Joey Chestnut made his way to Indianapolis August 5 for the Ice Cream Eating Championship at the Indiana State Fair. Chestnut would finish second in the event, knocking down 14.5 pints of ice cream in six minutes and missing the record by last year’s winner Miki Sudo of 16.5 pints. Before he took the stage and grabbed his spoon for the competition that Sunday, the 11-time Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest champion sat down with us to talk being back in Indy, strategy, his pre-competition playlist and much more. You are coming off yet another Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Championship this July and a new world record 74 hot dogs. How do you feel and what does the new record mean to you? JC: “I’ve definitely recuperated. I’ve been in celebration mode a bit. Two minutes into the contest, I knew they were 10 off on the count. It was a bummer for the crowd. I was going at a blistering pace. It is exciting. My body is still cooperating, and every year I’m learning more about my body and how to push it farther. I know 75 or 76 hot dogs could be doable for me, too.”
Back in Indianapolis. You’ve been here several times for the St. Elmo CocktailEating Championship. What’s it like being back in Indy and where does the city rank up there for you?
in a town in California, it is delicious. I’m a fat boy having fun in that contest. The St. Elmo’s shrimp are delicious too. I love hot dogs and the Nathan’s contest, but it is one of the harder ones to do. You are talking 40,000 people screaming at you, which is stressful. But I love it. Twinkies were tough as well. You aren’t feeling good after eating 121 of them. After every contest, I’m not craving any food for at least 24 hours.”
JC: “I love Indianapolis. I come here every year for the St. Elmo contest. This is a great city. It is a clean, big city, and there aren’t too many of those in the United States. The people are great, Who is Joey Chestnut outside of the food the food is great, great downtown bars — I’m world? What are some of your hobbies always happy to come back here and always and how do you spend your free time? want to stay.” Ice cream is one of many contests that you do each year. What, if anything, can you do strategy-wise for ice cream contests to help you? JC: “There is very little you can do. You just have to turn your brain off, go numb and find a rhythm because everything is going to hurt. Your hand hurts from dipping your spoon in each time, your teeth and throat hurt. It is a matter of trying to block it out for six minutes. It is a shorter contest because it does hurt.” You’ve set tons of world records in your career, what are some of the competitions that you enjoy most and some that are the toughest? JC: “Pumpkin Pie is a fun one. I do that one atGeist.com / SEPTEMBER 2018 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 7
JC: “I love eating more than anything, but I also enjoy fishing. We recently came out with a condiment brand — Joey Chestnut Condiments — which is amazing. I’m proud of that. I do a lot of work with charities like Hidden Heroes, and I’m happy to be a part of that, too. I’m a big Oakland Athletics fan and go to games each year.” Are you a big music fan? Who is your goto when it comes to a pre-competition playlist? JC: “I mostly enjoy rock music but will listen to anything good. I have some Lady Gaga in my pre-contest playlist. ‘Born This Way’ amps me up. I’m a big Red Hot Chili Peppers fan, too. I like Rob Zombie. He has a song called ‘Feel So Numb’ that I have on my mix before contests.”

wimming is a strange sport. Swimmers compete individually, but they are part of a team and a larger community. It can be incredibly communal, despite being an “individual” sport. Few understand this more than Joel Elber. Elber is a family man, Cleveland sports enthusiast and Lawrence North High School’s new swimming coach. Being an incredibly accomplished swimmer himself, the new coach hopes to create swim teams that are a credit to Lawrence. While growing up in Brunswick, Ohio, Elber loved sports, especially swimming. His swimming skill even earned him a scholarship to The Ohio State University. During his time as a Buckeye, Elber became an accomplished swimmer. He earned seven-time All-American swimmer honors, was a three-year team captain and a Big Ten Champion. After graduating college, Elber decided to stay in the world of swimming. He took a few professional coaching jobs and briefly swam professionally at Team Elite in Charlotte, North Carolina. Then this past July, Elber agreed to become the full-time swim Coach for Lawrence North, largely because Lawrence reminds him of his small hometown outside of Cleveland. The new coach has lofty goals for Lawrance North’s swim team. While he aims to score in the state swim meet, Elber’s highest priority is creating a great experience for his athletes.
Joel Elber was a three-year team captain and a Big Ten Champion while with Ohio State.
“I’m in the business of putting smiles on athletes’ faces,” he says. Elber believes his athletes-first approach will ultimately create good swimmers and help develop swimming team’s presence in Lawrence. One way that Elber plans to create good athletes is requiring good old-fashioned hard work. While all athletic endeavors reward hard work, few sports rival swimming’s correlation between effort and results. 10 / GEIST MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2018 / atGeist.com
“At the end of the season you get exactly what you deserve, to the hundredth of a second,” Elber says. “Swimming is a very unforgiving sport in that regard.” The tight connection between hard work and reward makes swimming an ideal value building sport. However, Elber is not what you would call an “old-fashioned” coach. Swimming is heavily filled with traditions and norms, and Elber vocally states that not all of them are for the better. For example, many traditional coaches demand constant, lengthy and uninterrupted pool time. Elber, on the other hand, believes in the psychological benefit of breaks. “I’m far more interested in creating great people and having this be a positive experience than squeezing an extra couple hundredths of a second out,” he says. Looking to the future, Elber hopes his dedicated and nontraditional approach will
benefit his athletes and the larger Lawrence community. To help invigorate the sport in his new hometown, Elber is even open to people sitting on meets. Anyone who wants can see the meet schedule online, but

Mt. Vernon Middle School student, Jakeb Henry
Jakeb’s Zoo Adventure Mt. Vernon Middle School Students Raise Awareness, Money For Fellow Classmate With Mitochondrial Disease Writer / Matt Keating Photos Provided by Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation
Jakeb Henry, a Mt. Vernon Middle School student with Mitochondrial Disease, recently had a ball swimming with dolphins and painting with animals at The Indianapolis Zoo. It was all thanks to his classmates, his fellow Mt. Vernon students, and many caring teachers and parents who held a fundraiser to educate the community about his disease and raise enough money for him to enjoy a zoo adventure. Marisa Salasky, an eighth grade Academy U.S. History Teacher at Mt. Vernon Middle School says the fundraiser came about after Jakeb decided to share his story about the disease, which causes patients to struggle
with energy defiance and lack of muscle strength. Jakeb shared his story with his science class. “From there, many students wanted to do something for him (throw him a party, give him a cake or cards),” Salasky says. “Maitlyn Griner, an eighth-grade student, had the idea to put together a fundraiser through the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) to raise money to send him to the Indianapolis Zoo, an idea that teachers were already planning on doing for him.” Salasky says the teachers thought the trip would be more meaningful if it came from the students. “We discussed this with Jakeb, always getting his input on what we were going to do, and created the fundraiser,” Salasky says. “Jakeb really wanted to have the focus atGeist.com / SEPTEMBER 2018 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 13
be on genetic disease awareness and kids suffering from the side effects. A week or two before the fundraiser, I asked students in NJHS who wanted to participate, to create powerpoint slides highlighting some genetic diseases that we would share with the student body over our daily announcements.” The teachers informed the students a few days leading up to the fundraiser what they would be doing and when to start donating. The school’s initial goal was to raise $750 to send Jakeb and his family to the zoo to swim with the dolphins. “We ended up raising close to $1,700,” Salasky says. “The kids were very involved. It was amazing to see them rally together for their classmate. Students donated their own personal money that they had been saving for various reasons because they
wanted to see Jakeb get his dream trip to the zoo. During homeroom, we would have discussions about the genetic diseases highlighted in the announcements.” Some students had personal connections they shared. “It was very humbling for me as a teacher to have these discussions with students and to see them working to make this a reality,” Salasky adds. “Jakeb is an inspiration. He is the strongest kid I know. He never lets this disease be an excuse for him. He is not a victim. Jakeb has the biggest passion for history and social studies, and I love being able to have educated discussions with him.” Stacy Griner, an eighth-grade academy science teacher at Mt. Vernon Middle School, says, “Jakeb was all smiles at his zoo adventure. When we first asked Jakeb about doing the fundraiser, he was pretty reserved and I don't think he knew what to expect.

Being able to share his story and raise awareness for genetic diseases has helped to bring Jakeb out of his shell a little.” She added that Jakeb’s zoo visit was amazing to witness. “I was so incredibly blessed and humbled to be asked to be a part of his experience,” Stacy says. “Every time students donated, I teared up. It was so moving to see teenagers giving of themselves to help a fellow classmate - even if they didn't know him.” Stacy knows Jakeb had a great time
during his adventure and felt somewhat overwhelmed at the act of kindness. “I’ve been teaching a long time and this by far was one of the most special and amazing events I've ever been a part of,” she adds. Stacy’s daughter, Maitlyn, an eighthgrade student, says the fundraiser “meant that we were able to raise awareness, and we were able to give him something he wanted during his fight against Mitochondrial Disease. We want to keep supporting Jakeb so we can raise awareness and help others.”

How does a relatively small, family-owned bakery not only stay in business but also flourish for more than a century? For Taylor’s Bakery co-owners and Fishers natives Drew and Matt Allen, it’s all about genuinely caring about your product, your employees and your community. Originally founded in 1913 at 38th and Illinois streets as a grocery store offering baked goods among its many food and household products, Taylor’s began focusing on sweet treats after the 1930s, gaining a loyal customer following through subsequent decades.
John Allen, whose grandfather Dennis O. Taylor founded the business and whose parents helped to grow and diversify it, eventually assumed ownership and in 1968 opened a second location at 62nd Street and Allisonville Road to stay in sync with Indianapolis’s northward population growth. That location became the company’s headquarters in 1973 after the 38th and Illinois store closed, and for 50 years it’s helped to satisfy Indy’s sweet tooth. “We’ve continued to invest in the areas where we do business, and we’re continually updating and upgrading our equipment,” says Drew, who joined the family business in the early 2000s with Matt after the brothers graduated from 16 / GEIST MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2018 / atGeist.com
Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business. “It’s been a slow, steady growth.” If it’s baked and it’s sweet, you’ll likely find it at Taylor’s - cookies, cakes, doughnuts, danish, breads and dinner rolls and flavored popcorn are all offered. Everything is made fresh daily down to the ice cream, which is a more recent addition to the company’s menu and is churned from scratch using special in-house machinery. Wedding cakes are in constant demand, as are birthday and specialty cakes for most any occasion. The company keeps a steady stream of institutional business including schools, restaurants and hospitals in addition to its
individual retail base, and Matt says he and Drew strive to keep a balance between the two types of clientele. “We do the commercial work, but we never want to lose focus on the retail customers that come in and see us day in and day out,” he says. “You have to perform for them.” In September of 2003 Drew and Matt launched a second location in downtown Fishers on East 116th Street with John, who is now semi-retired, and they say the timing was perfect for an expansion. “With the explosion of businesses up in Fishers we do so much business there now,” Matt says. “It’s a different clientele with the “With us being Fishers natives we wanted a young professionals up there, versus down at 62nd and Allisonville where you see some presence there,” Drew says. “The neat thing is we’re seeing the second generation after older clients.” being there for 15 years — kids that came in with their parents have gone off to school Drew adds that the decision to enter the Fishers market, while making good business and are married and are back with their kids sense, had a sentimental component as well. saying their mom used to bring them in.”
atGeist.com / SEPTEMBER 2018 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 17
To commemorate 100 years in business, the Allens and their employees observed the occasion with (what else?) a celebratory cake, along with doughnut hole giveaways all day long. “We did a 10-tier cake and each tier
represented a decade in the business with old photos or something that was specific to that time period,” Matt says. With 75 full-time and part-time employees at both locations and a still-growing customer base, the Allen brothers work daily to carry on the concept their great-grandfather Dennis began so long ago. “You hear businesses say it’s all about the customer, and from the perspective of Matt and I, it is all about the customer but it’s also all about the employee,” Drew says. “If you don’t have people to help you, there’s no way you’re going to make it. Our people are here day and night working their tails off, and we’re only closed a few hours a day. We try to take care of them as best we can, along with our customers.” Taylor’s Bakery is located at 6216 Allisonville Road in Indianapolis, 317-251-9575, and 8395 East 116th Street in Fishers (317-5962253). SUN KING CANVITATIONAL CANNED CRAFT BEER FESTIVAL RETURNS SEPT. 8 The Midwest’s largest canned craft beer festival is back. The 6th annual Sun King CANvitational will return to downtown Indianapolis on Sept. 8. Located on the west block of Georgia Street, known for Super Bowl XLVI festivities and the famed Pan Am Plaza, this year’s CANvitational will showcase more than 55 craft breweries from across America that can their beers. Award-winning breweries will offer samples of craft beer, and patrons can enjoy local food trucks and music, all in an urban downtown atmosphere. All proceeds from the event will benefit six central Indiana not-for-profits. “For our 6th year hosting the Sun King CANvitational, six central Indiana charities will benefit from the festival proceeds,” says Sun King Brewery co-founder and
head brewer Dave Colt. “Sun King has invited over 55 can craft beer friends from near and far to join us in celebration, and we are excited to announce this year’s CANlaboration is with Founders Brewing of Grand Rapids, Mich. Founders has been instrumental in the craft beer movement and our CANlaboration will be released during CANvitational.” Sun King Brewing Company is the brainchild of Dave Colt and Clay Robinson. With the help of family and friends, the first keg of Sun King beer rolled out the door for delivery in July 2009. Now available on tap and in cans at hundreds of locations statewide, Sun King has grown into a leader in the craft brewing movement in Indiana. Sun King’s brewers handcraft flagship, seasonal and specialty beers that atGeist.com / SEPTEMBER 2018 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 19
have been rewarded with multiple medals at the Indiana Brewers Cup, the Great American Beer Festival and World Beer Cup competitions, and the brewery donates to hundreds of community organizations throughout Indiana. Sun King has three locations: A downtown Indianapolis brewery and tasting room, a small batch brewery and tasting room in Fishers and Sun King Spirits, a distillery in Carmel that opened in July 2018. Tickets are on sale now and available at all Sun King locations (135 N. College Ave., downtown Indianapolis; 7848 E. 96th St., Fishers; 351 Monon Blvd, Carmel) or at canvitational.com. A sampling glass and event tasting notebook will be provided to each ticket holder.

Since Los Maguelles, 222 S. Main Street, Fortville, opened in 2016, the Mexican restaurant has become a popular lunch and dinner destination. Los Maguelles Owner Raul Plascencia says he has been thrilled with the positive reception from the Fortville community. “I have a lot of customers from Geist, Fishers, Carmel and a lot of other different places,” Plascencia says “I love it. I’ve been very happy here. We make delicious food
that keeps people coming back for more. We are busy during the week and on the weekends.” Plascencia is originally from Guanajuato, Mexico and noted that he has spent years perfecting his recipes. He believes his extensive menu has helped get a lot of customers in the door. “One of our most popular meals here is the Arroz con Pollo,” Plascencia says. “A lot of our customers order that. It’s grilled chicken strips served over a bed of Mexican rice. It also had white cheese and three flour tortillas. You can also get it with shrimp.” 20 / GEIST MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2018 / atGeist.com
The Lupita’s Special has also been a big hit with repeat customers. “It’s grilled chicken sautéed with carrots, broccoli, mushrooms and topped with nacho cheese sauce,” he says. “It’s served with beans, rice and the flour tortillas.” Plascencia noted that the wide variety of fajitas at Los Maguelles have also been in high demand. “One of our best fajitas is The Fajita’s Cozumel, which includes grilled steak, shrimp, chicken breast, chorizo and pineapple,” Plascencia says. “Our Texas
Parrilla for Two is a completely loaded platter of grilled steak, chicken breast and shrimp. It’s served sizzling hot.” Other customer favorites include the enchiladas, tacos, vegetarian selections or spicy burritos. “Our burritos are stuffed,” Plascencia says. “The Burrito Tropical gets ordered a lot. Our Burritos Roqueta includes two pork burritos smothered with green tomatillo sauce and Mexican cheese and served with rice. The Burrito Loco is also very popular. It’s a huge flour tortilla stuffed with chicken, steak, grilled onions, beans and lettuce.” Plascencia stressed that he has gone out of his way to make sure everything at Los Maguelles is fresh and authentic. “I’ve had a lot of people tell me they love how authentic everything is, which is why I have a ‘Taste of Mexico Authenic’ special portion of the menu,” Plascencia says. “The Super Maguelles is a meal of a tender grilled steak, fresh grilled chicken breast and shrimp. We also have Taquitos Mexicanos, four crispy fried corn tortillas, two beef and chicken.” Specialties at Los Maguelles include the Steak & Shrimp, Chile Verde with chunks of pork cooked in a homemade green salsa and Chile Colorado with beef tips simmered in a special red sauce and served with a choice of guacamole salad or tossed salad and three flour tortillas. “We have a lot of lunch specials, and that brings in a lot of repeat customers,” Plascencia says. “Our bar area is also filled up a lot, and we have people telling us they love our Ultimate Margaritas and House Margaritas. We have 10 different draft beers, and tequilas, whiskey and drink specials.” Popular desserts include The Banana Chimichanga, Fried Ice Cream, Flan and The Sopapillas, which are fried flour tortillas drizzled with honey and butter then sprinkled with cinnamon. Plascencia knows kids can be picky eaters,
so he offers a kid’s menu with favorites such as Macaroni & Cheese with French fries, cheeseburgers, pepperoni pizza, hot dogs and more. “We really have a big menu of items to choose from,” Plascencia says. “We have something for everyone in the family.” Plascencia noted that Los Maguelles is family owned and operated and added that he loves the family atmosphere in Fortville. “We looked around at a lot of different places before we settled on Fortville,” Plascencia says. “I love the way this town reminds me of a ranch area in Mexico. There are a lot of very nice people here, and they have been great customers. We hope to be in business for a very long time.” Los Maguelles is located at 222 South Main Street or you can give them a call at 317-747-4936. UPCYCLED INTERIORS FISHERS RESIDENT RUNS CUSTOM UPHOLSTERY BUSINESS IN FORTVILLE Writer / Seth Johnson Photography Provided by Josh Brown & UpCycled Interiors
For Missy Haxton, owning and operating a custom upholstery business has truly been a lifelong pursuit.
uniquely up-cycled home furnishings and décor. Additionally, Haxton also teaches classes in her space, sharing her passion for upholstery with the public.
Originally from a small farm community in North Central Indiana, Haxton has been around textiles all her life, from custom “I have always had a heartbeat for refinishing clothing to vintage furniture. Upon trying old furniture,” Haxton says. “Even when I her hand at custom upholstery, she quickly was a little girl, my neighbor, who was kind discovered she had a knack for it. of a grandmother-type figure, taught me how to keen chairs. Then, I learned how to “When I, as an adult, took professional refinish wood furniture. intersection in all of those worlds.” With a master’s degree in healthcare administration, Haxton worked professionally in that field while operating a vintage retail shop in Noblesville as a hobby. For this space, she’d flea market pieces and then fix up or repurpose them. However, after acquiring some more upholstery supplies, she found that the demand for her work was much greater than she originally thought. “Very quickly, I started getting a lot of requests for custom pieces to be done, so I shifted in a fairly short period of time,” Haxton says. “I got out of my vintage shop, and I went full-time with custom upholstering. That’s when I really made
the decision to treat this more like a business and not a hobby.” After operating UpCycled Interiors out of her home for four years, Haxton moved the business to its current home on Main Street in Fortville. For her, the storefront space made sense for many reasons.
BUILDING WEALTH. One personalized portfolio at a time.
“I was looking for a larger workshop space, and I looked all over,” Haxton says. “I just happened to run across this space here in Fortville. It’s only about 10 minutes from my home in Fishers, so that was huge for me.” Additionally, the space allows for her to host workshops, which is something she had never done before. “I teach decorative pillow design, which is a one-evening class,” she says. “I teach a box cushion construction class, which is a two-evening class. And then, I teach upholstery, which is a six-week series.” In addition to bringing people into UpCycled to check it out, these courses also allow Haxton to meet likeminded do-it-yourselfers, too. “I wanted to teach, and I have so many people that are interested in do-ityourself projects,” she says, adding that those who are interested can find out about classes via the UpCycled Interiors Facebook page. “It’s just super fun to teach people how to do this type of thing for themselves.” By offering such a unique service, Haxton is able to cast a fairly wide net with UpCycled Interiors.

“Most of my business is custom upholstery projects, and those customers aren’t necessarily from the Fortville area,” she says. “My market is Zionsville, Carmel, North Indy, Westfield, Noblesville, Fishers, Geist, and I’ve got some Central Indianapolis customers, too. So that’s really my market, and it is not driven by my location at all.” More impressively, Haxton has achieved her success via word of mouth. “My custom business is fully based on word of mouth and repeat business, she says. “I don’t really advertise my business at all. Right now, I’m booking projects in October, and since I’ve gone to a full-time focus on this business, I have always had projects booked out two or three months at a minimum. So getting the work has never been a problem.” UpCycled Interiors is located at 12 South Main Street in Fortville. Fishers Fridays continued July 20 as City of Fishers Director of Public Relations, Ashley Elrod, joined Geist Magazine publisher Tom Britt at Four Day Ray for a Facebook Live chat. This month’s Fishers Friday was sponsored by The Max Challenge of Fishers. Elrod provided a number of updates on the city, starting off with a recap of the inaugural Spark!Fishers event. The city recently had all their committees and volunteers together at a thank-you reception to talk about the event and to be recognized for their hard work. There were more than 700 participants in the Spark!Fishers parade and more than 100 people on the committees who put in about 1,100 hours of volunteer work. “The event was a resounding home run,” Elrod says. “Our goal was to bring the community together with an entire day’s worth of entertainment. I think we checked the boxes on all of our goals.” Elrod also provided an update on the 70-plus acres of land the city has been looking to acquire for the Geist Waterfront Park. The deal is now officially done and Fishers has possession of the property. The next step will be planning out the details of the park through public and private input. “I actually took a walking tour of the property recently,” Elrod says. “It is going to be great for the Geist district and Fishers residents.” Other topics included the Fishers AgriPark, which isn’t open to the public yet but is already growing fresh vegetables that are being sold at the farmers market each week.
to be an Arts & Culture District, which “solidifies Fishers’ long-term vision for arts in the community.” Perhaps the biggest update from Elrod included the city’s plans for affordable housing in the near future. Fishers will be providing income-based workforce housing. “We are excited to add diverse housing options in downtown Fishers,” Elrod says. “We hope it will help support some of our service industries and workers. Great restaurants are popping up all over in our city, and we want to give the same access to living within walking distance of your workplace to everybody.” Seven parcels have been acquired along Lantern Road south of Fishers Elementary school, which will be the future site of the units. RealAmerica — a Fishers-based development and management company — will be heading up the project. Fishers Friday concluded with a live demonstration of the Towne Post Network’s new app “Townies Live.” The app includes augmented reality, which is built in. Customers at Four Day Ray can now scan the code on their coasters and watch several menu items come to life before they order their food. Towne Post Network has also augmented the Liberty Plaza Monument in Fishers. Residents can scan each seal on the monument and see branches of the armed forces come to life as well. With the technology, Fishers becomes the first city in the United States to augment a monument. You can download the Townies Live app free on iTunes and Google Play.

CREATING LIFELONG FRIENDSHIPS CATHEDRAL MOTHERS’ CLUB CELEBRATES 59 YEARS Writer / Lynda Hedberg Thies Photography Provided
For mothers of incoming, current and former Cathedral students, there is a tradition at Cathedral that has helped shape more than just their children, it has helped shape the school and the community. This tradition brings a diverse group of mothers together that do not know each other and through fellowship, volunteering and philanthropy create lifelong friendships and connections. They call this tradition, the Cathedral Mothers’ Club. Founded in 1959, the primary goal of the Cathedral Mothers’ Club is “to enhance the Cathedral community through initiatives that benefit faculty, staff, students and parents and which reflect the Holy Cross values.” Today, Cathedral is one of only 15 Holy Cross schools in the country and as such they do not receive funding from the Archdiocese nor the
state of Indiana, so all funds raised help the school continue to operate and grow when extra funds are needed. In addition, Cathedral students come from 130 schools in Marion County and nine other surrounding counties. So creating a community takes on a whole new challenge. The Cathedral Mothers' Club serves many objectives, but it starts with getting moms connected. While the mission to serve others through volunteerism and philanthropy is the reason for their existence, the club offers social outings, networking, faith & fellowship and personal growth opportunities through their involvement. Many of the same activities still exist today and many will tell you that the friendships have outlasted long after their children have graduated and some through grandchildren and great grandchildren. atGeist.com / SEPTEMBER 2018 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 31
One of the club’s main fundraisers is the clubs’ Bowling League which was organized by Jo Glass at Hindel Bowl in 1972 and provides a social opportunity as well. Jerry Hindel, a second-generation owner of Hindel Bowl and Cathedral graduate, noted that they have partnered with the Cathedral Mothers Club for 46 years — a tradition that brings together bowlers of all ages and skill levels. Ethel Madden, a mother of 10 children (six of which attended Cathedral), grandmother of 26, the last graduating in 2017, will have a great-grandchild starting at Cathedral soon. Madden has bowled with the League for 20 years, not consecutively she points out. But she does bowl with two longtime friends Jean Hoffman and Dorothy Barbee. “Back when I was involved, the president title did not exist, I was known as the Parliamentarian, the 89-year-old states,” she says.
She recalled fondly her years as the leader of the Club during the 1969-70 school year. “We were very active back then, we had card parties, dances, we started a bingo, which was fairly successful and we had a lot of fun, she says. “At that time the money we raised went into the general fund.” For Mary Wasky, Co-President of the Mothers' Club in 2004-2005 with Cherie Wood, the Mothers' Club was a lifeline since they moved from Wisconsin at the start of the second semester not knowing anyone. The group helped her get acclimated to the Cathedral community rather quickly. Wasky and Wood were inspired to start the Grant Program, which over the past 10 years the Mothers Club has been able to award $96,000 to improve the classroom environment and on-campus experience for teachers and students. They have provided camera equipment for photography and STEM students, research-grade automatic telescope for astronomy, athletic strength & conditioning equipment and musical instruments including a portable grand piano keyboard and much more. The Mothers' Club facilitates other activities providing support for Open House Night, Lunches and Refreshments for Faculty and Staff Appreciation Events,
Sophomore Ring Ceremony, Used all moms to stay connected,” Fuson says. Uniform Sale, Prom Parking, Baccalaureate Reception and much more. In addition to the Bowling League, the club hosts a myriad of social activities Times have changed and today many more including a day trip to Chicago and an mothers work outside of the home and are annual holiday gathering, activities that help unable to participate. For outgoing Cofoster friendships and build our working Presidents, Joannie Fuson and Jacque Dall, relationships with one another so they can they realized that working mothers were have an even stronger Mothers’ Club. not able to attend the morning meetings so they provided live-streaming technology All Cathedral mothers past, present or and they increased their online presence future are invited to participate. The group through their Facebook and Instagram meets once a month and the dues are pages to keep everyone in the loop. $19.59, a nod to the Club’s first year. Rita O’Malia, mother of three daughters that “We just really wanted to provide a way for graduated from Cathedral, was the Club’s President in 1997-98. “My goal for the club was for everyone to feel welcome and included at the school,” O’Malia says. O’Malia has a third grandson coming to Cathedral this year. “I believe that all mothers need to connect and get involved because more so than ever, with everything that is going on in this world, we need to all be in this together,” she says. If it is true that traditions represent a piece of our culture, then the 59-year history of the Cathedral Mothers' Club represents a critical component of Cathedral’s 100-year history. This tradition shapes not just the clubs’ past, but shapes who Cathedral is today and who Cathedral will be in the future. 32 / GEIST MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2018 / atGeist.com

In an age when several big-chain stores remain juggernauts in the ice cream industry, Sundae’s Homemade Ice Cream has stayed true to its family-owned, independent roots since opening in 1995. In 1977, New York natives David and Steve Buckner moved with their family from New York to Carmel, and a few years later their father opened a Swensen’s restaurant in the Glendale Mall. The franchise offered a full menu along with homemade ice cream, and it was only by the mid-1990s when dad retired that David and Steve felt the time
was right to establish their own niche in the food business and launch a shop that would specialize in the most delicious ice cream and coffee they could offer. “We believed that by focusing only on making the best-tasting ice cream and coffee, it would be difficult for a large chain or anyone to compete with us,” recalls David, who began working in restaurants at the age of 17 and graduated with an accounting degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. For close to a year the brothers sought an optimal location for their ice cream and coffee concept, eventually deciding on 79th 34 / GEIST MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2018 / atGeist.com
Street and Fall Creek Road. “The Geist area just had a certain feel about it that we liked,” David says. “It was a beautiful, wooded area with a lovely lake and it just needed a homemade ice cream shop. There are multiple schools located around us, and what kid doesn’t like ice cream?” Seven days a week, Sundae’s churns out about 100 gallons of ice cream per day onsite through the colder months. Sound like a lot? Through the summer the staff ramps it up to 225 gallons per day. It’s all made by hand in small batches, churned the old-fashioned way, and each
batch’s special flavor inclusions and variegated streak sauces are manually folded into the ice cream as it’s pulled from the freezer. The store carries a maximum of 32 flavors at any given time. “As an artisanal ice cream producer we can focus on quality ingredients,” David says. “Since we batch-produce our ice cream, we frequently work with chefs to create new flavors that complement their dessert menu.” Graham Central Station, a graham flavored ice cream with a graham swirl and chocolate crunch, remains the Sundae’s number one bestseller, while Lemoreo (you might have guessed - lemon flavored ice cream with Oreos) is another big seller and Fresh Peach tends to be a summer hit. Fall faves typically include Pumpkin, Apple Pie and Gingerbread, and this year’s Mother’s Day and Father’s Day specials were Honey Lavender, Root Beer Float and Bourbon Praline Pecan.
“We have perfected old classic flavors such as Lemon Custard, Orange Pineapple Dreamsicle and Black Walnut, and newer creations include Raspberry Rumble, Hoosier Buckeye and Sundae’s Trax,” says David, adding that the company also handles catering for weddings, corporate functions, high school open houses and other social events.

Word has certainly spread throughout the years - in addition to a faithful following of Central Indiana patrons, which David says includes toddlers to senior citizens, Sundae’s now has more than 50 wholesale accounts including restaurants, caterers, schools and colleges throughout Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. Despite the company’s growth, David says he and Steve have kept their focus where they feel it needs to be — on cranking out a great product from scratch daily.

“As the ice cream industry becomes more consolidated, Sundae’s is unique because we are still a small, familyowned and operated business,” he says. “I truly believe that a lot of people feel like when they come into Sundae’s they are at home. Having been in business for almost 25 years, we see a lot of people who experienced Sundae’s when they were children and now they are bringing their own children in.”

FORTVILLE FLORAL SHOP STILL BLOOMING AFTER 30 YEARS Writer & Photographer / Lynda Hedberg Thies
Applying for a job is a rite of passage for many teenagers and not only are these first employment opportunities a great way to earn money, but they receive plenty of experience and work skills along the way. But few expect that their first job will lead them to discover their passion, let alone a career that would span more than 30 years. Still, that is exactly what Jennifer Moss experienced when she applied for her first job at a Fortville flower shop when she was in junior high. Moss loved everything about the flower business and continued
working there throughout high school. Moss, a 1982 graduate of Mt. Vernon High School, worked at two more flower shops while pursuing her certification from the Indianapolis Floral Design School before opening her own place. Jennifer’s Flower Boutique opened its doors for business in January of 1988. While Jennifer’s name is on the door, her parents, Paul and Virginia Kemerly enthusiastically supported her venture and could be seen daily at the shop over the years, helping with store décor, customer service and making deliveries. Bradley, Moss’s son, spent much of his atGeist.com / SEPTEMBER 2018 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 37
childhood at the store and continues to help her with deliveries. Her mother, Virginia, is a mainstay at the store, greeting customers daily. Jennifer’s Flower Boutique offers a variety of fresh cut flowers for weddings and funerals, she offers memorial stones for family and pets, blankets and throws that can all be personalized, balloons, stuffed animals, planters and candy bouquets too, all at affordable prices. In the past, Jennifer’s customers primarily came from Fortville and, over time, have turned into friends.
“I have helped my customers through the happiest and some of the saddest times in their lives,” she says. Her shop is attracting new clients every day. With the revitalization and growth of the town in recent years, there is more traffic and people stopping by from surrounding towns to visit. Lately, her store has become more of a regional shop with clients from McCordsville, Geist, Pendleton, Noblesville, Carmel, Castleton and Greenfield, which has increased her delivery zone to these areas. She also offers online ordering with delivery for clients pressed for time. After 30 years in business, the passion she felt for that part-time job and now full-time career is still evident. “It’s really exciting to watch our growth,” Moss says. “We have always been here, but many don’t know we are here. restaurants and shops opening up here, it has really brought in so many wonderful customers from all over and we are excited about the future. “I think I love it more now than when I started,” she adds. “It is different every day and that is what I truly love about it because no two days are the same. Some people dread going to work each day, but I’m

blessed to do what I love.” Jennifer’s Flower Boutique is located at the corner of Staat and Main in downtown Fortville. Give them a call at 317-485-5512. Hours of Operation: Monday through Friday, 9a.m.- 6p.m. and Saturday from 9a.m.-3p.m. For more information, visit them online at jennifersflowerboutique.com.

Vista Graphic Communications & Prinveo
Always Adapting to Provide the Latest Printing Solutions Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger
Indianapolis-based start-up online printer, Prinveo.com, is combining technologically advanced printing equipment and software to deliver high-quality print at low prices with ultra-fast delivery. It’s a value proposition they are betting will attract local and regional buyers who currently use out-of-state online printers with longer lead times. Prinveo (pronounced /prin vā' ō/) was started by Fishers resident, Tim Rolfsen, who also founded and owns Vista Graphic Communications., a full-service packaging and commercial printing company. While custom packaging is what got Vista to the party, evolving customer needs led them deeper into the commercial printing market. By 2008, Rolfsen made a strategic acquisition, leading them to where they are today. “We acquired a company that was doing very complex data-driven printing and mailing,” Rolfsen says. “With that
acquisition, we also brought on board a small group of data and coding experts. This went beyond just buying lists, we now understood data hygiene, how to merge millions of names from multiple databases and execute complex variable data mailings.” Rolfsen went on to license software that would become the backbone of the ‘private client portals’ they would build and the same technology they would eventually use to build Prinveo. “The private portals we develop are for a specific customer and contain only their print marketing assets, accessible to any authorized user, Rolfsen says. “The sites are as convenient and easy to use as any retail website, and it allows marketing staff to order standard items like business cards and other marketing materials from a catalog of their own designs.” After gaining experience building private client sites and learning what their customers wanted most, Rolfsen set his sights on building Prinveo, a public facing site, not unlike VistaPrint, but geared more 40 / GEIST MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2018 / atGeist.com
for local and regional customers. In 2016, the development of Prinveo.com really began to take shape. “Like our business in general, we knew that Prinveo would be an evolution of offerings driven by customer needs,” Rolfsen says. “We plan on adding products and services each quarter. Ease of use, fast turn and high quality are paramount. We like to say, ‘Best in the Short Run.’ Print uploaded and approved by noon on Monday will be ready to ship or pick-up on Wednesday evening. “Customers are becoming more comfortable purchasing online, and printing is no exception,” Rolfsen adds. “Our technology is just a more streamlined way of providing a file to the printer, instantly looking at a proof and placing the order. Our sweet spot is clients with short-run print who need it quickly. That can be a restaurant, landscaper, graphic designer or even the director of marketing who needs 1,000 brochures for an upcoming trade show. “If they’re ordering from another online printer, there’s a very good chance it’s being
printed in California, Texas, Florida or somewhere else that, on top of the time to print, can take up to a week to arrive. Putting a rush on it can add hundreds to the bill. We’re local, we’re fast and we’re affordable.” The simplified process of ordering a print job starts by going to prinveo. com. The navigation menu is simple and intuitive. Hovering over “All Products” produces a drop-down menu of all currently offered products or select directly from the menu or any of the product images below. Each screen takes you through a series of simple steps to make your selections, and you’ll get an instant price.
Like our business in general, we knew that Prinveo would be an evolution of offerings driven by customer needs. Tim Rolfsen
“That’s the bonus,” Rolfsen says. “It’s easier than getting a traditional estimate. You can instantly see your price, competitive pricing and decide if it fits your budget and timeframe.” Once you’ve made all your selections, just upload your print file, preview it, approve it and then choose when you need it delivered and checkout. Your order is immediately checked for errors and then placed into an electronic queue to be printed. That means quick turnaround times of three to four business days or less on many items. The company has an unmatched commitment to customer service as well. “If you’ve got a design question, we’d love to hear from you, we’re only a phone call away, and your satisfaction is our most important goal,” Rolfsen says. “If you don’t have a design, our custom graphic services can create one. To receive a custom design, just submit your design project and have a quick chat with a member of our design team.” Call Vista and Prinveo today at 317898-2000 for your printing needs. They’re located at 7915 East 30th Street, centrally located on Indy’s East side, just off Shadeland and 30th. Interactive Print Now Part of New Magazine App – Townies Local Writer / Tom Britt
Some of you may remember the launch of interactive print, or augmented reality, in our magazine last summer. Shortly following our July 2017 debut, Apple announced their new augmented reality platform was rolling out in the fall and Google made a similar announcement shortly thereafter. As a result, we went back to the drawing board on our mobile strategy and decided to build a new mobile app of our own – Townies Local.
FEATURES OF THE TOWNIES LOCAL APP: • MAGAZINE AR: SCAN MARKED PAGES IN THE MAGAZINE TO WATCH THEM COME TO LIFE. • PLACES GUIDE: PULLS UP A LISTING OF LOCALLY-OWNED BUSINESSES. • COUPONS: REAL-TIME DISCOUNTS AND “SWIPE TO WIN” CONTESTS. • MAGAZINES: VIEW OUR DIGITAL MAGAZINES ON YOUR PHONE OR TABLET. • VIDEOS: WATCH MANY OF OUR LIVE VIDEO SHOWS.
Our new app has the same mission as our magazines and social media activities – to promote local business. To that end, we’ve developed a mobile app that encourages locals — or “Townies” — to share their positive experiences at local restaurants and retailers. As a bonus, we’ve added our own augmented reality platform into the app, so you can use it to scan marked pages in our magazines to see them come to life. This is the first app to incorporate mobile, social media, augmented reality and print! We are launching this app first in the Geist and Fishers Magazines. You’ll notice there are a few early adopters in the app, we will be adding more places daily. So, download the app, give it a whirl and share your local Townies knowledge with everyone! Calling All Geist Area Retailers Download the Townies Local app and click on the “+ Add Me” icon to submit your business into the app. Once your listing is approved, you’ll be live as a Townies Local “place” and we will add your business to our map in each printed issue. Packages start at $50 per month and include mobile, social media and print! 42 / GEIST MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2018 / atGeist.com
Phase II – Townies AR While the Towne Post Network just launched the Townies Local app, phase II of the development is already underway. Magazines now feature “Scan Me” pages which, when scanned using the Townies Local app, will feature videos, social media links, and other additional digital content. Phase II of the Townies Local app is in development and available on iTunes and Google Play called Townies AR (for Augmented Reality). This app features more sophisticated 3D augmentation. Currently, there are two downtown Fishers locations which feature this advanced AR: Four Day Ray Brewing and the Liberty Plaza. First Augmented Reality Menu Debuts Four Day Ray Brewing now has an augmented menu, the first in the Midwest, thanks to the Townies AR app. By
scanning a QR code on coasters available in their tasting room or bar area, users can download the free app and view menu items in AR. Photogrammetry software was used to photograph and create the 3D models of the famous Four Day Ray tenderloin, baller tots appetizer, and the popular manly wedge salad. Another First at Liberty Plaza Memorial Walking around Liberty Plaza in downtown Fishers just got a little more interesting. Eight seals dedicated to each branch of the military and public safety officials surround the monument. Scanning each of the seals using the Townies AR app, users will see 3D images hovering above.
Liberty Plaza now features augmented reality like this helicopter which appears above the United States Coast Guard monument.
For more information on how your business or organization can implement or showcase augmented reality, please contact Tom Britt (tom@townepost.com).
Scanning this Four Day Ray Brewing coaster takes you to a download of the Townies AR app. Once that app is installed, scanning the coaster again will bring up the augmented menu items.
