PIECE OF CAKE BOOZE-E BUNDTS BAKERY BUSINESS IS OPERATED BY LOCAL MOTHER-DAUGHTER DUO Writer / Renee Larr Photography Provided

Designing a business around a hobby is the epitome of doing what you love. Cathi Nazarowff took her love of baking and cocktails to create Booze-e Bundts in 2019. Her daughter Bri Reinhold joined her in the business in 2020. “It all started with rum cakes,” Reinhold says. “My mom has been a baker my whole life. Everyone always signed my mom up for dessert duty because she is known for making great desserts. People always requested her rum cake, but then she thought she’d like to start experimenting with different flavors and liqueurs.” All that experimenting led to the creation of 18 flavors of booze-infused bundt cakes. The cakes go through a two-step process of booze infusion while being baked.

“We use alcohol in the batter,” Reinhold says. “After the cakes are baked, they then go through a soaking process where they are soaked in the flavored alcohol. This makes the cakes very moist, which customers seem to love.” Flavors include butter pecan, cherry chip, coffee cake, fireball pineapple upside down, and many more. The alcohol also acts as a preservative, allowing the cakes to last longer. “They can stay out on the counter for about a week,” Reinhold says. “You can put them in the fridge and they will last for a month or two. You put them in the freezer for three months.”

says. “We didn’t want to use the money to open a store when so many restaurants and businesses were struggling during COVID.” Instead, the mother and daughter bake the cakes out of a certified kitchen in Cicero and then ship them all over the U.S. “This allows us to focus more on our product,” Reinhold says. Reinhold knows an e-commerce bakery may be hard for people to grasp at first. “I know the idea of an online-only bakery is a learning curve for some people,” Reinhold says. “Once customers have learned to trust the process, they’ve been great with it.”

The pair decided against a brick-and-mortar location, instead focusing on e-commerce.

The cakes are topped with different confections rather than sugary frosting.

“We decided against having a storefront to help keep our costs down,” Reinhold

“We top a lot of cakes with actual toppings instead of frosting,” Reinhold says. “Our

LOCAL RESIDENT STEPHANIE KELLEY TAKES A NONTRADITIONAL CAREER PATH Steph Kelley

Writer / Megan Arszman Photographer / Amy Payne

Steph Kelley has never been a traditionalist, given her career path and her overall way of thinking. In fact, one might say she tends to go against the grain. This is why she named her business AgainstTheGrain Woodworking, as it describes how she and her husband Shawn have chosen to live their lives. As a woman who owns her own business in a field that is typically male dominated, she’s doing it in her own way and thriving. “My husband and I like to do things a little different, so I wanted my business to showcase that,” she says. It all started with having to rebuild a deck at their Noblesville home. After gathering a few price estimates that seemed rather expensive, Steph told her husband it was a project they could do on their own. However, they had no tools. With the

help of her parents, who came in from Pennsylvania, the family rebuilt the deck in one weekend. That lit a spark for Steph. “One night I was on Pinterest and saw farm tables, and I thought they looked pretty interesting,” she says. Shawn purchased what Steph calls the best gift ever - a miter saw. A little while later, he returned home to find a farm table built in their garage. With the help of YouTube videos, internet research, and trial and error, Steph taught herself woodworking. Now, that single miter saw is joined with saws of every type imaginable filling up their garage, which has been transformed into Steph’s woodshop. In 2019 Steph discovered live-edge woodworking, where the natural edge of the wood is incorporated into the design of a piece of furniture or other wooden item. An offshoot of live-edge woodworking is the process of adding epoxy resin to the natural holes and cracks 10 / GEIST MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2021 / TownePost.com

WELL PLANNED PARALLEL DESIGN GROUP GIVES CLIENTS CUSTOM SERVICE Writer / Renee Larr Photography Provided

Adrienne Evans, Director of Marketing + Client Experience

Alex Rice, Project Interior Designer

Many working women struggle to find a work-life balance. In 2016 Briana Dunkin founded Parallel Design Group (PDG) to achieve a symbiosis between her family and her career. “When Briana was pregnant with her first daughter, she felt she had to choose between having a family and having a career,” says Adrienne Evans, director of marketing and client experience. “For the time being at her last place of employment, she pumped the brakes and focused inward towards her family. After her second daughter was born, she had the opportunity to work with a previous client on a one-off project. That continued to lead to more projects and more clients. She built Parallel Design Group after working on those projects.” Dunkin’s focus was creating a family-centric business.

Briana Dunkin, Founder + Principal

“She built the business with the intent of putting family first,” Evans says. “In her previous role, she felt she had to choose between having a family or a business. She wanted to create this opportunity for herself, but for other women too. Currently we have a staff of 10, and the majority of our 14 / OCTOBER 2021

employees are female. I think what attracts them to PDG is serving with integrity and the culture that has been created.” The PDG staff creates beautiful interior designs for businesses and residential properties. “We were primarily doing commercial spaces up until COVID,” Evans says. “Then several of our previous commercial clients contacted us needing help with creating solutions for their home. They had the whole family including their kids working from home.” PDG’s local projects include Sangiovese Ristorante, Sangrita Grill + Cantina, Flexware Innovation, Hub & Spoke, INCOG BioPharma Services, Engel and Völkers, and more. “The Sangrita at Fishers District is a second location, and one of the owners, Tarek Mercho, knew the clientele would be different from the Broad Ripple location,” Evans says. “We wanted to put a spin on the first restaurant. We wanted to bring the authenticity of the Spanish and Mexican flavors and vibes, while also elevating it for a more elegant feel.” Sangiovese is the second location for Owner

EXPLORING THE UNEXPLAINED NEW SHOW TACKLES LOCAL STORIES OF THE PARANORMAL

18 / OCTOBER 2021

Writer / Renee Larr Photography Provided

Losing a loved one is an unfortunate part of life. Some people claim to feel their loved ones communicating with them even after they’ve died. A new, all-female show called “Paranormal X Road” aims to help bring peace to alleged paranormal experiences. Kitsie Duncan and KJ McGlinn co-host “Paranormal X Road.” Duncan is an author, writer, producer, director and paranormal researcher. McGlinn is a local radio personality who uses her voice to help the local community. Tiffany Rice, a spirit medium, rounds out the cast. “In the first episode, I had some things happening in my home,” McGlinn says. “I was pretty sure it was my grandmother coming through. I don’t want to give too much away, but it ended up being way more than just my grandmother communicating with me.” Being an all-female show was essential to both women. OCTOBER 2021 / 19

me, and that was important for this show.” The duo funded the show through a Kickstarter campaign, meeting their goal in just three days. “The beauty about Kickstarter is the person who gave $5 has the same effect as the person who donated $500,” McGlinn says. “It’s all or nothing, which is terrifying. If you don’t hit your goal, you get nothing.” Duncan’s vision for the show is to help as many people as she can and provide a sense of comfort. “I got into this because I was missing my dad,” Duncan says. “Bringing these people peace has been magical. I want to help people all over the world.” Duncan and McGlinn are hopeful for a second season, to bring even more paranormal stories. “Right now we’re just enjoying the show airing,” Duncan says. “We’re really hopeful we can create a second season with an even bigger budget so we can help even more people.” “First and foremost - girl power,” Duncan says. “I believe females, in general, are a little more empathetic. I feel like the female energy helps the spirits communicate. Paranormal shows are all over television. I feel like it’s time for an all-female team. We’ve gone into homes of people we don’t know and received messages that we don’t necessarily understand, but it makes complete sense to the homeowner. That’s been pretty cool. We understand how

meaningful it is to them.” McGlinn, an Indianapolis resident, felt compelled to put the normal in the paranormal, as she says. “When I moved to Indy, it was really a lastditch effort,” McGlinn says. “To be here 20plus years later in a community that I love, seeing them embrace this new show, is just amazing. I feel like the community trusts in 20 / OCTOBER 2021

While Season 1 is almost done filming, KJ & Kitsie continue to be available to assist homeowners experiencing the paranormal or just hoping to make a connection with a loved one who’s passed. A contact form is available through their website. The show airs locally on WNDY-TV 23 on Saturdays at midnight, and on YouTube. For more information, visit paranormalcrossroad.com.

That is why I chose Lake Meadows for my family.” Amy Harris Writer / Julie Yates Photography Provided

When the time came for Amy Harris to look for an assisted living facility for her deaf clients in the Fishers area, she had important specifications that needed to be met. As a child of deaf adults, she grew up within the deaf community. When her parents got older, she joined the health care world in order to understand the processes involved with admissions, rehabilitation, long-term care and assisted living. She realized that working with deaf seniors was her passion and became employed by Archibald Memorial Home, an organization whose mission is to assist deaf and hard of hearing seniors. “The things that are key for Archibald are

the flowers were coming from Ecuador and were two weeks old. They were full of chemicals and wrapped in gobs of plastic. That just didn’t feel good to me.”

ishers resident Mackenzie Baker-Robinson felt a calling to make a change in her career in 2020. Baker-Robinson was a teacher but wanted a more flexible job that allowed her to express her creativity.

Baker-Robinson’s parents own 80 acres of land just north of 106th Street and Allisonville Road.

“I quit teaching last fall and ended up working at a local florist shop,” Baker-Robinson says. “Working in the shop was really fun, and it got me thinking about the whole idea of starting a local flower farm.”

“We started playing around with the idea of opening a flower farm,” Baker-Robinson says. “Fishers doesn’t have one, which is crazy to me because Fishers has grown so much. I thought it would be awesome for our community to have. My parents said I could use a portion of their land to start Fishers Flower Farm. Back in January we started with thousands of seeds in a sunroom, which we use as a greenhouse. That’s where the process starts. Once they get big enough and the weather is warm enough, we can plant them out on the farm. It takes about 50 to 60 days to bloom flowers.”

While working at the florist, Baker-Robinson noticed the flowers were coming from Ecuador, and were often filled with chemicals to keep them alive longer. “I used to work at a shop called Global Gifts,” BakerRobinson says. “Fair trade is everything made sustainably and handmade, so you know exactly who is making it. There is no slave labor. Global Gifts is a nonprofit, and all the proceeds go directly to the artisans. I already had that mindset of being mindful about where the things you buy originate. I really loved the creative part of working as a florist and making the customers happy, but I was noticing

The flowers don’t have to be local to grow on the farm. “For example, if you take a basic flower like a zinnia, you could grow those for much longer if we had a climate OCTOBER 2021 / 33

that was lovely year-round like California,” Baker-Robinson says. “For us here in Indiana, we just grow them in the heat of summer.” Fishers Flower Farm participates in the Fishers Farmers Market each Saturday. “The farmers market has been really awesome,” Baker-Robinson says. “I was excited they chose us to participate in the first place because I didn’t know if they already had enough flower vendors. Obviously it’s our first year in business too, but it has become one of my favorite things. We work until midnight Friday, because we have to cut the flowers when it’s cool enough out. It’s kind of last-minute to make sure they’re as fresh as possible. Then we arrange them and then let them condition in the fridge overnight. Then they’re taken to the market on Saturday.” Baker-Robinson co-owns the farm with her 34 / OCTOBER 2021

mother, Kayti. “My mom and I are very close,” BakerRobinson says. “Before we started working together, we saw each other every day. Obviously now we do too. We’re often on the same wavelength. We’re both very creative, go-with-the-flow and spontaneous. She’s really good at arranging the flowers, and I’m really good at researching. She has a day job so this is a lot for her, but it’s been awesome to work together.” Fishers Flower Farm offers a monthly flower subscription in addition to bouquets for those who love fresh blooms. “You can subscribe for a month of your choosing, and each week of that month you get fresh flowers delivered to your doorstep,” Baker-Robinson says. “We cut them either the morning of, or the night before, so they’re super fresh. Then we arrange them and deliver them to your door. It’s all

It’s fun because you never know what you’re going to get.” Baker-Robinson looks at her first year as a learning year for the business, and has big plans for the future. “In the future I would love to get my own land separate from their home,” BakerRobinson says of her parents’ property. “Obviously more land means more flowers. I would love to be able to host events on the property. I would love to have professional photographers use the flower farm to take photos of their clients too.” Fishers Flower Farm offers floral arrangements, bouquet bar workshops, wreath workshops, wreath and flower delivery, and more. To aid in that inspiration, Walsman’s husband of three years, Drew, gifted her a top-of-the-line stand mixer. Walsman immediately went to work looking up recipes for homemade cakes.

“I had started watching ‘The Great British Baking Show’ and I was so inspired by everything I saw,” Walsman says. “I decided

“The first thing I made was a cake and it was horrible,” she says with a laugh. “It was ugly and it was dry. I didn’t know how to tell my husband that I was probably never going to 38 / GEIST MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2021 / TownePost.com

use the mixer again after that failure.”

success.

Even so, she persisted. While scrolling through Pinterest, Walsman spotted a video in which a woman was decorating cookies. A fresh spark of inspiration hit Walsman and she started looking up cookie recipes that she could try on her own. The process of finding the perfect recipe came through a lot of trial and error, but it ended in sweet

“I thought I had a pretty yummy cookie recipe, and it wasn’t anything like my dried cake,” she says. She taught herself how to make royal icing with just the right consistency, and then started to learn the fine art of cookie decorating. Again, with no real background

in art, she was back to teaching herself by trial and error, learning new skills as she went. “What’s funny is that I’m terrible at drawing,” Walsman says. “I’ve done calligraphy and I love to craft, so I felt it was just a learning curve. For some reason with the cookies, it just makes more sense to me as I work with the royal icing, and I don’t

have any reason as to why.”

also as tokens of appreciation.

After posting photo after photo of the results of her new baking skills on her personal social media pages, Walsman started to get requests for custom cookies. That’s when she decided to build her social media presence with separate Instagram and Facebook pages, and in August of 2019, Cookie Gifts by Chelsea was born. Each post features the latest designs Walsman has created with her vanilla sugar cookies.

“I average about five orders a week, which usually ends up being anywhere between 50 to 100 cookies a week,” Walsman says. “It’s really great because it provides a little extra income, and I can stay at home with my girls since they’re so small. I’m just happy I have an outlet for baking, because my family can’t keep eating cookies.”

Each order usually takes Walsman 48 hours to complete, due to the required drying time for royal icing. She balances working “All the cookies I decorate are vanilla sugar for her parents’ company with the cookie cookies, but sometimes I’ll offer seasonal business, as well as tending to her two cookies that I just make by the batch,” young daughters, Wednesday and Maeve. Walsman says. “I make a pretty yummy chocolate-chip cookie, if I do say so myself.” Wednesday is starting to get interested in watching her mom bake in the kitchen, so Walsman describes her typical cookie as soft there may be an assistant in the making. and chewy with a buttery taste. She prefers “She’ll want to watch me for a while, then softer cookies rather than the traditional she’ll want me to watch her do something hard sugar cookie. She believes she owns like spin in a circle,” Walsman says. at least 125 cookie cutters of all different shapes and sizes. which is why designing cookies is the perfect outlet for her. “My favorite cookie cutter is probably one that I like to use for messages that is cute and festive, but I also like my car cookie cutters,” she says. Walsman offers free delivery to customers located within a 25-minute radius of her home in Fortville, which includes Noblesville, McCordsville, Fishers and Geist. Paula Strauss and her daughter, Lacy Ross

A COOL ENDEAVOR MOO AND LOU FROZEN TREATS AND MORE SPREADS FLAVOR - AND KINDNESS Writer / Renee Larr Photographer / Robby Berry

Paula Strauss turned an unbelievable tragedy into a way to serve her community. Strauss owns and operates Moo and Lou Frozen Treats and More. She started the company in 2018 as a way to honor her late daughter, Maddie. “Maddie was born with spina bifida and hydrocephalus,” Strauss says. “When she was four months old, I found her face down on my grandma’s couch, not breathing. Maddie did have a faint heartbeat, so I started giving her rescue breaths until EMS arrived. She survived this against all odds but did end up with a hypoxic brain injury and cerebral palsy. She was still perfect. She passed away in 2014 from complications

from gallbladder surgery. It was very unexpected. After she passed, we started a nonprofit in her honor called Maddie Smiles.” The following is the organization’s mission statement: “To uplift, inspire, and motivate others to practice kindness and make the world a brighter place by engaging and educating our communities of the importance and effects of being kind.” “We started Moo and Lou as the for-profit side of our nonprofit,” Strauss says. “We take the trailer to various places and sell our frozen treats. The funds go toward committing random acts of kindness in Maddie’s honor.” The frozen treats include shaved ice, 42 / GEIST MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2021 / TownePost.com

lemonade slushies and Sundae’s homemade ice cream. “The community support has been amazing,” Strauss says. “We have over 400 followers on Facebook, and we have so many repeat customers. They love us because we have such a variety of frozen treats. They also know our family’s story, and they want to support us and our mission.” The name is a nod to Maddie and her sister, Lacy. “Maddie Moo and Lacy Lou are our nicknames for our daughters,” Strauss says. “We thought it was a great name for the business.”

In the cooler months, the Lawrence native pivots the business to accommodate the falling temperatures. “In the winter, we sell gourmet hot cocoa,” Strauss says. “We have whipped cream, marshmallows, Ghirardelli caramel and chocolate, and all sorts of good stuff.”

Superior risk-adjusted returns with an emphasis on

QUALITY ASSETS.

Strauss’s goal for Moo and Lou is simple. She wants to continue Maddie’s goal of making people smile. “We’re trying to make this a better world and trying to get people to be kind to each other,” Strauss says. “We hope we can get back into the schools and teach the kids about the importance of kindness. I grew up in this community, and my girls have been born and raised here. We do a lot in the area, but we’re hoping to expand further out into the community.” Operating Moo and Lou and Maddie Smiles is a full-time job for Strauss. “When Maddie was here, she would make people’s day,” Strauss says. “To see someone in a wheelchair, with as many things going on as she had, smile at people was amazing. Maddie Smiles and Moo and Lou have been very healing for us. I don’t think I’ll ever fully heal, but she is my every day.” Find Moo and Lou Frozen Treats and More at the Fort Ben Farmers Market each week, as well as local events, churches and neighborhoods. BROOKE’S PLACE NEEDS VOLUNTEERS SO CHILDREN, TEENS & YOUNG ADULTS CAN GRIEVE Writer / Kelly Young Photography Provided by Brooke’s Place

COVID-19 has greatly impacted the number of volunteers needed for Brooke’s Place to help children and families grieve gracefully. The nonprofit, which was established two decades ago, provides ongoing community support programs for children grieving the death of a loved one. The increased need for care and the decrease in volunteer facilitators has left many families on a waitlist. Brooke’s Place is a safe place for children, teens and young adults to grieve after experiencing the death of a loved one because at Brooke’s Place, they believe no child should grieve alone. The Childhood Bereavement Estimation Model (CBEM) from Judi’s House shows that 1 in 12 Hoosier children will experience the death of a parent or sibling by the age of 18. That startling statistic does not account for aunts, uncles, grandparents and caretakers. Take into effect the unexpected death of a loved due to the coronavirus or violence, and the

numbers and need are high. Brooke’s Place strives to transform grief into hope. No matter the situation or loss, Brooke’s Place works to ensure kids don’t have to grieve alone. According to Hilary Bercovitz, Outreach Coordinator for Brooke’s Place, there aren’t a lot of other options for children to grieve. “We know the gravity of the issue and the impact that the death of a loved one can have on a young person,” Bercovitz says. “We are all too aware that without help, these children can be impacted by incarceration, change in their mental health, and substance abuse.” Volunteers are the backbone of Brooke’s Place. With a staff of just nine people, Brooke’s Place relies on its volunteers to help empower teens in the midst of their grief. Before COVID hit, Brooke’s Place had 130 volunteers in place. Now, they have just 60. There are a variety of volunteer opportunities 44 / GEIST MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2021 / TownePost.com

at Brooke’s Place, but the greatest need right now is as a Support Group Facilitator. These special volunteers provide a safe and supportive environment for children, teens and young adults to grieve. “I had such an impactful first night,” shares Michelle Taylor, a new volunteer. “You can read so much about someone’s heart if you look into their eyes. What I saw in the two precious kiddos I had the privilege of spending time with was sadness, uncertainty, and maybe confusion of what was happening to them. What COVID has given me is the opportunity to see the heart through the eyes. I was deeply moved by their ways and communication. That was just the first night!” No counseling background is required, and the commitment is just eight hours monthly. Brooke’s Place provides the training, which is currently being held virtually. “People automatically assume it’s a sad place to work or volunteer, but there’s a lot of joy

and connections that happen here,” says Katie Harting, Brooke’s Place Advancement Manager. “Our volunteers tell us that they get a lot out of the session – sometimes they feel like they’re getting more out of it than the kids in the group. It’s a very rewarding volunteer experience.” Volunteers are required to go through an interview, background check and 16 hours of online training. Harting says the training helps volunteers learn to actively listen, be present and to be supportive of a child who is grieving. “We help volunteers understand developmentally where the kids are in their grief,” Harting adds. Programs and events may continue to look a little different in 2021 and beyond, but Brooke’s Place remains committed to helping every single child, teen and young adult walk through their grief journey safely.

“We don’t want anyone to suffer in silence,” Bercovitz says. Brooke’s Place was named for a young girl whose father died in the American Eagle Flight 4184 plane crash over Roselawn, IN., in 1994. Keenly aware of the need for ongoing support for Brooke and other children like her, Pamela J. Wright, a licensed family therapist, prompted the initial discussion and effort to develop a grieving center in

Indianapolis. In 1999, 41 young people attended the group’s first program. Since then, Brooke’s Place has served 20,000 children, youth and teens through its various grief and loss programs and camps. To volunteer, or to donate, visit brookesplace.org or call 317-705-9650. Brooke’s Place is located at 8935 North Meridian Street, Suite 200 in Indianapolis.
