LET LUMINOCITY ENLIGHTEN YOUR HOME Most of us take great pride in the appearance of the exterior of our homes. Every spring we don’t give a second thought to spending hundreds or sometimes thousands of dollars on new flowers, shrubs and mulch, while at
the same time, doing absolutely nothing to enhance the appearance of our homes at night. Outdoor lighting not only beautifies your home but also increases its security.
Luminocity, a locally owned and operated business, has specialized in designing and installing outdoor lighting environments for nearly 10 years. Luminocity’s owner, Karl Lundberg, brings the same high level of passion and sense of pride to Luminocity that he did in his military career. Karl retired from the U.S. Marine Corp at the rank of Colonel. His philosophy with respect to customer service is that customers should be treated with the same level of trust and respect that he would want for his parents. There are many alternatives when it comes to outdoor lighting. You can purchase solarpowered lights, which put off a strange blue glow but do little to actually illuminate your home. You can hire the same guy who spreads mulch in your flower beds to string some outdoor lights around the house haphazardly, like Christmas lights. Or you can call a real professional like Karl at Luminocity, whose only business is to create an outdoor lighting environment based on the particular characteristics of your home and the atmosphere you would like to create. When you call Luminocity, expect a personal visit from Karl, who will inspect your property and talk to you about what sort of lighting experience you have envisioned. Moreover, Luminocity uses only high-quality outdoor lighting fixtures with LED bulbs. Call Luminocity if you want your home to look as good at night as it does during the daytime.
“
It is hard to find really good customer service these days, but Karl Lundberg epitomizes excellent customer service! We had Luminocity install our landscape lights about three years ago and were extremely happy with the installation....Karl was very quick to respond and fixed the lights very promptly and didn’t even charge us for the repair. I would highly recommend Luminocity for any landscape lighting needs! Excellent job. Karl is the true professional.” - John, Carmel
“
Thank you for all your help! The lighting project is beautiful and far exceeded my expectations! I will be certain to highly recommend you to all my friends! You are an artist!” - Wayne, Carmel

SUMMER CONCERT LINEUP PREVIEW Writer / Christy Watson
Will it be cowboy hats and boots, black T-shirts and jeans, or coconut bras and leis that don your arrival at Klipsch Music Center this summer? Are camping for Dave Matthews and date night for ZBB (Zac Brown Band) or Luke Bryan marked on your calendar, as well? The 2014 concert season is underway for yet another spectacular and diverse lineup that gets many area residents’ heart rates aflutter this time of year. Having just celebrated 25 years as a successful and nationally recognized “Best Music Venue,” the changes just don’t stop when it comes to improving the concert experience at KMC. Going head to head with mother nature during the off season, construction of a new bar in the venue’s south plaza and a new program that provides guests the opportunity to purchase a table for individual shows are just an example of the first class service this venue strives to give its guests. “The concept is that guests can experience wait-free service throughout their visit,
and their own reserved table. The bar will be in a great location so it’s close to just about everything,” says Andrew Newport, the GM for North American Concerts and Live Nation, who is celebrating his own 15-year milestone, working at the venue. “Healthier food options and locally grown produce and meat from responsibly raised animals is another very cool program being offered that allows us to support the community while offering better products to the fans,” offers Newport. The variety of talent this year is unsurpassed, with some rock ‘n’ roll heavy-hitters headed this way, from seasoned acts like Journey/Steve Miller, to Kiss and Def Leppard, to the farewell tour of Motley Crüe and Alice Cooper. Everybody’s favorite Caribbean crooner, Jimmy Buffett, returns June 26 while his Parrothead fans are busy preparing for their extravagant tailgate parties. Country music has made its way into the hearts of many and the evolution of the Country Mega Ticket has made it easier for patrons to catch the boot-
stomping, hip-shaking talent of acts like Brad Paisley, Tim McGraw and Lady A, to name a few. Camping at Klipsch will be offered for the two-day Luke Bryan event in late August. The season will round out in September with Toby Keith and the resonant sound of Dierks Bentley. Never to deny the showcase of newer talent and tastes, Klipsch excitedly will welcome OneRepublic/The Script, Wiz Khalifa’s Under the Influence of Music Tour, and Kings of Leon. With nearly all of the venue’s boxes sold out for the season, a great way to see the shows is through the VIP program that allows purchasers to take advantage of a private parking lot, access to the VIP Club and Lounge, as well as access to exclusive seats. Season seat and series seat packages are also still available. Whatever your tastes in music, be sure not to let those summer nights slip by without a visit to Klipsch Music Center, and meet up with about 23,999 of your soon-to-be closest friends.

Smith Distributing Inc. The Anderson-based company serves much of northeast Indiana, including Hartford City, Richmond, Anderson, Muncie and Hamilton County.
Smith is not exactly a common German name, and family lore has it the name change came when their grandfather was navigating the immigration process. “He said, ‘That was the name of the guy in front of me and the name in front of him and the name in front of him,’ so that’s how the name came about,” said Smith Sr. Smith Sr.’s father started his own distributing business after graduating from Notre Dame, carrying a variety of beers until 1996. Smith Jr., who is sales manager for Hamilton County, got his start in the family business at age 14, scrubbing floors and painting the warehouse.
Smith Sr. said his family has been distributing “I had this little 6-inch-by-4-inch brush, and I got painting,” Smith Jr. said with a smile. beer pretty much since coming to America. “I’m a third-generation beer wholesaler,” he said. “My granddad immigrated from Germany at the turn of the century, and he was kind of a local entrepreneur from Alexandria, Indiana.”
Explaining the key to longevity in the distributing business, Smith Sr. said it’s important to have good relationships with retailers. He credited Budweiser with launching a variety of promotions that help with brand identification, while also
launching new products that retailers are looking for. “Right now it’s kind of in vogue: What’s new?” said Smith Sr. “So from a legacy brand like Bud Light, we kind of continually have to re-invent the ‘what’s new’ piece of it.” Whether it’s new Budweiser flavors or craft beers, Smith Sr. said sampling events are an important part of promotions. “It’s all getting the consumer to have a taste experience and also have a connectivity with the marketing,” he said. The company supports several community causes. One is the Folds of Honor scholarship program, which provides scholarships for families of soldiers killed or disabled during war. Smith Distributing connected with the program three years ago and has been supporting it since, most recently with a $5,000 donation toward a scholarship for a local family. You will also see the Smiths at the Geist Lake Coalition’s Fourth of July “Blast on the

Bridge” celebration near the Budweiser Build a Bar. Not only do they bring their massive mobile bar to the center of the bridge for the fireworks show, they donate $10,000 to the cause as well. More than 20 percent of the company employees recently took to the streets for Geist Cleanup Day, gathering and bagging several hundred pounds of trash. Smith Jr. said the rubbish included everything from toilet seats to fishing lures. That kind of personal involvement is important, he adds. “We wanted to give something extra,” he said. “It’s nice to write a check, but sometimes that doesn’t get to the root of the problem.”
The Smiths share a beer at Terrance Smith’s Geist home in Fishers.
Looking ahead, Smith Jr. is optimistic he’ll still be working with his dad 20 years from now. The area is growing, he said, and they want to be a part of that.

HOSTING THE PERFECT WEDDING, HERE IN GEIST Writer / Anne E. O’Connor
The hours spent celebrating a new marriage are often the result of a year of preparation and decision-making. One thing is sure. Whatever the theme or special requirements, Geist is a marvelous place to host the party. Whether you choose an outdoor celebration by the water or a fete held in an elegant ballroom, there is something for everyone.
INDIANAPOLIS YACHT CLUB
“They’ll be here all throughout the day,” she said. The ceremony, if done on-site, and the reception might take five or six hours. The bridal party can spend the day doing their makeup, getting dressed and taking photos.

“It is fun, It’s very unique and it’s always different,” said Yvonne Todd, catering and banquet sales manager.
“The best thing we offer is location,” said Bill Lorch. The club manager at the Indianapolis Yacht Club could have been talking about any of the venues around the area. “There are a lot of good photo opportunities being right on the lake,” he said.
With eight different spots from a rustic barn to a pillar-free hall near the historical park, wedding parties of all sizes can find just the right spot to commemorate the big day, indoors or out. “I do have outdoor venues, but it’s completely weather dependent. We book an indoor venue and hope we can do it outside,” she said.
Some couples even decide to arrive or depart by boat. The waterside Most weddings are planned at least a year in advance, but the club is a popular spot for outdoor weddings. Although weather is number of locations means that Conner Prairie can accommodate always a concern, “I tell brides I’ve been here eight years. It’s only rained last-minute bookings. on two weddings,” Lorch said. Even if it does rain, guests will enjoy the new walls, balusters and carpets at the recently remodeled facility. The ideal size for a wedding at the Indianapolis Yacht Club is 150 people. A balcony, the main room and a mezzanine can accommodate gatherings of between 75 and 200 people.

“The views are spectacular outside our ballroom,” said Kelly Letzler. The catering sales manager at The Hawthorns Golf & Country Club said the large room overlooking the golf course is unique because it is one of the area halls with windows. The club’s elegant decor is especially suitable for weddings. Classic, yet contemporary, the neutral colors allow the wedding party to shine. A wedding at Hawthorns is an all-day affair. The room is booked from 10 a.m. to midnight.
Recently renovated with updated colors, carpets and fixtures, the Indianapolis Yacht Club is a perfect venue for a Geist wedding. Pictured here is Frank O’Connell, Chairman of the Board with club coordinator Bill Lorch.

INDIANAPOLISSAILING.ORG 11325 FALL CREEK ROAD, INDIANAPOLIS 317-849-0021 The sailing club is best known for boat races and regattas, but if no event is planned, members can rent the clubhouse for events up to 100 people. Only a smattering of weddings are held throughout the racing season, but as long as the racing schedule is known, dates can be booked a year in advance. “It’s a nice venue for a wedding,” said John Schumacher, chairperson of the house and galley. Tents can be set up outside, giving guests a picturesque view of the reservoir and boats surrounding the club.
Yvonne Todd, catering and banquet sales manager at Conner Prairie, says their venue provides a rustic backdrop for any wedding.
The sailing club is a lower-cost alternative than some of the other locations. “People can bring their own food or caterer. We even have a kitchen. Costs can be contained,” he said. “It’s really a facility for someone who wants to do it for themselves.”

TRENDS Rustic is hot. Vintage is chic. “It’s all about barn weddings, chalkboard signs, DIY and personal details,” said Caroline Myers, director of operations and marketing for MPB Distinctive Catering. “That seems to be the hot market right now — barns and Mason jars,” Todd said. While popular themes recall more traditional days, modern technology has earned a spot in the festivities. Photo booths, where guests can go inside and have pictures taken or leave a video message for the bride and groom, are quite popular. “I’m seeing more all the time” at the Indianapolis Yacht Club, said Lorch. Sometimes the photos go online immediately, allowing far-flung family and friends to celebrate in real time. The music is high-tech too. Most weddings at the club hire a DJ, rather than have live music, Lorch said. “When I say the DJ is an important component in a wedding, he’s the one who keeps the whole thing flowing. It revolves around him. I don’t think that a lot of brides realize how important he actually is.”

Changes are afoot in what food is preferred during the receptions. Some brides choose to replace traditional wedding cakes with mini pies, ice cream sundae bars and little trifles, Todd said. Even post-reception food is evolving. “Late-night snacks are a big, new trend,” Letzler said. After the main reception is over, about an hour before the bar closes, Hawthorns Country Club often serves mini pizzas and other pub food.

ever has a viewing party been so meticulous in terms of required attire! In honor of the premiere of the AMC series “Turn” about the first network of American Revolutionary spies, Max Michael hosted a party. Michael and his friends are historical re-enactors who specialize in the Revolutionary War, so it was only natural that they would anxiously await this new series. They even shot off a model cannon to commemorate its start. Historical re-enactment is a beloved hobby to thousands and is more common than one might think. Men and women alike are drawn to the hobby because of its mix of community theater, camping and 18th-century American history. A passion for history is a common thread among re-enactors. For some, the bond is blood. Many re-enactors, such as Doug Roush, have ancestors who fought in the Revolutionary War. Two of Roush’s ancestors were present at Valley Forge. According to his mother, Roush copied the Declaration of Independence by hand when he was 7 years old, attempting to mimic the writing of the
era. Today, Roush is an expert calligrapher who recently traveled to Williamsburg, Va., to demonstrate calligraphy at the historic St. George Tucker House. Roush began re-enacting 20 years ago, starting with Civil War re-enactments. Growing up, he noticed a lithograph on his grandmother’s wall and didn’t realize until much later that the lithograph was the original documentation of his great-greatgrandfather’s muster out from the U.S. Army. Roush’s great-greatgrandfather had made the frame himself. Michael got his re-enactment start when his daughter, Aly, asked him to volunteer for Valley Forge Day at Indian Creek Elementary. Her teacher, Stephen Hardwick, welcomes volunteer re-enactors to the event. Michael had always been a history buff, so it was a natural fit. He describes himself and other re-enactors as “frustrated history teachers.” Spending time with these men, one quickly realizes that this description is accurate. Everything is an opportunity for a history

lesson. For instance, one learns that many common phrases originate from operating a musket. “Flash in the pan” refers to the spark that sets off an ammunitionpropelling reaction. “Lock, stock and barrel” is a literal reference to the parts of a musket. And “half-cocked” originally referred to the positioning of the musket lock while loading ammunition. Another fun fact: Paul Revere, on his famous ride from Lexington to Concord, did not declare: “The British are coming!” He actually said: “The regulars are coming!” Michael and Roush are members of the Northwest Territory Alliance, or NWTA, an umbrella group for many smaller 18thcentury re-enactment groups. NWTA members find themselves hooked on reenacting in all sorts of ways. Art Garceau explains that he went to Michael with a question about genealogy, and before he knew it, he was holding a musket. Garceau’s family immigrated to the colonies from France in the early 1700s. Don Taeger is of German decent, and many of the British troops were German. (At the time, the King of England was of German heritage, so this makes sense.) A former history teacher of Taeger’s identified his passion for history, and atGeist.com / JUNE 2014 / GEIST / 39

Taeger began re-enacting in 1977. A selfidentified history geek, Taeger loves reenactment and is able to intimately explain German involvement in the Revolutionary War and subsequent settlements of the Pennsylvania Germans. David Aponte recognized his innate passion for American history when he was growing up in Bethlehem, Pa. Living in close proximity to historic sites, Aponte knew quite a bit about early American history. When he first began re-enacting, he felt like a kid again, doing something he really loved and having a lot of fun. Donning his first official uniform was a euphoric experience for Aponte.
are curious as to how the show will develop because based on history, Robert Rogers, one of the main characters, should be leaving the area in a few months. They will see how it goes. It is Hollywood, after all.
This hint of youth is also evident in Jason Doerflein’s response as to why he chose Revolutionary War re-enactment over another era: “We have muskets!”
Customized investment portfolios that perform.
Re-enactment events are typically held once a month from May through October. “The Spirit of Vincennes Rendezvous” will take place Memorial Day weekend (May 24-25) at the only Revolutionary War site in Indiana. These men argue that the Battle at Vincennes was more important than Bunker Hill. Given their knowledge of this era in history, it’s hard to argue their point. Vincennes is located on the Wabash River, which was a vital gateway to the Northwest Territories. (Learn more at spiritofvincennes.org.) The conversation frequently returns to weaponry, namely the muskets. Apparently the heavy muskets don’t always work. But, “when the musket does work,” Michael says, “it’s hugely satisfying.” So what was their reaction to the show “Turn”? Overall, the men gave it a thumbs-up. They have a few quibbles, such as the premature appearance of Continental Dragoon uniforms and a heavy Scottish presence (apparently the plaid is out of place), but overall they think it’s a job well-done. INVEST IN YOUR NEST: ADDING KITCHEN DRAMA By Pat Carlini
and the couple’s wine rack to match.
When Scott and Kari St. Clair built their Geist home in 2004, cherry wood was the popular choice for kitchens and floors. So the couple put in narrow planked cherry wood floors, cherry kitchen cabinets and even cherry wood banisters around the home. Now, 10 years later, the St. Clairs thought it was time to “invest in their nest” and change out the wood floors. But they were having trouble finding floors that they liked with their existing cherry kitchen cabinets.
After it all dried, the hardware was put back on, and voila! Instant kitchen drama for a fraction of the cost of replacing the kitchen cabinets. Plus, the new cabinet color will go with almost any new wood flooring choices. “Once we saw the look of the dark cabinets, we opted to do the same treatment on our white mantel and banisters and railings
upstairs! We are thrilled with the results!” says the St. Clair family. Kitchen “drama” can usually be done within a week and costs between $2,500 and $3,500, depending on the size of the kitchen. For more information and more photos, go to patcarlini.com.
“So we decided to change the look of our cabinets to open up more opportunities for wood floor colors and options,” says Kari. The St. Clairs thought about white cabinets, but Kari said “she’s just not a white kitchen person.” So they met with Lisa from Furniture Fix who suggested darkening the kitchen cabinets, which would make it easier to match new wood flooring, as well as add some drama to their existing kitchen. “Cabinets in a deep, almost black-brown shade make a statement in a kitchen,” says Lisa. “Plus, they already have a nice natural stone backsplash, which would go great with dark cabinetry.” Lisa says darkening kitchen cabinets is one of her favorite techniques because of the low mess and little downtime. New products allow the stain to go on right over the existing cabinets surface on-site. Then, the edges of the doors and drawers are lightly sanded for a distressed look. The process is finished by adding a protective clear topcoat, which allows some of the original cherry to peek through the dark stain. “The result is a natural looking, darker wood,” says Lisa. “Not one solid color.” Lisa also painted the nearby pantry door

RUNNING THE MARATHON OF LIFE
Writer / Anne E. O’Connor Photographer / Eric Meyer
At the end of a half marathon, most runners are looking for water, food and maybe a little first aid. Tracy Yarbrough was stunned by what was waiting for her. Yarbrough and her boyfriend Shane Davis had a goal of running in all 50 states. As part of that goal, she and Davis made the trip from Clarksville, Tenn., to run in the Geist Half Marathon on May 17. As it turned out, Davis had more than a good run in mind. He enlisted the help of Aprill Shelburne,
volunteer race coordinator, who, in return for a check to cover the costs, set him up with his essential end-of-race supplies: flowers, champagne, glasses and balloons.
Before the half marathon, Indiana held no special meaning for the couple, who come from the town made famous by the Monkees in the 1960s.
Usually Yarbrough, 44, and Davis, 47, run together. She reintroduced him to running when they started dating at the beginning of 2013.
“It was a way to celebrate her birthday and run a half marathon,” he said. “She didn’t realize there was more to the story than that.”
The weekend race marked the sixth state they have run in together since setting out on their quest. Her birthday fell on the following Monday, making the weekend a little extra special.
Davis was confident that he would finish the race before his running partner, although he has not always been the faster of the pair. “When we first started running, she was much faster than me,” he said. He suggested that if one of them felt strong, it

would be OK to go ahead. “That was my goal. I wanted to finish before her so that I could be waiting for her,” he said. “I did a good job of keeping it a surprise.” And what a surprise it was. Yarbrough was a little out of breath at the finish line, which was at the top of a hill. “The next thing you know, I’m on one knee. People are crowding around,” Davis said. Then an announcement came over the public address system: “Tracy, Shane has a question for you.” Yarbrough accepted the marriage proposal, giving the enthusiastic crowd of strangers an unexpected ending to the race. The couple will surely remember the sixth state they ran in together, and they plan to continue running and visiting all the states. Even their honeymoon will entail a little fancy footwork. Since Hawaii will be one of the more difficult states to get to, they plan to honeymoon there. They probably will not race, but just might take a run on the beach, Davis said. Proposing at the end of a run held a special meaning for the athletes. “We really see running as symbolic or an allegory for life,” Davis said. “The hills, the peaks, the valleys and the hard times— you just sort of have to push through.” “I want to run the marathon of life with her,” he said.
Shane Davis and Tracy Yarborough of Clarksville, Tennessee, were engaged at the finish line of the Geist Half Marathon on May 17. Davis waited for Yarborough to finish the race and surprised her by popping “the question” followed by roses and a champagne toast.

SKIER DOWN FLAG in the water in the area. It is used when a skier is in the water separated from the boat because he or she is either preparing to take off, has fallen, or dropped.
Why is it important? Skiers (or boarders or tubers) floating in the water separated from a boat are hard to see—especially on a rough-water or cloudy day. With the flag, the spotter can alert other boaters that there is someone in the area in the water.
Writer / Deirdre Gengenbach, Fishers, IN
The skier down marker is bright orange flag (at least 12x12 inches) on a short handle. When raised from a boat, it indicates that there is a skier (or boarder or tuber) down
It is not a requirement of the Indiana DNR to use one. Some states, and some Indiana lakes, may require use of one (at least in the past, Lake Sweetwater and Heritage Lake have required the use of this flag). Geist does not. So why do we use one? My husband and I were passengers on a boat at Lake Monroe that accidently ran over a downed skier. The skier survived but was severely injured. With a skier
down flag alert, that terrible accident may have been prevented. As a parent of children who like to tube, ski, and board, I am very sensitive to the dangers to boaters and skiers on our lake. I have personally witnessed (and I am sure you have too), boaters texting while driving, boaters pulling skiers without spotters, and boaters following very close in the wake of a boat pulling a skier. I am not suggesting that everyone on Geist should use one, but I do want everyone who sees one to know what it means. If you see a bright orange flag held up on a boat, be alert for a skier down in the area. If you are interested in using a skier down flag, you can purchase one almost anyplace that sells boating or skiing supplies. They run between $3 and $9.

ZONING BOARD YANKS BILLBOARD PERMIT Writer / Nathan Lamb
Opponents of the new 40-foot billboard at 79th and Fall Creek roads scored a victory May 8 when an appeals board revoked permitting for the structure. The Metropolitan Board of Zoning Appeals for Marion County voted four to zero to revoke the permit after hearing roughly 24 minutes of testimony from residents and officials. The appeal was filed by a grassroots group of area residents, who raised concerns about traffic safety, aesthetic impact and whether the sign complied with local zoning requirements.
Speaking before the board, area resident Randy Frisk said the large billboard doesn’t fit with the character of the area, adding that he thought it was dangerous to have an attention-grabbing sign so close to a busy intersection.
“My client has done everything we’re aware of that he needed to do to obtain the permit, and he did not tell any lies or mistruths or misstatements, if you will, in terms of obtaining this permit,” Quinn said.
A key argument against the billboard was “The question I ask is: How many cars with that it interferes with traffic light visibility a child seat in back need to be T-boned from for eastbound motorists on 82nd Street. the side by somebody distracted by the Attorney Mary Soliday cited local sign?” he asked. regulations that prohibit signs from obstructing traffic devices or that create Billboard owner Jeffrey Lee had secured a potential hazard for motorists. Days after the verdict by the Zoning Appeals Board, this “Don’t Drive Naked!” billboard was put up by owner Jeff Lee. He has threatened to appeal the decision with the City of Indianapolis.

REEDA TODD HAS NEW OWNERSHIP, NEW NAME
By Tom Britt
Reeda Todd Salon at the Geist Marina Village has a new breath of life, thanks to an ownership change. Erin and Chad Hunt of Carmel purchased the popular salon and spa with a vision to transform it into a new concept “nail bar,” called the Beauty Bar at Geist. “Women can come in and sit at the bar and get their nails done while drinking their favorite adult beverage,” said Erin. “And with our liquor license, we can do it legally,” Chad added with a smile. Erin and Chad saw this nail bar concept in Florida where the couple lived for seven years. When they returned to their old stomping grounds, the entrepreneurial itch led them to looking for an established hair salon with a good customer base and reputation for service. Chad and Erin Hunt recently purchased Reeda Todd Salon at the Geist Marina Village and are transforming it into the Beauty Bar at Geist.
“When we met the staff here for the first time back in April, they were so excited and anxious for a change,” Erin added. Remodeling has started with fresh paint and reception area upstairs. The new nail bar should be finished by the end of July. All the services previously provided by Reeda Todd will continue, including the Aveda hair salon, pedicures, makeup, facials, massages, manicures and body treatments.

“Women get their nails done more often than their hair. We are hoping that if people come in for a relaxing manicure and glass of wine, they will come back for their other spa services, too.”
Mitford Homes, Inc. is a custom homes building company that builds high quality stick built custom homes at prices below the competition and backs them up with great service.
So, ladies, if you are looking for a girls’ night out with all the amenities, stop by the new and improved Beauty Bar at Geist. Their new website is thebeautybargeist.com and they have started Facebook and Twitter feeds.
