans have not won a sectional championship in 15 years and last year notched its first winning record since the 2011-2012 season. “I want to get the program back to where we’re competing against everyone,” he says. “I have some players who’ve trained with me before but some haven’t so there are adjustments to be made as far as getting everyone used to my system. There’s a lot of work to do.” With several senior leaders including Redmond and Richey, as well as a crop of juniors with varsity experience, Wayer is optimistic and says his current focus is on building camaraderie and teammindedness. “I have a ton of basketball stuff that I want to work on, with things we did at IU and other stuff I’ve learned, but I’m not even going to touch that stuff until I think the energy and the effort is where it needs to be,” he says. “So far the focus has been on things like communication on defense and never giving up on the play. I think we can be really strong this season. The guys are showing signs of that.”

Helping Pet Lovers improve the nutrition & wellness of their pets!

Does buying your pets food make you feel like this? Christopher P. - Staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. Clean and fully stocked store. I drive almost 30 min out of my way cuz this is the best pet store in Indy.

Rebecca C. - Everyone here is super amazing. They always greet you and ask if you need any help. And if you do ask a question they try their very best to answer honestly and offer other suggestions that may not have been thought of. I could easily go and buy my pet’s food at the grocery store but I make it a point to go here because they are the best.

Vicki M. - Knowledgeable Caring Staff and Great Service. My dogs needed a dog food that was more compatible with their stomach issues. Our vet recommended Fromm and Paws Stop has a great selection. I love the fact that they carry the large bags up to the counter and out to my car. Also get my bird feeding supplies there. It is worth the drive.

AAAAA 200+ unsolicited Google reviews, average 4.8 A Google Paws Stop then click reviews!

Justin W. - The staff is so friendly, motivated and truly enjoy being there. Its like the Trader Joes of pet stores. I have been getting my dog food here for years. There new location is very nice. They do a great job and I wish more stores had this vibe. They care and will go above and beyond to help. #1 pet store right here.

Tamera H. - Always a pleasant experience every time I go in there. Staff are so friendly and helpful. They know a lot about the products they sell so it’s easier to make decisions on products for your pet.

Steve Cage’s collection includes more than 50 luxury, racing and muscle cars.

Behind the Wheel of Local Entrepreneur Steve Cage’s Private Car Collection Writer / Josh Brown Photographer / Michael Durr

Steve Cage has been a car aficionado pretty much his entire life. In 1980, Cage garnered success in creating a business that looked for defects in automobiles. The company was wildly successful. “Cars were built very poorly in the 80s,” Cage says. “I had the opportunity, back then, to work with all the big automotive

manufacturers. We provided a service that helped stop the interruption of defects that suppliers might make. Unfortunately, we did find problems through that and ended up being the largest company in the world providing that service.”

In 2017, Cage sold his business yet again.

Cage sold the company in 2004, but five years later, the company he sold it to went out of business. So, in 2009, Cage started another company providing the same service, Stratosphere Quality. His love for cars and the automotive industry only continued to grow throughout his journey.

Cage’s love for cars began well before he started his businesses. It was his father’s career path that initially sparked his interest in cars as a kid.

AUGUST 2019

“We sold it to a great company out of Japan,” he says. “They are doing wonderfully and we are happy for them. Throughout all those years, I started collecting cars.”

“When I was growing up, my dad was a Chrysler executive,” Cage says. “He helped

develop some of their engines back in the day. We were fortunate to have about two new cars every year in high school and college growing up. I was pretty blessed. That gave me a chance to get in those cars though, drive around and get a feel for them. Being around it all my life, that gave me the fever. As I had the chance to work with all these manufacturers over the years, I decided to collect different types of cars.” The result today is Cage’s private car collection: The RPM Collection: American Muscle Car Museum. The collection includes more than 50 luxury, racing and muscle cars. “I enjoy it, always have,” Cage says. “The newer cars I’ve been able to procure myself. You call all over the country and try to find the best deals. The older cars, and ones with unique stories, take more searching. But once you get them in, it is a lot of fun.” Cage has quite the collection. Among his favorites includes the Plymouth Road Runner. Cage’s Road Runner previously belonged to none other than MLB Hall of Famer and New York Yankees legend Reggie Jackson. “The Road Runner was a tough one to get,” Cage says. “But we were able to procure it from Reggie. It is pretty cool. It still has the nice ‘beep, beep’ to it that you used to hear.” Others in his collection include seven Dodge Demons (which can go 0 to 60 miles per hour in 2.3 seconds, 1998 and 2017 Dodge Vipers, an award-winning 70s Mopar restoration collection, multiple Ferraris, several 1970 Plymouth ‘Cudas, multiple Dodge Challenger T/As and Shelby Cobras and much more. “The Hemi Cuda was the car of the day,” Cage says. “It was technologically way ahead of competitors at the time. Chrysler had a lot of great engineers at the time. Those are as sweet as it gets.” Probably the most unique and rare part of Cage’s collection sits in the back corner in a display all to its own. Cage was able to obtain the 1971 Indy 500 Pace Car, famous

for crashing at the beginning of the race. He also owns the backup pace car from that race and the 2019 No. 2 Indy 500 Pace Car which was featured in Simon Pagenaud’s victory lap this year. “That 1971 race is the only IndyCar race that has ever had a major accident with a pace car,” Cage says. “It was coming into the pits at 125 miles per hour and the brakes locked, the car hit the photography stand and, thankfully, no one was killed. Years later, I got the chance to buy it from Eldon Palmer, a local car dealer who was the one driving it the year it crashed. He passed away a couple years ago and was a great guy. So, I’ve got the most famous pace car in the world.” Typically, the pace car goes to the winner of the Indy 500. That year, in 1971, since the pace car crashed, IndyCar allowed the winner, Al Unser, to request a “victory” car he would like. Today, believe it or not, Cage owns that unique car in his collection as well.

“They asked Unser what he wanted and he said, ‘I want a Dodge Charger,’” Cage says. “It was the first time in history that has happened. He asked for a yellow one with a black top. We got it from his family, that he sold it to, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It was totally trashed, kind of like the Dukes of Hazard. We put it back together, and we know the car was his because we have all the documentation.” Cage also owns a 1968 Ford Mustang Eleanor. There are several recreations of the popular car featured in the movie “Gone In 60 Seconds.” Cage’s Eleanor is one built by the famous George Barris himself and was actually driven around and used to promote the movie. The car is loaded up with a dual quad 428 engine, modified to 650 horsepower and a film-accurate interior.

Barris is famous for building one-of-akind cars used in TV and movies like The Batmobile from the Adam West Batman TV series in the late 60s, The Munster Koach from the 60s sitcom “The Munsters” and many more. “I got a chance to buy the car from Barris, and it is a really cool car,” Cage says. “It is as fast as can be, but it will shake your teeth out of your head.” Not all of the cars in Cage’s collection are just for show only. One of the questions Cage often gets asked is, “How often do you drive these cars?” “I do drive some of these,” Cage says. “I actually drove the Eleanor once to The Original Pancake House in Fishers. It is street legal, but it sounds like it is a race car. I pulled up and everyone came out of the restaurant to see it because they could hear it from inside. It’s a lot of fun.” Cage’s car collection is private — mainly reserved for family, friends and colleagues. He has, however, hosted fundraisers, galas and other events at his garage in the past and is open to more of those in the future to be able to highlight his collection some in the community and provide a unique venue for those looking to rent a space out for a big event. “We do host events where you pay to host the event, have food catered here and see the

cars,” Cage says. “We have also done team-building events in the past as well.” Beyond his car collection, Cage stays busy with his latest venture — Cage Campus. Cage Campus, located in Fishers, includes “workspaces designed to maximize engagement and productivity.” Cage’s goal with Cage Campus is to empower local startups and other entrepreneurs with resources to sustain steady growth in their young companies.

“Once I retired, I wanted to provide entrepreneurs a space at an economical cost,” he says. “We tried to come up with a concept to help these young entrepreneurs.” Cage, a Geist resident, also gives back to the community in a variety of ways. His most recent contribution in the last year includes donating more than $60,000 to the City of Fishers for brand new pickleball courts at Cyntheanne Park. The park continues to be a busy place for a sport that Cage loves and a sport that continues to grow in popularity across the country. “The sport is a lot of fun and it gives people the opportunity to do something for their wellness,” he says. “Now, we also have two of the nicest pickleball courts in the country right here at Cage Campus, too. We have a great atmosphere of work and play.” You can visit Cage Campus online at cagecampus.com. For more information on Cage Campus or The RPM Collection, email hello@ cagecampus.com.

AMPED UP FISHERS SUMMER CONCERT SERIES RETURNS TO THE NICKEL PLATE DISTRICT AMPHITHEATER WITH NEW FEATURES & AMENITIES Writer / Samantha Kupiainen Photography provided City of Fishers & Brian Brosmer

If you’ve passed by the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater this summer on a Tuesday or Friday evening, chances are you’ve heard The Fishers Summer Concert Series. The Concert Series is hosted by Fishers Parks & Recreation. It offers free concerts three days a week — Tuesday and Friday evenings, which are presented by IU Health Saxony, and Wednesday during lunchtime, presented by Meyer Najem. Most shows feature local performers and artists.

Sandquist, Fishers Director of Parks & Recreation. “At some point in the future we look to have maybe a comedy show or Shakespeare in the Park kind of activities or musical theater.” Other new amenities include a sensoryfriendly area, which is located within the Pavilion building, and kids’ activities in the grass in front of the Pavilion building as well.

“It’s an area of activation for children with sensory issues, as well as a respite area,” Sandquist adds. “So, if it’s too loud in the concert area, if they need to come into the Changes this season include new Pavilion for a calm down area, that’s a spot showtimes, a refreshed venue and both local for them.” and national performing acts. “We’re so excited that the construction on the amphitheater is done. We have this new and renovated space with a deeper stage, so we can have some bigger acts,” says Sarah

Kids activities will be on a rotating schedule and will be available every Tuesday night, as well as most Friday nights. It will be close enough so parents can still have a view of their children playing in the grass. AUGUST 2019

All performances from The Fishers Concert Series are free, with the exception of two dates. All shows start at 8 p.m. and gates open at 6 p.m. Food and beverage vendors will be available on-site at both shows. Outside food and drink is allowed and encouraged. However, no outside food or beverages will be permitted at the two ticketed shows. “All the businesses in the Nickel Plate District are open for business. We encourage people to grab to-go options from there and bring it to the show,” Sandquist says. The first ticketed show is Friday, August 9. The amphitheater will welcome Jade Bird and Ruston Kelly in partnership with 92.3 WTTS. Jade Bird is a new and exciting British voice in the alternative music world. Ruston Kelly is a Nashville-based artist who will debut his first full-length album later this year. Tickets for this show are available now for $9.23 at npdamp.com/Tickets.

“There’s tons of families — everyone is coming to just chill out and enjoy good music,” Sandquist says. “Just sitting on the lawn on a summer night, it’s kind of your perfect evening and to have that opportunity to do that every Tuesday and Friday is really fun.” The second ticketed show, and final performance of the season at Nickel Plate District Amphitheater, will be Friday, September 20, featuring Grammy awardwinning artist, Van Hunt, whose music style is R&B soul, funk, pop, and rock ‘n’ roll. His nearly 15-year music career has earned him opportunities to headline alongside Kanye West, Coldplay, Dave Matthews Band and more. Tickets for this show are $10.

“You can bring your lawn chair,” Sandquist says. “You can bring in food. We also have food and beverage vendors on-site — it rotates nightly. 5280 Bistro and MashCraft are there every Tuesday, and Four Day Ray will be there for the ticketed shows. They rotate and there is some consistency. We don’t necessarily advertise who or put that out on social because it changes so frequently.” For Tuesday night performances, Sandquist says there will always be about 2-3 vendors. On Friday nights, there will typically be 3-4 vendors at the amphitheater. Additionally, the Fishers Summer Concert Series will host its fifth annual Blues Fest on August 30 and August 31. The free, twoday event will feature performances from

renowned blues artists like B.B. King Blues Band featuring Michael Lee, John Ford, The Blues Ambassadors and more. “We’re excited about the season and we’re about a quarter of the way in,” Sandquist says. “There is still plenty of time to come see some great music and round out the second half of the summer with concerts at the amp.” A full list of performances is available online on the Nickel Plate Amphitheater website at npdamp.com. All performances are at the amphitheater, located at 6 Municipal Dr. All performances are free, with the exception of the two ticketed events on August 9 and September 20. All shows start at 8 p.m. and gates open at 6 p.m.

The Bucket List MIDWEST BALLOON RIDES TO HOST BUCKET LIST SHOW SEPTEMBER 12 Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Brian Brosmer

A “Bucket List” is a number of experiences that one wants to do in their lifetime before they die and is something people think about but often don’t act on. Some individuals are not even sure what to put on it. Tony Sandlin, owner and chief pilot of Midwest Balloon Rides has come up with a way people can create their own bucket list, cross a couple things off of it and add even more. On Thursday, September 12, Sandlin is hosting the Bucket List Show, a fun evening that includes not only a tethered hot air balloon ride and a helicopter ride but also music, food, drinks, entertainment and booths staffed with representatives knowledgeable about other bucket-list-worthy activities. The event will be held at Tom Wood Aviation at the Indianapolis Metropolitan Airport, 9913 Willow View Road in Fishers, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tickets for the show are $135 until August 30. After that date, the price is $150. For most attendees, the highlight of the

event will be the opportunity to experience not only a balloon ride but a helicopter ride as well. Sandlin’s company, Midwest Balloon Rides, will have its colorful balloons on site and ready to take riders up on a tether to a height of about 80 feet. Freedom Helicopters will be on hand to provide flights that will soar up to 500 feet above the airport. A professional photographer will be snapping photos to commemorate these once-in-a-lifetime experiences all throughout the evening. “During the balloon ride, people are in a basket with a door,” Sandlin says. “A tethered, 80-foot ride is an easy way to try it out. For some, the balloon ride and helicopter ride might offer enough of the experience that they can check it off their bucket list right then. But if someone wants a longer experience at a different time, we are there to give them more information.”

local disc jockey, Sunny Moon, while small plates from Barbecue & Bourbon and Tijuana Flats are enjoyed. Two drinks are included from the onsite cash bar plus unlimited soft drinks. Guests will be treated to a special dessert, too. Participants will be enlightened on other opportunities available for adding to a bucket list when they visit information stalls staffed with knowledgeable activity representatives. Planes and helicopters from Tom Wood Aviation will be on display and instructors will be on hand to answer questions on learning to fly both vehicles. Other booths may include scuba diving, exotic travel, sky diving and even ballroom dance lessons. In addition, exotic car rentals will be on display. “A typical balloon ride costs $250 per person, per hour,” Sandlin says. “The $135 price of the Bucket List Show offers guests a huge value. They can experience a balloon and helicopter ride in addition to having an entertaining and enlightening evening – all centered around their bucket list.”

The evening will provide plenty of opportunity to socialize and meet other like-minded people while being entertained. At least three acts by the Cincinnati Circus will be strolling through For more information and to purchase the crowd, such as fire throwing and stilt walking. Music will be provided by popular tickets visit 4BucketList.com. AUGUST 2019

INDIANA STATE FAIR RETURNS AUGUST 2-18 WITH NEW THEME, FOOD & FAMILY FUN Writer / Samantha Kupiainen Photography provided

Three of the most highly anticipated weeks in Indiana are almost here — the Indiana State Fair. The Indiana State Fair runs from Friday, August 2, through Sunday, August 18. This year’s theme, Heroes in the Heartland, which is presented by the Indiana Donor Network, salutes the countless Hoosiers who keep our country safe and make residents proud. Those heroes include farmers, first responders, educators, members of the Armed forces and cultural heroes as well. “The theme is always really important because it helps us develop all the activation and all the programming from year to year, from fair to fair,” says Sharon Smith, Director of Communications for the Indiana State Fair Commission.

Smith adds that when planning the state fair, it was important that it aligned well with an organization or business that really complimented the Heroes of the Heartland theme, such as the Indiana Donor Network. “The theme serves as a touchpoint to so many individuals and organizations and has such a broad appeal, again, with the balance between superheroes and cultural heroes,” Smith says. “It will touch a lot of Hoosiers and a lot of lives, and that’s why we selected that particular theme.” In addition to a new theme, the fair also has a wide selection of new features for guests to enjoy. “We’re bringing back the Big Top Circus, which was wildly popular last year,” Smith says. “It’s returning with new acts, though we will be bringing back Bello Nock, who is a kind of comic daredevil. He was extremely popular last year. I think people will be AUGUST 2019

happy to see him back again.” Other new amenities include a $5 fast pass for reserved seating at the Big Top. It will allow folks to have premium seating, so they won’t have to wait in line for first-come, first-served seating. However, free seating will also be offered for those who won’t wish to pay and are able to wait. Another new feature this year is a popular trend from across the country — goat yoga. Sixty-minute sessions will be offered at 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. Folks can register on the Indiana State Fair website for one of the $20 sessions. Also returning this year is Animal Town, which features eight different barnyard animals from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. each day of the fair. It’s located east of the Hoosier Lottery Grandstand next to the Communications Building.

“It was very popular last year,” Smith says. “It allowed folks to get up close and personal with barnyard animals and learn about them. Animal Town makes it a lot more user-friendly to get up close and personal with a variety of animals and learn all about them in a user-friendly way. There is a lot of posted information about the animals that you can take in at your leisure.” The Indiana State Fair also has new menu items. For Smith, her favorite part of the fair is its food. “We always offer some crazy, whacky and always delicious kind of extraordinary food item,” Smith says. Some new items include the Indiana Pork BBQ Split, which is offered by Indiana Pork Producers. The menu item is served just like a banana split — three scoops of pulled pork, macaroni and cheese, and coleslaw all served on top of a baked potato. Monroe’s Big Dog Diner is also offering fairgoers its Monroe’s Midwest Hero — a handbreaded tenderloin with cheese, bacon and Monroe’s special sassy sauce. The Dairy Bar is also debuting its Hoosier Hometown Hash — two grilled hash brown patties surrounded by four types of cheese: Muenster, pepper jack, cheddar and Swiss. Urick Concessions will be serving up deepfried cookie ice cream sandwiches, while Red Frazier Bison is featuring bison hush puppies. To have the best fair experience, Smith suggests going on $2 Tuesday. “If you come on $2 Tuesday, you can sample a lot of different food items for $2,” Smith says. “Admission is $2, parking is $2, and food samples are $2. That’s a great way to experience the fair. Use $2 Tuesday to go around and sample some things, not just the food and activities. You can come back another day and focus more on what you really love.” The Indiana State Fair runs from Friday, August 2 through Sunday, August 18. It’s located at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis, 1202 E. 38th St. For additional information, such as a list of vendors and hours of operation, visit them online at indianastatefair.com/state-fair. The City of Fishers is stepping up to the plate when it comes to strengthening its art and cultural district. One way it’s doing so is through the Fishers Arts Crawl, which is presented in partnership with the Fishers Arts Council. The Fishers Arts Crawl is a night where residents can wander around and shop

at businesses within the Nickel Plate District, which was recently designated as a Statewide Cultural District. While there, visitors will see local and regional artwork and performances. Traditionally, the Arts Crawl is a one-day event in July. However, this year there are three Arts Crawls – the recent July 19 one and another on August 16, both from 6-9 p.m., and September 14 from 4-9 p.m. Two additional Arts Crawls were added this year AUGUST 2019

to commemorate its fifth anniversary. “Our July and August Arts Crawl are very traditionally what Arts Crawl usually is, which is different artists or performers around the Nickel Plate District inside local businesses. It’s a collaboration between businesses and artists,” says Stephanie Perry, Assistant Director of Public Relations for the City of Fishers. “Our September one will be that, but we’re hoping that it’s so much more and

that we’ll have almost a street festival feel around the Municipal Complex.” For visitors wanting to bring children, the September Arts Crawl will be the anniversary celebration, which will be more family-oriented. The other two, July and August, will be more adult-oriented. Mixed Mediums This year, the Arts Crawl has the most artists they’ve ever had participating. Visitors can expect to see a variety of mediums and styles of art around the Nickel Plate District. They will also hear blues bands, acoustics and Acapella groups. “We have visual artists and we have performing artists,” says Tom Rich, Vice President of the Fishers Arts Council. “They can expect to enjoy what the businesses offer them, with some of the businesses offering some specials. And then in addition, they’ll be able to experience some of the artwork from the artists and hear some music.” Several businesses will offer special promotions during Arts Crawl. Deals range from complimentary services and refreshments to discounts on purchases. “The businesses are really embracing it and trying to expand their role as well,” Perry says. The Fishers Arts Council hopes to get people to understand that the Arts Crawl is dynamic and not static. To make it more dynamic, the Arts Crawl will have live performances by VOCE Indianapolis, an Acapella group, and Anthony Boler, a magician, as they travel around the Nickel Plate District throughout the evening. “It’s more than just going out to dinner or going to a business,” Rich says. Leveraging Arts and Culture With Arts Crawl expanding over three dates and three months’ time, it’s showcasing how the city is leveraging its arts and cultures. When Fishers became a Statewide Cultural District in December, it started an arts commission.

“We’re stepping up to the plate when it comes to art and culture — we want to be known for that,” Perry says. “But along with that, it’s a beautiful evening to enjoy downtown Fishers, discover new local artists and performers that maybe you’re not familiar with and also discover new businesses.” Rich says that for local artists, the Arts Crawl is a chance for them to display their work. “That’s really exciting for us because Fishers artists, they really don’t have a lot of places to exhibit their art and this is one of the few chances throughout the year where they can showcase their art and have it seen by their friends and their neighbors,” Rich says. “It’s nice for artists to exhibit, but this also gives them the chance to sell, too.” The Fishers Arts Crawl has two remaining dates, August 16 from 6-9 p.m., and September 14 from 4-9 p.m. The Arts Crawl is free to attend. For more information about the event, such as participating businesses, artists and performers, visit playfishers.com/184/Arts-Crawl.

2ND ANNUAL KICK FOR S.P.O.R.T.S. KICKBALL TOURNAMENT RETURNS SEPTEMBER 21 Writer / Samantha Kupiainen Photography provided

HSE S.P.O.R.T.S. will hold its 2nd annual KICK FOR S.P.O.R.T.S. kickball tournament on September 21 at Billericay Park. The event will host teams made up of six to 10 players to compete in a double elimination, bracketed kickball tournament starting at 9 a.m. Everyone is welcome to register for the tournament — businesses, sports leagues, friends, neighborhoods and community groups. Teams will then be divided into separate divisions based on age and team makeup.

“Our goal in putting together KICK FOR S.P.O.R.T.S. was to create an event that is unique to the Fishers community, that includes participants of all ages, in a fun sport that everyone can play,” says Beth Lawrence, development coordinator for HSE S.P.O.R.T.S. There are several new changes to the tournament this year, such as its new location at Billericay Park, which is also where the S.P.O.R.T.S. office is located. “Holding the kickball tournament at our new location will allow us to utilize two AUGUST 2019

more fields than we had during our first year — so we can bring on more teams,” Lawrence says. “We look forward to having close to 30 teams battle it out on eight fields throughout the park.” There is a fee for each team to register. Every team will have one captain who will serve as the team’s main contact to communicate game times, tournament rules and updates. However, children’s teams (junior high school or younger) must have a parent team captain. Teams can register at kickforsports.org/events/ kick-for-s-p-o-r-t-s.

“Funds raised during the tournament will provide youth sports scholarships for underprivileged families in Fishers,” Lawrence adds. “These scholarships give families access to programs offered by S.P.O.R.T.S. for any or all of the fall, winter and spring seasons during the school year. The money raised from this event also allows S.P.O.R.T.S. to provide background checks and key training for more than 2,000 coaches involved in its leagues and assist with maintenance efforts for our fields and facilities.” Each game will run approximately a half hour, and teams are encouraged to wear costumes or corporate branding shirts. Each participating player will also receive an official KICK FOR S.P.O.R.T.S. T-shirt during the event. “Under the new 2019 format, the games will run every half-hour and teams will be able to participate with a minimum of six players and a maximum of 11,” Lawrence says. “In planning for this year, we wanted to give participants more flexibility to join us on a busy Saturday and the new six-person minimum caters to this. If a participant needs to leave to coach or play a game, they can do so and rejoin their kickball team afterward.” She also says that the tournament is “truly a community event.” Residents who are not playing in the event are still encouraged to come out and cheer on the teams. Food and drink vendors will be onsite, as will music and other activities. Medals will be given to division champs.

“Last year, we had teams ranging from elementary school age children through adults and everything in between,” Lawrence says. “We had sports teams and companies use KICK as a team-building event. We had families play alongside their neighbors and church youth groups compete against each other all in the spirit of having fun on a Saturday. The team pride was off the charts and we loved seeing all of the clever themes.”

A SCOUT IS…

With fun and discovery at every turn, Boy Scouts of America programs make the most of right now. But what’s more, they build positive character and provide young people a foundation they can stand on to embrace opportunity, make new discoveries, and overcome obstacles. The more time kids spend in Scouting, the better the outcomes in character development Scouts are more likely to embrace positive social values than non-Scouts When asked what was most important to them, Scouts were significantly more likely than non-Scouts to choose “helping others” or “doing the right thing” versus “being smart,” “being the best,” or “playing sports” INFORMATION PART OF A 3-YEAR STUDY CONDUCTED BY TUFTS UNIVERSITY.

LAWRENCE ITALIAN FEST RETURNS AUGUST 2 Writer / Jon Shoulders Photography provided

Five years ago, Tom Crouch was deep in a brainstorming session trying to raise funds for the Kiwanis Club of Lawrence, of which he was then president. Suddenly, a simple idea struck him - why not invite locals to a night of delicious Italian food and socializing, and raise funds through ticket sales and special purchases at the event?

Thus, the club’s annual Italian Fest was born, and elementary schools. We encourage and Crouch says it’s been a hit with locals them to sell tickets, so they can bring their ever since. parents if they want. And it’s a chance for the Kiwanis family to get together and have “It’s a nice chance to both fundraise and a quiet evening.” socialize with your friends and with some good food,” Crouch says, current Lawrence Fest attendees are treated to a robust Italian Kiwanis vice-president and Italian Fest dining experience - there’s Italian wedding co-chair. “It’s a way that we support certain soup, breadsticks, salad, spaghetti, meatballs leadership teams in the high schools, and baked zucchini. Wine and desserts are Marian University, and the junior high also available for purchase. atGeist.com / AUGUST 2019 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 39

All proceeds from the event, which will be held on August 2 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., benefit Kiwanis Club of Lawrence’s various service projects. The organization supports Riley Hospital for Children and Ronald McDonald House, as well as offers scholarships to local high school students. Additionally, it helps to organize youth leadership programs at the elementary, junior high, and high school levels in Lawrence Township. Crouch says the fest has drawn around 100 attendees each year since the inaugural event and is optimistic that crowds will increase this August and in future years. “We bring in Rick Cianelli, who’s a great cook, and he makes enough for about 150 people, so there’s always plenty of food for everyone,” he says. “It’s really a fun evening.” Scott Maskel, event co-chair and Lawrence Kiwanis member, says Cianelli’s culinary expertise has raised the event to a new level since it began five years ago. “For a few years we didn’t use Rick, and once we got him the quality of the food went through the roof,” Maskel says. “Rick and his family have a background in the restaurant business, and the food is exceptional. Each year attendance

QUALITY ASSETS. has grown since the Cianellis took over cooking, because word has gotten out on just how good the food is.” Maskel says the Kiwanis Club added a few kids’ activities and a silent auction to the Italian Fest in past years but has since decided to focus exclusively on providing food and a lively social atmosphere. “We found that some of the other stuff made the space crowded and got in the way, so we wanted to make it about having good food and getting together with friends,” he says. “Folks come from other Kiwanis clubs around the area outside of Lawrence to support the event, and thankfully each year it’s grown.” The Italian Fest isn’t the only event the Kiwanis Club of Lawrence will be busy with in the month of August — during the annual City of Lawrence Community Safety Day on August 10, Kiwanis members will offer a youth bicycle safety course, teaching kids to ride a bike and learn traffic signals. Participating kids get a free bicycle helmet, and Kiwanis will also give away a free bicycle. This year’s Community Safety Day will also feature SWAT and K-9 officer demos, a climbing wall, face painting, a free hot dog meal and more. Visit cityoflawrence.org for more details.

KINSEY’S ITALIAN CAFÉ OWNER TALKS 8 YEARS OF SUCCESS IN MCCORDSVILLE Writer / Matt Keating . Photographer / Lucas Cooley

atGeist.com / AUGUST 2019 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 43

If there is one thing that Randy Kinsey, co-owner of Kinsey’s Italian Café, knows, it’s pizza. In fact, pizza and Italian food have been a big part of his life since he was a kid. It’s why he and his wife, Christi, opened Kinsey’s Italian Café, 6383 W. Broadway, McCordsville, in 2011. They brought a partner, Joe Leath, on board in 2015, to help with the business. He also shares their love of Italian cuisine. “Pizza and Italian food is our livelihood and passion,” Kinsey says. “I started working for Luca Pizza when I was 15 years old. I was with them for 20 years. Joe worked with Luca Pizza and Enzo Pizza for 15 years. Then he had Philadelphia Steak and Fries at the Indianapolis City Market in downtown Indy for 15 years.” Their combined pizza and restaurant experience have paid off tremendously. Kinsey’s Italian Café has grown steadily since they opened. “We have had a really good response,” Kinsey says. “We have had a 10 to 15 percent growth each year since we opened.” Their delicious specialty pizzas include The Marauder, with sausage, pepperoni, ham, fresh garlic, spinach, onions, green

or banana peppers, black or green olives, mushrooms and pineapple, The Hoosier with sausages, pepperoni, bacon, and ham, and The Hancock with sausage, pepperoni and mushrooms, among many other pizza choices. They also have a wide selection of regular and premium pizza toppings. Their pasta dinners and signature dishes are also popular. “Our best seller is our Homemade Lasagna,” Kinsey says. “Other favorites are Chicken Parmesan, Fettuccini Alfredo and our subs. We make all of our pizza dough daily and our own sub sandwich buns.”

Kinsey’s Italian Café also has delicious Beef Ravioli, Cheesy Manicotti and Tri-Colored Tortellini, among other choices. “My favorite is our Chicken Bruschetta and Spinach Abruzzo pasta dinners,” Kinsey adds. The Tuscany Bruschetta with bacon and a bruschetta mix over Fettuccine with Alcedo sauce is also excellent. Sandwiches include an Italian Sub, The McCord with sliced chicken breast, jalapeño peppers, red onions, spinach and mozzarella cheese and a wide variety of cheeseburgers. That’s just a few of a wide selection of sandwiches to choose from. The drink specials at Kinsey’s are also a big draw. Kinsey noted that every Thursday is $3.00 off any bottle of wine, and they also serve beer. PROUD HOOSIER Kinsey loves living in Indiana. “I am from this area, and we have a family farm that has been in our family since 1937,” Kinsey says. “Christi and I live there along with our children. I graduated in 1985 from Greenfield Central High School. Joe actually has lived in this area since his parents relocated here in 1979. He was a 1983 graduate of Mount Vernon High School. Joe Leath and his family live in Fortville.
