Owner Tim Fontaine

Tim’s Bakery Celebrates 25 Years of Delicious Donuts In McCordsville Writer / Matt Keating Photographer / Ron Wise

Tim Fontaine, owner of the popular Tim’s Bakery, 6087 W. Broadway, McCordsville, is an early riser. He’s usually up at midnight, or sometimes earlier than that, to ensure that his customers get the absolute freshest baked goods for miles around. Fontaine’s donuts are so delicious they are worth getting up extra early for. He opens at 5 a.m. every Monday-Saturday, with display cases full of his delicious treats. He has customers that come from both near and far away to get one of his outstanding donuts, muffins or fritters. “One of the things that has really helped my business is the incredible growth in McCordsville, Fortville and the Geist area,”

Fontaine says. “We are located in a major transportation artery that is on the way for a lot of people. I also have a lot of customers who tell their friends about us, so word-ofmouth has helped us become more popular.” Tim’s Bakery, which opened in March 1993, has also grown steadily because Fontaine isn’t satisfied to just keep things the same at his shop. “We are always striving to better our product,” Fontaine says. “We always look for ways to make everything better. I enjoy hearing people tell me they love our food, and that they will keep coming back. That’s why I want to keep improving.” Customer favorites include the alwayspopular yeast donuts, the Tiger Tails, which are a white and chocolate yeast mix, and the Long John’s donuts, which are maple or chocolate iced. 6 / GEIST MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2018 / atGeist.com

Tim’s delicious Butterfly Cinnamon rolls are also a big hit. “The yeast donuts are the quickest item to go,” Fontaine says. “We get a lot of customers who come in early to get them. Yeast donuts are a donut shop staple, and a big hit in the Midwest.” Fontaine’s favorite donuts are the Maple Nut Rolls and the Maple Pecan Rolls. “Anything with maple icing and nuts is good for me,” he says. “I love them, and I get a lot of customers asking about them.” Other popular treats at Tim’s Bakery include the jelly and Bavarian donuts, donut holes, glazed apple fritters, coffee and their blueberry muffins. “Our blueberry fritters also go pretty quickly every day,” Fontaine says “We get

“One of the things that has really helped my business is the incredible growth in McCordsville, Fortville and the Geist area.” a lot of people buying those fast or asking about them.” Fontaine, who is originally from the Greenfield & Maxwell area, added that he has several long-time customers, but he also sees a lot of new faces regularly. “There is some customer turnover,” Fontaine says. “People relocate their residence or get a job someplace farther away, but we have a strong customer base that keeps coming back.” Fontaine noted that early risers usually have the largest selection to choose from. “You need to catch us early,” Fontaine laughed. “That’s when you have a full case to choose from. There a lot of things gone by 10 a.m., but we still have a lot to choose from, and we have been getting customers to buy our other treats they can enjoy throughout the day such as popcorn, pretzels, Carmel Corn, milk and soft drinks.” Fontaine closes at 11 a.m. every day. “We hope to eventually expand, but we would stay in this spot,” Fontaine says. “People always know where to find us. Families and teachers at the Lawrence schools and the police department have been very loyal customers. It’s been great to see so many people stay with us over the last 25 years.” Tim’s Bakery is located at 6087 W. Broadway, McCordsville. You can give them a call at 317-335-3344. They are open 5-11 a.m. Monday-Saturday and closed on Sundays. atGeist.com / NOVEMBER 2018 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 7

Owner Sue Colombini

Tangerine Cards & Gifts Opens In Geist Writer / Pat Carlini Photographer / Josh Brown & Pat Carlini

Tangerine Cards & Gifts is now open in Geist. The 1,600 square-foot space is located at 10130 Brooks School Road just off of Fall Creek Road. The space has been remodeled to house rows of greeting cards, gifts for the house, gifts for girlfriends, hostess gifts and even gifts for the baby, too.

“We were excited to open here,” Colombini says. ”There just seemed to be a void here for a place where you could pick up a card, as well as a gift on the go. It’s been doing great so far.” Colombini shops the Atlanta area to merchandise her two stores.

Some of the novelty finds Tangerine has to offer includes items for the home such as pillows, tea towels, BlueQ oven mitts, along with personalized cutting boards, Owner Sue Colombini, who also owns the wine stoppers and serving bowls. You can Tangerine store in Carmel says she is excited also find Swell water bottles, baby clothes to be in Geist. and items for the nursery such as toys atGeist.com / NOVEMBER 2018 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 9

and “family is everything” and “this is our happy place” wall decor. There are shoes by Matisse, Boho Bandeau headbands, hand lotions and soaps, a nice assortment of jewelry, including Mantra Band bracelets and Marianna collection necklaces. You will also find seasonal décor such as Halloween-inspired glassware and napkins and several “State of mine” items in the shape of Indiana and items geared to the locals such as “the real housewives of Geist” cups. Colombini says seasonal merchandise is also out along with sweaters and

transitional clothing to ease into fall. There’s also some reduced prices on their remaining summer inventory, as well. You can’t miss the extensive collection of greeting cards as you enter the store and there is pretty much a card for every occasion. As for the name of the store, how did Colombini come up with Tangerine? Colombini says it is the name of a store she heard of a few years ago. “I always remembered that name so I thought maybe that will work for everyone else,” she says. So, remember the name “Tangerine” for your next card and gift-giving occasion. Tangerine Cards & Gifts in Geist is open Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. – 8 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. – 7 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Sunday Noon to 5 p.m. Learn more about Tangerine Cards & Gifts at tangerinegifts.com or give them a call at 317774-1880.

Owner Schuyler Glancy

Local Coffee Shop Inside Geist Christian Church Serves Up a Heavenly Cup of Joe Writer / Megan Jefferson Photographer / Michael Durr

Schuyler Glancy was a junior in high school when he started working for Higher Grounds coffee shop. At that time, Higher Grounds’ headquarters is in Fort Wayne, and they had a couple of shops here in the Indianapolis area. Glancy worked at their shop located inside Geist Christian Church, on the corner of 126th Street and Promise Road. Glancy enjoyed his time working at the coffee shop, but he stopped working there when he graduated from high school and went on to college. After college, he worked a couple of different jobs, owned a candle

business and also owned a seasonal ice cream store. An entrepreneur at heart, he was interested in owning and operating something new. Glancy wondered what became of the little coffee shop he used to work at inside Geist Christian Church. He contacted the church and learned that Higher Grounds no longer operated there, and the church was running a coffee shop there themselves and was about to close it, as it wasn’t very profitable for them. Glancy offered to lease the space. Geist Christian Church agreed. Glancy also reached out to Higher Grounds in Fort Wayne to ask about opening a branch in Geist. Higher Grounds wasn’t 12 / GEIST MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2018 / atGeist.com

interested in expanding, however, they gave him permission to open a store and use the brand. Glancy was thrilled, especially to be in the exact location where he worked as a high school student. “I think it’s the people,” Glancy says when asked why he wanted to own a coffee shop. “In general, the coffee industry is great because of the people you serve. It’s almost like you get to know your customers and they’re part of your family. Coffee is a comfort drink. You get a hot cup of coffee and have a conversation and it’s just so welcoming and inviting and it’s something I’m really happy to be a part of.” Higher Grounds is not only for Geist

Christian church members, it’s open to the public as well. They are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. Because they are located one block down from Fishers High School, it’s a great space for students after school. “We have lots of tables and comfortable chairs for students to meet and do homework and study groups,” Glancy says “Obviously, because we are in a church it’s also a wonderful place for Bible studies as well.” Higher Grounds is located within the church lobby so it’s very spacious. There’s a

friendly, family vibe. There is a nice outside area where kids can draw with chalk. Trails circle the property and lead to a creek that runs through the backyard. Glancy loves being located within the church. It’s a mutually beneficial arrangement. “It’s kind of a cool partnership because we have customers who are coming in just for the coffee shop but they also get that church exposure too if they’re looking for it,” he says. “If they are looking for a new church,

we certainly have a lot of information to provide. Whether you’re coming here for the coffee shop or the church, you have exposure to the opposite, if you want it made available to you. It’s a cool opportunity for all of our customers, just by coming into the building.” High Grounds Coffee is located inside Geist Christian Church at the corner of 126th Street and Promise Road in Fishers. FORTVILLE’S IVY HOUSE BED & BREAKFAST CELEBRATES 18 YEARS OF PROVIDING A HISTORIC HAVEN FOR TRAVELERS Writer / Julie Young Photographer / Ron Wise

Jim and Linda Nolte never planned to own a bed & breakfast. Jim was a retired government worker who was a township trustee while Linda worked with special needs children. However, after a 25th wedding anniversary trip to Bar Harbor, ME, the couple began to dream of turning their empty nest into a historic haven for weary travelers. The result is the Ivy House Bed & Breakfast. Established in 2000 and located in Fortville, the Ivy House is a three-room B&B that offers guests comfortable, cozy and luxurious accommodations along with convenient access to local amenities in Indianapolis, Fishers, Noblesville and more. “It took us about nine months to get the inn

ready in terms of licensing and insurance and there is always something to do around here, but we knew we had a beautiful home with a unique history and we knew our guests would love it as much as we do,” Linda says.

Nolte says in the 18 years that Ivy House has operated as a B&B, they have hosted guests from all over the U.S. and from as far away as Canada, England, Norway and Jess E. She says some guests come for the bed-and-breakfast experience, while others Maxwell, IN built the Ivy House in 1921, choosing the site because it was the highest may be looking for a comfortable respite when visiting family or friends. Nolte says you couldn’t make that kind of bond at a traditional hotel. The Noltes still travel from time to time and they still like to stay in other bed & breakfast establishments because it gives them a chance to meet other owners and trade ideas. Although it is a lot of work and there is always something to do to keep the inn running smoothly, Nolte says it’s worth it because they love what they do. “I wake up early to cook breakfast and sometimes I might be doing laundry at 11 p.m., but it is the best job in the world and we wouldn’t trade it for anything,” she says. L to R: Brandon Leum, Mike Riekhof and Erik Robinson are leading the charge, bring a full slate of events in November to raise awareness for men's health.

Writer / Josh Brown Photographer / Brian Brosmer

Over the years, “Movember" or “No-shave November” has become quite popular in raising awareness for men’s health. Two local organizations are piggy-backing off the idea but looking to dig a little deeper than not shaving for a month. Building a Refuge and the Peyton Riekhof Foundation for Youth Hope have partnered to bring a full slate of November Men’s Health events to Fishers. Though the events will be held in Fishers, all men, regardless of where you live, are welcome to attend. The goal — to break down the stigma of men’s health issues like depression and suicide and give men an outlet to talk, listen, hang out, share stories and build relationships. “Hopefully we save some lives and get men

out of that mindset of being too proud to admit they have issues or talk,” says Mike Riekhof, founder of The Peyton Riekhof Foundation. “We want men to realize through these events that they are not alone. There are plenty of us out there who have baggage.” Riekhof met Erik Robinson years ago at a faith-based community event in Indy. Over the years, Robinson also attended some of the Peyton Riekhof Foundation’s Night of Hope events. It didn’t take long for the two men to form a bond and a friendship. That friendship led to conversations around men’s health and Building a Refuge was born along with the idea for the men’s health events in November. The organization’s goal of bringing “hope and encouragement to men and assisting in building community to walk with them through life” is one born through Robinson’s own life experiences. 18 / GEIST MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2018 / atGeist.com

“I actually wound up in prison from 2012 to 2014 through some bad decisions that I’d made,” Robinson says. “A lot of the stuff I was dealing with leading up to that got worse because I isolated myself. It got so bad that it ended up with an attempt on my own life. When I think about this event and think about how we can get guys there, I think about myself. Mike and I have made it our mission to get the word out about this to everyone. “The biggest thing we want men to realize is we are not asking anything of them when they come to these events,” Robinson adds. “The only thing we are asking them to do is come. That is the first step. The idea behind the events is creating and developing community. Hopefully, men will build relationships and feel like they can eventually share what they might be going through. But right now, this isn't a Kum Ba Yah event where we will call men out specifically asking them to share. That won’t happen.”

HOPEFULLY WE SAVE SOME LIVES AND GET MEN OUT OF THAT MINDSET OF BEING TOO PROUD TO ADMIT THEY HAVE ISSUES OR TALK. The events begin Nov. 3 with the One Story at a Time Kickoff event from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Fishers High School. Bob Kravitz will emcee and four speakers will share their stories with breakfast and lunch provided. The following Monday, Nov. 5 will be the No Shave Movember Gathering at the Sun King Brewery & Tap Room in Fishers from 7 to 9 p.m. for a time to hang out, enjoy food and pre-beard growth photos will be taken. The November events conclude Nov. 13 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Harley Davidson of Indy for a “Men’s Cafe with Collaborative Change” get together. The idea for the Men’s Cafe is a laid-back atmosphere for men to share ideas, gain a support system and continue building community. The Finale event wraps up the men’s health month on Dec. 1 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Harley Davidson of Indy. The Finale event will be familyfriendly and include BBQ, a live band, college football, Sun King beer and more. Participants will also be able to compare beards for a final photo.

“We feel like the youth are starting to get it,” Riekhof says. “If they’ve got some kind of mental illness or issue they know to go talk to somebody. Erik came up with the idea to do a program for the men, either men who might have someone in their family dealing with these issues or maybe they are in a rut or hurting. I was all for it. The more I’ve been involved, the more I’ve gotten sucked into it because there is an obvious need for this. My goal is to help men but also to reach dads that have kids that might have mental health issues and don’t know what to do. We want to give them some hope too and some resources and direction for them.”

Throughout the events, groups from all walks of life will be on hand to meet and talk with participants. “This is not a religious event,” Robinson says. “But there will be local pastors there, therapists, men’s groups, outdoors groups and many other different organizations. We want to provide outlets for men to plug in and form relationships. We will create an environment that isn’t intimidating.” The Peyton Riekhof Foundation for Youth Hope focuses on mental health awareness for youth and students, and their mission won’t change. Still, Riekhof says as he and Robinson talked more about men’s health, it made sense to develop a partnership and bring this event to the city. All November events will be for men ages 16 and up, which will provide an opportunity for youth, possibly fathers and sons, to attend the events together. atGeist.com / NOVEMBER 2018 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 19

Both Riekhof and Robinson say they hope to do more beyond the events planned for November. Their goal is to continue building community and plan follow up events in the future for men to check in and continue building relationships. “Our hope is we can package this up and present it to different organizations to use in the future, too,” Robinson says. “I don’t want to just say this is the month of November only. We want this to continue however the men want to go moving forward.” All Building a Refuge events are free for men to attend. KEEPING IT SIMPLE THE ROOST HAS BEEN SERVING UP DELICIOUS BREAKFAST FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS Writer / Matt Keating Photographer / Mark Bell

“Keep it simple.”

deciding to go eat. We want you to think of The Roost or any of the other Sahm’s Restaurants as one of the three or four places that pop in to your head when you are selecting a place to eat.”

That’s a motto that has led to several years of success for The Roost, located at 7371 East The Roost first opened in 1996, and Sahm 116th Street. says he still has customers who have been with him since the beginning. “We offer good food that is consistent in its quality,” says Ed Sahm, CEO/president “We have really been able to get people who of Sahm’s Companies. “The Roost has would drive 20-30 miles to visit us at The remained popular because we keep things Roost,” Sahm says. “They would come as far easy and simple. We have a wide selection as Elwood and Anderson, Indiana, because of items to choose from, we have excellent they loved the food and the family feeling. service, and it’s all at a decent price.” We have had a lot of regulars who have really Customers have responded to Sahm’s business philosophy. “I just feed people,” Sahm says from his brand new restaurant at Sahm’s Ale House, 12819 New Market Street, West Clay Village, Carmel. “I don’t want you have to think too much about where you are

been loyal to us for decades. They keep coming back and tell us they will be with us for a long time. We also have people who like going to all of the Sahm’s locations.” Sahm says that Sahm’s restaurants open in neighborhoods instead of hot spots where other dining establishments have already set up shop. 22 / GEIST MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2018 / atGeist.com

“To me, it doesn’t make sense to open a restaurant in a place like Mass Avenue or another location where you have such a wide choice of places to eat,” Sahm says. “We go to underserved areas. We open in residential neighborhoods where people don’t have to drive very far to get to us. We choose good local spots in Central Indiana, such as Fishers and Carmel that are really close to homes. We have had a long history of picking good locations.” Sahm has several north side locations at Big Lug Country Pub in Pendleton, Sahm’s at Pendleton, Rockstone in Fishers, Sahm’s Restaurant in Fishers, Sahm’s Bar & Grill in Fishers and Sahm’s at Parkwood. The West Clay Village location opened in February. Sahm’s also has multiple midtown and downtown locations. “Guests have told us they like knowing what they are going to get,” Sahm says. “We offer local and fresh food that is popular among

the whole family. We make our breads, biscuits and soups from scratch each day. Nothing is frozen. We really want people to know that. Our biscuits and gravy are really great, but that’s just one option. There are so many to choose from.” The Roost’s house specialities are numerous. They include multiple choices of pancakes, including Peanut Butter Cup Pancakes with whipped butter cream, Hot Sweet Cinnamon Pancakes and Granola Pecan Crunch, among others.

Sahm doesn’t have a particular favorite, but does love their steaks, chops and salads. “I have a lot of regulars who keep coming back to order their favorites like the pork tenderloin, or the biscuits and gravy,” he says. “Some people love the waffles, or our club sandwiches, which are also popular. People respond to the freshness and to the fact that we keep everything at a reasonable price.”

A wide variety of omelettes, eggs and other breakfast items are served all day at The Roost. Lunch is served from 10:30-3 p.m. The Roost’s “Smashin Burgers” include The Clint Eastwood with BBQ sauce, bacon, cheddar, mozzarella and fried onion rings and The Bomb with homemade meatloaf, mozzarella, shredded Romaine and cilantro Sahm is excited about the new Sahm’s chipotle sauce. Several different sandwiches, Ale House in Carmel’s West Clay, which he co-owns with his son, Eddie and soups and salads are also available.

Brewmaster Scott Ellis. “We are once again getting into a great neighborhood setting,” Sahm says. “We are in the same spot where The Lit Moose used to be. We have made a lot of changes through remodeling, and we have added a lot more seating. I think the residents here are going to love it, and once again, we will keep it simple.” The Roost is located at 7371 East 116th Street. GRAB A SLICE PASSIONE PANE WOOD-OVEN PIZZA & BREAD SERVES UP AUTHENTIC ITALIAN PIES “It was a huge opportunity to deliver something different from what you can get around here,” he says. “I opened the Passione Pane Wood-Oven Pizza & Bread restaurant in April 2014, and I’ve been has been serving up authentic pies for nearly very happy with my choice. I love the five years. community support from the great people in Fishers. They love our pizza, and we give Owner Sam Chamsine, who grew up in them warm and friendly service.” Udine, Italy, has spent a large part of his life perfecting his food. The name of the restaurant is Italian for

“Another big reason everything tastes so fresh is that we support local farmers and many of our produce is organic,” Chamsine says. “Our oven is imported and is a 100 percent all-stone, cooking temperature 950-degree ‘Pavesi Wood Oven,’ which is one of the top wood oven manufacturing companies in Italy. Everything is fresh and made from scratch. It’s very high-quality pizza.”

“Everything we make here is 100 percent Italian, and I make sure all of our food tastes great,” Chamsine says. “I have spent more than 29 years in the restaurant industry between Italy and Germany. I started out as a pastry chef, and I owned an Italian restaurant in Berlin called De ‘Noantri.’ We have a lot of gourmet chefs there, and we serve some of the best food in the city.” Chamsine says Fishers was the perfect spot to open his restaurant.

Passione Pane serves 12 individual, onesize pizzas, with a large variety of selections to choose from. They include Pizza Margherita, Pizza Romana with anchovies, capers, olives and oregano, Pizza Bianca with Gorgonzola cheese, pear, walnuts and organic baby arugula, Pizza Contadina with potatoes, homemade sausage and rosemary, Pizza Primavera with organic tomatoes and 12-Month parmigiana Reggiano and a special pizza with homemade sausage,

WELCOME TO BERNIE’S PLACE STUDENT-RUN RESTAURANT IS A POPULAR PICK FOR LAWRENCE LUNCH CROWD Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided

There is always something delicious to be enjoyed at Bernie’s Place, a student-run restaurant at The McKenzie Center for Innovation and Technology, 7250E. 75th Street, Indianapolis. During the school year, Bernie’s Place, which has reasonable prices, draws a lot of hungry customers looking for a good meal. Gracie Sahm, with the school’s Culinary Arts Department, says the first day of lunch for the 2018-19 school year began Sept. 12. “Bernie’s Place is named after Bernard K. McKenzie, a former Lawrence Township Schools superintendent,” Sahm says. “Many career and technical education schools have student-run restaurants. We like to think ours is the best.” Bernie’s Place is open from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., Wednesday-Friday when school is in

session. The students are always welcoming new customers. Customers enter the restaurant through Door 2, in the southwest corner of the building. “The students typically enjoy the restaurant environment,” Sahm says. “They go through all the rotations throughout the year, so they can get experience in each kitchen and dining room position and hone their skills.”

Southern Fried Chicken Salad, Tropical Chicken Salad, Fried Tenderloin and our Meatloaf Sandwich,” Sahm says. “We have weekly sandwich and salad specials, which are very popular. We have homemade dessert specials each week and homemade soup specials daily.” There is also a Santa Fe Salad and a House Salad.

Other menu items include The Bernie Burger (an excellent choice), a one-third ground beef patty served on a toasted bun with lettuce and tomato, a Spinach Melt, a Spinach “The students also learn The National dip grilled with sliced bacon, tomatoes and Restaurant Association’s ProStart curriculum, cheddar cheese on toasted whole wheat, which covers culinary topics, cost control and a Chicken Breast and a Club Panini with purchasing and inventory,” Sahm says. ham, turkey, bacon, Swiss Cheese, American Cheese, tomatoes and mayo on Texas toast. Other options are The Deep Fried Fish Sandwich or a BLT. The side items include french fries and sweet potato fries, a side salad, onion rings, coleslaw and Kettle Chips. The dessert menu includes freshly baked cookies, vanilla ice cream, a sundae or “Today’s House-Made Special,” where a student baker prepares a dessert for your dining pleasure. Various specials are offered on their monthly calendar, too.

General, Cosmetic, & Implant Dentistry For The Entire Family

When asked what her favorite Bernie’s Place menu item is, Sahm says, “That is an impossible question for me to answer. I would not put any item on the menu which I didn’t love.” Sahm adds that the restaurant’s loyal customers have kept the restaurant thriving. “The community has been supportive of Bernie’s Place for the last 27 years,” Sahm says. “Since the renovation of Bernie’s Place two years ago, our customer base has increased dramatically. The kitchen is state-of-the art and the dining room is beautiful. Many of our staff eat here daily.”

8 TIPS FOR HOSTING THE PERFECT THANKSGIVING Writer / Shelly Bergman

Hosting family and friends for the holidays is daunting. The expectations of a Pinterest worthy meal and decor is high. We've lost what the true meaning of Thanksgiving is. In our family, Thanksgiving was the only time of the year we saw the entire family. Selfishly, I secretly wanted us to order pizza every year making less work and more time to spend with people. I still believe it's necessary to streamline areas of Thanksgiving day to make less work for the host. I recently heard the statement “Getting Ready is a Key Aspect of Performance.” Thanksgiving Day is as close to a performance as I give all year, so preparing is crucial. There are many steps you can complete 3 to 4 weeks ahead of time to reduce stress. There are also several hacks you can use to keep things running smoothly on the big day.

1. MAKE SURE YOU PLAN A MENU THAT ONLY REQUIRES ONE OVEN

Have guests bring the sides and desserts leaving the oven free for you to do the turkey. Be sure to request contributed items to things that are easy to transport and set up once they arrive. Items like side salads, dinner rolls, wine, cold appetizers and cranberry sauce are perfect. If you need to keep food warm, place a towel and a bowl of hot water in the bottom of a cooler. Then, put your pans in the cooler until it’s time to serve. The food will still be warm for up to 2 hours.

2. PLAN AN OUTDOOR ACTIVITY

As long as it's not raining, spend a little time outside with your family. Start a game of football, make a pumpkin ring toss, take a nature bingo hike. Anything that gets the family outside for some fun, especially if there will be kids. You can also have 32 / GEIST MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2018 / atGeist.com

coloring books and board games set out on a table to keep the kids busy while dinner is being prepped.

3. DELEGATE TASKS

Your friends and family want to help. Write out tasks ahead of time with the names of people who you know will offer their help. Have them be in charge of the outdoor activity, keep drink stations stocked, wrangle the kids for dinner and help serve. Make sure you tell at least one family member to take a few photos.

4. PREPARE THE TABLE

Lay out all the serving dishes on the table with note cards of what will be served inside. Shop your house or yard for table decor. It's likely you won't need to buy a bunch of decor. Get everything set up how you'd like it to look, snap a picture and put all the dishes and decor in a laundry basket

out of the way so you can easily pull it out Thanksgiving morning.

5. EAT EARLY

Rather than filling up on veggies and hard-boiled eggs, have a plan to eat soon after guests arrive. This will leave plenty of time with family before it gets late. Plus, it gives time for bellies to settle before dessert.

6. PLAN THE FLOW OF THE HOUSE

Think about how people will travel through your house. Have the drink station out of the way so people don't feel like a bother when refilling their drinks. Put the kids activity table in another room, in the basement or outside to keep them from running under foot during dinner prep.

7. MAKE CLEAN UP EASY

If you want to use grandma's china for this special occasion, I understand. There is also great joy in using paper plates when everyone's able to clean up after themselves. Other time savers are to use a plastic crock pot liner or plastic cups with a marker to write names. Make sure you have an empty dishwasher before dinner so you can easily toss in serving ware. To make sure you get to host Thanksgiving next year, have a plan for storing leftovers. Purchase a bunch of inexpensive takehome containers or gallon bags for people to dish up their own leftovers.

When members of the U.S. military are deployed overseas, their significant others and children are often left shouldering additional daily household burdens. That was certainly the dilemma Fishers resident and Navy Reserve member Elliott Hultgren and his family faced in 2015 when he was notified of an upcoming year-long deployment to Djibouti, Africa. “My wife and I had three kids at that point, and we have four now,” says Hultgren, who currently serves as Fishers deputy mayor of administration. “I realized my wife would be doing so many of the chores on her own, and there was a sense of guilt with leaving a whole pile of stuff in your loved one’s lap. All the little things like house chores and mowing the lawn pile up with children in

the picture.” Mayor Scott Fadness and Fishers Department of Public Works (DPW) Director Eric Pethtel had gotten wind of Hultgren’s deployment news, and began discussing doing something nice for his family during his absence. “Mayor Fadness said we should just send some of our Public Works team to mow Elliott’s lawn and take care of shoveling the driveway,” Pethtel recalls. “It was just a casual answer during a conversation we were having, but that was the spark of the idea, and we ended up going through the legal steps and came up with a plan.” That plan became formally known as the Fishers Hometown Help for Heroes (HHFH) initiative, and, since 2015, 20 Fishers families in Hultgren’s situation 34 / GEIST MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2018 / atGeist.com

have received DPW assistance according to Pethtel. The program’s services include driveway and sidewalk snow removal within 24 hours after snow accumulation of more than two inches and lawn mowing and trimming services on an as-needed basis during summer months. Any family living in Fishers with at least one head of its household deployed in a branch of the U.S. Armed Forces is eligible for the program for the duration of the deployment. “It may not seem like much, but when you put yourself in our shoes having multiple kids and so much going on, it provides a sense of comfort and support to my wife and to me,” Hultgren says. “It’s huge to not have to worry over the logistics of those kinds of things, like getting the lawn taken care of, and focus on doing what I need to

be doing on my mission.” Pethtel says the Fishers DPW has been able to incorporate HHFH duties into its ongoing city workload without creating any budgetary or staffing issues. “It's part of our daily work duty — we do all the things like taking care of city hall and the city parks, and then we take care of our active military,” he says, adding that the DPW has helped as many as seven military households at one time since 2015. “I’m proud of our team. We have people that are eager to be the ones to do this work for our military families here.”

BUILDING WEALTH. One personalized portfolio at a time.

Of all the programs and initiates the Fishers DPW has offered to residents during Pethtel’s 27 years with the department, he says the Hometown Help for Heroes is his favorite. “I thoroughly enjoy being able to provide this to our local families,” he says. “I have two sons in the military, and I know what it's like to have them away. I'm very proud of our team and their willingness to step up and do this work.” Hultgren hopes the initiative catches on in cities across the country via social media and word-of-mouth. “In the military, you get to meet people from all 50 states. I told everyone I could about this program and from what I could see, no one else is doing this in any other cities,” Hultgren says. “People were blown away that my city back home was out mowing lawns and shoveling snow. We would love every county and city to adopt this. We’d love for it to be the start of something big.” To learn more about the Hometown Help for Heroes initiative and apply for assistance, call the Fishers Department of Public Works at 317-595-3160 or visit fishers.in.us/685/HometownHelp-for-Heroes for more information or to apply.

hen my children were young and I was trying to teach them proper behavior for play inside the house, my ongoing mantra was, “Don’t hit. Don’t kick. Don’t throw.”

wide receiver and running back, which was much more to his liking. In ninth grade, he transitioned to quarterback. Though he was thriving in football, he still played basketball and baseball all through high school.

Not so for Jim Sorgi, who played for the Indianapolis Colts from 2004 to 2009 as Peyton Manning’s backup quarterback. He spent much of his childhood hitting, kicking and throwing, and it served him well.

“Football is more of a physical game. Baseball is a game of finesse,” Sorgi says. “Basketball is working in synchronicity. But they all teach something about working as a team.”

Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Sorgi was the only boy living in a house with four sisters. Now the tables have turned as he’s raising three boys—Jimmy (12), Jackson (10) and Jace (4) — with his wife, Lana.

That’s why Sorgi is a big believer in kids pursuing multiple sports.

Growing up, Sorgi always had a ball in his hands — usually baseball or basketball, as football wasn’t his favorite initially. “I was a tall third-grader so they asked me to play defense, but I wasn’t big and there was a lot of hitting and physical play,” says Sorgi, who quit, then picked up the sport again in middle school. Though he was still tall and thin, this time around he played

NFL draft. In 2010, he signed with the New York Giants. After injuring his right shoulder, however, he was placed on seasonending injury reserve and the following year was released from his contract. Though he hoped to get signed elsewhere following surgery, it wasn’t meant to be. “Every little boy who plays sports dreams of becoming a professional athlete,” Sorgi says. “I got to live that dream in the NFL. We all wish we could play for 20 years, but seven is good.”

As Sorgi settled into the second chapter “Being able to switch gears and execute in his life, he moved back to Hendricks different game plans in order to achieve a goal County (the family had previously lived translates to every aspect of life,” he says. in Avon when he played for the Colts but now resides in Brownsburg, his wife’s In his youth, Sorgi didn’t know what his hometown). path looked like. He simply knew he had an affinity for sports. “This seemed like a good place to live,” Sorgi says. “A lot of my former teammates feel the “I loved the kind of chess match — the same way about the Indianapolis area. It’s game within the game, so to speak,” says clean and full of friendly people.” Sorgi, who played for the University of Wisconsin. After graduation, he got drafted Plus, now he has more time to coach his by the Colts in the sixth round of the 2004 sons’ sports teams and take his kids hunting 38 / GEIST MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2018 / atGeist.com

and fishing. Sorgi, who used to vacation at his grandparent’s cabin in northern Michigan, was forced to take a sabbatical from hunting when he was playing pro football because the two seasons overlapped. He still stays plenty busy with multiple work endeavors. Sorgi started doing pre-season television games in 2012 — the first year Andrew Luck was with the Colts. He’s now in his sixth year acting as color commentator for the radio — a job that entails doing pre-game and post-game segments, along with a Monday evening radio show where he discusses the previous day’s game. He’s often asked why he doesn’t pursue a job with CBS or the NFL Network. It’s simple, he’s perfectly content with where he is. “I get to call the game of football on the radio while rooting for the team I formerly played for,” Sorgi says. “It’s a blast.” In college, Sorgi majored in Business Management, a degree he never thought he’d use once he got drafted. He was wrong. In 2013, he launched Sorgi Sports with business partner Joey Vandever, an Avon resident who played in the MLB for the St. Louis Cardinals. The pair provides physical therapy and skills improvement equipment to the general public at an affordable price. “Everyone deserves to get back to good health, back to work, back to life as quickly as possible, whether you’re a professional athlete or not,” Sorgi says. Throughout his career, Sorgi has witnessed guys who have endured concussions and other painful injuries. Some have suffered memory loss and have had to retire early. He’s pleased, however, to see that the league is proactively taking steps to make the game safer by implementing new rules and regulations about hitting. For instance, players can no longer use the crown of their helmet to make a tackle on any part of the body, nor can they drive a player into the ground or hit a defenseless player without reason. “These new rules are all designed to protect the guys so they don’t get injured or sustain concussions that could affect them down

the line,” Sorgi says. “The NFL is also eliminating getting a running start on kickoffs and double-team blocks on kickoff returns.” When Sorgi thinks back to his younger years, he recalls many sports idols he’s admired such as Ken Griffey Jr., who played 22 years in Major League Baseball. “He looked like he was always having fun,” Sorgi says. His football fave is Barry Sanders, a running back who played for the Detroit Lions. “I loved when he would score a touchdown and there wasn’t a whole lot of flash,” Sorgi says. “He would just hand the ball to the official and sit down. I respected that.” Sorgi appreciates seeing teammates bond as it inevitably steps up their performance. During Sorgi’s six years with the Colts, he was fortunate to not witness much turnover.

“It’s the bus rides, the plane rides, the locker room, smoking cigars after a big win, going to the Kentucky Derby after we won the Super Bowl [XLI against the Chicago Bears],” Sorgi says. “Those moments stick with you. They’re the ones that you wish you could go back and relive all over again.”

“In the NFL, there’s always the distinct possibility that guys you count on are there one day, gone the next,” Sorgi says. “That makes it hard for a team to mesh. Luckily, we kept most of our guys around.” Sorgi’s best memories center around the team’s camaraderie.

PURE AIR ENVIRONMENTAL (317) 760-7873 pureairenvironmental.com

Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing

As we head into cold and flu season, it’s wise to think about air purification, especially since according to the state health department, 195 Hoosiers died from influenza last year. Pure Air Environmental is an authorized distributor of the Puradigm Air Purification and Surface Decontamination system, which eliminates 99.9 percent of bacteria through the air and indoor surfaces. This includes removing any single-cell bacteria such as staph, MRSA, listeria, salmonella, C. Diff, influenza, common cold and many other harmful pathogens. “This technology really applies to everyone. If you’re breathing, you will benefit from Puradigm,” says Pure Air Marketing Director Jon Hartley. Old-school technology was extremely passive, allowing air to simply pass through your ventilation system while UV light attempted to remove mold and allergens in the ducts only. It really did very little to improve the overall indoor air environment. Hartley describes the Puradigm system as an aggressive, proactive push technology. “It’s advanced now to the point where it’s proactively pushing two million highenergy ion clusters out into your physical environment which destroy impurities and pathogens in 1/76th of a second in the air and on surfaces,” Hartley says. “That’s why it’s so effective and protective.” Not only does the Puradigm air system remove bacteria, but it also has been clinically proven to remove 99.9 percent of mold and volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) that are off-gassing from new

building products such as glues, adhesives, formaldehyde and even the plastics and materials that are in building products themselves. VOC’s are a concern as the vast majority have been linked to carcinogens. Pure Air Environmental, a small familyowned business, began five years ago as a radon mitigation company. “Indiana has a great deal of radon gas due to our soil material,” Hartley says. “What’s in our substrate beneath our homes gets up into them and it can’t escape because we’ve built our homes so airtight.” Ventilating radio-active gas from homes is crucial as statistically 21,000 Americans die each year due to long-term radon gas exposure. Protection is as easy as installing a radon mitigation system to safely vent the gas to the exterior. The EPA recommends testing your home every two years as radon gas levels fluctuate due to environmental factors. Pure Air Environmental also cleans air ducts and offers mold remediation services to remove black toxic molds and the toxins they’re off-gassing. You may not think much about indoor air quality, but Hartley says people really should. The EPA recently released a study that showed that poor indoor air quality can reduce one’s life expectancy by 5-7 years. Hartley also cites another study that identifies indoor air quality as the number one threat to our 44 / GEIST MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2018 / atGeist.com

children’s generation in the coming years. That’s due, in large part, to the fact that society functions differently nowadays. “Generations ago, people used to open their windows and let their homes breathe,” Hartley says. “Now the thought is on energy efficiency and we seal them up tight. Nobody opens their windows anymore. As a result, they’re not getting that fresh air exchange and building those immunities to bacteria by being exposed to natural environments.” It can be hard to convince people of the dangers of poor air quality because it’s not a tangible problem in front of them. It often times does not alert any of your five senses. That’s why air quality testing is so vital. “It’s important to know what you’re breathing in your home and what you are putting in your lungs because it does make a health difference,” Hartley adds. “Every breath matters.” For more information, call 317-760-7873 or email info@pureairenvironmental.com. You can visit Pure Air Environmental online at pureairenvironmental.com.

KILL 99.9% OF ALL AIRBORNE BACTERIA, VIRUSES, AND OTHER HARMFUL PATHOGENS Cold weather is already here and winter is coming. You can better protect your family from the flu and cold season with the help of Pure Air Environmental. There were an alarming 195 influenza-associated deaths last year, according to the Indiana State Department of Health. Aside from frequent hand washing and the flu shot, Hoosiers have limited options when it comes to protecting themselves and their families. Pure Air is changing that. Pure Air Environmental provides a new powerful alternative with its patented Puradigm technology, a costeffective aid that can reduce the spread and prevalence of contagious diseases in the indoor air environment. Puradigm removes harmful pathogens and reduces the spread of infectious bacteria. Its technology prevents pathogens from incubating on shared surfaces including, door handles, faucets, remote controls and more, reducing the chances of crosscontamination. Within the first two hours of installing a Puradigm system, immediate reductions can occur with a 99.9 percent effective rate in the first 24 hours. The system provides 24/7 protection and can destroy airborne bacteria from a sneeze or a cough within 1/76th of a second. Homeowners, businesses, healthcare facilities, professional sports teams and schools across the country are using Puradigm for creating safer and cleaner environments. The technology offers continual protection from Staph, MRSA, C-Diff, Listeria, Salmonella, Norovirus, Influenza, Common Cold, Mold, VOC’s, Negative Odors and many more harmful pathogens.
