WAVES OF SUPPORT: GEIST CONSERVANCY DISTRICT STEERING COMMITTEE URGES RESIDENTS TO SIGN PETITION TO SAVE GEIST

Last year, concerned residents along Geist began their campaign to form the Geist Conservancy District. The hope for the group is to sustain the long-term health of the 75year old reservoir. Today, the group has continued to gain support and has officially formed its steering committee under the umbrella of the Geist Lake Coalition. The committee is an all-star cast of about 15 Geist residents and the group continues to grow.

WHITE’S ACE HARDWARE AT GEIST STILL FLOURISHING AFTER MORE THAN 30 YEARS Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Belinda Russell

Since 1978 White’s Ace Hardware has been serving Central Indiana’s tool, hardware, lawn and garden needs, and owner Steve White says his staff ’s focus on customer service and ongoing efforts to remain a onestop shop for locals, has contributed to his 40-plus years of success in the industry. “We love the customer interaction, and we’ve tried to be a shopping destination for

people here,” says White, who worked in computer technology before venturing into the hardware field in the late 1970s. “It’s also fun to try out new products, which you can’t do in many other industries. We recently got into indoor plants, and it’s doing very well. It’s fun because there are always new opportunities and things you can sell.”

store in 1988, and he says the decision to expand into the northeast side of Indy and open a third store was a no-brainer back then, given the development starting to happen in the area.

“We knew the market out in Geist was growing, and we had a commercial broker drive us around to check it out,” White recalls. “It’s funny looking back because it was White, who currently runs Geist and just a bunch of cornfields, but he showed us Carmel Ace Hardware locations with his wife Sharon, owned two locations in Carmel a map of the approved subdivisions that were and Brownsburg prior to opening his Geist going in and we said, ‘We’re in.’” atGeist.com / OCTOBER 2019 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 7

After seven years on Fox Road, White relocated the Geist Store to its current location on 79th Street in 1995, the year White’s son Chris joined the company after working there through high school. With Chris handling dayto-day operations, White has been able to maintain a sizable customer base at his two current locations despite the proliferation of big-box stores and online retailers through the years.

“We’ve always tried to broaden our inventories, and offer a lot of different product lines like lawn and garden,” White says. “After we tried doing lawn and garden at our Carmel location and had success, that’s when we moved our Geist location and built our garden center there. That was a big move for us and it’s done well.”

LOOKING FOR AFFORDABLE DENTAL CARE FROM PEOPLE YOU CAN TRUST?

Mann says the rise in do-it-yourself projects and YouTube instructional videos has ultimately helped business due to the increase in customers taking on home and garden tasks themselves rather than hiring professionals to get the job done. “We get a lot of people who say they watched a how-to video online and need certain things to finish their project,” Mann says. “We try to help them out as best we can.” In the age of online shopping and bigbox-store convenience, Mann says it’s the focus he and his staff have kept on customer service and one-on-one attention that has allowed White’s to continue operating successfully in Central Indiana. “We get a lot of the same customers, some of them almost every day,” he says. “We just did a survey over the winter both in the store and by phone, and pretty much everybody said they like the idea that we’re here as a locally-owned store. I think people like the personal service that you might not get at a bigger store.” White’s Ace Hardware and Garden Center at Geist is located at 10941 East 79th Street in Indianapolis. Ptolemy Henson, a junior at Lawrence North High School, was recently selected as one of the recipients of the 2019 Power of Children Award, which is awarded to youth who see a need in their communities and do something positive to meet that need. Henson is also an aspiring software engineer who codes in six different programming languages. He loves Science, Technology Engineering, and Technology (STEM) education, and decided three years ago to open his own STEM nonprofit organization. Ptolemy named it ELHAS — Every Leaf Has a STEM. Through this organization, Henson has provided weekly STEM activities for children within Lawrence Township on a weekly basis at three Lawrence elementary schools and three Early Learning Centers. He has been doing this since August 2016. Through his nonprofit, he has also been able to reach more than 500 kids through the sponsorship of one of their robotics teams, offered a summer camp activity and participated in STEM night events throughout the Lawrence school district. Henson says he has enjoyed going to school at Lawrence North. “I graduate in 2021,” Henson says. “My favorite part of school, though is going to the McKenzie Career Center. I get to work on computers there. At McKenzie, I have completed my A-plus, and Networkplus certifications. This year, I am excited to take Cybersecurity, in addition to more programming classes. I am also a programmer on the robotics team at McKenzie.”

POWER OF CHILDREN AWARD

Henson is excited about winning the Power of Children Award. “The Power of Children Award (POCA) is presented by the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis,” Henson says. “On November

15th, 2019, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the 15th annual awards event will be held. The award includes a $2,000 grant to contribute to my project. I will also be eligible for a partial university scholarship to Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), University of Indianapolis or Butler University.”

Henson plans on studying Software Engineering in college.

“I can program well in six different programming languages, including Java, Javascript, Python, HTML, CSS and Ruby,” he says. “I got hooked on programming from playing Minecraft. This was how I learned my first programming language, Henson’s interest in STEM started when he which was Java. I then started taking online was younger. courses to learn the rest. I just learned Ruby this summer. I still want to learn more “My mom was always taking me to STEM programming languages and am looking camps around Indianapolis,” Henson says. “I for a programming internship for my senior noticed that these camps had to be paid for. year in high school.” I began to wonder how all students could have access to STEM activities without Henson adds that he “has been interested paying a high price for them. I saw the in science and math since youth, and I need to distribute STEM education to my just enjoyed using technology. ceremony, I was inspired to start my nonprofit organization. They encouraged me to use my youth to help others, and I felt this was the perfect way to help others while doing what I love to do.” Henson adds that the name ELHAS is based on an analogy. “Citizens are compared to leaves, and the fact that all leaves have a stem represents how every person can learn about STEM,” Henson says. “This relates to the mission of ELHAS, which is to distribute STEM education to all people at no charge. “I started at the Mary Castle Early Learning Center (MCELC) in the fall of 2016,” Henson says. “Each week I came up with a different idea to use with the kindergartners to help them get excited about STEM. We used hex bugs, raced balloon rockets, did hands-free finger painting (using magnets) and conducted a snowman investigation. After that, Hendon was invited by Stephanie LaPlante, Director of Early Childhood Education in Lawrence, to run clubs in three of the Lawrence elementary schools in 2018. “These schools are Brook Park Elementary, Winding Ridge Elementary and Sunnyside Elementary,” he says. “When I switched to the elementary schools, I started using the Engineering is Elementary curriculum. With this curriculum, we researched topics and experiments with more depth. A few of these were learning about avalanches and designing ways to prevent their damage,

as well as learning about electricity and building electric circuits.”

them money to help their team, too,” he says. “I hope to use the Power of Children award money to do more of that. I hope that another child will get hooked on STEM like I am through these activities.”

Henson’s first summer camp was offered during the summer at a local church. “They had read about the flood and Noah’s ark in the Bible, and I built on that knowledge by talking with them and having them learn about, design and create dams and levees. I was nervous, as this was my first time, but it was fun.” Henson and the ELHAS group also participated in a STEM night at Amy Beverland ELC and helped students make neon lava lamps with their families. “I helped sponsor a robotic team by giving

Henson’s mom, LaMonica, is very proud of her son. “Ptolemy won’t tell you that he had a 4.49 grade point average, but I will,” she says. “He’s on the National Technical Honor Society and is currently serving on the board of the JumpIN for Healthy Kids (a community-wide multi-sector effort to give children and families real opportunities to make healthy choices) this year. He’s also participated in the United Way youth leadership program.”

FORTVILLE BUSINESS CENTER DEBUTS NEW CO-WORKING SPACE

distractions so you’ll feel better about the work you’re doing,” Stites adds.

The Fortville Business Center’s new coworking space provides a professional office setting as well as the flexibility needed for those who wish to avoid the expenses of leasing or purchasing office space while freelancing or getting a fledgling business off the ground.

For $95 per month or $950 for the year, members get 24/7 pin-code access to the co-working space, which includes wifi, a coffee bar, document shredding, onsite notary services and, perhaps most importantly, a quiet place to focus and get some work done.

“If you can get things done at Starbucks or Panera, you could probably get 10 times more done in a co-working space,” says Rockford Stites, a Selma, Indiana, native who handles day-to-day operations at the Fortville Business Center with his wife Bonny, a seventh grade math teacher at Mt. Vernon Middle School.

Stites says the co-working space concept is an outgrowth of his and Bonny’s larger vision of providing a much-needed office and commercial hub for local residents and businesses.

“It’s a professional environment no matter what kind of business you’re in, and it can help you keep focused and cut down on

of the town,” says Stites, who works as regional vice president and an investment advisor representative with Primerica. “We tried to think of what we could do to attract more commercial businesses to town.” The couple began brainstorming last year for ideas on how to make use of the approximately 7,000-square-foot business center’s second floor, in which Stites’ own office is also located. Initially uncertain about co-working spaces, they soon found the concept has been catching on locally in recent years.

“I had heard of co-working spaces but had never been to one,” Stites says. “In the spring “What our focus was when we first took of 2018, we heard about Launch Fishers and over the building was that there’s all kinds of were blown away by it. We thought that that great retail and restaurants doing a great job kind of concept made sense for the open on Main Street, and we wanted to provide space upstairs in the Business Center. We a more traditional commercial services knew we could have a dozen or so folks in anchor to the business owners and residents there without being crowded.” atGeist.com / OCTOBER 2019 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 15

IT’S A PROFESSIONAL ENVIRONMENT NO MATTER WHAT KIND OF BUSINESS YOU’RE IN Currently, the Fortville Business Center coworking space includes three private rooms, and Stites says a few minor renovations will be undertaken in the near future to meet various professional needs for members. “We’re going to put some semi-private workstations in one of the private areas and that way there will be a kitchen and dining area, a conference room with a table, a head-down workspace area and then another small-team lounge,” he says, adding that bike racks and additional parking are also in the works. “We’re also going to make the kitchen and dining area into a convertible space with a projector and screen for presentations, client appreciation dinners and other functions.” First-floor tenants have free access to the co-working space, and members and tenants alike can reserve the space for nights and weekends on a first come, first served basis for private events. Stites says the co-working space is much more than just a shared office environment — there are also networking benefits not always found while working at a coffee shop or library. “If you’re a member of the Business Center as either a tenant or a co-working space member, there’s not only the aspect of networking with each other but also increasing the circle of businesses that you know so someone there could refer you to someone else that can take your business to the next level,” Stites says. The Fortville Business Center is located at 412 South Maple Street. Call 317-6605080 or visit fortvillebusiness.com for more information.

LOCAL ARTIST MOLLY SAHM CREATES UNIQUE MURAL & MOSAIC PIECES AROUND INDY

Throughout her college career, Molly Sahm was honing a craft outside the classroom that is now as big a part of her life as the skills she was acquiring from her in-class studies.

basketball team, Sahm was asked by her father Ed, who founded a string of popular Indy restaurants starting back in the 1980s, to create a few mosaics to be displayed at a couple of his eateries. She took to the task with relish, igniting a passion for an endeavor that she now works at on a near-daily basis.

While studying exercise science and sports performance at IU, and subsequently Marian University where she played for the women’s

“I always liked art but really started diving into it in college,” Sahm says. “I did take an independent art class in high school that

got me going on mosaics. I started painting in college for extra money, and then when my dad asked me to do some mosaics for his restaurants I really got into it and it kept going from there.” Before graduating in 2015, Sahm started posting images of a few of her paintings and mosaic works on her Instagram page and before long began receiving not only purchase offers, but also commission requests.

“I like painting but I would say mosaics are my favorite to do right now, but it’s a love-hate relationship and each piece requires a lot of patience,” she says. “I have to find a good podcast or something good to listen to to get me started, and then I’m off and on my way. With each piece I do now, I try to make it more difficult and have more detail.” Sahm’s mosaics and paintings range from pop culture images to sports logos to abstract pieces, and she was able to put several of her works on display recently during art shows at Scarlet Lane Brewing downtown and One Up Arcade Bar in Broad Ripple. “I’d like to do a show at a place like Liter House, and not just have other artists but incorporate bands or comedians around Indy,” she says. “Almost like a farmers market but for art. That’s something that I really want to look into later this year.” No stranger to the family restaurant biz, Sahm fondly recalls working at several of her dad’s establishments growing up, and these days when she’s able to tear herself way from her art workstation, she heads to Half Liter Beer & BBQ Hall in Broad Ripple to help out her brother Eddie, who runs the place. “I always worked at The Roost in Fishers through high school and a little in college,” recalls Sahm, who resides in Fishers but has plans to relocate to Broad Ripple later this year. “Half Liter is fun and has a great environment. I do art Monday through Friday and then work there on the weekends. I’ve always loved Broad Ripple.” Sahm says learning the craft of mosaics has not only stimulated her own creativity but has made her more receptive to others’ ideas along the way. “I used to break glass with a hammer and try to find pieces to work with, and that took a long time then I learned

I’ve never tried epoxying, so working with chairs that are functional and that I can mosaic is something I want to explore. Right now I’m just trying to get all the projects that I have lined up for people done but that would be a nice next step.” For more info on Molly Sahm’s artwork, visit instagram.com/ getyousahm_art.

“We all share the same philosophy,” Forney says. “We don’t operate by default for our clients. We drive results for them by doing more than the competition. Jamie has even been known to go walk the family dog for her clients during a showing if no one else was available. That extra level of care is what makes all the difference!” Both Boer and Forney come from humble beginnings. Both realtors have built their brand and success through hard work and dedication. Boer first met Forney in 2012 at Sherwin Williams, where he was a manager. He was looking for a property, something to flip, so their search began. “It was actually one of his first flips,” Boer says. “Eric had all of these innovative ideas that made his vision and project exceptional. This experience ignited his passion for real estate and he later got his license. I knew he would excel in the industry because of his drive and commitment to others.” “Jamie helped me purchase an investment property,” Forney adds. “So, I know, firsthand, what her level of service and expertise looks like.” The two quickly formed a friendship. As Boer recently branched off on her own, Forney reached out about the potential opportunity of the two joining forces. OCTOBER 2019

“As a team, we are passionate about empowering people. We believe that common people working together fuel our uncommon results.” - Eric Forney “There was no hesitation at the idea of teaming up,” Forney says. “My vision has always been about creating impact for people. We aim to elevate the customer experience and build long-term relationships. Jamie’s core values, as a person, align with that vision. One of her core values is focusing on the needs of others before her own. She genuinely cares about people and helping make their lives better. This was a no-brainer decision.” Boer and Forney Group offer a full concierge service, which sets them apart from other real estate agencies. The team’s above-and-beyond mindset ensures their clients are taken care of throughout the entire home selling process. One of the concierge services is staging. Boer is certified in staging and redesign. “Combining her real estate and staging experience, Jamie possesses the knowledge to stage your home to sell,” Forney says. “She makes recommendations that are creative and resourceful, so potential buyers can focus on the positives. Our listings sell faster and our sellers walk away with more at the closing table.”

For Forney, he’s spent years building up a nationally renowned team that is focused on supporting their clients. “His leadership speaks for itself, as well as his relentless work ethic,” Boer says. “As a team, we are passionate about empowering people,” Forney adds. “We believe that common people working together fuel our uncommon results.” Being community-focused is important to them, too. In 2020, Forney Group will be entrenched in the community as one of the anchors at Hub and Spoke design center. “This location will make such an impact for our clients and the residents of the Fishers and Geist area,” Boer says. “This is an amazing time for all of us, and we can’t wait to serve our community one home at a time.” For more information on Jamie Boer Homes and the Forney Group call 317-975-1875. 17TH ANNUAL DRUMSTICK DASH RETURNS TO INDY POPULAR ALL-AGES RACE BENEFITS WHEELER MISSION Writer / Jon Shoulders Photography Provided

This Thanksgiving Day why not help to increase awareness for a worthy cause, while simultaneously increasing your own appetite with some exercise before loading up on turkey?

Development Officer Steve Kerr had been trying to drum up a fundraising idea that would serve as the signature annual event for Wheeler, which helps the homeless and disadvantaged with meals, temporary shelter and various programs. While at a Thanksgiving Day race with his family in Ohio, Kerr realized how fun it could be for Hoosiers in Central Indiana to have a similar race to benefit Wheeler, and once he realized there was no existing Thanksgiving Day race in Indy, he got to work.

Those who raise at least $250 will have their entry fee refunded down to one penny and can opt to have their registration packet mailed directly to their residence for free. In 2014, Wheeler began the #OuttaTownDashAround, which allows those who can’t attend, or who prefer to run in their own neighborhood, to participate virtually by joining a Drumstick Dash

FRIGHTENING FESTIVITIES

CONNER PRAIRIE’S HEADLESS HORSEMAN FALL FESTIVAL RETURNS WITH TRICKS & TREATS FOR ALL

Writer / Annelise Hanshaw Photography Provided

The customarily calm prairie gets a hearty dose of Halloween during the month of October. Orange smoke puffs out from under the covered bridge as a jack-o-lantern light swirls overhead. One-third of the prairie land is combed back for a haunted corn maze, and the smell of kettle corn and apple donuts fills the air. Drawing in nearly 300,00 visitors, the Headless Horseman shocks visitors both young and old. The Headless Horseman combines a traditional fall festival with the spookiness of Halloween. Thrill-seekers and cautious guests alike can appreciate the event in a variety of activities and shows. Conner Prairie’s staff caters to all ages in details that go above and beyond other events. The hayride, a fall staple, is amplified during the Headless Horseman. The tractor zigs

through almost all of Conner Prairie’s historic grounds while lights, sound effects, animatronics, and actors awe riders. When the sun goes down, the ride gets spookier with creatures jumping out at the carts. To get more of a scare, a section of the corn maze is dedicated to adrenaline junkies. After dark, those who dare can enter the haunted maze and be spooked by costumed volunteers. These eerie actors follow and jump at the maze runners. It’s great for older children that want a bit of a thrill. There’s also separate long and short routes for those who prefer a traditional corn maze experience. Conner Prairie’s corn maze is ranked eighth in USA Today’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards. Senior manager of programs Mark Wehlage says Conner Prairie’s setting sets the almost 12-acre corn maze apart. The prairie setting amplifies as the foliage glows orange and yellow. October is Wehlage’s favorite month at Conner Prairie. In fact, it’s become a family tradition. OCTOBER 2019

“I couldn’t wait to bring my daughter to the Headless Horseman,” Wehlage says. “And now, she’s expecting, and I can’t wait to bring my grandkids to the festival.” Wehlage’s daughter and son-in-law helped out in the haunted corn maze last year, making it a family affair. He knows he’s not the only one sentimental about the festival. “Because this festival has been around for so long, I think people enjoy the nostalgia of bringing younger generations to this event,” Wehlage says. One of the kids’ favorite parts is sitting alongside their parents watching the marionette show. The show tells a 10-minute version of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” while incorporating modern pop culture. It puts a twist of unpredictability on a classic. “Parents walk away scratching their heads, but the kids say it’s their favorite show,” Wehlage says.

Other shows include a rhythmic experience for the little ones or a magician that always wows the crowd. Various characters tell spooky stories throughout the event too. In a craft called the “White River Monster Maker,” kids can make a popsicle-stick puppet or a refrigerator magnet. It’s customizable, so their monsters reflect their imagination. More hands-on activities are scattered in the Midway Games. Kids dive into a pit of thousands of corn kernels to dig for bones. Some just enjoy the sensory stimulation of the kernels running between their fingers. Others line up for the classic test of strength, hoping to ring the high striker bell. There’s a giant plinko board with a candy coin, pumpkin bounce houses, pirate ring toss, and graveyard mini golf. Everything is styled for Halloween, like the pumpkin bowling game. The pins look like zombies, and the bowling ball is painted to look like a pumpkin. Each win gives a raffle ticket for prizes like Conner Prairie memberships and gift cards. Rooted in Indiana history instead of Halloween is the 1859 Balloon Voyage, available for an additional fee at Headless Horseman. It commemorates Indiana inventor John Wise’s air balloon that brought the first successful airmail delivery in the U.S. Conner Prairie releases their helium balloon 370 feet in the air for guests to experience a piece of state history. Headless Horseman is a Conner Prairie favorite. Bring the little pirates, princesses, superheroes, and ghouls for an October adventure. The night will bring giggles, cheers, smiles and maybe even a few screams. Conner Prairie is located at 13400 Allisonville Rd in Fishers. The Headless Horseman runs on select dates throughout October. Visit connerprairie.org/explore/ things-to-do/headless-horseman/ for ticket prices and more information.

HOOSIER RAISES AWARENESS FOR MALE BREAST CANCER Wrier / Jon Shoulders Photography Provided

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and many people likely associate the disease exclusively with women. After all, according to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, more than 99 percent of those who get breast cancer are indeed female. Nevertheless, Brownsburg resident Darrell Skaggs has made it his mission to raise awareness of the fact that many men also suffer from this disease, since his own diagnosis almost a decade ago. In 2010, after waking up with a sharp pain in his side, Skaggs’ doctor diagnosed a gall bladder attack and ordered a CT scan after determining he’d need surgery. The test result showed a mass approximately the size of a half-dollar in his left breast, and a subsequent ultrasound and several biopsies confirmed Stage 2 hormone receptorpositive breast cancer. “It never occurred to me that it could actually be cancer,” says Skaggs, a Kokomo native and two-year Vietnam war veteran who works in security for Henry Schein, a medical supply

distributor. “I have four sisters, none of whom, thankfully, have been diagnosed with breast cancer, and there is no history of the disease in our family, so breast cancer was the farthest thing from my mind. And also, men don’t get breast cancer, right?” According to the American Cancer Society, about 2,670 men are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer in the U.S. just this year. Skaggs says that number has been increasing through the years, at around 2,000 back in 2012, and adds that men need to be proactive when lumps or other irregularities are noticed, since men typically aren’t scanned as a matter of course like women. “There’s a large percentage of those men who die because they ignore the symptoms and they just don’t think about it,” he says. “Since men aren’t scanned for breast cancer a man has to depend on himself to look out for signs - if there’s soreness or a lump, or anything out of the ordinary in the breast area, he should get it checked out.” Skaggs says the initial embarrassment he felt at being diagnosed with what is largely OCTOBER 2019

known as a disease affecting women was a challenge, on top of the cancer battle itself. “I went for a whole year not really even talking about it due to it being embarrassing at first,” he recalls. “My family was encouraging me to tell my story though, so I decided to put it out there.” Skaggs was contacted by the Dallas-based Susan G. Komen organization about becoming an official Ambassador, which involved sharing his personal story with others to raise awareness. In 2012 and 2013, Skaggs was chosen along with 10 other breast cancer survivors to be a Model of Courage for Ford Motor Company’s Warriors in Pink program, for which he traveled to California and Texas to film several commercials and a documentary relating his experience. Along the way, he also began volunteering for the American Cancer Society’s Reach to Recovery program, to offer conversational support for men all across the country suffering from breast cancer. “I found that a lot of other men like me

were embarrassed to talk about it, and I wanted to change that,” Skaggs says. “I found that men don’t have breast cancer support groups like women do. So if a man calls the American Cancer Society and wants a man to talk to about breast cancer, they contact me. I’ve talked to people from California, Illinois, Ohio, Minnesota and Michigan.”

Since 2014, Skaggs has helped to successfully lobby Indiana legislators to proclaim the third week in October Male Breast Cancer Awareness Week, and he says other states have followed suit. “It’s not to take anything away from women — it’s just to take a week of Breast Cancer Awareness Month to acknowledge male breast cancer,” he says.

Halloween Safety Tips for Trick-or-Treating Writer / Abigail Hake Photography Provided

Kids (and parents) love the magic of Halloween. Walking around at night, in costume, collecting candy, what’s not to love? But there’s many aspects of the evening that get parents feeling nervous, which is why safety for the evening is especially important. Did you know only about one-third of parents discuss Halloween safety with their kids? But keeping Halloween safe is very important, not only for the safety of the kids, but also to keep the magical feeling of the night. Here are a few tips to help keep your little ones safe while trick or treating this year:

you head out, it will be by the time you head back as most fall nights are. Make sure to layer up if it’s going to be cold because you don’t want to be frozen in the middle of your trick or treating route!

of an emergency with your kids. Children can easily become lost on a dark Halloween night and these are small and easy reminders to practice and are important things to know for every day too.

STAY WITH YOUR CHILDREN Join in on the fun and walk with them, even dress up if you like! At our house we take turns, one person hands out candy for an hour while the other takes the kids out and then we swap. If that’s not an option, maybe try to connect with a group of friends to trick-or-treat together. You might also try to plan to have your kids go out with your neighbors, girl scout or cub scout troop, or even cousins. Always make sure there is some sort of adult supervision.

TRICK-OR-TREATING ETIQUETTE Make sure to only visit homes with a porch light on and only approach doors that are well lit. This one can be tricky these days with automatic lights and decor. Use your best judgment and always remind the kids to never enter a home or car for a treat!

In case you do get separated from your CHECK THE WEATHER AND BE PREPARED kids, make sure to review phone numbers, Chances are it’ll be chilly, and if it isn’t when addresses and how to contact 911 in case OCTOBER 2019

STAY VISIBLE If your kids are going to be out after dark then blinking LED safety lights are a great addition to the back of their costume or candy bag! Pick them up at any sporting goods store or order from Amazon. Not only will they stand out for you to see, but they’ll also attract the attention of others,

keeping them extra safe. Reflective tape is another option that will make your child more visible when added to the back of their costumes or all sides of their candy bag. BE COMFORTABLE While we know some costumes require the right shoe (hello Cinderella), let’s be real on Halloween night while trick-or-treating, no one wants their feet to be uncomfortable. Most costumes can handle rain boots or tennis shoes depending on the weather. Remember, the longer your feet feel good, the more candy you can get! Also, try to keep props to a minimum. If it’s part of the costume, make sure they are easily carried and it doesn’t have sharp edges or points. Try adding a strap to a sword, shield or really anything, so they can be thrown over the shoulder or held on your child’s back while walking from house to house. ADVANCE PLANNING Decide what streets you want to hit and which you’ll skip before you head out. There’s nothing like walking a route that’s too far for a little and getting stuck carrying them home. Make sure the route you pick is manageable for whatever ages are heading out the door. And don’t forget to always use the sidewalk and walk don’t run. Most injuries on Halloween are pedestrian injuries, so make sure to review routes, use flashlights and take your time! CANDY CHECK We have all heard the horror stories of the candy that’s made kids sick and had harmful things in it. Maybe they were true, maybe they weren’t, but it’s still a good idea to check your kids’ candy for safety purposes and maybe pick out some of your favorites while you are doing it. Look for partially opened pieces, ones that look questionable or types the kids might be allergic to. There’s most likely going to be plenty, so pulling out one or two because they don’t seem like great quality will be fine. By keeping these ways to stay safe, you are sure to have a fun and happy Halloween with family and friends. OCTOBER 2019

CITY OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCES ITS THREE FISHERS TEST KITCHEN CHEFS Writer / Samantha Kupiainen Photography Provided by the City of Fishers

After much anticipation, the Fishers Test Kitchen is slated to open in October at The Yard. When it opens its door to the public, it will also welcome four fresh faces to the Fishers culinary community — Chef Salazar, Chef Berg, Chef John and Chef Kim. The Test Kitchen is unlike any other restaurant concept in town. Each chef will bring their own restaurant concept to the kitchen hall for a year or two. In that time, they’ll have the opportunity to test and refine their restaurant concept and build a following. At the end of their stay at the Test Kitchen, each chef will hopefully launch their own restaurant or food endeavor. Once a chef leaves, a new chef will take their spot and bring their new and exciting tastes to the Fishers food scene. Here are the inaugural chefs of the Fishers Test Kitchen. OCTOBER 2019

CHEF JOHN AND CHEF KIM

CHEF CARLOS SALAZAR

When chefs Jung Gyu Kim, “Chef John” and his brother Jung Min Kim, “Chef Kim,” launch their Test Kitchen concept, Korave, they’ll also give the community a taste of their Korean heritage. John and Kim moved to the U.S. from South Korea in 2012 and 2009, respectively. Kim was inspired to pursue cooking full-time after John pointed out how impressive his knife skills were in the kitchen. After attending culinary school at Salt Lake Community College in Utah, the brother-duo operated a food truck there in 2017, and again in Fishers when they moved to the Midwest last year. When they launch Korave, guests can expect fast and fresh Korean inspired dishes, such as barbecue beef poutine and barbecue chicken rice bowls. The duo’s unique concept also includes fermentation — specifically vegetables and vegetable juices. With few Korean cuisine options in Fishers, the brothers are excited to introduce their restaurant concept to the people of Fishers — fast, fresh and delicious. After their time at the Test Kitchen, they hope to open a few locations across Fishers and hopefully a franchise over the state of Indiana.

This fall, Salazar will debut his concept at the Test Kitchen — Lil Dumplings. Regarded as one of Central Indiana’s top young chefs, Salazar’s restaurant will be his take on global street food while tapping into his Filipino heritage. He first started serving up Asian cuisine because he wanted to challenge himself with something he wasn’t familiar with. Even though he’s always had a knack for cooking, Salazar graduated from The Chefs Academy in 2008, an Indianapolis-based culinary school. His most recent endeavor has been at the Rook in Fountain Square, where he serves as a chef and co-owner. He’s most excited about the Test Kitchen because it’s bringing him back to his roots. Salazar grew up in Carmel and Westfield and now lives in Fishers with his wife and kids. After the Test Kitchen, he hopes to open up a restaurant in Fishers – the restaurant he’s always wanted.

CHEF LEISHA BERG When Chef Berg brings her concept to the Fishers Test Kitchen, West Coast Nook, guests can expect to taste a combination of flavors from her past experiences. The Miami-native most recently relocated to Fishers after working in the music industry in Los Angeles, which is where she draws inspiration for her Latin foods and flavors. After switching careers, she enrolled in Ivy Tech’s culinary program to begin her new journey. Restaurant patrons can expect her dishes to be simple foods with few and interesting ingredients. Berg describes her restaurant as “bringing California comfort food to the Midwest.” Growing up, the kitchen was always the beating heart of Berg’s house and served as a place of helping her mother out and making memories. Through the Test Kitchen, she hopes to expose the community to new things, and that they’ll form their own experiences and memories through her food. After her time at the Test Kitchen, Berg hopes to have her own catering and private chef business with her partner and fellow chef, Ryan Moore.

The buildings of the Inn campus had a past life as part of Fort Benjamin Harrison, once a major military facility named after the 23rd United States President, an Indianapolis native. Besides the main lodge, which has 27 rooms, there is the Harrison House with 16 rooms and two former officer homes, each with three bedrooms. The fort’s officers’ club is now the Garrison, a dining and conference center as well as home to the pro shop for the 18-hole Fort Golf Course. According to Dylan Allison, Interpretive Naturalist at Fort Harrison State Park, the lodge was originally the post hospital when Fort Harrison opened in 1906. In the early 50s it became post headquarters. When the fort was decommissioned in 1991, the building was sold. It was a private hotel for only a couple of years before being purchased by the state. “It’s really a unique spot in terms of the history it has,” Allison says. “One of the elevators in the building is interesting. It’s not very wide and quite narrow, just perfect for a stretcher. Although they are updated, the rooms have a historic

feel. The inn has all the amenities found in modern hotels including an exercise room.” Admission to the park and all it has to offer is included during the guests’ stay. Hikers can enjoy 14 miles of walking paths and seven miles of trails dedicated to mountain biking. There are four reservable picnic areas. The Visitors’ Center has exhibits that highlight nature and the history of the area plus animal displays such as frogs, snakes and turtles. Fall Creek runs through the north side of the park which makes fishing and canoeing accessible. For horse lovers, there is a saddle barn operated by an independent contractor.

“In the winter, the sledding hill is very popular,” Allison adds. “It’s possible to see 100 to 200 people come out after the first snowfall “There is always a good mix of people,” Allison adds. “I see families running of the season. around and enjoying the inn’s green space “Many people stay at the inn for the history. as well as retired couples walking outside. Voters to Decide On Lawrence Township Schools Referendum In November Writer / Jon Shoulders Photography Provided by Lawrence Township Schools

An upcoming Lawrence Township Schools referendum would provide $191M to 10 school facilities if passed by voters on November 5. The referendum, approved by the Board of Education on May 6, is the first in the history of Lawrence Township Schools, and Dr. Dana Altemeyer, Communications Director for the Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township, says the funds would be used exclusively for renovation projects.

“It’s important to note that this is not an operational referendum to cover dayto-day expenses,” Altemeyer says. “Our district is financially secure, and this is only for needed construction and renovation projects” Since 2015, MSD of Lawrence Township, which serves 16,035 students daily, has undertaken a Blue Ribbon Facilities Plan to address the physical needs of the area’s schools. To date, seven of the 11 elementary schools have been renovated, and new stadiums, end zone buildings, and auditoriums have been built for Lawrence Central and Lawrence North high schools. This year, Amy Beverland and Sunnyside elementary schools are being renovated. atGeist.com / OCTOBER 2019 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 49

“The Blue Ribbon Facilities Plan has all been done so far without going to the taxpayers — about $157M of work,” Altemeyer says. “The district hired a firm to come in and do a feasibility study of our high schools to really see what they need, and it was determined that they need a lot. The district decided to add the needed renovations to the remaining four elementary schools and four Early Learning Center sites to this referendum to make it a district-wide approach. Because of the way the laws work, public approval is needed for projects of this scope.” Precisely $161M of the total dollar amount included in the referendum would be directed toward Lawrence Central and

Lawrence North high schools — including $50M investment in HVAC, plumbing and electrical work. The remaining $30M would go to Brook Park, Forest Glen, Oaklandon and Winding Ridge elementary schools, as well as the four early learning center locations at Amy Beverland, Brook Park, Mary Castle and Winding Ridge. Lawrence Central High School has not seen a major renovation since 1993, 30 years after its original construction, and Lawrence North has not undergone a major renovation since it was built in 1976. “A large chunk of the funds is infrastructure related — HVAC and those things that you don’t see,” Altemeyer adds. “And then we’re also really hardening the buildings in the area of safety and security. So there will be additional cameras, reduced entry points, internal swipe cards and other proactive steps to make sure our buildings are safe by 21st century standards.” According to Altemeyer, Lawrence Township is the last public school district in Marion County to pursue a referendum, and neighboring Hamilton and Hancock counties have both successfully passed referendums. Renovations to the 10 facilities included in the referendum would address the following areas: •R eplacement/upgrading of HVAC, mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems • Replacement of roofs • Resurfacing of parking lots • Updating of cafeterias/kitchens •A dded security features to main entrances and throughout buildings, including expanded security camera systems •U pdates to all classrooms and hallways to accommodate current and future curricular needs •R enovation of science labs •P rovision of flexible learning spaces, including updated and expanded areas for performing arts •A ddition of multiple entrances/exits to the properties to separate bus and parent traffic 50 / GEIST MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2019 / atGeist.com

To support the projected cost, Lawrence Township is asking for $0.2499 per $100 of assessed property value, which is determined by starting with a home’s market value and subtracting a homestead deduction, a supplemental homestead deduction and a mortgage deduction (visit the link below for a tax calculator to determine tax impact). The tax wouldn’t be collected until 2021, and if passed the funds would be paid over 20 years.

The referendum vote will take place on November 5, 2019, and if passed by voters, construction on the proposed projects is slated for June of next year after students leave for the summer.

FILLING A GAP FISHERS DISABILITY INCLUSION IN THE WORKPLACE BUSINESS NETWORKING GROUP EMPOWERS LOCAL BUSINESSES & EMPLOYEES Writer / Samantha Kupiainen Photographer / Brian Brosmer

The City of Fishers and select businesses noticed there was one group missing from its workforce — those from the physically and mentally disabled populations. After identifying that gap and recognizing the need to fill it, a group of residents came together to form the Fishers Disability Inclusion in the Workforce Business Networking Group. “Our goal is to help educate employers on the benefits of hiring individuals with disabilities and educating them on what to do if you hire an individual with disabilities,” says Chrissy Pogue, co-sponsor of the group. She also serves as a transition specialist for Hamilton Southeastern Schools and represents the school district within the network. In addition to educating employers about the benefits of hiring disabled employees, the group is also looking to bring more awareness of how businesses can look to hire people with disabilities.

“We wanted to be more of a connector and have opportunities for HR representatives and businesses to speak with some of the providers that are providing the assistance to these employers with regard to job shadowing and job training,” says Cecilia Coble, Fishers City Councilor At-Large.

people interested in hearing more about it,” Pogue says. “For the most part, it’s the people that would train the individuals meeting with the people that would hire them.” The group strives to make it known that those with disabilities are eager to work and enrich the workforce in more ways than one.

MEMBERSHIP

Pogue co-sponsors the group alongside Michelle Steltz, executive director of finance and operations for Opportunities For Positive Growth, Inc. In those roles, the duo helps schedule meetings and invites new employers who might be interested in hiring someone with a disability. Some companies that are actively involved in the group include Four Day Ray, Conner Prairie, Memory Ventures, and StatWax. IKEA has even attended some meetings.

“We’re trying to bring more awareness about the capabilities of individuals with a disability and that they are eager to work,” Coble adds. “They’re good employees — they’re very loyal and they’re very trainable. We hope to also provide the resources to these employers to say, ‘You don’t need to take this on yourself.’ There are resources — people that can train these employees and help you to meet some of your employment needs.”

In addition to local businesses, members also include service providers throughout Hamilton county. The group is always looking for more businesses to collaborate with.

The networking group recognizes that the unemployment rate among disabled workers is high and that there are a lot of businesses that are in need of good workers. One business that’s a prime example of the benefit of hiring an employee with a disability is Conner Prairie.

“It could be people that currently hire individuals with a disability, it could be 52 / GEIST MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2019 / atGeist.com

HOW THEY ENRICH THE WORKFORCE

Conner Prairie has been employing workers with disabilities long before it became involved with the Fishers networking group. Since joining the group, it’s allowed them to expand their knowledge on how to best serve these employees and help them achieve their highest potential. Three years ago, Conner Prairie hired an individual with high-functioning autism to join its team. He started out doing data entry, scanning and some shredding. Shelby Slowik, human resources director at Conner Prairie, says that he’s able to do his job five times faster than the person who was doing that job prior. “He was and is phenomenal,” Slowik says. “His skill set, he is truly focused. He doesn’t like to have a lot of people interaction but he went through boxes of data — scanning it and shredding it, documenting and putting it in Excel. It was definitely a skill set that we could capitalize on and, at the same time, what was really nice was we were able to help him with becoming more comfortable with eye contact and verbal skills and communicating via email.” Slowik describes how he’s now evolved to other projects, such as the exhibits. “We discovered he has an artistic skill as well,” Slowik says. Since then, its staff of workers with disabilities has steadily grown. Coming to the decision to hire from this population was an easy decision for Conner Prairie. In fact, it’s part of its mission statement.

“Conner Prairie has a passion to welcome a variety of different voices,” Slowik says. “It’s part of our mission. We considered that we really identified a need that we weren’t representing our community as we could be.” Taking it a step further, Conner Prairie has reevaluated how it’s serving its disabled visitors, such as its campus accessibility. “Two of our newly renovated buildings are now accessible to wheelchairs and have the appropriate markings and pavement areas for those who are blind or are visually impaired,” Slowik says. “We do have an accessible playground that will be built, too.” As for its future, Conner Prairie wants to cut out the word “disability” when it’s referring to its workers. “We would like to stop saying disability and say we’re looking for people who are looking for employees and volunteers that have an ability they’d like to share with Conner Prairie,” Slowik says. LOOKING AHEAD

The Fishers Disability Inclusion in the Workforce Business Networking Group meets every other month. It’s now in its third year as a group and averages about 15 people at each meeting. However, it has had as many as 25 people attend. Pogue says the group has connected with and helped about 8 to 10 people find employment. In the future, the group would like to get more students as well as

adults involved. Recently, it has had many more guest employers at its meetings who are wanting to hear more about it. Pogue says that before, it seemed like the crowd was people who were already involved in the mission itself. Now, it has new employers coming to hear more. “This is important because we do have a lot of people in our community with special needs that are in the school system who are going to be able to work in the future in some capacity,” Coble says. “I, for myself, want my daughter to be able to do some meaningful work and be a contributor to our community. I think this group is a good start to those efforts.” For more information about the group and how to get involved, please email Chrissy Pogue at cpogue@hse.k12.in.us.

ast year, concerned residents along Geist began their campaign to form the Geist Conservancy District. The hope for the group is to sustain the long-term health of the 75-year old reservoir. Today, the group has continued to gain support and has officially formed its steering committee under the umbrella of the Geist Lake Coalition. The committee is an all-star cast of about 15 Geist residents and the group continues to grow. Their goal, according to the Steering Committee Chair Cory Peter, is to continue informing residents about the need for the Geist Conservancy District.

“Every one of us resides in the district,” Peter says. “All of us are working together — some work on the website, some are working on educational pieces to push out to residents. We are really trying to reach everyone that we can. There is misinformation everywhere about who is responsible for the reservoir. The largest piece is trying to convey our message that nobody is really responsible for fixing the reservoir or maintaining it right now, and if we don’t change that then we are definitely on the wrong side of the curve.”

To form the conservancy district, at least 15% of residents living within that district must sign a petition showing their support. The proposed Geist Conservancy District is made up of roughly 4,000 homes. To date, the group has already received the signatures of about 30% of Geist residents in favor of the petition — over 1,200 homes total. Still, the aim is to inform and gain the support of as many Geist residents as possible prior to filing. 56 / GEIST MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2019 / atGeist.com

“Since we have more than double the required signatures at this point, we’re now just wanting to get those that maybe haven’t had a chance to sign yet an opportunity to be part of history,” said Tom Britt, another Steering Committee member. “We are planning some petition drives at local businesses to give people an opportunity to come out and ask their questions and hopefully sign the petition.” In addition to the Steering Committee, over 100 residents have volunteered to be block

captains who have been going door to door urging their neighbors to show their support by signing the petition. “We started collecting signatures about a year ago,” Peter says. “It is not a fast process. It takes volunteers walking door to door and telling people about this. People have questions, so there are times we may spend 30 minutes or more talking with residents about the reservoir and the conservancy district. Our block captains live in each neighborhood of the proposed district. These are people that live here and feel passionate enough to want to go out and talk to their neighbors. They have put a lot of time into this.” Peter says there is no hard date for when the group will file the official request to form the conservancy district, but there is no doubt that it will happen by the end of 2019. Even still, he says, there is plenty of time for residents who haven’t signed the petition to show their support. Those looking for more information on the Geist Conservancy District can visit GeistConservancy.com. Residents who seek to become a block captain, donate or sign the petition can click the “How to Help” tab at the top of the webpage. “Other efforts to maintain the reservoir have been merely cosmetic because there is not a funding mechanism in place to turn back the clock on our aging reservoir,” Peter says. “The Geist Conservancy District is the end solution to this problem. We are working pretty hard to make sure we do things right and have support. So far, we’ve been overwhelmed with support and the number of signatures. As those continue to come in, we also get requests asking how to help, which is great. We encourage everyone, if you have questions to feel free to reach out to us.”

LOCAL FORTVILLE SHOP OFFERS UNIQUE ANTIQUES & ECLECTIC ITEMS Writer / Matt Keating Photographer / Belinda Russell

Keri Whitaker, owner of Rustology, 36 A South Main Street, Fortville, says she loves the excitement of “the hunt,” when she is looking for unique antiques for her shop. “I have spent many Wednesdays at Christie’s of Indiana in Southport, and the Shipshewana Auction & Flea Market in Shipshewana, Indiana,” Whitaker says. “A lot of treasures can be found at the smaller auctions and estate sales too.” Whitaker claims that everything with Rustology started with her shopping addiction.

“To prevent from ever becoming a hoarder, I chose to shop for everyone else and sell (the items),” she says. “So, I rented my first booth at the Carmel Antique Mall. That blossomed into an additional booth at the Westfield and Southport Malls. After moving to Summerville, South Carolina, I had booths at Summerville Antique Gallery, Main Street Antiques, and Antiques and Artisans Village.” Moving to South Carolina also gave Whitaker an opportunity to open her first shop: Carolina Cottage. “It was a chance to learn and meet so many other shop owners with the same passion,” Whitaker says. “Then came Rustology in atGeist.com / OCTOBER 2019 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 59

Shipshewana (Indiana). After a short time there, I came back to the north side of Indianapolis. After some searching, I opened Rustology in Fortville on August 1, 2018.” Whitaker says it was the right choice. “Fortville has the small-town feel that I am really attracted to,” Whitaker says. “Fortville has a great selection of restaurants, which is a great complement to retail shops, too. Before opening, I talked with several of the current shop owners to get a feel for their experiences. Fortville has a great opportunity to grow and still maintain a small-town feel in the downtown area. It is also very accessible to residents of Fishers, McCordsville, Pendleton and Geist.”

Rustology carries a wide variety of eclectic items, new and old. “In selecting them, it has to be something I personally like,” Whitaker says. “I enjoy finding items and then staging them in the shop. My weakest component is selling. So in order to sell, I must like it. I want my customers to go home happy with their purchases.” Whitaker believes the word “antique” sometimes conjures up visions of grandma or great-grandma’s house. “That does not need to be the case,” she says. “Decorating with new items, and incorporating your special antique pieces, will bring out the personality of the people that live there. Use antiques as focal points. I do think that more people are currently using a lot of vintage pieces. Growing up in the vintage era, I’m really excited for that trend.”

Owner Keri Whitaker

Whitaker adds that Rustology is unique due to the one-of-a-kind pieces, along with new items. “I hope to help customers add their personality to their homes,” Whitaker says. “Rustology also has gifts such as candles and soaps that many people buy for others and come back to buy for themselves. I like to think of Rustology as a vintage, eclectic gift shop.” She says that antique lovers will also not be disappointed. “Antiques by definition must be 100plus years old,” Whitaker says. “Antique furniture is built better. Heavy, strong and meant to last. Many antiques have been cared for and should probably be kept in its original state. But, when you come across items that are ready for the trash, it’s time to think repurpose, paint or whatever it takes to make them beautiful again.” Overall, Whitaker loves Fortville. “Fortville is Fortville because of the people,” she says. “Many of the residents 60 / GEIST MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2019 / atGeist.com

put in hours and hours of volunteer time because they love it here. The retail owners work hard to bring you ‘Girls Night Out’ and other promotional activities and events. ‘Fortville Action’ has a very enjoyable Summer Concert Series, Winterfest and more. The town is small enough to walk with your spouse, friends and kiddos. I encourage you to explore what Fortville has to offer.” Whitaker encourages people to stop by Rustology when they visit Fortville, too. “It’s the blue building by the railroad tracks across from Taxman Brewing,” Whitaker says. “Also, I’d appreciate it if people followed my shop on Facebook at Rustology in Fortville to keep up with sales and town events.” Rustology is located at 36 A South Main Street in Fortville. You can give them a call at 843-830-5755 for more information.
