Back to School S AND KIDS TIPS AND IDEAS FOR PARENT
Writer / Abigail Hake Photography Provided
Last year was rough, but we made it and I know we are all ready to get back to something resembling our old routines. While some aspects of our lives slowed down with classes and sports being cancelled, other areas ramped up with working from home, having our kids around full time (and never leaving our sides), and playing teacher. Perhaps the most exciting thing about the upcoming school year is that it will likely be fairly close to normal, which means it’s time to prepare and get ready. Here are a few ideas for enjoying back-toschool preparation like it’s meant to be enjoyed.
GET SUPPLIES You deserve a little shopping spree, even if it is for pencils and other school supplies. Don’t give in to the purchasing of supplies that will be boxed and ready for your kids this year. Gather the lists of what they’ll need and make a day out of it. Your kids need to get out and learn how to behave in stores again too, so this would be a fun way to remind them of those manners they used to have, and you can reminisce about all the home-schooling moments from last year at the same time.
BUY REAL CLOTHES As a parent you’ll need these again too, for ice cream socials and parent-teacher conferences, but I’m talking about school clothes for your kids. As much as I hate to admit it, my kids fell into wearing pajamas and/or sweatpants all day too. Head to the mall (yes, they are still there) and let your kids pick out some items that will make
them feel good. Make the experience even more fun by having a try-on session or fashion show when you get home. Create a TikTok or Reels video and you’ll be the cool parent too. It might seem silly and I know most everyone does back-to-school shopping in one form or another, but this year try to make it a little more special.
PREPARE A BACK-TO-SCHOOL BREAKFAST Plan to treat the kids to special breakfast foods before they head out to school on the first day. If you want to enjoy one last long breakfast with them, plan it for the day or weekend before they start. If your kids love doughnuts, you can spice it up by making a doughnut decorating bar with some of their favorite toppings. It’s not that complicated and they’ll love it. You can also take this in another direction, and plan a back-toschool breakfast for you and the other parents on the block, with bagels and mimosas to start as soon as the kids get on the bus. Maybe even bust out the party on the lawn. Let’s be real - we’re excited they are going back, so why not celebrate?
SET A SCHEDULE NOW While I know it’s summer and schedules should be a little more laid back, save yourself the morning drama by implementing the bedtime and wake-up times now. Just do it, before it’s too late and you are screaming at your child to wake up and then running to flag down the bus. They might not like it, but it’s going to help everyone out in the end and make for calm and lovely mornings. No promises that your children will take to said schedule - mine still don’t get it and we are heading into the fourth grade - but it’s worth a shot.
10 / AUGUST 2021
BE PREPARED As much as I hate to say this, buy a couple masks and mentally prepare for anything. We don’t know how this fall will go down, and you don’t want to be the one searching everywhere for masks when they are all gone. Grab a disposable pack now while they are everywhere. Stock up on other things too, like disinfectant wipes for you and the class, hand sanitizer, and Kleenex, so you can be prepared should the available inventory take a dive.
THANK YOUR TEACHERS We are all going to have new teachers in our lives come August, about whom we know very little, but thank them anyway, every time you see them. Thank them for emailing you that your child didn’t behave very well on a certain day. Thank them for sending your sick child to the nurse. Thank them for just being them, and sticking through all this like champs. They really deserve more than thanks, but just keep thanking them and letting them know how appreciated they are. We wish you a wonderful almost-fully-back-to-normal school year!

HEALING WITH THE POWER OF LIGHT SELAND CHIROPRACTIC NAUTICUS WELLNESS CENTER
AUGUST 2021 / 15
Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Hillary Gordon
After a difficult year, it’s time for people to start living well again. Dr. Trond Seland, a seasoned chiropractor who has been practicing since 1994, is the owner of Seland Chiropractic Living Well Center in Fishers. He also owns the suite next door. When the former tenant retired and the space became vacant, Seland thought about how he could best utilize it to be transformative for people’s health and well-being. Last year when COVID-19 hit, a light bulb went off. The mantra of the time was, “We’re all in this boat together.” It was a phrase that didn’t quite resonate with Dr. Seland. “I’m thinking, ‘We’re in the same storm but not in the same boat,’” Seland says. “We each have our own boat, and the question is, ‘Have you conditioned your vessel to get through the storm?’ Because those who have prepared themselves well will get through the storms of life easier.” An avid sailor, he came up with the name Nauticus Laser Therapy & Wellness Center, which opened in January of 2021. By utilizing laser therapy, he heals people with the power of light. He and his team started
feels like they are walking on glass. Many neuropathy patients feel like they have a sock rolled under their foot. Dr. Seland still vividly recalls a chiropractic patient he had three decades ago who suffered with this condition. Though Dr. Seland helped rid the man of his back pain, the patient’s medical neuropathy treatment was failing. Over the course of several months, Seland watched as this man first lost his toes, then his foot, then his lower leg, then his entire leg. He ultimately died of complications from type 2 diabetes. “I’ll never forget what I witnessed that patient go through,” Seland says. “There was no hope.” using laser lights several years ago for joint pain, herniated discs and degenerative discs, and experienced great success. Then the company that made the lasers, Summus Medical Laser, upgraded them with a design aimed specifically at treating neuropathies.
Now THERE IS HOPE, as this Nauticus Neuropathy laser program offers a 90% success rate. Using the healing power of high-power laser light, Dr. Seland and his Team of Expert DCs and staff treat people with peripheral neuropathy. The program includes Summus Medical Laser, therapies and supplementation.

CHOOSING THE PROPER ELDER CARE FACILITY IS VITAL Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided
It’s human nature to want to retain our autonomy, and when asked about preferences regarding late-in-life care, elderly parents often resist the idea of moving into a care facility. Family members may wish their loved one could remain in their home, and yet have lingering worries
that they may fall or have a stroke. Carol Applegate, an attorney with Applegate & Dillman Elder Law, understands these feelings and concerns, which is why her practice helps families navigate elder care. According to Applegate, the first thing to do when choosing a facility is to determine the level of care needed. These levels vary 20 / AUGUST 2021
drastically, from independent living to round-the-clock attention. Independent living consists of cabins, cottages or apartments designed for those who are still autonomous and able to handle daily tasks like cooking and driving. Assisted living is for those who require a bit of help or supervision. These folks can enjoy
Senior Living Guide meals in a cafeteria, then retreat to their own one- or two-bedroom apartments. They can also have access to a nurse if necessary. These people may need reminders for when meals or served, or help with washing their clothes. Skilled or custodial care is 24-hour care from a nurse, and is for patients who are bedridden or in a wheelchair. They often need help bathing, taking medications, and getting to and from therapies. Memory care units are for those struggling with memory issues, and rehabilitation is for anyone who has sustained a fall or injury and requires intense therapy, usually following a hospitalization. “What’s great is to find a continuum-ofcare facility that has all these levels of care on one campus,” Applegate says.
Elegant assisted living at an affordable price.
Be close to the city and close to the grandkids.
Lake Meadows SENIOR ASSISTED LIVING
Not only is this ideal if a patient has to transition from one type of care to the next, but it’s also nice for couples who are at different stages of life. “Think of couples who have been married for 60 years,” Applegate says. “They want to be together at the end of their lives, but their needs are totally different.” When choosing a facility, it’s important to know the costs and whether or not the facility will accept Medicaid. “If you know that in six months or a year you’ll be short on money, you need to find a place that will accept Medicaid when the time comes, because moving an elderly person is really hard on them,” Applegate says. “It’s one thing to move from home to a facility. That becomes their new home and you don’t want to have to uproot them again.” It’s not uncommon for Applegate to see clients in their 90s. One of the biggest common fears is running out of money before dying. She reminds clients that since they paid taxes their whole life, they have earned the right to use government resources.

Senior Living Guide When searching for a facility, Applegate also suggests looking beyond the walls - literally - as pretty painted walls and dynamite decorating don’t always equal the best patient care. “New facilities may be beautiful, but sometimes it’s the older ones who have stable staff that have been there for a long time,” says Applegate, who suggests inquiring about staff turnover, and checking the state board of health for complaints. “If you have an elder law attorney or staff like I have, we are intimately connected to some of the facilities and can answer these questions. We hear what the turnover is in those facilities and when it’s been sold to another company. Those things tell you if there is stability there.” Applegate also suggests choosing a location close to the family that is going to be caring for their loved one. “If mom and dad are clear on the other
side of town, your chances of going to visit decreases,” Applegate says. “I moved my mom to a place that was practically right across the street from me, and it was comforting to her knowing that if she needed something, I could be there in five minutes.” Applegate’s primary piece of advice, however, is to explore facilities early on before you need the service. Visit different places, pick up information, and go on virtual tours. Starting the search process a year or two before you think your folks may need the service can help, because you’ll know what’s available in your community. This can also give parents time to ease into the idea, and to weigh in on where they’ll feel most comfortable living. When Sandy Galyan and her brothers sat down to talk to their mom and dad about shopping around at assisted-living facilities, they weren’t initially open to the idea. Galyan and her brothers backed off. A month or two

later, they all toured a nearby facility. “When we took mom and dad to check it out, their decision was, ‘We’re not ready,’” Galyan recalls. After some time had passed, however, her dad concluded that it was time. “Ultimately, it was their decision and we did not tell them what they had to do,” Galyan says. “We felt it was much better for them, and they did not tell people their kids made them move.” Applegate says making sure parents are part of the decision is crucial to a smooth transition. “They need to feel like they are still in control,” she says. “Making that choice makes them feel worthwhile.” For more info on Applegate & Dillman Elder Law, visit dillmanlawgroup.com.

INDIANA MEDICAID WAIVER PROGRAM AN ALTERNATIVE TO NURSING HOMES Writer / Michael Wilhelm
As an elder law attorney, I am often asked by clients how they can protect assets from potentially substantial long-term care expenses in an institutional setting, such as memory care or custodial skilled nursing. While that conversation can be complex and revolves around many factors, the following
touches on an alternative to nursing homes that continues to grow in popularity. Throughout human history until the second half of the 20th century, most people aged and died at their home or the home of a family member. By the 1980s, only 17% of Americans died at home, as the experience of aging and death in the industrialized 24 / AUGUST 2021
world shifted to hospitals and nursing homes. This dramatic change was caused by many factors including longer life, fewer children, and children with duel-income families (leaving fewer children available to care for aging parents). Even as more and more of our elderly population ages in hospitals and nursing homes, their preference for living at home remains

Henry Community Health (HCH) is a medical facility and integrated health system known for its exceptional care, cutting-edge technology and experienced staff. The center serves patients from nearby areas such as Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville and Westfield, and has been ranked in the top 5% nationwide for patient satisfaction for seven straight years by Healthgrades. One aspect that draws patients to HCH is its distinction as a Center of Excellence for spinal stenosis.
One of the team’s goals, Taylor says, is to treat the condition prior to surgery with the Vertiflex system.

“This outpatient procedure optimizes function and improves the patient’s quality of life, plus it is covered by Medicare. It is a process that opens the spinal canal area by inserting a removable device that is less than an inch long. Patients can walk out of the facility on the very same day, since it is a much less invasive method than traditional surgery,” Taylor says. “A lesser level of anesthesia is required, which lowers the risk for those with underlying conditions. “Many people experience back pain right at retirement time, and it makes enjoying the things they like to do impossible,” Taylor says. “Typical patients have already tried physical therapy, medication and injections. “Most Beautiful” Mosque Opens in Fishers REKAZ HOMES COMPLETES ALHUDA ISLAMIC CENTER OF INDIANA Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Arif Hussain
When Rekaz Homes was entrusted to build the new Alhuda Islamic Center of Indiana, CEO Hossam Wanas, a proud citizen of Fishers, felt compelled to make the mosque into a work of art with architecture that would make the whole city proud. “Having witnessed the rapid rise of Fishers as one of the best cities to live and raise a family with an excellent profile of safety and diversity, the call to action became even more pressing to create a building that showcases all our great city has to offer,” says Wanas, who has worked in the construction industry for many years starting from his home in Alexandria, Egypt and continuing in Fishers, Indiana. Wanas envisioned erecting a mosque that would be the most beautiful in the country, and one that complements the city’s futuristic vision. Therefore, he actively participated in the initial exterior and interior design, consulting with master builders, designers and craftsmen in Egypt and traveling to conventions around the world to learn about the best materials that could be used for the project, all while being
mindful of cost. “The challenge was obvious as we already have exquisite mosques in the United States such as the Diyanet Center of America in Maryland and the Islamic Center of Washington, D.C.,” Wanas says. He recognized that it would be difficult to execute a similar project, due to the larger space and budgets that the leaders of those projects enjoyed. “These buildings were inspired by architecture from the Ottoman Empire dating back to the 14th century and influenced by Byzantine architecture, combining a blend of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern history,” Wanas says. “Therefore, my direction to help this mosque be most unique was to choose a concept of design focused on modern Islamic architecture.” As a result, the mosque is the only one in the U.S. that uses these elements, making it truly one of a kind. Combining the rich elements of Islamic history with contemporary building design, modern Islamic architecture incorporates the use of modern-day building materials including 30 / AUGUST 2021
glass, fiberglass, copper, gold leaf, porcelain floors, marble, granite, and vivid colors such as white, blue and gold, all while maintaining the fundamental structural appearance of a mosque complete with domes, minarets and Islamic art. “This approach allowed us to build an iconic structure that mirrors the vibrance exhibited throughout the City of Fishers while staying true to a budget set forth by the donations of community members,” Wanas says. The project, which took three years to complete, is a 40,000-square-foot structure with a distinctive exterior and an interior that merges open areas, natural light and highquality finishes to achieve the final product. In early August 2020, Wanas started taking multiple groups of community members on tours through the building and during various stages of the construction process. Each time the people were left awestruck at the beauty of his intricate creation. All the positive feedback made Wanas strive to make sure this project was nothing but amazing. Alhuda Islamic Center is located at 12201 Lantern Road in Fishers.
ENTRANCE AND GATHERING AREA A special focus was on creating an open space, mimicking the Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi, and further accentuated by light colors that echo the exterior design to give a visually smooth transition upon entering the mosque. The materials were carefully chosen, and include porcelain tiles from Italy and a handmade Islamic mosaic from Spain. Brass accents were used throughout to tie the design elements together. The entrance to the prayer area is covered in the Brazilian Taj Mahal granite and is crowned with Islamic art inspired by the Cologne Mosque in Germany.
“ I can't tell you how excited we are to have this facility here in our community. They truly have built an iconic facility here in the City of Fishers and something the entire community can and should be proud of.” —Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness (left) pictured here with Hossam Wanas, owner of Rekaz Homes ISLAMIC ART The smaller 14’ domes are inspired by the domes in Masjid anNabawi in Medina. The main dome, which is 28’ in diameter, is unique and displays select Quranic verses. The semicircular wall niche denoting the direction of Mecca. Hancock also provided artwork for windows, wall patterns (for the carpenters), gilded one 20-foot arched entry ceiling and the 4-foot tall border atop the gymnasium.
LIGHTING AND CHANDELIERS All of the chandeliers were custom built by master crafters in Egypt. Made from copper and gold plated with 18-karat gold, the chandeliers hanging from the smaller domes are 7’ in diameter and weigh 600 pounds each, inspired by those of the Sayeda Zainab Mosque in Cairo, Egypt. The main dome chandelier is made from the same materials, and is 14’ wide and 1,200 pounds. It is inspired by that of the Masjid an-Nabawi in Medina. In addition, 30 pendants and wall lights complete the overall design.

ADEL NADA AND SHERIF ATTALLAH (Left to right) Adel Nada was one of the driving forces behind the successful completion of the construction. From his role as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees to his title of Trustee Liaison to the Construction Committee, Nada’s input could be seen in nearly every aspect of the process. Super-human energy, eternal optimism and his unique ability to bring people to the table were instrumental at every stage of development. Nada’s credibility in the community made him the natural selection to lead the fundraising effort. These donations allowed the project to be completed without the need for any loans. And to top it off, he could not be a more friendly, humble and helpful person. Sherif Attallah (right) was head of the construction committee. A volunteer himself who managed a team of volunteers, he was able to devote hundreds of hours to oversee the project. Known for his calm demeanor and professionalism, he commanded the respect of everyone involved as his dedication and drive to complete the dream of the congregation was evident at every turn.
MAIN PRAYER HALL (MUSALLA) This is the main prayer area totaling 13,000 square feet with a soaring 28’ ceiling. The floors are covered in fine Turkish carpet with a thread density of 1.1 million points per square meter. The woodwork was carried out by the finest carpenters in Indiana, assembling over 1,000 detailed wood pieces. The columns are octagonal and are encased in fine Brazilian granite known as Taj Mahal. A Quranic verse adorns this space that was crafted in Indonesia using mahogany wood and was assembled by an expert in Chicago.
RESTROOMS AND LAVATORIES (ABLUTION WASH AREAS) A characteristic design incorporates porcelain and mosaics, further defined by the use of indirect lighting to highlight the golden faucets, stone handles and golden beveled mirrors.
GYM A professional-grade gym with triple-layer flooring, bleachers and state-of-the-art equipment.
FATUMAH INTERFAITH ROOM This room is named in loving memory of the young Fatima Hassuneh, who passed away in a tragic traffic accident in 2017 at 18 years old. She was known for her kindness, good manners and passionate participation in interfaith activities. This room is to be used as a safe, welcoming space for people of all faiths to foster education, compassion and peaceful coexistence. It is the only room which contains a rare marble wall etched with a golden color pattern, and an inner dome decorated with a spectacular pattern. It houses a state-of-the-art audiovisual system through which remote meetings can be conducted. 32 / AUGUST 2021
COMMUNITY AND VOLUNTEER WORK The community has so much to give. This small army of volunteers, under the direction of Judy Aljabi Nahlawi, who took the initiative and lead the effort, was able to help cut costs so the funds could go to more needed areas. Countless hours of working on Gold Leaf ceilings, stenciling patterns on walls, and cleaning were put in to insure the mosque would be ready for the grand opening.

The Fort Ben Farmers Market is back for the summer season. The market runs every first Thursday now through October at the Lawrence Civic Plaza. “We have anywhere from 15 to 20 vendors each week,” says Mandy Wright-Jarrett, director. “Our market is a SNAP-approved market, which means we accept EBT and P-EBT. Because of that, we’re a predominately food-based market. Our TownePost.com / AUGUST 2021 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 33

Next year, Civic Plaza is getting a complete overhaul and will be redone.” The Fort Ben Farmers Market provides a matching program for the Hoosier Works card.

“People can come use their cards to purchase food at the market, and then we will match it with the Fresh Bucks program through the Marion County Health Department,” Wright-Jarrett says. “We love this program because it’s a fullcircle program. It not only benefits the folks with the cards, but it also benefits our local growers and farmers. It increases their sales with the local community, and it’s increasing the buying power for the people in this community.” Each week a different community organization is present at the market to offer information.

“We have Women, Infants and Children coming one week to hand out vouchers,” Wright-Jarrett says. “One week we will have the Lawrence Police Department on hand to do some community outreach. Maddie Smiles shows up from time to time, to set up craft stations for the kids attending the market. We always have a big area for hula hooping and drawing.”
“We try to focus on being bilingual because of the diversity of people who live in Lawrence,” Wright-Jarrett says. “It’s a smaller market, so we can focus on bringing everyone together. We have a nice, steady flow of people each week. We would love to see other markets do the same by making their markets more accessible. Historically, markets have catered to people of privilege, and that’s not how it should be. We’re trying very hard to make the markets more accessible for everyone.”

“We were open but super restricted last year,” Wright-Jarrett says. “We’re so lucky our audience still came out to support us. We encourage everyone to come do some outdoor shopping at our market.” For more information, visit facebook. com/FortBenFarmersMarket.

PAVER RESCUE 9386 Castlegate Drive Indianapolis, IN 317-259-4880 paverrescue.com
Writer / Renee Larr Photographer / Kerch Creative
Paver Rescue is helping homeowners “Love Their Patio Again.” “We take old broken or dirty pavers and make them look like new again,” says Robert Frankel, General Manager. Paver Rescue specializes in the repair, restoration and maintenance of pavers and concrete used in outdoor living spaces such as patios, walkways and driveways. Time and Mother Nature can take a toll on these surfaces and Paver Rescue can bring back the original luster and color of your beautifully designed installations through cleaning, re-sanding and sealing.
PAVER RESCUE
Paver Rescue was founded in 2011 by hardscape installation specialists that recognized the need for professional services to repair and maintain existing paver and concrete surfaces. “Our trained, certified professional team recommends the best possible solution to achieve a superior outcome,” Frankel says. “Our process eliminates unwanted yearly maintenance and protects your investment, allowing clients to enjoy their outdoor space or settled pavers. Step two is a thorough cleaning of the surface using a highyear after year.” pressured sprayer with heated water and necessary chemical cleaners reducing dirt The complete Paver Rescue process is and grime build-up on the paver surface. performed in four steps. surface filling in any joints for stability eliminating any gaps that may trap dirt and debris. Step four is the application of the appropriate sealant tailored to your particular surface. “Clients are proud of their investment when we are done and become the envy of their neighbors,” Frankel adds. “A significant number of our projects come from word-of-mouth from our client’s neighbors.” Many weekend warriors may not realize that they could be doing more harm than good if they attempt to clean paver surfaces with a power washer. Using too much pressure and inappropriate cleaning solution can cause permanent damage to the surface leaving the pavers exposed and highly susceptible to the elements, the result of which is dirty, dull, chipped and cracked pavers. This damage can detract from the beauty of the installation and adversely impact the value of their investment. A highly successful component of the Paver Rescue business is its annual maintenance program known as Pete’s Service Program. This membership program extends annual cleaning and inspection services to the members and extends a stated discount on services not covered by the program. This provides members peace of mind knowing that their outdoor investment will be properly maintained for their outdoor enjoyment. Frankel says the team at Paver Rescue lives by its motto: “We won’t rest until every paver is repaired, cleaned and sealed.”
