Owner, Emma Hostetter
Lo c al Boutique Offers Luxury Children’s Clothing Rent als Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger Photos provided by Josh Brown & The Borrowed Boutique
From the comfort of her own home, Dr. Emma Hostetter launched The Borrowed Boutique three years ago. The family physician and public health doctor had traveled all over the globe working with women and children’s health, witnessing endless cases of health disparities, in underdeveloped countries. Dr. Hostetter decided to take some time off following the birth of her daughter. In her true fashion, Hostetter used the time off not only to care for her newborn but to find new creative outlets.
“I’ve had an entrepreneurial spirit since I was a child, and I always found creative ways to make money like selling candy for a camping trip,” she says. “The first thing that came to my mind was my love for children’s fashion and dressing up my daughter. Then I started to realize how much I was investing in these clothes to have her wear it only once.” After purchasing enough dresses for baby photo shoots, her husband had the lightbulb idea for Emma to start a fashion rental business. Hostetter got to work, making contacts with top children’s fashion design houses and began offering the fancy frocks to a closed atGeist.com / OCTOBER 2018 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 7
group on Facebook. Friends in the closed group began inviting more friends to the group, and quickly the group swelled to more than 10,000. Word about the fashion rentals spread like wildfire, and soon, Hostetter had filled one closet, then another, then the dining room. It wasn’t long before the business outgrew her house, and she found an office space for a showroom in The Edge Building in Fishers. Some might think the idea of renting highend boutique-style children’s fashion is a little unconventional, but it’s nothing new. “It’s the concept of a shared economy, which has been around for a long time
in many countries,” Hostetter says. “It’s just a different spin on the same old idea. It’s appealing because most customers are practical.” The Borrowed Boutique carries chic designs from Tutu Du Monde, Dolly, Butterfly Closet, Dollcake, Nellystella and PrimaFashions, who makes Disneythemed gowns and many more. The Borrowed Boutique will soon be adding top children’s couture designer Anna Triant fashions to their line.

With the tremendous success of the boutique, one might expect that the good doctor has left her lab coat behind, but she hasn’t. Having earned a Master’s degree in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University, her passion for that field is permanent, and she continues to volunteer on mission trips
with non-profit groups. Although medicine and fashion are two vastly different fields, Hostetter claims there are more similarities than you might think. “In medicine, you’re working with a body made of systems, and a business is made of systems,” she says. “A huge part of both things is problem-solving. It’s great to be able to do something on the creative side. I love styling kids for magazines and creating wardrobe concepts. I want people to know that just because you went down one path
in your life before doesn’t mean you have to stay there. I’m not afraid to work hard and learn new things.” Hostetter incorporates her charitable spirit into the boutique too. The Borrowed Boutique partners with Esther’s Children, a small organization that works to end sex trafficking and restore the lives of those who’ve been affected by it by donating a portion of their profits to their cause. The Borrowed Boutique also donates 100 percent of its profits to Esther’s Children
from their Styled to Give events. The events are special photo shoots that The Borrowed Boutique holds for which photographers pay a fee to attend and take photos of fully-styled models. Hostetter is currently working to find a boy’s charity to adopt. Check out The Borrowed Boutique at theborrowedboutique.com. Their showroom is located at 8890 East 116th Street, Suite 290 in Fishers or you can email them at support@theborrowedboutique. com to make an appointment.

Fitzgerald's Catering & Lunch House Is a Lawrence Favorite Writer / Matt Keating Photographer / Ron Wise
Over the course of the last three decades, Fitzgerald’s Catering, 9130 Otis Ave., Indianapolis, has become a longtime favorite among many Lawrence and Central Indiana residents. It’s also become a reliable place to turn to when a special event or dinner party is being planned. “We can be counted on to cater all kinds of events, small and large,” says Co-Owner Dana Fitzgerald. “We can do various styles of catering for a wide variety of gatherings. Every catering event is different, and we ensure everything is just how the client wants it.”
says. “Our ‘Rooster’ chicken sandwich has really taken off. It’s a chili lime chicken with smoked bacon, avocado, pickled onions, white cheddar and chipotle cream cheese on a baguette.” The Rooster is just one example of the highquality food Dana and her staff spend a lot of time preparing, ensuring that Dana’s high standards for perfection and outstanding service, are met. She stresses that everything is delivered on time and tastes fresh. Their clients return because they are reliable. “The Lawrence community has really been supportive of us for a long time,” Dana says. “We get business from all over Indianapolis. We also try to use locally sourced materials and ingredients as often as we can.”
The popularity of Fitzgerald Catering has grown substantially since their humble start. Dana also makes sure she delivers what her clients want by listening closely to “We started off small, but our reputation their plans. Her dedication to the food as a reliable caterer with great food has preparation led to a successful spin-off: helped us continue to grow each year,” Dana Fitzgerald’s Lunch House.

“It’s been very successful since we started a year and a half ago,” Dana says. “It’s a great place for the working man and woman. It’s good food made fast.” Fitzgerald noted that the success of the comfortable Fitzgerald’s Lunch House is due to the hard-working staff and CoOwner Kyle Fitzgerald, her son, who carefully crafts fresh lunch selections. “Kyle has literally been in the kitchen since he could reach wooden spoons,” Dana says. “Professionally, he has honed his craft at GT South’s, Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, Pearls & Ivy Catering, Ocean Prime, Recess and Bluebeard. “Some of the most popular menu items at Fitzgerald’s Lunch House are The Rooster sandwich and our Mac n’ Cheese,” Dana adds. Other options include The Wilbur, a smoked pulled pork sandwich with house

pickle chips on a brioche bun, with a side of house BBQ and The Maurice sandwich, with salami, ham, pepperoni, shaved onion, oregano aioli, shredded romaine, Munster, tomato, and submarine vinaigrette on a baguette, among others. Delicious house made salads include The Popeye Salad, with warm roasted chicken, baby spinach, shaved onions, dried cranberries, toasted walnuts, feta and house poppyseed dressing, a Cobb Salad and a House Salad, among others. Daily specials and daily soups are made from scratch. Fitzgerald’s also has housemade sauces and dressings that are popular with their guests. “My favorite menu item is The Rooster, but every now and again, I really crave the Roast Beef,” Dana says. “We have more seating for our guests to enjoy our food. With the space we just added, we now have 40 seats in the Lunch House. The patio section opened in May. We are also working on a conference room that can be rented for private events and meetings.” Dana noted that she and Kyle “work with The Lawrence Chamber of Commerce to help with fundraising and a number of other public events. We are also supporting the emerging art scene in Lawrence.” Fitzgerald’s Catering & Lunch House is located at 9130 Otis Ave., Indianapolis. MAX CHALLENGE OF FISHERS Client Profile: Tom Britt While I wanted to lose some stubborn fat that had slowly crept into my beltline over the past five years, I also wanted to make some dietary changes. When I met Chad Tunison with the Max Challenge of Fishers back in February, he was in our conference room talking about their unique approach to diet and exercise. Over the years, I guess I’ve become a bit jaded by the fitness industry in general. I was ready for something different, so I signed up to be their first client in Fishers. At the kick-off event on Sunday, June 24, the founder of Max Challenge, Bryan Klein, came and spoke to approximately 100 people that had signed up for the inaugural 10-week challenge. He explained the importance and timing of eating right along with the five-days-a-week commitment to come to a 45-minute exercise class. The only “group” exercise I’ve ever done was with the Geist Jazzercise wearing a “suns out, guns out” t-shirt for charity. One thing Bryan said stuck with me, and honestly it motivated me throughout the 10 weeks. “For every pound you lose, you’ll gain two pounds of confidence,” he said. So, Monday morning rolls around, I weigh in at 189 pounds and snap a few photos. It’s hard to “see” weight coming off, but it’s easy to see the numbers on a digital scale decrease. The 10-week challenge was “on like Donkey Kong.” I found the classes fun - the atmosphere of positive energy and motivation far surpassed the agony of burpees or planking. My “home” class was the 5:30 pm time slot, but I visited the 9:45 am class quite often when I had evening schedule conflicts. Everyone was there for the same reason: to get healthier.
As the weeks progressed, the soreness subsided, my stamina increased and I started grabbing heavier weights. Oh, and the fat started coming off, too. On the last Friday of the challenge, I woke up and anxiously weighed in at 173 pounds, down 16 pounds from where I started. I snapped some photos again and started trying on old blue jeans that I haven’t been able to wear in more than 4 years. Not only did they fit again, they were loose! What makes Max Challenge different is their approach to a healthy lifestyle by helping you tackle both diet and exercise. In my opinion, they accomplish this through their “secret sauce” – positive reinforcement. One of my new Max Challenge friends, Patrick Warner, said it best when he said, “I had a membership to the gym, now I have a family.” After the 10-week challenge is over, you have the option to join their Legacy program. For $99/month, you can come to as many classes as you want and follow their Legacy dietary guidelines. For those that have more weight to lose, they typically do the 10-week program again and again until they reach their goal. For me, I’m going back to stay in shape and keep up with my new diet and hang out with my new Max Challenge family. My “secret weapon” was having my wife,
Jeanne, following the diet plan with me. We both changed a lot of bad eating habits and found a new love of vegetables, lean meats and Ezekiel bread. I tease Jeanne that she needs to pay for half of my challenge since she lost weight, too. Special thanks to Chad, Charly, Sheila and Steve Tunison for bringing this awesome experience to Fishers. Also, a big “thank you” to my group trainer for most of those 10-week classes, Rachel Schaller. And to all my fellow inaugural class challengers – keep “clapping it up.”
THE CHALLENGE STARTS Sept. 24th Can’t start on the 24th? That’s okay, we have members starting their own 10 week challenge every week, and you can join us at any time. Every day, tens of thousands of people nationwide are working towards reaching their health and fitness goals with THE MAX Challenge. Our combination of exciting fitness classes, nutrition coaching, and motivation help our members to achieve INCREDIBLE results in JUST 10 WEEKS!

MAYOR STEVE COLLIER & GUESTS TALK NEW LAWRENCE POLICE DEPARTMENT HEADQUARTERS COMING 2019 Writer / Josh Brown
The Towne Post Live series continued August 30 at Murphys Craft House for the monthly Friday live show. This time, Geist Magazine publisher Tom Britt was joined by Lawrence Mayor Steve Collier, Lawrence Chief of Police David Hofmann and Paul Okeson with Garmong Construction. Recently, the City of Lawrence held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Lawerence Police Department Headquarters. Over the years, Lawrence PD has never really had its own headquarters for operations. The police department’s temporary headquarters has been located at the Lawrence Government Center for 9 years. The new headquarters will be located at 5150 N. Post Road, which is the former location of the Snafu Saloon. “We made it work over those years (at the
Lawrence Government Center), but at the end of the day, it isn’t a police station,” says Hofmann. “We are excited to be moving closer to the community with this new location where we have the most cause for service and interact with people.” The project will cost about $12M and construction is already underway. The city is excited about the new headquarters and a project that has been visualized for quite some time. “I’d been thinking of a new police headquarters before I even took office,” Collier says. “This police station is going to make a big difference in the area. The good news is, that $12M cost will have no impact on taxpayers’ dollars. Taxes will not be going up at all.” Garmong Construction is leading the project with hopes of the new police headquarters being completed in the fall of 2019.
“It will be about a 37,000 square-foot facility,” Okeson says. “The design really has a softer design to it that will be inviting to the public. It will have many needed amenities like a storage facility, a fitness facility, a track, public meeting spaces and more. The chief has really made it a priority to make sure that the building is a part of the community.” Lawrence residents will soon see construction moving forward for the new police station as the Snafu Saloon has already been demolished for the project. A special thanks to owner Craig Stonebraker for welcoming the Towne Post Live team and the City of Lawrence for lunch at Murphys Craft House and space to host the live show. Halloween is the best, but there is one big challenge that comes with this spooky holiday — figuring out what to do with all of the leftover candy. I’ve had those years when you think four jumbo bags will be enough and still end up sending my husband to the store because we’ve gone through it in 30 minutes. But inevitably, you end up with too much whether from your own stash or your trick-or-treater’s. So that’s why you’ll find a number of Hamilton County area Candy Buyback options at the end of this article. First, here is a recipe for my favorite way to use up a little extra Halloween candy. Halloween Candy Cookie Pizza Ingredients:
• Chocolate chip cookie dough • 1/4 c peanut butter • 3/4 c Milk Chocolate Morsels • Candy bars of your choice • Candy eyes and Halloween sprinkles {optional} Directions:
Let the cookie dough sit out of the fridge for a half hour. Spread out cookie dough on a pizza pan, being sure to use cookie spray on the pan. Bake according to directions on the packaging. I used the shortest amount of time to start and kept an eye until it was the perfect golden brown. While the cookie is warm out of the oven, dollop the peanut butter and sprinkle the chocolate morsels evenly. Smear the two together to make the ‘pizza sauce.’ If you’re a peanut butter lover, switch the ratio of chocolate to peanut butter. Chop the candy bars into chunks and sprinkle evenly throughout the pizza. Add the candy eyes and Halloween sprinkles for a festive flair. Cut and serve. Best eaten warm from the oven and with a glass of cold milk. 16 / GEIST MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2018 / atGeist.com

We have all heard the Legend of Johnny Appleseed from when we were children, but have you shared that story with your children? You can create a precious moment with your child, grandchild, niece or nephew by reading the story and doing an activity together every fall. At LeafSpring School, we celebrated his life in our recent Johnny Appleseed Festival. During the week we read many different stories about his fascinating and impactful life. Johnny was a good-natured, unique person with a recognizable attire. He was always barefoot, even in the winter, while wearing tattered clothes and sporting a pan for a hat. Can you imagine? The teachers and children also made
homemade applesauce and Chef Seiji made apple tarts that the kids and parents could top with whip cream. For small children, it was fun to cut open an apple and talk about all the parts such as the core, stem, seeds, skin and peel. Counting the seeds and cutting the apple into pieces provided not only language enrichment but math skills, such as counting and fractions. At the festival, we did coloring, apple printing, played many games, danced to live music and rode on a three-car trackless train through the parking lot. The children will tie these memorable moments with Johnny Appleseed and you. In his honor, our kids and families planted six fruit trees at the school. Every year the families will be able to come and pick apples and peaches. It is something that our school family will always share. We currently have several other fruit trees, and this week each class will pick an apple. Having grown up on a farm, we have a great appreciation for growing food for harvest. Everywhere that Steve and Debbie have lived around the world we have planted and nurtured fruit trees. We encourage you to create a special moment with your child not only at the apple orchard but by planting two trees. You need two trees so that they cross-pollinate each other. Now you have something every year to talk about and enjoy come harvest. If everyone that read this story planted two fruit trees Geist would have beautiful blossoms in spring and bountiful harvests in the fall. And Johnny would be smiling knowing that his mission still lives on in you and your child. 18 / GEIST MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2018 / atGeist.com

How LearningRx Transformed a Young Girl’s Self Image At nine years old, Callie Pinkley was already feeling defeated in school. “Callie had been struggling with reading, comprehension, spelling, memory and processing information,” says her mother Kendra. “She had been receiving tutoring from her teacher, but it wasn’t making an impact. At home, it was always a fight. Fighting to get her to read, to do homework, fighting because she couldn’t remember a word she read two sentences earlier. She hated reading and would often say, ‘I’m stupid.’ She continually struggled despite interventions which never worked. Due to low reading skills, her teacher was suggesting that Callie repeat the second grade. Callie was not on track to pass the IRead and IStep testing. I didn’t know what to do. Then I heard the LearningRx commercial, and it was speaking directly to us, offering hope for Callie’s struggle.” Licensed LearningRx staff tested Callie to pinpoint the exact cause of Callie’s learning struggles.
include improved grades (now on honor roll), advancing three reading levels, greatly improved comprehension, better focus and attention, higher self-confidence and her greatest accomplishment this year — easily passing the IRead test. “Though every student is different, Callie’s improvements are typical at LearningRx,” says Heather Koenig. “On average, we see at least a 3-year increase in reading and comprehension and an IQ score increase of 15-21 points. That is life changing for a struggling student. Parents come to LearningRx not for a band-aid, but for a permanent fix. About 80 percent of learning problems are caused by inefficiencies in how the brain processes information. “We are able to pinpoint the underlying cause of the struggle and create a customized brain training solution that makes learning easier and faster. Students
come in struggling and are transformed in as little as four to six months. The learning skills were already there, we just needed to get to them to unlock the full potential.” Callie graduated from her program several months ago and Kendra is continually amazed at how well Callie is doing and still improving. “We are truly grateful for LearningRx for the permanent changes in our daughter and would highly recommend it to anyone who is struggling in school, home or life skills,” Kendra adds. It’s time to find out why your student continues to struggle despite teaching and tutoring. Find a solution that lasts a lifetime. Brain Training is Life Changing! Call LearningRx today at 317-845-1999 and mention Callie’s story to get $50 off cognitive testing.
“Callie showed severe deficits in certain cognitive skills that are necessary to learn, read and comprehend information,” says Heather Koenig, Director of LearningRx Indianapolis. “Callie had weaker skills like attention, processing speed, auditory processing, memory, logic and reasoning, keeping her from reaching her full potential.” Callie’s action plan was a six-month oneon-one cognitive brain training program at LearningRx. The transformation became obvious by all, including Callie’s teacher, Sarah Miller, who came to Callie’s program graduation. Callie’s amazing improvements

October means leaves changing color, pumpkin carving, flannel wearing and celebrating my favorite season in Indy. Indianapolis has so many things to enjoy from music festivals to hayrides to the apple orchards. I’m sharing a few of our bucket list stops in Indy this month. 1. VISIT AN APPLE ORCHARD
Orchards exist all over the city. We are partial to Apple Works in Trafalgar as we grew up on the southside. They have delicious apple butter, the best apple cider slushies and often have live music for guests to enjoy. You can also pick your pumpkin in their patch for a full day of fall activities.
2. ENJOY A ROOFTOP BAR
These are few and far between in Indy, but Carmel has a couple. Sun King Spirits is a great spot on the city’s northside. You can also check out Livery closer to downtown. You might as well take advantage of the remaining warm days to sit outside and soak up the sunshine with a drink in your hand before we head into winter.
4. VISIT BROWN COUNTY
We are actually doing this the first weekend of October, and we plan to spend a couple of nights tent camping. Brown County is known for its stunning views as the leaves change colors. The town is filled with delicious food, the cutest shops and unique finds. 5. FALL FESTIVALS/FAIRS
3. WATCH A COLTS GAME AT LUCAS OIL STADIUM
I remember going to my first Colts game at the RCA Dome and thought it was so cool. Well, it’s even better at Lucas Oil. It’s fun to watch a game, eat a hot dog and indulge in cheering on the boys in blue. atGeist.com / OCTOBER 2018 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 21
October kickstarts the holiday craft fairs and these are fun for the whole family. You can also check out fall festivals at local parks and orchards. I’ve never been to the Covered Bridge Festival so that one is on my list this month.
6. HALLOWEEN PARTIES
Indianapolis has so many spooky events that all offer something a little different but a costume is required for most. Whether you’re looking for a bar crawl or a festival, there’s a Halloween event for you. We are thinking about hosting our own party complete with bobbing for apples and a couple’s costume contest. 7. HIKE AT TURKEY RUN
This park is another beautiful space to hike with the whole family. Their trails are some of the best we’ve found here in Indiana with clear markers and a variety of difficulty levels. Bring the s’mores, hot dogs and tents to make a weekend of it. 8. VISIT CONNER PRAIRIE
From the corn maze to the Headless Horseman, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Conner Prairie constantly has
entertainment for the family with different 10. ZOOBOO AT THE ZOO activities throughout the day. I personally enjoy Prairietown and look forward to going This one is a must, mom and dad! From this year. crafts to pumpkin bowling, the zoo puts on a great time for everyone. Let the kids pick out their favorite Halloween costumes and 9. WINE TASTING/ NIGHT OUT walk along the Trick-or-Treat Trail. Do you know how many awesome wineries we have in Indy? It’s a fairly extensive As you can see, October is a busy time in list complete with different activities Indiana and this list is not exhaustive. If while enjoying specialty wines. My you wanted to do a different fall activity personal favorites include Mallow Run every day, I’m certain you could. I’d suggest in Greenwood and Daniel’s Vineyard in picking a couple to enjoy and make plans. McCordsville. The leaves will be on the ground before you know it so go enjoy it while you can.

THE ACADEMY VOLLEYBALL CLUB 6635 E 30th St. Suite B Indianapolis IN, 46219 theacademyvolleyball.com 317-545-3880 Writer / Julie Young
If your child is looking to learn a new sport or is eager to take their skills to the next level, The Academy Volleyball Club is ready to serve you. Founded in 2014 by a group of parents and coaches passionate about volleyball and possessing a desire to share the sport with others, The Academy Volleyball Club is a place where athletes of all ages learn to play, train and love volleyball. Headquartered in a 70,000 square-foot facility on the near eastside of Indianapolis, The Academy has additional locations at Grand Park in Westfield and Legacy Courts in Lafayette. “We offer opportunities to every player regardless of their experience or skill level,” says Executive Director Emily Hawthorne. “We know that every athlete is coming to us with a different story and background with the sport, so we provide several different ways for them to get involved, whether that be through one of our club teams, summer camps, beach program, little spikers or even private lessons." A quality experience is at the heart of every program at The Academy. Players ages 4 through 9 can take part in a Little Spikers clinic to learn the fundamentals of the game, while boys and girls ages 6-18 can take part in a variety of training opportunities offered year-round that will continue to build on their skills. The fall youth league is one of the club’s top youth programs, with more than 500 young athletes training each week in the fall, between the three locations. While building youth players is a focus at The Academy, their success in advancing their top players into the collegiate ranks is also a priority. Club teams allow athletes with several months of focused training, strong competition and ongoing development.
Each year, more than a dozen upperclassmen commit to continue their playing careers at the college level, a dream come true for many of them. This past season, Freshman Raven Colvin committed to Purdue University, marking the first Big Ten commitment for the young club. “We are not a one-size-fits-all organization,” Hawthorne adds. “We pride ourselves on our personalized service, welcoming atmosphere, caring staff and knowledgeable coaches who care about player development both on and off the court." Although they are one of the largest volleyball clubs in the state, they maintain the feel of a smaller, intimate club. The Academy cares about keeping costs affordable for families. while providing an exceptional experience. With its extensive fundraising programs, non-travel teams and extended payment plans, The Academy is one of the most budget-friendly clubs in Indiana and committed to making every dollar go as far as possible. “The Academy has been a home away from home for my daughter and family these past few years,” says Robin Snyder, mother of Jill, a club player. Not only have her skills improved, but her confidence, knowledge and love of the game have increased as well. We can really tell that the coaches care about their athletes and the gyms have such a welcoming atmosphere. Being a part of The Academy family has been such a positive thing for us.” For those wanting to become a part of a club team at The Academy, your opportunity is quickly approaching. Club tryouts for 2nd to 8th graders begin in mid-October at all locations. Tryouts for 9th– 12th graders begin in early November. All locations also provide free pre-tryout open gyms this fall, to encourage athletes and their families to visit the facilities, meet coaches and train with some of their top youth and club coaches. The Academy Volleyball Club is located at 6635 E 30th St. Suite B, Indianapolis. Information on all three locations can be found online at theacademyvolleyball.com or by giving them a call at 317-545-3880.

CANDLELIGHT THEATRE at the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site 1230 N. Delaware Indianapolis, IN 46202 317-631-1888 candlelighttheatre.org

CHANGING THE WAY PEOPLE EXPERIENCE HISTORY AND THE THEATRE When you visit Candlelight Theatre at a stunning Italianate mansion in historic downtown Indianapolis, you experience a piece of history that will likely stick with you forever. As a guest, you get to sit in the same room former U.S. president Benjamin Harrison sat in when he lived in the home.
More than 15 years ago, Creative Director Donna Wing performed at the Harrison’s national historic landmark residence for a Halloween event. She had dreamt of starting her own theatre company, and she had been looking for a distinctive venue. Wing, a former dancer, actor and model in New York and Tulsa, had an epiphany walking through the home. “This would be an awesome place to perform theatre,” she realized.
It is a unique partnership between the theatre company and the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site. Candlelight Theatre is the only program in the country performing staged theatre in a former U.S. President’s home.
Instantly Wing began to visualize an audience immersed in the rooms and what it would look like to perform there. It all came together in her mind. Her dreams were further validated when she later realized that President Harrison’s wife, Caroline, actually

hosted theatre performances in the home. “Caroline had a wagon placed in the library and they were performing by candlelight,” says Wing in regards to the inspiration for the theatre’s name. After a 90-minute meeting with the former Presidential Site CEO Phyllis Geeslin, Candlelight Theatre opened its curtains a year later in 2004. Since that time, the partnership has continued to flourish and grow. In 2014, Wing and new CEO Charles Hyde discussed how to further increase Candlelight Theatre’s impact. That conversation resulted in doubling annual productions.
Wing is proud of the partnership and the success that the Candlelight Theatre has experienced in the last 15 years. “As a national landmark, the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site attracts people from all over the globe,” she says. “This venue is unlike any other in the world.” For more information about the Candlelight Theatre and where you can purchase tickets, visit CandlelightTheatre.org or call 317-631-1888 and make plans to attend a performance during the 2018-2019 season. All proceeds go right back to the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site.
Wing, joined by Playwright in Residence James Trofatter, along with seasoned actors, now produce four plays a year at the Candlelight Theatre. They offer a combination of distinctive mysteries, comedies and historically-inspired plays brought together with ambient candlelight. It all comes together to create a one of a kind experience that keeps patrons coming back. These high quality productions are unique in style and theme, and almost always sell out. Fall performances have a ghostly, Halloween theme where audiences experience the entire mansion. Winter features favorite holiday traditions and folklore. The spring production includes a full evening of theatre with three short-act mysteries performed intimately, each using a room in salon style. Summer is hosted either at the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site or a specially selected satellite location where guests are seated in a traditional theatre setting for a full-length play. With a nationally-significant collection of over 10,000 artifacts, and 75-80% of the furnishings in the home original to the Harrison family, this accredited museum exudes special authenticity as a theatre venue. The original furniture in the home has been maintained and is kept in the rooms for guests to see during the performances. The furnishings serve as a stage unlike any other, and add a deep layer of history to the overall experience. The combination of venue and unique theatre offerings have built a strong local following. Season ticket holder Marian Haerle is one of many who keep coming back. “I enjoy theater as well as history,” Haerle says. “Candlelight Theatre allows me to combine great acting in a historical setting. I am always excited to share the experience with family and friends. I have gone so far as to become a member of the Benjamin Harrison [Presidential Site] and a season ticket holder for the theatre. The theatre is not only entertaining but gives me a chance to learn as well.”

future seasons to come!
With the hot summer days comes a slight tendency to desire her to come to an end. Fall brings such a welcome relief to Indiana gardeners. It is the most glorious season for Hoosiers, what with the fall color and fun autumn weekends with tailgates and bonfires. If autumn were a family member, she would most certainly be your mom. She is beautiful, full of activity, brings a wonderful harvest to the family dinner table and swift to teach us to prepare for the
Autumn rains and chilly nights bring on a quick shift in the amount of time left to complete our many outdoor tasks before the hustle of the holiday season begins. This is the time to pack it up, folks! Putting the garden to ‘bed’ for a long winter’s nap is important to her health and important to the abundance of success for the following spring growing season. Remove any plant foliage that has gone to INDY METRO / OCTOBER 2018 / TownePost.com
seed and died back, if left in the garden it will create disease and fungus. No one likes fungus among us! Mulch over any tender perennials so that the winter’s freezing and thawing won’t make the root balls of the plants heave up close to the surface, which then allows them to freeze and die. One of my favorite tasks is planting an abundance of spring flowering bulbs, do you know why? Because I constantly forget what I have planted and where, then when spring comes it is a wonderful surprise.
Croms, however, I make sure I lift and sort out the old from the new croms, let them dry a bit and store them in a box of sawdust indoors, away from varmints. This allows the flowers, like your gladioli and begonias, to stay healthy for the spring planting season to come. Now, a quick word on chemicals, not all are terrible and some are utterly necessary if you want to grow flowers, like roses. But find organic types if you can. And please note that using last year’s chemicals only creates a stronger infestation, due to the fact that a weakened, older chemical is easier to survive as a beetle and strengthens the insect’s resolve, manifesting in a resistant strain of insect that can beat the system. Water features, ponds and fountains need to be cleaned out of autumn falling leaves, drained and covered. I keep our pond running with a heater for the winter, it is always so beautiful when the ground is covered in snow. I use nice hunter green tarps with elastic cords to cover our fountains for the winter, this way it is not too unsightly. Cuttings from the plants you love are a wonderful way to keep the garden growing indoors during the long winter months. I bring indoors some tender annuals and make cutting of my Coleus, Salvia and Hydrangeas. I place the cutting in a terra cotta pot and place in a sunny window. Keeping everything well watered. You will have new garden family members in no time. Enjoy these glorious months ahead, get outdoors and get busy. Wash windows to let in the abundant sunshine and fill your family harvest table with delicious meals of soups and stews. Keep visiting the farmer’s markets as they come to a close and mostly give thanks. Be proud to be a Hoosier, because we truly live in one of the most beautiful spots on the planet. Just all a part of helping you all, “Grow a More Beautiful Life!”
FALL GARDEN CHECK LIST • Compost your annuals • Plant a multitude of spring flowering bulbs • Save seeds from flower heads, dry on newspaper and store airtight • Journal the year’s successes, failures and needed changes • Keep up with leaf removal • Fall application of lawn weed and feed • Empty gardening containers, disinfect well and store • Cut dried Hydrangeas and bring indoors for fall arrangements • Service outdoor equipment • Sharpen, oil and store gardening tools • Add good compost to the garden beds & turn under • Wash windows to let as much sunshine in for winter months • Drain hoses and turn off spigots to prevent freeze • Make any outdoor repairs now • Roast some marshmallows

VARDAGEN FISHERS EXPERIENCING SUCCESS WITH WEST COAST EXPANSION
Owner Jared Ingold recently expanded the store with a pop-up shop in L.A.
Writer / Julie Young Photographer / Brandy Hornback
When Jared Ingold began designing and printing custom t-shirts in a friend’s garage, the Ohio native was not planning to take the fashion world by storm. In 2006, he was merely having fun creating his first ugly Christmas sweater t-shirt. He didn’t expect it to be sold in 45 countries around the world. “It kind of grew from there,” he says. “It” is Vardagen, a graphic t-shirt brand and the creative arm of The Art Press
(Ingold’s print shop located near downtown Indianapolis) that has been in Fishers for the past eight years and has recently begun making its mark on the west coast. According to Ingold, Vardagen designs have been featured on the Urban Outfitters blog, been worn in a national Starbucks commercial and have even been spotted in Hot Topic. “Everything we make is unique,” Ingold says. “We do the entire process ourselves. We hand draw everything. We mix our own inks. We print our designs on the softest garments. We are not just the same old mass
produced mainstream logos and graphics.” Vardagen is a Swedish word meaning “every day” and Ingold says people can interpret the term any way they choose to. A t-shirt is something people wear every day, but a Vardagen shirt is a crazy mix of style, quality and design, with plenty of humor thrown in for good measure. One of their more popular graphics features a skeleton laboring in the fields with the caption, “Working ourselves to death.” It’s an ironic nod to the idea that although we may need to work in order to live, the constant toil can lead to an early grave.
“We are not a ‘Life is good’ brand but a crazy mix of things that come together in one place,” Ingold says “Our designer, Daniel Jewett, started with me about two or three years after I got the business going and everything you see now is his artwork. There is no shortage to his creativity.” Of course, it’s not easy to start a brand out of nowhere or to blaze a trail in the Midwest, but Ingold feels there is no limit to what Vardagen can do. In 2015, Ingold added a Sure Shot espresso bar to his Fisher’s store after seeing them in New York boutiques. It’s something unique for the Midwest, but Ingold felt strongly that the community needed a coffee bar that was not a traditional franchise and when none opened up he said he’d do it himself. “It’s an idea that is ahead of its time,” he says. Of course his most ambitious project to date was Vardagen’s expansion into the Los Angeles marketplace. In 2017, Ingold was determined to see how his brand might fare in a new market. He found a spot in the world-renowned shopping district of Abbot Kenney and created a pop-up store that was only intended to be open for 30 days. “It was expensive but I had a hunch that it would do well,” he says. “We made back all of our money on the project as well as a profit so we extended it until December and now we’ve extended it again for another year.” It was a hunch that paid off and while both stores continue to do well, Ingold says Vardagen is a communitycentered, earth-friendly brand that will never cater to a specific market.

“When Toyota was in Anderson, people were coming from this side of town to buy cars from us,” Kathy adds. “It is exciting now to be in their backyard. People are thrilled that we are closer to them with these locations.”
Being a family-owned company for more than 60 years, it is no surprise that a sense of community and giving back is important to the Harrisons. Mark and Kathy are north side residents as well, living in the Geist area. Over the years, they have stayed involved with local organizations and charities and that will continue to be a focus with Ed Martin Toyota as well. “We have supported Lawrence Township Schools with well over a million dollars,” Kathy says. “We do that through our Ed Martin Legacy Fund Scholarship Program, The McKenzie Career Center, Ed Martin Automotive Careers Training Center, the Lawrence Township Foundation and general support of all of the Lawrence Township Schools. We’ve also made donations to HSE and Noblesville in various ways. We are big supporters of the school systems and that will continue.” Ed Martin has also supported Conner Prairie and sponsored Spark!Fishers this year. The automotive group has already reached out to the Noblesville Chamber of Commerce with plans to get involved in more Noblesville organizations and events as well. When you look back on the history of the company, Ed Martin’s life was seemingly mapped out for him at an early age. Martin’s parents were both successful attorneys, and his father was a Supreme Court Justice for Indiana. It was an afterthought that Ed too would go on to law school and carry the mantle, but he had different plans.
- MARK HARRISON, PRESIDENT OF THE ED MARTIN AUTOMOTIVE GROUP
At just 16 years old, Ed bought his first car in 1946 and later sold it in his parent’s front yard and, just like that, he was hooked. “My dad was such an amazing man,” Kathy says. “He lived the American dream. The reason we are here today is because of one man and his dream. He grew up on Delaware Street in Indianapolis selling ice in the neighborhood and delivering groceries, but he wanted to sell cars. He loved cars. He slowly built this thing, and here we are today.” 38 / GEIST MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2018 / atGeist.com
More than 60 years later, the Ed Martin Automotive Group is now made up of 12 franchises in nine locations. Ed Martin’s legacy lives on through his daughter Kathy and his son in law Mark at the helm as president. Ed passed away in May of 2005, but Kathy says if her father were here today she believes he would be proud. “My dad now has his name on the largest Toyota dealership in Indiana,” Kathy says. “My

We are all aware of food banks that provide hunger relief to those in need, now there’s an organization helping families with a different need — the need for furniture and household items to establish their home. Mustard Seed is a fairly new furniture bank that provides furniture and home-related items to families and individuals throughout Central Indiana who are trying to rebuild their lives after suffering disaster, personal tragedy or other misfortunes.
Mustard Seed opened in the Central Indiana area in 2014 and is housed in a 5,400 square-foot warehouse at 10080 E 121st St. in Fishers. The organization got off to a slow start but has built a solid foundation for the agency today. Executive Director Natalia Blondet joined last year and says the need is great, especially among veterans.
“There is some money involved, but it is a one time fee to help a family or individual rebuild their life,” Blondet says.
“About 75 percent of our clients are veterans, most homeless,” Blondet says. “There’s also victims of domestic abuse and those living in poverty, too.”
Their 4,800 square foot space is donated to them by Fishers Ridge. A Charles Schwab team – doing their volunteer work — helped move furniture to their new warehouse. Then, there are donations that come in every week. Couches and tables for a family to gather in their new living room, maybe a desk for someone who wants to return to school and finish their education and then, of course, bed frames and mattresses, which are deep-cleaned before

BUILDING WEALTH. One personalized portfolio at a time.
“There are donors that have some nice furniture they just don’t need anymore but want it to go to a good home,” Blondet says. “This is a perfect way to get some use out of the furniture. The donor feels good and the recipient feels good and surprised at the quality.” Mustard Seed served more than 80 families last year, and they are already up to 66 families so far this year. Blondet says she enjoys helping clients achieve restored dignity and selfesteem so they can move forward and rebuild their lives. Blondet's parents, who came to America from Mexico, always told her this is the land of opportunity and anything is possible. Today, she shares that mindset with many of her clients that she meets as they pick out furniture from the warehouse. She keeps a collection of photos clients have sent her, such as a little girl asleep in her first bed, to a man with his new furniture on a truck. “I’ve learned what a difference a little furniture can make in a person’s life,” she says. “It’s been amazing.” For more information or to donate visit MustardSeedIndy.org or give them a call at 317-572-5724.

ROLLFAST FOUNDATION TO HOST INAUGURAL ROLL OUT OF DARKNESS BANQUET BENEFITTING SUICIDE PREVENTION
Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photos provided by Ron Wise & Rollfast Foundation
In 2012, Matt Tanner, a former web & graphic designer and avid cyclist, was ready to switch gears professionally so he, along with his wife Christine, created an organization called Rollfast. Originally conceived as a clothing company that made cycling t-shirts, it evolved into a group of cycling organizations. Eager to introduce younger riders to the sport, he began mentoring young kids, showing them the ropes of riding.
People loved it, so the next year they amped it up by bringing in two former Tour de France retired pro cyclists, teammates of Lance Armstrong. “It was incredible to have novice cyclists riding beside cyclists of that caliber,” Matt says. “For those who aren’t into cycling, it would be comparable to basketball enthusiasts getting to play a game of pick-up ball with LeBron James.”
Rollfast also introduced the Sub-4 Challenge where riders complete 100 miles in under four hours. Proceeds for “I wanted to teach them how to be safe all these events go towards the Rollfast riders and good citizens,” Matt says. In 2013, Foundation. the loss of a loved one to it or having made an attempt themselves. Since lack of socialization is one of the reasons people feel hopeless enough to consider taking their own lives, the Tanners wanted to do something to address that. “We’re not clinicians or doctors, but we understand the importance of physical activity in improving mental and physical health,” Christine says. “We want to make the subject less clinical and more conversational — especially for men who really have a hard time opening up.” Sadly, Hamilton County has witnessed a 30 percent spike in suicide in the past year — particularly white males aged 35-64. So that’s the demographic the Tanners want to target. Those who participate in the Gran Fondo are primarily males, aged 45-65 so the demographics definitely overlap.
Thanks to a recent partnership with RemedyLIVE, the Rollfast Foundation now has the ability to run a call center that has 60 SoulMedic listeners on staff 24/7. Anyone feeling suicidal can text ROLL to 494949 and anonymously be connected to someone who will offer a compassionate ear and glimmer of hope. Rollfast has plans to print and distribute 309,000 life-saving Action Cards all around Hamilton County. The cards have questions printed on them such as, “Are you okay? Do you need to talk?” as well as the number to text. “We’re excited about it, but we need to continue our fundraising to be sure there’s enough capital there to sustain this effort,” Christine says.
who survived jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge in 2000, will share his story, WISH-TV’s Drew Blair will emcee and RemedyLIVE will provide a live survey session where attendees are invited to text in responses to questions like, “Who here owns a business and feels a big burden on your shoulders?” or “Who has gone through a divorce or is having marital difficulties?”
One way they plan to do so is through their first Roll Out of Darkness Banquet to be held on October 11. Kevin Hines,
Responses are anonymous, so people can answer honestly. Then the survey results are shared on the screen for everyone to see.
“Eyes will open when they see they’re not alone in the world — that other people right in that very room share the same problems they’re facing,” Christine says. “Baby boomers are not equipped to talk about things like this, so this broaches the conversation.” The Roll Out of Darkness Banquet will be held at the Wellington in Fishers on October 11 at 7 p.m. with cocktails being served at 6 p.m. Individual tickets are $100 or $2,500 per table. TOWN PLANNING ADMINISTRATOR, COUNCIL PRESIDENT TALK THREE TRANSFORMATIVE PROJECTS ON THE HORIZON Writer / Josh Brown Photography Provided by Brian Brosmer & Town of Fortville
Big changes are coming to Fortville, and the future looks bright for the town. Three main projects that have been in the works for several years are closer to becoming a reality for Fortville thanks
to federal grants that will help fund the projects. The projects include pedestrian upgrades to Michigan Street, multiple renovations to Main Street, including new pavement, parking, landscaping, a revamp of the sidewalks, crosswalks and lighting and last, but not least, a trail connecting Fortville to the Mt. Vernon School District. According to Town of Fortville Planning
NORTHERN HALF 46 / GEIST MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2018 / atGeist.com
Administrator Adam Zaklikowski, latest estimates for all three projects total just under $8.8M with Fortville aiming for $9M total in federal grants from the Madison County Council of Governments (MCOG), which is the metropolitan planning organization that represents Fortville. So far, Fortville has collected around $1.2M through the federal funds awarded.
Zaklikowski stressed that the money does not come all at once. Instead, “it comes in chunks.” “It is a federal split, local match,” Zaklikowski says. “What that means is [MCOG] picks up 80 percent of the costs and we pick up the other 20 percent.” Much of the $1.2M that Fortville has already collected has gone straight into funding their first project — the Michigan Street upgrades. The street is the main east-west thoroughfare in town and has long needed new crosswalks, lighting, a flashing pedestrian crosswalk sign and more. This phase of Fortville’s future is the only project that is already underway, and the town is aiming for those renovations to be completed by the fall. The total cost of the Michigan Street project is about $568,000. Main Street has always been a popular part of Fortville’s past and present. That project will involve redoing the infrastructure on Main Street from Church Street to Noel. Renovations will include new pavement, maintaining diagonal parking, street trees, landscaping, “slightly wider sidewalks,” lighting and crosswalks. The Main Street project will cost about $2.5M when all is said and done. Fortville plans for those renovations to start in October of 2019. “Basically, we will be redoing that aging infrastructure on Main Street,” Zaklikowski says. “We will be working with and reaching out to all the business owners and property owners as we get closer to construction to try and alleviate any concerns they might have.”
Fortville recently had its first meeting with Main Street business owners in early September. Most owners say the meeting was a productive one and addressed questions they had, while also keeping everyone on the same page. “Everyone likes the design, and it is really
SOUTHERN HALF atGeist.com / OCTOBER 2018 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 47
going to be gorgeous when the renovations are done,” says Libby Wyatt, owner of StoreHouse. “The biggest concern for most of us is the lack of parking. But the town has been great about answering our questions. They listen to our concerns. They’ve started these meetings now and will be continuing them into next year so
everyone knows what is happening.” “I believe these Main Street renovations will help us become a destination place,” adds The Gypsy Chicks Boutique owner Gina Kammerer. “Even more people will be coming to walk the street and enjoy downtown Fortville.” The third, and final, project — the Mt. Vernon Trail — will be the most costly and biggest project of the three. The project will cost about $5.7M total and will be broken up into three phases. The trail will be eight to 10-feet wide, detached from the roadway with a planting strip and will run on the west side of Maple Street (Fortville Pike) before crossing over at 200 West where it will continue along the east side of that road straight to the Mt. Vernon School Corporation complex and around Fortville Elementary. “Right now, the Mt. Vernon trail project is going through environmental review,” Zaklikowski says. “But we have received overwhelming support for it. It will be a nice amenity for people to get out, bike and get some exercise. It will be a great physical connection between the school district and Fortville, too.”

“Some residents have asked, ‘Does this mean my taxes will go up?’ The answer The town hopes to begin work on the trail in is, no,” Zaklikowski says. “Taxes are not March of 2020. going up for these projects. awards a grant totaling just under $16M. The town filed its plan in September with hopes of becoming one of two finalists selected out of six regions in Indiana. Town officials are excited for its three main projects to pick up speed and to see Fortville grow for many years to come.
“The advantage of these programs to the town and Fortville residents is that the town only has to pay 20 percent of the costs,” Zaklikowski says. “So we are basically getting an 80 percent discount on these improvements. The bottom line with these federal aid projects is it is an excellent way of leveraging limited town resources to bring in additional funds for these community improvements.”
The projects mark major steps in a direction the town has looked forward to going to for quite some time. In recent year’s Fortville has seen an increase in the restaurant and dining scene with local additions like Fox Gardin Kitchen & Ale, Taxman Fortville and, most recently, 305 Wine Garage. Even more development and projects could be coming in the future.
“These are transformative projects for our downtown,” says Fortville Council President Michael Frischkorn. “All of this is about the residents and visitors that we have in our town and how we build upon the community we already have to make it even better. A small town is a great place because you can get involved if you really want to. It is exciting to be at the starting line with these projects for a community that I see, five, 10 years from now, will be even bigger and better.”
So, what does this mean for Fortville residents as these projects are on the horizon?
Fortville is also filing a regional development plan for the Stellar Communities Program. The program
