Becoming a police officer was nothing short of fate for Lawrence Police Chief Gary Woodruff. Growing up on the east side, Woodruff knew he wanted to be an officer of the law at around 9 years old. His father spent most of his career in law enforcement and Woodruff wanted to do the same. “I joined the U.S. Army Military Police
at the age of 18 in 1983,” Woodruff says. “That’s one of the best career moves I ever made because you go from being a boy to being a man. You learn skills in the military that carry you for a lifetime.” After basic training he was stationed in Europe for 18 months. He was then sent back to Fort Harrison in the Army Criminal Investigation Division. Once his three-year commitment to the military was complete, 6 / GEIST MAGAZINE / JUNE 2022 / TownePost.com
he started working for the Frankfort Police Department (FPD). “My dad was a 20-year retired member of the FPD,” Woodruff says. “He was a twoterm chief there and he retired in 1979. As I was getting out of the military in 1986, his influence was still felt there. The uniform I wore on my first day was the same exact uniform my dad wore on his last day there.”

Chief Gary Woodruff was instrumental in transitioning the fleet of LPD vehicles to newer models.
In 2000 Woodruff transferred to the Lawrence Police Department (LPD). He spent time in various roles including detective in the investigations division, investigations division commander, media relations chief and deputy chief of police. Woodruff was appointed chief of police in January. “It’s an honor to be asked to serve by our mayor,” Woodruff says. “We have an amazing leadership team here at LPD. Each one of them is staying to continue the forward movement we have maintained over the last six years. It’s a true honor.” Woodruff is responsible for a staff of around 112 people and an almost $9 million budget, along with vehicles, buildings and technology. Woodruff says the most important investment is his staff. He’s worked hard during his tenure with the department to build relationships not just within the public safety area, but also within the community of Lawrence. “At the end of the day it’s my responsibility to make sure our officers have the resources, tools and training they need to be successful,” Woodruff says. “Otherwise I want to let good people do what they do. Our officers do a fantastic job.”
The administration at the LPD had so much confidence in their staff, they voluntarily participated in the now-canceled show “Live PD.” Woodruff served as coordinator for the project. “Every Friday and Saturday night for 98 episodes, we invited America on a ride-along with LPD and the other eight participating agencies,” Woodruff says. “That’s how much confidence we have in our officers. We had a very positive experience with the show during its run.” Woodruff was instrumental in transitioning the fleet of LPD vehicles to newer models. He says the department was the first agency in Indiana to utilize body camera technology called BodyWorn by Utility. He says the department wanted to be proactive rather than reactive to precipitating events. “We felt the cameras were an important tool for us,” Woodruff says. “It affords us the ability to investigate something immediately. If there is something we need to own or do better, we apply it.” One of Woodruff ’s goals this year is to expand the number of officers. He says the department has been historically understaffed but would like to move from 60 to 65 sworn officers. He’s hoping to add 8 / GEIST MAGAZINE / JUNE 2022 / TownePost.com
three to four officers per year for the next four to five years. “We’re very interested in recruiting members that reflect the diversity that Lawrence enjoys,” Woodruff says. “We have a wonderfully diverse community here. We are encouraging everyone to apply. Obviously we have to do that with fiscal responsibility in mind and manage that growth appropriately.” Unfortunately, Woodruff ’s father didn’t get to see his son’s full-circle moment of following in his footsteps as police chief. He passed away in 2021, before Woodruff ’s appointment. “He was such an inspiration to me,” Woodruff says, adding that he hopes to end his career with the LPD. “His influence is still just as profound as if he were still here. When I was appointed deputy chief for the first time in 2010, his advice to me was never to forget where I came from, and I try to remember that each day. I grew up here. I graduated from Arlington High School. When people ask me where I grew up, I say right here - these same streets LPD is working now.” For more information or to apply, visit joinlawrencepd.com.

n the world of marketing, the humble agency of Mojo Up is making a point to ensure they stand out, starting with the people they hire on staff.
“We have seven black males who work at our company, which doesn’t exist in most companies in the greater Indianapolis area, even if they have 1,000 employees,” says Mojo Up Founder and CEO Travis Brown.
“What that means to the client is when we come to the table to think about marketing them, we think differently.” Located in Fishers, Mojo Up was started by Brown in 2019, and now has a staff of 11 full-time employees and four contract employees. A public speaker for over 20 years, Brown was inspired to start Mojo Up after coming to the realization that many businesses in the area lacked the knowledge to properly market themselves. “If you have an incredible plumbing business or if you are a real estate agent, you didn’t go to school to be a marketer,” Brown says. “But you quickly realize that if you can’t market, drive leads and convert, then you go out of business. So I was always thinking, ‘How can I help people do that?’ That was really my inspiration.” Initially, Mojo Up primarily worked with individuals on developing their personal brand. Over time, though, Brown quickly found himself working with larger and larger clients. “When I first started it was really about personal brand. I worked with a lot of executives, CEOs and small-business owners and helped them build their personal brand, which morphed into spending more time with company brands, especially with small businesses,” Brown says. “Fast-forward to today, and now we work with mid-sized companies and some enterprise clients. Our clientele is significantly different than when I first started all by myself. It’s exciting that we’ve had big companies and corporations raise their hand and be willing to put their trust in us.”

As the largest black-owned marketing agency in the state of Indiana, Mojo Up has specifically been able to help clients improve their workplace diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). “Over the last three years we’ve had a lot of companies that chose to work with us because we had a diverse mindset to help them with their business, based upon the people and the talent that we have,” Brown says. “The truth is that DEI is such an important fabric of companies, but most companies don’t know how to produce it.” While diversity is certainly at the heart of Mojo Up’s identity, the marketing agency also ensures its employees are skilled at what they do. For this reason, Mojo Up launched their “Diverse + Talented” campaign in 2022. “The reason why that was important to us is because we wanted to change the narrative that it’s not diverse or talented - it’s diverse and talented,” Brown says. “We’re not asking people to come to us only because we’re diverse. It’s because we have both, and that’s not something most of our competitors can offer.”
When it comes to the specific types of clients they’re looking to work with, Brown highlights four specific categories. These include companies who: · are looking for a diverse and talented agency · are looking for an agency to tell their DEI story · are looking for an agency who can help them recruit diverse talent · must use an MBE (Minority Business Enterprise) certified agency When it comes to the general process that Mojo Up takes its clients through, Brown explains there are usually several strategic steps, starting with a Brand Scorecard. “We audit you and then we turn it into a Brand Scorecard so you know where you stand today,” Brown says. Next, Mojo Up moves on to developing a strategy, or what they call a Brand Blueprint. “That’s really our signature thing we do, which helps people understand their brand value and brand story,” Brown says of the Brand Blueprint. From there, Mojo Up passes things over to their creative team, who visualizes and works with clients to bring the brand to life. This is followed by optimization (where Mojo Up builds out and optimizes digital, social and online presence) and activation (how to grow exponentially with Mojo Up’s brand management). In reflecting on what Mojo Up takes pride in, Brown emphasizes that the marketing agency invests wholeheartedly in each and every one of its clients’ projects.

As Mojo Up continues to serve clients’ marketing needs throughout the greater Indianapolis area, Brown also hopes his agency can serve as an example when it comes to DEI. “We want to be a black-owned marketing agency that competes at the highest level, for the purpose of paving the way for other minority agencies, creatives and businesses to do the same thing,” Brown says. “We want other agencies to really start challenging themselves in their hiring practices and their own level of diversity.”

SPARK!FISHERS RETURNS JUNE 21-25 FULL LINEUP OF EVENTS ANNOUNCED FOR WEEKLONG CELEBRATION The annual Spark!Fishers festival, ignited by First Internet Bank, returns to Fishers’ Nickel Plate Cultural District this summer. MEET ME AT THE MARKET FISHERS FARMERS MARKET RETURNS WITH NEW VENDORS & SECOND LOCATION AT SAXONY

Shopping local is the backbone of any good farmers market. The Fishers Farmers Market, presented by IU Health Saxony, has returned for the 2022 summer season, and runs from 8 a.m. to noon each Saturday through September 24 at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater (NPDA). Local vendors from central Indiana abound, showcasing produce, baked goods, meat and eggs, specialty food items, honey, coffee, plants, and even homemade dog food. Each week more than 65 vendors line the NPDA. This year 10 to 15 new vendors are selling their goods to Fishers residents.
“We’re always excited to welcome back our vendors from previous years, but we’re always happy to bring new vendors into the fold,” Sarah Sandquist, director of Parks and Recreation. “We’re so excited that the Nickel Plate Trail has officially opened to provide another way to access the market.” The event caters to the whole family, including children and pets. The Farm Hands kids program offers kids aged 2 to 12 the opportunity to engage in the local food system through educational games, crafts, demonstrations, and exposure to new fruits and vegetables. Once per month, kids can participate in the two-bite challenge. By taking two bites of the featured fruit or vegetable, kids will earn $2 in Market Bucks to spend on their choice foods at the market. 18 / JUNE 2022 / TownePost.com
This year the market leaders expanded the popular Biz Kids program. Each week young entrepreneurs are given space to sell their handmade or homegrown items. Biz Kidz Day is July 9 and features more than 40 young vendors. Man’s best friend can not only attend the event, but also even find some items created specifically for them. Collins Universal Foods sells homemade dog food and is making its first appearance at the market this year. “We have a Great Dane and he was experiencing a ton of allergy issues, so we decided to try and make his food at home,” says Monika Collins, owner of Collins
Universal Foods. “We noticed it really made a difference in his skin and coat, so we decided we wanted to share that with others. We know Fishers residents love their pets, so participating in the market was a natural fit for us.” For those who want to shop local but can’t commit to a Saturday morning, the Fishers Farmers Market at Saxony, presented by IU Health Saxony, formerly Saxony Market, offers shoppers a secondary location and time to buy. The market takes place every Wednesday from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., beginning June 1 and ending September 28. Sandquist says it’s an excellent opportunity for a midweek restock of fresh produce.

Debbie’s Daughters Bakery and Cafe is participating in the Fishers Farmers Market at Saxony for the first time this year. They offer small-batch baked goods from scratch, with a changing weekly menu. “We’re very excited to participate because this gives us another group of people to bring our products to each week,” says Jessica Walls, co-owner. “Each week we’ll offer baked goods that showcase local items grown in Hamilton County. When strawberries are in season, we’ll do a strawberry muffin or a strawberry cookie.” This year several specialty days are returning to the Fishers Farmers Market, including Biz Kidz Day on July 9, Nonprofit Day on July 23 and National Farmers Market Week Celebration on August 13. Additionally, each week a new, local yoga studio offers free, socially distant yoga at 8 a.m. on the Nickel Plate District AMP stage.

Local musicians take the stage each Saturday to entertain guests while they shop. It’s an excellent opportunity for shoppers to stick around after their shopping is done to enjoy free, local entertainment. The Fishers Farmers Market works closely with the Fishers Health Department to implement COVID-19 precautions. While the market is outdoors, social distancing and hand washing are strongly encouraged. Hand washing stations are available throughout the area, as well as restroom facilities.

At Fatty’s Cycle, it’s all about providing customers with quality, reliable service. “We really take a lot of pride in doing the right job the first time - that’s our big thing,” says co-owner Matt Turner. “We don’t leave a lot to chance.” Founded in 2010 by business partners Matt
Turner and Kevin Lueder, Fatty’s Cycle provides motorcycle, ATV and UTV sales and service for the central Indiana area. Located in Fortville, the shop proudly services American V-twin and metric motorcycles, dirt bikes, ATVs and side-bysides, while also serving as Indiana’s premier dealer of Beta and YCF motorcycles. yka Gurvitz is creating a legacy for her children to build on for years to come. Eve’s Garden Deli recently opened in Lawrence, and is a first-of-its-kind business. The takeout-only restaurant is the only black-owned deli registered in the state of Indiana.

Another original family creation, Lamar’s Sweet Chicken, comes with sweet chicken, fried egg, tomato jam, cream cheese and Eve’s sauce on a Hawaiian bun. Just don’t ask what’s in Eve’s Sauce. That’s a secret Gurvitz isn’t willing to share.

The namesake Eve is a nod to the Gurvitz family’s Christian faith. The Lawrence North High School graduate says her faith is essential in her personal life and business life. Her faith implores her to give back to her Lawrence community.
The Gurvitz family has a menu item named for each member, but they all work in the store together. They each have a role and enjoy operating their business together. Gurvitz originally started the business as a catering side gig, but quickly realized her dream of owning a brick-and-mortar location. She began testing her ideas on friends and family.

the worst food critics around us,” Gurvitz says. “The only real criticism we got was to toast our buns, which is optional on our menu.” Gurvitz’s mantra is “Customer satisfaction from the time you order until your last bite.” She hopes to provide that to each customer through takeout, delivery and catering. Long-term goals include opening more locations for each of her children to operate one day. Eve’s Garden Deli is located at 6310 Oaklandon Road in Lawrence.
