DANIEL’S VINEYARD REOPENS TO THE PUBLIC Writer / Julie Yates Photography Provided
The staff at Daniel’s Vineyard is excited to bring enjoyment to the dog days of summer. The McCordsville winery is now open to the public daily from noon to 6 p.m. Although its products have been accessible to the area through neighborhood visits via a trolley-like wine truck as well as curbside pickup, strong community support was a factor in reopening the facility. “The community has driven the family to open the winery as a local gathering space,” says Jessica Pontius, general manager at the facility. “We are requiring masks inside the tasting room and suggesting outdoor
seating. Our staff will wear masks, and we have increased our cleaning standards and protocols.” In 2010, owners Daniel and Kimberly Cook were inspired to transform a tract of land they had owned for several years into a winery. The idea was conceived during a family trip to the Tuscan foothills in Italy, where they became enchanted by the area’s vineyards. Upon returning home, they sought out the advice of Purdue University staff members for best practices to grow grapes in Indiana soil. All five of the Cooks’ children, plus many friends and neighbors, were involved in the initial planting of 14,000 grapevines. After 8 / GEIST MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2020 / atGeist.com
three years of careful cultivation, enough grapes were harvested to produce the vineyard’s first wines. Today, the facility is in full production and offers more than 15 high-quality wines. Each year’s experience leads to the development of new offerings. “Our first release, launched at the start of summer, was Watermelon Rosé,” Pontius says of this season’s offerings. “This deliciously effervescent beverage was built for summer consumption. We added watermelon to a dry rosé wine and made it fizzy. We launched a Tangerine Blanc in July as well.” Cellar Club participants, along with their guests, enjoy members-only tasting room
nights every Wednesday, along with other exclusive events and benefits. Twice per year, they are offered additional handpicked wines produced at the winery. Some of the vineyard’s premier wines are reserved for Cellar Club members. “Our July Cellar Club release included our first pétillant natural wine,” Pontius says. “It is the oldest method of creating natural, fizzy wine. A 2019 riesling was bottled without any additions and just one ingredient - grapes. It was then left to finish fermenting with native yeast, creating a fun, young fizzy wine with bright acidity, and notes of Meyer lemon, grapefruit and fresh pineapple.” The vineyard’s traveling wine truck began visiting local neighborhoods and communities in April. This wineon-wheels concept lifted spirits during coronavirus-related business shutdowns. It proved to be tremendously popular and will continue throughout the summer and fall.

“The winery will be hosting live acoustic music Friday through Sunday every week,” Pontius adds. “In the future, we hope to add comedy nights, wine and workout classes, and more. We are excited to see everyone at the vineyard this summer.” Daniel’s Vineyard is located at 9061 N 700 W. in McCordsville. For more info, call 317-248-5222 and visit danielsvineyard.com. REOPENING FISHERS:
RESTAURANTS & GYMS Writer / Seth Johnson As many Fishers bars and restaurants open back up, the plan is to continue satisfying dine-in and carryout needs alike.
Like many other local businesses, Fishers gyms and fitness centers have been forced to pivot from the old way of doing things.
Known much more for their dine-in, Wolfies Grill had to completely shift gears when the coronavirus pandemic hit.
Located at The Yard at Fishers District, Fishers’ CycleBar found success from renting out their equipment to devoted members.
“We’re finally at the point that we’ve got that down, but that was a whole change, just learning how to do carryout,” says Wolfies Grill owner Scott Wolf.
“The day after we closed, I had our manager put out an email to rent bikes,” says Fishers CycleBar owner Amanda Moor. “Less than 24 hours later, we rented all 45 bikes in the studio. So that helped with cash flow.”
While he’s excited to welcome patrons back to his lakeside locations, Wolf says that carryout will still remain an option for those who prefer it. “I think some people aren’t going to be comfortable, and we understand that and are going to have curbside,” Wolf says. “We’ll have that available, but we also want you to come in. I’m optimistic it’s going to be good, and I think we’re going to get through this.” After opening in February, Ohana Donuts & Ice Cream was forced to change its course right out of the gate. This was made a little bit easier, however, due to the business’s meager staff. “Being so small and so new, we were able to adapt on the fly and really juts changed our business model,” says Ohana Donuts & Ice Cream owner Nate Haugh. “For about the first two weeks, there was some panic. But after we got a little bit of momentum going through the carryout and the online ordering, that really eased my pain.” Ohana Donuts & Ice Cream now plans to open a food truck, in anticipation of any further hurdles. “We want to capitalize on the good weather right now and take advantage of every opportunity that we have to bring in some sales,” Haugh adds. “So, we figured going to people is probably our best bet right now.” While carryout and liquor store sales have certainly come in handy for Sun King Brewing, co-owner Clay Robinson is happy to have his beer back in bars and restaurants again. “Being able to have people back in our taprooms is huge for us,” Robinson says. “Bars and restaurants reopening is also huge for us. So the combination of those two things is positive. People really seem to want to get out and are starting to figure out how to navigate it.” This being said, carryout will always be an option with Sun King as well. “We have a focus still on our to-go program because there are people who aren’t comfortable going out,” Robinson says. “If you aren’t comfortable going out, we still can deliver directly to your trunk with curbside.” Make sure to support your favorite, local restaurants in Fishers during this time!
TOM BRITT HOSTS CONVERSTAIONS WITH LOCAL BUSINESS OWNERS POST COVID-19 SHUTDOWN VIA FACEBOOK LIVE.
Since reopening the Fishers CycleBar, Moor has taken necessary social distancing precautions. “Our members that are back still stress that they don’t feel fully comfortable with 45 people in our small studio at one time,” Moor says. “So we have to listen to that and adjust accordingly.” The Max Challenge of Fishers has also put necessary social distancing protocols into place, explains co-owner Sheila Tunison. “We actually have our mat all set up so that we have pathways for people to get to X’s that are on the mat,” she says. “We have seven-foot distancing between the X’s so that people can get to their space, and then they can also leave from their space, all while social distancing.” Max Challenge is also instructing members to bring their own water. “They take their water, sweat towels and things like that to their space with them, so we don’t dismiss people in the class to go get drinks of water and things like that,” Tunison says. Like many other gyms and fitness centers, the Fishers YMCA has shifted focus to providing online instruction. “Within that first week, we started developing virtual programming and partnering with Les Mills to do at-home workouts for our members and for the community as well,” says Fishers YMCA executive director Jake ReardonMcSoley. “We developed a large content library for our YMCA to do online.” In terms of their summer programming for kids, Reardon-McSoley says some adjustments definitely had to be made. “We actually are not doing summer camp this year,” he says. “We are offering something that’s called Summer Childcare. We’ve really made massive adjustments to what we normally would do. “All of our staff are given a temperature check, wear masks and have medical screening questions when they come in,” he adds. “Same thing with the kids. They’re not required to wear a mask but we do have social distancing throughout the day.” Be sure to support your local Fishers gyms and fitness centers during this time!

MUDSOCK YOUTH ATHLETICS LEADERS TALK REBRAND & COMMUNITY COMMITMENT Writer / Jon Shoulders Photography Provided
Residents throughout the greater Fishers area might have noticed Mudsock Youth Athletics (MYA), the primary local outlet for non-school youth sports programming, recently underwent a rebrand from its former moniker, S.P.O.R.T.S. Executive Director Scott Spillman says the rebrand decision came from a collective desire among the organization’s leaders to clarify its voice in the community as a nonprofit provider of a wide range of athletic programs. MYA was founded in 1987 by a group of locals representing various single-sport leagues with the intention of creating an organization that benefited the youth in Fishers and in the Hamilton Southeastern school district. At the time, the town population was approximately 2,000 people. Today, Fishers has nearly 90,000
people and MYA typically sees more than 10,000 registrations for its various sports programs annually.
members, collaborated with a local branding company throughout 2019 in the process of rebranding.
“Through this extensive research, it became clear that a rename and new logo was necessary to reflect how our organization has evolved and to more accurately highlight “Despite our growth, our mission has stayed the services and programs we offer,” the same since we began - to foster character Lawrence says. “While the Mudsock name development, leadership skills and physical is used more recently to highlight the yearly fitness in the youth of our community,” competitions between the two high schools, Assistant Director Beth Lawrence says. “We our commitment to the community is more are proud that Mudsock Youth Athletics about collaboration and working closely is now the largest volunteer organization with both the City of Fishers and the HSE in Fishers with more than 2,000 people School District.” investing their time over the course of the year. Every position - our coaches, Spillman says MYA leaders reached out commissioner and league boards - is filled to parents and participants for thoughts by volunteers.” on both the organization itself and any particular words or phrases that bring to mind youth sports programs. both a modern feel and a retro look, representing an optimistic outlook for the future while acknowledging the organization’s 33-year history. “We wanted to simplify the overall look while choosing a name that carried a greater meaning within our community,” Spillman says. “Our tagline, ‘10,000 kids, 12 leagues, one community, and no offseason’, was created to capture the level of involvement the organization has in our community. As an umbrella organization comprised of 12 leagues, we utilize 32 facilities throughout the area and carry out more than 2,500 events during the year. That’s impactful.” Lawrence adds that the new logo reflects the organization’s recreational and competitive team sports that promote character development, leadership and physical fitness. The logo’s red tone represents Fishers High School, while the inclusion of blue represents Hamilton Southeastern School.
AUGUST 2020
“The athletic sock is featured prominently dipped in mud as a tribute to the history of the community, and the sock is also slightly slanted to mimic the shape of the state of Indiana,” Lawrence explains. “When families see Mudsock Youth Athletics’ logo and name, we want it to evoke trust and confidence in our organization. We want families to connect the great moments and experiences their kids have growing as athletes and individuals in our programs, to our brand.” MYA leaders also recently launched a committee focused exclusively on girls’ involvement in sports to curtail what Lawrence says is a growing trend of girls quitting youth athletics after the age of 12. “We are encouraging more women to participate as volunteers in our programs, and we are working with the city and schools to better engage our teenage girl population through much of our programming,” says Lawrence, adding that MYA awarded 326 program scholarships to
in-need families in Fishers last year. MYA online fall sports registration closed recently, but be sure to check myathletics. com for any league date changes due to COVID-19. Families within the HSE school district can register for football, cheerleading, soccer, girls volleyball, cross country, fall baseball and softball, and girls field hockey. Open registration occurs three times a year typically in January, May and August, beginning on the first day and extending throughout the month. Athletes that register during open enrollment are guaranteed a spot to play. After this time, league leaders place athletes on a waitlist and a late fee is implemented. Mudsock Youth Athletics is located at 12690 Promise Road in Fishers. For more information, including a full list of programs, a registration page, scholarship details and more, call 317-845-5582 and visit myathletics.com.

Smooth Sailing LOCAL COUPLE OVERCOMES OBSTACLES AS PORTSIDE MARINE OWNERS Writer / Trisha Turner Photographer / Eli Beaverson
In May of 2019, Jarret Silagyi and his wife Lauren purchased Portside Marine Sales and Service in Cicero. Within a year, a fire had destroyed the boat dealership, the Silagyis were battling serious injuries from a boating accident, and Jarret no longer had his corporate job. That doesn’t count the pandemic that seemingly brought the world to a standstill earlier this year. However, the Silagyis’ luck finally turned when Jarret learned there might be a new
home available for Portside Marine. That home that would allow the boat dealership to join forces with similar business a few miles away. The two boat dealerships have been serving the Morse, Geist and surrounding areas for over 75 years combined.
And business is booming. As a statedesignated essential business, boat sales and service have been in high demand despite the coronavirus pandemic.
“A lot of people didn’t expect us to make it through the fire,” Jarret Silagyi says. “I look back and say, ‘Well, this wasn’t the easiest path, but here we are. And we’re happy to be here.’”
However, the future didn’t look so rosy to Silagyi as he raced up Olio Road from his home in Fishers on October 14, 2019. He was heading to a flame-engulfed Portside Marine at its prior location in Cicero. He didn’t have to guess what he might find when he arrived. The billows of smoke, visible in the sky even as he traveled from miles away, told the story.
In June of this year, Portside Marine moved to the Lakeview Marina property, and the Silagyis own the separate businesses located on North Hague Road in Noblesville. AUGUST 2020
“It’s been busier than ever,” Silagyi says.
“It was a gut-wrenching half-hour drive,
seeing smoke and knowing it was the dealership,” Silagyi says. The fire, caused by a combination of an electric spark and fuel vapors in Portside’s service area, destroyed the business. Employees were safe, and Portside never closed. Another boat dealership owner, Jeff Lingenfelter, offered any help that his business, Lakeview Marina, could provide. Lakeview assisted with getting the word out about Portside’s plans to remain open, moving boats off Portside’s damaged
property, providing extra tools, and even referring customers to Portside. One year prior, Jarret had ended the limousine and bus company he’d owned while also serving as chief operating officer of a paper-shredding company. In the fall of 2019 he and Lauren were battling back after seeing their business go up in flames before their eyes, but bad luck wasn’t done with them yet. On New Year’s Eve in 2019, a boating accident in Florida left the Silagyis with serious injuries that kept them in the area recovering for two months.
Then, in March of 2020 - right around the time the coronavirus pandemic kicked into high gear - the Silagyis found themselves searching for a new home for Portside, when state officials alerted them that they planned to use Portside’s property as the location for a bridge. Then Jarret’s corporate job ended. A chance conversation with a friend helped the couple turn the corner. That friend said he knew someone who might be interested in selling his business. And that someone was Lingenfelter, who’d been such a good partner following the fire at Portside. Portside had found a new home.

Owners Jarret and Lauren Silagyi
Today Portside Marine and Lakeview Marina each remain open. They both deal in new and used boats at the same Noblesville address, but the businesses are separate. Portside sells many fiberglass boats, and Lakeview’s offerings include pontoons and personal watercraft. “Hopefully customers will see a benefit to our being together, all on one property,” Silagyi says. While the Silagyis own both businesses, the Lingenfelter family, who opened Lakeview in 1983, remain involved. Jeff and his wife Anita are retiring in August, but there are still five Lingenfelters among the Lakeview staff. “Both businesses are long-tenured community businesses,” Silagyi says of Portside and Lakeview. “Both names deserve to continue on.” Silagyi hopes this focus on family continues with his own twin sons, who are toddlers. After all, Jarret and Lauren both grew up in family businesses and as boating enthusiasts - Jarret in Pittsburgh and Lauren near Lawrenceburg, Indiana. “My wife and I are looking forward to having one focused, family business - something we can carry on for the prior owners and carry on to our own sons,” Silagyi says. To learn more about Portside Marine Sales and Service, visit portsidemarinesales.com, or call 317-7585500. For more on Lakeview Marina, visit lakeviewmarina.net, or call 317-773-6885. FISHERS AGRIPARK CELEBRATES GRAND OPENING Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Brian Brosmer
A one-of-a-kind park is now open in Fishers for the enjoyment - and education - of individuals and families throughout Central Indiana. In early 2018, Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness first announced the idea for the AgriPark in
his State of the City address, and later that year plans were underway to build out the park, which spans approximately 33 total acres near 113th Street and Florida Road. “We really think it’s important that the community knows where their food comes from and has access to fresh, locally grown produce,” says Sarah Sandquist, director of Fishers Parks & Recreation. “We’re excited
AUGUST 2020
to offer something that is very different from the rest of our parks.” The idea behind the Fishers AgriPark is for visitors to learn firsthand amidst an actual working farm and gain knowledge on farming practices, technology and innovation. There’s a full produce garden as well as livestock, all tended by a full-time farm manager.
“Having actual livestock offers the opportunity to get up close with cows, chickens and sheep to experience a real farm setting,” says Sandquist, adding that the park also includes a nature trail and a play area made out of tractor tires. “We have a full-time coordinator in charge of programming, as well as a full-time farmer who is the manager.” The AgriPark garden includes a large variety of produce like snap peas, sweet corn, beans, squash, cucumber, kale, tomato, kohlrabi, peppers, strawberries and more. Three acres worth of produce was planted this year, and park leaders plan to ramp up the garden size in future years. “We have every kind of herb you could think of,” Sandquist says. “There’s cilantro, parsley and chives. We’re also growing a huge wall of sunflowers, and we’re anticipating having people come out for photo opportunities as well as lots of education around the sunflowers and using the seeds. We’ll be growing pumpkins in the fall, and they got planted in June so they should be ready just in time for October.”
Jackie Leeuw, Agriculture Coordinator
The AgriPark officially opened to the public on July 28, and leading up to the opening celebration, Fishers Parks leaders scheduled volunteers to work at the park two times per week to prep the grounds and garden. “There’s watering, weeding and picking to do, and we’d love to continue having volunteers come out,” Sandquist adds.
Trevor Wildey, Agriculture Manager
Park leaders also built out a five-acre tree nursery in the northwest corner of the park, including 200 trees planted earlier this year. After the trees have grown and are ready to be harvested, Sandquist says the Parks department plans to use them to replace trees in other Fishers parks that have died. “We also will use the trees in our right-ofways, and hope in the future to also offer a neighborhood grant program similar to our existing grant, but for use within residential yards,” Sandquist adds. “Right now, it’s only for right-of-way trees.” Fishers Parks & Recreation leaders plan to direct much of the fruits, veggies and eggs produced at the park toward food-insecure areas, and Sandquist says the department plans to coordinate with the Good Samaritan Network for donation of food surpluses. “We’re still working out quantities so everybody has the opportunity to get some, and the food is available for free pickup,”
Sandquist explains. “We’ve been doing it first-come, first-served and announcing when we have food shares to be picked up. Down the road, I would love to grow food that we can get to the Youth Assistance Program for their summer meals program.” Sandquist says AgriPark leaders will host structured programming beginning in the fall and plan to host a small corn maze at the park, too. “We’ll have a variety of one-day programming, dealing with how the farm translates to your own backyard,” she says. “It will cover growing a salsa garden and canning — the full process from planting the plants to preserving for when it’s not growing season.” Additional programming will include up-close visits with the livestock, which includes a cow named Mudsock. “We ran a fun naming campaign for the community and had several hundred
submissions,” Sandquist says. “There were several entries for Mudsock, and Brownie was another popular entry.” Sandquist says Fishers Parks officials are currently in talks with leaders at Hamilton Southeastern schools to develop a program that will combine classroom work and onsite farm programming. “We hope the program will be looped so you’ll be able to see a full growing cycle starting in the spring and finishing up the following school year in the fall with a harvest,” she says. “We’re excited about the programming that we’re coming up with for the park.” The Fishers AgriPark is located at 11171 Florida Rd. With the first day of school lingering in the not-so-distant future, you’re probably feeling both excited and overwhelmed, especially with COVID-19 casting doubt on just what school will look like for most students and families this year. From creating healthy sleep habits and establishing a good morning routine to handling back-to-school anxiety and learning how to make communication more manageable, we’ve got 10 general back to school tips and tricks for parents to help make this school year a good one for your family! 1. MAKE A COUNTDOWN
school. With this countdown ease into their school routine with bedtime, setting out their clothes for the next day and when they'll be waking up. It'll be hard to stick to those routines while wanting to get in as much fun as you can, but it will help the transition immensely for you and your kids if you start early. 2. POSITIVE ATTITUDE You know that your child will reap the benefits of going to school. Try to keep any anxiety or stress you may have from showing to your child. 3. VISIT THE SCHOOL (IF POSSIBLE)
This is a great practice for young kids Using a calendar, paper chain or whiteboard, starting preschool or Kindergarten. It is start a countdown a couple weeks before equally great for children entering a new AUGUST 2020
school. Map out their classes and let them try out their locker. Park where they will park and walk in, making their first day of school more familiar. 4. MORNING ROUTINE Routine is the key word here. It may take a few weeks or even months to figure out the perfect routine for your family, but once you've got it, stick with it. Write it out or discuss it with your kids to let them know how you'd like to see the morning go. Have them help you figure out what works best for them. 5. EVENING ROUTINE Although morning routines help with the ease into a new day, setting up an evening routine can make that morning routine breeze by. Again, see what works best for
your family. Maybe make a chart or an evening routine clock that shows what things they need to accomplish before lights out. Do as much as you can the night before so the next morning is simple (set out clothes, make lunches, look at the week ahead etc.) 6. GO SCHOOL SHOPPING Head to the store for their favorite foods in their packed lunch. Purchase the necessary school supplies or even a new First Day outfit. Get haircuts. Having a day with them to prepare for the new year ahead will let your kids know you want to make this as easy and as fun as possible for them.
home from school so there is no frustration in the morning to find these items. Make sure they know it's their space and their responsibility to keep their items there. 8. MAKE A CALENDAR Add all of the holidays and school info and hang it where your child can see it. If they join a club or sport, have them write in their games or practice dates and times to let them have a little responsibility over knowing when their time is scheduled. If you have a younger child, use stickers to let them know which days they have games or practices. Starting this habit of letting them schedule their time will help them decide what is too much on their plate.
7. MAKE A DROP ZONE Talk to your child about homework rules and where they should put papers that need to be looked at or signed. Have enough space for each child's backpack, shoes, water bottles or anything else they will be carrying
9. BE PRESENT As tempting as it is to tell our kids they have nothing to worry about as a way to distract them, sometimes the best thing we can do as parents is to simply listen.

If your child is finding school stressful, allow him or her to put their feelings into words so you can figure out exactly what is bothering them and (hopefully) find a solution to their worries. Spend 5 to 10 minutes connecting with each child in the morning or evening routine, with your phone put away. Talk about who they're excited to see or what they're going to do at recess. If they are nervous for the week ahead, brainstorm a family activity for the weekend. 10. OUTSOURCE YOUR TIME Know that it's okay to ask for help. Figure out what is taking up a lot of your time, therefore, keeping you from your family. Is there a way to pay to have it done by someone else? Hire a cleaning service, utilize grocery pick up or delivery, make crock-pot meals, carpool with other parents for practices. There are many ways to simplify if you are able to step back and see what needs to be adjusted.

OLD OAKLAND GOLF CLUB COMPLETES MAJOR RENOVATIONS Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Michael Durr
This summer marks the end of a four-year journey at Old Oakland Golf Club, under the ownership and direction of Lawrence Township native Steve Sterrett, to make major renovations and improvements to the golf course and clubhouse. Sterrett’s own journey at Old Oakland,
however, commenced long before renovations began. He joined the club as a member in the mid-1980s and knows many fellow members. In 2006, Sterrett and his wife, Betty, built a house adjacent to the Old Oakland golf course and 10 years later, when he learned that the club was going to be sold, he saw an opportunity to add value to the club for its members and the community as owner.
Owner Steve Sterrett
“A golf business is a living, breathing thing, and you’ve got to invest in it,” Sterrett says. “Membership and revenues at Old Oakland had declined since the Great Recession in 2008 and 2009. When the family that owned it decided they were interested in selling the club, it made a lot of sense for a member to buy it. I think it’s really cool that I have been able to do all this in my hometown and the community where Betty and I grew up.” After officially taking over as owner of the 27-hole club in the summer of 2016, Sterrett hit the ground running with a renovation of the nine-hole east course, including new cart paths, as well as a new irrigation system and bunkers. “Each of the three nines needed to be
modernized,” Sterrett says. “We added some tee boxes and moved some bunkers. The trick in changing a golf course is to make it harder for the good golfer and easier for the not-so-good golfer. I think we’ve done that.” Sterrett decided to install bunker systems known as Billy Bunkers though out each of the 27 holes at Old Oakland. “The state-of-the-art bunkers are constructed so that when rain falls, they never flood due to the type of sand and the irrigation setup,” says Chase Walden, golf course superintendent. After the east course renovations were complete in April 2017, Sterrett promptly moved forward with renovations to Old
Oakland’s south and west nine-hole courses in the fall of that year. Both the south and west cart paths were also repaved, a couple of streams were rerouted to improve playability, and Sterrett also revamped both courses’ irrigation systems and added Billy Bunkers. After renovations to each nine-hole course were complete, Sterrett built out new chipping and putting practice greens and
a few practice bunkers on the west side of the clubhouse, all of which were open for members in the spring 2019. “It’s really a world-class little area for chipping and putting,” Sterrett says. “We’ve added more than 100 members since I bought the club, and we were busting at the seams size-wise, so adding things like the practice area and everything we’ve done to the clubhouse has been really helpful.” The final phase of renovations began last fall and included a major overhaul and 12,000 square foot expansion of the clubhouse. Members can now enjoy increased dining space and an upscale conference room with a 65-inch television that accommodates up to 24 people.
“The dining/conference area is versatile. It can be used with audiovisual and projection equipment for meetings and events of more than 100 people or be used for a smaller, upscale dinner,” says Sarah Lobe, Membership and Marketing Director. “With the additional dining space, we can host events like our popular couples golf night once a month. We typically have 60 to 100 members who participate, so now we have more room for that type of event.” Old Oakland’s clubhouse kitchen was expanded to keep up with the increased
capacity of the overall dining area. The outdoor patio was also expanded. “In addition, we also built out an area we’re calling the Player’s Lounge, and it will offer high-tops and soft seating where people can hang out and have drinks with the club’s golf memorabilia decorating the walls,” Lobe adds. Renovations did not end there. Two state-of-the-art golf simulator bays were installed in the clubhouse for year-round use. Members can reserve times for the simulators, just as they would for course tee times. A 3,000 square-foot fitness area with cardio and strength equipment, a massage station and a room for a variety of group exercise classes is now available for members. “It’s all brand-new equipment – treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, a Peloton bike and more,” Lobe says. “Steve’s idea behind all this was to turn the club into a 12-month facility, and the fitness center and golf simulators can be used year-round. We’re excited to be able to give our members more to do and to expand our existing amenities.” Old Oakland Golf Club is located at 11611 East 75th Street in Indianapolis. INDIANAPOLIS-BASED ORGANIZATION FOSTERS INDEPENDENT LIVING Writer / Julie Yates Photography Provided
What began as a book club for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) has blossomed into a community for individuals who wish to live independently, yet require supportive services. The Village of Merici, located on the old Fort Benjamin Harris campus in Indianapolis, offers residents an affordable place to call home and a program for community integration. It is named after Angela Merici, the patron saint of those with disabilities.
mission. From the start, book clubs were initiated by the parents who realized that since graduation, their adult children had very few interactions with anyone outside their own families. During this time, many different models were investigated and explored. A plan was developed and the Village of Merici opened as a residential facility in 2014.
The focus of the Village of Merici, 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization, is the premise that individuals want to live in a community where, with support, they are free to make their own decisions about when and The seed for the organization was planted where they choose to participate in an in 2005 when a group of parents came activity. The founding members felt group together to discuss concerns regarding what homes or institutions were too restrictive, would happen to their children with IDD as the goal was to develop a community when family became unavailable to help due of independence and a network of peer to health problems or death. They wanted to friends. A key component of the concept is provide a structure that was affordable and affordability - most individuals with IDD fostered independence, while providing a work part time and typically find it difficult wide range of support. to pay for housing. and TWG Development, who applied for rental housing tax credits through the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA),” says Executive Director Colleen Renie. “Most of the apartments are now identified as Housing Choice units through the Indianapolis Housing Agency. We assess the individual’s needs and resources. IHCDA and Merici Village Apartments reviews and verifies the tenant’s income and sets the apartment rates at 30% of the individual’s income.” Village of Merici has been successful in allowing residents to be independent, and today the facility has a waiting list with more than 200 people. Residents represent a wide range of individuals with differing needs, and many individuals who reside elsewhere also take part in the services offered. Most maintain integrated employment that corresponds to their specific interests. Some need 24-hour care for tasks such as showering, dressing and cooking. One resident, Angie, is in her 30s and is active in Special Olympics. She has lived
independently for more than five years while working at various jobs in Indianapolis. With the help of her coaches, Angie plans meals, goes to the grocery story every Tuesday, and cooks with the ingredients she purchases. Conan and Ashley are a married couple who have lived together at the village since 2015. They met while participating in Project SEARCH, a work training program at Community Hospital North. Conan enjoys running and biking through nearby Fort Harrison State Park. Ashley likes the activates the facility provides, especially the walking club. Lindsey is a nonverbal resident in her late 30s who requires a higher level of support. Her coaches have seen her thrive and grow in an environment where she can make her own activity choices, such as cooking classes and Special Olympics bowling. Through participating in the programs offered at the Village of Merici, she has made a group of friends that enrich her life. “Going onward, we will continue to develop additional affordable housing with partners in the community by working on two additional projects,” Renie says. “We are moving forward with Old Towne Companies and Merchants Affordable Housing in Carmel, and we just completed the purchase of property on Lawton Loop for a second apartment building through a donation from Dan and Betsy Brunette. They have been very generous in wanting to help us go in our next direction.” Renie says the organization helps to facilitate independent choices for those involved. “Residents make life choices based on their needs and interests, not what others decide for them,” Renie says. “Staff, administrators and board members believe that all people can live in a home they choose and control, on their own or with others they select, and can participate in meaningful work and activities, if appropriate supports are offered.” Village of Merici is located at 5707 Lawton Loop East Drive in Indianapolis. FORTVILLE ELEMENTARY STUDENT RESSIE LEMMON IS A GOLF STAR IN THE MAKING

Writer / Seth Johnson Photographer / Amy Payne
Fortville Elementary student Ressie Lemmon has a bright future ahead of her on the golf course. Having already played in tournaments all over the U.S., Ressie recently advanced to the ages 7 through 9 Drive, Chip, & Putt (DCP) National Finals at Augusta, which was moved from this April to next April due to the coronavirus pandemic. In addition to next year’s trip to Augusta, Ressie and her siblings Elijah and Nellie also traveled to Pinehurst, N.C. in late July to compete in the World Championship (with U.S. Kids Golf) for their age group. At a young age, Ressie and her brother were introduced to golf by their grandfather. “My dad, their papaw, is a big golfer,” says Ressie’s mom, April Lemmon. “He got Elijah, Ressie’s older brother, his first set of clubs before he could walk. So, he’s just kind of been the golfing presence around them their entire lives.” After seeing her brother try his hand at the sport, Ressie needed to give it a shot herself. “Once she saw that her brother started playing competitively, she decided she wanted to do that as well,” April says. “She may be our most competitive child.” For Ressie, the game of golf provides a uniquely fun set of challenges, as well as an opportunity for quality time with her family. “I enjoy competing and that every shot isn’t the same — you kind of have to think about them,” Ressie says. “[I also enjoy] playing with my family because then I get to have some family time.” With U.S. Kids Golf, April explains that competitors play on regular golf courses but with age-specific regulations. “It’s age-based and the yardage that they play is based on their age,” April says. “So as they get older, the yardage is increased to make it more of a normal game for them, so atGeist.com / AUGUST 2020 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 37

that you don’t have a 7-year-old teeing off from the white tees.” Ressie, Elijah and their sister Nellie all compete in U.S. Kids Golf tournaments, as well as Indiana Junior Golf competitions. “We, as parents, really like it [Indiana Junior Golf] because they do not have caddies,” April says. “So they have to make all the decisions themselves, which I think helps with growth.” Per son a l T rusts & Estat es Angie Berg, JD

As the mother of many talented golfers, April likes watching her children learn life lessons through the game. “Golf is very unique in that it teaches that hard work does pay off, and Ressie is finding that out,” April says. “But it also shows that you can put in the hard work and sometimes you don’t reap the rewards because that’s just how golf is. So, it’s all these life lessons they’re learning that I think are priceless.” In addition to these life lessons, April cherishes the ways that golf has brought her family even closer together. “We’re always on a golf course, and that’s where they hang out with their papaw,” April says. “So, it’s been really fun because it’s a whole family affair.” In looking ahead, Ressie certainly has some goals for herself.
