What’s different about Gateway?

For starters, patients receive a pre-visit estimate on their expected costs. “We don’t want patients to be surprised by their health care costs,” says Jenn Cox,

“We have patients that don’t feel well and don’t want to sit in a waiting room,” says Samantha Rausch, Family Nurse Practitioner at Gateway. “They can literally 6 / GEIST MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2019 / atGeist.com

check-in online, wait for their text alert and come straight back to be seen.” Imaging services such as X-rays, MRIs, CT scans and ultrasounds are all in-house as well with 3D mammograms and bone density testing coming next spring. Another game-changer is their fully staffed lab which has the same blood and chemistry testing equipment as the mother ship, Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield. They can accommodate just about every lab test in a short amount of time for less costs. In the event a specialty test is required, Gateway merely sends it to Greenfield, but the patient still only receives one bill from Gateway.

Main Street

Behind the scenes, Gateway is not only high-tech and efficient but practical as well. A long hallway that stretches from the immediate care through the lab to imaging is nicknamed “Main Street” by Gateway staff.

Aynslee Johnson is a lab tech assistant working in Gateway’s in-house lab, able to turn tests around quickly and at a lower cost.

“Once a patient comes into the immediate care, we can take them down for some lab work, get an x-ray or cast their broken bone all behind the scenes so they never have to sit around in a waiting room,” Rausch adds. Hancock Health Family

Perhaps the biggest asset that Gateway brings to the health care space is its people. Talking with Rausch, it was one of the main reasons she came to Gateway. A Ball State Nursing School graduate with a Masters Degree from the University of Indianapolis, Rausch lives near Gateway and was excited when she heard of Hancock Health’s plans to create something different close to home. “I started out as a patient taking my child to Hancock Health in Greenfield,” she says. “I always found the people to be so personable and caring. Now, I get to work here and experience it firsthand. We get so much encouragement and support from Jenn (Cox) and our CEO Steve Long, it’s unlike anything I’ve experienced in health care.” Certainly, Gateway Hancock is pioneering a new retail health care movement, catering to the needs of the community with cutting edge technology and lower cost.

NEW MEXICAN RESTAURANT OPENS IN GEIST Writer & Photographer / Pat Carlini

A new Mexican restaurant is now open in the Geist area at the site of the former Wooden Bear Brewing spot. It is called El Lago, which means “the lake.” Owner Alfredo Melendez thought it was an appropriate name for the new Mexican spot near Geist Reservoir.

“Its been going great,” Melendez says. “We have been busy just about every night and we really like it here.” Even though the area doesn’t have a direct view of the water, El Lago’s patio has a wellshaded area with big red umbrellas and comfortable outdoor seating. atGeist.com / NOVEMBER 2019 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 9

EL Lago offers a variety of margaritas, including its signature homemade El Lago margarita with homemade tequila blanco, agave nectar, orange curacao and its secret recipe mix, all served on the rocks. There’s also its “Sangriarita” which is a blend of house margarita and sangria and the “Margarita Skinny,” which is silver tequila

with agave nectar, fresh-squeezed lime, and soda water, served on the rocks and in a variety of sizes. In addition to its signature margaritas, the restaurant also offers its signature tableside guacamole, which is a blend of freshly sliced avocados, cilantro, jalapenos, and house spices. El Lago has several types of salads, including the “El Lago salad,” which is topped with steak, chicken, and shrimp. There’s also “create your own combo” meals where guests can mix and match enchiladas, tamales, burritos and tacos to make your own dish. Desserts are just as authentic at El Lago, with selections including “Flan”, a Mexican dessert made fresh in their kitchen daily and “Sopapillas,” which is a classic dessert of fried flour tortillas drizzled with honey, butter and cinnamon. For specialty drinks, they serve “horchata” – a Mexican drink made with rice and is flavored with sugar and cinnamon. EL Lago is open MondayThursday 11 a.m. – 10 p.m. On Friday and Saturday, it’s until 10:30 p.m., while on Sunday it’s open from 11-9 p.m. You can view the menu or find out more by visiting them at ellagomexicancuisine.com or give them a call at 317-2889760. Owner James Plenty

GREEN DISTRICT New Chopped Salads & Wraps Eatery Celebrates Grand Opening In Fishers

Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Ellie Sophia Photography

Green District Salads, a Louisville-based chopped salad and wrap eatery, has come to town with edgy slogans and a cast of athletically fit characters with vegetable heads. Among its marketing logos are a tomato-topped sprinter and a prize fighter sporting a head of broccoli. They promise “The best GD salad in town” and suggest “Eat your GD salad.” For James and Nicole Plenty, owners of the Green District Salad location at 8350 East 96th Street, what’s most compelling is that the salads and wraps the restaurant serves up to the Fishers community are delicious and filling yet healthy. Before opening the restaurant, James, who has a doctorate in education, served as the Conducting Fellow and Education Specialist for the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir. Nicole is an Obstetrics/Gynecology MD specializing in Fetal Medicine. Together they had the idea of opening a business that would contribute to the Fishers community, so James began researching options. “We were interested in starting a business that would be fulfilling to both of us,” he says. “I looked at a lot of franchises and nothing made sense. Nicole wanted to do something with salads. I was researching online when I saw Green District Salads. I loved what I saw. “I visited both of the locations in Louisville. I tasted the food, talked with the owners and ended up loving the brand. The concept is healthy salads but any of our salads can be made into a wrap. Or people can customize anything and build their own.” Each of the 11 signature salads offered has a catchy name and fresh ingredients that include vegetables, fruits and lean proteins. The salads and wraps are priced at $9.99, but the build-your-own option starts at $6.99. One option is the “Romaine Calm” which includes chicken, Parmesan cheese, bacon, red onion and red pepper.

Another example is the combination of quinoa, beets, shredded carrots, grilled asparagus and chickpeas that are among the ingredients of the “You Are What You Beet.” “The response so far has been great,” Plenty says. “We are beginning to have repeat customers that come back one or two times a week to have their favorite salad. Our top sellers have been Tequila Mocking Bird made of shrimp, corn, feta cheese, black beans, peppers and onion and Thai One On which is chicken or shrimp, chow mein noodles, cabbage, carrots, edamame and peanuts.” Green District Salads also has a catering menu. Six of its most popular salads are available in bulk quantities. Prices range from $40 to $70 and feeds up to 12 people. Wrap trays start at $32 for four servings. Two varieties of pasta salad made to serve eight are available at a cost of $12. “We looked for a location in Fishers that was affordable and fit the footprint of the restaurant,” Plenty adds. “I came across the space where the Which Wich Sandwiches shop had moved from. It had easy access and was the perfect place. We are so glad to contribute a healthy option of a fast-casual eatery to the community.” Visit Green District Salads at 8350 East 96th Street in Fishers. You can give them a call at 317-288-7402 or visit them online at GDSalads.com for more information. NOVEMBER 2019

BETHLEHEM UNITED METHODIST CHURCH CELEBRATES 175TH BIRTHDAY Writer / Matt Keating Photography provided

Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Fishers recently celebrated its 175th birthday. The church was founded by pioneers in 1844. “It’s very exciting to be part of a house of worship that has lasted this long,” says Pat Johnston, administrative board chair. “Our congregation is the oldest continuing worship community in Hamilton County housed in a frame. The church was built in 1851 and added on to, and refreshed over the years, but it’s the oldest religious building still in use.” Johnston loves the church. “My husband Dave and I were drawn here from the church where we raised our kids,

a mega United Methodist congregation, where we were active for 40 years or so when we moved to the lake on retirement,” Johnston says. “We had passed the pretty little building and admired it while visiting our grandkids in the area and wondered what it was like inside. We were hooked on our first visit!” There are several things that stand out to Pat about the history of the church. “Well, we started in the Crook family’s log barn at 136th and Prairie Baptist Rd as a ‘class’ of the United Brethren church,” Johnston says. “Over several mergers between denominations, we (later) ultimately became a United Methodist Church. Our second building was a log church just a bit south of where we are now located, but that was quickly replaced in 1851 by the frame church with a NOVEMBER 2019

cemetery at the current location. In 1912, we expanded by moving the building forward several feet, digging a basement, and hauling the building onto its new foundation (using horses).” The church’s founding families (with the last names Crook, Patterson, Steffy, Cahil, Carverick, Wertz, Allen, Kinnaman, and Wyant) still have descendants in Hamilton County, and Wyant descendants still worship there. “Our historic cemetery (we recently had an open house, talk, and tour there) includes several Civil War vets, and even from right around the time of the Revolutionary War,” Johnston says. “It’s amazing to think that we are still using the walnut pews made from huge logs donated from a founding member’s farm. And to think, we were here long before an interstate, Avalon and

Saxony, and the Hamilton Southeastern Schools, and Hamilton Town Center joined us in our corner of the world!” Bethlehem United Methodist Church has members from Fishers, Geist, and Lawrence Township. “Our missions over the years have included raising money for a number of local charities,” Johnston says. “For several years we ran an after-school homework help program in a nearby lower-income apartment complex. We support Man 4 Man Ministries, The Good Samaritan Network, The Indiana UM Children’s Home in Lebanon, UMCOR (The United Methodist Committee on Relief), Damar, The Boys and Girls Club Noblesville, and The Thorpe Creek School Library. We’ve also sent supplies to tornado victims, generators to a mission in Central America, and more. Quarterly, we provide lunch at Ronald McDonald House at Riley for families of patients there.” Bethlehem United Methodist Church raises that charity money primarily by having participated in what is now Fishers Spark (started as Fishers Fest), since it began over 10 years ago. “We are the source for the ‘heavenly corndogs,’ there, and most of the congregation serves shifts cooking dogs and selling soft drinks,” Johnston says. “And of course, we have generous congregants, too.” Johnston noted that every church has its ebb and flow of congregational size.

“As children grow and move away from the area, we lose some, so the average age of a congregation tends to rise and fall, (and then rise and fall again) over 175 years,” Johnston says. “While there can be some comfort in being all ‘of an age,’ we know that won’t keep us going. In recent years, we’ve worked on not becoming only a congregation of retirees. “We’ve drawn in younger members, and there are really probably two reasons for that,” Johnston says. “The first is that we have a young, energetic pastor, the Rev. Angela Gafford-Asmus, who keeps us open to new ideas and gives a little shove now and then to move outside the box. The second is that we are well known for being among the friendliest congregations around. We are small enough to recognize a visitor, and almost all of us enjoy welcoming those,

urging them to come back. And most do!” Because they are not a megachurch, (and don’t want to be), members can keep things personal. “We have dinners together, either pitch-ins at the church or ‘on the road,’ at an area restaurant, nearly every month of the year,” Johnston says. “Our youth group is small right now, but we keep our kids busy. For example, as part of one of the 175th birthday events, they will participate in giving out 175 free Bibles to all comers on a Saturday afternoon before taking off for a hike and a picnic at Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park.” Bethlehem United Methodist Church is located at 13550 Olio Road. World War II Veteran’s Memory Lives On Through His Son Writer / Kara Kavensky Photography Provided

Veteran’s Day, or Armistice Day as it was originally named, was declared to honor the 11th hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918, the end of World War I. Veteran’s Day is a day of gratitude and remembrance of those who have served our country. This Veteran’s Day and every day for that matter, Fishers resident David M. Delafield honors his father, David D. Delafield, who served during World War II. David D. Delafield was born in 1920 and grew up in East Aurora, New York just outside of Buffalo. While away studying

art at Miami of Ohio, his father plunged the family car into a lake. This suicidal episode was mainly due to the impact the Great Depression had upon his jewelry business. He not only drowned himself but his younger daughter and granddaughter. Delafield’s mother and older sister survived. Delafield’s older brother, Will, like himself, was away at the time. Delafield left college to help his family get through this rough time before he transferred to Ohio State University to earn his Bachelors of Fine Art. In 1939, a professor of Delafield’s at Ohio State, Hoyt Sherman, creatively engaged in the war effort by helping the U.S. Navy identify enemy ships and planes through NOVEMBER 2019

drawing classes. Unbeknownst to Delafield, his classes at OSU with Sherman prepared him to be a bombardier on a B-24 Liberator. In January of 1942, Delafield enlisted in the US Army Air Corps. In August of 1943, he was a member of the 727th Squadron of the 451st Bomb Group. The 727th was stationed in Tunisia. Delafield’s new B24H Bomber had a nickname borrowed from Snuffy Smith, the “Bodacious Critter.” Delafield was a crew member of the Bodacious Critter II, as the original Bodacious Critter was shot down by the Germans in late June 1944. Delafield designed and painted the nose art on the plane. The job of the bombardier

is to accurately target the aerial bombs to their destination. The visual techniques that Delafield learned at OSU enabled him to be one of the most successful at his craft. The Bodacious Critter completed 51 missions over Germany, France, Italy, Bulgaria and Yugoslavia. The 52nd mission was thwarted by a crash immediately after take-off. After serving in the war, Delafield returned stateside to complete his degree. His war experiences impacted his priorities and created artwork to reflect the awareness of poverty that he had encountered in Europe. Delafield not only earned his BFA at OSU but also an MA and a PhD. He taught at Washington State University for three years, then he spent most of his career at the University of Northern Iowa. It was in Cedar Falls, Iowa where he met and fell in love with a student named Marianna. Marianna had returned to school at UNI to earn her teaching certificate. A single mom with three young children, Delafield not only married Marianne but adopted her three children. The youngest is David M. Delafield. “It was this act of love and generosity that endeared me to my dad,” David M says. “My dad already had four kids of his own and it was amazing how well the seven of us kids blended.” David M. and his adopted father bonded NOVEMBER 2019

over many things, not the least of which was baseball. They were both Cincinnati Reds fans and David M played baseball through high school, and today is an athletic clothing rep for baseball apparel. Delafield would pass in December of 2003 after battling a decade of Alzheimer’s-related illnesses. While his life was cut short, Delafield leaves behind a body of work that continues to be celebrated. However, the most enduring legacy of Delafield’s is the love that he had for his family. Delafield was many things: a son, an artist, a husband, a father, a grandfather and a hero to all.

FISHERS POLICE DEPARTMENT IMPROVES CRIMEWATCH APP Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided

The Fishers Police Department recently announced its new and improved Fishers CrimeWatch app – Relay, a community engagement and crime prevention app. The app, which has served residents since 2016, is used to report non-emergency crimes. Relay is free to download via the Apple and Google Play stores.

Fishers Police Chief Ed Gebhart says the The officer can connect back with the Relay app is designed to improve citizen and citizens to ask any questions about the officer safety. report and to let the citizens know when their report has been resolved.” “If you see a suspicious vehicle, erratic driving, have an animal concern or The Relay app improves communications. anything that seems out of place, you can It now includes a streamlined user interface take a picture and submit it through the and improved feedback and updates to app,” Gebhart says. “A nearby officer will residents who submit issues. receive your report immediately, and then they will self-dispatch themselves to solve “Our app is unique because it gives citizens the incident in the most timely manner. a direct way to connect with nearby law NOVEMBER 2019

enforcement,” Gebhart adds. “If citizens give permission, officers can message them to ask any relevant questions and to send updates on when the incident is resolved. Citizens can now receive alerts from local law enforcement to highlight trends in the area so they can feel safer wherever life takes them. The Relay app is available to citizens across the country and will route incidents to the appropriate agencies. The software is integrated with existing police dispatch systems to make it easier for officers to view and respond to reports while in their patrol vehicle.” The Relay app is also easy to use. “When you launch the app, a map pops up and it will show you any incidents that have been submitted near you,” Gebhart says. “So even if you are not planning on submitting incidents, the app is still extremely useful for citizens to stay in-theknow on what is going on in the area that they are in at any given time.” More than 6,000 Fishers residents use the app to report non-emergency crimes to the Fishers Police Department. “Our number one goal is to serve and protect our community, which we believe this does,” Gebhart says. “The app allows citizens to not only submit nonemergency incidents directly to nearby law enforcement, but it also allows citizens to see what type of reports are submitted and where. On top of that, the app has a feature so citizens can receive realtime alerts from local law enforcement. Officers can push notifications to alert their community of threats in their area, locations to avoid from accidents and much more.”

to navigate through. They like being able to self-dispatch themselves so they can solve any incident in the most efficient manner. On top of all of this, officers enjoy having the ability to connect back with the citizens to ask any relevant questions about the incident and to send them updates on the report so they can close the loop with the citizens.”

“By giving citizens the opportunity to take a picture of an incident and directly send it to nearby law enforcement, Relay truly is the future of keeping communities safe,” Gebhart says. “Relay is unique because it allows citizens with communication and accessibility issues to more easily report incidents. It is the only app on the market that has this innovative software.”

Fishers residents have also enjoyed using the app and bridging the connection with local law enforcement.

For more information, follow the Fishers Police Department on Twitter, Facebook and Nextdoor.

Fishers police officers have responded positively to it. “Our officers really enjoy using it,” Gebhart says. “They like it for a variety of reasons. First, they love how citizens can send them a picture of the incident reported to allow them to better prepare for the situation at hand. Second, they like using the app because it is so simple NOVEMBER 2019

The new northside location offers a design unlike other Pizza King locations.

Austin Prather, assistant director of marketing for Pizza King, knows Geist and Fishers residents are excited about the opening of the newest location.

“This location is one of the most modern and unique store designs in our entire company,” Prather says. “We wanted to give the community a dining room as beautiful as the community itself. The store features exposed ductwork, black ceilings and an attached patio for outdoor dining. We also wanted to commemorate how we’ve grown through the years by displaying custom artwork about our history and brand throughout the store.”

The new restaurant officially opened in October. “Our new location is located at 11228 Fall Creek Road, Indianapolis, right next to the 3 Sails Sculpture and Roundabout,” Prather says. “Our ownership group is made up of several families that own and operate 48 Pizza King locations across East Central Indiana. We have locations in cities such as Muncie, Noblesville, Anderson, Richmond and Fort Wayne. There are other Pizza King chains on the western half of the state that aren’t associated with our stores.

Prather adds that there has been a lot of community excitement about the new Pizza King. “We have been blown away by the overwhelmingly positive public response to the news of this new store,” he says. “We’ve NOVEMBER 2019

had numerous residents leave us messages about how they got hooked on Pizza King during their time at Ball State University in Muncie. Many of these graduates have moved to this area now, and they are ecstatic to have a pizza brand they love within such close proximity. We are looking forward to becoming an active member of this community through sponsorships and other forms of community outreach as well.” The menu at the new Pizza King will feature well-known pizzas and other delicious options. “We are best known for our ‘Feast’ specialty pizzas,” Prather says. “Our traditional pizzas come with a thin, crispy crust. We also have a thicker, pan crust option as well. For those that want something other than pizza, we have plenty of other menu options to choose from. We have a wide variety of

submarines, pastas, breadsticks, wrap-ups and salads. Our dill butter brushed ‘bread stix’ are also a fan favorite.” Some of the Pizza King customer favorites will include their Royal Feast pizza, which has been the most popular menu item for decades. “It features a special blend of pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, onions and red and green peppers atop a crispy crust,” Prather says. “Customers also love our bread stix, which come lightly brushed with dill butter and are served with nacho cheese or your choice of sauce.”

Prather has his own favorites. “I love everything on the menu, but the Royal Feast continues to be my go-to pizza,” he says. Highest Quality Products Prather adds that, “Over the last 60 years, our overarching goal has been to serve the highest quality products with fast, friendly service. Every time a customer decides to ‘Ring the King,’ we want to ensure that they are happy with the food and service they receive. This continues to be our goal as we grow and expand over time.”

Prather and the Pizza King staff are thrilled about being in the Geist and Fishers area. “We just want the community to know how excited we are to be opening a location here,” Prather says. “We want to make sure every customer is taken care of and satisfied when they order from us. With that being said, we have comment cards at pizzaking. com and every table at our store. We encourage everyone to fill one out and let us know if we are meeting their expectations.” Pizza King is located at 11228 Fall Creek Road. SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY EVENT RETURNS NOVEMBER 30 Writer / Samantha Kupiainen Photographer / Brian Brosmer

For the sixth year in a row, Fishers will celebrate its version of Small Business Saturday with Shop Fishers. The local celebration is an all-day event on Saturday, November 30. Local shops and restaurants from around the city will have some of their biggest sales of the year, just in time for the holiday shopping season.

“It is our local celebration of Small Business Saturday, which is a nationwide initiative by American Express to celebrate and support small businesses across the country,” says Stephanie Perry, assistant director of public relations for the City of Fishers. “Fishers started its own celebration in 2014 right when it launched, and it’s really grown over the past six years with new businesses coming on board. It used to be more centrally located just around the downtown district, the Nickel Plate District, but we really worked to expand NOVEMBER 2019

it to be city-wide.” Perry is especially proud of how many businesses from across Fishers participated in Shop Fishers. It has had shops participate from Olio Road to the east and Allisonville to the west, embracing all aspects of the city. “It’s a great way to kick off the holiday shopping season here in Fishers and show support for our local small businesses,” Perry adds.

Shop Fishers will be an all-day celebration but will vary depending on the hours of participating businesses. Shops and their hours will be available to the public once the lineup has been secured.

WE’RE REALLY PROUD OF ALL OF OUR SMALL BUSINESSES HERE IN FISHERS “We’re really proud of all of our small businesses here in Fishers,” Perry says. “Everything from locally-owned restaurants and boutiques, to fitness studios. We have such a variety of businesses here across the city, and so we’re really lucky to have such a mix, especially here in the downtown area of small businesses and larger corporations. It’s a great blend for the city and for our residences.” Compared to last year, there are a few changes to Shop Fishers in 2019. Last year, there was a winter farmers market that started in November and went through March. This year, there will just be a holiday market. “The market might have a little different feel than in the past,” Perry says. In addition to the market, there will also be a handful of new businesses in the downtown area thanks to the addition of Spark Apartments. Some of those businesses include Blush Salon and Roman & Leo. Angela Castelli, owner of Roman & Leo,

Angela Castelli of Roman & Leo will be open in the Spark Apartment building selling her one-of-a-kind boys apparel and gifts.

has been participating in Shop Fishers since its first year in Fishers. “I have participated in it every single year,” Castelli says. “I think 2014 was the first year they did it, and that was the first year that I did it. Someone from the city had reached out and said they were going to be promoting the Shop Fishers and doing a big event. That year is the first year that I opened my store and I wanted to participate and do something with Small Business Saturday. It was awesome that the city was already going to be doing some sort of event that day to help support all the local businesses.” For Castelli, she loves small businesses and Small Business Saturday because of its community feel and how a lot of people in the community come out and support local businesses, some who’ve never shopped local before. Overall, it brings a lot of great exposure to the community and highlights new businesses in the community. I just think shopping small and local, you get more of a personalized experience,” Castelli says. “A lot of the owners physically work in their businesses. There’s a lot of time and effort spent on what they put into their stores, how the shopping experience is for the customers, that personal experience is really important. And you can really see all of the effort that the business owners put in.”

LIVING HISTORY INDIAN CREEK ELEMENTARY TEACHER IS A MEMBER OF LES TROUPE DE LEVIS RE-ENACTMENT GROUP Writer / Samantha Kupiainen Photographer / Michael Durr

During the week, Steve Hardwick is a fifthgrade teacher at Indian Creek Elementary School in Lawrence Township. On weekends and in the summer, the educator and veteran is immersed in the living history community — the French and Indian War time period to be exact — through his involvement with the re-enactment group, Les Troupe de Levis. Les Troupe de Levis is a re-enactment group of about 50 people from all walks of life. Members portray the French in North America during the Seven Years War, otherwise known as the French and Indian War. Member’s clothing is as historically accurate as possible, based on countless hours of research. The troupe accurately portrays everything from war re-enactment to making period-correct meals and using period-correct tools.

Hardwick has found his place in the group because of his passion for veterans and history. “Some people go out and golf. Some people are out playing softball or are out running the mini-marathons,” Hardwick says. “Well, this is what I do.”

Hooked On Friendship Hardwick first became acquainted with the troupe during Valley Forge Day, an annual event at Indian Creek where students dress up in period clothing for a day and learn what it was like to live in the Pennsylvania town during the 1700s. To make Valley Forge Day more of an immersive experience for students, Hardwick sought out re-enactors. The father of one of his students was part of the re-enactment group, Les Troupe de Levis. As the years went on and the troupe kept coming back for Valley Forge Day, its atGeist.com / NOVEMBER 2019 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 37

members started asking Hardwick when he’d join them in re-enacting. The turning point for Hardwick was when he learned “they had their own cook section and they make great meals anytime they re-enact. “That’s all I needed to hear,” he says. From then on, Hardwick was committed to the troupe. “I was hooked,” he says. “What hooked me more than anything was the friendship with these people and troupe and how they’re willing to teach you, how family oriented they are.”

Across the Country Part of living history is visiting history. Hardwick says he travels and puts on his period-correct clothing about four or five

times per year. The farthest he’s been is Fort Niagara, located in New York, which was a significant location of the French and Indian War. His troupe also performs at Fort Ouiatenon, in Lafayette, Indiana. The group is invited on behalf of the Tippecanoe Historical Society, where Les Troupe de Levis roleplay a French settlement for its Feast of the Hunters’ Moon. As much as Hardwick enjoys getting to see historical sights, what he enjoys most about the troupe is its overarching theme of family. “I truly believe I could leave my wallet out around these people and it would not disappear,” he says. “It’s amazing.” Hardwick also says that, like a family, the troupe likes to make sure they can all experience some things together. For instance, most of its members have been to Fort Ticonderoga, in New York. All five people from his main group went again this past summer because of him. They want him to experience those prominent places associated with the French and Indian War — Fort Ticonderoga being one of them. The troupe doesn’t meet regularly. Rather, they’ll meet at Triton Brewery in Lawrence occasionally to catch up and map out their next living history event.

Dressing the Part Even though stores in 2019 don’t have a 1700s clothing section, Hardwick is still able to dress the part. He gets most of his period-correct clothes from people who are phasing out of the events or from others who have extra pieces they no longer use. “We’re always trying to find ways for each other to improve characters,” Hardwick says. “In Fort Ouiatenon, I bought a vest because I wanted to improve my outfit. I’m always trying to improve myself so I don’t look the same year after year.”

military man. He prefers that character over others because “it’s a cheap uniform and it’s always cool.” He has been asked to move up and portray a French Marine, but to date has passed over that “promotion.” “I like playing a common person,” Hardwick says. “The people that settled in Indiana were common folks. I like trying to represent that kind of person. I don’t want to be someone famous. That’s how I can truly feel who those people were.”

For the Love of Veterans

“If some people are getting out of the business or hobby, they want to give you a good deal – they barter,” he says.

Hardwick enlisted in the Army when he graduated high school in 1982. He was stationed in Germany for two and a half years, during which time he was a company clerk. After leaving the Army in 1985 to pursue a degree in education at Indiana State University, he joined ROTC, the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps.

When Hardwick re-enacts, he often portrays a French Milice, a common

“I wanted a little extra spending money and didn’t want to work at McDonald’s,”

Hardwick says that he often relies on others in the group to know what to get. In true 1700s fashion, he often will do trades to get some of his pieces.

Hardwick says. “I worked in the MI (military intelligence) field and the logistics field. I was a platoon leader and company commander.” Hardwick says that he was in the Indiana National Guard during the first Gulf War, but his unit was never activated. “They say you can take the person out of the military, but you can’t take the military out of the person,” Hardwick says. “It was very cut and dry, but I loved it. I miss the camaraderie. I enjoy being around troops.” Hardwick also attributes his interest in veterans and military life to the bicentennial and watching a lot of old-time movies as a kid. “I was in the sixth grade during the bicentennial of our country,” he says. “I remember so much the celebrations going on about the founding of our country. I just somehow started to become very patriotic.” His patriotism carries over to his involvement with Les Troupe de Levis. He enjoys getting to teach people about history because of how much can be learned from it, as well as getting to interact with other veterans. “It really, somehow, ingrained in me to appreciate what they did for our country,” he says.

MUD CREEK CONSERVANCY SEEKS TO SAVE SARGENT ROAD LAND FOR NEW PARK Writer / Lynda Thies Photography Provided

For more than a month, commuters and residents have driven past a large sign at the corner of 82nd and Sargent Road with the message “Sargent Road Nature Park You Can Help sargentroadnaturepark. com.” Many have read about the project on Next Door, Facebook and a good number of you have visited the website. Perhaps you are curious about what it all means, who is involved and why we need a park in the first place? While the Geist community has grown exponentially since 1994 and builders have purchased and developed just about every piece of property, a group of dedicated neighbors formed an organization known as the Mud Creek Conservancy (MCC), a 501(3)C, non-profit land trust to work collaboratively with the community to

preserve not only the aesthetic beauty but the ecological services and wildlife habitat of Mud Creek Valley. Over the course of the past 25 years, the group has 35 acres of environmentally sensitive or vulnerable habitats protected through conservation easements along Mud Creek between Fall Creek Road and 96th Street. But the easements are all located on private property.

to purchase the land. That is where the community comes into play.

Mud Creek Valley is an approximately eight-square mile area bound by I-69, Fall Creek and 96th Street. The area is home to 13,000 residents and zero Public Parks. The Mud Creek Valley, according to the MCC, “is a key component to one of Indianapolis’ largest remaining and connected natural habitats. Anchored A long stretch of wooded property along by Ft. Harrison State Park and the Fall Mud Creek on Sargent Road has been a much-needed respite for drivers commuting Creek Greenway to the south, Mud Creek extends north along Sargent Road, home from work and school. The park-like providing many rare and unique habitat setting is actually a 25-acre parcel of land types. The importance of the Mud Creek that boasts an impressive plant and animal Valley is underestimated. It provides a diversity which is reliant on the natural haven for plant and wildlife diversity and habitat. Protecting the property has been a cleaner air and water to a city stressed by goal of the MCC for a long time. So after a decade of failed attempts to sell the property urban sprawl. Residents and visitors alike are taken aback by the unique topography, located at 82nd and Sargent Road, the extensive natural areas and scenic beauty property owners met with the MCC and, of the valley.” per their agreement, they have two years 40 / GEIST MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2019 / atGeist.com

So, when the property owners decided to consider allowing the MCC to purchase the land, Benjamin Miller, President of the MCC and a Geist resident, recognized the opportunity to offer both greenspace and provide an opportunity to educate residents on the importance of protecting this unique environment. Like many residents that choose to live in Geist, it is often for the area’s aesthetic beauty, and the beautiful greenspace, but Miller quickly learned that while the area was green and there was space, there was not an acre of greenspace. “This is an exciting opportunity to preserve a truly beautiful piece of North East Indy made up of 25 acres of meadows, young and mature forests and wetlands along Mud Creek,” he says. “In agreement with the landowner, MCC has two years to rally the community to raise the funds to purchase this property. This will forever preserve its beauty and ecological importance and will help fill a public need. The creation of a nature park at this site will provide a much needed public greenspace and allow current and future generations to appreciate and enjoy Indy’s natural areas while preserving it forever.” Lifelong Mud Creek Valley resident Earl Simon has been a part of the MCC for decades. Simon has helped the organization secure the 35 acres through conservation easements along Mud Creek between Fall Creek Road and 96th Street. Simon, having lived in the area for 40 years, acknowledged that the areas have undergone tremendous changes and is thrilled with the opportunity to help residents see firsthand the importance of the park.

QUALITY ASSETS.

Over $1 billion in assets under management for clients.

“The few large natural areas that remain are under greater threat of development each year and must be protected,” he says. The vision for the new Sargent Road Nature Park is well defined and Miller’s passion is evident.

LOOKING FOR AFFORDABLE DENTAL CARE FROM PEOPLE YOU CAN TRUST?

“Once the property has been purchased, there will be very little disruption to the site, with the crushed rock trail, minimal signage, improvements such as parking, trails and benches will focus on low-impact yet effective design and, most importantly, the land will be maintained as it is in nature,” Miller says. “When you walk the property, it makes you feel like it is actually bigger than it is because you come across a young forest, an old forest that has been there for thousands of years, or a meadow, migratory birds and monarch butterflies. So it is a really awesome opportunity for environmental education in an outdoor classroom. Preserving the aesthetic beauty of Geist by protecting it and educating people on the importance of protecting the environment is our goal.” To make this project a reality, the group invites individuals and businesses to consider making a taxdeductible investment to the project.

“Our goal is to create a valuable asset to the community and for those businesses and individuals that invest in the park, and there will be significant on-going recognition,” Miller says. There are many different levels of participation available for individuals or businesses. All donation levels will receive permanent park signage at the entry to the park so that one-time investment will provide recognition forever. This is a unique opportunity to leave an impact and a legacy for a lifetime. CORTONA’S ITALIAN CUISINE & WINE BAR CELEBRATES ONE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY Writer / Josh Brown Photography Provided

This December, Cortona’s Italian Cuisine & Wine Bar is officially celebrating its oneyear anniversary. The Fortville restaurant has grown in popularity over its first year, bringing a truly authentic experience for patrons. Owners Simone and Beth Lucarini couldn’t be happier with the response in their first year.

“In these past 12 months we have done a lot,” Simone says. “We are very happy with the support we’ve gotten from those around Fortville, McCordsville, Geist and even the north side of Indianapolis.”

offered many wine dinners that have been a big hit. The special events have provided an elegant atmosphere— perfect for a date night. These unique dinner events will continue to be offered in 2020.

“It’s really exciting to be celebrating our first year,” Beth adds. “That community support means so much. We’ve even had people come all the way from Avon and Greenwood. They’ve come from all over to see what we are all about. The people of Fortville have been fantastic as well.” Throughout its first year, Cortona’s has

“I was born and raised in Tuscany,” Simone says. “I learned from my mother in the kitchen, what to cook, how to cook, and I wanted to bring that here. I like welcoming people here to our restaurant and making our customers happy with these events and our food. People have loved these wine pairings.”

As the New Year draws closer, Simone says Cortona’s will continue to be innovative and bring even more for its customers. He has toyed with the idea of also opening a pasta shop where customers could buy pasta but also have unique dinners where they learn to cook authentic Italian dishes, too. Cortona’s has offered unique Tuscan dishes such as the Polenta with Ragu and Gorgonzola, the Bruschetta al Pomodoro, and the Veal Scaloppine Prune Cream Sauce, to name a few. The menu will continue to grow in 2020 with more seasonal offerings and authentic options for guests to enjoy. “We will have a new pasta machine soon that will allow us to sell pasta to our customers,” he says. “We will be able to offer some cooking classes, too. I can’t wait to do that. Our antipasti options will change. We will also continue to offer our woodfired pizzas. We will always continue to be authentic. You’ve got to come and check us out and experience it for yourself. The dishes I offer here are a part of my culture.” Cortona’s Italian Cuisine & Wine Bar is located at 209 S Main St. in Fortville.
