PICKING TREASURES AT SECOND STORIES: MOTHERDAUGHTER DUO TURN VACANT MCCORDSVILLE BUILDING INTO ANTIQUE SHOP

Last May, mother-daughter duo Angie Cornelius and Aimee Ector were out doing what they love, antique shopping, when they stumbled upon a beautiful old vacant building for sale in McCordsville. Built in 1900, the 2-story, 8,400-square-foot former warehouse seemed an ideal location for the vintage aficionados to open up an antique mall. The pair who, for the past eight years, have sold their merchandise at booths, festivals and flea markets, had always dreamed of running their own place.

O n e S t op P et S hop PAWS STOP PET FOOD & SUPPLIES OPENS NEW LOCATION

Writer / Matt Keating Photographer / Amy Payne

Paws Stop Pet Food & Supplies recently moved into a new building at 8909 Pendleton Pike, Indianapolis, much to the delight of its customers. Owner David Moore says the new store is just 450 yards west of its old spot on Pendleton Pike. “We are about a quarter of a mile west of our previous location, just west of Post Road,” Moore says. “We moved into the new building on April 24, and the feedback from our customers has been overwhelming. They just love the unique, new shopping experience, we are so appreciative of

their kind words. They love how easy it is to find what they want and are surprised by all the options.” Before it was Paws Stop, the business was called Feed Mart when it opened more than 27 years ago. In 1999, it became Specialty Pet Food and in 2010, Paws Stop. “The business was originally more of a feed store,” Moore says. “We also carried dog food and wild bird seed, but it was primarily feed, which we still sell. For a long time, the store was the number one seller of ostrich food, which was supposed to take off as a popular meal. It didn't.” Farm fresh eggs, however, are becoming increasingly popular, according to Moore. 10 / GEIST MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2017 / atGeist.com

“Customers are buying more chickens in the city to get fresh eggs,” Moore says. “We still carry feed for chickens, horses, pigeons and mini pigs. The remnants of the old business remain.” Moore loves talking to pet lovers and greets them with enthusiasm as soon as they walk in the door. “We have the largest variety of pet food in central Indiana,” Moore says. “We have 45 brands and numerous formulas. Many foods that are hard to find and a variety of diets many pet lovers see for the first time. That wide selection and our knowledge has made us popular with pet lovers.” Paws Stop carries a huge selection of wild

bird feeders and seeds. They buy their seeds and seed mixes from family-owned businesses, and the custom seed mixes are triple cleaned. If you are an outdoor bird lover you must come in and see the many choices available and the values provided every day. Paws Stop’s motto is, “We help pet lovers improve the nutrition and health of their pets.” It's a motto Moore and his staff adhere to. They want to make a positive difference in the lives of pets. “We have helped a lot of dogs with bad hip and joints, skin issues, allergies and digestive problems, by changing their diet to the right food,” Moore says. “Pet own-

ers can do these things affordably without medications. A lot of veterinarians recommend us. Our knowledge of the pet foods we sell here is very extensive. We want our customers to be informed pet parents so they actually know what they are feeding their furry family members.” Taking care of your pet’s nutrition and dental care are the best two things you can do for your dog or cat, according to Moore. Paws Stop has holistic, natural, organic, grain free and raw diets. They also have many formulas that solve a variety of health and wellness concerns. Skin and coat supplements, oral and dental care products, digestive wellness and hip and joint health products are also available. atGeist.com / SEPTEMBER 2017 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 11

“You can feed your pets better at a lower cost than most think,” Moore says. “Many pet lovers buy food based on the cost per pound instead of looking at the cost to feed. We have had the same staff for the last four years and they have been able to make a difference in the lives of so many pets. They receive a lot of food training, and they really can answer your questions.” Moore added that there are a lot of misconceptions on pet food bags. “We educate our pet lovers so they know what they are really feeding,” Moore says. “That’s where our team is so beneficial. We really want to inform customers. Pets are such a wonderful part of our lives. We feel very fortunate to be able to make a difference.

A NEW TAXMAN IN TOWN TAXMAN BRASSERIE & TAP ROOM OPENS IN FORTVILLE The highly anticipated new Taxman Brasserie & Tap Room in Fortville celebrated its grand opening on August 11, to an enthusiastic response from both its long-time fans and the Fortville community. Taxman Brasserie & Tap Room, 29 S. Main St., Fortville, has already gathered a large following of loyal customers and new friends. The new location is fully committed to artfully pairing the highest quality local ingredients with house-made craft beers, wine and cocktails. Taxman Brewing Company, which is celebrating the third anniversary of its Bargersville location this month, is excited to have a new location on the north side of Indianapolis.

from guests from Fishers, Carmel and the Geist area. Many of our customers have told us they enjoy our Bargersville location but are thrilled to have a new Taxman closer to home. “Both towns have a warm and unique vibe,” Leah adds. “We love the small-town feel and getting to know everyone in the local community.” Leah added that the new Taxman has a lot of the same industrial modern design elements but with some new looks and features. “It’s a good combination of new and comfortable,” Leah says. “We partnered with a lot of local business for the renovation of the interior. Most of the steel in the restaurant was fabricated in Fortville, the barn wood was sourced from a local barn, and Desco did all the floor finishings.”

“The Fortville community has been wonderful,” says Leah Huelsebusch, co-owner and COO of Retail Operations. “We have also had a lot of support

One thing that hasn’t changed is the great tasting beer, food and drinks. Taxman Brewing Company is known far and wide for its quality, having won a bronze medal at the 2015 Great American Beer Fest in Denver, Colorado. Taxman’s beers can be found in numerous bars, restaurants and retail locations. Taxman has an extensive variety of Belgian inspired beers, some of which are classic Belgian styles, while others have a decidedly American slant. “Guests will be able to find their favorite Taxman house beers on tap, as well as seasonal, barrel aged and specialty beers,” Leah says. Taxman Fortville offers wine and cocktails, in addition to 16 Taxman beers on tap (as well as a can and bottle list). Craft cocktails include Al Capunch, a fruity, vodka drink with orange, strawberry and white Vermouth, The Auditor, Taxman’s take on an Old Fashioned, Belgian 75, a genever cocktail topped with a splash of Tax-

man’s Golden Parachute blonde ale, Offshore Holdings, a vacation inspired rum drink featuring local 8th Day spirits, and, of course, a Tax Mule, a fun pear-infused take on the Moscow Mule. The food at Fortville Taxman is just as outstanding as the Bargersville location. The culinary team, with Chef Ryan Kernodle at the helm, offers globally inspired localized cuisine that showcases ingredients sourced from artisans and farmers from around the region. The seasonally evolving menus feature fresh interpretations on familiar favorites built on a foundation of classic culinary techniques and local flora and fauna. Brunch, offered on Sunday until 3 p.m, includes savory items such as Croque Madame, with a liege waffle, ham, two eggs, Swiss, peach chutney and hollandaise, a Salmon Benedict, with a liege waffle, grilled salmon, fried green tomato, poached eggs and hollandaise, a Chuck & Brisket Burger with cheddar, shredded potato, lettuce and caramelized corn 1000 island, and biscuits and gravy, among other entrees. A FAMILY AFFAIR Taxman is a family-run business. Leah’s husband, Nathan, is the President and CEO. Her sister-in law, Kirby McCloy, is the Chief Financial Officer, while her brother-in-law, Colin McCloy, is the Vice President of Brewing Operations. Taxman Brewing Company began as a way for the Huelsebus-

ch’s and their business partners to share their interest in beer and food with their local community. Nathan and Leah lived in Belgium for almost three years and enjoyed how the small country had several thousands of different beers and hundreds of community-based breweries. “Many of the small towns we visited in Belgium had a brewery or a local restaurant that served as the gathering place for the community,” Nathan says. “This was our vision when we opened Taxman in Bargersville. We wanted it to be a place where people could come together, meet their neighbors and connect.” Nathan and Leah met one of Taxman Brewing Company’s co-founders in Belgium, and they began investigating and enjoying the extensive variety of local beer options. Nathan claims the name of the brewery, Taxman, came about because tax consulting work took them to Belgium and "Three of Taxman's founders are, in fact, tax professionals," he says. Taxman's skull and bowtie logo is inspired by Benjamin Franklin's quote, "In this world, nothing can be said to be certain, except Death and Taxes.” Taxman Fortville is opened Sundays 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., closed on Mondays, open Tuesday through Friday 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturdays 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Give them a call at 317-482-1272 or visit them online at taxmanbrewingcompany.com.

GET READY FOR TASTEFUL TIMES

LOCAL COMPANY PACKAGES GOURMET FOOD & WINE Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Jamie Sangar

Not surprisingly, the idea for family-owned Tasteful Times Gourmet Food & Wine Shop was born out of an evening involving family, food and wine.

This includes mostly Indiana products and especially local vendors, such as Best Chocolate in Town, Just Pop in Popcorn, Salt Sister Rubs, B.Happy Peanut Butter, Best Boy & Co., Capriole Goat Cheese and Tulip Tree Creamery, to name a few. “We try to puff up local businesses,” says Sadler, noting that they carry more than 500 types of wine as well as craft beer selection centered around local breweries. In addition, they’ve expanded their accessory collection.

“I was sitting around one night with my parents drinking wine and shooting the breeze when this idea emerged to open a neighborhood food and wine market,” says Jon Sadler. “The next morning, we looked at each other and asked, ‘Wait. Were we serious “We have Moscow mule mugs, which are really popular,” Sadler or was that the alcohol talking?’” says. “So are picnic stix, which folks use to keep their glassware secure when they go to Symphony on the Prairie and other They took the leap and have been hopping ever since. outdoor venues.” “When we started seven years ago, we sold a little bit of everything, but we’ve slowly expanded while consolidating, meaning that now we offer items our customers tell us they want,” Sadler says.

One of their most popular sellers are the gourmet gift baskets, which attract both individual and corporate customers.

GEIST/FISHERS MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2017

“We work with realtors, home builders and lending companies who ask us to assemble unique food or wine baskets for clients at closings,” Sadler says. “We also get, for instance, chiropractors who run VIP specials and want us to create baskets to distribute to their top customers.” They deliver within a 10-mile radius and also offer discounts for corporate accounts who do repeated business throughout the year. The company sells a lot of “open and consume” baskets with snack items, such as chocolates, trail mix, beef jerky and chips & salsa, as well as breakfast baskets that include pancake mix, syrups and jellies. High-end wine baskets are also popular. Prices vary widely, depending on the consumer’s needs and budget, though the average cost of a basket is $50-$100. “It’s not unusual for a customer to call and say, ‘I want to send an Italian-themed basket. My budget is $100,’ or ‘I want to include two bottles of wine and keep it at $75,’” Sadler says. “We then build custom baskets based on their vision and finances.” Visit tastefultimesindy.com for more information or give them a call at 317-436-8226.

ONLINE BOUTIQUE HAS STYLE FOR EVERY FASHIONISTA Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger Photographer / Jamie Sangar

There’s a new online style hotspot that’s catching the eye of fashionistas everywhere. Going live on May 30 this year, Fair Everly Boutique is already enjoying steady sales. With dozens of fabulous frocks, trendy tops, spunky slacks, shoes, accessories and more, you’ll find the perfect outfit to fit your style. Online sales are hot these days, so it makes sense that owner Jodi Shannahan chose to open her boutique online. Although there are some who object to online clothes shopping saying they prefer to try the clothes on in person, Fair Everly capitalizes on an aspect of the shopping experience that all customers want more of.

“Our online community helps us connect with our customers and give them highly personalized customer service,” Shannahan says. “Most brick and mortar stores don’t offer that.” Like most boutique shops, Fair Everly offers great pieces priced at a great value. Most importantly, they sell unique items for customers who want to find something that no one else will be wearing. “I want to work with people and help them find great things that make them feel good about themselves,” Shannahan says. Although Shannahan opened Fair Everly just a few months ago, boutiques and fashion have always been a part of her world. She grew up in Gas City, about GEIST/FISHERS MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2017

As an adult, everything Shannahan has done has put her on a path leading straight to opening her own boutique. She earned a degree in apparel merchandising, she worked in a law firm, worked in cosmetics at Nordstrom, and she started a career in real estate sales. At each juncture, Shannahan grew her already tremendous business acumen and fed her adventurous side. As time went on, her dream to open her own boutique never faded. She put a business plan together, applied for loans, and pursuing everything necessary twice to make her dream of opening a boutique

a reality. But each time, something got in the way, putting a halt on her plans. Finally, Shannahan had enough capital to get started. “I didn’t get discouraged,” she says. “When it didn’t work out at first, I knew it was God’s plan for me to wait, to observe and learn more before I’m ready.” Shannahan worked hard to be ready, planning her website, creating a budget, selecting inventory, creating ads and doing plenty of promotion on social media. “But mostly I prayed a lot,” she adds. As Shannahan’s dream started becoming a reality, she kept dreaming bigger. In addition to having aspirations of becoming a national brand one day, she needed a warehouse for the inventory. For now, Shannahan has started off simple. She and her husband cleared a big space in their basement for the warehouse. Now that it’s go time, Shannahan says she’s taking it one day at a time. “I’m led by faith, and I’m leading by example,” she says. “I love fashion and I feed off it. I want people to feel safe to share with me and feel safe in what they wear.” Shannahan encourages her customers to have fun when building their wardrobe. “Buy staples and accessories,” she says. “Buy that cute top and take your outfit to the next level. No matter whether you’re traditional and classic or modern and trendy, you can be brave by adding one piece to your outfit to create something new for any occasion. Many people have shared with me that they aren’t into fashion because of their body style. But I can help find the outfit that works for you. Everybody’s different, and we should celebrate that. How boring would it be if we all looked alike? There’s a fashionista in all of us.” Be your own trendsetter. Check out faireverly.com and stock up with the latest styles.

WHAT HAPPENED TO GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP? FORMER HIGH SCHOOL, COLLEGE AND PRO REFS SAY IT’S GETTING WORSE Writer / Matt Roberts Photographer / Brian Brosmer

In 2015, two high school football players in Texas attacked a referee during a game, with one of them knocking him to the ground and the other spearing him in the back with his helmet. A coach later admitted ordering the attack due to “bad calls”. Last year in Beech Grove, a youth football coach was arrested for assaulting a referee during a game between two teams of second-graders. For as long as there have been competitive sports, fans, coaches and players have criticized officials. But there is

a growing sense that anger at bad — or even just adverse — calls has slipped the leash and mutated into abuse and, in some cases, violence. Chris Purvis is a seasoned lacrosse official who sits on the board of the Indiana Lacrosse Officials Association. “Sportsmanship has absolutely gotten worse,” he says. “What’s really alarming to me is the behavior of young players. They’re disrespectful not only to officials, but to their opponents. Kids will make an obvious foul, and they’re throwing up their hands, like ‘Are you kidding me?’ Meanwhile, the TownePost.com / SEPTEMBER 2017 / INDY METRO

coach isn’t reinforcing what they did wrong. He’s saying the official was wrong, so that just perpetuates the behavior.” Purvis says that summer travel league tournaments are even worse. “I worked a summer game this year where parents were literally fighting in the stands, and the police were called,” Purvis says. “For a contest between eight-year-olds. We’ve lost a lot of officials who just say, ‘I don’t need this.’" While participation in youth sports is exploding, the pool of qualified officials is

decreasing. The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) estimates that for every 10 new officials, only two will sign up for a third season. A dwindling roster of officials means a constant struggle to staff games. Mark Baltz has spent the past 50 years officiating at every level, from high school and college basketball and football to 25 years as an NFL head linesman.

“I mean, would you (become a referee)?” Baltz says. “Put in all this time, buy the equipment, do the study, and go to (officials’) meetings, for 50 bucks a game? Outdoor Lighting

And the problem only gets worse at more intense competition for higher stakes. Baltz recalls a recent sectional game he watched.

“Youth leagues and their legal people are insisting that the officials be licensed,” Baltz adds. “So, it’s supply and demand. They’re getting young kids licensed, but that doesn’t mean they know what they’re doing. They have no experience, but they’re out there doing youth league games with two officials watching two teams of 11. It’s impossible.”

“A fight broke out on the floor,” he says. “Parents started jumping in from the stands. Security did a great job, and it could have been a lot worse, but it was a large school sectional between traditional rivals, and some of the officials only had

three or four years of tournament experience. If you haven’t worked that type of game, you’re going to be overwhelmed.” In April of this year, NFHS embarked on a national recruitment campaign focused on encouraging high school athletes to stay involved in sports by getting their officiating license. But most areas of the country have continued to see a reduction in the number of people willing to put on a striped shirt. More than 20 states have found it necessary to enact criminal penalties against fans who attack referees. In Kentucky, it's now a Class D felony to “intentionally cause or attempt to cause physical injury to a sports official.” Similar legislation was proposed in Indiana but has yet to be passed. Some leagues have addressed the sportsmanship deficit by increasing the severity of penalties for bad behavior. Indianapolis Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) has imposed a policy of disqualification for players or coaches on the first technical foul for high school games. Maybe the problem is rooted in the overall coarsening of public behavior or the general lack of tolerance in society. “I think it’s the pressure,” Purvis says. “Pressure on players and pressure on parents. Everybody wants their kid to be a Division I star.”

BUTTERFLY BLAST Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing

“How did you spot the trap? Thompson asked.

In 1971, Carmel resident James Thompson was in Vietnam where he was assigned as an advisor to the field maintenance unit of the Vietnamese Air Force division. The Chinook helicopter rotor blades were made of a composite sandwich material that was a fiberglass over a honeycomb and it had the bad habit of unbonding. Though they had a test set to check for issues, it often went on the fritz. One day, Thompson was tasked with finding a helicopter pilot to fly the test set from Bien Hoa Air Base to the Army’s depot ship at Vung Tau for repairs.

“It’s an old VC trick in which they set up butterflies,” the pilot explained, using his hands to imitate the broad wings of a butterfly. “They’re the size of two ping-pong paddles and painted to blend in with the grass. When the rotor downwash hits them, they collapse like this.” He moved his palms from a spread-out position to a praying pose. “That sets off Claymore mines all around the landing zone that detonate horizontally, making mincemeat out of a Huey and everyone inside it.”

“I located a seasoned army pilot on his third tour in Vietnam,” Thompson says. On their way back from Vung Tau, they got a radio call asking if they could pick up an American chaplain and drop him at a leper colony to distribute food and clothing. They agreed, so after dropping off cargo for the Vietnam Air Force, they picked up the chaplain and two security guards. “I’d brought along my camera and was snapping photos of the lush, green countryside,” recalls Thompson, who grew suspicious as they approached the leper colony and didn’t see a soul in sight. “It seemed odd since usually a mob of people is waiting to swarm the chopper to receive the precious cargo.”

“You clearly saved our bacon today,” said Thompson, who had a wife and two young daughters back home. It seems it was radio communication that gave the Viet Cong the chance to set the trap. “The VC listened on every frequency, so when they heard that we were going to drop off the test set and pick up the chaplain and his supplies, that gave them plenty of time to set up the mines,” says Thompson, who was in Vietnam for just one year. During that year, he got shot at a handful of times, always when he was in a chopper. “They were lousy shots. They always hit the tail rotor,” Thompson says. “The near-landing at the leper colony was the only time I ever was in real peril over there.”

As they were letting down, suddenly the pilot pulled up on the collective control so violently that it threw the chaplain and his guards to the floor. Thompson reflexively reached to grab one of the Despite the peril, Thompson says he enjoyed his tour in Vietnam. guard’s M-16 rifles from flying out the open side door. “I grew to really like the Vietnamese,” Thompson says. “They’re “What was that about?” Thompson called to the pilot on his headset. clever, wonderful, industrious people.” “The landing zone was mined,” the pilot responded. The close brush with death left Thompson shaky, though even as they returned to Bien Hoa he thought, “Hey, this is a war zone. This kind of thing is expected.”

Thompson, who was raised in Indianapolis, attended Arsenal Tech High School, and received a degree in aeronautical engineering from Purdue, served 23 years in the Air Force before retiring as a lieutenant colonel in 1980.

Invigorate your lawn in the fall with Total Lawn Care. TLC has great season grasses in central Indiana, and the plant naturally develops its root system and stores energy in the fall and early winter. Turf care in the fall sets up the lawn for the next season. Proper fall fertility helps the turf plant recover from the summer stress and store energy in its root system over winter. This allows for a healthier, greener lawn in the spring. We have heavy clay soils throughout central Indiana. Fall is a great time to aerate, over seed or add an organic boost. The aeration allows for soil movement to relieve compaction in your clay soils and to increase macropores in the soil. Fall is also the best time to do any seeding in your lawn and to develop your turf for the coming year. An organic boost can help with building the soil by developing organic matter in the soil. Increased organic matter helps provide the nutrients required by the turf and helps build sustainability of the lawn. A quality weed control in the fall helps reduce the weed population in the spring. Visit Total Lawn Care online at tlcindy.com for additional information.

RENDITIONS FINE ART, FRAMING & PHOTOGRAPHY PRESERVES LOCAL ARTWORK

Writer / Kara Kavensky Photography provided by Ron Wise

Ron Wise has been a professional photographer since 1986. He shoots weddings, senior portraits, magazines and other publications, corporate events and continues this work in addition to owning Renditions Fine Art, Framing & Photography.

“A few years before owning Renditions, I sadly did not print a lot of my personal shots due to the difficulty of the process,” says Wise, who worked in publishing for more than 20 years doing layout and design as a complement to his photography work. “There is something tremendously rewarding seeing your work on display, instead of just on the internet.” 34 / GEIST MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2017 / atGeist.com

Photography contests, shows and openings all require professionally framed work. Wise is the featured photographer at M10 Studios on Mass Ave. He also has his photography showcased in the Courtyard by Marriott downtown, the Starbucks on 96th Street near Sam’s Club and at a hotel in California. “There are benefits of the archival process,

framing and proper ways to treat a print,” Wise says. “The new population is into digital photography and haven’t printed much. Painters paint, and photographers, most of the time, place something up on the web but it may not be the best method long term. My advice is to print that artifact.” Wise’s wife Diane is also a professional photographer by trade, using it as more of a part-time job, while her children were small, before returning to a career in finance. With both of their backgrounds from behind the lens, they knew the shop, Renditions, was a good fit.

FALL SPECIALS

“Renditions has typically carried prints of national artists,” Diane says. “We have transitioned to promoting commissioned work of local artists for sale and offering our gallery for events.” The events include education and classes for a photography club, painting classes, private showings and other artrelated events.

Renditions opened in 1974, providing Ron and Diane with a wonderful, experienced team that they inherited when they bought the shop a couple years ago. The team all loves what they do and it shows. For example, their designer, Mary, has been with the shop more than 20 years and has a degree in art history. “Mary knows design and the customers love her,” Diane says. “She possesses an amazing, natural talent to design around a piece of art or photography when she frames it.”

MOTHER-DAUGHTER DUO TURN VACANT MCCORDSVILLE BUILDING INTO ANTIQUE SHOP Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Jamie Sangar

“We are pickers at heart and can’t drive past a garage sale, estate sale, or Goodwill without jumping out of the car and searching for treasures,” Cornelius says. “But we had accumulated so much that we had to either open a store or move into bigger homes.”

The women purchased the property in mid-May and immediately got to work on refurbishing it. Though the building is rich with history (the basement has a full bar, begging the question, “Was this once a speakeasy?”), a 100-year-old structure meant a great deal of work. “It needed a lot of attention,” Cornelius says. “The basement flooded. We had mold. The steps were crooked. Sometimes I was like, ‘What the heck is that? Oh, that’s how they used to do the wiring.’ That’s the challenge — making it a safe, beautiful environment.”

lime green,” Ector says. “It’s eye-catching, for sure. People driving by point and stare, so we think they are either shocked and horrified or intrigued and excited. But seriously, we’ve gotten a lot of compliments on what we’ve done.” Business-wise, they are already off and running, having booked up every inch of first-floor vendor space within four days. The upstairs holds an additional 35-40 vendors.

Thankfully, Cornelius’ son is a carpenter, so he helped a great deal. The women also gave the building a full face lift by putting a fresh coat of pale aqua blue paint indoors as well as a punch of vivid color on the exterior.

The mall will sell everything from jewelry to furniture to Mid-century modern to true antiques and collectibles. They also have a number of local artists, including Lisa Rader (organic ceramics), Chad Leathers (wood furniture), Carol Thompson (photography), and Terry Cole-Rodgers (jewelry).

“We’re both beach girls, so we took a risk and painted the front porch coral, aqua and

the 30s, 40s and 50s,” Ector says. “We have garden items on the front porch, tons of hand-made jewelry, two full boutiques of clothing. It’s going to be lovely shopping.” The women selected the name Second Stories for their store because they feel that all of these refurbished pieces are given a second story, a second chance, a second life. Plus, every piece has a story behind it. For example, they’ll buy a dresser and open it up to find little dots of nail polish or glitter inside with a name carved in it.

In a world of change, our focus is steadfast.

This mother-daughter team has their own stories as well. For instance, a couple of years ago, they rented a truck and participated in the Route 127 Corridor Sale that starts in Michigan and extends down to Alabama. “We came back with so much stuff hanging off the truck that we looked like the Clampetts, but we had so much fun out there picking,” says Cornelius, noting that once you get antique shopping in your blood, you have the fever for life. “We experienced some labor pains as we worked to get this place up and running,” Ector says. “But now we have something really cute that’s going to grow and blossom.” Second Stories, located at 6288 West Broadway, is open Wednesdays through Sundays. Find them on Facebook at facebook.com/ secondstoriesshop/.

NEW APP-BASED DELIVERY SERVICE GAINING MOMENTUM IN INDIANAPOLIS & BEYOND Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing

A new app-based, peer-to-peer delivery service is gaining momentum in Indianapolis. Roadie, a less expensive, more convenient way to ship items of all shapes and sizes, is also a fabulous way for folks looking to make a few extra bucks as it’s designed for those who are already headed in a specific direction to pick up and deliver items along their route. “It’s similar to Uber and Lyft, but it moves things rather than people,” says Kelly Bailey, who has worked as a Roadie drive for about a year. “Let’s say you’re taking a road trip to the Ozarks. Just open up your Roadie app, plug in your destination, and find out if there are any gigs available along the way.”

Marc Gorling, founder and CEO of Roadie, got the idea for his app-based shipping company when he was working on a home renovation project and wanted to find an economical and efficient way to ship boxes of tile to his house from a few hours away. “What if someone was already headed in this direction?” he thought. “If they were coming this way anyway and were willing to transport those tiles for a fee, we would both stand to gain.” A customer who has an item to send simply posts a gig online or on their phone. Then Roadie matches them with a driver who is already going that direction. Senders not only save money on shipping but on not having to box or package their items. Plus, they enjoy personalized pick-up and delivery service. TownePost.com / SEPTEMBER 2017 / INDY METRO

Bailey notes that Roadie is a great way to earn extra cash when you’re going on vacation. It’s also ideal for college students who need extra bucks for books or coffee or retirees who may appreciate making a little extra dough during their post-career travels. “It’s not a full-time job, by any means, but it’s a convenient way to make some extra cash,” says Bailey, noting that thanks to money earned from Roadie, her daughter will graduate from Purdue this year debt-free. “I’m hyped about the service — not just for the company but also for the community. There are many opportunities for residents in Indianapolis to make money driving for Roadie.” For those interested in becoming a driver, all it takes is to sign up, create gig alerts and make offers on gigs you can take. Convenient and easy, drivers set their own schedule and earn rewards such as roadside assistance and free food from Waffle House. Cost for shipping items is calculated based on weight of the item and distance traveled. Most local gigs will cost between $8 and $50, while long-distance gigs with oversized items may cost up to $650. Shipping pets is more but Roadie uses people who are certified to deliver animals cross-country and who make frequent stops along the way to feed, exercise and provide extra TLC to their precious cargo. “Anything that’s hard to ship you can move with Roadie — furniture, televisions, bikes, golf clubs,” Bailey says. “We do everything but haul vehicles.”

MEET "CLONY" DUNGY MIKE BOSTIC BEARS A STRIKING RESEMBLANCE TO COLTS HALL OF FAME COACH

INDY METRO / SEPTEMBER 2017 / TownePost.com

Mike Bostic shows off his "Colts Cave" with his sons Emerson and Michael.

Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Brian Brosmer

The similarities between Mike Bostic and former Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy are far from strictly physical. It is the striking physical likeness that initially prompted Bostic to don the guise of what he calls Clony Dungy for Colts home games and special events like the Pro Football Ultimate Fan Association’s (PFUFA) annual four-day summer event in Canton, Ohio. But the coaching philosophies and professionalism Dungy brought to bear as a coach provided the true inspiration for Bostic — not only in assuming the appearance of the beloved football figure, who served as Colts coach from 2002 through 2008, but also in his own 15-year career as a sports coach.

says Bostic, who began his coaching career alongside his former tennis coach at Lawrence North High School before coaching tennis at Carmel High School from 2000 to 2015. “He put the players first, and he put his family first. He based his coaching on principles that I could really relate to. It’s kind of a tribute to him and all he did for Indianapolis.”

he cut up a sweater to resemble a sweater vest and transformed a pair of his wife’s earmuffs into a makeshift headset. “It was hysterical seeing people’s reactions,” Bostic recalls. “A few years later my wife surprised me with Colts season tickets. When we were leaving the first preseason game, some lady that passed me on the street said, ‘Hey, you look like Dungy!’ I wasn’t even dressed like him. I’ve been going to every game since, for the last four seasons, dressed like coach Dungy, and it’s just a blast. I get a lot of double takes.”

Something about Dungy’s successful coaching approach, which led to a Super Bowl championship in 2007, must have rubbed off on Bostic. “He’s been really great. He follows me on social media, and he’s a good sport about it. I told him that it’s fun for me, but it’s also in honor of a great coach and a great person.” This year marks Bostic’s twentieth as a physical education teacher at Forest Dale Elementary School, and in 2015 he decided to retire from coaching tennis to free up time with his family. The Clony Dungy persona isn’t his only family-oriented hobby these days. When his basement flooded last year, Bostic decided to renovate the space into what he calls a Colts Cave, including a painstakingly detailed, smallscale replica of Lucas Oil Stadium. With no woodworking experience, the diehard Colts fan studied countless photos of the stadium, bought the necessary materials and got busy. “There’s still stuff I want to add to it, like figures of the entire Super Bowl roster from the ‘06-‘07 championship team,” he says. “That’ll be a good winter project to go down there and work on that. It’s a nice stress relief.” That’s only one of several ongoing projects that keep Bostic occupied these days. A few years back, he fashioned a Lego figurine to resemble Dungy for he and his kids to play with. They began taking staged photos of what they affectionately called Lego Clony Dungy, and a request from a colleague prompted a huge idea for the tiny figurine. “A coworker of mine at school said she was going to Texas to see her son graduate from the Air Force, and asked to take the

Lego Dungy and take pictures around San Antonio,” Bostic says. “From there, I created a Facebook page and got it into my head that I was going to send the figure with family and friends all over the world and set the goal of sending a figurine to every continent.” Bostic then crafted a few more Lego Dungys to send to friends and strangers alike, and since then the figurines have had their pictures taken all over the world including the White House, Italy, Ireland, Jerusalem and even the South Pole. A different kind of creative breakthrough came last Thanksgiving when Bostic was attending the Steelers vs. Colts game in Indianapolis. He noticed scores of fans spinning souvenir towels around the stadium and realized he could create a more unique product fans could spin to create excitement during games. The result is Rally Rings, which Bostic says is a combination of a foam finger, a rally towel

and a fidget spinner. “We decided to patent the spin mechanism and create a product that you can take to high schools, colleges and pro sports,” he says. “It’s gotten to the point now where we can sell them to any high school and they can print the school logo on it and put a corporate sponsor on the back, and do it as a giveaway at a game. So, we’re trying to break into that promotional market now.” Bostic says his seemingly endless energy for all his various hobbies comes from a desire to stay connected with his local community and create unique family memories at the same time. “I like to have goals and be creative,” Bostic says. “My boys have fun with all these projects and things as well. It’s created a lot of cool memories for them. I’m sure they’ll look back and say, ‘Man, my dad was crazy, but it was really a lot of fun.’”

FROM CAR WASHES TO FUZIC MEDIA PRIME CAR WASH CEO LAUNCHES MARKETING COMPANY Investing all they had into the business, their success was steady. With locations in Noblesville, Carmel, Avon and The Prime Car Wash’s concept of a high-end Greenwood and, later this summer, country club feel, was Brent Oakley’s wife, Jacksonville Florida. Prime Car Wash is Carlie’s idea. doing well. Writer / Kara Kavensky Photographer / Brian Brosmer

“She felt carwashes didn’t need to be so automotive,” Brent says. “They should be built for women and professionals where people could multi task and feel like they were at a cafe. She always had people in her car, and the last thing she wanted to do was to vacuum out her car in the middle of winter.”

Brent and his partners, Bobby Hatfield and Chris Galloway always pushed for new ways of marketing their brand and their product. Brent turned to marketing to customers inside the business while they waited for their clean car to be completed. He wanted a way to let customers know about Prime as a company So Brent, along with his two partners, built a as well as different product offerings. A carwash designed for business professionals new company called Fuzic was with women in mind. born. Brent wanted to Fuse message and SEPTEMBER 2017 / GEIST/FISHERS MAGAZINE

music together through software. Fuzic is a SaaS (software as a service) model connecting voice talent with customer ad requests. From an app, a company can request their ad message, and within 30 minutes, the message is looped into streaming music. “When a manager thinks of what they want to say for the day, he or she can type in the message and the request is sent out to voice talent across the country,” Brent says. “The message is recorded, filtered, cleaned and pushed out. The voice talent can record the message on their phone via the app and submit. Clients pay $129 per month for unlimited music announcements.”

Voice talent includes well-known radio personalities and TV voices that millions of people are familiar with. This professional talent is recruited from across the country, and the type of voice desired is selected by the client. In addition to recording messages and ads, companies can advertise via the same method, which keeps businesses clutter free from solicitations and fliers. “Fuzic gives businesses the ability to control their environment,” Brent says. “Today, there is so much business owners can’t control with social media, we can control what is inside our four walls. We do it with announcements, and it makes you sound more professional than you are, bigger than you are.”

Founder Brent Oakley (right) and Executive Chairman Scott McCorkle (left) are the brains behind Fuzic Media.

Through a friend in Florida who owns a SkyZone franchise, Tiffany McCorkle was told about Fuzic. She was asked if she knew about this new company located in Fishers. She had not and contacted Brent. After meeting with Brent, she told him, “My husband is going to be really be excited about this.” Scott McCorkle, former Salesforce Cloud CEO, called Brent two days later. “What are your plans?” That was one of the first questions Scott asked after listening to Brent’s pitch of Fuzic. “You already have 50 clients.” Coming from the carwash business is a totally different world. Brent didn’t know what he would do to grow Fuzic other than through self-funded, slow growth. “What would you do?” Brent asked Scott. “I would go turbo if you’d let me!” Scott said. McCorkle is now Executive Chairman and has brought on a team for rapid growth. Fuzic is on track to employ 300 by 2019. At print, Fuzic had 20 employees and more than 130 customers. Their offices recently moved to the Nickel Plate District. For more information, visit fuzicmedia.com. GEIST/FISHERS MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2017

WELL ADJUSTED FISHERS DOCTOR SERVES AS INDY ELEVEN TEAM CHIROPRACTOR Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Brian Brosmer

For Nathan Ziegler, a career in chiropractics and sports rehab was, in many ways, in the cards from an early age. Ziegler, an Arkansas native, grew up observing the fulfillment his father and two uncles received as chiropractors, and as an avid sports fan, he contemplated a similar professional path before graduating from high school. “I’ve always been interested in health and wellness,” Ziegler says. “My dad was the team chiropractor for my high school, and he would adjust the players on the sidelines and before games. “ After finishing his undergraduate studies at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee,

Ziegler obtained his Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) degree and a master’s degree in sports science and rehabilitation from Logan University in Chesterfield, Missouri, where he met Caitlin Wolf, who grew up in Carmel and was also pursuing her D.C. and sports rehab degrees. Prior to completing their coursework in April of 2016, Wolf broached the idea of eventually opening a practice in her native Hamilton County. Less than four months after graduating, Wolf and Ziegler had opened the doors to Alliance Chiropractic in Fishers. “Dr. Wolf knew that Fishers is a growing area and would be a good place to practice,” Ziegler says, adding that he and Wolf are engaged and spend their downtime hiking, running local trails and exploring the Fishers restaurant scene. “We do a lot of rehab in the office — a lot of muscle therapy and adjustments. Dr. Wolf works a lot with SEPTEMBER 2017 / GEIST/FISHERS MAGAZINE

children and the older population. I’ll work with athletes and anybody in general, in any phase of their health.” Ziegler’s childhood involvement in sports, including soccer, and his observations of his father on the sidelines of his high school sports teams in a chiropractic capacity, both foreshadowed what is currently a major component of Ziegler’s own professional practice. Since March, he has served as a team chiropractor for the Indy Eleven men’s professional soccer team and treats players before, during and after each home game on Saturday evenings. “I had always been interested in athletes and sports, and once I got my masters and got my D.C., wherever I moved to I wanted to try to get involved with a local team, either high school, college or pro,” Ziegler says. “After opening, I started looking

around at some of the teams here. I emailed the Indy Eleven team manager and got in communication with their head athletic trainer, and it went from there.” Every Tuesday Ziegler arrives for Indy Eleven practices alongside the team’s massage therapist, physical therapists, athletic trainers and medical doctors and applies spinal adjustments and muscle therapy to any players in need. “Dr. Ziegler has really been invaluable for us in stretching and doing adjustments for the players and educating them on posture and movement,” says Brian Gerlach, who has served as head athletic trainer for Indy Eleven since the team’s North American Soccer League debut in 2014. “It’s a little bit more of a holistic approach. If a player is complaining of a neck problem, he might not treat the neck and will treat something else that ties into that problem.”

Dr. Nathan Ziegler, co-owner of Alliance Chiropractic in Fishers, is the Indy Eleven team chiropractor.

Ziegler says pro soccer players tend to have predominantly lower extremity issues, and he treats each player according to their specific ailment. “I bring all my equipment and notes to the locker room and set up, and we start working with the athletes and ask them what their complaints are that day,” he says. “I’ll be on the sidelines for games keeping an eye on them, and I’m there for halftime and post-game adjustments.” Ziegler adds that getting to know the players on the Indy Eleven roster has been the most enjoyable part of his involvement with the team so far. “They’re wonderful individuals, as well as the trainers and medical staff,” he says. “Being pros, they have a huge amount of drive and want to be the best, and you can see that in the practices and when you’re communicating one on one. They want to be in the best shape they can be, so if I can offer chiropractic and provide that so they can better themselves, they’re very grateful.” For more information on Alliance Chiropractic, call 317-482-7780 or visit alliancechiroindy.com. “Learn Early, Live Well and Lead!”

FRESH FOOD FLAVORS Just like you, I am a parent. Before that, I attended the International Culinary School at the Art Institute of Indianapolis and cooking professionally in fine dining around the city, I became very concerned with what my six month old was about to start eating. I learned everything I could about what was safe for infants to eat. I had a mission. Fortunately, I had just enough time with work and family to study and stay up late making real baby food from scratch for her. Most parents simply do not have the time or energy to do it especially if both parents are working or caring for multiple children. Some of you don’t need to imagine what it is like taking care of an infant while running another child to soccer practice – you have already done it. When my daughter was old enough to enroll in a daycare, we looked everywhere trying to find the right fit. I insisted certain junk foods not be fed to my kids like cheese puffs and drinks that were 1% juice and 99% sugar. I will never forget checking out one home-based provider where you could feel the cigarette tar on the walls. It took more than a month to find a place we liked. That was 9 years ago, but it feels like yesterday. Rainbow Station is leaps and bounds superior over the options I had 9 years ago. I would like to share with you some of my favorite fresh food priorities for my Rainbow Station kids which you might find helpful: • Always aim to get all the fresh seasonal food I can. • Find pastries that are nut and allergen free • Serve veggies softly blanched with minimal seasoning. Kids don’t

Chef Seiji Bryant, Rainbow Station have sophisticated palates. Trying too hard to cover up the flavor with cheese or sauces will backfire. • Don’t go crazy trying to go 100% organic, it isn’t practical. The desire to go natural is the most important principal. • No space or time to garden? Start with some potted herbs in the kitchen as a reminder of where your food comes from. • Don’t worry if your child doesn’t want to eat dinner, toddlers often only like to eat during the day after being active. • Be positive when exposing kids to new foods like it is a treat and not a burden. • Find a few great recipes that are less than 5 ingredients to make with kids so they can build confidence in cooking. My salsa and hummus are loved by the Rainbow Station kids. • Incorporate raw veggies routinely for snacks. Just as I have always tried with my own kids and making sure they enjoy and love food that is healthy, I do the same with my Rainbow Station kids. I have made real connections with the kids. They love to see me every morning to inspect the day’s menu. Seeing their excitement for healthy fresh food is very rewarding. If the food your children eat is important to you, please come by to check out the kitchen, meet me, and tell me your concerns. Make sure to take a tour to meet the nurses and teachers too. Lets make a difference.

AMERICA’S TOP DREAM DESTINATIONS FOR 2017 Australia continues to exert a powerful hold on the imagination of American travelers. When asked to pick their “ultimate dream destination,” the 2,854 Americans who responded to Travel Leaders Group’s Consumer Travel Survey picked Australia as their top response. It was followed by Italy, Bora Bora, Ireland and New Zealand. Australia routinely ranks number one in Travel Leaders Group’s surveys of dream destinations. For most travelers, it’s a trip they’ll take once in their lives. And there’s such variety in a country about the same size as the continental United States, from vibrant cities like Sydney with its iconic Opera House, to wine-growing regions like Margaret River, in western Australia. It’s also a place of natural wonders, from the rugged Outback to the Great Barrier Reef, teeming with marine life. Ever since director Peter Jackson used his

native New Zealand as Middle-earth in the “Lord of the Rings” movies, the country has grown in popularity as a tourist destination. Travelers can visit many of the locations where the series was filmed, from the lush pastures of the Waikato region to forested Mount Victoria in Wellington, New Zealand’s capital. But there’s much to see beyond that, including cosmopolitan Auckland, on theNorth Island, and the mountains, lakes and glaciers of the South Island. If your dream destination involves getting away to a tropical paradise, then Bora Bora may fit the bill. A short flight from Tahiti, this small island in the South Pacific is renowned for its white-sand beaches and turquoise waters. The island is dotted with luxury resorts, overwater bungalows and thatched-roof villas.

Geist resident Edwin Brochin is a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Master Falconer.

GEIST RESIDENT TALKS TAEKWONDO, FILM DIRECTING AND FALCON TRAINING Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Brian Brosmer

The term “Renaissance man” is probably an understatement when applied to Geist resident Edwin Brochin. His past and current professional titles include martial arts instructor, charter boat captain, hunting and fishing guide, television producer and host and feature film director. An Evansville native, Brochin competed as a full-time taekwondo athlete from 1989 to 2003, with seven Indiana state championships and a medal from the 1997 U.S. championship tournament to his name. In 1993, he opened the doors to TKO Taekwondo, a self-defense and competitive martial arts dojo in Indianapolis, and began hosting tournaments at his facility shortly after building up a steady clientele. Brochin’s experience hosting TKO tournaments unwittingly helped pave the way for a successful foray into the television and film world — but those experiences

had nothing to do with kicking, punching or and fishing guide services in Geist, which I had started promoting in 1996 as Geist grappling. Lake Charters,” Brochin says. “I eventually expanded the business in 2000 and started “I would videotape all those fight nights, running trips on the Ohio River and then so I learned how to produce and edit just Lake Michigan and the east coast.” by filming those tournaments,” he says. “I enjoyed it and seemed to have a knack Since launching his TV document series, for it.” which ran until 2010, Brochin has produced and directed several films including “The In 1999 Brochin’s informal directorial Falconer: Sport of Kings”, his first feature endeavors continued when he and a film shot in Mongolia and completed in friend traveled to South Carolina to shoot July 2013. The film follows professional an educational video on catfish fishing falconers who use golden eagles for methods. An avid outdoorsman since hunting expeditions, and Brochin spent his early years, Brochin rented a booth almost a month living among Mongolian at the annual Indianapolis Boat, Sport sheepherders for the project. It won Best and Travel Show to sell VHS copies of Director of a Feature Documentary at the the film, and a representative from local Indy channel UPN-23 promptly took 2014 Madrid International Film Festival and notice. A 13-episode fishing and hunting several other international awards. documentary series was agreed to, and by 2005 “Outdoors with Eddie Brochin”, “I was fascinated with birds of prey since produced by and starring Brochin himself, I was about eight years old,” says Brochin, was airing nationally. who began training formally in falconry in 2003 and is currently a U.S. Fish and Wildlife “It was a way to promote my charter boat Service Master Falconer. “I was an apprentice 62 / GEIST MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2017 / atGeist.com

under a master falconer here in town named Greg Thomas and studied for years at it. It’s fascinating to me.” Since completing “Falconers”, Brochin has remained busy with two subsequent film projects while continuing to operate Geist Lake Charters. “Spirit of the Bull” tells the story of a legendary fighting bull known as El Toron and won multiple international film festival awards in 2016. “The Whisker Seeker”, a documentary on conservation practices related to catfish, was completed this year and has already been accepted into three film festivals including this fall’s Louisville International Festival of Film. “It’s a conservation film about catfish and exposing all the illegal fishing practices in the industry as well as the legal commercial overharvesting of catfish around the country,” Brochin says. “It took me five years to produce, and it’s been released on Amazon Prime.” Brochin recently signed a distribution deal with Sony Entertainment for all three of his film documentaries, which will be available through iTunes, Google Play, Netflix and Hulu beginning in November. Never one to stay idle, he is currently working on a sequel to The Whisker Seeker called “Sharks of the Amazon”, which he hopes to be the second in an ongoing documentary series on catfish. Reflecting on his unusually diverse career journey, Brochin maintains that his successes have arisen from an honest and diligent pursuit of his true passions. “The things I’ve built up and spent so much time on, like my martial arts facility and my hunting and fishing charter service, I feel a strong responsibility to maintain those things and take pride in them,” he says. “There’s never been a time to really get too comfortable, and I enjoy all these things that I involve myself with.”

THERE IS ANOTHER WAY! CHOOSE ARBITRATION TODAY! Writer / Mary Wisehart Phillips

Are you concerned the judge is less familiar with family law cases? Are you concerned the judge does not want to hear your family law situation? Are you concerned it will take too long to get a court hearing? Are you concerned it will take too long to get a decision from the judge? Choosing Family Law Arbitration is a solution to these and other concerns. In 2005, the Indiana Legislature created the Family Law Arbitration Act (FLAA). Under Indiana Code 34-57-5, parties to a family law dispute can make a choice to have their case arbitrated. An arbitrator can make decisions in divorce, post-divorce and paternity (once the paternity has been established) matters, such as child support, custody, parenting time, modifications and the divisions of assets and debts. An arbitrator acts as a “private judge” and has the decision-making authority of a court, with the exception of establishing paternity itself and the authority to incarcerate someone for contempt. The decision of the Arbitrator is appealable. BENEFITS: 1. Arbitrator’s knowledge and experience in Family Law – A Family Law Arbitrator must be: a.) A Registered Family Law Mediator; b.) A Certified Family Law Specialist; or c.) A Senior Judge. The parties may agree on an arbitrator or the court will appoint a panel of qualified arbitrators from which the parties will select their arbitrator.

2. Often less expensive than going to court – While, an arbitrator is paid for his or her services, the overall process is generally less expensive than litigation. Arbitration is scheduled at the convenience of the parties and the arbitrator, so continuances are rare or can be handled efficiently. The rules of evidence are relaxed or waived, saving time and money in witness costs and the formal submission of certain types of evidence. 3. Quick scheduling and decisions – Courts are clogged with a vast number of cases and hearings. Arbitration can also be scheduled in the evening or on the weekend! Decisions must be submitted within 30 days, and many arbitrators will submit their decision within a week or two. 4. Confidential and relaxed atmosphere – Arbitration will take place in a private office, snacks and beverages are often provided, and the process is less formal. There is no waiting — the Arbitration begins at your scheduled time. Family law matters can be very destructive to relationships between family members. This can be compounded when decisions are not made quickly so that parties can move forward. There have been many times in my career when a family simply cannot get a court date or decision quickly enough to timely resolve an issue, such as parenting time over a holiday or the possession of a certain asset or the payment of a certain debt. have also had experience with clients who cannot afford the costs of court litigation on a single issue. Consider arbitration as an alternative to a lengthy, costly and stressful court battle. Talk with your attorney or the other party about submitting your case to arbitration today.
