alha Arif, owner of BurgerIM in Indianapolis, says his family has a long history in the restaurant industry. For more than 60 years, his family owned a snack shop, Lamori Qulfa, located in Peshawar, the oldest city in Pakistan. While growing up, Arif learned how to prepare food and work with customers. He dreamed of one day opening a restaurant of his own. Today, he has made his dream a reality. In mid-April, Arif opened BurgerIM, to the delight of local residents. “This is my very first restaurant in Indiana, and I’m very happy that so many people have been coming here,” Arif says. “I’ve already had a lot of repeat customers. There are lot of people coming through the doors.” Before he started his BurgerIM restaurant, which is part of a national franchise, Arif worked as a consultant for Sprint, and in the cosmetology industry at his mom’s business, Myra Eyeballs, which is named after Arif ’s sister, Myra. Arif liked the BurgerIM franchise model and thought it would be a good fit for him. Arif noted that the BurgerIM company is famous for its mini burgers that are slightly larger than sliders. BurgerIM has several types of proteins to choose from, including chicken, lamb, salmon, and dry-aged beef. BurgerIM also offers a wide variety of toppings. BurgerIM originated in Tel Aviv, Israel, and has been franchising around the world since 2011, according to Franchise.com. The first U.S. BurgerIM’s were in Southern California, and then the restaurant chain branched out to the rest of the country.
Repeat Customers Arif has noticed many return customers since he opened his doors. “The Angus Beef Burger is really a big seller,” Arif says. “It’s a classic American cheeseburger that gets ordered a lot. Our Crispy Chicken sandwich is also very popular, and our Dry-Aged Beef Burger has been a big hit.” atGeist.com / DECEMBER 2019 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 7
Arif noted that BurgerIM’s Family Boxes, with eight burgers, eight wings, fries and onions rings, and Party Boxes with 16 burgers, have been very popular. “We get a lot of orders from nearby car dealerships, such as the Honda, Subaru, and Chevy dealerships,” Arif says. “The people who work there love our burgers and keep ordering from us.”
Superior risk-adjusted returns with an emphasis on
QUALITY ASSETS.
Arif ’s personal favorites are the Crispy Chicken Sandwich and the Spanish Beef Burger. “I make those for myself quite a lot, because they are so flavorful and delicious,” he says. “I also love our fries, because they are so crunchy on the outside, and soft on the inside.”

“There aren’t a lot of local restaurants that fill the needs of the Halal (denoting or relating to meat prepared as prescribed by Muslim law) ready meals,” Arif says. “This is another Halal restaurant choice. It helps fill a need.” Arif, a Westfield resident, has ambitions to open more BurgerIM restaurants.

“I would like to open another place in Westfield, and maybe some other locations,” Arif says. “There are a lot of communities that need to be served. I want to see how well this one does first, but I’m off to a very good start. People just can’t get enough of great burgers, and this is the place to be to get them! Who doesn’t love a great burger?” BurgerIM is located at 7035 E. 96th St. in Indianapolis. For more information, call 317-863-8183 or visit them online at burgerim.com.

On December 7, from noon to 7 p.m., downtown Fortville will again host Fortville Winterfest, a oneday free event packed with familyfriendly activities. Always held on the first Saturday in December, the kickoff to the holiday season has a nostalgic feel and showcases smalltown living at its best. This year’s celebration has the traditions that keep attendees coming back, but will also feature some new activities. The co-chairs of the 2019 festival are Linda Calhoun and Milda Sterrett, board members of Fortville Action Inc., a nonprofit initiative comprised of local volunteers. Sterrett, a past president, and her husband Bob are founding members of the organization which focuses on strengthening the community spirit of Fortville. The group, which is an Indiana Mainstreet Organization, was formed in 2011 shortly after the first Winterfest held. “We had lived out in the country for years and then we found an old house on Main Street,” Sterrett says. “When we were fixing it up, we used to sit on the porch and say, ‘We will be able to walk to downtown when we move here,’ but there really wasn’t anything to walk downtown to. We came up with the idea of Winterfest to promote Fortville and had the very first one in 2010. Afterward I thought, ‘Shouldn’t there be some kind of record-keeping?’ So that’s when Fortville Action, Inc. was formed.” The day will be crammed with
happenings between the 1 p.m. start of the parade and the 6 p.m. tree lighting ceremony. As usual, booths for vendors selling food and crafts will be set up on the street. Among the activities is a small ice rink at Main and Mill Street as well as a zip line. A performance stage is set up for local musicians and school choirs. Girls in kindergarten through fifth grade can preregister on the Fortville Action Inc. website to be a Snow Flake Princess and participate in the parade as well as perform a routine.

Fortville Winterfest not only gives kids the chance to hand Santa their wish lists but also the opportunity for families to pick out their Christmas trees. Sambol’s Tree Farm will have a lot set up with trees for purchase. It will be staffed by Fortville Action Inc. volunteers. “Every year, the festival grows a bit,” Sterrett adds. “New this year is a human snow globe. It’s an inflated giant globe that people enter into. It’s a great place to take pictures. Also, we will have two carriages available this year. There is a $25 charge for a carriage ride, but the cost can be split up between the riders. “Fortville Action Inc. started as a grassroots organization and it still is. The volunteers make Winterfest possible and give it the old-fashioned Christmas feel it has.” For more information visit FortvilleAction. com and @fortvilleactioninc on Facebook.

Promise Road Business Park closes a real estate gap by offering the chance to own a space tailored to specific needs. The concept is geared to the idea that owning real estate and building equity makes better sense than leasing office space and paying monthly rent.
“For a small business owner, it’s a no-worry investment,” Martin says. “An entrepreneur can make a small investment and pay themselves rent. The location gives exposure since Interstate 69 runs past the property and business names can be seen on the upper part of the building.”
Developer and co-owner Doug Martin realized the potential for the property, which already had two existing buildings
The first two existing buildings have proven to be great investments for their owners. Both buildings are completely full. Owners
include a technology marketing agency, a financial planner, an insurance agency, a landscaper, a pond maintenance company, an exercise facility, a chiropractor, a dentist and even a small church. The second phase, erecting buildings three and four, is currently in the pre-sale period. The resulting 38 units are expected to be ready for occupancy in the second quarter of 2020. “During the pre-sale period, owners can customize their space the way they want it,” Martin adds. “The size of the units could be increased by putting two or more together. The price is affordable for a small business starting at $150,000.” Paul Dick of Resource Commercial Real Estate and agent for the property explains the concept’s flexibility, “We are basically delivering a ‘box’ with four walls, a concrete floor, an electric panel, water and sewer line

to the customer. The space has incredible utility since the owner can design it the way they want. The size of the units ranges from 1,260 to 1,625 square feet and they are high enough that a mezzanine or second floor could be built. The industrial zoning classification allows buyers a wide range of uses and build-out such as offices, warehouse or even boat and RV storage.” “These units, at the very least, will hold their value,” Martin adds. “When someone owns one of these units, they are creating an investment with increasing value. Owning their own space gives small businesses an asset versus nothing.” For more information on Promise Road Business Park contact Paul Dick, Resource Commercial Real Estate at 317663-6540 or email paul.dick@rcre.com.

Peterson’s Celebrates 20 Years As One of Indy’s Premier, Family-Owned Steakhouses Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Michael Durr
For any food-based business to survive for multiple decades in a restaurant-heavy area like Indianapolis is quite an accomplishment. So how has Peterson’s on East 96th Street been able to not only survive for 20 years but thrive as one of the city’s top steakhouses while remaining independent and familyowned all the while?
For General Manager Bradley Phelps, it begins with owner Joe Peterson’s commitment to the business and the Indianapolis community. “Mr. Peterson has always valued the entire staff here and listens to our customers’ feedback,” Phelps says. “He really cares about the kind of experience they have. The other thing is that we deliver a high-quality product with both service and the items DECEMBER 2019
that people consume — spirits, wine and culinary items.” Back in 1999 Joe Peterson, a 1957 Cathedral High School grad, was busy in the corporate world running a family business, Crown Technology and grew interested in opening a steakhouse establishment to provide the kind of quality cuisine he felt was lacking in many steakhouses around the country. Peterson saw potential in Fishers, which was
starting to expand both residentially and commercially at the time, and took over the space formerly occupied by Frisch’s Big Boy on East 96th Street. Since then, Peterson’s has established itself as a high-end, dinner-only destination, and this year the staff officially celebrated the business’s 20th birthday by shutting down the building and inviting its top 500 regular guests to wine and dine the evening away. “It was a way to say thank you to those top regular guests who’ve been with us over the years, and we just threw a big cocktail party shindig for them with live music,” says Phelps, a native of Peoria, Illinois, who joined the Peterson’s team in June of 2016. Phelps says Peterson’s has become known particularly for its barrel-cut filet mignon, which Executive Chef Dave Foegley sources from the restaurant’s Chicagobased butcher. The menu also features New York strip and prime ribeye steak cuts, smoked pork chop, duck breast and smoke-roasted chicken, as well as a sizable selection of seafood items like lobster, crab legs, salmon, oysters and crab-stuffed shrimp. The kitchen staff, helmed by Foegley, sources from several local vendors including Fischer Farms, Traders Point Creamery, Goose the Market, Legacy Maker and others, which Phelps says adds to the overall flavor and quality of the menu. “Our executive chef has a 10-year relationship with our butcher up in Chicago, and he has certain specifications that he’s constantly talking to the butcher about for our barrel-cut filet,” Phelps explains. “Dave has been in the industry as an executive chef for one upscale restaurant or another from Peter’s to St. Elmo to us, for the last 25 years.” No steakhouse would truly be complete without a reasonably well-rounded wine list, and Peterson’s consistently stocks more than 400 selections from around the world. The ever-evolving list, which includes champagnes and sparkling selections as well as reds and whites, has
garnered multiple “Best of Award of Excellence” awards from Wine Spectator magazine. “Our staff really has a commitment to doing things right not just trying to sell everything under the sun to the guest but making sure the guest wants to come back and has that positive experience,” Phelps adds. “With being in the people business, there are times when the connection’s not always made, and people might get a different experience than they were expecting, but we give it our darnedest for sure.” Peterson’s holds special functions regularly including exclusive wine dinners, a “Bourbon, Brew and ‘Q” event around Father’s Day for barbecue enthusiasts, and a March Madness NCAA basketball kickoff event. Phelps says providing an elegant backdrop for all manner of special celebrations has helped to cement Peterson’s status as one of the city’s culinary fixtures for two decades. “Over the years, we’ve become a destination place for birthdays, anniversaries, engagements and the special occasions in life,” he says. “And business people generally appreciate the ambiance when they come in to dine as well. We want people to have the feeling when they leave that they’ve had an uncommon and special experience.” Visit Peterson’s at 7690 East 96th Street in Fishers. A MERRY PRAIRIE HOLIDAY CONNER PRAIRIE’S INAUGURAL EVENT IS THE NEW HOME OF THE REYNOLDS FARM CHRISTMAS LIGHTS Writer / Josh Brown Photography provided by Conner Prairie & Amy Payne
It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and Conner Prairie hopes to make this Christmas season even more wonderful for families across Hamilton County. The inaugural “A Merry Prairie Holiday” event officially started on November 29 and will continue through December 31. The new holiday festival has something for everyone, but perhaps the biggest news of the event is the inclusion of the popular Reynolds Farm Christmas Lights display. Back in July, it was announced that the iconic light display was gifted to Conner Prairie for its new winter experience.
“Our Christmas light display was born out my father’s love for Christmas and our community,” said Gary Reynolds, owner and chairman of Reynolds Farm Equipment, in a July statement. “Transitioning our Christmas lights display to Conner Prairie ensures this tradition of celebrating Christmas with lights continues as part of Conner Prairie’s new A Merry Prairie Holiday festival.”
of holiday festivities,” Burns says. “This year, it will be even more so as we bring new experiences to the holiday season and carry on a time-honored family tradition by displaying the Reynolds Christmas lights, donated by Gary Reynolds and his family, across the grounds as part of the new A Merry Prairie Holiday Festival.”
Norman Burns, President and CEO at Conner Prairie, is excited to include the light display and bring a new tradition to Hamilton County.
In the past, it wasn’t uncommon to see cars lined up all the way back onto State Road 37 for the drive-thru light display. This year, the display is set up across Conner Prairie’s grounds for visitors to walk through and experience.
“Winter is always a special time at Conner Prairie thanks to our 40-year plus tradition
“We are incredibly excited to have the Reynolds Christmas lights this year,”

says Chris Petrelli, Senior Director of Museum Experiences at Conner Prairie. “They were extremely generous in donating that incredible display. It is a major tradition for everyone in Hamilton County. We are humbled and honored to take the baton and keep this beloved tradition going. We spent a lot of time running extension cords and placing the lights. People will be able to get a new perspective on the display. It’s going to be great to see the lights spread out across our grounds.” A Merry Prairie Holiday will include much more than just the Reynolds Christmas Lights. The festival is jampacked with family-friendly events like the North Pole Village — complete with a toy workshop to make holiday gifts, a Polar Bear Plunge dry snow tubing hill, Reindeer Games Midway, Claus’ Cabin, where kids can meet Mrs. Claus and drop their letters off to Santa, and the Kringle’s Carousel ride. Local entertainers and musicians will perform throughout each night on the “Blitzen’s Bandstand,” too. History buffs will appreciate a walk through Prairietown, which includes the 1860s Hoosier Homefront and Soldiers Camp to learn how the season was celebrated during the time of the Civil War. The classic Conner Prairie by Candlelight favorites, like Dr. Campbell’s Soiree, is included as well as a live reading from Charles Dickens “A Christmas Carol” with the sounds of Christmas carolers. “The great thing about this festival is we have planned it to be a two-hour experience,” Petrelli says. “Not only do you get to experience the Christmas lights but all of these events, too. It really has a variety of experiences that the entire family will enjoy.” The festival will also include a Winterland Wagon Ride. The ride will take guests across the historic grounds and through thousands of the Christmas lights.
“I have an 11-year-old and an 8-yearold, and I’m excited about the wagon ride and the Prairietown experience,” Petrelli adds. “I think the tubing hill and the carousel will also be big crowd-pleasers.” Unlike the popular Headless Horseman Halloween event, A Merry Prairie Holiday will not have any time ticketed rides or events. Instead, all of the events, like the Winterland Wagon Ride, the Kringle’s Carousel and the Polar Bear Plunge, will all be first come, first served. Petrelli stresses that there shouldn’t be much of a need for families and visitors to show up extremely early before gates open for the event. A Merry Prairie Holiday is an outdoor festival. Even though the colder weather is upon us, Petrelli urges families not to be deterred from visiting, even on some of the more chilly evenings. “Obviously, people should bundle up, but I want to reassure people that we have opportunities for you to stay warm, too,” he says. “Our welcome center, store and more will be open for people to come inside if they get too cold. We will also have several fire pits going and plenty of hot-chocolate stands throughout the grounds. So, don’t fear the cold too much.” A Merry Prairie Holiday will be held Friday through Sunday evenings from 6 to 10 p.m. Advance tickets are $16 per guest and $8 per member. Tickets purchased at the gate will be $20 per guest or $10 per member. For more information and to purchase advance tickets, visit them online at connerprairie.org. The festival will wrap up on Dec. 31 with a special early fireworks display at 9 p.m. to celebrate the New Year. Conner Prairie is located at 13400 Allisonville Road in Fishers. You can give them a call at 317-776-6000. DECEMBER 2019

HAMILTON COUNTY KIDS COATS PREPARES FAMILIES FOR WINTER

Every year, hundreds of families from all over the Hamilton County area come and receive free coats to stay warm for the winter. Hamilton County Kids Coats is responsible for changing kids and their families’ lives and preparing them for the cold Indiana winters. Kids Coats’ mission is to provide coats and winter clothes to families in the area by partnering with the local community in Hamilton County. Aside from giving away coats, Kids Coats connects these families to community resources, prayer opportunities and churches around the area. “It’s sharing the warmth of Christ’s love,” says Stephanie Fairfield, president of the board of directors. Hamilton County Kids Coats started in 2004 at the direction of three women from a local church called Carmel United Methodist Church (CUMC). They saw the need to collect and distribute coats for the children in Hamilton County. There were organizations similar for residents of Marion County, but Hamilton County residents did not have that opportunity. The ladies at CUMC wanted to change that and reach out to their own community. The first year it began, the event was sponsored and run by CUMC and the Good Samaritan Network. A few years after the organization started, it grew to the point where hundreds of people would stand outside in the cold in November waiting to receive coats. They soon came up with several different host churches in each city for Hamilton County residents to pick up their coats every year.
online. When they signed up, they had to write down how many children they have, what their genders are and what size coats they wear. Residents and their families were still able to walk in if they were not able to make an appointment. This year, more than 800 families made appointments to receive winter coats. “I love watching a little kid come walking down the hall proud as can be of the coat he or she just received and seeing the relief on a parent’s face,” Fairfield says. “That is one less thing they have to think about.”
In 2018, Kids Coats gave out more than 3,000 new and gently used winter coats and winter wear to children and families. They also gave out more than 2,000 lightweight jackets to school kids in need. The six giveaway sites do their best to provide a safe place for families to come and pick up their coats. Many residents signed up for 15-minute appointments DECEMBER 2019
The partner churches that housed the giveaways this past October and November included CUMC in Carmel, Green Valley Church of Christ in Noblesville, Saint Louis De Montfort Catholic Church in Fishers, Arcadia Brethren Church in Arcadia, Sheridan First United Methodist Church in Sheridan and Epiphany Lutheran Church in Westfield.
Even though the giveaways ended in November, there is still an opportunity to receive coats. Merciful HELP Center in Carmel keeps a selection of coats on hand until the end of February for those who may have missed the giveaway opportunities. Anything that is left is saved for the warehouse for next year. According to Fairfield, there were additional resources offered at the giveaway locations. Called Opportunity Village, this area of additional resources was made up of organizations and agencies around the area where people can sign up and receive help. Fairfield loves the one-stop-shop idea where residents can receive more than just a coat if they need it. Fairfield’s role as the President of the Board of Directors is entirely on a volunteer basis. As of now, they have an all-volunteer staff who work hard to help their mission succeed. Fairfield leads the board of directors to work through the business side of Kids Coats, making sure the organization is a welloiled machine so those kids can receive the coats and other resources they need. “We are always looking for volunteers at all levels of the organization,” Fairfield says. “Everyone is valuable, needed and so much appreciated.” Those interested can sign up for a place to volunteer on the website. Just about anyone can find a place they can plug in to help year to year. Kids Coats can always use help sorting and distributing at the warehouse, too. If people do not want to volunteer, they can donate coats and other winter wear at two locations yearround: CUMC and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church/ Merciful HELP Center. If you are interested in receiving coats as a Hamilton County resident, interested in becoming a volunteer or simply curious, visit kidscoats.org for more information.

and December. This farmers’ market focuses more on gifts and products related to the Holidays. This will be its third year in Fishers.
During the months of November and December, the Fishers Holiday Farmers’ Market comes to town with local businesses, “When the weather gets worse, it’s a family fun and holiday spirit. fun thing to do as a family,” says Marissa Deckert, assistant director of fishers parks Every year, there are two farmers’ markets and recreation. in Fishers. The first one is the Fishers Summer Farmers’ Market, which occurs The Holiday Market is hosted in the every Saturday from May through October. community building at Roy G. Holland This farmers’ market usually focuses more Memorial Park in Fishers. This year, they are on produce and summer-related products. bringing in 25 vendors, five of which are new. The second is the Fishers Holiday Farmers’ Market, which occurs during November Deckert has been with the parks department DECEMBER 2019
for about a year now, and she loves the farmers’ markets in Fishers. Much of her role is to oversee the activities in Fishers, including the farmers’ markets, concerts, Independence Day celebrations, Halloween celebrations and even a mud day event where children and families can have fun in the mud. She especially loves the farmers’ market because it brings local businesses and residents together as a community. “As a Fishers resident, I love the sense of community it brings,” Deckert says. “Every Saturday, my family and I are at the farmers’ market and love running into friends and community members.”
Deckert wanted to focus especially on the holiday theme for the farmers’ market this year. She wanted to bring in vendors that could offer either a guestbought gift basket or a guest-made gift basket. Some of the products featured this year include handmade Indian grown chai teas, egg rolls for breakfast, a lot of sweets and drinks and even homemade dog treats. As another special treat, Santa is visiting the farmers’ market closer to the Christmas season. The Holiday Market is a scaled-down version of the Summer Market, where the Holiday Market only receives several hundred guests instead of the Summer Market’s several thousand. This is mainly due to limited space in the winter location. However, according to Deckert, they try to maximize as much space as they can for the holidays. It is set up in the Holland Park community building, and it’s a popular place for residents and guests to enjoy the winter season. “Come and check out all these vendors,” Deckert adds. “You can’t get them in your normal supermarkets.” The farmers’ market is not only a place for holiday shopping but a place where families and friends can enjoy fellowship. For those guests who want to come for more than shopping, the market includes a place for families and friends to hang out. They even provide a scavenger hunt for children to participate in. There are also reusable shopping bags available for guests who have never been before or do not have a bag already. Deckert recommends that people stop by and ask about getting a reusable bag. For Deckert, it’s always a tradition worth celebrating. Anyone and everyone is invited to bring their friends and family to shop for local treats and gifts, participate in scavenger hunts, pull up a chair and chat with friends and enjoy the holidays with the Fishers community. IN THE SPIRIT OF GIVING GOOD SAMARITAN NETWORK OF HAMILTON COUNTY ASSISTS FAMILIES THROUGH ANNUAL HOLIDAY DISTRIBUTIONS Writer / Jon Shoulders Photography Provided by GSN
Each holiday season, families throughout Hamilton County in need of some assistance with procuring food, clothing or toys have the opportunity to turn to Good Samaritan Network (GSN) of Hamilton County, which organizes distribution programs around Thanksgiving and Christmas time. GSN Founder and Executive Director Nancy Chance says the holiday programs are part of a year-round effort to lift up county residents who’ve fallen on hard times for a variety of reasons. “Through our agencies and pantries we serve about 47,000 clients in Hamilton County throughout the year, which is 18% of our population here,” says Chance, who grew up
in Noblesville. “And that’s not just the holiday services we do. That includes temporary services of some kind within our network. In our network, we have car repair, an energy assistance program and cancer funds. Our goal is to catch people before they start spiraling down and things get worse.” Chance unofficially founded GSN back in 1980 after Fishers, Carmel and Noblesville police and firefighters expressed their collective interest in a coordinated effort to provide for families in need around holiday time. Fifteen years later, the organization was formally founded as a nonprofit and continues to assist thousands of Hamilton County residents year after year.
the county so we can all be more effective and reduce duplication,” Chance says. “All the agencies and pantries work together and have met once a month since 1980.” GSN kicked off its annual holiday assistance events this year with a Thanksgiving giveaway on November 23, which included distribution of food boxes and baskets to Hamilton County residents at the Hamilton County 4H Fairgrounds in Noblesville. The event was followed by meal deliveries on Thanksgiving Day for elderly and disabled individuals throughout the county.
On December 14 GSN continues its volunteer-based work with its Christmas distribution program at the Fairgrounds, “We’ve tried to be the umbrella organization which Chance says is the organization’s biggest event and includes toys, food and to coordinate the network of agencies, clothing. churches, food pantries and businesses in DECEMBER 2019
“We ran the Christmas distribution all the way through New Year’s Day last year,” she says, adding that the GSN was able to assist 26,978 people through its 2018 holiday distribution efforts. “Basically families sign up and they can be privately sponsored by churches, businesses, clubs and private individuals. Usually, about three-fourths of those who sign up are privately sponsored, and the rest we take care of at the 4H building.”
“A lot of people we help are working and sometimes working two or three jobs trying to hold a family together,” she says. “If you’re making $40,000 a year, after taking care of two kids and paying rent, utilities and insurance, that doesn’t leave you with much. We also help people who work here in the county but don’t live here because of the high cost of living. We want to help people to stay stabilized and keep their jobs and have their families stable.”
Many factors can prompt individuals and families to seek support — job losses and mental or physical illnesses to name a few — and Chance saw an increase in the need for aid after the financial downturn back in 2008 left many county residents unemployed. Those in need of GSN services or holiday assistance can submit on application online or through the mail. Volunteerism plays a crucial role in GSN operations and, according to Chance, the organization counts on more than 29,000 volunteer hours per year to make its various events and programs run smoothly. “On top of our staff we have 16 volunteers - retirees and business people - that come in at least once or twice a week to do skills work and specialized projects for us,” she adds. “That’s really what’s allowed us to keep up with all of our programming.” GSN works alongside 268 agencies, 43 pantries, 280 churches, 69 schools and five hospitals for its various programming and services, which include food and shelter, financial assistance, education and transportation.
A non-psychoactive compound meaning it does not get you high Hemp and marijuana are from the same family of plants but they are not the same plant. Hemp will not get you high.
Chance says one of her biggest challenges is continually raising awareness of the need for assistance throughout Hamilton County, which she says is an area many Central Indiana residents tend not to associate with underserved individuals and families. DECEMBER 2019
The Good Samaritan Network of Hamilton County is located at 12933 Parkside Drive in Fishers. The hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information, including volunteer and donation details, a frequently-askedquestions page, a Hamilton County food pantry search map and more, visit gsnlive.org or call 317-842-2603.

its smoothies are meant to be enjoyed as meal replacements. “We use a meal replacement protein powder and we’ll add fruit as needed and a couple of other things for different flavors,” Dewald says. “The idea is that instead of just yogurt and fruit and other things, we’re able to keep the calories and the sugar very low by doing the meal replacement powder and water.”

Since Healthies opened in June, Dewald says they’ve received nothing but positive feedback. “Everybody pretty much says that our side of town really needed something like this and that now is a good time for it,” Dewald says. “We’re getting a lot of good feedback as far as the atmosphere goes as well. It’s a very positive, high-energy place. We kind of have a mission to make your day better as opposed to just serve you and get a transaction. We’re really trying to make a difference. People are saying that it’s working.”
Dewald specifically chose his current Geist location because of its vibe and how he could make it feel like his own home for customers. “Indianapolis as a whole, I’ve been wanting to come here for a few years now. I’m actually from South Bend, Indiana, originally,” he says. “Now why did we pick specifically the east side where we’re at, pretty much it has just a little more of the vibe that I personally relate with. We liked to pick our location and make it look and feel like our own home.” Dewald says that Healthies is extremely different than other smoothie places in town. Most notable is its policy of not having extra charges.

NEW APP ALLOWS PEOPLE TO HELP LAWRENCE STUDENTS IN NEED Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided by MSD Lawrence Township
from their phones. Participants will know exactly where they are helping and why.
see how much support our students and families have.”
The Metropolitan School District (MSD) of Lawrence Township has had a successful history working with partners and organizations that help them make a positive impact on the lives of the students they serve. With those great partnerships, a solid vision and the leadership of MSD’s Student Services Department, they have introduced their newest partner, Purposity.
“Community members and businesses can become involved in Purposity by downloading the app on their phones and follow MSD of Lawrence Township,” says Tracy Beer, the McKinney-Vento Liaison, Foster Care Liaison and Family Liaison for MSD Lawrence Township. “Once a week, Purposity will push out the needs we have listed. Those who follow MSD of Lawrence Township will receive the weekly notifications from Purposity when we have needs posted and choose if they wish to purchase items requested.”
Beer believes having Purposity is another avenue to help the MSD of Lawrence Township meet student and family needs.
Purposity allows people to quickly and easily lend a hand to Lawrence Township students. By signing up, participants are sent just one weekly notification with specific Lawrence Township needs via the Purposity app. The program’s leaders say it might be a winter jacket for a student in one of the Lawrence Township schools or household essentials for a family that lost its home in a fire. People can decide if they want to help and meet a need in just a few clicks, right
Beer notes that the response has been great so far. “We went live on September 26, and posted four items,” Beer says. “Those needs were met within 24 hours. We posted eight more on that Sunday, and those were also purchased within 24-36 hours. We received all the items by Oct 3. It has been great to atGeist.com / DECEMBER 2019 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 41
“The Office of Student Services relies on donors, community partners and the Lawrence Township Schools Foundation to
support students and families,” Beer says. “Purposity is an added bonus. Our needs are great. Some of the families we work with rarely receive new clothes or new household items. Many of us take that for granted. When families are trying to get out from under homelessness, financial hardship or some other chronic stress — these things that may seem small to you and I can make a big difference in how they feel physically and mentally.” Beer adds that Purposity is easy to use and only takes a few minutes to change the life of a student or family. “Everything is completely anonymous, so followers don’t know who is requesting items and those receiving don’t know who is giving those items,” Beer says. “Even the school district doesn’t know who is making the purchases.” Purposity requests pull directly from Amazon, so the variety of options for purchase is endless, according to Beer. “Even though the average cost of items is around $30, we are able to make requests for purchase up to $250,” she says. “Other communities have been able to purchase items such as beds, bedding, lamps and clothing for parent job interviews.” Beer adds that Purposity “allows the community to support our schools in a way that is both tangible and timely. This year, MSD of Lawrence Township has a hashtag, #Strong Schools, Strong Communities. Purposity is a perfect example of this in action.” 42 / GEIST MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2019 / atGeist.com
