New Head Coach Tracy Webster
LAWRENCE NORTH HIGH SCHOOL HIRES NEW HEAD GIRLS GOLF COACH Writer / Matt Keating Photographer / Belinda Russell
June 12,” Webster says. “I’m really excited to get started!”
Golf is a game that has many positive attributes. It can bring out the best in a person if they are committed to the game — just ask Tracy Webster.
Aside from coaching for Lawrence North High School, Webster also owns a small business, Impact Golf & Fitness, LLC, Carmel, where she provides golf instruction and personal training for women and juniors. It’s a job she loves.
Webster, the new Head Girls Golf Coach at Lawrence North High School, is looking forward to the next golf season, where she will work with a talented new roster of players dedicated to the game. “I just officially signed on as head coach on
Webster, who was the assistant girls and junior varsity boys’ coach for the past two years at Lawrence North, says she has high hopes for the next golf season. 8 / GEIST MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2019 / atGeist.com
“I would really like to have a competitive group of girls,” Webster says. “They should not only be working hard in the classroom, but also on the driving range, and on the golf course. It would be a great season if we could place in the top five at MIC and county tournaments.” Webster noted that a trip to Regionals as a team would be icing on the cake. “I think it’s going to be a great year,” Webster says. “I’m sure we will have a hard working and talented group of young ladies that I will have the privilege to coach. I haven’t

We will give it our best effort and grow from there.” Webster added that, “We also have our returning senior, Caroline Salvas, who has been working really hard on her game. I know that she will be a great leader for our team, and I’m optimistic she will help build a great foundation for our program.”

Webster loves coaching a sport that she also enjoys playing. “I love how it (golf) brings out a person’s character,” Webster says. “I also love that it’s a sport you can do for the rest of your life.” Good golf coaches, such as Webster, have a vast knowledge of the game, and can offer their advice on how to swing the golf club better, and how to develop better strategies.

A good golf coach also doesn’t just teach the techniques. They teach lessons about working with your team, and not allowing short-term losses to have a long-term impact.

“You can learn a lot from a person, and how they act on a golf course,” Webster says. When she is not playing golf, Webster enjoys traveling, going to concerts, and spending time with family and friends.

Lincoln Square Pancake House has been a favorite breakfast and lunch destination for Geist residents for the past 12 years. The goal of the restaurant has always been to give guests excellent food at a fair price. It’s a decision that has paid off handsomely. “The owner of the Geist restaurant is Chris Katris (president of Lincoln Square Restaurants in Central Indiana),” Rachel Hedgepeth says, manager. “Yanna Tassopoulou (Chris’s cousin), and myself manage this location.” The food has always been great, at a price families can afford. Hedgepeth noted that Geist residents have greatly supported the restaurant ever since Lincoln Square opened its doors.
She says it helps that there weren’t many breakfast options in the immediate area when they opened. “Before Lincoln Square, the location was a Chinese restaurant called China Palace,” she says. “After they left, the location was vacant for a year or two before we moved in. The Geist location here started in 2007. It was a great spot that was in dire need of a breakfast restaurant.” The Geist community immediately became regulars. “The reaction was positive,” Hedgepeth says. “Most of our customers are like family! We see them multiple times a week or multiple times a day.” The regulars have made several of the menu items best sellers. atGeist.com / SEPTEMBER 2019 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 11
“Some of our (customer) favorites are the Banana Bread French Toast, Huevos Rancheros Skillet, and of course, the pancakes! Our house-made soups, huge salads, club sandwiches, and our gyro pita are always a big hit,” Hedgepeth says. Lincoln Square’s popular French toast choices include its Cinnamon French Toast, a tasty cinnamon roll sliced, battered and topped with candied pecans, and caramel sauce dusted with powdered sugar and cinnamon whipped butter; and Nutella French Toast, with fresh strawberries and Nutella, topped with banana, powdered sugar, and more Nutella. Lincoln originals include Country Lady, a golden-brown country-fried steak topped with homemade country gravy served alongside two eggs (any style) atop a split biscuit with country gravy; the Entire
Farm, an open biscuit topped with fried chicken breast, bacon, cheese, country gravy and eggs, served with hash browns; and their breakfast tacos. Hedgepeth noted that the waffles and crepes are also a big hit. They include the Healthy Waffle, which is loaded with granola, topped with Greek yogurt, sliced fresh strawberries, and honey; the Fruity Crepes, filled with cream cheese and topped with blueberries, strawberries or apples, and finished with a dollop of whipped cream; and the Chicken and Blueberry Butter Waffle. Hedgepeth added that you can’t go wrong with their Scramblers and Skillets, which include the German Skillet, with smoked sausage, farmfresh scrambled eggs served on potato pancakes with cheddar cheese and country gravy; the Greek Skillet, a tasty combination of gyro meat, feta cheese, onions and tomatoes; and the Lincoln Skillet, loaded with a choice of bacon, crumbled sausage or ham with onions and peppers, finished with homemade sausage gravy. Lunch favorites include a wide variety of burgers, salads, sandwiches and wraps, among many other delicious items. Hedgepeth believes that what makes Lincoln Square Pancakes so unique is the way people love the restaurant. “We are family owned and run (by the Katris family),” she says. “Father George Katris started the first Lincoln Square In 1989 in Kokomo, Indiana. There are now multiple locations throughout Indiana, including popular restaurants in Fortville and Westfield. “Most of our employees at this Geist location have been with us 10-plus years,” Hedgepeth says.

Gigi’s Cupcakes Owner Talks Success of Northside Locations Writer / Kelly Wallace Photographer / Ron Wise
A generous swirl of decadent icing tops all Gigi’s cupcakes. It’s called the Gigi’s Cupcakes signature “Gigi’s Swirl” and it’s what local franchise owner Lory Pappas says makes Gigi’s Cupcakes special.
Gigi’s Cupcakes started as a small, singlelocation bakery in Nashville, Tenn. in 2008. The store was opened by Gina “Gigi” Butler, who decided to pursue entrepreneurship after a decade of chasing a music career in Nashville. Butler used family recipes to develop the menu, and the store’s popularity grew quickly.
cupcakes in Nashville years ago, shortly after the store opened, they knew the bakery could grow into more than just a single-location cupcake shop. The Pappas were persistent in visiting Gigi’s Cupcakes until Butler finally began franchising the business. Today, there are nearly 100 locations in 27 states.

partners Paul and Kathy Arduini, opened their first Gigi’s Cupcakes location in May 2010. Gigi’s Cupcakes locations in the Greater Indianapolis area now include 8981 E 116 St. in Fishers and 8487 Union Chapel Rd. #440 Indianapolis, near The Fashion Mall at Keystone. Lory Pappas is based at the Fishers location and Paul Arduini runs the Indianapolis location. Lory says even though she spent several years working as a nurse, she has always enjoyed baking, worked in a bakery in high school and has always baking at home, so the business was a great fit for her and her family. Lory says she often works 12 hour days from 4 a.m.-4 p.m. and jokes that she is the “butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker.” “It’s hard work,” she says, but she enjoys that “no day is the same.” The stores have all become highly successful, and each location not only sells cupcakes and other sweets at the store but is available for catering desserts for special occasions such as weddings, baby showers, birthday parties, office parties and more. Pappas says they try to serve the community by donating leftover cupcakes to local non-profit organizations and has enjoyed meeting members of the community through the business. “I’ve met some really neat people,” she says. Cupcakes currently cost $3.65 each. Cupcake flavors include Wedding Cake, Scarlett’s Red Velvet, Midnight Magic, Strawberry Shortcake, White Midnight Magic, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Double Stuff, Lemon Icebox, Confetti Fun, Chocolate Salted Carmel, Triple Chocolate Torte (Gluten Friendly) and Wedding Cake (Gluten Friendly). Fall seasonal specials include S’Mores, Haystack, Pumpkin Spice Latte and Pumpkin Spice Latte (Gluten Friendly). The store also sells signature stuffed cookies, mini cupcakes and more. Store hours vary. Visit gigiscupcakesusa.com for more information.
Kammy with her father, Jared Hiner
LOCAL TEEN USES MAKE-A-WISH REQUEST TO BRING ACCESSIBLE FRIENDSHIP SWING TO HOLLAND PARK Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Belinda Russell
“Kammy is full of light,” says Jared Hiner about his daughter Kamdyn (Kammy) Hiner. “The atmosphere of the room changes when she enters. She brings positivity wherever she goes.”
genetic disorder. Diagnosed since infancy, Kammy has maintained her upbeat disposition despite suffering from delayed growth and development, seizures and low muscle tone.
“Since Kammy has a critical illness, we knew she would be eligible to be a MakeA-Wish Foundation recipient,” Hiner says. Just like any other the 16-year-old, the “We reached out to the Ohio, Kentucky Fortville resident enjoys music and and Indiana chapter. Over several months, the outdoors. One thing sets her apart our family participated in the qualifying however, she suffers from Wolf-Hirschhorn process which consisted of two home visit syndrome (WHS), an extremely rare interviews plus multiple emails.” SEPTEMBER 2019
When it came to choosing a wish, it took some time for Kammy to decide. Instead of opting for an experience that would impact only herself, she wanted to find something that would benefit a large number of people. “We were out in a park when Kammy saw a child in a wheelchair,” Hiner says. “When Kammy was younger, she went through a period when she used a wheelchair. Kammy loves being outside, and she remembered not being able to use a swing when she was in her wheelchair. That’s when she decided to use her wish
on a swing that would be accessible for individuals with special needs.” The entire Hiner family began to extensively research possible swings. They selected a design known as a friendship swing. It accommodates two people so a parent or other able-bodied person can accompany a physically-challenged child. The multi-thousand dollar swing will be installed alongside Holland Park’s playground equipment in Fishers. A commemorative plaque will be mounted in Kammy’s honor. Kammy and her family are already fairly well known in the area for the yearly fundraiser, Kammy’s Kause. When Kammy received the diagnosis of WHS, little was known about the disease except that it was the result of a deletion of a portion of the fourth chromosome. The Hiners became aware of 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization called the 4P Support Group whose mission is to improve access to treatment information and encourage research. Since 2004, Hiner has organized a local fundraiser where every dollar raised benefits the group. “This year we are trying something different by not charging admission and instead asking people just to donate what they feel the day is worth,” Hiner says. “On September 14, Main Street in Fortville will be shut down from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. for a day filled with music from 14 local bands and more than 50 arts, crafts, food and drink vendors. It’s Kammy’s favorite day of the year. She loves it more than her birthday or Christmas. “When Kammy chose an adaptive swing for her wish many people were surprised that she didn’t ask for something like a trip to Disney World,” her father adds. “But why opt for something temporary, when you can leave behind a message? We hope the swing will be a catalyst for people to think of others and inspire someone to do something for someone else.” For more information about Kammy’s Kause or to donate to 4P Support Group visit KammysKause.org. After losing her battle with depression on July 18, 2013, those closest to Peyton Riekhof established The Peyton Riekhof Foundation for Youth Hope in her memory. The youth-oriented foundation aims to help others struggling with their mental illnesses and to reduce suicide and suicide attempts across this population. On October 12, the foundation and the Fishers Running Club will team up for Stride Over Stigma, a 5K walk/run beginning at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater. It will feature organizations with resources on mental health and mental illness. There will also be entertainment and speakers, as well as food and drink vendors. “We all have mental health, we don’t all have a mental illness,” says Mike Riekhof, Founder of The Peyton Riekhof Foundation. “October is National Depression Education and Awareness
Month, and our goal is to help educate about the signs, symptoms and treatment options for depression and other mental illnesses. There will be health care providers available to screen depression and provide resources. Ultimately, we want all attendees to understand that seeking help — either from a counselor, a trusted friend or your community — is a sign of hope and strength.”
Connecting Physical Health and Mental Health Planning for Stride Over Stigma commenced this spring after the president of the Fishers Running Club, Jeanette Payne, approached Riekhof with the idea of planning a 5K to raise money for The Peyton Riekhof Foundation. “We just kind of went after it — let’s do it, let’s get it done,” Payne says. “It’s pushing forward pretty quickly.” Riekhof has had a relationship with the Fishers Running Club for about two to three years. He’s been to a couple of their SEPTEMBER 2019
weekly runs and given talks about mental health and wellness. “We are really trying to tie in physical health with mental health — trying to make them equal,” Riekhof says. “We, as a community, recognize physical health as an important factor in our lives, but mental health often gets overlooked. So it’s nice to tie the two together, and that’s one of the goals of this run.” For the Fishers Running Club, they hope to be able to build resources and give back to the community, just like The Peyton Riekhof Foundation for Youth Hope is doing. “As a running club, we use running as something that helps with our mental health,” Payne says. “As such, we want to help everybody else find good mental health. We want to reach out and help the community any way that we can by building resources and finding ways to give back to the city and to things like the Peyton Riekhof Foundation so they can continue to help in a bigger effort.”
Payne describes the event as something that is a little more laid back and something where everyone will be able to walk around and find out the resources that are available. “That’s the biggest part of it all, we want everyone to know that they’re never alone,” Payne says. “Whether a phone call or a text or an easy-access way from someone that is willing to help them if they’re struggling.” Riekhof says the name for the run came from the community’s need to get rid of the stigma associated with mental illness. “It’s one of the things that we need to do continuously across the community, get rid of the stigma associated with mental illness and the shame and guilt associated with mental illness,” he says. “As you tie in the name “Stride Over Stigma”, it goes into the theme of what this 5K is all about.”
Benefiting Youth-Oriented Programs All funds raised from the Stride Over Stigma 5K go directly back to the community. Although the foundation doesn’t have any paid staff, it has been able to pay two licensed counselors to lead support groups in both HSE high schools and two junior high schools for one hour each week. Additionally, the foundation is starting a scholarship fund with four other non-profits for families that can’t afford copays or treatment for their mental illness.

“The school has a very good relationship with Community Health Network and that provides care for students who need it on a day-by-day basis,” Riekhof says. “What we are doing is supplementing that by using two private licensed counselors. They’re not fulltime in the schools. We hit both high schools and those support groups contain about 1215 students each, and then now we’re going into the junior highs for the first time.” Since the foundation’s establishment, Hamilton Southeastern School counselors and teachers have been trained, and the schools have added a Mental Health Coordinator. Riekhof says that Community Health Network has become a valued partner in the schools and the city has embraced SEPTEMBER 2019
mental health as a priority. Junior classes across the schools have heard the message of hope for going on six years now. “You are not alone, it’s OK to not be OK,” Riekhof says. It’s Riekhof ’s hope that the 5K can not only provide hope for adolescents and the youth but for the entire community. He views it as a way to educate and create awareness across all demographics around proper mental health and mental illness. “Ultimately, we want people to speak up about their own personal illnesses that they may be hiding from or suffering from in silence and then to seek and find resources and get help,” Riekhof says. “Our mission is to end suicide across all the different demographics that it’s impacting every day.” Registration for Stride Over Stigma is forthcoming. The run will begin and end at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater. “Sponsorship opportunities are available, and we are very proud to have St. St. Vincent | Ascension Stress Center as our title sponsor,” Riekhof adds. Visit fishersrunningclub.com/ strideoverstigma to register, volunteer or learn about sponsorship opportunities for this event. REVOLUTIONIZING HEALTH CARE GATEWAY HANCOCK HEALTH WILL PROVIDE PATIENTS WITH AFFORDABLE IMAGING, LABS & CONVENIENT IMMEDIATE CARE
Writer / Josh Brown Photographer / Belinda Russell
Hancock Health is revolutionizing health care with a brand new, 30,000 square-foot facility launching this fall. Gateway Hancock Health offers a whole new approach to health care designed especially for convenience-minded, costconscious patients. Gateway will offer affordable, high-quality, low-cost labs and
imaging and an immediate care center, making it a quick and affordable stop for patients. The new facility is located at I-70 and Mount Comfort Road — only 15 minutes or less from New Palestine, Greenfield, McCordsville, Lawrence and Irvington, making it an easy drive for residents on the east side of Indianapolis. “Watching Gateway Hancock Health atGeist.com / SEPTEMBER 2019 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 25
Services come to life is incredibly rewarding for our team, who have been dreaming about this for years,” says Steve Long, President & CEO of Hancock Regional Hospital. “We are fortunate to have a very forward-thinking board that saw the potential of creating a true health campus to serve our community now and into the future. Our goal is to truly build a gateway into Hancock County, where good health and quality of life are achievable for everyone.”
The Gateway Immediate Care center will be a convenient option for all patients. As a part of Hancock Health’s state-of-the-art model, they will offer patient-friendly health care through options like “Save Your Spot” appointments, which will allow patients to schedule their appointments online and check in for registration. Patients will also receive just one, global bill for all the services they have received, which will significantly simplify the payment process. The Gateway Immediate Care also fills a void in the Greenfield area. “There are not a lot of immediate care options in the area,” says Jenn Cox, Director of Operations at Gateway Hancock Health. “We want to provide immediate, convenient care for people who are busy living life. Features like Save Your Spot scheduling and global billing will make it easier for people to access high-quality healthcare services, conveniently.” “There are places out there that do immediate and urgent care, but what they hardly ever provide is high-quality, low-cost imaging and labs,” Long adds. “We are the first in the region, if not the state, to offer patients a hospital-sponsored low-cost, high-quality diagnostic center.” The affordable lab and imaging aspect of Gateway Hancock Health is sure to be a draw for patients, especially those on highdeductible plans. Cox stresses that Gateway will not simply offer a few services for labs and imaging, but they will also make it quick, easy and affordable to get blood tests, X-rays, ultrasounds and any other services or tests that patients might need. “This was really made for that family, who on any given day, may need routine, prevention labs or an MRI. Some families have to juggle the cost versus other things in life that they have to pay for,” Cox says. “Here at Gateway, patients will receive a pre-visit estimate so they know exactly how much their services will cost. Our health advocates will be able to help patients on payment structure, too. We don’t want patients to be surprised by their health care costs, instead, we want to help them understand what services are in their best interest and why. 26 / GEIST MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2019 / atGeist.com
“At Gateway, we have the ability to run any lab ordered,” she adds. “Your doctor can order a lab to be drawn here at Gateway, and we will get you results within 36 hours. In regard to labs and imaging, we’re full service, and we look forward to offering those features to our patients.”
their networks, too. We are empowering people to take control of their health care journey.”
Gateway Hancock Health celebrates its grand opening on Sept. 6 and will begin seeing patients on Sept. 9.
In the years to come, Gateway Hancock Health envisions a full campus to be enjoyed by patients. What is seen today will be quite different in five to 10 years. Those visiting the campus could very likely enjoy expanded services and activities making Gateway a one-stop-shop of sorts.
“We are ecstatic about bringing Gateway to the community,” Long says. “This is the future of health care — services in a non-hospital environment that cater to the needs and price point of people on a highdeductible health plan.”
Gateway Hancock Health is also partnering with other external physicians and vendors. The vision for Gateway is to bridge the gap for any and all patients, not just those within the Hancock Health network. “We have 140 acres, so there will certainly be additional developments coming,” Cox “Gateway is not exclusively for Hancock says. “We hope that, in the future, when Health patients,” Cox says. “The ultimate you come for your lab or imaging needs, a goal is patient care. You may go to other sports physical or flu shot, whatever it may hospitals and physicians, but if you have be, you could get your dry-cleaning done, a high-deductible plan you still need a maybe grab a bite to eat or enjoy a beautiful low-cost option. We are working with walking trail and experience an entire campus here.” all insurance providers to be a part of
Gateway Hancock Health is located at 6189 W. John L. Modglin Drive in Greenfield. For more information, visit them online at hancockgateway.org or give them a call at 317-866-7300. GEIST NETWORKING LUNCH CLUB WORKS TOGETHER TO IMPROVE MEMBERS’ LIVES When the group started in May 2013, Bodenhamer says the goal was the same as it is today: to support, build and advance the local economy by assisting each other’s businesses and those businesses that are essential to the local economy. The club regularly meets at Detour American Grille, 10158 Brooks School Road, Indianapolis, and other locations.

“The group is free, and that’s one of the things that has really has helped us grow,” Bodenhamer says. “Since we started, everyone in the group has made valuable contacts and seen their businesses grow.”
“All of the members go out of their way to use each other’s businesses and refer clients to each other,” LaRochelle says. “We have also gotten to know each other well and have become friends.”
Bodenhamer adds that the group of local business leaders meet every Friday from 11:45 a.m. -1 p.m.
Cathi Hartzell, a broker/associate with Geist Realty, says the group had an overwhelmingly positive impact on her life.
The Geist Networking Group also tells stories, exchange books and advice, request prayers and give each other business tips.
“We have all helped each other get more business, but beyond that, we have become friends,” Bodenhamer says. “These people have seen me at my best and worst. We have all really helped each other over the years.”
“I used to be the manager at the UPS business near here, and I loved my customers and met a lot of great people,” Hartzell says. “I joined the group, and Brian encouraged me to be an entrepreneur. I

Brian Bodenhamer, director of the Geist Networking Lunch Club, says he is very proud of the way the networking group has grown over the last six years. “We have really been able to synergize by working together,” Bodenhamer says during a recent lunch meeting at Detour American Grille. “We now have 20-plus members. In the beginning, we started with just three people. We grew through positive word-ofmouth marketing.”

Tyler LaRochelle, with Northwestern Mutual Financial Planning, says the group is continually supportive of each other.
“It’s a win-win,” Haire says. “I not only do things to help their businesses, and they
help mine, but I have also been blessed to have them as friends. The business we have thrown each other’s way has also resulted in thousands of dollars in business for each other in increased business. It has resulted in real numbers in profits.” The increased business for the group has also resulted in them having more dollars to donate to charities the members are involved in.

Does buying your pets food make you feel like this? Christopher P. - Staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. Clean and fully stocked store. I drive almost 30 min out of my way cuz this is the best pet store in Indy.
Rebecca C. - Everyone here is super amazing. They always greet you and ask if you need any help. And if you do ask a question they try their very best to answer honestly and offer other suggestions that may not have been thought of. I could easily go and buy my pet’s food at the grocery store but I make it a point to go here because they are the best.
Vicki M. - Knowledgeable Caring Staff and Great Service. My dogs needed a dog food that was more compatible with their stomach issues. Our vet recommended Fromm and Paws Stop has a great selection. I love the fact that they carry the large bags up to the counter and out to my car. Also get my bird feeding supplies there. It is worth the drive.
AAAAA 200+ unsolicited Google reviews, average 4.8 A Google Paws Stop then click reviews!
Justin W. - The staff is so friendly, motivated and truly enjoy being there. Its like the Trader Joes of pet stores. I have been getting my dog food here for years. There new location is very nice. They do a great job and I wish more stores had this vibe. They care and will go above and beyond to help. #1 pet store right here.
Tamera H. - Always a pleasant experience every time I go in there. Staff are so friendly and helpful. They know a lot about the products they sell so it’s easier to make decisions on products for your pet.

POPULAR ALEHOUSE LAUNCHES SECOND LOCATION OFF 96TH STREET Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Michael Durr
before opening the doors in late January of this year.
Following on two-plus years of success in Greenwood, Tried & True Alehouse owner John Gladish is off and running with a second location on Indy’s northside, in the space formerly occupied by long-time Indy establishment Moon Dog Tavern and, more recently, 32 Taps.
“We did a little bit of demo and turned the back dining room area that used to be a live music venue into a family dining space,” Gladish says. “My wife painted almost every wall in the dining room area, and we did some various small things to make it our own.”
Gladish says the location was a natural fit for his concept, which combines what he describes as elevated pub food with a casual, family-friendly aesthetic.
Everything from the food to the music and atmosphere at both locations, according to Gladish, was formulated in honor of the establishment’s name.
“When the space became available, we realized we liked the location and just went for it,” Gladish says.
“Tried and true, of course, refers to things that have stood the test of time and that’s what we’ve hung our hat on, with everything from our menu to music to things hanging on our walls — things that have stood the test of time in our culture,” he says.
Gladish and his team officially took over the space on East 96th Street in August of 2018, and began a six-month renovation process
SEPTEMBER 2019
Food-wise, Tried & True offers a sizable lunch and dinner menu seven days a week, consisting of scratch-made pub food. You’ll find nacho trays, wings, salads, wraps, flatbreads and full-on entrees like the BBQ Bacon Chicken Dinner and the Beef Filet Tips & Shrimp. “Our breaded tenderloin sandwich is our No. 1 selling sandwich entree, and with both locations now we’ve sold more than 40,000 of those in the last two years,” Gladish says. Recent customer favorites also include the Chicken-N-Waffle Bytes, with hand-cut chicken breaded in a waffle batter, then deep-fried and served with maple syrup and a powdered sugar topping, as well as the scratch-made Lulu’s Buffalo Chicken Dip and Southwest Chicken Nachos with homemade black bean sauce.
All ages are welcome for lunch and dinner, and customers can watch one of the establishment’s 35 televisions while an ongoing soundtrack of mainly classic rock music fills the air. Kids eat free on Tuesday nights, and Tried & True recently began hosting live music on Fridays, in addition to Sunday night music on the outdoor patio. More than 50 beers, with 32 on draft, are offered at any one time at Tried & True, including a range of local brews like Sun King, Daredevil and Taxman. “We have the usual strong domestic sellers, but we also want to keep it as local as we can and rotate different local beers out,” marketing director Nick Workman says. Gladish adds that in its first year Tried
&True has gotten primarily positive feedback from northside patrons. “We make everything that we possibly can from scratch, and I think customers can ultimately tell the difference when they taste scratch-made food versus something where there’s a lot of ingredients that have been frozen,” he says. “I think customers are appreciating that part of it.” Workman adds that Tried & True has wasted no time getting involved with the local community through food donation and charity partnerships, recently hosting a silent auction to raise money for Riley Hospital for Children. “We try to do as much community involvement as we can, and we’ve been

trying to help raise money for Riley where they set up a table of memorabilia and stuff, and people can come in and do silent bidding,” Workman adds. Gladish hopes the northside Indy location is the first of multiple Tried & True locations throughout the Hoosier state. “When we opened the first Tried & True, our intentions were to create a successful concept to be able to grow in Indiana, in the Indianapolis area first and then outside of that over the years to come,” he says. “So far it’s going well here on the northside.” Tried & True Alehouse is located at 4825 E. 96th St., Suite 1600, in Indianapolis. church to Orthodox Christianity last year with his wife, Loni.
The 23rd annual St. George Festival on Sept. 20-22 presents “a heritage of faith, hospitality, good food, music and crafts from our roots in the Holy Land, the Middle East and the cultures that make up our congregation,” according to the Rev. Fr. Nabil Hanna, pastor.
“I have the opportunity to really set the stage for what visitors are going to experience. I’m a good talker, and I like that,” Ron says.
The family-oriented festival includes ethnic food booths, a live Middle Eastern band, adult and children’s dance troupes, marketplace and a children’s carnival on the front lawn with shaded adult seating areas. One new feature this year is a return of the indoor marketplace and pastry booth in the air-conditioned parish hall. The Silent Auction is also back by popular demand and will feature different items each day. Shuttle buses will run continuously from offsite parking five minutes away at 10401 East 116th Street. He explains a little about St. George, its history and the church’s ethnic makeup. While the church’s roots are in the Middle East, almost half its members are converts. But they also include immigrants from a dozen countries in the Middle East, Africa, Eastern Europe and Russia. The church’s bookstore will be open daily. Indoor hosts will explain more about the Orthodox faith and the church’s unique architectural design and iconography, which was painted by Greek iconographers after the church’s construction in 2013. Food booths will offer gyros, kafta, chicken sharwama and falafel sandwiches. Platters choices will include lamb shanks, a mezza SEPTEMBER 2019

The pastry shop will have a mouth-watering assortment of Middle Eastern pastries such as baklawa, honey roasted mixed nut bars, galaktoburko, custered filo pastry, kaak, makaroon, and ghouribeh. A complete menu is available at stgfest.org. The times for the St. George Festival are Sept. 20, 5:00-10:00 pm, Sept. 21, 1:00 to 10:00 pm and Sept. 22, 1:00-5:00 pm. The event is free to attend. Offsite parking is $5 at Journey Lutheran Ministries, 10401 East 116th Street (within walking distance). Shuttle buses will run continuously. Service animals only. FISHERS TRI KAPPA DONUT FESTIVAL RETURNS OCTOBER 5 AT SAXONY HALL Writer / Madeleine Mills-Craig Photography Provided
Entering their third year of establishment, the Donut Festival, hosted by Fishers Tri Kappa, will be held at the Saxony Hall Pavilion on Oct. 5 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for children and those three-years-old and under get in for free.
Siebert says. “We’re able to cover some of those grants that the foundation couldn’t cover. Last year, we raised $2,500 for the grant. One example of the grants that we supported was for a teacher at Sand Creek Intermediate school who did a podcast learning club. She was able to buy some equipment that we were able to provide and help the kids with communications skills. That’s an example of the grants that we’re able to help out with.”
“Your ticket gets you into the event and you can taste all of the donuts and coffee that you want. We actually have voting so that you can vote for your favorite donut and your favorite coffee,” Siebert says. “It’s kind of just a fun morning with donuts, coffee and enjoying some time with each other.”

looking for a way to refresh our fundraising efforts because we’ve been doing one event for over 20 years. Our group was kind of ready for something new. We were debating between doing something with the Donut Festival or a trivia night and people were just really excited for a Donut Festival. We look forward to participating with the local vendors and just raising funds for the teachers.” Tri Kappa decided on directing the funds generated by the festival to the Hamilton Southeastern Schools Foundation because, in the past, they had provided scholarships for students there. The issue was that there were only a few scholarships offered and those offered were for only a few hundred dollars. “We decided to relook at that and figure out how we could impact more students rather than just a student here and a student there,” Siebert says. “We took an opportunity and looked at what was going on in the schools and we found there were all of these grants that were going unfunded. This was a great way for us to refocus and be able to impact more students in our community.” For those interested in attending the festival, tickets can be found on the Tri Kappa Donut Festival Facebook page. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for children and those three and under get in for free. The festival is on Oct. 5 from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Tickets provide an unlimited amount of coffee and donuts at the festival.

ANNUAL USO OF INDIANA FIVE STAR GALA RETURNS SEPTEMBER 14 Writer / Jon Shoulders Photography Provided by USO of Indiana
the military, and the 2019 USO of Indiana Volunteer of the Year.
On September 14 Indiana residents will have a chance to support U.S. military members in a unique fashion by attending the annual United Service Organizations (USO) Five Star Gala at the Westin in downtown Indy.
Fishers resident Teresa Becker, who joined the USO of Indiana four years ago with her husband Todd after their son Lee and daughter Jennifer both enlisted in the military, joined the Five Star Gala committee three years ago. Since then, Teresa has helped put together the evening’s auction items, which she says will comprise more than $30,000 in goods and experiences this year.
The Gala will feature dinner and live music from Indy-based band The Bishops, live and silent auctions for a wide range of items and experiences and a special ceremony honoring this year’s Indiana Five Star Medal honoree, Outstanding Military Service Member honorees from each branch of
“It’s a chance to not only give of your time and help our service members, but at the Gala you can meet some wonderful people SEPTEMBER 2019
and have a fun evening,” she says. “For us, it’s been a labor of love because we love our military and feel like they and their families make such sacrifices on our behalf.” This year’s auction items will include a stay at the Waldorf Astoria resort in Maui, a night at the French Lick Springs Hotel, a skydiving session, golf equipment, gift baskets and more. “There will be a lot of nice things to win,” Teresa says. “Coast to Coast Imports in Fishers is giving away an exotic car experience, where if you win you pick out a car at the dealership and get it for the weekend. They’re bringing one of their cars
to have out front at the Westin on the night of the event and that will be fun.”
USO OF INDIANA FIVE STAR GALA
Teresa adds that the Gala is the USO of Indiana’s largest fundraising event, and 90% of all contributions to the organization go directly to operating its centers and funding programs offered to U.S. troops and their families.
When: September 14; Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and dinner will commence at 7 p.m. The program will conclude at approximately 10 p.m.
“Todd and I were out at one of the USO centers at the Indianapolis airport a few years ago and said to each other that we want to help serve those who serve,” says Teresa, whose brother was in the Navy and whose father served in the Korean War. “Even though my own kids were off serving and weren’t here, it made me feel like we could take care of other people’s kids that are in the military.”

The USO of Indiana, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit created in 1941 as a chartered affiliate of the USO with six centers currently located throughout the state, depends almost entirely on local corporate and individual contributions to keep its programs and facilities operational. Last year the USO of Indiana served more than 124,000 servicemen and women at its locations. “The USO of Indiana centers serve as a home away from home by keeping our troops connected to family, home and country through a wide variety of programs for them and their families, and by providing them with a comfortable, homey place to relax, grab a snack or meal, play games, use a computer or enjoy fellowship of other soldiers while away from home,” Teresa says. USO was founded as a nonprofit prior to World War II as a way to boost military morale through live entertainment, social facilities and other programs and special events. USO currently hosts events and distributes care packages around the world and has created several outreach programs including the Bob Hope Legacy Reading Program and the Oxygen Stronger Families Seminars.

LOKE BICYCLES OPENS DOORS TO NEW FISHERS LOCATION
Writer / Kyle Baird Photographer / Kerch Creative
As summer approaches and the Indianapolis outdoor community starts to come alive, one of the most exciting elements of the season is the return of cycling. The bikeability of Indianapolis offers a great way to both enjoy the warmer months and commute easily through the city, and one of the biggest contributors to biking culture in Indy is LoKe Bicycles. Based out of Fishers, LoKe is a community staple that has been offering personal, local, bicycle sales and repairs since 2013 and are looking to continue their history of serving Indy’s biking community this year. Since its opening, LoKe has occupied the same space in Fishers off 116th and Brooks School Rd. In April, LoKe made the move into a new location in the heart of downtown Fishers on the first floor of the new Spark Apartments building. With a new location comes excitement and new opportunity, and the owner of LoKe, Jim Moffitt, has high hopes for what the store could be. “Our shop has changed dramatically since we first opened,” he says. “When we first opened, it was your typical bike shop that had 60 to 80 bikes on the floor. E-commerce picked up and changed the face of what retail is and also what a bike shop I think is going to be, and so our shop model changed to reflect what I saw. We order in specific models and types for people when we’re working with them, so I can get almost any bike in 45 business days. “The reason I came to downtown Fishers is because the whole area is growing. I looked at several different locations, but I wanted to come here because of what’s going on downtown. There’s a lot of investment, a lot of entrepreneurial spirit going on downtown, it’s really fresh and active, and our downtown community in Fishers is amazing.”
Priding itself on selling and servicing quality bicycles, LoKe distinguishes itself from other shops by taking the time to learn the needs of each customer and then doing whatever it takes to meet those needs. The shop features a coffee bar where customers can sit down with a member of the LoKe staff, discuss what they’re looking for in a bicycle, whether that be style, price, color or a whole host of other options, and then move forward with choosing a bike that is the right fit. LoKe has the flexibility to order countless different bikes online, offering customers a wide array of options to choose from. Aside from the individualized bike sales at LoKe, they also have full-service bicycle repair and maintenance on any model of bike.
Superior risk-adjusted returns with an emphasis on
QUALITY ASSETS.
“My goal is to get people on bikes and to have LoKe bicycles be part of that,” Moffitt says. “Being a part of the community and helping the community thrive is important to us.” LoKe is located in the heart of downtown Fishers, and they are officially open for business in their new location. If you are looking for a place that can be your guide in making cycling a regular part of your life, regardless of experience level, check out LoKe Bicycles. LoKe Bicycles is located at 8800 North St. Suite 101 in Fishers across from Four Day Ray Brewing. You can visit them online at lokebicycles. com or give them a call at 317-5955653 for more information.

issues and events are organized to raise money for veteran aid.
As an avid runner, Jay Eiteljorge has taken part in a multitude of runs and even participated as a volunteer in several. Many were held to benefit organizations, but it wasn’t until he became aware of Mission 22 that Eiteljorge considered organizing an event for a cause. Through his hard work, support of others and a partnership with Financial Center First Credit Union, the inaugural Run for Hope, a 5K and one-mile run to raise awareness about veteran suicide prevention, will be held October 6 at Fort Harrison State Park.
“Last November, I attended a Veteran’s Day event sponsored by the Fishers Running Club,” Eiteljorge says. “Sarah Sparks spoke to the group about Mission 22’s efforts to reduce veteran suicides. Although I personally don’t know anyone who has committed suicide, I have a lot of family members and friends that have served in the military. To honor them, I decided to signup and become an Ambassador.”
Eiteljorge began laying the ground work for the event early this year. They were really excited about the run from the get-go. “Mission 22 is a great organization and this is the first year they have done a run in Indianapolis,” adds Financial Center Vice President of Membership Development, Dusty Simmons. “We are excited to be on the ground with them and be the title sponsor of the event. We were founded in 1953 right on Fort Benjamin Harrison, and we continue to support current military personnel and their families. We’ll definitely be on site the day of the run and plan to have a big team out there.” Run for Hope is family-friendly and features a one-mile untimed run along with a competitive timed 5K. A tee-shirt
is included in the pre-registration fees of $15 and $30 respectively. Awards will be given to the top three female and top three male finishers in the 5K. Participants may register on the day of the race, but all fees will increase by $10 and receiving a tee-shirt or medal is not guaranteed. Preregistration packet pickup will be held at the Triton Brewing Company on October 5 from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. There is a $7 parking fee to enter the park which can be waived with a current Indiana State Park Pass.

“I strongly encourage people to get to the park early so they will be ready for the 9 a.m. start,” Eiteljorge says. “I’ve reached out and talked to the office of Mayor Steve Collier and the event is on the mayor’s calendar. I have been fortunate to be surrounded by very supportive people.”

BLUSH SALON BOUTIQUE CELEBRATES REOPENING IN NEW FISHERS LOCATION Writer / Lynda Hedberg Thies Photographer / Glenda White
Melanie Stoddard represents everything positive about living and running a small business in Fishers. Recently moving her business to the Spark Apartments Building in the heart of the Nickel Plate District in May of this year, you would never know that less than a year ago, she was faced with the possibility of closing her doors for good. But with a deep desire to continue working in Fishers, along with a bit of ingenuity, her business now thrives in its new location. Four years ago, Stoddard opened the doors to her business, Blush Salon Boutique in a quaint cottage directly behind Handel’s Ice Cream. The former corporate employee enjoyed the quiet street and everything about her business. But the road to becoming a small business owner almost came to an end when she received notice that her building would be demolished to make room for new buildings and businesses. What looked like the end was given new life from an unsuspecting ally. As a small business owner, Stoddard knew that the landscape and skyline of Fishers
was rapidly progressing, but she did not know how it would affect her until she was informed in November of last year that her building was set to be demolished. She began searching for a new location right away and realized that this was not going to be an easy process. “I was literally panicked, and everything I found was either too small and expensive, too large and expensive and was going to be a struggle because all of the development, but I really did not want to leave Fishers,” she says. She wondered if she should just accept her fate and close her doors. But in her mind, she knew she had to keep fighting for a solution. She decided to reach out to the Mayor’s office and sent Mayor Scott Fadness a letter explaining her situation and asked for help. Within 24 hours, she had received an email from Megan Baumgartner, Director of Economic Development, letting her know that Mayor Fadness had forwarded her email to her. Baumgartner shared information with her about the Spark Apartments Building, which offered a solution well-suited to her business. Stoddard was shocked that she 52 / GEIST MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2019 / atGeist.com
received a call so quickly. She was very encouraged to see that even in a development boom that Fishers still cared enough to help a small business. Baumgartner introduced Stoddard to the Spark Apartments Building which provided a larger space than her old location, in prime real estate that provides a higher traffic footprint, and it was in her budget. By January, she had signed the lease, the space was built and she reopened her doors on May 10.
“The location is perfect. I could not have asked for a better solution,” Stoddard says. The design and style of Blush Salon Boutique offers a modern, clean and peaceful space. The salon was impeccably designed to create a relaxing environment. This lends itself well to the philosophy of Stoddard’s salon, which is “to provide the best products, positive and relaxing atmosphere that will put you at ease as soon as you walk in the door.” Stoddard, a wife, mother of two and a Fishers resident, is amazed how well everything worked out as she reflects back on the journey that brought her here.
LOOKING FOR AFFORDABLE DENTAL CARE FROM PEOPLE YOU CAN TRUST?
“I went to college, got a degree, worked at jobs I didn’t love until one day, I decided it was time to take a chance on my happiness,” Stoddard says. Starting Blush Salon Boutique was worth the risk, she says, and she is grateful she pursued her passion. She encourages others to believe in their dreams. “Take a chance and follow your heart even if you have to do something scary because it just might lead you to something you love,” she adds. For Stoddard, that means she will be staying in Fishers for a long time. “The people of Fishers are very welcoming,” she says. “It is a great place to live and own a business.” Along with hair services, Blush Salon Boutique offers a small boutique to celebrate the work of other local small businesses from local artisans and offer unique gifts for her customer’s convenience. For a list of products and services visit them online at blushsalonboutique.com. Blush Salon Boutique is located at 8880 North Street, #118 or call 317-523-1635.
