THE GET WELL PLACE LEAFSPRING SCHOOL’S HEALTH CENTER CAN ACCOMMODATE YOUR CHILDREN DURING FLU SEASON The holiday season is a joyous time of the year. The beautifully decorated homes, families spending memorable time together and the coming of Santa Claus is absolutely my favorite time of year. With the change of season, however, also comes illnesses. And worst among them this time of year is the flu. Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a serious illness that can lead to hospitalization and even death. According to the Centers for Disease Control, this year it is estimated that five to 20 percent of the United States population will be affected by the flu. The flu attacks the lungs, nose and throat, and symptoms of the flu include fever, chills, muscle aches, cough, congestion, runny nose, headaches and fatigue. Young children, older adults, pregnant women and people with chronic disease or weak immune systems are at especially high risk and are highly encouraged to get the flu shot if they are able. According to the CDC, the 2017-2018 flu season was one of the worst on record. A total of more than 200,000 people were hospitalized due to symptoms related to the flu virus and between 3,000 and 49,000 people died. It is estimated that among those numbers were more than 180 children.
These numbers are frightening, but they can be prevented. The CDC estimates that 80 percent of those children who died last year were not vaccinated against the flu. The Center for Disease Control recommends that children ages 6 months and older get a flu vaccine every year. The vaccine needs to be administered as soon as it becomes available since it takes up to two weeks to reach full effectiveness. The vaccine can be given at doctor’s offices, walkin clinics and even most pharmacies, often at no cost to you. For specific concerns or questions, contact your physician. If illness strikes your household this flu season, remember that The Get Well place is here to help. You don’t have to be enrolled in LeafSpring School to use the Get Well Place. Any working parent with a mildly ill child can bring their child here for expert care in a comfortable, child-friendly environment – whether just for a few hours or for a full day. The Get Well Place is staffed with Pediatric Registered Nurses to take care of your little one when you aren’t able to. The Get Well Place is also architecturally separated from the rest of the school and can accommodate 8 / GEIST MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2018 / atGeist.com
various illnesses. After a quick assessment by our nurse, children are assigned to care rooms based on diagnoses or symptom profiles to avoid cross-contamination. There, they’re given age-appropriate activities based on our curriculum as their health is monitored throughout the day. Each child is pampered and given just the care they need to get them feeling better and back to normal in no time. Please call the Get Well Place at Geist if you want to set up a tour or if you have any questions. Ask us about our membership program, a great way to save money on fees. We look forward to serving you this flu season. As a working parent, when your child gets sick and you need to go to work, finding backup care can be stressful. The Get Well Place is a clinic at LeafSpring School staffed by a licensed nurse who will care for your child.

Local Artist Pamela Bliss spent more than a month completing the Reggie Miller mural.
Local Artist Pamela Bliss Talks Painting the Iconic, 60-foot Tall Reggie Miller Mural In Indy Writer / Josh Brown Photographer / Michael Durr
As Pamela Bliss walks by the now famous 60-foot tall mural of Indiana Pacers legend Reggie Miller she stops, like most people who pass by, and stares up at the work of art. Her admiration for the mural is a bit more personal than the average passerby. Bliss is the local artist who was tasked with painting the Reggie Miller mural. After more than a month of hard work, she completed the masterpiece in mid-October. Now, for those who see the intricate detail of the massive mural portraying Reggie lining up a three-pointer with his trademark jump shot, it might be hard to believe that Bliss didn’t even start painting until she was 30 years old. Her uncanny knack for art all started with a turkey. “My mother will tell you I started drawing when I was two years old,” Bliss says. “I painted a turkey at Thanksgiving, and she said it wasn’t the typical scribble that a child might make. You could really tell it was a turkey, and that was unusual for a two-year-old. For as long as I can remember, I always had a pencil and paper in my hands. I never considered it could be a career, though. But by the end of college, I knew I wanted to go into art. I’ve always paid great attention to details. “I had a teacher in high school that told me I couldn’t paint. She was an English teacher filling in as an art teacher that year. I always knew I could draw, but I never knew really if I could paint. I took a four-day workshop when I was 30 years old, and I realized that I could. I just needed to be shown how to mix paints.” Bliss grew up in New Castle and went to high school in Cambridge City, Indiana. Aside from moving and finishing her last two years at a high school in California, Bliss has been a lifelong Hoosier. She earned her undergraduate degree from IU’s east campus and her masters from IU Bloomington. She has been an Indianapolis resident since 2001.
Earlier last year, Bliss was approached by Ben Jafari — the owner of the office building at 127 E Michigan Street — about possibly painting a mural on the side of his building. Jafari, a lifelong Pacers fan, knew he wanted a Pacers legend to be painted. The decision for the mural to be Reggie Miller came quickly, but the process took much longer. Jafari and Bliss had plenty of hoops to jump through to get the mural approved, between approval from Miller himself for the use of his likeness, the city of Indianapolis to the Indiana Pacers and the NBA. Bliss worked on the mural many hours a day, often from early morning up until dark, for more than a month. She says the hardest part, aside from dealing with cold or rainy weather, is being up so high to paint the mural. “It’s the tallest mural I’ve ever done,” Bliss says. “I have a fear of heights actually. I just have to zone out. I always get butterflies in the beginning when I start. I use a lift to get up there and all of them are different. Some are jerky. After a few days, I realize I’m not going to die, and I can carry on and focus more on the painting. I start from the top down because paint drips. So I’m high up from the very beginning, which helps get the highest part over with.” This isn’t the Hoosier artist’s first rodeo with murals. Those walking along Mass Ave have marveled for years at the detailed mural of one of Indy’s most famous authors, Kurt Vonnegut. Hoosiers have Bliss to thank for that masterpiece as well. Bliss has also painted the jazz musicians that can be seen along Indiana Avenue. She has even worked with the Pacers in painting a Hall of Fame mural, which resides in Bankers Life Fieldhouse. But her most recent mural might be her favorite of all. “I’ve been wanting to paint Reggie for years,” Bliss says. “He deserves it. I’m just honored to have been selected to do it. This isn’t just a mural of Reggie Miller. It also depicts a moment in time when Hoosier hysteria was at its height with the Pacers. This mural ranks No. 1 for me. Part of the reason I wanted to move to Indianapolis back in 2001 was to paint large murals around the city.” The responses from the community, as you can imagine, have been overwhelmingly positive for Bliss. Indy residents, tourists visiting the city and more have flocked to stop by and see the mural, and they never leave without first taking a selfie. The response has been so positive, Jafari says they may soon add a selfie station on the corner for guests that stop by. The building owner couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. “Only Reggie could fill this space,” Jafari says. “I always see people stopping to take pictures. It has really been great for the community of Indianapolis. I’m just honored to have the 12 / GEIST MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2018 / atGeist.com
mural on our building and grateful to Pamela for creating this amazing piece of art.” Perhaps the highest praise for Bliss came from Miller himself. After seeing images online of the finished mural, the Pacers legend took the time to reach out to Bliss and congratulate her. “He called me one day and said, ‘This is fantastic. I can’t wait to come back and see it in person and give you a huge hug,’” Bliss says. “That was really amazing. Most people are critical about pictures of themselves, much less a painted portrait. I was surprised, honestly, when Reggie even gave the approval for me to do it. I’m very happy that he is happy with it.”
Holiday Gift Card Special
As for the future, Bliss isn’t sure what will be next. She says she would love to paint other legendary Indiana sports figures like Peyton Manning or Tamika Catchings, among other nonsports figures. For now, she is happy to have her most recent masterpiece completed. Either way, she’s sure to have a paintbrush in her hand for whatever project comes next. The Reggie Miller Mural is located downtown at 127 E Michigan St. For more information on Bliss or to view more of her artwork, visit pamelabliss.gallery.

Tom K. Stevens, a director of the Fortville Lions Club, says he has thoroughly enjoyed his 40 years with the organization and is looking forward to many more years of helping his community. He noted that the club has a long and rich history, filled with great memories and strong friendships. “The Fortville Lions Club was chartered in August 1925, 93 years ago,” Stevens says. “Lion Club International was founded in 1917. Today, the Fortville Lions club meets at 6:30 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays at the Fortville Community Building. with added anticipation. “I also like working at Camp Woodsmoke. This is a 264-acre camp near Greensburg, Indiana, which offers special opportunities to campers with special needs. The Fortville Lions club supports this camp financially and also maintains the chapel on clean-up day.” Stevens noted that the community for the Fortville Lions Club is both local and worldwide. “We support Lions International,” Stevens says. “We support the state projects, which include Cancer Control, Eye and Tissue Bank, Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Leader Dog, Speech and Hearing and the Indiana Lions Foundation.” Locally, the Fortville Club has partnered with Seals Ambulance Service and the Fortville Police Department to implement the “File of Life” project for the elderly and handicapped. “This is a magnetized plastic holder for important information which hangs on the refrigerator,” Stevens says. “Rescue workers are trained to look for this file (during an emergency). We have also supplied defibrillators to Fortville Police patrol cars. We help out with food distribution when Gleaners Mobile Food Distribution come to the area, too.” The Fortville Lions Club also collects eyeglasses which are sorted and distributed to people in need in developing countries. They also help the needy with funds so they might obtain eyeglasses. “We also work with the Mt. Vernon School nurse to do vision screenings for their students,” Stevens says. “Annually, we collect and provide toys, games and books for the local ‘Toys for Tots.’” If anyone would like to be a member of the Fortville Lions Club, contact Tom Stevens at stevenstk@aol.com, or contact Lee Guthrie, the club secretary, at lguthrie@ mysinestar.net. 16 / GEIST MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2018 / atGeist.com

Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness, his wife Aunna and children Hudson and Lincoln get an early visit from Santa.
Writer / Josh Brown . Photographer / Brian Brosmer
e’s made his list, and he’s checked it twice. Santa Claus is coming to Hamilton County. For 40 years, Larry Shaw has donned the red suit, bringing cheer to children all around Indianapolis. For Shaw — joyfully known around Indy as the Circle City Santa — it all began in 1978. That year, his daughter’s school — St. MichaelSt. Gabriel Catholic Elementary School — was in need of a Santa to come visit the kids. Shaw, whose family was a part of the church, was pretty well known around the community and got asked to put on the red suit. He and his wife Karen happily agreed.
“As a Santa, you feel like Superman or something. All these kids adore you and come up to you, grabbing your legs and yelling, ‘Santa, Santa!’ Who wouldn’t want to be Santa Claus? The kids are fun.”
“At that time you didn’t necessarily look for the guy with the beard, you looked for the big guy, which I wasn’t really at the time,” Shaw says. “I’m still not that big compared to most Santas. My wife and I went as Mr. and Mrs. Claus, though. She absolutely loved it and convinced me to go to other classes in the school.” That first year sparked a passion in the Shaws to continue bringing joy to people each Christmas season as Mr. and Mrs. Claus. From there, they branched out to other local schools and nursing homes. It wasn’t long after that before friends and coworkers began asking the Shaws to stop by for home visits with their families. Shaw, who retired from the United States Postal Service in 2011 after 35 years as a mail carrier, really began pursuing the Santa role professionally around 10 years ago as he neared retirement. Today, 90 percent of the events and neighborhood appearances he does are in the Geist, Fishers, Carmel and Noblesville communities. This year, he has plenty of appearances lined up, especially in Geist and Hamilton County neighborhoods. Shaw is also a part of Fishers’ jolliest event of the year — Winter Wonderland. He will be on hand at that event Dec. 1. He will also be available for photos with Santa Dec. 4-5 at The Pavilion in Fishers. Shaw always enjoys his visits to the northside. However, living closer to the Indianapolis Airport, he says, the biggest challenge is the drive up. It’s not quite the North Pole, but it is a trek. And, yes, even Santa has to deal with the traffic. atGeist.com / DECEMBER 2018 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 19
- Larry Shaw -
“I wish I could take my sleigh out and use it all year long,” Shaw laughs. “Like I tell the kids, I have to get a special permit. The only time I can fly my sleigh is on Christmas Eve. My car is the Santa Patrol Car and has a great, big bow on it that I show the children. I always let them know that it belongs to the elves and they let me borrow it or they drive me around when I can’t use my sleigh.” The gig never gets old for Shaw, who enjoys the new memories made each year. “As a Santa, you feel like Superman or something,” Shaw says. “All these kids adore you and come up to you, grabbing your legs and yelling, ‘Santa, Santa!’ Who wouldn’t want to be Santa Claus? The kids are fun.” Shaw’s very first outfit all those years ago consisted of a Kmart suit and strap-on beard. He’s come a long way since then. Today, he dons a professional suit and a convincing beard, not too mention the time spent in preparing for the role. Shaw has attended Professional Santa Claus School in Colorado to hone his skills. He also founded the Hoosier Santas group in 2011. The group is made up of more than 300 members, including around 150 Santas. They meet once a month somewhere in Indiana, sharing stories and creating friendships. In the offseason, Shaw created the “Inside the North Pole Rehearsal.” The best Santas, Shaw says, make sure to practice at it and stay on their feet. “It is a rehearsal for the holiday season,” Shaw says. “We will all get together and pull from a jar some questions that you might get from the kids. You have to stay in character for two hours as we go around the room, rolling a dice to see who goes next. It helps Santas build their backstories, too. If you are Santa, you have to know what he eats for breakfast, what he likes to do and incorporate some things from your life to make it authentic.” Shaw came from a humble family, but, as you can imagine, he grew up just as excited as the next kid when Christmas rolled around. His parents always made sure the house was fully decorated each season. Those Christmas memories are a part of his story today. “My mom and dad loved Christmas, and we really had great Christmases,” Shaw recalls. “That’s probably why I love it so much today. We had one shed in our backyard that was completely dedicated to Christmas stuff. They always got us involved with decorating the tree. I always made my list and wrote to Santa what I wanted each year.” 20 / GEIST MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2018 / atGeist.com
Shaw has plenty of stories over the years talking with kids. He’s had children ask him just about every question imaginable, never once breaking character. He’s also visited homeless shelters as Santa, going out of his way in some cases to make sure those children get gifts. As for what kids ask for most often, Shaw says it has changed in recent years. “These days, the kids don’t ask for toys really anymore,” he says. “It’s cellphones. They all want a phone. ‘Give me a phone,’ they say. I always tell them, ‘Well, I can get you a phone. The elves know how to make cellphones, but your mom and dad will have to pay for the phone bill. Santa can’t pay for that.’”

As the holiday season rolls around, like you, Shaw has his favorite Christmas movies. He does enjoy Tim Allen’s “The Santa Clause” if he’s going for comedy, but his all-time favorite Christmas movie is “Miracle on 34th Street.” Shaw recently turned 69 years old. The long-time Santa doesn’t see himself ditching his sled and reindeer anytime soon, though. “I always said, when this becomes a job, I’m quitting,” Shaw says. “That has never been the case. The kids’ eyes still light up when they see Santa. Sometimes, when I’m not even in costume, I might go to eat and hear kids at another table whisper, ‘Look, there’s Santa!’ It’s great. I can see myself laying out in a coffin in my Santa suit when it’s all said and done.” For more information on Circle City Santa, visit circlecitysanta.com. Check with your local neighborhood HOA to find out if Shaw or another Santa is making an appearance soon. Fishers families looking to get photos with Circle City Santa on Dec. 4 or 5 at The Pavilion can visit playfishers. com/218/Winter-Wonderland to reserve a time slot.

Co-owners Bert Cook and Gray Tweedy.
BUILT TO LAST FISHERS DO-IT CENTER REMAINS CUSTOMER-FOCUSED & COMMUNITY DRIVEN 30 YEARS LATER Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger Photography provided by Josh Brown & Fishers Do-It Center
You’re knee-deep in the middle of a home improvement project and you run out of nails. Driving 10 or 15 minutes to the nearest big box hardware store probably doesn’t sound too appealing. Thank goodness for your neighborhood Fishers Do-it Center. Since 1989, Bert Cook, Gray Tweedy and their staff have been helping Fishers neighbors with do-it-yourself projects of all types and sizes. In the beginning, just Bert and Jack Tweedy, were holding down the fort. Jack’s son, Gray, left his banking job and joined the fun just a few months later.
Bert and Jack were connected via Do it Best. Jack was the owner of the family lumber yard business in Knightstown and Carthage, looking to open a hardware store. Bert was hoping to pursue his dream of opening his own hardware store. Do it Best was looking for the perfect opportunity to open a prototype store in Fishers. When the Do it Best District Manager connected the two, Tweedy and Cook turned Fishers Do-it Center into an amazing partnership for each other and Fishers. The pair met for breakfast and forged the deal that marked the start of a perfect partnership that lasted all the way until just prior to Jack’s passing. “We agreed to it with a handshake, as you would with family,” says Cook, co-owner of Fishers Do-it Center. atGeist.com / DECEMBER 2018 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 23
When Tweedy and Cook opened the store, Fishers’ population was just under 6,000. Just as Fishers grew, the Do-it Center grew with it. “Sunblest had just been started. We watched it grow around us,” Cook says. “Most of the growth started in the western part of Fishers, and we were ushering in growth to the eastern part of Fishers. It really blossomed, and now Fishers has more than 90 thousand residents.” After almost 30 years, Fishers Do-it Center is still doing business with the same philosophy. “We’re here to help people solve problems,” Cook says. “We want to give you the best service we can give and treat you like we’d want to be treated.”
Tweedy’s sister, Kim Young, is also a coowner of the store and has been a crucial part of the team since the beginning. “Her involvement has grown as has her family,” Tweedy says. “As the kids have gotten older, her involvement has become full time, and she is equally as instrumental in our success and philosophy.”

That philosophy includes personalized customer service, which has always been Fishers Do-it Center’s drill to fastening a loyal customer base. “Retail trends change every day and every week. We’ve learned to adapt,” Cook says. “Big chain stores all sell the same stuff. People can get it anywhere. But we’ve adapted to the competition by giving the same great service, offering great products at a fair price.”

To the staff at Fishers Do-it Center, great customer service doesn’t mean just being friendly and efficient. The real foundation, Cook says, is in the relationships. “We’re just local people helping out our friends and neighbors,” he says. “We get to know these people. We talk about their projects. Sure, the same people come back to us because they like us. But, mostly, they ask our advice because we’ve been in their same spot. We’ve done the projects they’re doing and lived through those challenges.” Tweedy adds, “Helping our neighbors is my favorite part of being here. Getting to know them, building relationships and problem-solving for their projects is what we do.”
Cook loves helping people so much, he travels to Nicaragua every year on a mission helping people improve their houses, schools and more. “I want to help them any way I can,” he says. Problem-solving and relationship building starts with great staff, many of whom have been with Bert and Gray since the beginning. “They’re great people, like Lindy Miller who runs the paint department, among other things. She’s done a lot of painting jobs, so she knows what our customers need,” Cook says. Lindy was the second person to come on board back in 1989 and has been a constant source of expertise since. “She’s pretty much the renaissance woman, the queen of paint, plumbing, electrical and more,” Tweedy adds. Experts just like Lindy manage the garden center, which will be buzzing soon. Bob and Nancy Curry joined the crew nearly three years ago, and they’re making great things happen for your yard. “Nancy selects all the right plants, going out of her way to pick just the right thing,” Cook says. “If the plant isn’t large enough, pretty enough or has spots on it, she’ll send it back. Her care and attention to detail have made a big impact on our business.” As if the best staff, friendliest service and the best selection weren’t enough, they’ve got a rental center for weekend warrior projects like tilling or pressure washing. The Fishers Do-it Center also has a repair room where you can bring items in for small repairs like a screen door. “We’ve also fixed windows and built a table for someone’s garage,” Cook says. Stop in today to the Fishers Do-it Center at 11881 Lakeside Dr., Fishers, for help on your next project. You can visit them online at fishersdoit.com.
NEW MOTORSPORTS MEGASTORE DRAWING INTEREST ACROSS INDY
Bill Starkey’s love for motorsports was kindled early - very early. By the age of 13, the Indianapolis native and Ben Davis High School grad already had a job at Dreyer Motorsports removing motors for the inhouse techs to work on.
Small wonder, then, that Starkey decided to launch his own powersport megastore in March of 2017. Flat Out Motorsports offers motorcycles, watercraft, dirt bikes, ATVs and more, and the location of his establishment, off of I-69 and previously occupied by General Motors, is one of several factors he feels contributes to the store’s success so far.
Starkey’s foray into the motorsport industry began in the mid-1990s when he opened a 400-square-foot shop buying and selling motorcycle parts. A few years later, he graduated to selling used motorcycles and, by 2007, was operating an east-side Suzuki dealership, a Yamaha and Polaris dealership in Martinsville and a Yamaha store in Greenwood.
“I was always fixing my own dirt bikes as a kid and buying my own parts with money that I earned from detasseling corn and a paper route,” Starkey recalls. “By my senior year in high school I was doing full engine builds and diagnostic work. Motorcycles, dirt bikes, motocross — I loved all that stuff as a kid and did races through my early 20s. I just love the industry.”
“Our market is one-third of one percent of the population, so I knew I needed to build in the right place at the right time with the right products,” says Starkey, whose wife Amy also works at Flat Out. “That’s what brought me to the I-69 corridor. I think having a large selection helps in this industry too, because brand popularity changes a lot and you have to evolve with that.”
After the economic downturn of 2008-2009, Starkey decided it was time to close several of his smaller establishments and build out a megastore in an optimal location that would allow him to modify his selection of products according to ever-changing consumer preferences.

26 / GEIST MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2018 / atGeist.com
“I knew that to have a chance in this
business you have to have a large selection and good exposure to internet traffic and interstate traffic,” he says. Keeping his Martinsville location, Starkey embarked on a complete floor-to-ceiling renovation in the latter half of 2016 following the purchase of his northside facility. Flat Out’s expansive showroom now houses Polaris, Indian, Slingshot, CanAm, Yamaha and Sea-Doo products among others, and Starkey has doubled his staff since opening to meet increasing sales and service demand. “Our growth is 100 percent this year, and, again, I think that’s due to the right location, products and people,” says Starkey, who has also operated an online sister auto parts company for the last 12 years. “The powersports industry is not actually in very good shape, but things have been going well for us because we can adapt our inventory to a business that’s consistently changing every day,” he adds. “Indian and Slingshot have been big sellers, and in this market near Geist and Morse, Sea-Doo does great.” Starkey works full-time for the Indianapolis Fire Department at Station 44 - a position he’s held for 22 years since completing a four-year stint in the Army after high school. He says the job helps to balance the stress of operating within the motorsports industry — an industry he says will likely be as unrecognizable in 10 to 15 years as it was when he was a youngster. “Ten years from now, honestly I don’t know how many motorcycles we’ll be selling — millennials aren’t buying them,” he says, adding that Flat Out Motorsports sponsors several fundraisers each year including the Indianapolis Miracle Ride supporting Riley Hospital. “We’ll have to continue to mold our product line based on what the consumer wants. You just have to adapt and overcome.” Flat Out Motorsports is located at 7525 East 88th Place in Indianapolis. For more information, call 317-890-9110 and visit flatoutmotorcycles.com.

Central Indiana Orangetheory Owners: Carolyn and Shaun McDonald (Carmel, Fishers-Geist, West Carmel-Zionsville and the future Fishers-Nickel Plate), Katie Douglas (Greenwood and Downtown Indy), Lyle Feigenbaum (Avon) and Jennifer Haas (Ironworks and the future Broad Ripple).

Looking for a total body workout that adheres to your schedule, offers guidance not guesswork and helps you continue your path to progress long after the workout is over? Then Orangetheory Fitness may be the perfect fitness solution for you. “We have classes scheduled throughout the day with nationally certified coaches who monitor your progress and make sure you are not over or under training,” says Carolyn McDonald, owner of Orangetheory studios in Carmel, FishersGeist and West Carmel-Zionsville. The newest studio, Fishers-Nickel Plate, is set to open in January 2019 directly across from Fishers City Hall. Shortly after, a Broad Ripple/Butler area studio will open at the intersection of Kessler and College in Indianapolis. Developed by former Pilates instructor, Ellen Latham, Orangetheory is a sciencebased workout that gets results. It is centered on the principle of EPOC (excess post-exercise oxygen consumption) that suggests if one challenges their body at the correct intensity, they will experience an effect that keeps them burning calories even after the workout is over.
“If you spend 12 or more minutes of the hour-long workout in the ‘Orange Zone,’ which is at 84 percent or more of your maximum heart rate, you will experience the afterburn,” says Katie Douglas, owner of Orangetheory studios in Greenwood and downtown Indianapolis. “You don’t have to work out every day because your body will be burning calories even as it recovers.” With 1,000 locations throughout the US (and seven here in Central Indiana), Orangetheory is designed for all fitness levels and they boast a diverse community of clients with a variety of fitness goals. Staff members and coaches take the time to get to know each member, build a rapport and assure them that they will get the maximum benefit from the Orangetheory workout. McDonald says each member wears a heart rate monitor that tracks their progress in real time throughout the class and gives them (and their coach) insight into their performance. Orangetheory takes the guesswork out of your fitness regimen and creates a reciprocal relationship between you, your coach and other Orangetheory members. Plus, the workout changes every day and that variety keeps members engaged. “The level of community created in each studio is one of my favorite aspects about the Orangetheory program,” McDonald 28 / GEIST MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2018 / atGeist.com
says. “The coaches work hard to ensure that every member is comfortable and they are wonderful about offering modifications as needed to ensure everyone feels successful in their workout.” Everyone on staff is trained to offer a welcoming, energetic environment and each location offers a robust schedule of between 60-70 hours of training each week, so Orangetheory is ready whenever you are. “Members schedule classes during the times most convenient for them either in person or with our app,” Douglas says. “In addition, because all Orangetheory memberships are reciprocal, members are welcome to take classes at any studio in the country.” McDonald believes Orangetheory is the future of fitness and she is proud to be part of it. “We have grown so quickly over the past four years here in Central Indiana and our members are constantly building on this incredible TEAM OTF community and culture,” she says. “For local residents, your first class is free, so why not come by and see what we are all about?”

For the last 15 years, Lawrence Baking Company, 8143 Pendleton Pike, Indianapolis, has been making a wide range of outstanding treats for its loyal and hungry customers. Co-Owner Chris Smith loves baking and serving her delicious donuts, pastries, pies and cookies to long-time guests who have become good friends. “Lawrence has a community feel to it,” Smith says. “It’s much like home to me. I come from Smith Valley in Greenwood. We get a lot of customers from both Geist and Fishers, because I see more traffic on Carroll
Road and Olio Road coming down the Pike to get on I-465 (to come see us).” Smith and her son, Jason East, opened Lawrence Baking Company in November of 2003. “We started as a wholesaler with delivery service,” Smith says. “We then opened the retail shop on Pendleton Pike with coffee.”
we have been in a larger unit, but out of sight from the street, so we haven’t been doing as well with that. Our wholesale business is still good.” Smith noted that Lawrence Baking Company’s wholesale profits are about 95 percent of their business now.
Smith has previous baking experience. She worked at Klosterman’s Bakery on Guion Road. Jason worked at Firestone in Noblesville.
“People thought we went out of business when we moved across the parking lot,” Smith says. “We are now in the shopping strip, maybe 500 feet from our old location, in the Old China Buffet unit, in Esquire Shopping Plaza.”
“The first nine years of being open, we were located closer to the street (Pendleton Pike), and we did very well with the retail business,” Smith says. “For the last six years,
Lawrence Baking Company features a diverse selection of donuts, including cake, yeast, filled, frosted, iced and glazed. Many businesses, churches and schools order

donuts to be delivered. The delivery service is $3. “We also have a lot of Danish pastries, including turnovers, snails, bear claws, alligators, cream cheese rolls, orange rolls, croissants, Napoleons and cream puffs,” Smith adds. Cookie fans can indulge with Lawrence Baking Company’s tasty cookies, including roll outs, cut outs, drip, iced and tea cookies. “We like to tell people that they can start their parties or gatherings on a sweet note by serving guests with tasty treats,” Smith says. Other delicious items include muffins, such as banana nut, blueberry, cranberry orange, white chocolate chip raspberry, upside down pumpkin pie, bran, chocolate cream cheese, lemon blueberry, corn muffins, Jalapeño corn (on request) and different fruit breads. Pies include pumpkin, pecan, peach, apple, cherry, lemon-lime, key lime, coconut cream, sugar cream, banana cream and blueberry. “We also have five kinds of bagels to choose from including plain, whole wheat, cinnamon raisin, blueberry and cream cheese, with butter as toppings,” Smith says. The best selling items at Lawrence Baking Company are the apple fritters. “I think men are more drawn to them,” Smith says. “Sugar cream pies are also a favorite.” Smith’s own personal favorite treat is the cinnamon cake donut. Smith noted that her loyal customers have kept Lawrence Baking Company in business for the last 15 years. “Our Geist, Lawrence and Indianapolis customers have been good to us over the years, with both wholesale and retail,” Smith says. “We’ve made good friends along the way.” Lawrence Baking Company is located at 8143 Pendleton Pike in Lawrence. GOOD SAMARITAN NETWORK ANNUAL CHRISTMAS DRIVE RETURNS DEC. 8 TO HAMILTON COUNTY 4H FAIRGROUNDS Writer / Kelsey Musick Photography Provided
The Good Samaritan Network (GSN), which is a collaborative of nonprofits that assist at-risk and underserved families in Hamilton County, was founded in 1980 by Nancy Chance, a long-time member of the community. Chance, who was well-known for her work with child abuse victims, founded GSN when firemen from Fishers, Noblesville
and Carmel approached her, seeking a centralized system for the distribution of holiday-season baskets. “I started the program and became the central hub of the distributions,” Chance says. “I have always been passionate about people, so I wasn’t intimidated. I wanted to help solve the community’s problems. When the community decided something had to be done, they saw me as the solution.” According to Chance, everyone in Hamilton County works together for the greater atGeist.com / DECEMBER 2018 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 33
good, and there is no other community like it. Years back, Hamilton County even received an award for being one of the most innovative counties in the country. “We [GSN] want to take care of people and do a good job,” Chance adds. “We communicate constantly through monthly meetings so that we keep everyone on the same page. We have so many people that need our services, and we want to make sure everyone gets their fair share of support.”
With values and aspirations centered around serving the physical, financial and emotional needs of the community, volunteers are always needed. Those with an interest in volunteering can visit gsnlive.org and signup. According to Chance, a community thrives when its residents can provide for themselves and their families. Meeting the needs of people in emergency situations is GSN’s passion.
BUILDING WEALTH. One personalized portfolio at a time.
Last year, GSN served about 26,000 families between Thanksgiving and Christmas, according to Chance. This year, on December 8 at the Hamilton County 4-H Fairgrounds, GSN will hold their annual Christmas Drive. “It’s a distribution,” Chance says. “Not a handout. About 10,000 or so families will come – and all these people are working multiple jobs – and the fairgrounds are all set up like a giant store, so the families can go through and pick out clothes and food, and the children can pick out toys, anything the family might need.” According to Chance, it’s priceless for families to receive help for their children at Christmas, as well as for the parents to receive much-needed food. And through this, the families are teaching their kids to reach across the lines and help those in their community.
High client satisfaction = over 90% client retention.
“People that have an opportunity to share monetary means have the opportunity to give something to a child or family in their community – it’s truly a blessing,” she says. GSN also provides Christmas Eve Meal Deliveries to “elderly, disabled or shutin Hamilton County residents.” The registration deadline is Dec. 1.

MEET INDIANA’S TEACHER OF THE YEAR TAMARA MARKEY Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger Photographer / Ron Wise
She’s patient, kind, enthusiastic, passionate about teaching and the STEM curriculum, and she cares about guiding her students to prepare them for their future. Meet Indiana’s 2019 Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Tamara Markey. Mrs. Markey is a pre-engineering teacher at the McKenzie Center for Innovation and Technology in the Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township, and she’s only been teaching for five years, one of which was her student teaching requirement. In that short time, she’s made a big difference in the school district and in the student’s lives. Markey earned her Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering and Masters in Engineering Technology Education
and entered the workforce as an engineer working for Amoco Oil and BP Pipelines. Though she enjoyed her work, she noticed there was something missing. “I loved the job, but it never fulfilled me personally,” Markey says. “My passion and desire to teach never went away.” The family moved to Indianapolis, Tamara’s husband’s hometown, to be near his parents as they were in declining health. Once back in Indiana, Markey heard about the Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship for STEM professionals. The national teaching fellowship program recruits the nation’s best and brightest recent graduates and career changers with STEM backgrounds and prepares them to become educators in middle and high school science and math classrooms. After being in the workforce nine years, raising her three children for 12 years, and taking time out to be the atGeist.com / DECEMBER 2018 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 37
caregiver for her father-in-law who was in declining health, Markey seized the opportunity to become an educator. After researching the program, Markey began the formal application process. She participated in a screening interview at Purdue, then the next step required her to design a lesson and teach it in front of the panel and other applicants. Finally, several weeks later while on vacation, Markey received the news that she’d been selected for the teaching cohort and IUPUI. The transition to teaching was an adjustment for the entire Markey family, but her husband and children accommodated. “They’ve all been so supportive, especially my husband, and they’ve even learned how to cook,” she says. All the adjusting was worth it, because
Markey couldn’t be happier with the school district to which she was assigned. “I work in one of the best school districts, and I landed at an awesome school,” she says. “The leadership has been wonderful, and my colleagues have been too.” All teachers will tell you some aspects about teaching can be draining, and Markey agrees. But, what makes Markey special is her gift with high school students. “I love the high school level,” she says. “Teenagers can make it hard on their parents to pull stuff out of them. But it’s different for me because I’m their teacher. These kids are young adults, and they let me in their world and talk to me. They’re more mature at this level and eager to explore. I encourage kids to problem solve, think critically and explore pathways for their future. I want them to identify their likes and dislikes, and if that’s not science, technology, engineering or math, I want to help them explore that too.” Markey guided one student who shared with her his love for building cabinets, something he spent a lot of time doing with his grandfather. Markey connected the student with the right teachers so he could explore that option for his future. “Teaching is truly a heartfelt profession,” she says.
“They all had a vested interest in the outcome because they helped me,” she says. “So, when the time came for the announcement, it was a win for them too. They all sent me emails, Facebook posts and phone calls. This award means the world to all of them too.” Now it’s on to the application process for the National Teacher of the Year. The application process will be similar to the Indiana State Teacher of the Year, and finalists will be chosen in early 2019. In the meantime, she’s looking forward to sharing her experiences with other teachers. She’s been invited to speak at a banquet honoring all the District Teachers of the Year around
“The achievement gap in education across the country is heartbreaking,” Markey says. “I’ve seen the data. Indiana has identified the categories that need improvement in Language Arts and Math, and we have aggressive goals to close that gap.” At the national level, she’ll travel to the White House in January to meet other State Teachers of the Year from all over the nation including U.S. Territories. There, she’ll have an opportunity to share her philosophies with other educators and be involved in lots of professional development opportunities. “I hope I represent Indiana well and use this platform to the best of my ability,” she says. With Markey’s exposure in the national arena, she’ll have an opportunity to influence key education leaders and policymakers with her message.
As excited as Markey is to earn this award, her journey is far from over. It started in the spring of 2018 when she was awarded the District Teacher of the Year. In July, she began the intense application process for the Indiana State Teacher of the Year. She sought letters of recommendation from the superintendent and other colleagues and peers.
the state, and she’ll have several other speaking engagements where she can share her experiences with other teachers. As the 2019 Indiana State Teacher of the Year, she will fulfill two obligations. First, she will be working with the Indiana Department of Education on 2020 state education initiatives. 38 / GEIST MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2018 / atGeist.com
“My message is simple. I’m an advocate for instructional equity,” she says. “That means not only understanding the diversity in achievement levels, socio-economic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds in the classroom, but having an understanding of what happens outside the classroom. We have to change how we deliver curriculum to the whole student, try to figure out how to increase parental involvement and show kids what education can do for them longterm. We need to reach the students who perform at a lower level as well as be careful
not to let the high achievers regress due to their fear of failure. It starts with early learning and goes through 12th grade. The success comes when you marry those goals.” Markey’s commitment to teaching goes far beyond the classroom. “We have to prepare these kids for their future,” she adds. “Our success as a nation and staying competitive globally depends on it. I don’t want to see kids fall through the cracks. We can’t save all of them, but we can sure try.” For more information on Lawrence Township Schools, visit ltschools.org.

Investing in the Future New Youth Mentoring Initiative Executive Director, Alison Gatz, Talks Goals, Impact of Mentorship Writer / Matt Keating Photographer / Holly Simmons at Holly Lea Photography
Alison Gatz, the new executive director of Youth Mentoring Initiative (YMI), Fishers loves her work and is looking forward to taking over an organization she adores. YMI provides mentoring for students by building and sustaining a mentoring community with the highest level of service, integrity, encouragement and empathy. She was thrilled to be offered the job. Her history with YMI has been extremely positive. “It goes back to when I was serving on a committee at the YMCA and given the task to come up with a community service project,” Gatz says. “I wanted to start an adult mentoring program because I was seeing so many adults that were doing the best they could every day, but they were feeling very discouraged. I knew YMI provided youth mentoring for students, so I
reached out to establish a partnership.” During those discussions, they asked Gatz to help create the role of Parent Liaison to connect with, and serve, the YMI parents.
forces with to serve Fishers are amazing and inspiring. Gatz’s goal is to simply keep improving YMI.
Gatz will primarily be responsible for fundraising, but along with that, she will work on marketing, community engagement and building relationships with local businesses and partner agencies.
“I want to get better at giving the kids we mentor the support they need in what matters most to them,” Gatz says. “I also want to get better at recruiting mentors who want to give back and make a difference and get better at our relationships in the community by being a solid contributor to the mental health initiative. I would love to see every student in Fishers have a mentor if they want one.”
Gatz noted she couldn’t have asked for a better staff to work with.
Plenty of great projects are planned for the year.
“Our mentors, staff, board of directors, school staff and volunteers have amazing hearts, and they truly love and believe in the mission of YMI,” she says. “The community partners we get to join
“We added a campus coach at Fishers High School (FHS) this year, and that program really exploded,” Gatz says. “We plan to add a campus coach at Hamilton Southeastern High School (HSE) this fall
“While creating that role, I discovered ways to improve some of the systems,” Gatz says. “One thing led to another, and here I am.”

to get that program up and running and possibly a second coach at FHS.” Gatz is looking forward to developing a Corporate Mentoring program that would give YMI’s mentees the ability to go to a mentors’ place of employment rather than the mentor going to their school. “This would really help with the challenge many of our male mentors have in scheduling time to get out of the office to go mentor, but also give our mentees the opportunity to learn about a job, skill or trade while being mentored. It’
to get my hands dirty in the yard, too.” Gatz wants parents to know that raising kids these days takes a village. “I know I am not the best parent all the time, and I cannot be everything to my girls,” she says. “Sometimes they just need to hear another voice other than mine, because, after a while, they don’t hear me. Having a mentor can just be that additional voice telling them they matter, that they

Gatz added that “the power of feeling supported and encouraged can take a mentee from just surviving to thriving. School gets better, they feel more engaged and they begin to have a vision for their life.”
“For the adults in our community, one hour a week is all it takes to completely change the direction of a life,” Gatz adds. “We can change the world, one hour at a time, one student at a time. If time is not a resource you have available, we can always use financial support, no matter what amount. Get involved today at ymionline.org.”

Gatz gets plenty of positive feedback from the Fishers community. “We hear all the time how much our mentees look forward to seeing their mentor each week during school hours, and we also hear from our mentors that meeting their mentee is the highlight of their week,” she says. “When that relationship begins to flourish, the ripple effect to the friends and families that our mentees and mentors share life with is powerful.”

Gatz says she feels blessed that she had the opportunity to stay at home with her girls when they were little, but she also felt the desire to have a parttime job to interact with people.
