Geist Coffee Owner Jeremy Balch, Schoolhouse 7 Cafe Owner Curt Tappendorf and Pearl Street Pizzeria & Pub Owner Courtney Andrus

Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Belinda Russell

The Geist and East Fishers Business Council was created in response to the growing number of businesses whose geographic locations are beyond the west and central downtown Fishers area. As an offshoot of the Nickel Plate District Business Council, it shares the same goal of keeping communication lines open with the city. After a successful first meeting in February, the organization is eager to continue discussions of topics that impact area businesses. Courtney Andrus, owner of Fishers-based

Pure Eatery and a four-year participant in the Nickel Plate District Business Council, was instrumental in creating the new organization. After opening Pearl Street Pizzeria & Pub in the Geist/East Fishers area, she approached Stephanie Perry, assistant director of public relations for the City of Fishers. After discussions, the second business group was created.

Perry stresses the importance of having two different councils based on geographic locations.

“The business council’s goal is to provide a space for business owners to meet with the City of Fishers officials, and discuss upcoming events, business ideas, initiatives, construction, and any topics that may impact local businesses in their local area,” Andrus says.

The first meeting was held at Schoolhouse 7 Cafe on Cyntheanne Road. Although it followed an agenda supplied by Perry, the meeting was fairly informal. Introductions were made, and during the roundtable format, topics discussed included current infrastructure projects and upcoming

“Meetings can be tailored to speak to each group on specific projects and issues facing them, such as construction or future initiatives like the Geist Waterfront Park or Geist Greenway,” she says.

city-wide events. Participants were informed about new businesses opening in the area, and there was a question-and-answer period. The meeting concluded with an opportunity for networking. “Most area mom-and pop businesses could benefit from this group,” says Pam Chemelewski, general manager of Goldfish Swim School. “It’s always a good idea to have a group to bounce ideas from, as well as to learn from. Larger, franchisetype businesses could also benefit. For me personally, I appreciate the chance to connect with area business leaders in my same position. It’s good to share ideas and concerns, as well as problemsolving information.” The council gives both veteran business owners and new owners the opportunity to share information. Such owners have the opportunity to discuss what works well in the area, and how the area is changing. For those working with a small budget, it can be a resource for information on best marketing practices. “The goal is to meet quarterly, and we hope to have our next meeting in the late spring or early summer,” Perry says. “We want to build on the success of the first meeting, and reach out to any owners or employees of businesses located in the Geist and east Fishers area. An open invitation is extended to any business that wants to participate.”

believed in their mission and offered to volunteer time to edit segments.

thing with my badass friend?” says Young, president of Baise Communications.

They launched the podcast in January of 2020 and began sharing stories of resilience, strength, bravery and transformation. One story chronicled a domestic violence survivor whose estranged husband came to her house “I didn’t care if anybody read it,” Young and asked, “Are you ready to die today?” says. “It was more for me because I get He proceeded to brutally murder their so inspired, motivated and moved by toddler, then came after her. She escaped women’s stories.” and has since become an advocate against gun violence. empowering women. If we can change one life or impact one person by a story we’ve told, that’s the purpose.” The initial idea for the concept came after Young wrote her first blog highlighting a friend’s accomplishment of running three half-marathons in three days, in three national parks. Her friend confided that being an accomplished runner is not what she felt made her a badass - that came from the fact that she had overcome sexual abuse as a child. “If you want to share that story, I think that makes me more of a badass,” the friend said. Young and Stoesz Kersh believe that every woman has a story, and they are happy to provide a platform in which females can share those stories. They keep the podcasts between 30 and 35 minutes in length so that commuters can listen on their drive to or from work. The podcasts are aired every two weeks on Monday mornings.

In one of the podcasts, a woman chronicles leaving her job and volunteering her way around the world for an entire year. In another, a mother talks about her son, who had been a victim of gun violence. Shot in the head at the age of 16, his skull was shattered, taking away his ability to walk or talk again. Young maintains that the greatest thing about the interviews is the way listeners connect with the females in purposeful, relatable, meaningful ways. Young and Stoesz Kersh’s hope is that they are not only empowering the women they are interviewing, but also empowering those experiencing the podcasts. October is National Women’s Small Business Month, and these friends are proud to celebrate such an accomplishment. “Women play so many different roles,” Young says. “We are entrepreneurs, coaches, moms, taxi drivers and advocates. Each role is equally important, but to be a womanowned business is a challenge that should be celebrated and recognized.” Born in Savannah, Georgia, Stoesz Kersh was raised by her grandparents in Linton, Indiana, after her military father died in a helicopter crash one month before she was born. Young, a mother of two, is glad her podcast serves to inspire her daughter. “She’s even opened my eyes to some girls and women we should feature,” Young says. The pair feel the podcast may be especially healing right now, when people might be suffering after months of social isolation. “People are feeling alone,” Stoesz Kersh says. “Hearing these stories enables women to identify with others on some level.” Young adds that feel-good stories are perhaps what many people might need at the moment. “We want to find the positive beauty in the world,” she says. rand Champion Janel Keesling knows what it’s like to walk into a car dealership as a woman and feel pressured and overwhelmed. “We’d like to think the world treats women equally, but there are presumed biases,” says Keesling, who, along with her husband Cole, owns CarSnoop, an innovative way to buy, lease or trade-in a vehicle from your phone, or computer. The beauty of CarSnoop is that dealerships don’t have any idea of the customer’s gender or race—only the city in which they reside. Hence, the buying experience is simplified. “In light of the pandemic, we’ve all changed the way we buy everything,” says Keesling, noting that consumers would rather browse for cars while relaxing on their back porch than wander countless dealerships. “We do all the legwork and even have a full concierge service to find the car you desire,” says Keesling. “Want a blue 2020 Honda Accord with XYZ features? We’ll find the best offers from dealerships.” CarSnoop enables the buyer to do all the paperwork from home and then they deliver the car directly to your home. “You literally don’t have to go anywhere,” says Keesling. “It’s a stress-free experience all the way around.”

TIPS FOR HOSTING THE PERFECT

PARTY

Writer / Abigail Hake

pooky days are on their way, and many of us are in need of any reason to decorate or party lately. While the times continue to be a little hairy, there’s still room to have fun, especially during the Halloween season. Here are a few tips on how to throw a spook-tacular Halloween party for you and your friends.

have to be fancy, but it can be. The biggest factors to consider are restrooms and overall space. This year especially, make sure that whatever venue you choose has enough room for your guests to spread out a little. If the party won’t be at your own home, check to make sure the venue owners allow decorations, because that’s up next…

INVITATIONS

DECORATIONS

This might be the year to indulge in creative invites. With fewer social opportunities to see friends and family in person, an actual mailed invite to your guests would be appreciated. Depending on the guest list, create your own or order pre-made invitations and add your own little touch. Throw in something spooky like a slimy crawler or tiny spiders so that when your guests open it, they’ll really be wowed!

LOCATION

Will the gathering be outside or inside? At your house or another location? It doesn’t

First, you might want to decide whether your party will be full-on scary, or just a little spooky yet family friendly. Regardless, a party is always more fun when the location is decorated so don’t skimp. You can keep it simple with spiderwebs, pumpkins and bats, or go a little crazier by adding mischievous skeletons to every room. Maybe include a skeleton that guests can pose with for a photo. Add some haunted decorations outside to welcome your guests in. Don’t be afraid to do something unconventional. If there is ever a time to try something crazy, it’s during Halloween. OCTOBER 2020

COSTUMES

Encourage your guests to dress up, and make sure this is included on the invite so there’s no confusion. Maybe even note that there will be a costume contest, with a few different categories and a prize. You can even make your own trophy to give out at the end of the night. Once people know there is a prize involved, they’ll really up their costume game.

GAMES AND ACTIVITIES

Make sure there’s something available to entertain your guests as well. If you are partying outside, indulge in yard games like spooky cornhole with ghosts added to the boards. Pumpkin ring toss is a great game that’s super easy too. Use glow necklaces or bracelets as rings to play after dark. Consider a craft station where kids can make their own trick-or-treat bags to take home.

FOOD

This is where it can get really fun. Try a hand

ice cube floating in your punch bowl, witches’ fingers or band-aid biscuits, to name just a few. Research websites like Pinterest, and you’ll find loads of horrific and blood-curdling treat ideas.

MUSIC

This is key for any party. Curate your own playlist to ensure continued spooky sounds for the entire night. Make sure you include classics like “Monster Mash” and “Thriller” on there. Once you’ve completed it, make sure to put it on repeat so you don’t run out of mood music throughout the evening. Your guests will love the theme music and it will keep everyone feeling good. With these tips, you should be well on your way to throwing a memorable party that will be the talk of October. Remember, this is a time to be silly and creative, so don’t hold back. As always, stay safe and have fun!

A FRESH START BLUEPEPPERMINT BOUTIQUE FINDS THE PERFECT FIT AT NEW FISHERS DISTRICT LOCATION Writer / Julie Yates . Photographer / Amy Payne

Owner Jessica Landez

“I WANT TO MAKE SURE PEOPLE FEEL COMFORTABLE WHEN THEY COME IN TO BLUEPEPPERMINT.”

The new setting for BluePeppermint Boutique is what Owner Jessica Landez always envisioned for her business. Now located at The Yard at Fishers District, the on-trend women’s clothing shop is nestled amidst a variety of shops and eateries. Landez’s relocation comes after several years of experience offering the community both a brick-and-mortar store and online shopping. “As a kid, I loved to shop with my mom,” Landez says. “It was a special time for us. I used to dream about getting locked inside a mall and having to live there. I was also fascinated with cash registers. I loved the OCTOBER 2020

whole experience, from finding something to buy that I really liked, to the connection with people in general.” After a series of jobs unrelated to retail, Landez eventually took the necessary steps to educate herself on running a retail business. “I taught for a year, got my real estate license, married and had a family,” Landez says. “I would think, ‘What would I do if I knew I couldn’t fail?’ The answer was always, ‘Own a boutique.’ But I had no experience in retail and no idea where to begin. Then I got a start by renting a bit of square footage in another Fishers boutique, MJ Layne.”

Her time renting space inside an established store gave her the confidence to lease a house near Commercial Drive and 116th Street. After being there for five years, she was ready for the move to Fishers District. “We appeal to a wide age range,” Landez says. “An 18-year-old daughter shopping with her 40-year-old mom, or a 25-year-old daughter shopping with her 60-year-old mother, will all find something they love. I do the buying and I’m always looking for the best quality at the most affordable price. When we first started out in the little green house, I sensed that people didn’t feel confident they should be in there. I want to make sure people feel comfortable when they come in to BluePeppermint.” BluePeppermint’s online store is always open, and offers free shipping and free returns. New merchandise arrives daily, and

sales and giveaways change often. Items and special promotions can be seen on the boutique’s social media platforms, which are constantly updated. “Our new location is such a fun place,” Landez says. “The focal point of the store is a mural painted by local artist Laura Dro. The whole development is the perfect location to go with a girlfriend. There are so many things to do right there such as get breakfast, work out, get a massage or go to the hair salon. We were on board ever since we heard about The Yard at Fishers District. It’s perfect for our customers, and what I always hoped for.” BluePeppermint Boutique is located at 9705 Fishers District Drive in Fishers. THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN RIDES AGAIN AT CONNER PRAIRIE FALL FESTIVAL It takes a lot more than a pandemic to keep the Headless Horseman down. He rides again this year at Conner Prairie in Fishers, just in time to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the publication of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving. This Halloween season, however, the Headless Horseman will have to follow the social distancing guidelines in place at Conner Prairie’s annual fall festival. “Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Conner Prairie has made several changes to Headless Horseman operations in order to ensure public safety while still delivering a fun family event,” says Christine DeJoy, director of public affairs at Conner Prairie. “These changes have been made in accordance with CDC guidelines, and have been approved by the Fishers Department of Health.” The Conner Prairie staff has multiple activities planned. “Guests will receive a complimentary bag of a ball and a ring necessary to play games,” DeJoy says. “Bounce houses, the corn sandbox, karaoke, and other games and activities not conducive to social distancing have been replaced with more suitable activities.” The Apple Store at Conner Prairie is currently closed, but apple cider slushies will be available in select food tents. “Access to the corn maze and haunted corn maze will be limited to groups of 10 every three minutes, to ensure adequate spacing,” DeJoy says. “The crowds will only be a maximum of 2,000 people per night.” Guests, staff members, volunteers and vendors are required to wear masks except when consuming food or drinks. All shows at the festival will be performed on open-air stages or in open-sided pavilions. OCTOBER 2020

“Guests do not have to submit to a temperature check, but are asked to stay home if they are sick or part of a vulnerable population,” DeJoy says. “Staff, volunteers and vendors are required to pass a daily temperature check and health questionnaire.” Guests are required to purchase tickets for specific event dates. Tickets are only available online in advance of desired event dates. “There’s always a lot of excitement for our Headless Horseman festival,” DeJoy says. “This year we had to make revisions to festival staples, but we think the outcome will leave our guests happily satisfied with some of our changes.” DeJoy says this year marks the 37th Headless Horseman fall festival. Festival activities will run throughout the month of October. Many families enjoy the haunted hayride, during which they are chased down by the Headless Horseman. Attendees can also check out a Legend of Sleepy Hollow theatrical show, a monster museum and much more. The midway will feature games including Ghost Pitch, Cauldron Toss, Pirate Ring Toss, Plinko, Monster Long Jump and Soccer Putt-Putt. Conner Prairie is located at 13400 Allisonville Road in Fishers. Fore more info, call 317-776-6000. For festival event dates, ticket info, an activities list and more, visit connerprairie.org.

Founder Rebecca Colone

Writer / Julie Yates . Photography Provided by Amy Payne & Michele’s Mission of Love OCTOBER 2020

ichele’s Mission of Love began as a way for Founder Rebecca Colone to honor the memory of her mother while aiding her own healing journey. The organization, which became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in March of 2020, gained national attention after being featured on “The Kelly Clarkson Show.” One of its programs, which provides mats made out of recycled plastic bags for the homeless, caught the attention of the show’s producer. “Kelly’s producer contacted me last February,” Colone says. “They wanted me to be a guest on the show and talk about the mat mission. I was on a flight to L.A. that Friday.” The organization has 50 active volunteers, and more than 1,700 members comprise its Facebook group. While activities have slowed down due to the coronavirus pandemic, the organization continues to help those in need. It occupies a special niche in comforting cancer patients. “My mom’s name was Michele and she passed away in 2014,” Colone says. “She taught me that relationships, as well as providing acts of kindness, are more important than anything. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016. I had a double mastectomy and it took me five months to heal. I thought about what my mom had taught me, and I started making bags to give to cancer patients. It made me feel better.” After receiving a heart-shaped pillow during her mastectomy recovery, Colone began sewing and donating them. After that, when a woman from her church told her about making mats out of plastic bags, she began producing mats and arranged distribution through two organizations - So Others Can Survive, and God’s Open Arms Ministry. “Even though I had never crocheted before, I figured out how,” Colone says. “First the bags have to be cut into strips and made into plarn, or plastic yarn. It takes about eight hours and 500 to 700 bags to make one mat. I posted on Facebook asking for used bags and it really blew up. We have three bag collection sites - Fishers, Noblesville and Avon. We are currently looking for a business that would donate some unused office space or a storage unit.” Each month the organization focuses on a special project, and often projects become an OCTOBER 2020

ongoing part of the charity. One such project is luggage donation, as a considerable number of children that enter foster care transport their possessions in garbage bags. There are several ways to assist Michele’s Mission of Love. The group’s Facebook page has a link for purchasing wish-list items. Since the organization is registered as a nonprofit, monetary gifts are tax deductible. “What’s amazing is that it helps those who help,” Colone says of her organization. “One volunteer has made over 50 mats since February. She was dealing with depression. This has given her a purpose. We hope to make someone smile. We want them to know we are thinking of them and they are never alone.” Visit facebook.com/groups/MMof L for more information. Monetary gifts can be sent to Michele’s Mission of Love, c/o Rebecca Colone, P.O. Box 211, McCordsville, IN, 46055.

On a Saturday afternoon in 1965, three men and their families decided to play a game of badminton. Unable to find a shuttlecock, they improvised. They lowered the net, poked holes in a plastic ball and crafted paddles out of spare plywood. Pickleball was born.

“As soon as I played it for the first time I was hooked,” he says. “I grew up playing After 55 years, this combination of ping-pong. Me and my brother are super badminton, table tennis and traditional competitive. It reminded me of shrinking tennis is one of the fastest-growing sports in yourself down to a ping-pong table. Marcus Woodhouse, president and cofounder of Indy Pickleball Club (IPC) says he fell in love with the game about five years ago.

It was at these tournaments where Woodhouse says he was inspired to create IPC. “I travel for pickleball tournaments all over,” OCTOBER 2020

he says. “All the tournaments are held by the clubs in all the bigger cities. I noticed the need in our city to get one voice in one place. It seems like more of the small towns are getting pickleball courts and the bigger cities haven’t caught up to the smaller cities. I wanted to get tournaments here. I wanted to do something for the city - to do something for kids and grow the sport in the Indianapolis area.” IPC officially launched in August of 2019, and the club’s stated mission is “to grow the sport of pickleball in central Indiana

by developing and promoting recreation, league and tournament opportunities for players of all ages and ability.” In its brief existence, IPC membership has grown to more than 100 pickleball players. Woodhouse says he expects that number to continue to grow. “Our ultimate goal, obviously, would be to have well over 1,000-plus members,” he says. The number of people who play pickleball increased 650% between 2013 and 2019 according to the USA Pickleball Association. 2020 has seen the postponement or cancellation of pickleball tournaments all over the country, but Woodhouse says he believes the coronavirus pandemic is bringing more people to the sport. “I think COVID has really helped bring families to the game,” he says. “Once they

also procures courts for beginner classes where newcomers can learn the game. The proceeds from these events are put back into the club to fund its long-term goals.

Woodhouse attributes pickleball’s increasing popularity to the game’s accessibility. The club is working towards becoming a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. “Everyone can play it,” he says. “You can be 90 years old or eight years old and play. In addition to the IPCC, Woodhouse says he wants IPC to help build pickleball courts throughout central Indiana. “We’re just trying to find places for that to be organized, and to just keep growing the sport so that we can introduce more and more people to it,” he says. “One of my ultimate goals is to be able to have pickleball in every school. Having facilities where schools can bring their kids would be one of my absolute dreams. Hopefully one day we’ll see it as a competitive sport in high schools.” IPC’s next event is the “IPC BEST. SPORT. EVER.” tournament, scheduled to take place October 2 through October 4. There will be a youth scramble on Friday, men’s and women’s doubles on Saturday, and mixed doubles on Sunday. Woodhouse says IPC is currently working to secure indoor locations for three pickleball tournaments this winter. rowing up, Janette Jackson dreamed of becoming a teacher. However, after she was given the opportunity to intern with the Indiana Pacers, she changed her major from elementary education to general studies. After college, she pursued a number of careers including apartment management, social services, higher education and community relations. “Every job I’ve ever held, I felt like I always needed to provide a service to individuals,” says Jackson, who is still getting a chance to flex those muscles in her current dual role of human resource director and director of minority and women business development for the City of Lawrence. Jackson started working for the City of Lawrence in late 2019. The director of minority and women business development role, however, is new as of August 2020. Jackson is grateful that Mayor Steve Collier saw the need to provide opportunities for minority, women, veteran and disability business enterprises.

In 2017, the Lawrence Common Council established an ordinance to promote utilization of the aforementioned types of enterprises for public works projects and services for the City of Lawrence. In March of 2019, Collier signed an executive order to create the Office of Minority and Women Business Development. Because this is a new role, Jackson plans to meet with the Redevelopment Commission to notify businesses about upcoming projects, and make it a requirement in their bidding process to list and identify specific enterprise types. “We’ll know, when they are putting in a bid, whether they are part of those enterprises, which will give them the opportunity to make sure we’re meeting that requirement of the different businesses,” says Jackson, who also plans to meet with various community groups throughout the city to build partnerships that can help businesses learn how to apply.

“We want to make sure the administrative team understands what each of those business enterprises look like, and how we can utilize them with the utilization and promotion of projects, services and employment with the city, because a lot of people don’t know,” says Jackson, reiterating that it’s about creating opportunities. “Lawrence is a very diverse community. We want our employees to look like the city, and the mayor has made a statement to be sure we are moving in that direction.” Jackson, a 1998 Lawrence Central High School grad, has been astounded by the booming development that has occurred throughout the last 20-plus years in the area.

“I’m grateful Mayor Collier saw a vision in me to help grow, promote and utilize these types of business entities,” Jackson says.

“I remember when Pendleton Pike was nothing,” she says. “To witness the growth and development that has happened and continues to happen is exciting.” She points to school construction as well as other projects under development as examples. “I’m happy to see that we are providing opportunities for different businesses and organizations,” says Jackson, mother to a beautiful 9-year-old daughter. When the coronavirus pandemic hit earlier this year, Jackson was grateful that she could bring her daughter to work with her as she engaged in e-learning. “She loved meeting the mayor,” Jackson says. “I appreciate the city being open and atGeist.com / OCTOBER 2020 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 41

understanding to these changes that were so unexpected.” In her free time, Jackson likes to engage with her church community, volunteering with the youth and children’s ministry. She also volunteers with Harvest Girls International, a nonprofit designed to empower young ladies aged 9 to 17. The

To unwind, Jackson enjoys sitting in silence and meditating. She also loves live music, though sadly that’s currently off the table in many locations. She admits, however, that the pandemic has had its upsides, like forcing her to remove some items from her calendar. “When we were shut down, I realized that maybe I need to slow down and learn to appreciate the moment,” says Jackson, who spent more time cooking and playing games. “[The quarantine] made us go back to traditional days when we sat at the table together eating and playing games. It was

good for us.” Jackson certainly gained a newfound perspective on life. “Tomorrow is not promised, so I cherish each moment I have with my family and friends,” says Jackson, who also used the time to continue to grow in her religious faith. Jackson feels that being a public servant aligns nicely with her childhood dream of teaching. “I’ve come to realize that you don’t have to be in the classroom to be a teacher,” she says. “Being able to provide a need to individuals that will help them develop and grow has been my focus in life.”

Brickhouse Coffee Co. is a business built on fostering relationships through coffee. “I’m a very relational guy, so I’m very intentional when I’m behind the bar with getting to know my customers,” says Brickhouse Founder Jared Stayton. “If you’re coming in, we want you to feel at home. We want our house to be your house.”

Brickhouse originally started out as a wholesale roasting business in 2013, and has since developed a retail arm, with Larry Hansen coming on as a business partner with Stayton in December of 2016. After opening a shop location in Greenwood in August of 2017, the Brickhouse team has launched a new coffee shop in the Geist Crossing Shoppes strip on Fall Creek Road, which opened in late July. For Stayton and his wife Lora, opening up a 44 / GEIST MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2020 / atGeist.com

coffee shop is a dream that dates back to when they graduated from Indiana University. “On the other side of our time at IU, once we got married, for whatever reason we thought it’d be cool to open up a coffee shop down on Bloomington’s campus,” Stayton says. “Just understanding where a lot of youth are these days, we thought, ‘Wow, what a great way just to love on a community and connect with a community in a very organic way.’ That was many, many

Strong in their Christian faith, the couple has always seen coffee as a great way to connect with individuals in a community. “We’re Christians, and we’re very relational in our faith,” Stayton says. “I don’t stand out on a sidewalk and evangelize with a megaphone, but I

love building relationships with people, loving on them and meeting them where they’re at. If the opportunity presents itself, we’re never ashamed to share our faith.” Stayton eventually attended a barista school under the tutelage of Guy Pfanz in Muncie, where he truly caught the coffee bug. “That really just turned it from an idea of an entrepreneur owning a coffee shop to, ‘Man, I really love this coffee industry. I love everything about it, from the farming to the preparation of a drink to the actual art and craft of it all,’” Stayton says. “I really developed a passion for the coffee industry in its entirety at that point.” After working in Spain as missionaries for one and a half years, Stayton and his wife returned to Indianapolis where Stayton was met with a proposal to start his own coffee endeavor, leading to the start of Brickhouse Coffee Co. “Our church was talking about doing something with coffee with their bible college, and I ended up going to that bible college,” Stayton says. “They wanted me to share the vision I had for coffee. I did, they loved it, and they gave me the opportunity.” Originally founded in an old brick house in the center of Horizon Christian Fellowship’s 100-acre campus on Indian Lake Road, Brickhouse Coffee Co. has grown organically. As Stayton explains, his community-minded approach extends throughout the Brickhouse brand, including building relationships with coffee farmers.

“Being a relational guy, it’s important to me to have a relationship not only with my importer but with the farmers we work with,” he says. As Stayton points out, Brickhouse Coffee Co.’s El Corazón roast is a great example of the company’s relational approach. “In 2018 I had an opportunity to travel to Lempira, Honduras, with one of my importers, and we met a cooperative of independent farmers there called Flor del Cafe that decided to come together,” Stayton says. “It was an amazing experience for me to go there, meet the farmers, hear their story and share our story.” Now with a new coffee shop, located not far from the brick house where everything started, Stayton and Hansen are excited to get to know other small businesses in the community in the hopes of lifting everyone up.

“We’ve got to lock arms together if we’re going to survive this together,” Stayton says of small businesses as they fight through the coronavirus pandemic. “It’s not every man for himself. It’s how do we collaborate with one another and point business back to each other so we can weather the storm together.” Stayton and Hansen look forward to building a new relationship with every new customer that comes into their shop through coffee. “I want to make sure that we have a quality product,” Stayton says. “Beyond that, it’s how do we take care of our customers? We want to adopt them as family.” Visit Brickhouse Coffee Co. at 9771 Fall Creek Road in Indianapolis, located at Geist Crossing Shoppes.
