Welcome to Lawrence, where residents, schools and businesses unite in its appreciation for the excellent location and strength of community. For the past twelve years it has been my pleasure serving the community as a member of the Lawrence Common Council and as a two term Mayor of this great city. Now with over 50,000 residents and growing, it easy to see why Lawrence is the place where people choose to live, work, and play.
The City of Lawrence offers a unique retreat within Marion County while maintaining strong connectivity to the urban core of Indianapolis and Central Indiana. A strong metropolitan school district, tightly knit business community, rich history, and a strong residential market bolster Lawrence’s unique Fall Creek Valley terrain and numerous arts, recreational and athletic amenities.
Population growth, educational enrollment and attainment, and gross assessed values are all important community progress indicators that have upward trends. Through
THE CITY OF LAWRENCE
continued powerful partnerships between governmental entities and units, dynamic organizations, area businesses, large and small, and our caring and committed residents, the City of Lawrence continues to be a distinctive place that fosters growth.
Lawrence has many tangible assets, including Historic Fort Benjamin Harrison. This area has seen a tremendous and ongoing rebirth as the center of the City of Lawrence with the convenience of easy access to multiple interstate systems. The newly renovated Civic Plaza serves as a focal point and is home to seasonal events. The Fort Ben Cultural Campus features the first permanent installation of musical swings and is home to Theater at the Fort and Heartland Films.
There are year-round community events such as the Fort Ben Farmers Market, Spring Fling egg hunt, 4TH Fest including spectacular fireworks, Community Safety Day with its annual wing eating competition between the Lawrence Police and Fire Departments, Lagers in Lawrence, the
City’s Oktoberfest celebration, as well as “A Lawrence Christmas” tree lighting and parade, the signature event of the city’s Winterfest celebration. A Black History Month Celebration, Fiesta Lawrence, Juneteenth, and Dia Latino de Lawrence celebrate the City’s diversity. These and so many more events offer something for everyone.
Lawrence is home to one of the highest ratios of green space to total land area in the State of Indiana. Encompassing over 1700 acres, Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park and the Fort Golf Course are favorites for residents and visitors alike. Lawrence Parks are home to premier youth sports facilities such as soccer, baseball, a skate park, and, pickleball courts.
Strong civic organizations, community engagement, an educated and capable workforce and local business leaders who are committed to improving and investing in the City of Lawrence make Lawrence an ideal community. Again, welcome to Lawrence, a place where everyone belongs.

Dear Readers,
Welcome to McCordsville, one of the fastest growing communities in the State of Indiana. Located in the northwest corner of Hancock County, McCordsville is adjacent to Fishers southeastern border, directly east of Lawrence, and has direct access to I-70 to the south. Fortville and McCordsville make up a majority of Vernon Township and share the
“A” rated Mount Vernon School Corporation. Go Marauders!
Our community is in the midst of major transformation. With our population increasing rapidly and expected to nearly double over the next decade, McCordsville broke ground on a brand new Town Center in 2022. McCord Square will provide a central meeting area with over 14 acres of new parkland, event space, new restaurants, apartments, Town homes, retail, office space, and municipal services. The first phase of this transformational project is set to open in Fall 2024.
Outdoor recreation is a major priority of the Town. Significant upgrades to Old School
Park are planned for 2023. In addition, over the next several years McCordsville will nearly quadruple our existing park land and trails, including the first extension of the Geist Greenway trail into Hancock County.
Even with the growth and change, McCordsville holds tight to their small-town charm. With local annual events, Daniel’s Vineyard providing entertainment yearround, and well-known small businesses such as Tim’s Bakery, Scarlett Lane Brewery, Trax BBQ, and Second Stories Antiques, there are plenty of reasons to come explore McCordsville. We hope to see you soon!
Sincerely,
Tim Gropp, Town Manager

WELCOME TO FISHERS
Greetings Fishers residents,
Fishers’ identity has changed drastically over the past 150 years. What started as a small farming community transformed into a sleepy suburb in the 1990s and grew into today’s vibrant city featuring worldclass destinations, unique dining and retail, and a state-designated cultural district. A place known as one of the best places to live in America, with award-winning schools, an outstanding parks system, and a commitment to innovation.
As we embrace Fishers’ next chapter, we remain anchored by a commitment to always put our community first. As the City team works to bring new attractions
and businesses to Fishers, we are driven by the desire to make Fishers a better place to live, work, and play. We are actively creating new job opportunities, introducing new entertainment and recreation options for residents and visitors, and ensuring a sustainable future for our growing community.
We are dedicated to providing opportunities for our residents to come together and share meaningful experiences, whether it’s at the beach at the Geist Waterfront Park, on a walk along the Nickel Plate Trail, or shopping at the Fishers Farmers Market. With a new Arts Center and Event Center planned to open next year, these opportunities for social connection and
community building only continue to grow.
I’m so excited that you’re here and know that you’re part of a thriving community where connection, innovation, and transparency are valued. Our doors are always open. I encourage you to come to our monthly City Council meetings, engage our staff at community events, and share your feedback on how we can better serve you.
Thanks for embarking on this journey with me into Fishers’ next chapter.
Yours in service, Scott

GEIST HALF MARATHON AND 5K MOVES TO NEW SEPTEMBER DATE
Writer / Renee Larr
Photography Provided
Runners, walkers and outdoor enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the Geist Half Marathon and 5K each year in April. This year the event team celebrates its 15th anniversary with a move to the fall. The race will take place on September 16 around the beautiful Geist Reservoir.
“Originally, a group of residents came together to create the race and the nonprofit that hosted the race,” says Jake Reardon McSoley, director of recreation and wellness for the City of Fishers. “The Geist Half Marathon organization board came to the city about six months ago with interest in the city taking over the planning.”
Reardon McSoley says the event perfectly aligns with the city’s health initiatives. The city is also partnering with Vision Event Management. During those early conversations, the planning team learned of community feedback. Previous participants’ feedback included moving the race to the fall. Reardon McSoley says the move came down to a few significant reasons - timing,
weather and roadwork.
“In the past, the date it was offered was about two weeks away from the largest half marathon in the state and the Midwest, the Mini Marathon,” Reardon McSoley says. “That makes it very difficult to compete with another race. There aren’t a ton of runners who participate in both races.”
The demographics for the Geist Half Marathon are similar to the demographics of the Fishers community. Many parents and families participate each year, but find the spring timing difficult due to other events. Reardon McSoley says with spring comes more outdoor events, and families needed help choosing which ones to prioritize.
Spring in Indiana is often filled with pleasantly warm, sunny days and the occasional colder, gray days. Reardon McSoley says the planning team looked into fall weather and found better average temperatures in September. Runners and walkers will experience the sights of vibrant fall foliage around Geist Reservoir. The race showcases some of the beautiful
neighborhoods in the Geist area.
“Another reason the move to the fall made sense was due to roadwork,” Reardon McSoley says. “Road projects always kick off in the spring, and that makes a race through the streets of Fishers a bit of a challenge. By the fall, that’s usually a different story.”
One significant change for the 5K is a new route adding a new, major attraction to the area - Geist Waterfront Park. Reardon McSoley says the city is excited to show off the new park to race participants. He says the course was already beautiful, but adding in the park will offer new and different views of the reservoir.
“We evaluated both courses to see if any improvements could be made,” Reardon McSoley says. “We decided to keep the half marathon course the same. I’ve participated in the past, but I’d forgotten how beautiful of a course it truly is. There are about eight different places where you get great views of Geist.”
Half marathon participants receive a longsleeved tech shirt, and a soft, short-sleeved
TownePost.com / 2023 DIRECTORY AND RELOCATION GUIDE / 17
shirt for 5K participants at no additional cost. In years past, the shirts were not included in the price to enter the race. The shirt designs will be released soon, and Reardon McSoley encourages people to be on the lookout. The planning team is also working on plans for a 3” medal for half marathon finishers, and a 2.5” medal for 5K finishers.
Reardon McSoley says the team is looking to upgrade the entertainment experience for participants. He says they want to add additional entertainment along the course to keep runners and walkers energized throughout the half marathon. Interested parties can apply through the race website. He says they’re also looking for around 500
volunteers for the water stations, start and finish areas, packet pickup, food area, kids play zone, course marshal, cleanup crew, gear check, goody bag stuffing, results, awards, and event tear down.
One tradition that will continue, but with a slight upgrade, is the VIP experience. It includes special VIP gear, a post-race massage tent, all-you-can-eat catered food and drinks, and upgraded restrooms, for a small, additional per-person fee.
“Every resident of Fishers can get involved in some way in this family-friendly event, whether that’s through participating in the race, volunteering or cheering on participants,” Reardon McSoley says. “It’s a great way to showcase our community here in the City of Fishers. We encourage
everyone, regardless of ability or age, to participate.”
Reardon McSoley says the planning team expects around 2,000 half marathon participants, and 1,200 5K participants. The race is a rain-or-shine event, but participant safety is paramount. Dangerous weather is monitored throughout the event. Registration is open until 5 p.m. on September 15, or until the event reaches maximum capacity. Race expo and packet pickup are on September 15 at Grace Fishers Church.

DREES HOMES CELEBRATES 95 YEARS OF BUILDING EXCELLENCE
DREES HOMES IS PROUD TO CELEBRATE 95 YEARS OF BUILDING DREAM HOMES FOR TENS OF THOUSANDS OF HOMEOWNERS ACROSS THE COUNTRY.
A FAMILY BUSINESS
The Drees Homes story began in 1928 when German immigrant Theodore Drees crossed the Atlantic with visions of a better life. Today, the first Drees home ever built, a brick cape cod in Wilder, Kentucky, still stands as a testament to Theodore’s dedication to craftsmanship. Theodore’s son, Ralph, joined the business in 1959 after serving in the Army. It was Ralph Drees’ philosophy of diversification and industry leadership that took the company into new markets. Today, Drees Homes builds in 10 different metros spanning the Southeast, Texas and the Midwest including Greater Indianapolis. Drees is the nation’s 19th largest privatelyowned home builder – the 36th largest overall.
32 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 2023 DIRECTORY AND RELOCATION GUIDE / TownePost.com
FOUR GENERATIONS OF EXCELLENCE
When it comes to home building, every Drees home is built with a focused approach that always begins and ends with quality, personalization and customer service. In fact, this commitment to excellence runs four generations deep. Siblings Scott Drees and Alexa Drees Walker grew up with a passion for home building. Scott’s current role includes overseeing sales in the Indianapolis area, and Alexa is Corporate Director of Design. Their unique knowledge of the industry has cultivated a rich understanding that home is more than a dwelling - it’s a personal expression of each and every customer, and their ultimate goal is to bring that vision to life. This commitment to excellence and customer focus has earned Drees Homes the Triple Crown of national home building awards, including “America’s Best Builder,” “National Builder of the Year,” and the “National Housing Quality Award.” Most recently, Drees Homes has been selected as a 2022 U.S. Best Managed Company, a program sponsored by Deloitte Private and The Wall Street Journal.
DREES HOMES COMMUNITIES IN GREATER INDIANAPOLIS
Drees Homes builds throughout Greater Indianapolis, from Avon on the city's far west side to Carmel just north of Indy to exclusive neighborhoods nestled around Geist Reservoir on the northeast. Shopping, dining and entertainment options are minutes away, and you can easily get to Indy's thriving downtown. Drees is very excited to announce the opening of their newest communities that are now selling: Albany Village in Carmel, Belle Crest in Westfield and Vintner’s Park in McCordsville. Trescott in Plainfield and Carramore in Westfield are both coming soon!
Each one of Drees Homes’ communities compliments the area’s natural surroundings and an ample selection of floor plans are available to suit every need, ranging from single-family ranch and two-story layouts to low-maintenance paired villas. All plans are designed with open spaces and today’s most desirable features, plus energy efficiency and smart home technology. In addition to build-to-order homes, Drees offers new homes that are near completion so you can find a luxury home without the wait.

POPCON.US
INDIANAPOLIS POPCON IS THE CONVERGENCE OF ALL THINGS POP CULTURE
Writer / KJ McGlinn
Photography Provided
It was more than 10 years ago when PopCon co-owner Carl Doninger and a few close friends had the idea to create not just another convention, but an experience unlike any other. This experience would immerse attendees in familiar pop culture while introducing them to new, exciting
experiences.
Doninger had a passion for tabletop gaming while some of his friends loved comic books and another with a passion for the show “My Little Pony.” A few just loved popular TV shows and creators on YouTube. What the group realized was every person in their life had a passion that fell under the pop culture category, but not everyone had a
place to gather and celebrate that passion.
Soon, Doninger was joined by co-owner Kris Keys. “I thought it was a cool opportunity to plan an event that was a little different than other conventions out there,” Keys says.
The first PopCon was held in Indianapolis in June of 2014. Nine different pop culture
36 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 2023 DIRECTORY AND RELOCATION GUIDE / TownePost.com
genres were represented from movies and TV, to comics and anime and to eSports and tabletop gaming. Now, 10 years later, PopCon is a tradition for friends and family alike in Indianapolis and an annual trip for many people from around the world. Each year, more than 30,000 people attend PopCon.
“Once you fall into our universe, you are welcomed and immediately feel like you are part of something bigger. Friends are made and cultivated. Annual reunions are organized,” Doninger says.
While the term ‘comic con’ is something you’ve most likely heard, PopCon is not a comic convention. You will certainly find comic books and people in cosplay--hat is part of the fun. But, you’ll also find a fully immersive world of pop culture.
“Most importantly, you’ll also find a family,” says Doninger. “I love seeing the previously
oblivious parents thrilled to see their kids in their element, and then realize that they love PopCon too.”
As an attendee of PopCon, not only does the event promise a welcoming atmosphere but also the opportunity to try escape rooms, virtual reality, laser tag, tabletop gaming and video gaming.
Celebrities that have already been announced this year include Patrick Warburton (“Rules of Engagement,” ”Seinfeld”), James Marsters (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Torchwood”) and Michelle Gomez (“Doctor Who,” “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”). Voice actors from popular anime shows like “My Hero Academia” and “Attack on Titan” will also be in attendance. The convention is a favorite among anime fans.
For parents who may not know anything about the anime that their children love, it is
a place for them to bond, learn and share the excitement.
“It’s special when that parent that drove more than 12 hours to bring their child to meet someone at PopCon, realizes there are 100 other parents that did the same thing,” Doninger says.
If you’ve often thought a comic con might not be your thing, the duo invites you to come to their event where they assure you that PopCon will become “your thing.” Walk through the vendor hall full of artists and creators. Sit down and try a board game or take the young kids to the Lego display that is bigger than a basketball court.
Simply put: If you’re passionate about it, you’ll find it at PopCon.
Tickets for the 10th annual PopCon Indy happening August 25th-August 27th are on sale at popcon.us.
