on helping someone,” says Jeffry Young, president.

As one of more than 600 National Exchange Clubs across the country, which include more than 1,600 members, the Exchange Club of Lawrence recently celebrated its 52nd year of service to central Indiana. The club, which is one of 20 in the state of Indiana, strives to fulfill is mission every day - to help make our communities better. “Everything we try to do is focused solely

One such project, which is focused nationwide, is a program for children who have suffered abuse. The club works year round to raise funds to help battle child abuse of all types, from physical and sexual to emotional. The group also raises money for Kids’ Voice, a program that represents boys and girls during litigation.

More than 500 American flags are stored year round and are brought out for the national holidays honoring the military - current, retired and deceased. Recently the clubs around central Indiana wanted to honor the 13 lives that were lost in Afghanistan. They posted 13 flags in different sites throughout Lawrence and Hancock County, including churches, Veterans of Foreign Wars lodges, libraries and American Legion locations. The club works along with a group called Veterans Matter, which is a national nonprofit based out of Toledo, Ohio, that raises money for homeless veterans. In

“The Field is to honor our first responders, current military and our veterans, and then this year we opened it to honor those who went to work during the pandemic,” Young says. “We know we’re not a perfect country, but this is a good country and we want to continue to improve on how we do things and honor those who serve.”

“Our Bank has been such a partner. It gives me a sense of calm during tremendous uncertainty.”

Another mission of the Lawrence club hits closer to home for Young, a veteran. Young is passionate about Americanism, and honoring the men and women who serve the country, not only as enlisted soldiers and sailors, but also as first responders. Anyone driving by the Field of Honor around the Fourth of July will likely be in awe of the 500 American flags posted in the ground.

the last five years, Lawrence and the other Exchange Clubs across Indiana have raised enough money to house more than 450 homeless Hoosier veterans. The clubs raise the money over a multitude of different events to pay for a veteran’s security deposit on a lease. Once a veteran has been released from the hospital, they find a job through the Veterans Administration (VA), and then they find a place to live. Unfortunately, most locations require security deposits prior to moving in, which can be hard for a homeless veteran to obtain. “That’s where we come in,” Young says. “The VA here in Indianapolis will call in to the headquarters in Toledo to secure the funds needed.” These projects, and so many more, are the lifeblood of Young and his comrades at the Exchange Club. Fundraisers are all aimed for specific needs and nonprofit groups, from homeless veterans to homeless gradeschool students and children in abused homes. “Our whole mission is to make our community a better place to live,” Young says. “Our club started in 1970 at Fort Ben, and some of our leaders were World War II heroes. They were from Lawrence, they lived in Lawrence and they wanted to make their home better, so they started the Exchange Club to make it happen.” As with most groups these days, the Exchange Club seems to always be working toward a fundraising goal here and there, and also a recruitment goal. “In this day and age, it’s very difficult to get people to commit to a club,” Young says. “It doesn’t take a lot of dedication, financially or time-wise, to volunteer and to work with us. We get a lot of volunteers for our Field of Honor, and we are always so grateful to them for their time. It’s become a family endeavor, to come together to place the flags and then to respectfully remove and store them.” For more information on the Exchange Club of Lawrence, visit facebook.com/ ExchangeClubof LawrenceIndiana. 10 / GEIST MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2021 / TownePost.com

HELPING THOSE IN NEED LOCAL WOMAN ORGANIZES AID FOR HURRICANE IDA VICTIMS Writer / Renee Larr Photography Provided

Hurricane Ida hit the state of Louisiana with a vengeance. With winds raging at 150 miles per hour at landfall, the hurricane displaced families across the state. One local woman has family ties in Barataria, Louisiana. “My aunt and uncle live in Barataria,” says Terri Gegenheimer, a Fishers resident. “The town flooded because the bridge broke into pieces. Their house then caught on fire. The fire department was flooded and couldn’t help, so my aunt and uncle watched their house burn down.” Her uncle built the home with his own two hands. “There was nothing they could do but just cry,” Gegenheimer says. “They lost family photos and memories of loved ones they can’t get back. The fire went from their house to another six houses. It’s just

heartbreaking.” Gegenheimer wanted to help, but struggled figuring out how to get essential goods like clothing, toiletries and cleaning supplies to her family. She sought out her online friends on Facebook for help. “I’m in a neighborhood Facebook page, and I just posted on the page explaining what happened,” Gegenheimer says. “I just put the need out there, and the response was overwhelming. I thought we’d get a few things we could just ship down there.” Instead, Gegenheimer received truckloads of donations.

Lydia Conley helped Gegenheimer pack and organize items. “Originally, it was just going to be a few boxes that Terri was going to send down to her family,” Conley says. “It quickly grew into a garage full of items. It’s unfortunate because sewage pipes have burst in some of these homes. These people literally have nothing.” Gegenheimer is a self-described introvert and has spoken to more people regarding this project than she has in a very long time.

“Talking to so many people and organizing all this is very far out of my comfort zone,” Gegenheimer says. “These past couple “My friends Lydia and Lisa helped me of years have been rough on everybody. because it was a huge undertaking,” Honestly, this project has restored my faith Gegenheimer says. “A neighbor was going in humanity. These women who donated down to Louisiana for work and volunteered really came out in full force. Many of them don’t know my family or me. It’s been to take a truckload himself. We still have refreshing to my soul to see that people more items to get down there.” really are good, and they do care.” NOVEMBER 2021

Is Your

Health Insurance Premium Making You Nauseous?

Gegenheimer is working with a local organization called the Flexware Foundation to ensure the second truckload gets to Louisiana. “We received grant money from Flexware Foundation,” Gegenheimer says. “Along with the cash donations from neighbors, we have the funds to rent a truck with a driver to pick up the items at my house and drive them to St. Anthony Church in Lafitte, Louisiana. Mutual Aid Disaster Relief will facilitate the distribution of the donations from there. We also received a wish list from a local teacher, for families in need. We’ll be working to get those items as well.” Gegenheimer hopes to keep sending donations in the future.

The Greater Lawrence Chamber of Commerce (GLC) exists to further the interests of local businesses and organizations while supporting the community. Originally tied to the City of Lawrence, it has expanded as Lawrence Township has grown. Its members are located throughout the northeast corner of Marion County and Indianapolis, which includes not only traditional Lawrence, but also the areas of Binford, Castleton, Geist and Oaklandon. Members enjoy the perks of belonging to the GLC in an area that is continuing to expand and thrive. They find making contacts becomes much easier with increased opportunities for interaction. Membership also enhances credibility. Since February of 2020, the GLC has been enthusiastically led by President Brad Klopfenstein. “Businesses or organizations benefit by joining the chamber,” he says. “It gives members the chance to network and be exposed to potential clients and customers. Belonging shows employees that their employer cares about the community. The chamber supports various festivals and many organizations such as the Lawrence Advisory Council on Disabilities. The chamber also attends mayor’s meetings, council meetings and city committee meetings. We stay up to date on issues affecting the community and we are a conduit of information to our members. Plus, we are here to help members negotiate the bureaucracy of government.” The GLC offers five levels of membership and corresponding benefits. Nonprofit organizations receive 20% off the price of any tier. Membership begins at $275 for the Copper level, and includes base amenities. These include job postings, coupons and press releases on the GLC website, as well as a ribbon-cutting ceremony and host duties for an after-hours business mixer. TownePost.com / NOVEMBER 2021 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 23 GreaterLawrenceChamber.org | 23

Each level adds increasing support. The midpoint membership stage is $1,600 for Silver, and this is the level where brand exposure kicks in. Logo placement and the opportunity to create a mini web page on the GLC website are some of the perks. The highest level is Platinum, for $5,500. At this point advertising is increased, and tables of eight are reserved for important city occasions such as State of the City and State of the School addresses. The organization is structured in a way that promotes and advances both its members and the community. It is led and governed by a volunteer board of directors who serve two-year terms. Day-to-day operations are executed by a professional staff of Klopfenstein and Rebecca McVay, marketing and events coordinator. A dedicated group serves as ambassadors, and works to recruit and maintain members. “What is so great about the Greater Lawrence community is the diversity of people that you don’t find anywhere else in Indiana,” Klopfenstein says. “We have such a broad range from the whole City of Lawrence, Castleton, north Shadeland and Binford. There is still a bit of military presence and the hub has shifted to the revitalized historic Fort Harrison campus, where you can walk to restaurants and businesses. It’s even got a 1,700-acre Fort Harrison State Park. Klopfenstein says the organization has room to grow. “Our goal is to give our members a feeling of belonging and a sense of place, with a leg up on everything Lawrence has to offer - and it’s got a lot,” he says. The Greater Lawrence Chamber is located at 6501 Sunnyside Road in Indianapolis. For more info, call 317-541-9876, email info@greaterlawrencechamber.org, or visit greaterlawrencechamber.org.

CREAM OF THE CROP MSD of Lawrence Township Makes a Massive Investment in Schools Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided

In January of 2014, when Dr. Shawn A. Smith became superintendent of schools for the Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township, he saw a hole in the district with regard to facilities planning and long-term maintenance. Therefore, he spearheaded the Blue Ribbon Facilities Plan, the district’s multiyear initiative to update, secure and plan for the future. “Every student and employee deserves a vibrant, safe environment that is conducive to learning and teaching,” Smith says. “Strong schools yield strong communities.”

Hill Elementary, Lawrence Central and Lawrence North softball stadium upgrades, Sunnyside Elementary, and Amy Beverland Elementary. In 2020 district leaders broke ground on a new transportation facility, scheduled for completion in late 2021. They also started full renovations at Lawrence Central, Lawrence North, Brook Park Elementary, Forest Glen Elementary, Oaklandon Elementary, Winding Ridge Elementary, and the four Early Learning Centers. The Early Learning Centers and elementary schools will be completed this fall.

“We have some buildings built in the 1960s and others in the 1990s, so the needs across buildings are vastly different,” says Dr. Between 2015 and 2020, more than $174 million have been invested Dana Altemeyer, director of communications. “One thing that’s in capital improvement projects. That is outside of 2019’s $191 consistent across the board is our commitment to safety, so we put million capital referendum, used to renovate the two high schools and enhanced safety and security measures in place in all buildings, four remaining elementary schools, make aesthetic upgrades to the including the reconfiguration of entryways to make them more Early Learning Centers, and update playground equipment. secure.” To date, the district has completed Crestview Elementary, McKenzie Center for Innovation and Technology, Lawrence Central and Lawrence North stadiums and auditoriums, Mary Castle Elementary, Belzer Middle School’s concessions area and track, Skiles Test Elementary, Indian Creek Elementary, Harrison

Some of the security upgrades include bullet-resistant glass, keyless door access, new video systems and new cameras. The district leaders also implemented a buzz-in system for all visitors to the building, created separate bus and parent traffic, and zoned buildings for limited access.

“I think sometimes there may be a misconception that the school just added a fancy facade onto the building, but there is so much more to it than that,” Altemeyer says.

“These spaces allow the students to better receive services such as physical therapy, occupational therapy and needed medical support,” Altemeyer says.

Contemporary learning spaces are different than they were back in the 1960s, starting with bandwidth capacity in a 1:1 learning environment where students in all grade levels have devices. As for flexible learning spaces, elementary schools have now all been equipped with large maker-space labs, which are multi-purpose rooms that promote hands-on learning in areas such as design, 3D printing, audio-visual, hand tools and programming. New spaces for exceptional learners meet the cognitive and physical needs of students with more profound disabilities.

Over time the scope of the project has continued to grow. Currently, there are 11 different construction projects happening simultaneously. Other projects have tackled inequities among facilities. For instance, Lawrence Central’s decades-old pool, lovingly referred to as a hot tub, needed to go. Lawrence North’s pool, built in 2012, had some structural issues. “When we think about growing the aquatics program as well as equity in the offerings between our two schools, the community

felt strongly that we needed to have two competitive aquatics facilities, and we were responsive to that by implementing a plan for a 50-meter pool at both buildings,” Altemeyer says. The high school renovations are taking place in phases. Work will not be finished until 2024, as school remains in operation during construction. Plans are underway for building a threestory academic wing onto the front of both Lawrence Central and Lawrence North. Once students can move, additional demolition and construction can take place. Capital projects planned for 2023 include Belzer Middle School and Fall Creek Valley Middle School, which will target specific needs at each building. Once those are complete, the district will start over with reassessing the needs of schools. “The district was in a place where some of the buildings had areas that had fallen into disrepair over time,” Altemeyer says. “Maintaining a cycle revisiting all facilities is far more cost effective.” While academics are at the forefront of everything that the school corporation does, curb appeal matters too, as strong schools protect property values. “People don’t want to send their children to dilapidated, outdated

facilities,” Altemeyer says. “We want students, families and community members to be proud of their schools.” Take Forest Glen, which two years ago had carpet on the walls. While the education was still of high quality, as evidenced by the year-round wait list, the building looked tired and dated. “When you step inside a fresh, revitalized, colorful space, it’s inviting and exciting,” Altemeyer says. Feedback from parents, students, faculty, staff and community members has been positive. “As a parent, employee and community resident, the renovations bring an additional layer of pride and excitement,” says Lawrence Central Principal Franklyn Bush. “The vision to ensure that Lawrence Township schools are the top of the line in every aspect is important for alumni, and current and future students.” “The community is proud to live and work in Lawrence Township,” adds Altemeyer, who notes that when they have dedication ceremonies, retired teachers and alumni often come back to see the renovated spaces. “There is a sense of pride as everyone feels the energy and vibrancy of a new facility.”

POISED FOR GROWTH

The Lawrence Township School Foundation is Making an Impact Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided

Sometimes the best advocate can be the one you don’t even know. Recently a customer was checking out at a local Walmart when they mentioned to the person scanning their items about EdEx. Short for Educators’ Exchange, EdEx is the Lawrence Township School Foundation’s (LTSF) free supply store that is stocked with office supplies, paper, books and craft items to use in classrooms. Staffed by volunteers and stocked with donations from the community, the purpose of EdEx is to supply teachers with free supplies that enrich the curriculum. It’s one of many programs that the foundation supports. The Walmart employee shared the information with her supervisor, who was impressed with the work the foundation was doing and called Board President Barb Austin to encourage her to apply for a grant. Ultimately the store awarded the LTSF a $500 grant, to purchase supplies from Walmart for donation to their teacher exchange. “That all came to be because someone in the community advocated for one of our programs,” Austin says. “We love to inspire that kind of action from the community.” This is why this year, the foundation’s message is, “The power of you.”

Established in 1983, the LTSF serves the Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township teachers and students. Every dollar raised is allocated to various programs to support the students and staff. “It’s a unique relationship between the foundation and the school district, as we work hand in hand to identify those programs that are of greatest value to both our students and our staff in terms of pushing achievement forward,” Austin says. The school district leaders indicate programs they need assistance with, and the foundation works closely with the superintendent and his administrative team in identifying those areas where the LTSF can make a meaningful impact. The programs are balanced across all 21 buildings to include programs for elementary, middle and high school students, as well as faculty and staff. “Where programs aren’t supported by tax dollars, that’s where we fill in,” says Taylor Williams, development associate. “Our foundation’s hard work allows for our school community to provide additional resources to our students that go beyond local, state and federal funding,” adds Superintendent Dr. Shawn Smith. “They support innovation for our district to be a ‘District of Destination.’ ”

The programs fall into one of four categories. These student-centric initiatives include Year 13 Prep; Hands-On Learning; Healthy Body, Healthy Mind; and Today and Tomorrow. This help may come in the form of grants that assist teachers in their classrooms. It may be actual scholarships. It may be a way to give students the chance to go on a legacy field trip. For instance, Creative Impact Grants give teachers the opportunity to apply for funding that supports creative and innovative projects. Last year one of the grants that was fully funded by the LTSF was submitted by Lawrence Central’s performing arts department. “It was a year of turmoil,” Austin says. “Students struggled with feelings of isolation as well as social emotional issues.”

Teachers recognized that student learning was being affected, and they needed an outlet for their pain, frustration and confusion. The performing arts department did a documentary that mainly followed show-choir students in the midst of preparations, as they grappled with the notion that despite the hours of rehearsals, they didn’t know whether they would be able to perform. “It’s a beautiful documentary that allowed students to speak their minds and share their struggles,” Austin says. “It not only provided an outlet for them, but it also shared great insight as to what was in their heads and on their hearts.” The foundation hosts three annual fundraising events, two of which are spring and fall golf outings. Funds raised go towards the

Bridge Fund, which ensures that all students can participate in all school aspects without limitations, such as academics, athletics, extracurricular activities and special projects. In addition, each spring they host an event at the Crane Bay Event Center, which celebrates the impact of their donors and community members. The school district’s tagline is, “Strong Schools, Strong Community.” It’s an adage they live by. “There’s a saying, ‘It takes a village,’” Austin says. “In this case, it takes a community, and we are fortunate that the community rallies around the foundation. We want our donors to understand the impact they’re making. It’s significant, and recognized by the school and the staff.” Lawrence Central alumnus Meghan Hughes says her schooling experience taught her much of what she still relies on now, nearly 40 years later. “I learned how be part of a diverse community, and how to learn from my fellow students, musicians and athletes, as well as my teachers,” Hughes says. “Lawrence Central allowed me to grow and aim high for what comes after high school graduation. I believe all students deserve that. I admire the LTSF mission, and I hope my modest gift contributes to the vision.”

Neal Gore, school community liaison for Harrison Hill Elementary, maintains that the LTSF has been an outstanding community support. “Thank you for all that you are doing to support our students and families,” Gore says of the LTSF. Still, the LTSF leaders would love to double or triple their capacity in order to spring forward. “We need to do more, and we are definitely positioned for growth,” says Austin, noting that it will take a combination of fundraising and community outreach to continue to grow. One group that’s stepping forward is alumni, who are eager to show their support. “We aren’t picky about how people want to get involved and assist,” Austin says. “Anyone who has a philanthropic approach can reach out.” The Lawrence Township School Foundation is located at 6501 Sunnyside Road in Indianapolis. SWEET SANCTUARY LOCAL RESIDENT BUILDS ITALIAN-STYLE HOME Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographers / Scotty Banks and Derek Kemp

“ The Tuscan-Mediterranean style is a radical departure from what everybody builds.” —John Turek, Springs of Cambridge homeowner

TownePost.com / NOVEMBER 2021 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 53

A

fter many trips to Italy as well as frequent visits to Scottsdale, Arizona, John Turek was inspired to build a Tuscan-Mediterranean home in McCordsville that encompasses architecture from both locales. He sketched the design for the 7,093-square-foot home on airplane napkins, and began erecting his dream home in 2005. “The Tuscan-Mediterranean style is a radical departure from what everybody builds,” Turek says. “This is a custom lot, so why build what’s basically a larger tract home? I thought, ‘I’m shooting the moon. I’m going to build something amazing and special.’ ” That he did. Turek, who started out as a draftsman when he was 14 years old, erected a five-bedroom, six-bath home in the Springs of Cambridge that boasts 12’ ceilings on the first floor and 9’ ceilings on the lower-level walkout. “The custom cabinets, as well as everything in this house, is oversized,” Turek says. There’s even a fountain inside the home, opposite the dining room, to create ambiance. The round dining room table, an 8’ slab of granite, is built on a custom base, and its shape was purposeful so as to not have any hierarchy to the table. Faux painting throughout the home creates a different theme in every room. Ornate chandeliers adorn the rooms, enhancing those unique themes. The house includes a radiant floor heating system inside the home, in the garages and on the driveways. Travertine flooring covers the first floor. The master bathroom has custom polished marble as well as a mosaic tile above the tub that recreates a famous painting of women pouring water into a basin. The home has stone molding details, 8’ iron front doors, textured ceilings, and 12” crown moldings, some of them gold. “There’s just a lot of detail everywhere,” says Turek, noting that the first floor has a northern Italian, almost Venetian feel that’s more formal, while the lower walkout, which features a recreation room, wet bar, home theater and gym, offers a Tuscan country vibe.

The home offers a great deal of outdoor living space including a boat dock with a limestone patio near the water. There is also a pergola with a wood-burning fireplace that matches the architecture of the house. Turek made sure to incorporate lots of natural stone on the floor and walls to provide a real feeling of connection with the earth. He named the house “Villa Del Santuario,” which means “House of Sanctuary.” “That’s the way that I view it because it’s so peaceful inside,” Turek says. “It’s very quiet. If there’s a storm outside, you feel safe and secure inside this home.”

to be involved with students and education. He attributes that to his mother.

Mosi Barnes knows what it’s like to be a student-athlete as well as a coach and educator. These are the experiences that have shaped him, and are a part of what he brings to the table in his new role as Lawrence Central High School’s athletic director.

“I just kind of was raised in that environment,” he says. “My mother is an educator. She spent 42 years in education. She worked as an English teacher for some years and also as an administrative assistant principal. She’s been a principal as well. She’s been a director on the educational level. I just was growing up in that kind of environment with my mother in education. It’s kind of instinctive for me, just being around her, being around her career and things of that nature.”

Barnes was born and raised in Indianapolis. He graduated on the honor roll from Cardinal Ritter High School. An allAmerican and Indianapolis Player of the Year, Barnes committed to play basketball at Purdue University under Gene Keady. After two years at Purdue, Barnes transferred to Eastern Michigan University, where he continued his playing career and graduated with a degree in sports medicine. Barnes says he’s always had an innate desire TownePost.com / NOVEMBER 2021 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 57

Barnes says some of the skills he learned from her prepared him to work in education. After graduating from college, Barnes put his sports medicine degree to work as an athletic trainer. A few years later he got a job with Indianapolis Public Schools as a

strength coach. In 2009 he became head boys basketball coach at Northwest High School, where the team finished runner-up in the city tournament during his tenure. In 2013 Barnes took on a dual role as both athletic director and head boys basketball coach at Howe High School, where his team won a city championship. From there he became assistant athletic director at Marion High School in 2018, and in 2019 he took the job of athletic director at Arsenal Technical High School. Now he has taken over as the new athletic director at Lawrence Central. “I’ve been a head coach,” Barnes says. “I had some success as a head coach and I’ve also had some success as an athletic director. I’m relatable to coaches and I work directly with coaches. I’m from Indianapolis, so I’m relatable to families and people in Indiana and things of that nature, and relatable to student-athletes because I’ve been one pretty much half of my life. I’ve done it on some level at the highest level.”

Barnes says the people in the Lawrence Central community are a big part of what convinced him to take the job. “I think Lawrence Central has a clear vision of the direction they’re going as a school community,” he says. “We have a lot of very capable, experienced people that work in this district and in this community.” The people, he says, are what he finds most exciting about his new role. “Whether that be just the people of 58 / GEIST MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2021 / TownePost.com

Lawrence in general and our kids at the elementary schools and middle schools and our high schools, our coaches here, our support team, our staff and all the parents really do a great job and put a lot of energy into this place,” he says. “I’m just really excited about being able to work with them. I want to develop positive relationships with families and students here in this community. I work tirelessly to help Lawrence Central be recognized as the best school in the state of Indiana. I really feel like this place doesn’t have a ceiling. This potential is unlimited.”

Owner Brady Foster

MADE FRESH

FOSTER’S CATERING IS DEVELOPING AN INDY PRESENCE Writer / Ryan Kennedy Photographer / Robby Berry

When COVID-19 restrictions forced Foster’s Catering to close only one week after opening, Owner Brady Foster took it hard. “It was probably one of the hardest things

in my life, buying a restaurant and it immediately closing,” he says. “It was a dream I’ve always had. I almost didn’t know how to take that.” Foster grew up in Gary, Indiana, and says he’s always worked in the culinary industry, working his way up from washing dishes to cooking. He worked in a fish market for a 60 / GEIST MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2021 / TownePost.com

long time as well. Foster moved to Indianapolis 15 years ago as a way to stay out of trouble. “I was trying to get away from some things, some dangerous stuff - trying to set up my life,” he says. He found a church, met his wife, and landed

a job in the food industry. Foster worked at Cici’s Pizza for 12 years, including 10 as general manager. Eventually he realized it was time to make a change. “I just got burnt out and wanted to do something different,” Foster says. “Somebody told me about Ivy Tech culinary school and I decided to make that leap. With my wife’s blessing, I quit a paying job to pursue that dream of cooking.” Foster says it’s one of the best decisions he’s ever made. He enrolled in the two-year program and excelled, winning a cooking competition and earning himself an invitation to Paris, France.

“Out of the 200 to 300 people that were in the program, only eight got selected,” he says. “When I got there they voted me top student out of the eight, and that was kind of the day when I thought, ‘I think I can do this.’ ” Upon graduation, Foster worked as a sous-chef at Circle City Soups. He was promoted to head chef, and worked in that position for a year and a half before deciding to take another step toward his dream of owning his own restaurant. He approached Circle City Soups Owners Cindy and Roger Hawkins with a business offer. “I love Ivy Tech and I love working in the

school and with the students, and decided to see if there was a possibility that they wanted to sell it,” he says. The Ivy Tech Circle City Soups location became Foster’s Catering in March of 2020. A week later, the pandemic hit. Between March and August, Foster wasn’t allowed into his own restaurant. Foster describes that period as heartwrenching. He credits his wife Stephanie, his four kids, and his faith with helping him through such a tough time in his life. When Foster was allowed to open his doors again last August, he got right to work doing what he does best - cooking food. “As an American, and as an AfricanAmerican, I want to provide food that black, white, Hispanic - anybody could enjoy,” he says. Foster says he uses what he learned at Ivy Tech as well as at fish market settings, barbecue eateries, and restaurants like Cici’s, Rally’s and McDonald’s. The food and sauces are made fresh from scratch. “I try to run it almost like a food truck,” Foster says, adding that the response so far has been overwhelmingly positive. Foster’s Catering does business both with students and with customers from outside of Ivy Tech. Foster says none of it would be possible without the help of his employees, Charlie and Felipe. Foster says his focus now is on providing people with good food, and making them happy. He wants people of all backgrounds to come in, taste something good and feel like they belong. “For years I felt like I didn’t belong,” he says. “And now I have my own place.” Foster’s Catering is located at 9301 East 59th Street in Indianapolis.
